- 0:06Hello, and welcome to two girls in a pod.
- 0:08I'm Sharon, I'm Christy and we are super, super excited to have
- 0:12a guest on today. We met her because a friend of
- 0:16mine went to her to get her hair done and she looked fabulous
- 0:18when she was done. I said, where did you go?
- 0:21She said to Salon Bella. Yeah.
- 0:24So we decided, hey, let's have her Parisa on.
- 0:28So, give us your full name. Carissa good boy.
- 0:31Hello. Okay and Bruce that.
- 0:34You've kind of been doing this for a hot minute.
- 0:38Yes. Since 89, this is all what 34
- 0:41years and how long have you had this Salon?
- 0:45I started working as Salam Bella in 2001 and I took over Salon.
- 0:51Bella about eight years ago, okay?
- 0:55So we're going to even go a little further back and let's
- 0:57talk about, you know, kind of what kind of your dream.
- 1:00Aspirations where all that came from?
- 1:02How did you get into this kind of thing?
- 1:04Just so people kind of know that background because, you know, I
- 1:07think oftentimes people have a vision of what they want to do
- 1:09and then it's like, how do you make it happen?
- 1:12Right. Well, interesting, so I am
- 1:16originally from Iran and I moved to u.s. in 1985.
- 1:21So I was 13 years old and the reason we moved was because it
- 1:26was the Ron and Iraq war. So, So at that time, my brother
- 1:31before he turned 14, he had to leave the country unless he had
- 1:37to stay for future military. So my parents, this was the
- 1:41first time this was happening in our country.
- 1:44So my parents were worried about is so because of him we all
- 1:49moved to u.s. When I moved here, we actually
- 1:53came to visit my brother and we never went back.
- 1:56So things changed for us a lot. My brother moved.
- 2:00About six months prior to us, but when we came to visit him,
- 2:04my mom was like, he's only 14, I can't leave him here by himself,
- 2:07so we end up staying here. When you say he was 14, when he
- 2:11came here, where did he come to? And who did he come?
- 2:13We came. Um he actually got a student
- 2:16visa and he moved here and stayed with my uncle here is in
- 2:22Colorado Colorado Colorado. Okay and Denver.
- 2:25Okay so he moved there and stayed with my uncle and We came
- 2:31the summer to visit him as see how everything is goes.
- 2:34And he was not, he was 14, he was depressed.
- 2:37He was away from the family, we end up staying here.
- 2:42Long story short, my mom was a great chef and she got a green
- 2:47card towards working for us restaurant and we kind of worked
- 2:52under her actual, she got a work permit before a Green Park and
- 2:56we all worked and went to school under her under her Like an
- 3:01umbrella kind of thing. And then once she ended, I went
- 3:04to school at the beginning, I always loved hair.
- 3:07I always loved her. And then when I start school, I
- 3:11actually skipped 8th and 9th grade.
- 3:15And from seventh grade, I moved to 10th grade because of they
- 3:19did a test of Science, and Math, and all that stuff.
- 3:22And we were, I was a hit mostly, so they put me to Tampa.
- 3:26So I was only 13 when I was on 10th grade.
- 3:30So when I graduated, I was only 15 and a half.
- 3:33We'll talk about several culture shocks here because, you know,
- 3:36when you come and you know, we talk about culture on here too.
- 3:40What was that? Like for you?
- 3:41Because it's such a different culture from Iran on my, yeah.
- 3:45It's very different. Very different first, I, we
- 3:49weren't here to stay. We were here to visit.
- 3:52So, just leaving everything and coming.
- 3:56Basically things to you later and never go back, it was tough.
- 4:00So you left your home and everything.
- 4:01Everything every goodness. Okay.
- 4:03Left everything. And it was hard, it was really
- 4:06hard and we didn't come from money or anything.
- 4:10We actually, I worked at a church and I babysat, my brother
- 4:17worked as a janitor in a school. I have a sister that at that
- 4:21time, she was 7. So my dad would work.
- 4:25My mom worked. It was tough.
- 4:28It was very tough. He had a tough time.
- 4:29I'm I remember the time Halloween we dress up my sister
- 4:33and we'll go to each McDonald to just get a Happy Meal so we can
- 4:38we can eat, right? So coming from a family back
- 4:43home, that it was like it was all family and we were so close
- 4:47to something that you start all over again.
- 4:51It was a wake-up call. You were all on our own we're
- 4:54just a family that needed to kind of make sure we have eight
- 4:57hundred dollars a month to pay for.
- 5:00Rent to pay for the food. So we all work together, we all
- 5:04work together and our paychecks will go to my parents to make
- 5:08sure we have everything we would get.
- 5:10I don't know if you guys ever remember that Kmart Bluelight
- 5:14special. Yes, we had five dollar
- 5:17allowance out of our paychecks every week.
- 5:20So we will save it up. So we can go once a month to
- 5:23Blue Light, special, and Kmart expended that.
- 5:27And they used to have some good stuff at that.
- 5:34That was my favorite thing. I bought this for myself.
- 5:39Yeah. My only Buddy, isn't that
- 5:41amazing? It was so it's kind of very much
- 5:44a humble start for you. Yes, it was, it was tough.
- 5:48It was tough to see everybody, our family going through that,
- 5:51just to kind of survive in a country that is sad to say that
- 5:56we didn't want to go back to a country that was like, more
- 5:59pressure. And you couldn't do much so very
- 6:03different. So we started school here.
- 6:06I went to North High School in Denver and I graduated when I
- 6:11was little over 15, I still did not.
- 6:14We still at that point. Didn't have our, we were going
- 6:17to school and everything under work permit of my mom.
- 6:20So we didn't have a green card or anything like that.
