- 0:00I'm Bree. I'm Nick. And this is The Apocalypse
- 0:03Will Be Podcasted. We are a married couple from
- 0:06Atlanta with boring day jobs. We've been together
- 0:0912 years and we usually create a lot of weird
- 0:11performance art so that we can entertain people.
- 0:14But we are trying our hand at podcasting because
- 0:16we have had an obsession in the last six months.
- 0:18And that obsession is dungeon crawler Carl. Yep.
- 0:22This is a spoiler podcast where we will be talking
- 0:26about plot points from all seven Dungeon Crawler
- 0:29Carl books. That's right. This podcast is going
- 0:32to be completely full of spoilers. If you are
- 0:35looking for a podcast about Dungeon Crawler Carl
- 0:37without spoilers, this is not the place to be.
- 0:41The only information that we're not going to
- 0:43be touching on is information about book eight
- 0:46that's available on the Patreon. We wanted to
- 0:49start with book seven and go from there because
- 0:51we want to be ready to jump into book eight when
- 0:54that comes out sometime next year and then be
- 0:57able to go into talking about the TV show. Definitely.
- 0:59And just the way that the books are, it didn't
- 1:02make sense to me at least to start with book
- 1:05one and just describe what happened. I don't
- 1:08think that there's a lot of meaningful content
- 1:10there. There are so many things that are foreshadowing
- 1:13what's coming later that it just. Right. Feels
- 1:17to me like it makes sense to talk about the whole
- 1:18series. Yeah, that's not going to be nearly as
- 1:20much fun to not be able to say, oh, wait, this
- 1:23leads to this and this leads to this. Not nearly
- 1:26as fun. So I got into Dungeon Crawler Carl first.
- 1:30It was recommended to me by a good friend. I
- 1:33was talking to him and saying that I was really
- 1:36looking for a new book. I had read Robert Evans'
- 1:39book, After the Revolution, and I just loved
- 1:42the chaos of it. apocalyptic vibe, how over the
- 1:46top, violent, crazy, ridiculous it was. My friend
- 1:50was like, you got to check out this series. It's
- 1:53great. But he described it as popcorn literature.
- 1:56I don't think anything where the apocalypse happens
- 1:58on page one is popcorn literature. We actually
- 2:01had the same friend over the other night and
- 2:03we were telling him a little bit about our podcast
- 2:05research for the next couple of episodes. And
- 2:07he was like, oh, yeah. That got so complicated,
- 2:10I think I put it down and I was planning on coming
- 2:12back to it later. So I'm not sure he still agrees
- 2:14with that label either. Yeah, he definitely reneged
- 2:17on that a little bit. Apocalypse doesn't quite
- 2:19happen on page one, but very, very early on in
- 2:22the book. I started listening to it and I was
- 2:26hooked immediately. I was listening to it in
- 2:30the car and they'd just gotten into the dungeon.
- 2:33It was at the point where they got into the tutorial
- 2:36guild. And Brie was in the car with me and Carl
- 2:39gives the special pet biscuit to Donut. And she
- 2:42turns into like the glob of stuff. And Brie was
- 2:44like, what's happening to the cat? Is the cat
- 2:46okay? If something happens to the cat, I am out.
- 2:49Definitely. And I will say that it takes a very
- 2:53bold writer to kill a cat in chapter three. So
- 2:55I think I should have realized that Donut was
- 2:57going to be okay. But someone else that we know
- 2:59said that he also read Kaiju Battlefield Earth.
- 3:02And that you should not say things like that
- 3:05because Matt Deniman might kill the cat in chapter
- 3:07three. Fortunately, he didn't. So I was listening
- 3:11and I think I was on two by the time that Brie
- 3:15decided she was also going to pick up the series.
- 3:17And she is a Olympic speed reader. She's like
- 3:20a freak of nature when it comes to reading. And
- 3:23by the time I was halfway through book three,
- 3:26she had already finished reading the entire series.
- 3:29It was really fun because I would have to be
- 3:32like, so has that thing happened yet? And Nikki
- 3:36would be like, what thing? And I was like, you'll
- 3:38know. You'll know when the thing happens. Yeah,
- 3:41especially when she brought up the Viva La Revolucion.
