- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning and welcome back to Connecting
- 0:18the Dots. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Happy Friday,
- 0:20January 9th, 2026. We are here to help you connect
- 0:24the dots between the week's biggest tech moves.
- 0:26That's right. Not just headlines. but the context
- 0:30behind them. But first, let's get a quick lay
- 0:32of the land. If you're here with us in Sacramento,
- 0:35it is a chilly start. We've got some frost in
- 0:37areas. Yeah, bundle up. But it should clear up
- 0:40to a sunny high of about 52. Nationally, things
- 0:43are a bit more active. There are two big storm
- 0:46systems moving through the central and eastern
- 0:48US. Right, so expect gusty winds, rain, and some
- 0:52heavy snow. And if you're in the lower Mississippi
- 0:54River Valley or Tennessee Valley, Please be careful.
- 0:57There's a risk of severe thunderstorms and even
- 1:00some tornadoes. OK, onto the markets. They ended
- 1:02Thursday on a pretty positive note. They did.
- 1:05The Dow Jones closed at 49 ,266 .11. That's up,
- 1:09what, about 1 .63 % for the week. The S &P 500
- 1:12also saw some nice stable gains up about half
- 1:15a percent for the week. One spot to watch, though,
- 1:17is crypto. Bitcoin saw a bit of a pullback today.
- 1:20Yeah, down about almost 1 % to 90 ,219. And it's
- 1:24down almost 4 % for the week. So just a good
- 1:27reminder that even when the broader market is
- 1:30up, crypto can play by its own set of rules.
- 1:33Absolutely. Now before we get into the three
- 1:35huge stories from our Morningstar Tech Report,
- 1:38we want to give a shout out to our sponsor, Old
- 1:41Glory. Oh yeah, Old Glory. They are an iconic
- 1:44fan merchandise store. Just fantastic stuff.
- 1:47They really are. If you're looking for music
- 1:49tees, sports gear, or just a cool gift for that
- 1:52techie friend who has everything, they've got
- 1:54you covered. It's high quality gear. Just go
- 1:56check them out at OldGlory .com. And when you
- 1:58do, use the promo code SNARFL. That's S -N -A
- 2:01-R -F - you'll get 15 % off your entire purchase.
- 2:05Okay, let's get into it. First up, a major move
- 2:08from Microsoft that is, well, fundamentally changing
- 2:10how we shop online. Right. This is story one,
- 2:13the debut of copilot checkout in the U .S. And
- 2:16this is their big play into something called
- 2:18agentic commerce. So let's break that down. Agentic
- 2:22commerce means the AI doesn't just find a product
- 2:25for you, it buys it for you. Exactly. We're talking
- 2:28about conversational purchasing right inside
- 2:30the copilot chat. Whether you're on Bing, Edge,
- 2:34MSN, wherever. And I think the most important
- 2:37part of this whole thing is that you, the user,
- 2:40never leave the chat. You're not getting bounced
- 2:42to another website. Nope. You discover the product,
- 2:46you ask questions about it, you compare models,
- 2:49and then you complete the transaction payment,
- 2:51shipping, everything without ever being redirected.
- 2:54That's the holy grail for e -commerce, right?
- 2:57Removing that friction. It's everything. Think
- 3:00about how many sales are lost when someone has
- 3:02to click away and gets distracted. This eliminates
- 3:05that. And they're not doing this alone. They've
- 3:07got some heavy hitters on board. Oh, yeah. PayPal,
- 3:10Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy. And the Shopify integration
- 3:13is huge. Their merchants are being automatically
- 3:15enrolled. It is. But let's talk about PayPal
- 3:17for a second, because their role here is really
- 3:20interesting. I notice that. They're doing more
- 3:22than just processing the payment at the end.
- 3:24Way more. They're providing the entire backend
- 3:27infrastructure. So guest checkout, credit card
- 3:30processing, and this is the key. They're exposing
- 3:33merchant inventory directly to Copilot's AI.
- 3:37So PayPal is shifting from being just a button
- 3:39on a page to being the engine for this whole
- 3:42new way of shopping. That's a perfect way to
- 3:44put it. They're building the rails for the next
- 3:46generation of retail. OK, so that's the back
- 3:49end. On the front end for the shopper, we have
- 3:51these new brand agents. Right. And this is a
- 3:54huge advantage for businesses. A brand agent
- 3:56is an AI assistant that's trained only on that
- 3:59specific brand's products. So it speaks in the
- 4:01brand's voice? Exactly. It's like having a dedicated
- 4:05expert salesperson who's available 24 -7. It's
- 4:08not just a simple chat bot. It can actively guide
- 4:10you to a sale. Precisely. You can take a request
- 4:13like, I need a size 10 running shoe for trail
- 4:15running under $150, and walk you all the way
- 4:18through to the final purchase. And it works.
