- 2:54Speaker 1: about you, and children's book Arthur. Please welcome to Money
- 2:57Speaker 1: Making Conversations, Nick Cannon. Appreciate the intro to bring them
- 3:04Speaker 1: out as they said, you know what I'm saying. When
- 3:06Speaker 1: you gotta when you gotta resume, don't leave it on
- 3:08Speaker 1: the floor. And you got an incredible resume. Man. I
- 3:11Speaker 1: appreciate you started doing stand up, Yes, sir, why why? Why?
- 3:16Speaker 1: Coming from the church. Honestly, I mean my father was
- 3:19Speaker 1: into the ministry. And actually it goes back even before that.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I mean the first time I was ever officially on
- 3:24Speaker 1: stage doing stand up, I was about eleven years old
- 3:27Speaker 1: and it was auditioned North Carolina for the Apollo and
- 3:31Speaker 1: it was like, you know, it was like the Apollo
- 3:33Speaker 1: used to travel to find, you know, different acts, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: they were put on small talent shows in smaller regions
- 3:40Speaker 1: and in North Carolina, my dad I would always like,
- 3:42Speaker 1: get up and you know, tell Jesus jokes in the
- 3:45Speaker 1: church and stuff, and my dad was like, yeah, you
- 3:46Speaker 1: should audition. I put together a hole set when I
- 3:48Speaker 1: was eleven, and then from there just kept at it.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And by the time you know, I was fifteen years old,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I was a regular at the comedy store and improvs
- 3:56Speaker 1: in l A. So, you know, just try. I knew
- 3:58Speaker 1: I was doing I following in my father's footsteps where
- 4:01Speaker 1: I was sending too much to be a preacher. So
- 4:05Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, I'm gonna go ahead
- 4:07Speaker 1: and just still try to lead the flock. But he
- 4:10Speaker 1: believed in ye just talking about what's the upcoming, the
- 4:14Speaker 1: future and the present of Nick Cannon Wilding Out. Let
- 4:19Speaker 1: me just get a little history on that. I went
- 4:20Speaker 1: to the very first tape in the Wilder Out. The
- 4:22Speaker 1: idea was people pushed back on the idea. Yeah, you
- 4:26Speaker 1: took me there to reach out and look at it,
- 4:28Speaker 1: look at what I've done, and to see we're walking
- 4:31Speaker 1: in Atlanta, Georgia. Branding as I walked in. Branding on
- 4:34Speaker 1: the wall, branding on the behind the bar, branding on
- 4:38Speaker 1: the pool table, branding on everywhere it was it was
- 4:41Speaker 1: Nick Cannon and that's your production that Cannon presents. Yes,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, the Wilding Out models coming out everybody. It
- 4:50Speaker 1: was very organized for a young man. Yeah, impressive, Thank you, sir.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Tell us about that brand and tell us about the
- 4:58Speaker 1: future wild and Out. Really trying to diversify the brand
- 5:01Speaker 1: more than anything, Uh, tap into it and see how
- 5:04Speaker 1: many verticals I can get out of it. When I
- 5:06Speaker 1: first created it, I knew it was I wasn't calling
- 5:08Speaker 1: it a brand name, but I knew it was more
- 5:11Speaker 1: of the culture and I hadn't really seen it since
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Deaf Jam days to where someone actually could put
- 5:19Speaker 1: it out there in a way where people would want
- 5:21Speaker 1: to wear t shirts. People would want to go see
- 5:23Speaker 1: a live show people, and you could put it on
- 5:26Speaker 1: on any platform and would actually still succeed. And because
- 5:30Speaker 1: we started in a comedy club, you know, I rented out.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Uh what club was that? The Comedy Union. Yeah, and uh,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, we we got that. I got some cameras together,
- 5:44Speaker 1: got some friends that you know, we weren't as known
- 5:46Speaker 1: back then, like Kevin Hard and Cat Williams and you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: all of those guys, and everybody just came together. I
- 5:53Speaker 1: was like, Yo, this is this is something really cool.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And from there, I knew it could be improv school.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I knew it could be a live stage show. I
- 6:01Speaker 1: knew it could be a television show. I knew it
- 6:03Speaker 1: could be a board game. And I saw all of
- 6:05Speaker 1: this back then, and now I'm actually getting those opportunities
- 6:08Speaker 1: to bring those things to pass. And you know, um
- 6:10Speaker 1: learning this this touring game. I mean, we're going out
- 6:13Speaker 1: our second time. This time we're going out with a
- 6:14Speaker 1: g to all the arenas. Yeah, We're going all across
- 6:21Speaker 1: the country on a thirty city tour, uh, starting at
- 6:23Speaker 1: the end of the summer. And you know it's funny.
- 6:26Speaker 1: One of the first comedy tours. The first time I
- 6:28Speaker 1: was ever officially even really on tour, it was you
- 6:32Speaker 1: took me out. We we did that. It was it
- 6:34Speaker 1: was a short run, but we had we had some
- 6:36Speaker 1: good sponsors and and we took some young people out
- 6:39Speaker 1: on out on the road. And I remember at the
- 6:41Speaker 1: time it was like myself a little j J. Actually,
- 6:44Speaker 1: now I just put back on wilding out now, asked me, now,
- 6:48Speaker 1: producer on the show, have you j J? Yeah? He
- 6:52Speaker 1: on the show like so, but to say, like you
- 6:54Speaker 1: showed me the ropes on a lot of this, especially
- 6:56Speaker 1: when it comes to the live shows and you know
- 6:58Speaker 1: all the things that you know, you produced and put
- 7:00Speaker 1: for UH for our community. Early on, I was just learning, man,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and so now to be able to sit here and say,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you know, I'm doing the same thing and giving other
- 7:08Speaker 1: young people opportunities to show their skill sets and talent
- 7:11Speaker 1: as an outstanding, it's really interesting because you know, when
- 7:13Speaker 1: I came to the tape and I came like Roushan
- 7:17Speaker 1: was suited. Yeah, and it's so funny, and it's so funny.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I walked in and Uh I was with a dale
- 7:23Speaker 1: conversation and as we were as he was walking up
- 7:26Speaker 1: then they looked behind they see me, they go, come on,
- 7:28Speaker 1: come on, come on, like like I owned the building.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Different it's a different culture and it's just like that
- 7:34Speaker 1: coming when I did in two. So I really know
- 7:37Speaker 1: that it's special now. But you're taking this to the
- 7:39Speaker 1: restaurant world. Yes, that's exciting. I mean, it's it's challenging us.
