- 1:12Speaker 1: It's a comedian, actor, director, television producer, filmmaker. He rose

- 1:20Speaker 1: satire depicting the trials and tribulations of black actors in Hollywood.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He is a new documentary film out making, The Five Heartbeats,
- 1:29Speaker 1: about his journey to making the blockbuster iconic film The
- 1:32Speaker 1: Five Heartbeats. The movie premieres exclusively tonight Tonight, everybody. That's
- 1:37Speaker 1: why he's on the show today. They get the word
- 1:38Speaker 1: out one night only in five hundred theaters nationwide. Please
- 1:42Speaker 1: work with the money making conversations. The incredible Robert Townsend,
- 1:47Speaker 1: thank you so much for having me, baby boy, on
- 1:52Speaker 1: your business. Let's just go. You just gotta know how
- 1:55Speaker 1: much I love him, when you know, when you you
- 1:58Speaker 1: know how important he is to my career. This is
- 2:00Speaker 1: the first time and every time I see him, always
- 2:02Speaker 1: hug and say, man, you know you're the reason I'm
- 2:05Speaker 1: where I'm at. The he stopping and I don't laugh
- 2:09Speaker 1: is off, not because he knows. Because what happened was
- 2:11Speaker 1: in the eighteen when I was finished doing Steve Show
- 2:14Speaker 1: Me and the Boards and ABC, I was I didn't
- 2:17Speaker 1: have no agency. I just I was just out there,
- 2:19Speaker 1: just basically wild it out in the l a, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: as a comedian, and he hired me on his very
- 2:24Speaker 1: popular w B show The Parenthood as a writer. If
- 2:27Speaker 1: he does not hire me as a writer, I have
- 2:29Speaker 1: no foothold in the writing business. Because he knows how
- 2:31Speaker 1: difficulty is for African American writers to even especially back then,
- 2:36Speaker 1: an opportunity to the right. And I always look at
- 2:38Speaker 1: him and I thank him. I said, man, thank you, brother,
- 2:41Speaker 1: because I wouldn't be interviewing him right now because that's
- 2:44Speaker 1: his that's his m O. Though. He gives people an opportunity,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and that's why he's had such longevity and such positivity
- 2:51Speaker 1: in this business. And that's why I'm happy to have
- 2:53Speaker 1: you on my show man to help you out, help
- 2:57Speaker 1: so much. I just want to get this word out
- 2:59Speaker 1: about the documentary. But but, but here's the thing. You know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: because you know, you are the architect of designing and
- 3:06Speaker 1: creating and building on stuff from a business perspective on
- 3:10Speaker 1: the way down. So my whole thing is, uh, this
- 3:13Speaker 1: is my new documentary. It's about the Five Heartbeats. People
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know, over the years love the Five Heartbeats. Over
- 3:20Speaker 1: two hundred million clips have been shared worldwide from this film,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and so people ask me all the time about doing
- 3:26Speaker 1: a sequel or something like that. I could never figure
- 3:29Speaker 1: it out. But sometimes the stories behind the scenes are
- 3:34Speaker 1: more you know, exciting sometimes in the movie. And this
- 3:36Speaker 1: documentary is a roller coaster rived about how I made
- 3:40Speaker 1: The Five Heartbeats. I saw close to ten thousand actors
- 3:43Speaker 1: and open calls to to decide on the four guys
- 3:47Speaker 1: that would be in the film. It is my journey
- 3:50Speaker 1: with the Temptations because a lot of people don't know that,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you know, initially they think it's the Dells. They think
- 3:56Speaker 1: it's the Temptations. In the documentary, I set the record straight.
