- 1:30Speaker 1: time ago. I'm a I'm a big fan of here,
- 1:33Speaker 1: well everybody broken to show him, A big fan of
- 1:35Speaker 1: their based on their their strength, based on the area,
- 1:38Speaker 1: but truly a big fan of his UH and entertainment
- 1:41Speaker 1: UH information business. He's he's a he's the four one
- 1:44Speaker 1: one guy you won't to know about entertaining what's going on.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He's the four one one. He's the TMZ type guy.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You know, he gets that type of information. My next
- 1:52Speaker 1: gust is a Washington, d C. Based American TV commentator,
- 1:56Speaker 1: pop culture expert, media personality and social media influenza, best
- 2:01Speaker 1: known for hosting TV shows like on the Travel Channel
- 2:04Speaker 1: and NFL Network, as well as appearing on cable news
- 2:07Speaker 1: channels like CNN, h L, n MSNBC. Evert Magazine named
- 2:12Speaker 1: him as one of the thirty on the Rise to
- 2:14Speaker 1: Watch in the industry, and the nuble a CP recognized
- 2:17Speaker 1: him as one of the forty power Players under forty.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations for the first time
- 2:23Speaker 1: TV host and pop culture expert John Murray sud Good morning.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I'm feeling good, my friends. I'm feeling really really good. Brother,
- 2:34Speaker 1: long time, long time. We've talked a lot. We know
- 2:38Speaker 1: a lot of people. One of our good friends, uh
- 2:40Speaker 1: uh out there that we always cross lanes. And so
- 2:45Speaker 1: how are you doing right now in your life? And
- 2:46Speaker 1: where you where are you calling me from? Man, I'm
- 2:49Speaker 1: home in Watchington, d C. And I got really nervous
- 2:52Speaker 1: last night because I'm a huge w w E fan,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and so last night was on Super Bowl. They had
- 2:57Speaker 1: their WrestleMania pay per view and so we have Uh
- 3:02Speaker 1: the w w E Championship was won by a black man,
- 3:06Speaker 1: which is the first time in the business. You know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: the rock also hosted the championship at one point, but
- 3:12Speaker 1: the company celebrated his some moing side of his heritage,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and they didn't they didn't present him as a black man.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So this is the first time that a real brother
- 3:22Speaker 1: who identifies as a brother, who's gad position as a brother,
- 3:25Speaker 1: was the belt. And I was whooping and hollerand so much.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I gotta do a radio interview
- 3:30Speaker 1: in the morning. I might need to pull them back
- 3:31Speaker 1: a little bit. So, Um, it's been a good weekend man.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I've been excited to talk to you. Um, and it's
- 3:37Speaker 1: been an amazing start to two Times of the ninety Man.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So many things going on. Okay, we can't forget now
- 3:43Speaker 1: Becky lynch Now I'm excited for Becky. Liz. Let me
- 3:48Speaker 1: find out you down. We have to go to a
- 3:51Speaker 1: match together. Um. But yeah, I was excited about Becky
- 3:56Speaker 1: lynch Man. But listen, Kofi kings Man, who won the
- 3:59Speaker 1: belt last night as a friend of mine, and you know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: his journey has really inspired me because you know, the
- 4:05Speaker 1: TV component of my career has been my has been
- 4:08Speaker 1: my face. Two is in my act too. You know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I started as an entertainment writer, which put me into radio,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and the radio and writing was an amazing blessing for me.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I did a syndicated morning show for six years. I
- 4:22Speaker 1: was at the number one African American website for seven years.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I literally got to see the world or somebody else's dime,
- 4:30Speaker 1: make amazing relationships, do bucket list experiences, and make money
