- 1:56Speaker 1: it's time to introduce my next guest. My next guest
- 1:59Speaker 1: is one of the pioneers of the natural hair market,
- 2:02Speaker 1: which is very important to understand how it is, how
- 2:05Speaker 1: it has exploded. She founded the award winning hair care
- 2:09Speaker 1: brand Curls that c r u l s fru shore you.
- 2:13Speaker 1: With the lack of products for natural curly hair. She
- 2:15Speaker 1: worked to develop effective and echo conscious products for material
- 2:21Speaker 1: designed for naturally curly hair. Curls is an award winning
- 2:25Speaker 1: leading and the early business of curly hair design. Please
- 2:28Speaker 1: welcome to money making Conversations my friend television personality Arthur
- 2:34Speaker 1: business out of advocate and founder of Curls, as well
- 2:37Speaker 1: as the CEO, Misha Dillinger. Thank you, thank you for
- 2:43Speaker 1: having me. Well, you know, I always gotta get all
- 2:44Speaker 1: that good stuff out about your Misha. He got a
- 2:47Speaker 1: longing there. It's just it's just a uh, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: a statement about who you are. You know that you
- 2:55Speaker 1: are a versa little person and you know always talk
- 2:57Speaker 1: about you know, follow your gifts, all your passions. But
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's not always just one gift. It's not always just
- 3:03Speaker 1: one passion. And let's let's talk about how you are
- 3:06Speaker 1: able to multi multitask these different lanes that are open
- 3:09Speaker 1: enough for you every day, sometimes simultaneously. How do you
- 3:13Speaker 1: how do you navigate that very very good question, um,
- 3:17Speaker 1: And it is really truly all about having the right
- 3:21Speaker 1: team uh in place, because I could not literally do
- 3:25Speaker 1: all of what I do without a good team. And
- 3:28Speaker 1: the team starts at home, so my mates obviously, and
- 3:31Speaker 1: we have to choose your mates widely. They can either
- 3:33Speaker 1: help you or hurt you. But also the team that
- 3:37Speaker 1: you already worked with you. Um, I have an amazing
- 3:41Speaker 1: set of dedicated business people who worked alongside me. So
- 3:46Speaker 1: that's what I'm able to do it all. We know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: Like I would remember, I always tell people some of
- 3:51Speaker 1: my story. When I started my comedy club, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: back in Houston, Texas, I was surrounded by my family
- 3:57Speaker 1: members and first they was doing it for free. And
- 3:59Speaker 1: it starts in the checks come through the door. They went, hey,
- 4:02Speaker 1: we like to look check to you know, which I
- 4:06Speaker 1: didn't budget, Which I didn't budget for. I didn't budget
- 4:08Speaker 1: for the money that they wanted to to stand at
- 4:12Speaker 1: the door to take the tickets, the little things I
- 4:14Speaker 1: thought I took for granted in the relationship. And so
- 4:17Speaker 1: as you started to build your brand, Curls, I'm sure
- 4:19Speaker 1: there was some situation that came up where you didn't
- 4:23Speaker 1: expect to be part of your budget. And that's important
- 4:25Speaker 1: for people to understand that you when you start a business.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And and that's just me just making a statement, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: I would love for you to respond to what I'm saying.