- 4:00Speaker 1: It's a roller coaster ride. And it's like having a
- 4:02Speaker 1: front row seat on the set watching this movie be made.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And so I'm really proud of it. And it's one
- 4:08Speaker 1: night only Fathom Events. If they want to get tickets,
- 4:11Speaker 1: they can google Robert Towns and dot com making the
- 4:13Speaker 1: Five Heart Beats. But I'm just excited to talk to you,
- 4:15Speaker 1: so thank thank you again for having me. Okay, we're
- 4:17Speaker 1: gonna talk about a lot though this is you can
- 4:19Speaker 1: slow you can slow down the energy because you're getting
- 4:21Speaker 1: off the air. I got you for a man. I
- 4:23Speaker 1: got the man, Robert Townson, So I know you've been
- 4:25Speaker 1: doing a lot of quick star. I can hear that
- 4:26Speaker 1: little quick tone thank you. No, no, you're not going
- 4:32Speaker 1: anywhere with my friends because we got to talk about
- 4:35Speaker 1: this and got more detail. But also that career man,
- 4:37Speaker 1: that that it's really influenced so many people today. But
- 4:40Speaker 1: I want to let you know about what Sean McDonald's
- 4:42Speaker 1: doing right now. For Robert Hownson. You know, I got
- 4:44Speaker 1: the link and I got the social media posts on
- 4:48Speaker 1: all my money making conversation platforms, which Facebook, which is Twitter,
- 4:53Speaker 1: which is Instagram. It's going up on all my that's
- 4:56Speaker 1: only guy that's already updated today. Also it will be
- 5:00Speaker 1: updated on my ra Sean McDonald fan Club, which is
- 5:03Speaker 1: on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. You know. And so with
- 5:07Speaker 1: that being said, that's I got almost a million followers.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So believe me, my friend, I'm doing my part. And
- 5:13Speaker 1: guess what I'm putting boost I'm buying some boost on
- 5:16Speaker 1: these posts so we can just get it out even further,
- 5:18Speaker 1: because you don't. Sometimes they just sit there put that
- 5:20Speaker 1: boost on that. Brother. You know, I love it. I
- 5:24Speaker 1: love it. I love it because what we're supposed to do, Robert,
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's what we're supposed to do. Man, we suppose your friend,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, and and and that's what social media is
- 5:31Speaker 1: a big game changer when you're out there trying to
- 5:34Speaker 1: get our brands out there, and the only way it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: gonna happen. So when they called me and say hey,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Robert Towns and uh want to know, you know, people
- 5:41Speaker 1: trying to get different media out let, Let's say, come on, really,
- 5:45Speaker 1: Robert Townsend. Okay, we're booting somebody off the Monday Show.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We're booting somebody off the Money Show. Thank you, brother,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I love you. And so and so let's talk about this, Robert.
- 5:57Speaker 1: You know about the Five Party because my program to
- 6:00Speaker 1: went that's my favorite movie and my favorite movie, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: so why is it? And then both of them project
- 6:07Speaker 1: managers favor that's my favorite movie too. Uh you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I think people love The Five Heart Beats because there's
- 6:13Speaker 1: some some themes in that film that I think resonate
- 6:16Speaker 1: with a lot of people. You know, it's the rags
- 6:18Speaker 1: the richest story. It's friendship, it's forgiveness, and at the
- 6:23Speaker 1: end of the day, it's family. The five guys are
- 6:25Speaker 1: at that you know, barbecue together and they're still friends
- 6:28Speaker 1: and they're still with their women after all those years.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And so I think it really gives people hope. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: you know, and Eddie King Jr. His story, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: to go from you know, being a drug addict and
- 6:40Speaker 1: kicked out of the group to finding God and getting
- 6:43Speaker 1: his salvation. I think all of those things resonate with
- 6:45Speaker 1: the audience. I know, he got kicked out because you know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: he was looking good and had all the women, he
- 6:50Speaker 1: had the voice, all the women. That's my favorite character
- 6:54Speaker 1: because it wasn't it wasn't too far away from the
- 6:56Speaker 1: real dude. Well, you know, here, here's the thing. In
- 6:59Speaker 1: the in the documentary, I talked about meeting uh David
- 7:02Speaker 1: Ruffin and and talk about you know how David Ruffin
- 7:06Speaker 1: really influenced me. And I met with him and when
- 7:09Speaker 1: I met with him, he was strong out And I
- 7:10Speaker 1: told Keenan. I said, Keena, because Keenan co wrote the
- 7:12Speaker 1: script with me. I said to Keenan, I said, man,
- 7:15Speaker 1: we gotta help this brother. Let's still make them technical advisor,
- 7:18Speaker 1: but we're gonna get him in rehab and we're gonna,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna pay for it. And then you
- 7:22Speaker 1: know it didn't happen because he passed away, but it
- 7:25Speaker 1: was just you know. So so the documentary is really
- 7:28Speaker 1: the journey, you know, because it's my love of Motown
- 7:31Speaker 1: and Detroit and I'm from Chicago, but it's all that
- 7:34Speaker 1: great music and so you know, it's really I think
- 7:37Speaker 1: it's a beautiful journey of an artist, you know, And
- 7:39Speaker 1: I don't think there's ever been a documentary about a
- 7:41Speaker 1: film a black filmmaker who tells his story and tells
- 7:44Speaker 1: and tells it honest and tells him with this level
- 7:46Speaker 1: of passion. So you got this idea and you in
- 7:49Speaker 1: five hundred theaters. How do you get your idea to
- 7:52Speaker 1: five hundred theaters and then only one particular night that
- 7:55Speaker 1: which means it's event. This is an event tonight, everybody,
- 7:58Speaker 1: This is an event. Your just something special? Is something unique?