- 6:23So I couldn't go to college at that time and you would have to
- 6:28have, I didn't have it my Brother did have a student visa
- 6:31but I didn't have anything. So we would you could go to tech
- 6:36centers or anything for like some like a cosmetology.
- 6:39I think I loved cosmetology. So we moved to Boulder.
- 6:44My parents open, it business in Boulder and I graduated at
- 6:48Boulder High my last year of school.
- 6:51I end up going to the text folder, text Center for
- 6:54cosmetology and I finished that in nine months, but it still did
- 6:59not have Work them to work. So I had people come over at our
- 7:05house and I would do facials and I will do hair.
- 7:09I got my certification and it will just tip me for what I
- 7:14would do. It was tough.
- 7:16It was very tough. Then when I turn 17, we end up
- 7:23getting interviewed for our green card, but the way that
- 7:28worked we had to lie. Leave the country and go to
- 7:31another country for our interview.
- 7:33And our interview had to be. If it didn't go well and didn't
- 7:39approve us, then we couldn't come back to the country.
- 7:43We would have to go back to Iran.
- 7:46So the interview was all about. If my mom is legit Chef, if she
- 7:54is really working at a restaurant, they would ask all
- 7:57that question. So we went for two weeks to
- 7:59germinate. Me and that's where the
- 8:01interview was. But we would have to get to the
- 8:04Germany that and then they will say, when we got the letters it
- 8:07says your interview would be within a week of this.
- 8:11So we would have to be there before that week and then go in
- 8:16and let him know. We're here and then give him our
- 8:19things and then they'll give us our interview.
- 8:21So the interview was my mom and my brother went in because of my
- 8:26mom wasn't speaking, well of English.
- 8:28So she would translate Eight. So, they asked questions about,
- 8:32how do you make this? Because she was special as in
- 8:35Persian food. How do you make this?
- 8:37How do you do this? And she got approved.
- 8:40We got approved. Then we had to wait to get a
- 8:43letters and stuff. So it took about two weeks in
- 8:45Germany to get our letters and then we came back to us and a
- 8:52few weeks later, we got our green cards.
- 8:54So then I decided to work at JCPenney that was my first job.
- 9:01I'm go to college. I wanted to do computer.
- 9:04Science is interesting because I always thought I'm going to do
- 9:08computer and all that stuff. I loved her, but I always
- 9:11thought I'm going to do that. So I went to college when I was
- 9:1417, I started computer science and I did not like it.
- 9:20That's when I found out, I would look at people's like, oh, I can
- 9:22do this with their hair. I can cut it this way, or I
- 9:26should, I should give her my card and I was Like this is not.
- 9:30I cannot sit somewhere, not talk, and give my opinion and
- 9:35just look at a computer. So let me see, if I understand
- 9:38this correctly, your classmates are in there.
- 9:39Your professors are in there and you're looking at, oh my God.
- 9:42They would look so much better on this hairstyle.
- 9:45Yes. Yes or looking at somebody's
- 9:47behind it. I mean, I'm back their hair is
- 9:50like oh no, it was bad. It was like, I couldn't
- 9:54concentrate. So I came home and I told my
- 9:57parents that I know, I will finish school but I'm not going
- 10:00for computer science. I got my associates degree in
- 10:03marketing. Okay, so that's kind of small.
- 10:06Yes, I got my associates degree marketing and I've been one of
- 10:10those people that is like, if I have a dream, I'm just going to
- 10:15go for it, which I really highly recommend it.
- 10:18Don't get scared. Don't look at things.
- 10:20Just do it and work hard on it, you know, at it to get where you
- 10:25want to be. So even within that when you
- 10:28said, you know, you have that dream.
- 10:29Did you, did you look at the steps to make it happen while
- 10:33obviously, because you went into marketing instead of computer
- 10:36science because computer science was going to do anything for
- 10:38you? Yes.
- 10:40And I wanted to have a degree but honestly out in the field is
- 10:43where you learn everything. Yes.
- 10:45You have the tools. Yes.
- 10:47You can marketing. Even, like classes, I could have
- 10:50even take classes business classes and learn what I've
- 10:53learned. But I was like, after the school
- 10:57after night, this is what I want.
- 10:59I want to have My own Salon. Okay.
- 11:01And that was my dream. That was like, I don't care how
- 11:05old I am, I don't care if I'm able to, I didn't have money,
- 11:10but I wanted to have my own squat.
- 11:13I was 19 that I opened my first salon and Denver, and he was
- 11:18Salon Parisa on Dry Creek and University.
- 11:22And I just went and I just got a place small, it was in a
- 11:29shopping center. Our, I knew that I had to come
- 11:32up with this amount of money to build it.
- 11:35I ask for help. I asked, I had a couple of
- 11:38people that made us stations. I looked around and I bought
- 11:44used chairs and use shampoo bowls and family helped to
- 11:50install it. It was doable, it was doable.
- 11:54And then I started at the beginning, I all I cared was to
- 11:58make the It's is so I didn't care to make so much money.
- 12:04I care to make the payments and for two years commit myself that
- 12:09I can make the payments, I live with my family, whatever I need
- 12:12to do and I hired a couple of few people that had clientele
- 12:18with the cheap Booth so they can just kind of start and then
- 12:22that's how I started I started and I had that Salon told my son
- 12:27was a year old. I got married.
- 12:30I still have my salon, I had my son and he was a year old and I
- 12:36sold it to my nail tech Monza. That was my first Salon, it
- 12:42wasn't easy but I can tell you that I was only 19 when I did
- 12:48it. So and you feel like at this
- 12:50point it was worth it, right? It's worth it.
- 12:52It was worth it. Yes, you work hard, but if you
- 12:56really want it you get it. Well, I think there's such a
- 12:59difference. To when you're doing those kind
- 13:01of businesses like when you do the cosmetology because that's
- 13:05so much about also giving something to the person who
- 13:08comes in right? He said I mean, it's like a,
- 13:11it's like a different relationship.