- 3:44And I just had no idea. And then even when I
- 3:48got to that point, I still had no idea. And that
- 3:51was something we both had to go online after
- 3:54the fact and look up exactly what transpired
- 3:57there. And that's... Something we'll definitely
- 3:59cover at some point in this series. There's a
- 4:02really unique difference between listening to
- 4:05the audiobooks and reading them because the audiobooks
- 4:08being narrated by Jeff Hayes, he's just such
- 4:10a talented voice actor. I didn't believe that
- 4:14he was the voice actor for all the characters.
- 4:16I just assumed like and Carl were two different
- 4:19voice actors. And when I finally found out that
- 4:22it was all just Jeff, I was like mind blown.
- 4:25If you haven't seen the video of him going through
- 4:27the different voices on YouTube, I highly recommend
- 4:29it. Yeah, that's a lot of fun. Seeing him switch
- 4:32back and forth so quickly, it's crazy. There
- 4:35are still different things that kind of pop out
- 4:37to you as a book reader as opposed to an audio
- 4:40listener. And some of the lines I thought were
- 4:42the funniest in the series weren't really emphasized
- 4:45in the audiobooks in a way that I felt like people
- 4:49were able to recognize. At least I wasn't. Yeah,
- 4:53one of my favorite lines in the series is when
- 4:55Zev is looking at the art show contest and she's
- 4:59looking at the picture like, Carl, I've looked
- 5:03at this a lot and I just don't get it. Yeah,
- 5:06I'm like that. I just kind of went right over
- 5:08my head. I just kept going. Maybe the slightest
- 5:10chuckle. Another great example of the listening
- 5:13versus reading experience is in Gate of the Feral
- 5:16Gods when they're underwater and they've escaped
- 5:19the submarine. And Carl is coming up through
- 5:22the water and he's got Donut passed out in his
- 5:25arms. And then when she wakes up, the chapter
- 5:28ends with and Donut proceeds to lose her absolute
- 5:31fucking shit. And that was just so hilarious
- 5:35to me. But Brie told me about that scene later
- 5:37on that when that happened, there was just several
- 5:39pages of like spelled out. Maybe not four or
- 5:43five pages, but it goes on for a while. It's
- 5:45definitely one of my favorite parts of the book.
- 5:47Another one of my favorite reading versus listening
- 5:49experiences is you asked me, so when Preparatente
- 5:54screams, what does that look like in the book?
- 5:56And I was like, it just says he screamed in my
- 5:59face. And I absolutely love that as well. And
- 6:03in the audio book, I love hearing the actual
- 6:06scream every single time it happens. It gets
- 6:09me. So we want to talk a little bit more about
- 6:11why we love these books, what got us into the
- 6:13books and what kept it going for us. And for
- 6:15me. You know, it drew me in from the very beginning.
- 6:19Apocalypse, billions of people die. You know,
- 6:21the way that the apocalypse happens, everything
- 6:23with a roof or structure is just flattened immediately.
- 6:26Such a cool way of doing it. And then it starts
- 6:28out and it's just kind of ridiculous and weird
- 6:30and crazy. You know, he gets in there. He's getting
- 6:33chased by a bunch of goblins. He's punching goblins
- 6:35in the face that have pineapples on sticks. You
- 6:38don't really know what's going on. It's just
- 6:40kind of silly because you have no frame of reference
- 6:43for really what's happening. And then. you know,
- 6:46right after he finishes with the tutorial and
- 6:49it's the first time they're doing the announcement
- 6:51and they talk about how within the first hour,
- 6:54you know, from the 11 million that entered, several
- 6:57million people die. And that's when you start
- 7:02kind of seeing the impact of this and how dangerous
- 7:04it is. The video game aspect of it all also really
- 7:07drew me and I loved having an inventory, having
- 7:09a HUD. I loved the... AI giving descriptions
- 7:13of things it was silly and ridiculous descriptions
- 7:16and Carl's like what the hell is even going on
- 7:18here but it starts to draw you in really quickly
- 7:21when especially when they get to the first boss
- 7:24fight and it's the hoarder I actually speak Spanish
- 7:28fluently I think that scene is kind of meant
- 7:30to be unnerving anyways but listening to that
- 7:33and actually understanding what she was saying
- 7:36I was like wow this is kind of fucked up but
- 7:38later in the series in It's right after the Butcher's
- 7:42Masquerade ends. And Carl and Dona are talking.