- 7:46Speaker 1: It's definitely challenging, but it's a whole new world when
- 7:49Speaker 1: you get into the food and beverage game. Uh, there's
- 7:52Speaker 1: there's different rules. And we opened our first restaurant Memorial
- 7:56Speaker 1: Day weekend and uh Miami right on South Beach, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: it was it's continuing to be extremely successful. Our next
- 8:04Speaker 1: one is in San Diego, California, my hometown, and then
- 8:07Speaker 1: we're gonna do Los Angeles, Atlanta, Vegas, New York and
- 8:11Speaker 1: probably have a half a dozen open before the end
- 8:13Speaker 1: of the year. And it's it's a it's a whole
- 8:16Speaker 1: new game. I mean, but I'm watching David Busters, I've
- 8:18Speaker 1: seen Hooters. I've seen all of these different um restaurants
- 8:23Speaker 1: who tap into a market and they just they printing money, man,
- 8:26Speaker 1: And there's nothing been specifically catered to our community, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: or whether we want to call it the hip hop
- 8:32Speaker 1: culture of the African American community, to where you can
- 8:35Speaker 1: go in and watch a game, have a good time,
- 8:37Speaker 1: play video games, all this stuff that but you feel
- 8:40Speaker 1: at home. You feel and it's and it's to a
- 8:42Speaker 1: brand that you recognize that you can embrace, that welcomes everyone.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But it speaks our language. And I love the fact
- 8:47Speaker 1: that you you compared it to David Buster type because
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's really what it is. Great food, right, Uh, kind
- 8:53Speaker 1: of like a play land atmosphere and and but just
- 8:56Speaker 1: but everybody in there looks like you in the sense
- 8:58Speaker 1: of that culture a hundred nights. I'm glad you did.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'm glad you went to say the hip hop because
- 9:03Speaker 1: hip hop covers everybody, every white Eyrican Americans. It's a language,
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's a language. It's a language is so very powerful
- 9:11Speaker 1: that there's now it's taken over. You know, you're taking
- 9:13Speaker 1: advantage of that now. So I love that fact. So
- 9:16Speaker 1: so with that said, how does the tour work? How
- 9:19Speaker 1: does that wild? And is nick Kinna going to be
- 9:21Speaker 1: at every tour day? That will be at every tour date? Uh? Yeah,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I would definitely be there. We did. We did about
- 9:29Speaker 1: twenty dates last year and we learned so much. Are
- 9:32Speaker 1: you taping those? We are taking up learning from your
- 9:37Speaker 1: learning from uh But you know what it's it's as
- 9:41Speaker 1: much as you get when you watch the twenty two
- 9:43Speaker 1: minutes show at home. But now we're gonna give you
- 9:46Speaker 1: an hour and a half of entertainment. So we bring
- 9:48Speaker 1: two of your favorite rappers you know that you love.
- 9:51Speaker 1: The last we had Rick Ross and your body Walk.
- 9:54Speaker 1: A flock a bunch of people came on toward it,
- 9:56Speaker 1: so we we're bringing the hottest guys with this. One
- 9:59Speaker 1: opens the show, on one closes the show, and then
- 10:01Speaker 1: between you get four stand up comics as well as
- 10:03Speaker 1: the games that you see on Wilding Out. So we
- 10:06Speaker 1: bring the crowd up and we play the family reunion games,
- 10:09Speaker 1: the rap battle, wilding Out wild style games, so we
- 10:12Speaker 1: do all of that so you feel like you're extremely fulfilled.
- 10:14Speaker 1: You see the Wilding Out girls, you get you're gonna
- 10:17Speaker 1: do local market searchers for the wild and Out girls
- 10:19Speaker 1: and see you on top of that every scene. And
- 10:23Speaker 1: it's funny like half of the young ladies that are
- 10:25Speaker 1: on the show now we found on the tour last year.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So keep our word. We come to the town. We
- 10:30Speaker 1: allow the crowd in the in the hometown to vote
- 10:32Speaker 1: for the girls that they feel that they want to
- 10:34Speaker 1: see on the show, and it makes everyone feel part
- 10:37Speaker 1: of it. We bring the community to the show and
- 10:40Speaker 1: the show to the community. I don't know if you've
- 10:41Speaker 1: ever been to a Universal Soul service. Yes, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's that energy, It's that music, is that feeling, is
- 10:47Speaker 1: that family, And it's so close. Yeah, it's so close.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And when I was watching, I go, wow, it's that field,
- 10:52Speaker 1: which is really which means that you're you're combined so
- 10:55Speaker 1: many fantastic entertainment elements and you can bring masters to
- 10:59Speaker 1: bring p T. Bottom over here. And that's what that's
- 11:02Speaker 1: what that's so amazed. So so so when you come
- 11:05Speaker 1: to the cities, you do recruit or you do Marvel
- 11:07Speaker 1: searchers localizes it. We give the opportunity a lot of
- 11:11Speaker 1: times if there's uh strong comedians in the in the yeah, yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and we tap in with the radio stations as well,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and just you know, give them the opportunity to to
- 11:20Speaker 1: showcase their talent. And and and while I out is
- 11:23Speaker 1: built for that, it's built for you know, somebody may
- 11:25Speaker 1: not have a five to ten minutes set that they
- 11:27Speaker 1: can rock in an arena. It's a crazy part. I'm
- 11:30Speaker 1: watching the taping right and and my old hand going,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I can get out there. Yeah exactly. I got by
- 11:38Speaker 1: you to keep your right down, everybody got a good joke,
- 11:41Speaker 1: or you can get in there and have fun. So
- 11:44Speaker 1: I think that's the energy we want to bring across
- 11:46Speaker 1: with the tour as well. So you mentioned radio, Yes,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I gotta get you back on radio. I'm ready, I'm ready.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's funny. I I did mornings for again going. The
- 11:56Speaker 1: first time I even stepped into it was you know,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you guys gave me the opportunity when you when when
- 12:00Speaker 1: Steve would have a day office. Yeah, and I got
- 12:06Speaker 1: excited that. I was like, man, I can really do this.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And you know, a couple of years later, I had
- 12:09Speaker 1: my own morning show in New York, you know, number
- 12:11Speaker 1: one market. You know I was I was going, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 1: and it wasn't even I actually stepped in to rest
- 12:17Speaker 1: you to wrest a radio on the mainstream. That's what
- 12:21Speaker 1: I loved about you, you know, it wasn't an urban platform. Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And and to be able to do it, I think
- 12:26Speaker 1: now I'm gonna come back and actually go for people
- 12:28Speaker 1: with with some wilding out morning radio. We're gonna get
- 12:31Speaker 1: back to it. And that's important because please do that
- 12:34Speaker 1: fuch for your voices needed. If there's a there's a
- 12:37Speaker 1: big other than the breakfast club, there's no one else
- 12:39Speaker 1: doing this. You know, you have the Steves, you have
- 12:42Speaker 1: the Tom Jones, you have the Russ Paul. That's a
- 12:44Speaker 1: that's an age group that's plus fifty. Yeah, so there's
- 12:48Speaker 1: there needs to be another competitive boce to wrest a
- 12:50Speaker 1: radio and your voices needed. I love the fact that
- 12:53Speaker 1: you would never button down and say I'm an urban
- 12:56Speaker 1: bossce for the people that shows in your show Wild
- 12:59Speaker 1: and Out. Yea, please come back home man. Every time
- 13:03Speaker 1: we ace the topic, if I'm feeling, you feed me.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So I appreciate it, and that's really important that your brand. So, so,
- 13:09Speaker 1: where's the brand going now with a voice, because sometimes
- 13:11Speaker 1: you step away and you're an activist and I love
- 13:14Speaker 1: that about you. I was about to say, it's all
- 13:15Speaker 1: about the community. For me, it's about giving other people opportunities. Uh,
- 13:18Speaker 1: it's about opening doors and sharing the knowledge, wealth and
- 13:21Speaker 1: wisdom that I've obtained with everyone else. I mean, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 1: obviously I'm still in school. Hopefully you know I'll be
- 13:27Speaker 1: able to you know, h you our university. I want
- 13:30Speaker 1: to go all the way I'm getting my masters, want
- 13:32Speaker 1: to go to my doctorate and eventually be a professor.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Uh and and teach the things that I've I've picked
- 13:39Speaker 1: up along the way. But it's all about the community.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Whether it's teaching, whether it's entertaining, whether it's investing into us.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's what it's really about. You're already a professor, already
- 13:50Speaker 1: got your phdre so you will get that degree. You
- 13:53Speaker 1: may not do the whole four year run, but they
- 13:55Speaker 1: will give it to you because you're always Your experience
- 13:57Speaker 1: and your academic training in life will pay off for
- 14:00Speaker 1: a student just by sitting down and listening to you.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on the show, brother o man
- 14:04Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Hey, brother again, keep winning, keep up
- 14:09Speaker 1: living in the community. When you do that, when you
- 14:11Speaker 1: step out and do that, man, I smile even bigger
- 14:14Speaker 1: than watching you and wild and out. Appreciate it. Appreciate.
