- 0:08sitting in and you might walk away completely fine.
- 0:10Not because of luck, not because of magic, but because of
- 0:13science. Today we are going to find out
- 0:16exactly why a metal car might be the one thing standing between
- 0:19you and 5 billion volts of sky electricity, and why the thing
- 0:23most people think protects them, the tyres, does absolutely
- 0:26nothing. Stay with me, this one is going
- 0:28to blow your mind. Curious kid cast?

- 1:03talking about something that is genuinely terrifying, genuinely
- 1:07fascinating, and genuinely something that actually happened
- 1:10to one of our listeners on the way to school.
- 1:12Picture this. You are sitting in the back of a
- 1:14car. Rain is hammering the windows.
- 1:16The sky goes white. A crack of Thunder shakes the
- 1:19whole vehicle. And you think, wait, what if
- 1:21lightning actually hits this car right now?
- 1:23What would happen? Well, a kid called River from
- 1:25Bellevue, NE thought exactly that.
- 1:27And instead of just being scared, River turned it into a
- 1:29question. And River, that is exactly the
- 1:31kind of brain we love on this show.
- 1:34So today, we're going to find out what actually happens when
- 1:36lightning strikes a car, whether you are safe, whether your tires
- 1:39do anything useful, and why science is occasionally the most
- 1:42surprising thing in the universe.
- 1:44Buckle up. Literally, right?
- 1:47First things first, lightning. What even is it?
- 1:52Lightning is basically the sky having a tantrum.
- 1:55When storm clouds build up, they create huge imbalances of
- 1:58electrical charge. Positive charges at the top,
- 2:00negative charges at the bottom, and eventually the difference
- 2:03becomes so enormous that the electricity cannot hold itself
- 2:06in anymore and it fires off a bolt to try to balance things
- 2:09out. That bolt can travel at speeds
- 2:11of up to 320 kilometres per hour, reach temperatures five
- 2:14times hotter than the surface of the sun, and release more energy
- 2:17in a split second than you could get from running a light bulb
- 2:20for about 3 months. So yes, lightning is kind of a
- 2:23big deal. Now here is where it gets
- 2:26interesting. Most people assume that if
- 2:28lightning hits a car, the people inside a toast completely done
- 2:31for finished. You would think that a giant
- 2:33metal box sitting on a road in a storm would be the worst
- 2:36possible place to be. Metal conducts electricity,
- 2:39right? So surely you are just sitting
- 2:41in a giant conductor waiting to be zapped.
- 2:43But here is the twist. And it is a genuinely brilliant
- 2:46twist. The metal body of the car is
- 2:48actually what protects you. This is all down to something
- 2:51scientists call a Faraday cage. Named after a brilliant man
- 2:55called. Michael Faraday, who lived in
- 2:57the 1800s and who as a child was so poor he had almost no
- 3:00schooling at all, which makes his discoveries even more
- 3:03impressive. A Faraday cage is basically a
- 3:06shell made of conductive metal that distributes electrical
- 3:09charge around its outside surface.
- 3:12Because the electricity is moving around the outside, it
- 3:14does not go through the inside. So if you are sitting inside a
- 3:17proper enclosed metal car, when lightning strikes, the current
- 3:20travels over the roof, down the sides, and exits to the ground
- 3:23mostly without passing through you at all.
- 3:25You are essentially sitting inside a metal bubble that
- 3:27quietly redirects one of the most powerful forces in nature
- 3:30around you, which is honestly one of the coolest things
- 3:33physics has ever done for anybody.
- 3:35This is all down to something scientists call a Faraday cage.
- 3:39Named after a brilliant man. Called Michael Faraday, who
- 3:41lived in the 1800s and who as a child was so poor he had almost

