- 0:00Mark Chapter 14 Now the Passover and unleavened bread were two
- 0:05days away, and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how
- 0:08to seize him by stealth and kill him, for they were saying not
- 0:11during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the
- 0:14people. While he was in Bethany, at the
- 0:17home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there
- 0:20came a woman with an alabaster vial, a very costly perfume of
- 0:23pure gnard, and she broke the vial and poured it over his
- 0:26head. But some were indignantly
- 0:28remarking to one another, Why has this perfume been wasted?
- 0:32For this perfume might have been sold for over 300 and Arai and
- 0:35the money given to the poor. And they were scolding her.
- 0:39But Jesus said, let her alone. Why do you bother her?
- 0:42She has done a good deed to me. For you always have the poor
- 0:45with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them.
- 0:49But you do not always have me. She has done what she could.
- 0:52She has anointed my body beforehand for the burial.
- 0:55Truly, I say to you, wherever the Gospel is preached in the
- 0:58whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in
- 1:02memory of her. Then Judas Iscariot, who was one
- 1:05of the 12, went off to the chief priests in order to betray him
- 1:08to them. They were glad when they heard
- 1:10this and promised to give him money.
- 1:12And he began seeking how to betray him at an opportune time.
- 1:16On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb
- 1:19was being sacrificed, his disciples said to him, Where do
- 1:23you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?
- 1:26And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the
- 1:30city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water.
- 1:33Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the
- 1:36house, the teacher says, Where is my guest room, in which I may
- 1:39eat the Passover with my disciples?
- 1:42And he himself will show you a large upper room, furnished and
- 1:45ready prepare for us. There the disciples went out and
- 1:49came to the city, and found it just as he had told them, and
- 1:52they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he came
- 1:55with the 12. As they were reclining at the
- 1:57table and eating, Jesus said, Truly I say to you that one of
- 2:01you will betray me, one who is eating with me.
- 2:04They began to be grieved, and say to him, 1 by 1, surely not
- 2:07I. And he said to them, It is one
- 2:10of the 12, one who dips with me in the bowl.
- 2:14For the Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of him.
- 2:17But woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
- 2:20It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.
- 2:24While they were eating, he took some bread, and after a blessing
- 2:27he broke it and gave it to them and said, Take it, this is my
- 2:31body. And when he had taken a cup and
- 2:33given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from
- 2:35it. And he said to them, This is my
- 2:38blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
- 2:41Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the
- 2:44vine until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.
- 2:48After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives, and
- 2:51Jesus said to them, You will all fall away, because it is
- 2:55written, I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be
- 2:58scattered. But after I've been raised, I
- 3:00will go ahead of you to Galilee. But Peter said to him, even
- 3:04though all may fall away, yet I will not.
- 3:07And Jesus said to him, truly, I say to you that this very night
- 3:11before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny me three
- 3:14times. But Peter kept saying
- 3:16insistently, Even if I have to die with you, I will not deny
- 3:20you. And they were all saying the
- 3:22same thing. Also.
- 3:24They came to a place named Gethsemane.
- 3:26And he said to his disciples, Sit here until I have prayed.
- 3:31And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be
- 3:33very distressed and troubled. And he said to them, My soul is
- 3:37deeply grieved to the point of death, remain here and keep
- 3:40watch. And he went a little beyond them
- 3:42and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were
- 3:45possible, the hour might pass him by.
- 3:48And he was saying, ABBA, Father, all things are possible for you.
- 3:53Remove this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will.
- 3:57And he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,
- 4:01Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one
- 4:04hour? Keep watching and praying that
- 4:06you may not come into temptation.
- 4:08The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
- 4:11Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
- 4:15And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were
- 4:18very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.
- 4:21And he came the third time and said to them, Are you still
- 4:24sleeping and resting? It is enough.
- 4:26The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is being
- 4:29betrayed into the hands of sinners.
- 4:31Get up, let us be going. Behold, the one who betrays me
- 4:36is at hand. Immediately while he was still
- 4:39speaking, Judas, one of the 12, came up, accompanied by a crowd
- 4:42with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the
- 4:45scribes and the elders. Now he who was betraying him had
- 4:48given them a signal, saying, Whomever I kiss, he is the one,
- 4:52seize him and lead him away under guard.
- 4:55After coming, Judas immediately went to him, saying Rabbi and
- 4:59kissed him. They laid hands on him and
- 5:01seized him. But one of those who stood by
- 5:03drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest, and
- 5:06cut off his ear. And Jesus said to them, Have you
- 5:10come out with swords and clubs to arrest me, as you would
- 5:13against a robber? Every day I was with you in the
- 5:16temple teaching, and you did not seize me.
- 5:19But this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.
- 5:22And they all left him and fled. A young man was following him,
- 5:25wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body, and
- 5:29they seized him, but he pulled free of the linen sheet and
- 5:31escaped naked. They led Jesus away to the high
- 5:34priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the
- 5:38scribes gathered together. Peter had followed him at a
- 5:41distance right into the courtyard of the high priest,
- 5:44and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at
- 5:47the fire. Now the chief priests and the
- 5:49whole council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus,
- 5:53to put him to death, and they were not finding any, for many
- 5:57were giving false testimony against him.
- 5:59But their testimony was not consistent.
- 6:01Some stood up and began to give false testimony against him,
- 6:04saying, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with
- 6:07hands, and in three days I will build another made without
- 6:10hands. Not even in this respect was
- 6:12their testimony consistent. The high priest stood up and
- 6:15came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, Do you not
- 6:18answer? What is it that these men are,
- 6:20that these men are testifying against you?
- 6:23But he kept silent and did not answer.
- 6:25Again the high priest was questioning him and saying to
- 6:28him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?
- 6:32And Jesus said, I am, and you shall see the Son of Man sitting
- 6:36at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of
- 6:38heaven, tearing his clothes. The high priest said, What
- 6:41further need do we have of witnesses?
- 6:44You have heard the blasphemy. How does it seem to you?
- 6:47And they all condemned him to be deserving of death.
- 6:50Some began to spit at him and to blindfold him, and to beat him
- 6:53with their fists, and to say to him prophecy.
- 6:56And the officers received him with slaps in the face.
- 7:00As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant
- 7:03girls of the high priest came, and seeing Peter warming
- 7:05himself, she looked at him and said, You also were with Jesus
- 7:09the Nazarene. But he denied it, saying, I
- 7:12neither know nor understand what you were talking about.
- 7:14And he went out onto the porch. The servant girl saw him, began
- 7:19once more to say to the bystanders, This is one of them.
- 7:22But again he denied it. And after a little while the
- 7:26bystanders were again saying to Peter, surely you are one of
- 7:29them, for you are a Galilean too.
- 7:31But he began to curse and swear, I do not know this man you are
- 7:35talking about. Immediately a rooster crowed a
- 7:38second time, and Peter remembered how Jesus had made
- 7:41the remark to him before. A rooster crows twice.
- 7:44You will deny me 3 times. And he began to weep.