- 14:32Speaker 1: When I was an FBI agent, I was aware of
- 14:34Speaker 1: home title fraud. There was little we could do to
- 14:37Speaker 1: stop it. Now there's home title lock. This online bank
- 14:40Speaker 1: was for closing on us. They even had documents that
- 14:43Speaker 1: I signed for a home equity loan only I didn't
- 14:46Speaker 1: want a nightmare. I didn't have home title lock then,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but you bet I haven't now. Your homes title is
- 14:52Speaker 1: online where international thieves can find it. They'll forge your title,
- 14:56Speaker 1: take out loans using your equity, or sell your home outright.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Identity theft programs and insurance don't protect you for just
- 15:04Speaker 1: pennies a day. Home title products my most valuable asset,
- 15:08Speaker 1: my home. As a police officer, I've seen what home
- 15:11Speaker 1: title fraud does to victims. So I registered for home
- 15:14Speaker 1: title lock and when I did, I discovered some thief
- 15:16Speaker 1: had already taken me off my home's title. Thank god,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I've found out in time. Register now for a free

- 16:46Speaker 1: My next guess is currently a co executive producer on
- 16:49Speaker 1: bt S American Soul, premiering this January twin and eighteen
- 16:53Speaker 1: on BT. Consulting producer on BTS The Crop. I met
- 16:57Speaker 1: her as a young writer on Robert Townsen's The Parenthood.
- 17:00Speaker 1: She went on from there to become Uh is that

- 17:15Speaker 1: one and Only Sarah Finney Johnson, Good morning, Good morning,
- 17:20Speaker 1: How are you good? Energy? Then Sarah on the West Coast.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But I'm up so Sa, Yeah, what's your schedule? You
- 17:28Speaker 1: know what's you are you working on? Right now? Um?
- 17:31Speaker 1: It's the new show, another hour drama from BT from
- 17:34Speaker 1: Tracy Edmonds and Vanessa Middleton And I can't give you
- 17:37Speaker 1: the title because it's gonna change, but it is coming
- 17:41Speaker 1: to BET in the spring of Can you tell us
- 17:44Speaker 1: a little bit about the story the show? Um, it's
- 17:48Speaker 1: about three women and uh, you know, it's set in
- 17:52Speaker 1: the world of basketball for at least for a moment
- 17:56Speaker 1: it is. I'm not sure it's gonna stay there. But
- 17:59Speaker 1: one is a woman who's a housewife who's decided she
- 18:02Speaker 1: wants something more, and she's kind of gonna be forced
- 18:05Speaker 1: to need something more. Another is an up and coming journalist,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and the other is a girl who's kind of living
- 18:12Speaker 1: on the edge. You know, she wants to be in
- 18:14Speaker 1: the quote unquote bis and she'll do anything to get there.
- 18:17Speaker 1: So now, when I met you, Sarah, he was all sitcom.
- 18:22Speaker 1: So now I'll American Soul drama, the Quad drama. That's
- 18:27Speaker 1: the project you're working on. Drama. Yeah, when did you
- 18:30Speaker 1: make the decision to become the transition to drama or
- 18:34Speaker 1: just the nature of the business, you know, Rashaan, I
- 18:37Speaker 1: just believe that you've got to um transform to whatever
- 18:43Speaker 1: is working for you or that you desire. And I
- 18:46Speaker 1: felt like, I love to come. I love comedy, but
- 18:50Speaker 1: dramas were really I'd always wanted to do a drama
- 18:53Speaker 1: first of all, but I never had the opportunity because
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know, I was so blessed to keep working in
- 18:58Speaker 1: a half hour and sitcom, so dramas I mean, they
- 19:02Speaker 1: were just popping up everywhere with all you know, the
- 19:04Speaker 1: new streaming services and cable, and comedies were kind of
- 19:09Speaker 1: falling by the wayside. There weren't a lot of comedy
- 19:13Speaker 1: and so I thought, you know what, this might be
- 19:15Speaker 1: my chance to dive into drama. So I wrote a
- 19:18Speaker 1: couple of specscripts, got them to the right people. Thing God,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Felicia Henderson was one of them, and she she loved it.
- 19:26Speaker 1: She hired me on Single Ladies. I did said a
- 19:28Speaker 1: few years ago with her and that got me started.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And uh, you know, I'm not saying I would never
- 19:34Speaker 1: do comedy again, but I really do love drama. I'm
- 19:37Speaker 1: really happy here now. One of the dramas I mentioned
- 19:40Speaker 1: in your credit credits, uh with your co exact producer
- 19:43Speaker 1: on BT's American Soul. That's premiers January on VT what
- 19:48Speaker 1: exactly as American Soul. American Soul is about Soul Train
- 19:53Speaker 1: and the life of Don Fornelius. Yes, it's gonna be great.
- 19:57Speaker 1: It was a great opportunity there and his life, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 1: the man was just fascinating. And I grew up, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I'm a bad area. I grew up on Soul Train.
- 20:05Speaker 1: You know, every Saturday morning exactly. So it's just a
- 20:12Speaker 1: lot of rich story there, and and it was Devon
- 20:15Speaker 1: Gregory's the showrunner, and uh so it's it's gonna be great.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I really hope people get to watch that. Yeah, that
- 20:20Speaker 1: that's a show that I'm sure out of curiosity, you know,
- 20:24Speaker 1: we're watching because it's truly is the side of our lives.