- 4:34Speaker 1: while doing it. But at the end of the day,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I went through a phase about maybe five or six
- 4:39Speaker 1: years ago where I really started to feel burned out
- 4:43Speaker 1: and I was unfulfilled because you know, that was my
- 4:47Speaker 1: Plan B, and my Plan B was an amazing blessing,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but it was really distracting me from my Plan A,
- 4:52Speaker 1: which was television. I got into this business because I
- 4:55Speaker 1: saw guys like Tom bergeron and Regis filming and our
- 5:00Speaker 1: Ceneo Hall, and I wanted to be in the hosting space.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I wanted to do daytime talk. I wanted to do
- 5:05Speaker 1: specialty TV on Cakeboy and so UM. I needed to
- 5:09Speaker 1: work back towards that. So watching my friend Kofy, who
- 5:12Speaker 1: I had just had dinner with him maybe about five
- 5:15Speaker 1: years ago, when he was at a very low point
- 5:17Speaker 1: in his career, he was frustrated the company wasn't really
- 5:20Speaker 1: doing anything with him. They hadn't launched this at new
- 5:24Speaker 1: uh tag team that he was a part of called
- 5:26Speaker 1: the New Day, and he just was trying to figure
- 5:29Speaker 1: out where the journey went from there. And so to
- 5:31Speaker 1: see where he was then and him even thinking about,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know, hanging up his trunk and using his marketing
- 5:38Speaker 1: degree somewhere else, and to watch him win this championship
- 5:42Speaker 1: last night, it was just great encouragement for a guy
- 5:45Speaker 1: like me who's hustling in the phase two of his
- 5:48Speaker 1: career to say, sometimes if you just keep doing the
- 5:51Speaker 1: work and stay on the journey, all the elements of
- 5:53Speaker 1: line up just the way that's supposed to. It's really
- 5:56Speaker 1: true because first of all, you have to give me
- 5:57Speaker 1: prop because I'll come station wasn't uh predetermined, pre pre prerecorded.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You started talking about w W E and I slieve
- 6:07Speaker 1: right on the end with the information. Now you gotta see,
- 6:10Speaker 1: see what you gotta do is give me some love
- 6:11Speaker 1: or not. I kinda give you the love for that.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You know, the Irish one woman, you know what I'm
- 6:16Speaker 1: saying that she's a beast. Now he's a thing about him.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I met him like like obsolutely. That's two years ago
- 6:23Speaker 1: when he was still like still out there kind of
- 6:25Speaker 1: struggling in the w W. They were just getting the
- 6:29Speaker 1: rhythm of his tag team going. Listen, when they first
- 6:32Speaker 1: put his tag too together the New Day him Xavier
- 6:35Speaker 1: Wood and Biggie, the fans used to boot him the
- 6:41Speaker 1: cortinestest um copiest team you've ever seen, and the fans
- 6:47Speaker 1: hated it. But they took ownership of that and they
- 6:51Speaker 1: rewrote the narrative of what w W was trying to present,
- 6:54Speaker 1: what that New Day, and then they went for a
- 6:56Speaker 1: bigger team that was getting boomed to selling more merchanda
- 7:00Speaker 1: at one point then John Cena something that people said
- 7:03Speaker 1: was unthinkable and unattainable. And in the professional wrestling business historically,
- 7:09Speaker 1: black wrestlers have not fared the same way as that
- 7:12Speaker 1: white counterparts. And one of the main reasons is the
- 7:15Speaker 1: promoters never thought that black wrestlers could sell much about
- 7:19Speaker 1: his action figures, T shirts and all the other things
- 7:23Speaker 1: that helped push you to superstar who. But these guys
- 7:26Speaker 1: have defied all the odds. They have broken the glass
- 7:30Speaker 1: ceiling for brothers and professionals, and last night, man we
- 7:33Speaker 1: all rejoiced, Hey man, We're gonna be right back with him.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You know this is not you're regular now, brother, You're
- 7:39Speaker 1: regular now show. We've been back with mar my man
- 7:42Speaker 1: John Murray on moneymaking conversations. How you don't have This
- 7:47Speaker 1: is Roshan McDonald and you're listening to money making conversation.
