Europe and the Faith Chapter 5 - (Cont. 1)

In which we examine the murky and scant historical records of Britain’s early post-Roman centuries, chiefly filtered through the moralistic and imperfect account of St. Gildas, who paints a picture of barbarian auxiliaries invited into the island and subsequent local strife rather than wide-scale destruction. Through careful reasoning and a touch of common sense, it is shown that despite the tumult there was a continuing, though diminished, Romanised civilisation resisting the encroaching pagan elements along the eastern shores, with no outright conquest or collapse within this obscure era.