- 20:28Speaker 1: You know, you said he's telling the truth. The soul
- 20:30Speaker 1: train line. If you could break out the soul train
- 20:33Speaker 1: line right now, and exactly, it lives on and it
- 20:36Speaker 1: doesn't matter what color, what ratio are everybody. I mean,
- 20:39Speaker 1: you can go to a wedding right now and there's
- 20:42Speaker 1: a soul Train line. So it's it's lived on, you know,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and it's it's great. At one point, you know, all
- 20:48Speaker 1: the jobs are going to reality show. You know, black
- 20:50Speaker 1: people out there fighting, throwing glasses, climbing over tables, punching
- 20:54Speaker 1: each other. And that was really frustrating for me. I'm
- 20:56Speaker 1: sure it was equally frustrating for you because you're going,
- 20:59Speaker 1: that's the real writer's job opportunity there right right. For
- 21:03Speaker 1: a while, though, I have to tell you, I didn't
- 21:04Speaker 1: think reality was gonna make it. And then one day,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I said, a reality TV is here to stay. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: it was disappointing to see some of it. You know,
- 21:13Speaker 1: but I know people have to make a living, and
- 21:15Speaker 1: you know it's legal. They're not doing anything illegal. But
- 21:18Speaker 1: I just wanted to do a different type of television.
- 21:22Speaker 1: So that with that being said, is that when you
- 21:25Speaker 1: look at television today, you know, you see it all
- 21:28Speaker 1: African Americans get these developments, I mean, real deals. So
- 21:32Speaker 1: why why you think the content is so strong? Because
- 21:35Speaker 1: we thought that was gonna happen a few years ago
- 21:37Speaker 1: when when they stepped up and said we need to
- 21:39Speaker 1: give a better image for African Americans on television. We
- 21:43Speaker 1: see that very dominantly in commercials because you see interracial
- 21:46Speaker 1: relationships and commercials like it's a normal slice of life,
- 21:50Speaker 1: which is fantastic. Television was slow to turn, but now
- 21:55Speaker 1: it seems like there's a foot race to get ahead. Yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 1: and you know, I'm so glad about it. Um it's
- 22:01Speaker 1: still I think got a ways to go as far
- 22:04Speaker 1: as people of color concerned. But my god, it has
- 22:07Speaker 1: changed so much since I started. I mean I think
- 22:11Speaker 1: they were looking, finally looking and realizing fresh voices. You know,
- 22:16Speaker 1: people with some new point of views, and they happen
- 22:19Speaker 1: to be people of color. I mean, I look at
- 22:21Speaker 1: Lena Waves and and Marbrock could kill Felicia Henderson, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 1: Gina prince Blythewood, all my sisters who are just out
- 22:28Speaker 1: here doing it, doing it big, and I'm so proud
- 22:31Speaker 1: of them. I mean, there was a time when I
- 22:33Speaker 1: first started, they were like five black writers. I do
- 22:36Speaker 1: all of them. Now I don't know half of them,
- 22:39Speaker 1: and I'm excited about that. I'm happy about that. It
- 22:42Speaker 1: makes my heart full what I know, where we've come
- 22:45Speaker 1: from to where we are now. And I think that
- 22:48Speaker 1: also because of the fact that it used to be
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know, we was on the w B, was on up.
- 22:53Speaker 1: You've used the black shows or sitcom to Launcher Network,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and if they got rid of us. I remember when
- 23:00Speaker 1: The Parkers was canceled, Uh getta boone show One on
- 23:03Speaker 1: one was canceled, Girlfriends was canceled. They just wiped us
- 23:06Speaker 1: all out. But now you know, you've got the cable
- 23:13Speaker 1: and the streaming services, and it's just so many more outlets.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And I tell a lot of young writers and any
- 23:19Speaker 1: writer you can shoot your own movie on your phone. Now,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I mean that's just unheard of when I was starting out.
- 23:25Speaker 1: So it's just come a long way. And it's still
- 23:28Speaker 1: like I said, I still think there are, of course,
- 23:29Speaker 1: many things that need to happen, but I'm seeing some
- 23:32Speaker 1: progress and that's been wonderful. Well, it's crazy when you
- 23:35Speaker 1: look at how good it is becoming you know, Insecure,
- 23:38Speaker 1: you know, Oh I love Insecure, Yes, yes, power you know.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And you know she started, uh misadventurous of an awkward
- 23:46Speaker 1: Black girl was on the internet and I would watch
- 23:49Speaker 1: it and I was like, Wow, this girl she needs
- 23:51Speaker 1: a TV show. She is so funny, so talented, and
- 23:56Speaker 1: I think Shonda Rhimes heard about her and got her
- 23:58Speaker 1: deal or worked with her a while. But then her
- 24:00Speaker 1: and Larry Wilmore got Insecure, and now Princess Penny is
- 24:04Speaker 1: over there's the showrunner, and it is just that's just remarkable.
- 24:07Speaker 1: That's the cool thing that you went from one African
- 24:09Speaker 1: American Strong to the next African American Strong to the
- 24:11Speaker 1: next offer John Ridley, it's just really you're you're absolutely
- 24:14Speaker 1: telling the truth. It used to be like you know,
- 24:17Speaker 1: you know, you know, Ken you over there just embarrass
- 24:21Speaker 1: you just got to steal a Netflix. You know, he'll
- 24:23Speaker 1: be doing big things. There's all these people came out
- 24:26Speaker 1: of that. That's Sarah Fitty World Kenya, you know Meyra
- 24:32Speaker 1: Brocker Kill, Felicia mcdonn. See. See, I gotta give her credit,
- 24:37Speaker 1: her nurturing her, her shaping a lot of people, about
- 24:40Speaker 1: telling them about story, telling them that the root of success,
- 24:43Speaker 1: long term success is knowing how to write. So you
- 24:46Speaker 1: just take some credit for for for giving us our
- 24:49Speaker 1: opportunities and giving us our strong guidance to be where
- 24:52Speaker 1: we are at today. Listen, I feel like God put
- 24:54Speaker 1: me in the right place at the right time to
- 24:56Speaker 1: do what a little bit I could. I give all
- 24:59Speaker 1: things to God. Sean, I have to tell you, without
- 25:02Speaker 1: my faith and my strength, I would not be here
- 25:05Speaker 1: where I am today. So I thank God. I think
- 25:09Speaker 1: thank God for people like you. You know, you came
- 25:11Speaker 1: into my life. You know I worked for you at
- 25:13Speaker 1: one point, and I'm grateful for that. See, I'm not
- 25:16Speaker 1: one of these people of those things. Oh, I can
- 25:18Speaker 1: only do this, do that. No, I love to work.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I love you, right, That's what Sarah loves to do.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And it's just I've had people tell me in the
- 25:26Speaker 1: last year it's like you still right, Yes, I'm still writing,
- 25:29Speaker 1: and I think that's that's great because it used to
- 25:31Speaker 1: be a cut off point. You know, you have to
- 25:33Speaker 1: stop writing what I'm saying. So yeah, and I I
- 25:35Speaker 1: just love the fact that when you and I want
- 25:38Speaker 1: to bring this back up, when you're talking about you
- 25:40Speaker 1: can shoot your shoulder. Telephone used to telephone used to
- 25:43Speaker 1: be if you were not shot your pilot or sitcom,
- 25:46Speaker 1: you wishing your money because the industry was locked down, right,
- 25:50Speaker 1: you wish you You don't come to us, You will
- 25:52Speaker 1: not get on television because you can do that in
- 25:54Speaker 1: the film ustry. You can independent production and get your
- 25:57Speaker 1: your movie in the theaters. You used to be just
- 25:59Speaker 1: saying television and work like that. Because of the streaming
- 26:03Speaker 1: services and demand for content, you can actually do your
- 26:05Speaker 1: own project and then go show up and they put
- 26:08Speaker 1: it on television. And plus production costs, I've dropped tremendously.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Mm hmmmmm. It's it's a whole new world. And I
- 26:14Speaker 1: want to say something we talked a little earlier about
- 26:17Speaker 1: my transition into writing drama. I believe as a writer,
- 26:21Speaker 1: don't get pigeonhole. You should write whatever you want. I'm
- 26:24Speaker 1: still gonna do a movie one day I might go
- 26:26Speaker 1: back to comedy. I think you should write books place
- 26:29Speaker 1: whatever it is. I say, keep writing, keep that tool fresh,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and and work on your craft. I just say, right, well,
- 26:38Speaker 1: the one thing you told me is that the Rashaan
- 26:40Speaker 1: you can keep winning. And I just love the fact
- 26:43Speaker 1: that I do. Say she's my sister. I have six
- 26:47Speaker 1: natural sisters that are two extras. Policia D. Henderson is
- 26:50Speaker 1: one of them, and Sarah Pitty Johnson is one of them.