- 7:50Speaker 1: My show has been taken to a new level. You know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I've always promoted entertainment and entrepreneurship. Well, when you bring
- 7:56Speaker 1: an entertainment expert on your show like I have on
- 7:59Speaker 1: the show, a TV host and pop culture expert like
- 8:02Speaker 1: I have on the show. Now, please welcome back to
- 8:04Speaker 1: the show. Mr Murray. How you doing, sir man. It's
- 8:07Speaker 1: a good listen. I'm hanging out with a real expert,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, because let's let's patch you on the back
- 8:13Speaker 1: of shor. You know, you launched some entertainment careers that
- 8:17Speaker 1: have made people multip millionaires, and so for that we
- 8:21Speaker 1: got to celebrate you for being an entertainment expert in
- 8:24Speaker 1: your own right. My brother, I appreciate that. Now, thank
- 8:26Speaker 1: you for that compliment. And that's why you know you
- 8:29Speaker 1: were talking about finding your voice and and I when
- 8:32Speaker 1: I stop manager Steve Harvey, I had to find my voice.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And sometimes you have to and when I say that
- 8:37Speaker 1: success and anything when you're changing the career. You can
- 8:40Speaker 1: work at IBM, or you can be working at Apple,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you can be working at Bank for America, and you
- 8:45Speaker 1: make a career change. When you make a career change,
- 8:48Speaker 1: you know, there's always a transition period in finding your voice,
- 8:52Speaker 1: especially when you go exactly to what you was doing previously.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Like if you was a baker, now you're a programmer,
- 8:58Speaker 1: there's going to be a transition theory of you feeling
- 9:00Speaker 1: comfortable and showing authority and showing a level of confidence
- 9:04Speaker 1: in those positions. When you look at the world's out there, now,
- 9:09Speaker 1: what do you see? The most? I know social media
- 9:11Speaker 1: has been the most tremendous change in entertainment. Would you
- 9:14Speaker 1: agree with that? Absolutely? Man, It's been a tremendous change,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and it's in both a gifting the curse. I mean,
- 9:21Speaker 1: we've seen social media calls horrible problem for some people
- 9:26Speaker 1: in entertainment and in business and in politics. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 1: who would have ever thought that, uh, Twitter would go
- 9:33Speaker 1: on the official presidential records? Um, you know, things that
- 9:37Speaker 1: was happening in this country. But for for someone like me,
- 9:43Speaker 1: you know, um, when I walked away from my digital
- 9:46Speaker 1: gig when I walked away from the morning show that
- 9:48Speaker 1: I was doing, UM and decided, I need to figure
- 9:52Speaker 1: out what my next is. I went through a season
- 9:55Speaker 1: where I was living off my savings because I had
- 9:59Speaker 1: become friendly and was hosting events and stuff and UM
- 10:04Speaker 1: and and doing things like that while on the radio.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Some of that kept me to stay. But the growth
- 10:11Speaker 1: of social media and being able to use that to
- 10:15Speaker 1: supplement my income, uh in various capacities were the thing
- 10:20Speaker 1: that kept me from having to go move into a
- 10:22Speaker 1: homeless shelter while I was only trying to get this
- 10:24Speaker 1: TV work, man. And so social media has been a
- 10:27Speaker 1: significant blessing and an asset uh in my professional endeavors.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And I mean, and then on the entertaining side of it, Man,
- 10:36Speaker 1: it's just really cool to have this international connection with
- 10:40Speaker 1: people who think highly of your work, right, And that's
- 10:43Speaker 1: what I want to congratulate you. You have a Wikipedia
- 10:47Speaker 1: page that is a that is a that's a phenomenal
- 10:50Speaker 1: testament of your work to be recognized in an international platform.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Now you're shooting a lifestyle series for the DC Officers
- 10:57Speaker 1: and Cable. Tell us exactly before we get to the show,
- 11:00Speaker 1: what exactly is the DC Office of Cable and TV.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's funny man um. So when I started in the business,
- 11:07Speaker 1: my very first boss was a beautiful radio personality who
- 11:10Speaker 1: was also with you on serious exem She's on the
- 11:13Speaker 1: Heart and Soul channel. Her name is Michelle Wright. And
- 11:16Speaker 1: Michelle Wright was doing this TV show here in DC
- 11:19Speaker 1: called for two oh two, and it was this really
- 11:22Speaker 1: flashy morning entertainment, uh talk show situation, and it looks
- 11:27Speaker 1: really good on social media. And I kept saying, what
- 11:30Speaker 1: is this and she was like, I want you to
- 11:32Speaker 1: come in and meet with the team here. And so
- 11:35Speaker 1: I went over to this office, which used to be
- 11:37Speaker 1: one of the former b ET headquarters. And I had
- 11:41Speaker 1: no no idea that Washington, d C. Had this government
- 11:46Speaker 1: saction TV, radio, film and entertainment facility right in the
- 11:52Speaker 1: heart of downtown. And the lady who runs the office,
- 11:55Speaker 1: director and g Gates, I knew her because she used
- 11:58Speaker 1: to run the one of theater here and she was like,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I've been dying to get you to host one of
- 12:03Speaker 1: our programs. You were doing all this national TV, but
- 12:06Speaker 1: install for you to come and work at home. And
- 12:08Speaker 1: so they have three channels here on DC Cable. They've
- 12:12Speaker 1: got um uh to h D radio channels and when
- 12:16Speaker 1: films and movies and TV shows come to d C,
- 12:20Speaker 1: they're the office that helps arrange all of that stuff.