- 7:47She's talking about how she's wearing this mask.
- 7:49And Carl explains that she's wearing it and she's
- 7:52not going to be able to take it off anytime soon.
- 7:55And she says, I don't like it, Carl. And that
- 7:58was such a powerful moment in the series and
- 8:02just really made me cry. And I think from there,
- 8:04things just keep getting more and more intense.
- 8:08the dynamics between these characters the close
- 8:11bonds that they have it just really keeps ramping
- 8:15up funny enough i was reading book seven today
- 8:18and rosita actually says that the reason that
- 8:21she decided to go into the dungeon and align
- 8:23herself with carl was that mask speech and that
- 8:26it meant a lot to her although she said spoilers
- 8:29even though this is a spoiler podcast That Rosetta
- 8:32really felt for them and had a lot of empathy
- 8:35for them because they didn't know yet that the
- 8:37mask never would come off. Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:39And I actually forgot about that part with Rosetta
- 8:42and her relaying that to Carl and Donut. Yeah,
- 8:46definitely. And I will say that when I first
- 8:49started reading the books, I was mostly reading
- 8:51for Donut because I am a crazy cat lady. I'm
- 8:55very obsessed with cats and I can admit that.
- 8:59I think when I really felt the buy -in and was
- 9:02really invested in the series is actually the
- 9:04first time they went on Odette's show. And it
- 9:07became clear that this was more than just going
- 9:10through and punching gerbils because that's not
- 9:13really my thing. But just the behind the scenes
- 9:17of how they're manipulating people, what it says
- 9:21about our society and social media and how you
- 9:26have to like create personas and stuff like that.
- 9:28That is when I became extremely interested. And
- 9:32then as the books progressed, I love the interplanetary
- 9:36politics. I love the stuff about the different
- 9:39alien races. Hard agree. And that really made
- 9:44the books so much better for me because I'm a
- 9:47completionist for sure. But a lot of people will
- 9:50go on Reddit and they'll be like, well, you know,
- 9:52I've read one book and I'm not that into it.
- 9:55And I'm like. This is a series that absolutely
- 9:58gets better as it goes along, which is why we're
- 10:00starting with book seven for sure. And that's
- 10:02definitely a difference between Brie and I. I
- 10:04get hooked by the violence and the video game
- 10:06aspects and how silly and ridiculous it is. And
- 10:08then she gets hooked by the interplanetary politics.
- 10:11That, of course, gets me later on, but that wasn't
- 10:13the initial hook for me. And I think that's why
- 10:16we're good people to have a podcast is because
- 10:18I think we are very different and have very different
- 10:20perspectives, both in what we like and also just
- 10:24in the fact that. You listen to the audiobooks
- 10:27and I read the book. So I think we definitely
- 10:29have different perspectives that can play off
- 10:31each other and not a lot. The other reason that
- 10:34I am really obsessed with the book is actually
- 10:37because we have our own princess show cat. So
- 10:41our cat, Nefi, is a purebred snowshoe Siamese.
- 10:45And we did get her from a shelter. And when we
- 10:49got her, I just could not comprehend how such
- 10:53a well -behaved... beautiful cat could have ever
- 10:57been in a shelter and i did think about the people
- 11:01who left them there and well left her on the
- 11:04street uh she didn't get left on the street it's
- 11:08more dramatic that way yeah definitely um and
- 11:12don't let the truth get in the way of a good
- 11:13story so i have considered both the thought process
- 11:17of what would have to go through someone's brain
- 11:20before they dropped a perfect beautiful, wonderful
- 11:25cat off at the shelter. And I've also thought
- 11:29about, you know, does my cat have trauma from
- 11:32this? How does she feel about it? Was this awful
- 11:36for her? And so seeing both sides of that play
- 11:40out in the book was really meaningful to me in
- 11:42a way that I don't think that everyone can quite
- 11:45understand. You went to Dragon Con last month
- 11:47in September. It's the third largest sci -fi
- 11:50and fantasy convention in the U .S. here in Atlanta.