- 13:12I tell you, she makes her hair look beautiful.
- 13:15Yeah, you know, I chose this because I love what I do, right?
- 13:20And I have to say it, there is money in it.
- 13:23People sometimes I think a lot of stylus or cosmetology when
- 13:28they go into it. And at the beginning is hard,
- 13:32everything is hard at the beginning, you have to build
- 13:34that clientele, you have to be social, you have to, but it's
- 13:38definitely if you have kids, if you have family, you take care
- 13:43of is definitely one of those businesses that you can work
- 13:47around all that, you can set your schedule, you can be with
- 13:51your family and work two days of 10 hours a day.
- 13:55And then have three days off with your family is one of those
- 13:58jobs that you Can make a living, a good living and set your
- 14:04schedule, but you do have to work hard, you know, it's really
- 14:07interesting because every once in a while when I'm talking to
- 14:10people and we've talked about this to someone to say, oh,
- 14:14that's too much to pay for hair. I'm not going to pay $30 for a
- 14:19haircut or whatever. I think, people forget that even
- 14:22haircuts go with inflation, it does.
- 14:25But also goes with education, I actually did have there was a
- 14:28time that I had a client, I walking walked in and I was
- 14:34doing a haircut and she walked in and she asked how much is a
- 14:39haircut, and we said start at that time, well, that was few
- 14:44years ago, several years ago, at that time, it started at 45.
- 14:49Mmm, she said 45 to just cut my hair, what do you do?
- 14:57That is so special. You know, interest.
- 14:59Part is I couldn't answer that at first.
- 15:02I was like, I was off guard. I don't like it's 45 and I just
- 15:07left that way that night I came home and I was like why did I
- 15:11bothered me that? I couldn't answer her and I
- 15:15couldn't come up with something to say.
- 15:17So I was like, why am I charging 45?
- 15:20And then I realized, okay, I put money into school.
- 15:26I go every three months. I go to classes.
- 15:29Has I pay for those classes? I pay for my trips to Chicago
- 15:34for a hair show and see what's new.
- 15:36What's out there? Stuff is the education that
- 15:40ongoing education that I get that.
- 15:42I actually deliver to a client and I wish I was like I wish you
- 15:46would come back so I can answer that question.
- 15:48What we're taught, but you learn, it's like interesting to
- 15:53know that this is it. When you come and sit in my
- 15:56chair. I'm not just taking the scissors
- 15:59and It. Okay, this is what you want.
- 16:01I'll give it to you with sit and talk.
- 16:03We have a consultation I'll let you know.
- 16:06What will look good. I'll teach you how you do your
- 16:10hair style every morning. If you don't know how to do it,
- 16:14I'll tell you to come back. It's all of that is part of my
- 16:17hair cut and that's what makes it different than the other
- 16:20people, and that is the specialist.
- 16:24Like, if you come in and get your haircut and you get your
- 16:26and I show you how to style it, but you go home and you don't
- 16:29know how Ow, call me. That's what I tell him.
- 16:31Call me. I'm with white hair.
- 16:33Come with your blow dryer. Come with your round brush.
- 16:35You're going to do it. I'm going to watch.
- 16:38And a lot of times you see how they section their hair, or they
- 16:41hold it brush and it's wrong. And once you teach them is
- 16:45priceless. But yeah, what kind of
- 16:47interesting because you'll do that.
- 16:49Okay, just so everybody knows, I do not, do my own hair Parisa,
- 16:53cuts it colors, it make, does that part?
- 16:56And then Christie does the straightening stuff Socastee.
- 17:00Irisa and Christie talked about what they're going to do to my
- 17:03hair. She said, sir to make sure we're
- 17:07on the same page he tells you what to do is easier for her to
- 17:14style which I love. You know what?
- 17:19I'm okay with that because I know what my areas are and
- 17:24stuff. So I know it's not my area
- 17:26people I will mess with somebody's mind every day but
- 17:29please do. Make me mess with my hair.
- 17:31That's where I'm at. But you know we have a friend
- 17:33June. We're talking to her one day and
- 17:36we were talking about services and one of the things she said
- 17:39is you got to charge what you're worth and you know because I
- 17:45know I struggled with that. I've been a therapist for over
- 17:4820 years and even to set a rate on their like, oh God.
- 17:51That's too much. And I forget that if people
- 17:54really want the service, they will pay for it.
- 17:57Yes. And there is value in the And
- 17:59like you said, you know, I do trainings, I have to keep my
- 18:02licensure up, you know, I had to do a master's degree with two
- 18:05years post in order to get this license.
- 18:08So it's and then I've been in this business for a long time,
- 18:11and I think that's what it is is when you learn to charge your
- 18:14worth because a lot of times people don't see those behind
- 18:17the scenes things that take place and no real Transitions.
- 18:21And you know, is other things, too.
- 18:22I mean, I've been doing it for 34 years.
- 18:25Imagine what it's doing to my hands right on my neck.
- 18:28All of that is Is coming out of my pocket to make sure I'm
- 18:32feeling good and giving still what I can to people.
- 18:36And I highly recommend if when you going I mean if you really
- 18:40don't your hair cut your hair doesn't matter to you which I
- 18:43think it's wrong. And I'll go over that, too.
- 18:47But then do get a ten dollar haircut.
- 18:51If you really do don't you don't really care and you don't mind
- 18:54it, but I think the hair the eyebrows is framing around.
- 18:59Face, it makes you feel good. When you get up and you have it,
- 19:04it's like bringing a PJ all day. You're going to add, you're
- 19:06going to feel like you're in bed, the hold it.
- 19:09But when you get up and do your hair, your makeup, your self
- 19:13steem changes. Yeah, you want to go out and do
- 19:17something? You think about how great you
- 19:20look or how within yourself, you're strong to do whatever you
- 19:24want. Do right now.