- 26:54Speaker 1: When they I feel their pain, I feel their successes.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And to see you back out there writing and going
- 26:59Speaker 1: from another job to the next job, I'm so proud
- 27:01Speaker 1: and so happy for you. Thank you so much. I'm
- 27:04Speaker 1: just I'm just blessed and blessed to have you in
- 27:06Speaker 1: my life. I tell you it's the truth, folks, He's
- 27:09Speaker 1: the real deal, we really are. I appreciate you, sir.

- 30:17Speaker 1: can be seen sharing recipe tips on the reel, and
- 30:20Speaker 1: the other is a chef TV personality has a deal
- 30:23Speaker 1: with the Food Network and can be seen regularly cooking
- 30:26Speaker 1: on the Rachel Ratio and Home and Family. I've been
- 30:29Speaker 1: on Home and Family. I had been on Rachel Ray,
- 30:30Speaker 1: So I'm getting up there where he yet Now I'm
- 30:32Speaker 1: getting up there. I'm getting up there. But you both
- 30:35Speaker 1: could be seen on Food Networks Smallest Eats. They're on
- 30:38Speaker 1: the show discussed their new cookbook something I cooked some things,
- 30:41Speaker 1: so they hear that I cooked some things to this.
- 30:43Speaker 1: So we're gonna talk about Rashan McDonald sharing his cooking
- 30:47Speaker 1: styles with this cookbook. Name of the cookbook is The
- 30:49Speaker 1: Family Table. Recipes and Moments from a Nomadic Nomadic Life.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Banking Conversations. Jazz Smaller, Worrell and
- 30:58Speaker 1: Jake Smaller. Hey, Roshan, are you doing pretty good? Man?
- 31:04Speaker 1: What are you guys in? Now? What are you guys at? Now?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Get that eng we're talking Roushan mcdea. We three when
- 31:17Speaker 1: we when I was actually in Atlanta when they call,
- 31:21Speaker 1: when the publisher called us about doing this show, and
- 31:24Speaker 1: when I agreed to this, I was thinking at eleven
- 31:26Speaker 1: o'clock because I was in Atlanta and i've been I
- 31:32Speaker 1: realized last night, Oh no, it's eight a just man,
- 31:35Speaker 1: that's absolutely good. We're good. I'm gonna telling you something.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I'm glad I got both of you guys on the call.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I was in I live in Atlanta and I live
- 31:44Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas. And the reason. The way I found
- 31:46Speaker 1: out about your book, I was reading the Houston Chronicle
- 31:49Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas, and uh, and I was reading it.
- 31:52Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, this is such a cool book.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And then I called I have a great relationship with HarperCollins,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and I called him. I said, can I and I
- 32:00Speaker 1: get this book because I want to see this book
- 32:02Speaker 1: because I I know how to bake. People tell me
- 32:05Speaker 1: I'm an award winning baker. I'll take that title, but
- 32:07Speaker 1: I bake a lot and so, but cooking is not
- 32:10Speaker 1: something I do on a normal basis. And so when
- 32:13Speaker 1: I got the book, I will tell you it's like,
- 32:15Speaker 1: it's so many pages. I bent I like that. I
- 32:19Speaker 1: like this. I like this. I like you know what
- 32:22Speaker 1: I'm saying. I've been to page you know. I saying, hey,
- 32:23Speaker 1: I got this because I want I want to because
- 32:26Speaker 1: we have two breaks. I play no music, so I
- 32:28Speaker 1: want you. I want to really talk about the process
- 32:30Speaker 1: because you know, when you when you see a recipe,
- 32:33Speaker 1: you go, that's it, that's it, that's it. So, so
- 32:37Speaker 1: you have over a hundred and thirty recipes. How did
- 32:40Speaker 1: all this come together? How did this whole book process?
- 32:43Speaker 1: You know, it's choosing this is the right recipe here.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Before I get into my cooking experience, I want to
- 32:48Speaker 1: find out about this journey of putting this book together.
- 32:51Speaker 1: At the family table, we really went through Oh sorry,
- 32:57Speaker 1: go ahead, now you can take it dress M. So
- 33:02Speaker 1: we really went through hundreds of recipes that we wrote down,
- 33:07Speaker 1: just kind of freewriting. That's got to seeing like, Okay,
- 33:10Speaker 1: one are all the recipes we ate growing up. One
- 33:12Speaker 1: are all the things that we looked up throughout the
- 33:15Speaker 1: years in our adulthood, in our own travels and things
- 33:18Speaker 1: like that that we would always bring back to the
- 33:20Speaker 1: family table. And so we then had to edit down, Okay,
- 33:24Speaker 1: what's worth being in the book. We can't have everything
- 33:27Speaker 1: in there. Um, it's supposed to be hundred twenty five
- 33:30Speaker 1: recipes that we were obligated to put it in. You
- 33:33Speaker 1: know that the publisher expected us to do recipes and
- 33:39Speaker 1: we did one thirty so we did five bonus recipes
- 33:41Speaker 1: for yall. So so really, uh, it was just about
- 33:48Speaker 1: narrowing those down. Um. And the way we did it
- 33:52Speaker 1: um was, you know, after we did the cooking show,
- 33:56Speaker 1: we were like, well, let's do a book. I I
- 34:00Speaker 1: love books in general, books it's a beaut Oh, thank you.