- 12:23Speaker 1: They're a part of the Film Commission and all of
- 12:25Speaker 1: that as well. And so I'm hosting a show for them, uh,
- 12:28Speaker 1: for their entertainment channel called Maide in d C. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: it's a lifestyle show that really celebrates businesses and entrepreneurs
- 12:36Speaker 1: and entities that were made in this city, created in
- 12:39Speaker 1: this city, and are offering assets and resources to this city.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And it's really a great extension of of some of
- 12:46Speaker 1: the stuff that I was doing for a while at
- 12:48Speaker 1: the Travel Channel. And um, it feels great to be
- 12:50Speaker 1: able to um, you know, really work at home. I
- 12:52Speaker 1: got to go and co host the Mayor's inaugural ball
- 12:55Speaker 1: as a part of this relation ship and uh, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: being able to to to have the Hollywood experience in
- 13:02Speaker 1: your hometown is a great thing. Well, I think importantly
- 13:05Speaker 1: that you bring that resume and that's what this is
- 13:08Speaker 1: all about, you know, and you can contact a person
- 13:10Speaker 1: like me and I comfortably will give you a contact
- 13:13Speaker 1: to another person to be able to build that bread.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Because d C is a destination city. You know, everybody's
- 13:19Speaker 1: coming to d C. Everybody they do television shows, their
- 13:22Speaker 1: media is a you know, radio one is set up there,
- 13:24Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of television networks are set
- 13:27Speaker 1: up in the DC area, a lot of the of course,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, the heart of the governments in the DC area.
- 13:31Speaker 1: When you do a show like maybe in d C,
- 13:33Speaker 1: which reminds me of a show that I grew up
- 13:34Speaker 1: called p a magazine, there was a local show that
- 13:37Speaker 1: really really was the information source of what happens in
- 13:41Speaker 1: that in that community, which the community at time with
- 13:43Speaker 1: Houston and the d C, you also have Maryland, you
- 13:47Speaker 1: have Virginia, So you're really covering a lot of places
- 13:51Speaker 1: other than d C, or is just DC proper well,
- 13:54Speaker 1: this particular show, because it is a part of the
- 13:57Speaker 1: particular cluster of channels, it's really off the heart of
- 14:00Speaker 1: downtown DC. But everybody in this area, you know, we
- 14:04Speaker 1: we love the DMV. That's what we call it DC
- 14:07Speaker 1: Marrows of Virginia. And I tell people all the time
- 14:09Speaker 1: when they asked me about the area, because if everything
- 14:11Speaker 1: is so close, the city really is kind of shaped
- 14:13Speaker 1: like an egg. If you boil an egg, the yo
- 14:17Speaker 1: would be the heart of downtown d C. And on
- 14:19Speaker 1: the white all the white part on the outside would
- 14:22Speaker 1: be that loop that takes you from Virginia to Maryland.