- 11:53And we were super stoked going into it because
- 11:57we are really obsessed with Dungeon Crawler Carl.
- 11:59And we decided to dress up as Princess Donut
- 12:02and Carl. And we kind of decided we were going
- 12:04to center our whole con experience around that.
- 12:09Yeah, it was definitely the it thing this year.
- 12:11That and Claire Obscure, which is a video game,
- 12:14were the two hot things at Dragon Con this year.
- 12:16More people were dressed up as those characters
- 12:19than anything else. We went to a Dungeon Crawler
- 12:21Carl photo shoot. that had maybe about 500 people
- 12:26somebody went through and counted and there was
- 12:28a photo that was just Carl it was about 180 people
- 12:32and I think there was about 120 donuts right
- 12:35and there were some other really good cosplays
- 12:38as well someone dressed up as Orin which like
- 12:41amazing costume there was a sexy Mongo that was
- 12:45phenomenal yeah we live in Atlanta where it's
- 12:48really hot so we have to have sexy everything
- 12:49right we really do So there was going to be a
- 12:54few panels throughout the weekend that we were
- 12:55going to attend. And the first one, it was apparent
- 13:00right away how popular it was. I got in line
- 13:03an hour and a half early. Yeah. And another one
- 13:06of them, the line, there was probably like 700
- 13:08people in line and there was a person who was
- 13:11managing the line. And she was basically crying
- 13:13because I think there was way more people and
- 13:16she expected to show up. One of the great experiences
- 13:18was at this sidekick panel. where they were discussing
- 13:22the role that sidekicks play in different stories,
- 13:26and they were discussing what happens when a
- 13:29sidekick becomes such a big character that they
- 13:33start to actually outshine the main character
- 13:35of the story. And Matt had a really funny comment
- 13:38about this. He said that he decided that he was
- 13:42going to write the entire book series from the
- 13:46perspective of the sidekick, and even went so
- 13:48far as to name the book series after the sidekick,
- 13:52Carl. Yeah, that was hilarious. It was really
- 13:56fun because we had a Samantha head that was part
- 13:59of our costume. And we basically had this doll
- 14:03with a huge hole in it. And we were like, we
- 14:06need to put something in the Nessie. So we had
- 14:09Nessie candy and I did get to give Matt Nessie
- 14:11candy, which I went up to him. I was like, hi,
- 14:14Matt, do you want some Nessie candy? And he was
- 14:16like, fuck yes, I want Nessie candy. And he said,
- 14:19you know what? I put Nessie. in the book one
- 14:22time. Now everybody is obsessed with it. So we
- 14:26just throughout the whole weekend, we were interacting
- 14:28with fans and talking to people. So many people
- 14:32said that they had finished the series and then
- 14:35have already read through it or listened through
- 14:37it two, three, four, five times. And it was just
- 14:41a really cool experience, but it was glaringly
- 14:45obvious and apparent that there was a lot of
- 14:49hunger. for more content and that was when we
- 14:54kind of had the idea that hey we should start
- 14:57a podcast about this yeah and it was so much
- 15:00fun getting to meet all the other donuts and
- 15:02carls but we really wanted to set up the dragon
- 15:04con experience because we will be referencing
- 15:06information that we got from one of those panels
- 15:09right and that's where we're going to end things
- 15:13for today next episode we're going to be starting
- 15:15our discussion of book seven and start really
- 15:17getting into the nitty -gritty of everything
- 15:19But please be gentle with us as we're starting
- 15:23with Polly's chapter, which is very complicated.
- 15:26And we're going to be getting into the differences
- 15:29between the different factions of residuals.
- 15:32So it's a lot. It's daunting. Definitely. But
- 15:36I will say it has been reassuring to go back
- 15:38and read some old threads that I think. Everyone
- 15:41is wrong on their theories sometimes, and that
- 15:44is kind of the nature of a unfinished series
- 15:47in a series where the narrator is supposed to
- 15:49be somewhat unreliable. Absolutely. Well, thank