- 8:02Speaker 1: How did that come about? Well? You know the thing
- 8:05Speaker 1: for me, you know, I know your show is about
- 8:07Speaker 1: business and being an entrepreneur, and I understood that there
- 8:11Speaker 1: is an audience out there that loves the five Heart Beats.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So I went to Fathom Events and I pitched my
- 8:16Speaker 1: vision because they haven't done a whole lot of events,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you know, surrounding content for African Americans, so this was
- 8:23Speaker 1: the first time. And I just kind of looked at
- 8:25Speaker 1: a lane and said, hey, I think there's a big
- 8:28Speaker 1: audience for this, and you know, I want to see
- 8:31Speaker 1: and test the frequency. I think we can make some
- 8:34Speaker 1: money on it. And um, they I did the numbers
- 8:37Speaker 1: and broke down my power point how many markets, how
- 8:39Speaker 1: many times it plays on television? The Twitter followers, the
- 8:44Speaker 1: Instagram followers and people they heard the pitch and they said, wow,
- 8:48Speaker 1: we've never done anything like this, and then they saw
- 8:51Speaker 1: the documentary. And then once I posted one time, I
- 8:55Speaker 1: think we got close to a half a million people
- 8:57Speaker 1: that were engaged with one post. So then it's just
- 9:00Speaker 1: been growing and growing and growing and just getting the
- 9:03Speaker 1: word out. So I think as an entrepreneur, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you gotta find a lane. You gotta look at the lane,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and then you know, you take a piece of content
- 9:11Speaker 1: like the five Heartbeats and say there is still an
- 9:14Speaker 1: audience for this film, and and it all just kind
- 9:17Speaker 1: of lined up. They saw the vision and Uh, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: think the documentary is really good and I'm excited for
- 9:22Speaker 1: people to see it tonight. Will you make it? Will
- 9:25Speaker 1: you be making any physical appearances at any of the screenings?
- 9:28Speaker 1: You know what in in? Uh, here's where everybody is.
- 9:32Speaker 1: If you're in Philadelphia, Uh, John Canada Terrell who played Flash,
- 9:37Speaker 1: is gonna be in Philadelphia. If you're in New York City, Uh,
- 9:41Speaker 1: Leon and Harry Lennox are gonna be in New York City.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And if you're in l A, you know at I'm
- 9:47Speaker 1: gonna be in Century City with Michael Wright. Uh, Michael
- 9:52Speaker 1: right Tico, Uh, Deborah Lacy and then at the Century City.