- 34:07Speaker 1: And I've always wanted to you know, uh write and things,
- 34:12Speaker 1: you know, write books and things like that. And so
- 34:14Speaker 1: what we did is we just when we started talking
- 34:18Speaker 1: about it, we were excited about putting down our family
- 34:21Speaker 1: legacy through food, um, for next generations and also just
- 34:25Speaker 1: to share with people now are passions for food on
- 34:30Speaker 1: a different level. UM. And so when we decided to
- 34:34Speaker 1: do it, and then we now down the recipes when
- 34:37Speaker 1: we're really I was like in charge of um project,
- 34:41Speaker 1: managing you know, the book, getting it together and all
- 34:46Speaker 1: that type of stuff. But and that's just because I
- 34:49Speaker 1: have a background and being bossy, and that's why he's
- 34:55Speaker 1: quiet now. That's why he's quiet now, Jacks, Well, really
- 35:01Speaker 1: I'm a producer. That's kind of my day job. I
- 35:04Speaker 1: can use behind the scenes content on films and um
- 35:07Speaker 1: that's why I was in Atlanta by the way. But anyway,
- 35:11Speaker 1: so with that, we then decided that recipe wise, as
- 35:16Speaker 1: far as like I was gonna give the torch to Jake,
- 35:20Speaker 1: as far as he would decide what's going to make it,
- 35:23Speaker 1: what's not going to make it, and had to be
- 35:25Speaker 1: in charge of that part of it. And then I
- 35:27Speaker 1: would be in charge of getting everything together and also
- 35:32Speaker 1: um uh a lot of the writing, like I wanted
- 35:35Speaker 1: to write so so so Jake, so you you you
- 35:39Speaker 1: were the man behind the grill lobster roles. Yeah, okay,
- 35:45Speaker 1: so this would happened to me, just what happened to me,
- 35:46Speaker 1: because I'm just let everybody know how it real I am.
- 35:49Speaker 1: I used to just let people come on my show
- 35:52Speaker 1: and they have a book by cooking, I just bring
- 35:55Speaker 1: them on. We talk. So now what I do is
- 35:58Speaker 1: like I said, I found you guys book reading the
- 36:00Speaker 1: Houston Chronicle called Harpercollin sit the book and then I
- 36:04Speaker 1: went through it. I went, this is awesome. So I
- 36:07Speaker 1: make things that I make. If I can make it,
- 36:09Speaker 1: I go, I'm bring them on the show so we
- 36:11Speaker 1: can talk about it. And so so this morning I
- 36:14Speaker 1: just blue and I posted it on my social media.
- 36:16Speaker 1: I made the grill lobster rolls. Yesterday morning, I made
- 36:21Speaker 1: the grill And let's tell you someomel this is. This
- 36:23Speaker 1: was see you go to a major restaurant and you
- 36:27Speaker 1: you you ordered this because by five because lobs is
- 36:30Speaker 1: not cheap depending on where you at. And so I
- 36:32Speaker 1: had never in my life considered that was an option
- 36:35Speaker 1: for me to make in my house. Grilled lobster roll. Okay,
- 36:39Speaker 1: so so check this out. This the just the recipe here,
- 36:42Speaker 1: four table spoons of salted butter because I baked, so
- 36:44Speaker 1: I used unsalted butter. So I had to go give
- 36:46Speaker 1: me some salted butter. Six garlic clothes and then they
- 36:49Speaker 1: had the red peppers already had that. Because I'm a
- 36:52Speaker 1: pizza guy, I had to crush red peppers. And then
- 36:54Speaker 1: a pitch of sea salt that has become my favorite
- 36:57Speaker 1: sea salt. I wasn't a come back. I've come from
- 36:59Speaker 1: the neighborhood, so I regular more than salt was my thing.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But see salts of things to do now, Lemon had
- 37:04Speaker 1: that already in there, come out make all the time.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And then four lobster tails, about five, about five of them,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and they were like they're like by almost a little
- 37:13Speaker 1: bit less by forty almost a little bit less than
- 37:15Speaker 1: a half pounds. So I was I was grinding, and
- 37:18Speaker 1: then I got back say I knew it I was fat.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So instead of giving me hot dog bones, I got
- 37:22Speaker 1: me some hoogy rolls because I was gonna feel this
- 37:25Speaker 1: bad boy with some meat. And then uh chopped me
- 37:28Speaker 1: up some parsley. So I wasn't gonna grill, okay, So
- 37:31Speaker 1: I went and got my George form and grill out
- 37:33Speaker 1: of the clods and that big white one. You know
- 37:34Speaker 1: what I'm saying, that big white Come on, man, I
- 37:40Speaker 1: dipped that bad boy, cut that bad boy open there,
- 37:43Speaker 1: took that shell off that lobster tail. Then then you
- 37:47Speaker 1: mix all that stuff up. You mixed it the garlic,
- 37:49Speaker 1: the butter, and to see something. You mix all that
- 37:52Speaker 1: up and it all right. And know, all of a sudden,
- 37:54Speaker 1: you take that lemon, you squeeze that lemon on top
- 37:56Speaker 1: of the lobster, and you slapped both of them bad
- 37:58Speaker 1: boys on off of that. Come on, I'm telling you, man,
- 38:03Speaker 1: you keep the little opening. I keep that little open
- 38:05Speaker 1: because you don't want to burn it too quick, because
- 38:07Speaker 1: you want that bad boy to turn a little white.
- 38:09Speaker 1: And I flipped it, put more limit on it, and
- 38:11Speaker 1: then I took that bad boy. Dip that bad boy
- 38:13Speaker 1: and that little garlic butter sauce put it right back
- 38:17Speaker 1: on that grill. I'm telling your game. I'm telling you
- 38:22Speaker 1: the smell that's you know what they're talking about when
- 38:24Speaker 1: it comes to grill, the rolls, the truth, the truth,
- 38:30Speaker 1: because your boy got down. Did I put a little
- 38:32Speaker 1: that butter sauce on the inside of that, and I
- 38:35Speaker 1: threw a little extrap A little man is in it?
- 38:37Speaker 1: Too little contre. I'm catre tell. I killed it, y'all.
- 38:43Speaker 1: I killed it when I started talking about you, when
- 38:45Speaker 1: you really made that, because you didn't. Because man, I'm
- 38:47Speaker 1: gonna tell you something. I'm gonna tell you what. This
- 38:49Speaker 1: is my birth for my staff today. Going down the
- 38:52Speaker 1: list of that over, just's what I made for my
- 38:57Speaker 1: staff today. I made the crawfish dip. Okay, I made
- 39:01Speaker 1: that crawfish jip. Huh. Yeah. I made it for my staff,
- 39:06Speaker 1: but it made some other things for him. But let's
- 39:09Speaker 1: talk about this, this this dip that I made because
- 39:12Speaker 1: the thing that reason I'm talking to people like this
- 39:14Speaker 1: is that when you get a cookbook and it's so simple,
- 39:18Speaker 1: when I tell you it's simple, And I made these
- 39:21Speaker 1: dishes yesterday, okay, and for for dinner this afternoon, I'm
- 39:25Speaker 1: going to make my staff the grill sauce Peter pocket. Uh. See.
- 39:32Speaker 1: See that's a that's a simple recipes because they are
- 39:35Speaker 1: the actual recipes we go up eating in a real thing.