- 19:25It really is a lift up. Its I feel like you should as a
- 19:29woman. You should take care of
- 19:30yourself, right, little things, it doesn't have to be.
- 19:33So if I think every woman is beautiful, every shape, every
- 19:37body is all about yourself, how you present yourself as you've
- 19:42done this? When you talk about self-esteem
- 19:44and stuff, do you have any of those clients of yours that?
- 19:46I just stood out that come in and you see him?
- 19:49And you can kind of almost feel that lack of self-esteem or
- 19:53whatever. And then you do this haircut on
- 19:56him and then they see themselves.
- 19:59Absolutely. Little late.
- 20:00Absolutely. There is so many clients that
- 20:03come in and the first thing they do is they look at their flaws
- 20:10like yeah. My forehead is too too short or
- 20:15too long. I have this on my neck is you
- 20:19know wrinkled or something. Or so you kind of look at that
- 20:24stuff but you also try to tell them.
- 20:26No I mean okay your forehead. Is too short.
- 20:30Let's do this haircut. That makes it like let's give
- 20:33you a little bit higher bangs that comes a little bit further
- 20:36back. So it makes your forehead look
- 20:38longer when you things are a little bit coming back.
- 20:42Little bit further into the back of your hair.
- 20:45So it's like it will help you to get that longer for head or your
- 20:50neck. So let's cover.
- 20:51Let's do framing little bit around your face so that will
- 20:54help with the not showing much of your neck.
- 20:57But you also have to remember, okay?
- 20:59You have beautiful eyes, you have a great cheekbones so let's
- 21:04let's get something that makes that show more menu.
- 21:08Let's do some few highlights around your so it makes
- 21:10picturise come out got beautiful blue eyes with a beautiful skin
- 21:15of this. If you do little bit of a red
- 21:17it's going to make it, bring it out, copper, is going to bring
- 21:19it on. So play with the beauty of the
- 21:24certain features that they have and then try to kind of like
- 21:29Bring those up and minimize minimize the other and that
- 21:34helps. But those are all from again,
- 21:37from what I've learned, what I've seen in pasture.
- 21:41I mean, sometimes we are like the therapist as well, because
- 21:45the therapist of beauty, they don't see it, they don't look at
- 21:50it or, you know, the sit there. And there's a lot of times they
- 21:54sit there and talk about their family or talk about this and
- 21:57talk about while they're getting their hair done.
- 21:59But at the end when you show them, that beauty, all of that
- 22:03is gone. All of that is just like a
- 22:06relief. They talked about it is back.
- 22:08Now is about themselves now. It's about their hair and their
- 22:11beauty. It's just beautiful.
- 22:13Yeah, I'm always curious and person knows this so whatever
- 22:16she's doing, I'm always asking if yes, what are you doing?
- 22:19Why is that? And I always love that you
- 22:22always answer my questions. Yeah because to me it is such a
- 22:25foreign thing and even like we talked about this, you know,
- 22:29people A picture in and say, make me look like this.
- 22:32Yes, yes. I do.
- 22:34Like when people bring pictures and the reason I like it because
- 22:38then I can compare with them, okay?
- 22:41Some people bring pictures and they have very fine hair and
- 22:44they bring this curly hair picture, and it's a doable to a
- 22:50point. It's not going to be the same.
- 22:53But how much time are you going to put on it?
- 22:55Are you going to get up every morning and wash it and curl it?
- 23:00What do you do with your hair? Those are the questions you
- 23:02should. If your stylus is not asking
- 23:06you, you should either ask them or tell them.
- 23:10This is what I do with my hair, I don't style it.
- 23:13I don't use round brush or I get up in the morning and use a
- 23:16curling iron and a round brush based on what you know, tell me
- 23:20what you can give me, if the status is not asking, this
- 23:24should be you asking them otherwise as a stylist.
- 23:28I do. I sit down.
- 23:29Ask them the first time when they become the first time
- 23:32because I don't know them, they don't know me.
- 23:34So I asked him if it's a haircut.
- 23:37What do you do with it? How do you dry it?
- 23:39How often do you wash it? You use a round brush to use a
- 23:42blow dryer. Do you let it dry?
- 23:44Naturally? Do you curl it?
- 23:46Do you use any products? What kind of products do you
- 23:49use? All of that is based on what I'm
- 23:51going to give you? Are you going to be one of those
- 23:54people that are going to be getting up in the morning and
- 23:56just kind of like wet it and let it dry?
- 23:59Naturally. Or are you one of those that he
- 24:01would like to blend brush it and blow dry it?
- 24:04Based on that, I can tell you what's better for your hair and
- 24:08I love that you go into detail like that and it really is.
- 24:11It's been an education. And yeah going there because
- 24:15there was a lot of ideas I had about.
- 24:17You know, how when you go in, just take a picture in like you
- 24:20say, and oh yeah, I would love to have this, but I love that
- 24:23you work within the framework of what that person does on a daily
- 24:27and that, and you help them to understand well, Don't want to
- 24:29spend this much time, or whatever.
- 24:31Then look at this, or that is very huge, is a huge thing.
- 24:37I've seen clients that come in every, which is totally, this is
- 24:41their budget, and it's great. They still come to me and I love
- 24:44that. But they come every three to
- 24:46four months, to get their hair cut color, mmm.
- 24:49So, sometimes they come in and they want this bride or this
- 24:55like a platinum blond or something.
- 24:58So I have to sit down and talk To them, I'm just giving a name
- 25:01Jenny. Do you really want this?
- 25:04That means you have to come in your this level of a color is
- 25:08six level lighter than your natural color.
- 25:11So if you're coming right now in four months, are you willing to
- 25:15come in in eight to ten weeks and pay this amount of money?