- 9:58Speaker 1: But if you're in the hood hood, then that's on Cranshaw,
- 10:02Speaker 1: that's Fallen Hills. Hard Thorne James is gonna be there,
- 10:06Speaker 1: he said, I'm standing in the hood. Yea. So because
- 10:08Speaker 1: he might daggle some people out the window playing Big Red,
- 10:11Speaker 1: he's down in the hood and so we're all representing.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Everybody's trying to share the love today on the phone,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Robert Townson, incredible Robert Townson. When he comes back, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: want to talk about their first appearance on HBO when
- 10:20Speaker 1: I first discovered him, and he blew me away media man,
- 10:24Speaker 1: which I feel should be a sitcom more with Robert Townson.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I just for showing McDonald you're listening to money making conversation.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I feel so especially he's on the phone to promote
- 10:38Speaker 1: tonight only Tonight only screen needs in five Theater's nationwide
- 10:43Speaker 1: the making The Five Heartbeats. His journey to making the
- 10:46Speaker 1: blockbuster iconic film The Five Hot Beats. Uh. He started
- 10:50Speaker 1: as an extra and um, he's an idea guy. I'm
- 10:55Speaker 1: telling Robert, Robert Townson, I'm speaking to Robert. I'm gonna
- 10:58Speaker 1: tell you something. You amazed to me. Man, um Uh,
- 11:02Speaker 1: when I look at my life, you've played so many
- 11:04Speaker 1: important roles before I knew you. Because here's something really interesting.
- 11:08Speaker 1: When the Hollywood Shuffle came out, I was doing radio
- 11:10Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas, and he had assistant who I still
- 11:14Speaker 1: love to day, Charlie Jordan's. She was on my show
- 11:17Speaker 1: and I contacted Charlie Jordan. I said, this movie. I
- 11:19Speaker 1: love this movie. What can I do to help promote
- 11:22Speaker 1: this movie? Because you just struck a nerve, you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you struck a nerve back then, you're struck a nerve today?
- 11:28Speaker 1: How you because you you know how to connect emotionally
- 11:32Speaker 1: with your fan base. That's a gift. Talk to me
- 11:35Speaker 1: about that. You know, I love what I do and
- 11:41Speaker 1: I love my craft, and so when people look at
- 11:43Speaker 1: something that I've created, I've gone through at least rewrites
- 11:48Speaker 1: on any if you if you look at the Five
- 11:51Speaker 1: Heart Beats or meteor Man, or working on stuff like
- 11:55Speaker 1: Baps with halle Berry or Holiday Hardwood being Rains and
- 11:58Speaker 1: Alfrey Woodard, I really take time to really develop the
- 12:02Speaker 1: material and make sure it's right. And I won't stop
- 12:06Speaker 1: until I find I get perfection. So you know, I
- 12:10Speaker 1: I believe in. I believe to me in life and
- 12:12Speaker 1: business and anything in life, You've got to go to
- 12:14Speaker 1: the extra mile. So I think when people see anything
- 12:17Speaker 1: I create, they know I've gone the extra mile. It's years.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Media man, Yes, sir, I saw this movie. Been a fan,
- 12:27Speaker 1: been a super fan this movie. I'm why isn't this
- 12:30Speaker 1: show Disney? Why isn't this show now? Why isn't this
- 12:34Speaker 1: show on Amazon Prime? On Netflix? Please help me with
- 12:39Speaker 1: this show. I love this show, media man. Well, you
- 12:42Speaker 1: see you speak in life, right, now, So it's probably
- 12:45Speaker 1: gonna happen, you know, because you don't. Here's the thing,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I never have repeated myself. Everything I've ever created was
- 12:51Speaker 1: unique and different. This is the first time, with this
- 12:53Speaker 1: documentary on the Five Heartbeats, that I'm revisiting any kind
- 12:56Speaker 1: of body of work that I've created. So I think that, um,
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, I may do a reboot of of Media Man.
- 13:05Speaker 1: There's so many ideas in my brain that I'm trying
- 13:07Speaker 1: to get out, you know that I'm getting now, not trying,
- 13:09Speaker 1: but getting now. And I think that right now that
- 13:12Speaker 1: that's kind of where my head is at, just creating
- 13:13Speaker 1: new art. Well, I'm Jesus um just the first black
- 13:17Speaker 1: superhero family with the Media Man. If you haven't say,
- 13:21Speaker 1: if you have not seen this movie, please watch this movie.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It's very entertaining, still very super relevant today. It was
- 13:27Speaker 1: a black Panther before Black Panther. Let's gonna be real,
- 13:29Speaker 1: It's gonna be real. And and there's a lot of
- 13:32Speaker 1: famous people in this a lot of famous vossovers in there,
- 13:35Speaker 1: Chris Tucker name one. It was voicing a lot of things.