- 4:20The data is already showing that sessions with
- 4:22these brand agents have much higher engagement.
- 4:24And stronger conversion rates. We saw that example
- 4:26with Ashley Global Retail, the furniture company.
- 4:29Oh, right. Buying furniture is so complex, they're
- 4:32using it to help people find, design, and buy
- 4:34pieces just through conversation. It's a game
- 4:36changer. But the bigger picture here is about
- 4:40competitive pressure. Because everyone else is
- 4:43doing this too pretty much Google has this with
- 4:46Gemini open AI has instant checkout in chat GPT
- 4:49This is the new standard so if you're a retailer
- 4:51online you now have a major choice to make you
- 4:54do Do you stay as an external website that people
- 4:57have to click away to or do you plug directly
- 5:00into these AI? Assistance the new gatekeepers
- 5:03of well everything it really creates a scenario
- 5:06where the company that controls the agent wins
- 5:09if your AI can handle the purchase and your competitors
- 5:12can't. Why would a consumer ever leave? Exactly.
- 5:15The age of frictionless retail is officially
- 5:17here. Let's shift gears now to our second story.
- 5:20We're going from a smooth user experience to
- 5:22a much, much rougher one. Yeah, this is about
- 5:25the controversy around X and Grok's image generation
- 5:28feature. So to set the stage, Grok's image tool
- 5:32has been under intense fire from regulators globally.
- 5:35Right, the UK, the EU, India. All because it
- 5:39was being used to create non -consensual sexualized
- 5:42deepfakes. A really serious problem. X and XAI
- 5:46did come out and denounce the misuse, saying
- 5:48they'd treat it like any other illegal content.
- 5:51But the question is, what did they actually do
- 5:53about it? Well, their response was a partial
- 5:55restriction. OK, what does that mean? It means
- 5:57that if you're a free user on X and you try to
- 6:00tag at Grok in a reply to make an image, you
- 6:03now get a message saying, It's limited to paying
- 6:06subscribers. So on the surface, it looks like
- 6:08they put this feature behind a paywall to address
- 6:11the safety issue. On the surface, yes. But if
- 6:14you dig just a little deeper, you find the real
- 6:16story. That restriction only applies to that
- 6:18one specific command. The at grok reply tag.
- 6:21Exactly. It's a limit on the most public, visible
- 6:24way to access the tool. It's not a limit on the
- 6:26tool itself. Wait, so free users can still make
- 6:28images with grok? Yes. They can go to the standalone
- 6:32grok app or website and use the full tool or
- 6:36They can just long press on any image on X and
- 6:39hit the edit image button which uses the same
- 6:41generator So they block the front door but left
- 6:43the side doors wide open. That's the criticism
- 6:46Yeah, it suggests the move was less about safety
- 6:49and more about monetizing the feature by making
- 6:51the easy -to -use command a paid perk Which is
- 6:54a very different approach from what we see from
- 6:56say Google or open AI a stark contrast they've
- 7:00built in really strict sometimes controversial
- 7:03safety guardrails at the model level to prevent
- 7:06this kind of abuse for all users whether they're
- 7:09paying or not this really raises a big question
- 7:11about platform responsibility doesn't it it does
- 7:13If a tool can be used to create illegal content,
- 7:16just making it slightly harder to access doesn't
- 7:19solve the problem. It just kind of hides it.
- 7:21And critics are pointing out that it effectively
- 7:23makes harassment a paid feature. Which is not
- 7:25a great look, especially with regulators in the
- 7:28EU watching so closely. Not at all. We'll definitely
- 7:31be keeping an eye on how they respond to this
- 7:33partial fix. Okay, let's move on to our third
- 7:36and final story. This one really gets at the
- 7:40sheer scale of the AI boom and its incredible
- 7:43appetite for energy. Yeah, this is a huge move
- 7:45from Metta and it shows how Big Tech is now actively
- 7:49shaping energy policy. We're talking about a
- 7:51massive pivot to nuclear power. It all comes
- 7:54down to the power demand. Metta is building these
- 7:57gigantic data centers like their new AI supercluster
- 8:01in Ohio. And Ohio already has, what, 172 data
- 8:05centers? More than several neighboring states
- 8:07combined. The amount of electricity these things
- 8:09need is just staggering, and it's growing exponentially.
- 8:13So they can't just buy power off the grid anymore.
- 8:15They have to secure it for the future. Right.