- 4:32Speaker 1: How do you really put together that budget that you're
- 4:35Speaker 1: trying to do when you are launching the business and
- 4:37Speaker 1: start are starting to do the budget planning part that's
- 4:41Speaker 1: very important. Yeah, budget planning is important because if you
- 4:44Speaker 1: don't have all your costs and know what you're gonna stand,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you can easily use your shirt. So I think most importantly, UM,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you need to get someone in your life that can
- 4:54Speaker 1: ntroy you in the space that you're in, because they
- 4:57Speaker 1: can help you see those unfustend costs you don't know out.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So that was one of things I did early on.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Got a mentor that was actually in the hair care
- 5:05Speaker 1: industry and he worked for one of the big consumer
- 5:10Speaker 1: product goods companies and he helped me a lot. So
- 5:14Speaker 1: I was able to number one save in areas because
- 5:16Speaker 1: he connected me to different people in his world. But
- 5:19Speaker 1: he was also able to show me what to expect
- 5:21Speaker 1: and what I expect and help me my budgeting. So
- 5:24Speaker 1: that that's very critical, specially as you start up. You
- 5:27Speaker 1: can't have it as they said, you can't have these
- 5:30Speaker 1: this inflated sense. So I'll make I'll make a dollar,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I keep a dollar keep because it has to be
- 5:37Speaker 1: giving up into a lot of different ways. How big
- 5:39Speaker 1: is your your company right now as far as staff wise, Well,
- 5:44Speaker 1: we have over two Curls ambassadors um, and then we
- 5:49Speaker 1: all over the US and some international and then we
- 5:52Speaker 1: have twenty and our local office and we're here in Dallas,
- 5:56Speaker 1: Texas and that's really really amazing. So so in two
- 6:00Speaker 1: thousand two you started the company. But prior to that,
- 6:02Speaker 1: what was the frustration of just having natural hair and
- 6:05Speaker 1: not having any products to deal with it? Before you start,
- 6:08Speaker 1: before you launched the brand called Curls, which is a
- 6:11Speaker 1: great name by the way, right, Well, that was back before.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You know, we had a lot of options. I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 1: the ethnic aisle back then was uh really had Jerry
- 6:20Speaker 1: co Products, Laxer's hair grease, like nothing. I really wanted
- 6:25Speaker 1: Jerry Carol products that you're going way back now. Yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 1: they was still on the market and you can actually
- 6:31Speaker 1: still find something today, believe it or not. But yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 1: all the thing about the sob sheen and carefree curl
- 6:38Speaker 1: and yeah, so I mean that's why I had to
- 6:40Speaker 1: use for a while, you know, but it was so
- 6:42Speaker 1: greasy and unnatural. But then you would But then when
- 6:45Speaker 1: we looked through the journey of Masha Dillinger, uh, the
- 6:48Speaker 1: whole concept of you know, but you are a person,
- 6:52Speaker 1: just a basic person because you you are a former
- 6:55Speaker 1: marketing executive that fortune company so you always had that
- 6:59Speaker 1: ability to you know, playing, to be able to you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: put an idea concept moving forward because marketing was your
- 7:05Speaker 1: natural background. So correct. So so I'm assuming that you
- 7:10Speaker 1: started putting the plans in place for CURLS while you
- 7:15Speaker 1: were still at your full time job. That is correct.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I had to I always always always mentor and subject.
- 7:22Speaker 1: When I mentor, I suggest um and and recommend that
- 7:26Speaker 1: you keep your day job until your side of hustle
- 7:28Speaker 1: becomes your main hustle and you can no longer do both,
- 7:31Speaker 1: so because you have to keep money, and people want
- 7:34Speaker 1: to just quit their jobs and go in all you
- 7:37Speaker 1: know before and I feel like that's that's great but
- 7:41Speaker 1: awesome and a lot of faith, but practical, It's not
- 7:44Speaker 1: practical in some sense of especially if you have responsibilities
- 7:47Speaker 1: like um then you and I was a mother, So
- 7:51Speaker 1: I always suggest doing both until you can't do both
- 7:54Speaker 1: anymore and you have a long history of success in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the business that shows you can have she maintain or
- 8:00Speaker 1: lift off of that and still we invest back in
- 8:02Speaker 1: the company, because if you're just living on the salary
- 8:05Speaker 1: but can't reinvest anything back into the company, then that
- 8:08Speaker 1: obviously will keep you sale a segment right in hair
- 8:11Speaker 1: and later. But I know, launching two thousand two curls
- 8:15Speaker 1: a line of organic hair care products for every type
- 8:17Speaker 1: of curl at every at any age, and you can
- 8:21Speaker 1: never look back because of the opportunities that is presented
- 8:24Speaker 1: not only for the people who have been trying to
- 8:26Speaker 1: find natural hair care products, but also for people who
- 8:29Speaker 1: have to find a conference zone. And also has changed
- 8:32Speaker 1: the way people can come to work. Now we've seen
- 8:34Speaker 1: such a movement in natural hair care, you know, because