- 13:38Speaker 1: And that it's very open that I've seen the movie
- 13:41Speaker 1: in years and I still remember how impactful that movie
- 13:43Speaker 1: is because three movies this young man has done, I say,
- 13:46Speaker 1: young Robert Townson Hollywood Shuffle made an impact over Richard's life.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I wanted. He made me want to be a promoter
- 13:54Speaker 1: because I was trying to find him so I can
- 13:55Speaker 1: promote his product. Okay, then he comes back with Media Man.
- 13:59Speaker 1: When I was writing on the show, that's when he
- 14:00Speaker 1: came out, you know what I'm saying, And so I
- 14:02Speaker 1: was like, wow, this is so you know, this is
- 14:06Speaker 1: a good storytelling because it was so relatable about an
- 14:09Speaker 1: actual family. There were superheroes that but but they had
- 14:13Speaker 1: these skills, but they still have to deal with the
- 14:15Speaker 1: family issues. We're just kind of like black Lightning in
- 14:17Speaker 1: the Yesterday. I'm just letting you know he's he's done it,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and everybody's kind of like replicating what he's done. His show.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Now it's really black lightning. Okay, Media Man, when that
- 14:27Speaker 1: you talked about up up in a way or dissity
- 14:29Speaker 1: up up in a way. I had the superhero family.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Medior Man was me with my powers by myself. That's right,
- 14:36Speaker 1: that's right, that's right, that's up up. I apologize. I apologize.
- 14:40Speaker 1: No good all good, but but you know what, they
- 14:43Speaker 1: got me getting ready to go on television. I might
- 14:45Speaker 1: have to walk out of here. I just gotta give
- 14:48Speaker 1: you heads up because I'm doing kt L A okay, okay, okay, cool.
- 14:51Speaker 1: When you don't worry, just talk to me about you
- 14:53Speaker 1: like the director. The second episode of Love is and
- 14:57Speaker 1: uh it's for Oprah's Network and we just got picked
- 14:59Speaker 1: up for another season. It's created by the the amazing
- 15:03Speaker 1: Mara brock a Kill and uh, I just had It'll
- 15:07Speaker 1: make you fall in love If you haven't seen the show,
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's it's about her her relationship with her husband, and
- 15:12Speaker 1: it's it's freaking amazing. And then, uh, as a matter
- 15:15Speaker 1: of fact, I'm reoccurring doing a reoccurring character on Black
- 15:18Speaker 1: Lightning and I'm directing one of the episodes. So your
- 15:22Speaker 1: instincts are right again, Rashaant. So it's it's like lovely lovely.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So you're you're recently given an Icon Awards Association in America.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Icon Talk talked to us about that before you get
- 15:32Speaker 1: out of here. Well, you know the thing is that, uh,
- 15:36Speaker 1: this organization, you know, was honoring different people they honored,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you know, I just felt really honored because you know,
- 15:43Speaker 1: the highest because Harry Belafonte was honored at the same
- 15:46Speaker 1: time with me, So it was just, you know, my
- 15:50Speaker 1: body of work. I shared the evening with them, but
- 15:53Speaker 1: I just felt like I still got a lot of
- 15:55Speaker 1: work to do. Like when you say young man, I
- 15:56Speaker 1: still feel it feel really young. Like Black Black Enterprise
- 16:00Speaker 1: gave me an award, and I kind of a ward
- 16:02Speaker 1: the other you know, like a few months back with
- 16:04Speaker 1: John Lewis, and I was like, I can't be in
- 16:07Speaker 1: the room with John Lewis. This man is still fighting
- 16:09Speaker 1: the good fight. So I gotta step up on my
- 16:11Speaker 1: game and do a lot of work. But but I
- 16:14Speaker 1: just want to say thank you for taking all this time.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I don't mean to rush. They got running me into
- 16:17Speaker 1: the studio now, but I just want to say today
- 16:21Speaker 1: I just wanna let the fans know. If you're a
- 16:23Speaker 1: fan of The Five Hard Beats, go to the theaters
- 16:26Speaker 1: today one night only. It is making The Five Hard