- 25:19So I'm not only yes, I'm going to make a lot of money, but is
- 25:23this client going to be happy with that?
- 25:25And coming in at 8 is, can she afford that that I'm not here
- 25:29to? Speak that money at that day and
- 25:31that time and let her go and then not knowing if she's able
- 25:35to. And then next time she has to
- 25:36pay more to bring to recolor it and change it to what she was
- 25:43every four months that I was she was coming right and under
- 25:45helping them understand that that's a very gradual process.
- 25:49The picture that you bring in, you may not be able to walk out
- 25:51of here with that today because I got to light.
- 25:54Exactly. And there is like I have clients
- 25:56that they want to go from to their natural color.
- 25:59Oh, great. Yes, I can do that but that is a
- 26:03day of work, right? That is 150 to 250 dollar an
- 26:07hour. Yes, you don't have to come, you
- 26:10may have to come in for a toner couple of times between and I
- 26:14can get it as close as I can but which is great.
- 26:17Some people will spend it and never want to color their hair
- 26:19again. But they also need to understand
- 26:21that this is going to be in six months.
- 26:24You still have to come in for a tour just because you pay me two
- 26:27thousand dollar for Your hair all the way doesn't mean there's
- 26:32nothing else will do. Those are the things you have to
- 26:35know before you walk in and ask for something that which was
- 26:39interesting because my hair is purple.
- 26:42And so my thing is is the purple just put purple on purple is a
- 26:46dark color. Come on now and you know, Percy
- 26:49had to educate me. Yeah, because it was it was,
- 26:52it's kind of been a process. It is a process.
- 26:54You have dark. Let me go over your hair.
- 26:57You have dark hair with gray. When you put color people think,
- 27:01oh, you can just put color over, it will color deposit, doesn't
- 27:05lift. The only thing that will lift is
- 27:07bleach bleach or higher, developer, of colors will lift
- 27:12the color. So you have to lift the color
- 27:15first and get it to a highlighter level of a 9 to 10,
- 27:19which is more of a blond. Then then you can apply any
- 27:23color you want to, but you also have to cocktail the color
- 27:27purple's greens aqua. Those are secondary colors or
- 27:31not a permanent are the you have to mix those colors to come to
- 27:36that color. So you have to make sure that
- 27:39the level of the blonde you have underneath is this level that
- 27:43actually this color is going to come.
- 27:45If you put a purple on a black paper you're not going to see
- 27:50it. If you put a purple on a yellow
- 27:52paper, you'll see the different of a purple.
- 27:55But you will see is different than a white paper.
- 27:58So it's all Depends That Base color.
- 28:01The paper is your hair so if it's black is not going to show.
- 28:06If it's yellow is going to show a different purple.
- 28:08If it's white, it's going to be a bride of purple.
- 28:11You know. One of the things that I found
- 28:12really interesting that you said to us is when you come out and
- 28:17you'll like Christie's hair is like a tle color and but you'll
- 28:22come out and you'll show it and you're right, it's like you're
- 28:25looking at it but it's like you're seeing different colors,
- 28:28each person. See a different color in that
- 28:31color. I write it is true.
- 28:34It depends on the eyes. Your eye color, I have dark eyes
- 28:39so I see green and blue and red differently than green eyes and
- 28:43blue eyes. So a lot of times I bring, when
- 28:46you tell me you want a red hair or blue hair or green or copper
- 28:50or whatever or just a brown, I bring the color to you because
- 28:56what is brown to you than me, right?
- 28:59Right, that's very different. You see brown that I see a
- 29:02little red in it, but you see that as a brown?
- 29:05Yeah. Or you see it ash brown.
- 29:09You see a very ashy Brown as a brown and I see that as like,
- 29:14total green and bass in it. So, it's very important when you
- 29:20ask for a collar. And the person says, okay, you
- 29:22want Brown. I'll, you know, I'll call your
- 29:24hair brown, ask them, can you bring the color swatch so we can
- 29:29see. The Browns that you have.
- 29:31Well, I know one of the things you did with me because I would
- 29:33say about a brown and I know I would bring a picture and you
- 29:37would look at it and you would ask me how I see that because
- 29:40you would say about how you see a little red in it and I'd be
- 29:43like, oh no, I don't want anything with a red undertone
- 29:46because I know. Is it lightens?
- 29:47It's going to look orange. And I don't like that, right?
- 29:50So but I didn't see it that way. So exactly.
- 29:53It all depends on the. It's that's why it's very
- 29:56important to look at the color swatch because was especially,
- 30:00especially if your client comes in and I see.
- 30:04Okay, she has green eyes, she's seeing things a little different
- 30:07than I do. So I need to bring it
- 30:09regardless, you should, because people don't some people are
- 30:13colorblind. So two people don't see same
- 30:15color as you do a purple or a green special, that kind of
- 30:19colors are not the same as what I see.
- 30:23And a lot of times I show you that color but that and you
- 30:26said, this is what I like. But that doesn't mean I'm going
- 30:28back and said, cut Eggs in the same thing.
- 30:30I have to mix something that is actually is going just like
- 30:34those papers if it's yellow and you want it to look like the
- 30:38purple under white. I need to go and cocktail that
- 30:41to make sure that color comes out the way.
- 30:44You see it? Well, I think those are the
- 30:46behind the scenes things, you know.
- 30:48We're just, like I said, we're curious by Nature.
- 30:49So we're like I said, always asking questions because those
- 30:53are like, well, why are you doing it that way?
- 30:54And then, you'll tell me while if it doesn't bleed onto this or
- 30:57whatever. Yeah, but I think, That if it's
- 31:00something that it's like your hair, while my hair is important
- 31:02to me, but I think most people's hair should be important to
- 31:05them, but if it is whatever it is, that's important.