- 39:39Speaker 1: So it's not there's no frills placed on any of
- 39:43Speaker 1: the recipes. It's all direct for real people, real food,
- 39:47Speaker 1: real families. Um. And that was really the fun part
- 39:52Speaker 1: about you know, doing the book is it was a
- 39:54Speaker 1: two year process. And Jazz and I can both attest
- 39:57Speaker 1: to the fact that no one told us how much
- 40:00Speaker 1: work goes into throwing a cookbook. You have to cook
- 40:03Speaker 1: minimally four times we cook ease recipe just to get
- 40:07Speaker 1: the recipe tight and concise and everything. Um. So it
- 40:12Speaker 1: was everyone's used to cooking to take but you know
- 40:16Speaker 1: our families, uh, you know, Mom, Grandma, whoever, everybody is
- 40:21Speaker 1: always like, oh put you know, you could slid in
- 40:23Speaker 1: and you don't really put my recipe. You just put
- 40:27Speaker 1: yourself and you kind of you kind of know how
- 40:29Speaker 1: much you're supposed to put. And then you have the
- 40:31Speaker 1: tea things and all your stuff, you know, but you're
- 40:33Speaker 1: not measuring it out. So for us, the topses of
- 40:37Speaker 1: like measuring it out and laying down what you can't
- 40:42Speaker 1: put in the cookbook season to taste or right you know.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Um now I'm telling sweet depart because that's me. See,
- 40:52Speaker 1: I get my dessert before I ordered my meal. When
- 40:54Speaker 1: I go and restaurant, and so the cooking up macaroons,
- 41:00Speaker 1: you had me there, you hand me their jazz, the
- 41:02Speaker 1: coponut macca that was out the influence of our dad
- 41:09Speaker 1: is uh uh from New York. He's Polish Jewish, so
- 41:14Speaker 1: um mac those macaroons are really popular and they like
- 41:18Speaker 1: a man of chevits. So it's a brand as usually
- 41:21Speaker 1: selling them around. Whenever you see them in the supermarkets,
- 41:25Speaker 1: it's usually around like path Over or um Hanaker or
- 41:29Speaker 1: the Jewish holidays and things like that. Um so that
- 41:33Speaker 1: was a take on those but um uh, they're really good.
- 41:38Speaker 1: And then the ice team like the homemade ice cream.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You know Mom used to make that. Nay, they know
- 41:46Speaker 1: they got a real foodie on the phone. Not then
- 41:49Speaker 1: woke up on the West Coast. I'm gonna let y'all know, man,
- 41:52Speaker 1: I'm a fan Jack and I just wanted y'all on
- 41:55Speaker 1: the phone to let y'all know that you know, here's
- 41:58Speaker 1: a guy Rashaan mcdonn never had them in your life.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I'm a fan. I read your book. First of all,
- 42:04Speaker 1: the newspaper article made me, gave me interests. And then
- 42:08Speaker 1: and I just want to put the word out because
- 42:10Speaker 1: a lot of people do these books, you know, lifestyle
- 42:13Speaker 1: you your family has been famous for a long time.
- 42:16Speaker 1: But what my takeaway from this book was that you
- 42:19Speaker 1: guys are just everyday people, and I really appreciated that. Yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 1: family is number one and food is second. You hit
- 42:34Speaker 1: me talking. I come from a family too. I come
- 42:36Speaker 1: from six sisters and I have two brothers. So we
- 42:39Speaker 1: we thought it so we know about that that family
- 42:41Speaker 1: table thing now. But they came cook six sisters and
- 42:45Speaker 1: three brothers. Two six sisters and two brothers, so it's
- 42:48Speaker 1: nine kids and two parents. So so I know about
- 42:51Speaker 1: that big table experience though. But we couldn't cook like y'all.
- 42:55Speaker 1: So when mom went in there cooking and she said
- 42:58Speaker 1: food up, we ran. Now, I wouldn't everybody know about
- 43:06Speaker 1: this book? Like I said, I didn't want to like
- 43:09Speaker 1: just act like there was a limited menu here. But
- 43:11Speaker 1: they have a tremendous amount that's all broken up in chapters.
- 43:14Speaker 1: We talked about the Sunday Susters. They haven't even have
- 43:16Speaker 1: pasta night chapter, which I think is great because I'm
- 43:19Speaker 1: into that now too. I got my cabinet, so I'll
- 43:21Speaker 1: be diving into that. You saw me rave about the
- 43:24Speaker 1: Great Outdoors chapter that's the you know that where I made.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I'm for dinner. I'm having the grill sausage Peter Pocket,
- 43:30Speaker 1: and I made the grie up lost the world. I'm
- 43:32Speaker 1: telling you people very easy to make. You know their
- 43:35Speaker 1: moms from New Orleans. New Orleans Roots as a chapter.
- 43:38Speaker 1: They have salads if you like salad, specialty salads. You know,
- 43:42Speaker 1: best side dishes. You know college greens. You know that's
- 43:45Speaker 1: the best side dish for anybody. Those college greens are good. See.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I'd like to see see all you all you have
- 43:54Speaker 1: to do and give with people and let them know
- 43:55Speaker 1: that you love them. That wake up, that climb up
- 43:57Speaker 1: out of bed, get that sleep out there, and let
- 44:01Speaker 1: everybody know this is a winner. I like this chapter
- 44:03Speaker 1: about party fits and snacks. It really, it's really when
- 44:07Speaker 1: I look at this book and I look at the pictures,
- 44:09Speaker 1: I look at the life and everything, and I just
- 44:12Speaker 1: want to I want to congratulate you guys. I really
- 44:14Speaker 1: want to congratulate you guys, because I'm a fan. If
- 44:19Speaker 1: you know, give my number, if you ever come out
- 44:22Speaker 1: to Atlanta, come by my house and and then we'll cook.
- 44:25Speaker 1: You know, we're cooking, eating talking chad. But no you
- 44:28Speaker 1: have a home in Atlanta because I come from a
- 44:31Speaker 1: big family. You guys are a big family just like mine,

- 44:37Speaker 1: and just keep keep doing what you're doing. Keep winning
- 44:39Speaker 1: at the dinner table. Okay, thank you. We will definitely
- 44:45Speaker 1: do a cookout next time when in a land that

- 48:16Speaker 1: include the movies, so I want everybody to I don't
- 48:18Speaker 1: want everybody just to think you just a TV star.
- 48:20Speaker 1: You know, I was listening to you. I was like,
- 48:23Speaker 1: who they talking about you? That you're behind? That's what
- 48:27Speaker 1: I'm talking about you. And it's really incredible, man, when
- 48:30Speaker 1: I when I think about as many times over the years,
- 48:33Speaker 1: I've actually just settling, you know, still on the side
- 48:35Speaker 1: of the stage and just watch you perform at various shows.