- 8:36Speaker 1: at times, you know, people are fighting their right. Now
- 8:39Speaker 1: in Geargea, they're passing laws that you can't discriminate based
- 8:43Speaker 1: on hair anymore. And she's not ridiculous that we have
- 8:46Speaker 1: to have a law to say that, like what goes
- 8:49Speaker 1: out of my head, I have to be protecting against
- 8:51Speaker 1: discrimination the way it grows naturally, that's just crazy. Well,
- 8:56Speaker 1: we can get upset about it, but I think that
- 8:58Speaker 1: I also know that, you know, because our products, like yours,
- 9:01Speaker 1: they make the carrying of the hair be the management management,
- 9:05Speaker 1: making it more manageable and more and more more, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: because we are with the thing about life is that
- 9:11Speaker 1: it's finally here the season of celebration, and no matter
- 9:15Speaker 1: how you celebrate with family and friends. Whether you're preparing

- 11:07Speaker 1: dot Ai. People who don't understand will discriminate. People who
- 11:11Speaker 1: can't relate will discriminate. And so when I when I
- 11:14Speaker 1: I commend a company like yours, I can be frustrated
- 11:17Speaker 1: by the way the system reacts to us. When I
- 11:19Speaker 1: said react to us, I mean people of color or
- 11:21Speaker 1: people are who are different, people talk different, or have
- 11:24Speaker 1: gender differences. But I also know that you have to
- 11:27Speaker 1: work within the system to be chief success. And that's
- 11:30Speaker 1: where your company is doing. And I have to say that,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know, you were a visionary just two thousand two.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And I know now you know how popular you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: we have conventions now that there's just natural haircare conventions,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and so that didn't happen in two thousand two. My issue,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you have to say, you know, you you you you you,
- 11:50Speaker 1: you created a movement and and and I'm saying that,
- 11:54Speaker 1: you know, sometimes people like you who are so talented,
- 11:56Speaker 1: who so just geared to being successful. This is a
- 12:01Speaker 1: deep breath moment. Hey, my dear, thank you, thank you,
- 12:05Speaker 1: thank you for sitting down, you know, thank you for
- 12:09Speaker 1: sitting down, thank you for avoiding the naysayers. Thank you
- 12:12Speaker 1: for saying, hey, I can leave this company. I can.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I know it's not a clear plan for success because
- 12:19Speaker 1: I always talking about people who are tied to fear.
- 12:21Speaker 1: You know, there's so many people out there doing jobs
- 12:23Speaker 1: and and that they don't want to do because they're
- 12:26Speaker 1: afraid if they get out there they lose that that
- 12:28Speaker 1: conference zone, that that consistent check, that consistent opportunity. But you,
- 12:33Speaker 1: my friend, decided to hey, I can do more. I
- 12:36Speaker 1: could be better. I could be I could. I have
- 12:38Speaker 1: a vision here, and to make that transition to from
- 12:42Speaker 1: corporate to everyday entrepreneur was not an easy one. Can
- 12:45Speaker 1: you explain that to my listeners? Yeah, we definitely was.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But what in my work anything is easy? I don't
- 12:54Speaker 1: think anything is until being broken? Is that easy? No? Hard,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you use your hard. We can choose what we gonna
- 13:05Speaker 1: do in our lives. We have the choice. And I
- 13:08Speaker 1: left Quopeate America because I was facing of corporacism, which
- 13:11Speaker 1: shortened my my ability to get to the top. I
- 13:15Speaker 1: really wanted to go to the top quickly, and they
- 13:17Speaker 1: really cut that in half of like, Okay, no, we
- 13:19Speaker 1: don't want to do We're not looking to promote you,
- 13:21Speaker 1: we're not looking to grow you. You're gonna be in
- 13:24Speaker 1: this position. People that were hired after me got promoted
- 13:27Speaker 1: before me. Then I got a racist manager who was
- 13:31Speaker 1: looking to get rid of me. I realized, Okay, this
- 13:33Speaker 1: is just not for me. I don't have the patience
- 13:34Speaker 1: for this someone that did dictate my life and that
- 13:38Speaker 1: is why I'm I'm here who I am today. But
- 13:41Speaker 1: I want to say that, um, anything that's worth having
- 13:44Speaker 1: is going to be hard. And so I chose this
- 13:47Speaker 1: hard now, that whole natural, natural instinct of marketing and
- 13:51Speaker 1: branding and getting your product out there, because tell us
- 13:54Speaker 1: what how they can get your products well almost anywhere,
- 13:58Speaker 1: So it'sr gets. You can find Curls the target near you,
- 14:03Speaker 1: Sally Right, wal Mart, curl got Biz, or even local
- 14:10Speaker 1: be supply stores. Do you ever go in there? You know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: like I teached yearly on you know, I walked into that,
- 14:17Speaker 1: you know, because I shopped at Walgraint, I shopped at
- 14:18Speaker 1: CVS a lot and stuff like that. Either sometimes I'm
- 14:21Speaker 1: just going to get into medicine and the farmer's department,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and and I walked by and I see your product
- 14:26Speaker 1: and not just you know, does it still just you
- 14:30Speaker 1: look at it and go, wow, this is mine? Did you?
