- 0:22From Troy Public Radio, this is the News Wrap, and I'm Carolyn Hutcheson.
- 0:27Gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville has had his Alabama residency questioned,
- 0:34and Todd Stacy, host of Alabama Public Television's Capitol Journal,
- 0:38discusses the latest court ruling on the issue.
- 0:42And the wild card is about a cat literally stealing the show.
- 0:49Todd Stacey, welcome back to the News Wrap from Capitol Journal on Alabama Public Television.
- 0:55Good to be with you, as always.
- 0:57What are the big topics this week?
- 0:59I guess you can start with the breaking news that a Montgomery judge has dismissed
- 1:05the latest case challenging Tommy Tuberville's residency.
- 1:09You know, there have been several attempts to challenge Tuberville's residency.
- 1:13The Constitution says you have to be a resident of Alabama seven years prior to becoming governor,
- 1:20and he's obviously been a U.S. senator from Alabama for the last six years,
- 1:24but he has a beach home in Florida, and there's been a bunch of folks arguing
- 1:29that he spent so much time down there that he doesn't qualify as a resident here.
- 1:33But the court ruled that they don't even have the jurisdiction to get into that.
- 1:37Under Alabama law, you can challenge that, but actually after somebody's elected.
- 1:42You know, we've done some reporting on that, where Tuberville obviously does spend a lot of time
- 1:47at his Florida beach home, but technically, I mean, he's got a homestead tax exemption
- 1:53at his home in Auburn, and that is plenty to count as residency.
- 1:57They can appeal this if they want.
- 1:59You may see other challenges, but it was a big win for Tuberville, and his team is taking it as such.
- 2:04Speaking in their football metaphors, they say they're now 5-0 in defeating residency challenges,
- 2:10so that's a big win for Tuberville.
- 2:12Well, Todd, do you have a wild card for us?
- 2:15We love our pets. We love our dogs and cats.
- 2:18This is a cat wild card from ABC News.
- 2:21It's called Romeo and Juliet.
- 2:25On this production of Romeo and Juliet, this cat got on stage during the death scene.
- 2:30You know, Juliet takes the poison and wakes up to find Romeo has killed himself,
- 2:34and so this cat is just on Romeo, just chewing his hair and playing with him,
- 2:39but the show must go on.
- 2:42Juliet does a really good job of stating a character.
- 2:45Poor Romeo is getting eaten up by this cat.
- 2:47It's quite a performance.
- 2:49An unforgettable performance of Romeo and Juliet in Turkey.
- 2:54Great wild card, Todd.
- 2:56So who's on Capitol Journal tonight at 730, Sunday at noon on APT?
- 3:01I'm going to be talking with State Senator Chris Elliott.
- 3:04He's from Baldwin County, and they've got big news down there
- 3:07with the Mobile River Bridge project getting the green light.
- 3:11Also going to be talking with Dr. Tania Stewart,
- 3:14famous for her roles in The Heat of the Night, Time to Kill,
- 3:18and she's got a new movie coming out called Where is Your Faith?
- 3:22And, Todd, where will that movie be shown in Montgomery?
- 3:26That's right. There's a screening premiere of the movie.
- 3:29It's Where is Your Faith, August 2nd at the Capri there in Cloverdale,
- 3:34so you want to check that out.
- 3:36So we're going to preview that new movie,
- 3:38but she's also using her career and experience
- 3:41to try to promote the film industry in Alabama.
- 3:43She says we have so much to offer to producers and directors
- 3:47in terms of our history and beauty in this state.
- 3:50We need to be using it.
- 3:52So she's going to talk about how we can do better
- 3:54in terms of growing the film industry in Alabama
- 3:56for artistic's sake and for economic development.