- 48:39Speaker 1: And you know, like on Steve Harper Show, you was
- 48:41Speaker 1: almost a regular on that show because you was casting
- 48:43Speaker 1: a lot of times. Remember you, You're right, And it
- 48:48Speaker 1: was really funny because you know. I remember the classic
- 48:51Speaker 1: dance was the Dance Off, the Big Dance Off. Do
- 48:54Speaker 1: you remember that the Big Dance Off with you eod
- 48:58Speaker 1: true man? It really that was the that was the
- 49:01Speaker 1: real That was the episode where you know when these
- 49:04Speaker 1: characters and Steve character really almost had a romantic moment
- 49:08Speaker 1: because of the fact that his character came in and
- 49:11Speaker 1: and and check ste emotionally. That's what I like from
- 49:14Speaker 1: remember that this man has a career. So and all
- 49:17Speaker 1: that stuff I mentioned I mentioned, I mentioned you'd been
- 49:20Speaker 1: on Sister Sister and all these shows, Moisha and all
- 49:23Speaker 1: these shows. What what what? What? You know? I know
- 49:26Speaker 1: what I liked about you. But the worst thing about
- 49:28Speaker 1: knowing somebody You start talking and people don't get to
- 49:30Speaker 1: experience the true value who you are? What did? What
- 49:34Speaker 1: did most people? You know? You ever saying when you're casting,
- 49:36Speaker 1: because you was a you're a chamellion. You know you
- 49:38Speaker 1: could do it. You could be dropped, tramatic. You're a
- 49:40Speaker 1: very physical actor, very animated in the phase. You could
- 49:44Speaker 1: be up, you could be down. I'm talking about with volume.
- 49:47Speaker 1: And you know, because you can play against a big character.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Because when he did the Parkers playing against Monique Monique
- 49:52Speaker 1: was a big character, you know, where he had to
- 49:54Speaker 1: go against the grain, like he was a person that
- 49:57Speaker 1: was a really hard character to play because of the
- 49:59Speaker 1: fact that he had to act like he was disgusted
- 50:02Speaker 1: with his character. I would never date a character like you,
- 50:05Speaker 1: and that's a hard that's a hard thing to do,
- 50:08Speaker 1: especially when you write that character and also you working
- 50:12Speaker 1: day to day with that character, so it doesn't cross
- 50:14Speaker 1: that line. That was really interesting time for you. Correct, Oh,
- 50:18Speaker 1: thank god. I had the best time. It was uh
- 50:22Speaker 1: six years of playing with my best friend and I
- 50:26Speaker 1: got a paycheck for it. You know, you can't better
- 50:29Speaker 1: than that. You know, we had a great time. We
- 50:32Speaker 1: did a hundred and ten episodes or something like that. Um,
- 50:36Speaker 1: you know, it was great and nobody knew, you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: the magnitude of how big that show was gonna be. Well,
- 50:42Speaker 1: you know, I like that when I came out and
- 50:44Speaker 1: came over to that show from the Jamie Foxx Show.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And I like the reason I came over to the
- 50:48Speaker 1: show because it was it was one of the first
- 50:50Speaker 1: shows on televison, especially African American shows, because at that time,
- 50:54Speaker 1: if you were on TV and you was overweight, you know,
- 50:57Speaker 1: he was either made or use something you always took
- 51:00Speaker 1: care of, right as you always took care of somebody
- 51:04Speaker 1: when you will overweight on television. And it was the
- 51:07Speaker 1: first show you don't tell the truth? You know, This
- 51:10Speaker 1: was the first show where overweight black women say, I
- 51:14Speaker 1: look good, I'm gonna dress up, I construct my stuff
- 51:18Speaker 1: and I can get the man of my dream. You right,
- 51:25Speaker 1: But that was the first time. That was the first
- 51:27Speaker 1: time right here, absolutely absolutely absolutely we don't nick mcgirl,
- 51:33Speaker 1: you know if she gonna do me. But I was
- 51:34Speaker 1: just telling the truth. But that was the that was
- 51:35Speaker 1: the best why I came over, you know, That's where
- 51:38Speaker 1: I came over to the series because I've never seen
- 51:41Speaker 1: that on television. And you know, it's brilliantly done by
- 51:44Speaker 1: Sarah Fanny and uh who the co creator along with
- 51:48Speaker 1: or Vita Spears. They co created the show and developed
- 51:51Speaker 1: the show, also created Mosha. It's just a legacy of
- 51:54Speaker 1: talent that just keeps sliding, slide sliding. But when they
- 51:57Speaker 1: invited me to come over the show, that's why I
- 51:59Speaker 1: was a tracked you to the show because I just
- 52:01Speaker 1: left Jamie Fox Show and it was about an African
- 52:04Speaker 1: American mayle who found himself and it wasn't silly. And
- 52:07Speaker 1: I saw this character over here, I went, Wow, overweight
- 52:10Speaker 1: women on television African American. They're feeling good about themselves,
- 52:14Speaker 1: They're looking good about themselves. They're sexy. I want to
- 52:17Speaker 1: do that show, Maam. I was on the show for
- 52:19Speaker 1: two years. Happy getting the check like you said, get
- 52:22Speaker 1: the check? Ye, none of that. So you know you
- 52:26Speaker 1: like we talked earlier about you know, you're you're trained actor.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Do you do you teaching the classes? Do you do
- 52:33Speaker 1: any master classes? Uh? You know I just did actually
- 52:38Speaker 1: uh in New York two weeks ago. Um and it
- 52:42Speaker 1: was a group of college students. Um. But yeah, and
- 52:47Speaker 1: and by teaching, man, I don't try to drill. And
- 52:52Speaker 1: it's not a method that I formulate. But I can
- 52:58Speaker 1: only talk about my experience and what works for me.
- 53:02Speaker 1: How I go about breaking down a script, um, you know,
- 53:06Speaker 1: my character development, Um, how you go into an audition
- 53:11Speaker 1: and you've got to be prepared and stuff like that
- 53:15Speaker 1: from my experience. So you know, nothing is from a
- 53:19Speaker 1: book with the if. It's everything that I've learned along
- 53:23Speaker 1: the way. Now that so do mer favor next time
- 53:28Speaker 1: you have one of those classes that I Rushan knew
- 53:31Speaker 1: nothing about allow me to promote it for you're not
- 53:34Speaker 1: saying that you have, but Rushan McDonald that's why I

- 53:48Speaker 1: let me know so I could promote it for because
- 53:50Speaker 1: you guys are special talents. But not only that, young
- 53:53Speaker 1: young actors and at even veteran actors need to hear
- 53:56Speaker 1: your story so they know that there's a journey. Like
- 53:59Speaker 1: you said, get down the script going in for all
- 54:01Speaker 1: this year walking up against and you see fifty people
- 54:04Speaker 1: in there. They don't even look like you, and some
- 54:05Speaker 1: of them do look like you. How do you deal
- 54:07Speaker 1: with that emotion? How do you win? And you've been
- 54:10Speaker 1: winning for such a long time. Man, uh, I just
- 54:12Speaker 1: wanted to have you on the show. The Telly and
- 54:15Speaker 1: the beauty of you know, helping somebody out else out
- 54:18Speaker 1: that's just starting out. It's all in your experience and
- 54:22Speaker 1: simple things that we take for granted in the business
- 54:26Speaker 1: that you know, a lot of newcomers don't know, so
- 54:30Speaker 1: you know I love to pass that information on. Well,
- 54:33Speaker 1: you've been doing it door and again. UH starring in