- 14:33Speaker 1: Does that still strike you as an amazing moment in
- 14:37Speaker 1: your life? You know that I get that question sometimes
- 14:40Speaker 1: and and you know, I'm a little bit embarrassfied with
- 14:44Speaker 1: the response. But it's really true. I don't stop to
- 14:49Speaker 1: smell the roads, but when I see the products on
- 14:51Speaker 1: the sholf, I don't go, oh my god, that's so amazing, um,
- 14:56Speaker 1: which I should buy some more. I think about what
- 14:59Speaker 1: I have to still do we have to welcome with them,
- 15:01Speaker 1: do that and oh my god, you know I'm gonna
- 15:03Speaker 1: figure this is exact and so it's constantly a moving
- 15:07Speaker 1: targets and so I do need to stop them all
- 15:11Speaker 1: the roses and the appreciate that, but honestly, I am
- 15:14Speaker 1: just moving and moving and moving. Well do do do
- 15:17Speaker 1: you have these testimonies where people are talking about how,
- 15:20Speaker 1: you know, growing their hair, are the loss of hair
- 15:23Speaker 1: losses affects there, you know, just affects their dignity, affects
- 15:27Speaker 1: there are their confidence and and how this this this, this,
- 15:32Speaker 1: this process is going to change their life, always affecting
- 15:35Speaker 1: their life in such a positive manner going on in
- 15:37Speaker 1: public aiding, socializing. Do you have that part of the
- 15:41Speaker 1: campaign as well? Well, we we do. We highlight those
- 15:45Speaker 1: whenever we get them in. But there are a lot
- 15:47Speaker 1: of women obviously who deal with alopecia, women who deal
- 15:52Speaker 1: with hair loss from hormonal changes and the post pregnancy
- 15:56Speaker 1: um all the different medication, you know, health shoes beyond
- 16:01Speaker 1: just aging, you know, there are other things that can
- 16:03Speaker 1: cause hair quotes issues and lack of self esteem. Our
- 16:06Speaker 1: our hairs are kind of glory. So yes, when whenever
- 16:09Speaker 1: we get those, we definitely highlight them, right and because
- 16:12Speaker 1: I think that's important, because that's natural, that's a that's
- 16:14Speaker 1: the honest because we are in the business to make money.
- 16:18Speaker 1: We are in the business make money. But when you
- 16:20Speaker 1: when you create something to create a format that also
- 16:23Speaker 1: changes lives and makes people give some confidence and make
- 16:26Speaker 1: them feel positive about how they opened the front door
- 16:29Speaker 1: and how people look at them, I think that needs
- 16:31Speaker 1: to also be highlighted. And that's what you're doing with
- 16:33Speaker 1: the growing Slate campaign. Correct, yes, yes, absolutely, Well Cook, Well,
- 16:39Speaker 1: there was something I wanted to bring up as well.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It was in twent eighteen. Uh you launched his Black
- 16:43Speaker 1: Girls Making Millions Academy. Uh yeah, you know that that
- 16:49Speaker 1: to educate and uplift aspiring female entrepreneurs. Why and um,
- 16:54Speaker 1: what can I do to help promote that? Well, well,
- 16:58Speaker 1: thank you, but as soon as we launched the next one,
- 17:01Speaker 1: we'll definitely a circle back so you can help promote it.
- 17:03Speaker 1: But what we launched that after I wrapped my show
- 17:05Speaker 1: on own Mind Your Business Mehitia and we're helping a
- 17:09Speaker 1: woman's color, um she success and so show Graphic got
- 17:13Speaker 1: lots of requests to do one on one mentorship, which
- 17:16Speaker 1: I obviously didn't have the time to do. Everyone individually
- 17:20Speaker 1: credit this academy to help women of color that are
- 17:23Speaker 1: in different phases of entrepreneur path UM started up to
- 17:26Speaker 1: in a business already, but we can owe it and
- 17:29Speaker 1: then those the funding. We had three different tracks and
- 17:31Speaker 1: we created a path to them, connected them with the resources,
- 17:34Speaker 1: had a lot of breakout sessions, UM workshop conferences, we
- 17:38Speaker 1: had eat and we had it was amazing, It was amazing.
- 17:42Speaker 1: UM we sold out. We turned the switch on and
- 17:46Speaker 1: filled out and tickets in thirty minutes. So we knew
- 17:48Speaker 1: that it was definitely something that was going to be
- 17:51Speaker 1: impactful in the extremely extremely impactful. She's the founder CEO
- 17:55Speaker 1: of curls Uh Growing Slave Campaign and UM, my friend,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you owe me a lot of put you to work