- 31:09You ask a lot of questions. It doesn't matter what it is.
- 31:12Whether it's your hair, you know, whatever, Italy,
- 31:15absolutely, you should feel. Like, if you ask the question
- 31:19that it's not a working relationship because I know for
- 31:22you, that one time, you went to the one and you wanted your hair
- 31:24done differently and her response was what.
- 31:26Oh yeah, she was not happy. So I just The last time I went
- 31:30there and I understand that she, she was a professional, she
- 31:35probably knew better than me in that situation, she didn't
- 31:38explain or do anything like that.
- 31:40And I love that about you because you always you know,
- 31:44explain why you know you think it's going to come out this way
- 31:47or whatever and and you just really helped educate us on that
- 31:51and I think people should ask more questions like that and
- 31:54hopefully they get somebody purses great about that.
- 31:57She'll answer your questions and and And help you to understand
- 32:01why you wouldn't might not choose this.
- 32:04Yeah, you don't want to come out of there, feeling bad.
- 32:06And I think you really did in the way because she didn't say
- 32:09it nicely, she was very abrupt. She was very it was the way when
- 32:12she said it and that was really you know and Christy walked out
- 32:16you know they're like whoa you know so do we want to go back to
- 32:20somebody like that know when you're sitting in a stylist
- 32:24chair, I feel like if you were there for 23 hours, you need to
- 32:28know what's happening. You need to know what's going
- 32:31on. If this is the first time a
- 32:33client comes in for instance you guys come a lot.
- 32:35So now you know, the procedure if I'm doing totally something
- 32:38different than I will explain it but and if you have questions,
- 32:42you ask, I'm because you already know, I explained everything.
- 32:45So you're feeling comfortable to the that kind of stuff, but the
- 32:48first time you come in and if I'm doing anything to your hair,
- 32:52I will tell them. This is what I'm doing.
- 32:54I'm back combing, your hair because you don't want it on the
- 32:56roofs and if I back comb your hair, it I will eliminate those
- 33:00lines like extrait lines that you can see in a highlight.
- 33:04So I have to explain other words.
- 33:06If I start back combing your hair and putting a colors.
- 33:08Like what is she doing right? Why should why should tangling
- 33:11my hair is this is going to damage my hair.
- 33:13You will not know what I'm doing and I'm just going with my work
- 33:17well that's wrong. That that is wrong.
- 33:19I got all these education so I can educate you with it.
- 33:24Not just for my own knowledge. You need to know what's
- 33:26happening with your hair. If I'm doing a On blowout or a
- 33:30carrot. And a lot of people call it for
- 33:32a keratin or a Brazilian blood. They don't even know the
- 33:34difference. They don't even know what it
- 33:36does. They think it's going to
- 33:37straighten the hair. It doesn't, it doesn't
- 33:39straighten it. The hair, it just relaxes the
- 33:42role. They don't even know what the
- 33:43steps. So if they come in and spending
- 33:45three hundred fifty dollars on it thinking, oh, I saw it online
- 33:50and this is what it does. Well, I need to tell you what it
- 33:55does and how the processes work and why is $50, you're not just
- 34:01paying me that much because I it's on YouTube, and this is
- 34:05very, you know, out people everybody's doing it.
- 34:08So I'm going to cost charge of this.
- 34:11Well, and I think the other thing is too is that sometimes
- 34:13we have different terminology like I call it tame.
- 34:16When the Keratin to chain fits my hair will be unruly if I
- 34:19don't do something sometimes but also all use the term, I want it
- 34:24to look more edgy. And so as of use these terms
- 34:27list, And that's why we have Christie as my interpreter when
- 34:32it comes to. Yeah, I know.
- 34:34There's sometimes, I'm like, explain what you mean by edgy,
- 34:38its you have to because what again what you thinking is
- 34:42totally different than what I'm thinking, right?
- 34:44Everybody's perception perception.
- 34:46And I think what's really cool is, I think, you know, in for us
- 34:49and I don't know about y'all out there but finding somebody with
- 34:52your hair. You want to find that person.
- 34:54Once we find somebody where they're like, oh God, please
- 34:56don't retire, don't move, do you know what I mean?
- 34:59Because it becomes a really strong working relationship,
- 35:04right? Let me yes.
- 35:06So there is a couple of things like when you try to find
- 35:09somebody ask the questions. If they don't ask those
- 35:13questions, have your tools with you.
- 35:17I don't like to come in through a I only like to color my hair
- 35:20every three to four months. So if I do this, is this going
- 35:23to be a problem. I don't like roots and I want to
- 35:26come in every three weeks. So what do I need to do?
- 35:29All of that ass. All those questions asked?
- 35:33I'm not sure. I don't blow dry my hair.
- 35:35I have calyx and I don't do this.
- 35:37How do I do? My Banks?
- 35:39There is so many ways, they have to educate you.
- 35:42If they don't know how to educate you, you're there.
- 35:45If you want to get that haircut, go ahead.
- 35:47But you are allowed to say, okay, I'm not I know what why
- 35:51don't you just wash and style my hair today or do a consultation?
- 35:55Don't even make an appointment for a color and cut first.
- 35:57Go for a consultation consoles. Patients should be always
- 36:00complimentary as is that if this Stylus is very confident of
- 36:04knowing what she does and is great, then do a consultation
- 36:08just call for a consultation 15 minutes consultation.
- 36:11This is my concerns, this is my needs.
- 36:15What can you get me? How can you help me once again?
- 36:19I think those are the really cool things about it and I think
- 36:23that once again being open to having that relationship with
- 36:26that person because when you don't, Really is a relationship
- 36:30building thing because even I know for me and I think even for
- 36:35you, trusting people with my hair.
- 36:38Yes. Is it's huge.