- 8:17And they've done that with two enormous deals,
- 8:19starting with a company called Vistra. And this
- 8:21Vistra deal is historic. It really is. Metta
- 8:25signed 20 year agreements to buy over 2600 megawatts
- 8:29of zero carbon nuclear energy. That's an incredible
- 8:31amount of power. And it's coming from existing
- 8:33nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. But
- 8:36what's the real strategic angle here? It's more
- 8:39than just buying power, right? It is. Metta isn't
- 8:41just buying what already exists. They are directly
- 8:44paying to expand the infrastructure. The deal
- 8:47supports the largest nuclear upgrades ever backed
- 8:50by a corporate customer in the U .S. Okay, so
- 8:52an upgrade is an equipment upgrade that boosts
- 8:55a plant's capacity. Exactly. Meta is funding
- 8:57the expansion that will add new, clean power
- 9:00to the grid. And in return, they get a guaranteed
- 9:03supply of reliable zero -carbon energy for decades.
- 9:07It gives Vistra the financial certainty they
- 9:09need to do the upgrades and extend their operating
- 9:11licenses. It's a win -win that locks in Meta's
- 9:15power supply well into the 2040s. That is a massive
- 9:18competitive advantage. While everyone else is
- 9:20scrambling for power, Metta has secured their
- 9:22own. And that's just their plan for existing
- 9:25tech. They also made another deal that looks
- 9:27even further into the future with a company called
- 9:29Oklo. This is where it gets really futuristic.
- 9:32It really does. Yeah. They've agreed to build
- 9:34a 1 .2 gigawatt nuclear power campus in Pike
- 9:37County, Ohio. And Oklo is developing advanced
- 9:40reactors. Specifically, an advanced fast reactor
- 9:43called the Aurora Powerhouse. And here's the
- 9:45most amazing part, the fuel source. This is the
- 9:48part that blew my mind. It runs on recycled nuclear
- 9:51waste. Incredible. So it generates massive amounts
- 9:53of clean energy while also helping to solve one
- 9:56of the biggest environmental challenges we face.
- 9:58It's a closed loop system. And just like with
- 10:01Vistra, Metta is prepaying for the power. Which
- 10:04gives Oklo the capital they need to actually
- 10:06build this thing. Exactly. Pre -construction
- 10:09starts this year with the first power coming
- 10:11online around 2030. The market's reaction said
- 10:14it all. Oklo's stock shot up 20%. Vistra jumped
- 10:1814%. When a company like Metta makes a multi
- 10:21-decade bet on advanced nuclear, it tells you
- 10:24everything you need to know about the future
- 10:25of AI. The bottleneck isn't just chips anymore.
- 10:28It's power. Raw, reliable, always on power. This
- 10:32is Big Tech moving from being a consumer of energy
- 10:35to a driver of industrial policy. A fascinating
- 10:38shift. Before we wrap up, we want to thank our
- 10:40other fantastic sponsor, Skoni. Skoni, that's
- 10:43S -K -O -N -I. They make premium golf shoes.
- 10:45If you're looking to step up your game with really
- 10:47high quality, stylish footwear, you have to check
- 10:50them out. They really are great shoes. Head over
- 10:52to skoni .com and be sure to use the promo code
- 10:55SNARFUL, S -N -A -R -F -U -L, at checkout. That'll
- 10:59get you 15 % off your entire purchase. Okay,
- 11:02so let's quickly recap the three dots we connected
- 11:04today. First, Microsoft's push into agented commerce
- 11:07with copilot checkout. They're making shopping
- 11:09completely frictionless, and it means that every
- 11:12major AI platform now needs to have a buy button
- 11:15built right in. Second, we looked at the ExxonGrot
- 11:18controversy. They put a limit on the easiest
- 11:21command to generate images, but left the actual
- 11:24tool free and accessible elsewhere. It raises
- 11:27serious questions about whether they're prioritizing
- 11:29monetization over safety. And finally, Meta's
- 11:32giant leap into nuclear power. By funding both
- 11:35existing plant upgrades with Vistra and next
- 11:37-gen reactors with Oklo, they're showing that
- 11:40the future of AI dominance depends on securing
- 11:42massive amounts of clean energy. The common thread
- 11:44here is just the sheer scale of investment the
- 11:47AI revolution demands. It's tectonic. It really
- 11:49is. And it leaves you with this thought to chew
- 11:51on. As these AI models get bigger and bigger,
- 11:55we'll access to reliable zero carbon power, not
- 11:59just better chips, become the single biggest
- 12:01factor that determines who wins the AI race.
- 12:04A fascinating question to end the week on. We're