- 14:24Speaker 1: And there's literally a highway that you could get on
- 14:27Speaker 1: in loop from Virginia to Maryland and never get off
- 14:30Speaker 1: the highway. Yeah, yeah, you want to get off that
- 14:33Speaker 1: highway because that traffic on that highway and feel like
- 14:39Speaker 1: a ball. You feel like a traffic. Now let's talk
- 14:42Speaker 1: about you know you've been We've talked a little bit
- 14:44Speaker 1: about being a social media influencer. You know they say
- 14:47Speaker 1: if once you get over fifty of any you can
- 14:49Speaker 1: be an influencer. Depends on your engagement, you could be
- 14:51Speaker 1: an influenza. What what? What is? What is the direction
- 14:55Speaker 1: you're trying to take your influence as a social media influencer.
- 14:59Speaker 1: We one of the things, um so entertainment is how
- 15:02Speaker 1: I cut my tea fora the business. But you know,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I really don't like to be boxed into just that, like,
- 15:08Speaker 1: um you know, when I have to do cable news
- 15:10Speaker 1: or some of the daytime talk shows and stuff, when
- 15:12Speaker 1: I have to go do entertainment topics, I literally most
- 15:15Speaker 1: times and I can do them without little to no
- 15:17Speaker 1: prep because I'm so well versed and most of the
- 15:20Speaker 1: people and the topics, it doesn't requires the work that
- 15:23Speaker 1: it does if I'm going in talking about the social
- 15:25Speaker 1: issues or some cultural impact issues or more lifestyle oriented issues.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And so my social media for me is being able
- 15:33Speaker 1: to uh share the totality of who I am, you know, UM.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Working in entertainment originally and living in d C, which
- 15:41Speaker 1: was considered a political city, I had to travel a
- 15:44Speaker 1: significant amount of time, so I ended up becoming like
- 15:48Speaker 1: an accidental travel expert. UM. You know, I've been doing
- 15:51Speaker 1: an hundred thousand frequent fire miles a year. I can
- 15:54Speaker 1: tell you which restaurants are the best at various airports.
- 15:58Speaker 1: People email me in contact me about where to stay
- 16:02Speaker 1: and what to do, and I can definitely tell you
- 16:04Speaker 1: where all the best street art and street murals and
- 16:07Speaker 1: all the half cities are. UM. And so because of that,
- 16:09Speaker 1: I like to um include a lot of my travel
- 16:13Speaker 1: influence and my travel ideas and and and my voyage
- 16:17Speaker 1: is on the road on my social media because people
- 16:20Speaker 1: love to try to emulate the experiences that I have
- 16:23Speaker 1: in the travel space and live by For those who
- 16:25Speaker 1: don't travel as much, try to live vicariously through me.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But you know, as as an inn result of that,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you know, that was one of the main reasons of
- 16:33Speaker 1: how I ended up doing some some hosting and some
- 16:36Speaker 1: programming over at Travel Channel. They love the fact that
- 16:39Speaker 1: I was just kind of Hollywood is kind of guy,
- 16:43Speaker 1: but was always on the road and could talk to
- 16:45Speaker 1: you about destinations all over the world. I tell you something.
- 16:49Speaker 1: We are in a minute and a half left with you.
- 16:51Speaker 1: The television event of the year starts this Sunday. You
- 16:56Speaker 1: cannot Can you give me your thoughts on Game of Thrones?
- 17:02Speaker 1: Don't don't uh put me into town square and uh
- 17:06Speaker 1: and and send the people to fight me like they
- 17:08Speaker 1: do on Game of Thrones. But it's not a show
- 17:11Speaker 1: that I watch it, so my god, think Cut off
- 17:17Speaker 1: the line. Cut off the line from I just think
- 17:19Speaker 1: we're gonna go. Mother. You need to catch up six
- 17:22Speaker 1: or six episode you're missing. You need to watch it
- 17:25Speaker 1: this Sunday, everybody, April fourth, It starts the Dragon com
- 17:32Speaker 1: Black folks watching, watching, people watching. Everybody watch the game
- 17:38Speaker 1: except for you, Mr Murray, my entertainment expert. What do
- 17:41Speaker 1: you say? Right there? TV holds a cop pop culture expert.