- 3:48impressive. A Faraday cage is basically a
- 3:51shell made of conductive metal that distributes electrical
- 3:54charge around its outside surface.
- 3:56Because the electricity is moving around the outside, it
- 3:59does not go through the inside. There is also a very popular
- 4:03myth that needs sorting out right now.
- 4:05A lot of people think rubber tires are what protect you in a
- 4:09car during a storm. The idea being that rubber does
- 4:12not conduct electricity. So the lightning gets into the
- 4:15car and then just get stuck there because the tires will not
- 4:18let it escape. This is completely wrong.
- 4:21Lightning carries so much energy that a thin layer rubber is
- 4:24absolutely no obstacle. Lightning can jump through air,
- 4:27which is not even a conductor, across gaps of hundreds of
- 4:30meters. It is not going to be stopped by
- 4:32your Michelin tires. The tires do not protect you,
- 4:35the metal shell does. Next time someone tells you it
- 4:38is the rubber, you can very politely inform them that
- 4:41science disagrees. So what actually happens to the
- 4:44car itself when lightning hits? Well, this is where things get a
- 4:48bit dramatic. First, there's the flash and the
- 4:50bang. The shockwave from the expanding
- 4:53air around the bolt is what creates Thunder, and up close
- 4:56it's absolutely deafening. Imagine someone popping the
- 4:59world's biggest bubble wrap right next to your ear.
- 5:01Except the bubble wraps on fire and moving at the speed of
- 5:04light. There may be scorch marks on the
- 5:06roof, damage to the aerial, melted bits on the bodywork and
- 5:09in some cases the window. Those can crack from the rapid
- 5:12pressure change. The electronics inside modern
- 5:14cars are particularly vulnerable.
- 5:16Your SAT NAV, your sensors, your infotainment screen, the
- 5:19computers that control the engine, all of them are designed
- 5:22to handle normal electrical loads, not a sudden blast of
- 5:25energy from the sky. So while the passengers may be
- 5:28fine, the car might need a very significant and very expensive
- 5:32trip to the garage afterwards. And here is something nobody
- 5:36really thinks about. The moment the lightning hits,
- 5:39if you are inside the car, you should avoid touching anything
- 5:42metal. That means the door handles, the
- 5:45gear stick, the steering wheel if you can help it, the charging
- 5:48cable. If your phone is plugged in.
- 5:50During those few milliseconds when the current is travelling
- 5:53through the vehicle, any direct contact with metal inside the
- 5:56car increases the small chance that some of that current could
- 5:58pass through you. Normally it is not a risk, but
- 6:02why add to it? Keep your hands in your lap,
- 6:04keep the windows closed and wait for the storm to pass.
- 6:08That is the advice. Now here is something that might
- 6:12make you feel better about the whole thing.
- 6:14Humans inside proper enclosed cars being seriously injured by
- 6:17direct lightning strikes is actually quite rare.
- 6:21The Faraday cage effect is genuinely powerful.
- 6:23Cars are struck by lightning more often than you might think
- 6:26because they are large metal objects sitting out in open
- 6:29spaces during storms, and in the vast majority of cases the
- 6:32people inside are OK. The car takes the damage so the
- 6:35people do not have to, which is a very noble thing for a car to
- 6:39do, and probably something manufacturers did not originally
- 6:41planned for, but science worked it out anyway.
- 6:45What should you do if a storm comes while you're in a car?
- 6:48If you're already inside a proper enclosed metal vehicle,
- 6:50staying there's actually a good option.
- 6:52Keep the windows closed, pull over safely If the rain's so
- 6:55heavy you can't see the road. Don't stop under a tree, because
- 6:59trees are struck by lightning all the time and falling
- 7:01branches are a very real problem.
- 7:04Don't stand outside leaning against the car doing a dramatic
- 7:07pose. Don't try to shelter in a
- 7:09convertible and assume the roof fabrics protecting you because
- 7:12it isn't. Basically the rule is enclosed
- 7:15metal good. Everything else, think twice,
- 7:17and maybe also think once before that, just to be safe.

- 8:45during a lightning storm? Is it a a hardtop metal family
- 8:49car, BA large metal lorry or CA convertible with a roof down?
- 9:00The answer is CA Convertible with the roof down gives you
- 9:03almost no protection at all because there is no enclosed
- 9:07metal shell around you. The Faraday cage effect only
- 9:10works if the metal is actually surrounding you on all sides.
- 9:14Question 3. After a car is struck by
- 9:16lightning, what should you do? Is it A immediately drive home
- 9:22as fast as possible to show everyone the scorch marks?
- 9:26B get the car checked by a mechanic because hidden damage
- 9:29to electronics and safety systems is possible, or C pat
- 9:34the car on the bonnet and thank it for its service?
- 9:41The answer is B though honestly, C is also a lovely gesture.
- 9:46Hidden damage to braking systems, airbags, and
- 9:49electronics can happen even when passengers are fine, so always
- 9:53get the car looked at after a lightning strike.
- 9:56And that is it. That is what happens when
- 9:58lightning strikes a car. The sky explodes, the metal
- 10:01shell around you does something extraordinary, and science
- 10:04quietly saves the day in a way nobody really talks about.