- 36:40And so I want to be able to have that if I asked question to feel
- 36:46like that person's going to engage with me.
- 36:48But not only that, he goes beyond, I don't know.
- 36:51I think you have to get really good.
- 36:53Not really good but I think you have to really work on the
- 36:55relationship because, you know, one of the things we love about
- 36:58going to you to is Harissa loves to travel.
- 37:01Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:03So you get it, you really get personal with you.
- 37:05Yes, so share with everybody. What did you do for the holiday?
- 37:11I do love to travel. We decided to go for our
- 37:15Christmas and our new year, and the new year and anniversary to
- 37:19Europe. So we went to England, Amsterdam
- 37:24and Paris. And, you know, it's interesting,
- 37:27I booked it all myself and I Everything myself but it was
- 37:31because of my clients. Hmm, their experiences they told
- 37:35me where to book this or what to do, download this and do this.
- 37:40So I love the fact, I have that kind of relationship with my
- 37:44clients. You have to have a relationship
- 37:46with your clients, I love the fact that they text me.
- 37:50Did you do this? Oh by the way let me send you
- 37:53this and this would be a good and you know those are the
- 37:57things that we have or I go. Oh, there.
- 37:59And I said, listen you when you go there, this is the hotel you
- 38:02want. This isn't like, it's all about
- 38:05a family. It's just like my clients are my
- 38:08family. Mmm, they are, they care.
- 38:10They care. What happens in back in my
- 38:12country, they text me too. Sometimes they takes me about an
- 38:16earthquake in Iran and I'm like, I don't know anything about it,
- 38:19let me call my mom. If that's how, that's how
- 38:22amazing they are. That's how much they.
- 38:25But that means I am amazing to them.
- 38:28You, that means I'm doing something.
- 38:29That they appreciate me. And as a stylist, you want to
- 38:32be. I didn't build this clientele by
- 38:36just cutting their hair. I build this clientele but
- 38:40conversations by getting knowing their family.
- 38:43Their kids coming to me. I have clients, I mean doing
- 38:47this for so many years and being in Salon, Bella since 2001,
- 38:50people got married and they had kids and the kids aren't called
- 38:54and I'm doing their hair. I'm still doing their her and
- 38:58that's the beauty of it. It.
- 38:59Yes, my hands heard my neck hurts but I can't give up.
- 39:02These are my family. I love seeing them, which is
- 39:05another thing. Your son got married.
- 39:07Yes. So did you do hair and stuff
- 39:10like that? Yeah, is a kind of like, oh,
- 39:14Bruce is coming. She's got to be the one to do
- 39:15the air or yeah, you know, it was interesting.
- 39:18Everybody was like, you really want to do their hair was like,
- 39:20if I don't do their hair, I will be like, frustrated for rest of
- 39:24my life. That I did not, do my son's
- 39:26writings hair and actually a couple gals.
- 39:29On the salon did go with me to do their hair.
- 39:32That's how it is. We grew all grew up together.
- 39:34So they're like, we're going with you to do the Bridesmaids
- 39:37hair and bright hair and stuff. Yes.
- 39:40Absolutely. And so in your, you just
- 39:43expanded? Yeah.
- 39:45So how many do you have now? He used to be with me.
- 39:49Five stylists full-time, stylist.
- 39:52And we are all booked and referral by clients and some of
- 39:56us are taking clients on that. I just expanded and I Added a
- 40:00retail place and it's another three stations, which I did hire
- 40:06a couple of people. They are building, they're
- 40:09really good at what they do one is Barber.
- 40:11And then the other one is actually a stylus that move from
- 40:15Canyon City. And she has a salon there but
- 40:18she just got married and moved to Denver a Colorado Springs.
- 40:20So she's building her clientele and I'm actually the third
- 40:24person, I'm actually going to do is someone that I can train
- 40:28them, what we know. I try to see we would love that.
- 40:33Try to see them getting successful with our knowledge
- 40:37and what we do and give it to someone else.
- 40:40Well, that's the other cool thing I think is, you know,
- 40:42whenever we pay it forward and we realized that when we
- 40:45remember where we start and then we know that that's where a lot
- 40:49of these people are and how do we get back and how do we help
- 40:53them get to that next level? So they can be as successful
- 40:56because it's not a competition know and that's the thing.
- 40:59Thing is interesting because that's one thing, different.
- 41:02My husband has his business that I have my business and he always
- 41:05tells me. Why do you tell them your
- 41:07secret? And it's like, it's not a secret
- 41:10talents. And if I can share it with
- 41:13hundred people, I will share it with hundred people that can
- 41:16actually do this thing and make more money or make the clients
- 41:22happy. Because, what am I going to do
- 41:24with this? When I die, I can't take it with
- 41:27you because it's a secret. Is Exactly it is for me is so
- 41:32joyful just sheet teach somebody, okay?
- 41:35When you do a root shadowing or when you do touch up in between
- 41:39you can do this. Yes.
- 41:40It's from all the knowledge and everything I've done.
- 41:44I came up with a little recipes of what to do in between when
- 41:48they want to go traveling and they don't want their hair color
- 41:50and they just have 10 minutes and do this.
- 41:52Yes, those are my recipes but I will love to train somebody else
- 41:58to do this kind of recipes. Because it will make them best
- 42:02at what they did. You know?
- 42:03That was the other thing that I like, you know because when we
- 42:06went to Cozumel, you know, when we had thought about going in
- 42:08and you said no don't do that. So, you know, it's not about the
- 42:12money. No.
- 42:13Because it was like, don't do that because you don't want your
- 42:16hair to bleed and all of the. So even giving people that
- 42:20information because, you know, when you color your hair with
- 42:22people if you've not done especially when you do the
- 42:25purples and the blues and the greens and all those those
- 42:28bleed. Yes.
