- 0:00Luke chapter 24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn,
- 0:04they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had
- 0:06prepared, and they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
- 0:09But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord
- 0:12Jesus. While they were perplexed about
- 0:14this, behold, 2 men suddenly stood near them in dazzling
- 0:17clothing. And as the women were terrified
- 0:19and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them,
- 0:22Why do you seek the living One among the dead?
- 0:25He is not here, but He is risen. Remember how He spoke to you
- 0:28while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must
- 0:31be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified.
- 0:35And the third day rise again. And they remembered His words,
- 0:38and returned from the tomb, and reported all these things to the
- 0:4111 and to all the rest. Now they were Mary Magdalene and
- 0:44Joanna, and Mary the mother of James.
- 0:47Also. The other women with them were
- 0:48telling these things to the apostles, but these words
- 0:51appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.
- 0:54But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, stooping and looking in.
- 0:57He saw the linen wrappings only. And he went away to his home,
- 1:00marvelling at what had happened. And behold, 2 of them were going
- 1:03that very day to a village called Emmaus, which was about 7
- 1:07miles from Jerusalem. And they were talking with each
- 1:10other about all these things which had taken place.
- 1:12While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself
- 1:15approached and began travelling with them.
- 1:17But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
- 1:20And he said to them, What are these words that you are
- 1:22exchanging with one another as you are walking?
- 1:25And they stood still, looking sad.
- 1:27One of them named Cleopas answered and said to him, Are
- 1:30you the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the
- 1:32things which have happened here in these days?
- 1:35And he said to them, What things?
- 1:37And they said to him the things about Jesus the Nazarene, who
- 1:40was a prophet, mighty in deed and word, in the sight of God
- 1:43and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers
- 1:46delivered him to the sentence of death and crucified him.
- 1:49But we were hoping that it was he who was going to redeem
- 1:51Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is
- 1:54the third day since these things happened.
- 1:57But also some women among us amazed us.
- 2:00When they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find
- 2:02His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of
- 2:05angels who said that He was alive.
- 2:08Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it,
- 2:10just exactly as the women also had said.
- 2:13But Him they did not see. And He said to them, O foolish
- 2:16men, and slow of heart, to believe in all that the prophets
- 2:19have spoken. Was it not necessary for the
- 2:21Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?
- 2:25Then beginning with Moses, with all the prophets, he explained
- 2:27to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
- 2:31And they approached the village where they were going, and he
- 2:33acted as though he were going farther.
- 2:35But they urged him, saying, Stay with us, for it is getting
- 2:37toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.
- 2:39So he went in to stay with them. When he had reclined at the
- 2:42table with them, he took the bread and blessed it, and
- 2:45breaking it, he began giving it to them.
- 2:47Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he
- 2:49vanished from their sight. They said to one another, were
- 2:53not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking to us on
- 2:55the road while he was explaining the Scriptures to us and they
- 2:59got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem and found
- 3:01gathered together the 11 and those who were with him, saying,
- 3:05the Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon began to
- 3:08relate their experiences on the road and how they how he was
- 3:11recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
- 3:14While they were telling these things, he himself stood in
- 3:16their midst and said to them, peace be to you.
- 3:19But they were startled and frightened, and thought that
- 3:21they were seeing a spirit. And he said to them, Why are you
- 3:23troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
- 3:26See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
- 3:30Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as
- 3:33you see it that I have. When he had said this, he showed
- 3:36them his hands and his feet, while they still could not
- 3:39believe it, because of their joy and amazement.
- 3:41He said to them, Have you anything here to eat?
- 3:44They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it
- 3:47before them. Now He said to them, These are
- 3:49my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that
- 3:53all things which are written about me in the law of Moses and
- 3:56the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.
- 3:59Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and
- 4:01He said to them, Thus it is written that the Christ would
- 4:04suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that
- 4:07repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His
- 4:10name to all the nations beginning from Jerusalem.
- 4:13You are witnesses of these things, and behold, I am sending
- 4:16forth the promise of my Father upon you.
- 4:18But you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power
- 4:21from on high. And he led them out as far as
- 4:24Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
- 4:27While he was blessing them, he parted from them and was carried
- 4:29up into heaven. And they, after worshipping him,
- 4:32returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the
- 4:35temple praising God.
