- 1:20Enough chit chat. Let's get on with the summer Speedos.
- 1:36My name is Kathy Boschman. I'm an active care portal
- 1:40responder and on the leadership team for Care Portal in Winnipeg.
- 1:46Earlier this year, a care portal request came via
- 1:50email to my inbox. The request was for a queen
- 1:53mattress and a toddler bed for a single mom with 4 children
- 1:57in the neighborhood very close to where I work. My husband
- 2:01and I brought the mattresses over late 1 evening,
- 2:05where we met the family and their friend who was there to help with getting
- 2:08the mattresses up the stairs.
- 2:12The kids were very excited. Mom wasn't feeling so
- 2:16great, but she insisted that we leave the mattresses in the living
- 2:20room and that they would manage.
- 2:24Mom struck me as a very calm and skilled parent,
- 2:28even while she was struggling with her health.
- 2:33The initial connection was short and hurried, which was disappointing,
- 2:37but not unusual for our first connection. I knew I'd be back
- 2:41with the bed frame, so I had hope of a better connection the following
- 2:44visit.
- 2:48When I returned to the family's home the next week, with the help of my
- 2:51friend, we were able to set up the beds and spend a little more time
- 2:54with this young family. The bedding, frames, and
- 2:58mattresses were donated through partnership with another church in our city that
- 3:01uses Care Portal. That provision
- 3:05was a huge help in getting the much needed resources for this family and
- 3:09creating the opportunity too for continued support.
- 3:13These items helped with transitioning a toddler out of a crib,
- 3:17which no longer contained her, and gave the mom the much needed
- 3:21rest. Watching mom soothe her baby
- 3:25in the midst of all the action of setting up the beds, I was
- 3:29impacted by her love and ability to attune to her baby's needs.
- 3:34I shared by observation that she is a baby whisperer, which
- 3:37she received with a smile. It meant so much to me that
- 3:41she knows for a special connection with her children.
- 3:46While we would all feel challenged in parenting for children
- 3:50without a partner, she recognizes the gift that they are.
- 3:54She truly inspires me. In my
- 3:58continued interactions with this family, I have seen mom's resourcefulness.
- 4:02She even invited me into an opportunity to care for someone in her
- 4:06community who was suffering a tragic loss.
- 4:10We teamed up to provide a couple of meals for them and activate a
- 4:14church nearby to continue that support.
- 4:18I am touched by her love, both for her children and for her community.
- 4:22I'm humbled
- 4:31around us who could use some support as we ourselves would like to
- 4:35have it. Her ability to receive and give makes me
- 4:39reflect on my own motivations and desires.
- 4:45This beautiful young woman has inspired me with her courage and
- 4:49her contentment. Her resilience and compassion for others led
- 4:53me to action. She gives me hope for the communities
- 4:57around me. As I think about the importance of
- 5:00community support, I recognize that the first step towards
- 5:04others can be the most challenging, and
- 5:07that doing it is so much better together.
- 5:11Truly, the benefit outweighs the risk.
- 5:17I encourage people to keep their eyes and ears open at how they
- 5:20can connect with their neighbors and show support. I
- 5:24also invite people to check out Care Portal as a community responder,
- 5:28small group, or even activating their whole church community.
- 5:32Everyone can do something.
- 5:36When I reflect on my connections in community because of Care
- 5:39Portal, I'm reminded that as I open my heart and
- 5:43my life to people in my neighborhood who may be in a hard
- 5:46place, that together, we can be transformed
- 5:50into the likeness of who we were created to be. There's
- 5:54hope to be found in the beauty of compassion and loving kindness for
- 5:581 another. I
- 6:01am grateful to be able to call this mom my friend, and knowing
- 6:05that I will be reaching out and hearing about what
- 6:09she is doing with her kids, and I can share with her what I'm doing
- 6:12with my family. And I'm just really
- 6:17impacted by who she is and so grateful for that
- 6:20connection.