- 42:29So yes, they green sun is like I do and a lot of times, sometimes
- 42:34they make a mistake, they make the appointment and they come in
- 42:37and, but they're going on this trip of three.
- 42:41In the Sun or flee, or Beach, or whatever.
- 42:45And I did want this platinum and I tell him, you know what, let's
- 42:50not do that. Let's wait.
- 42:51Yes, I'm not making that money at that time.
- 42:53Yes, I wasted two hours but I rather have that client happy
- 42:58because that client didn't know. Right?
- 43:00Did you know and I, it was my mistake not to ask I've her at,
- 43:04when I was making the employment, or knowing about
- 43:07their trick, or last-minute happened.
- 43:09And I think that's what's cool is because You know, that's one
- 43:12of the things we talked about a lot and I think you know, if
- 43:14we're going on a trip or something, we'll talk with you
- 43:16and just so you know, Chris has to clear a good chunk of her
- 43:20dated wife. Yes.
- 43:22Our hair takes forever six hours.
- 43:30Yeah, it is. It's a difficult thing and we so
- 43:32appreciate it. Yeah.
- 43:34Thank you. It's only sharing that's the
- 43:36problem child or here. That's what I know.
- 43:39That's what we start and end with her.
- 43:42Chris is in the metal so far. Oh, stop your seat.
- 43:45I'm just gonna go into tab. Press, I want something totally
- 43:48different. She goes, you better not even
- 43:49teeth. I actually text you guys, do you
- 43:52guys want the same thing? You want something different?
- 43:54Because I know I have to kind of like, okay, so I need you to
- 43:58come in at 6 a.m. now it's moved up in time.
- 44:06Before we end here, let's talk a little bit about Iran because I
- 44:09know there's a lot of stuff. Hang on there and I know you
- 44:12still have family there. How is that all going?
- 44:15It's sad. It's very sad.
- 44:17It's been happening. Two strikes and protesting has
- 44:21been going on over four months. Now, they have killed over
- 44:26thousands and thousands of young people.
- 44:30Young people men, women kids and the whole thing is about woman,
- 44:37freedom and life. That's what it is.
- 44:40Actually this woman Freedom, and they're not stopping.
- 44:45You know. This revolution has been going
- 44:47on for over 40 years, at 43 years, actually, the population
- 44:53of Iran 75 % of them are under 35 years old so and social media
- 44:59they see so they can understand why they have to live.
- 45:01This kind of Life of not being able to be young and enjoy their
- 45:08life is sad. That could be another.
- 45:11Time we can talk about all this but it is really it's really sad
- 45:16but they're not stopping. Hopefully we'll have more better
- 45:21results. They don't want the regime
- 45:23change and they keep going and keep going and you don't I think
- 45:28that's such an important thing is, you know, as women we should
- 45:33have the freedoms to be who we want to be in and do what we
- 45:39want to do and not be subjected to some rural that's out there,
- 45:44that's an arbitrary rule made by somebody who don't understand
- 45:48the impact on the individual. You know.
- 45:50And I think that that happens, it is so important when you're
- 45:54from another country that is Very controlled woman, and man,
- 46:01and you're here, and you don't realize how good you have it.
- 46:07You don't realize, how you could you have it till compare?
- 46:11What's out there? Beautiful educated people out
- 46:16there girls want men and they can do anything with that.
- 46:20So this town is a status is so wasted is so their talent.
- 46:26Everything is so wasted and it's so sad.
- 46:28Because Iran is a beautiful country.
- 46:31It is, it is very, it's yes. It is in Middle East, but it's
- 46:35nothing like Middle East, they don't that believe everything is
- 46:38totally different and their strength.
- 46:42Everything is very different than what they believed, is what
- 46:46you think about Middle East, and that's what they're fighting for
- 46:49it. That's why we they used to be
- 46:51Kings, it wasn't used to be presidents and, and vice
- 46:55president since of We used to be Kings of Iran and, and all that
- 47:00changed in a day with allies and promises that it was totally
- 47:06wrong. And, and it's sad to say that
- 47:09even the own right now, their own military, that Iran's
- 47:13military doesn't want to do killing people.
- 47:15So what did the government do? They hired assassins from other
- 47:19countries. So now they're, they're killing
- 47:22and raping. Because it's not their kid.
- 47:25It's not purely are people. So that's how sick the
- 47:30government is. And this is what we don't see.
- 47:32We don't realize how good we have it.
- 47:34Yeah and you know so everybody out there, putting out positive
- 47:39thoughts and energy towards Iran for their ass for their basic
- 47:43freedoms because it's freedoms that we really do have.
- 47:45I mean we're still working on more freedom here.
- 47:47Yeah, don't get me wrong. We're not where we need to be,
- 47:50but at least we're, we can continue to move in that.
- 47:52At least you have a voice. Yes.
- 47:54Yes, you know. Yes.
- 47:56Kids silver. Some people here.
- 47:58Some people don't, they don't have a voice.
- 47:59You have a voice there, guess what?
- 48:02You're either going to be in prison or your dad the next day.
- 48:06Yeah, so that's it. That's the beauty of, you know,
- 48:09somebody's going to hurt you know.
- 48:11Right now that's all they're doing.
- 48:13They're just having their voice and their dying, right.
- 48:16Is it important for you? Because you know, I mean even
- 48:18though you've been here since you were 13 to keep part of that
- 48:22culture. Absolutely because yeah.
- 48:24Farsi right? I do speak Farsi.
- 48:26Yes as my Heritage, I'm never going to give that up, good.
- 48:30My beliefs might be a little bit very different than what they
- 48:33believe, but my Heritage is the same.
- 48:37Even if I'm a US citizen, I still have all the Persian
- 48:43Heritage as well. Yeah, I was having percent,
- 48:47teach me parsley, just the bad words.
- 48:50We won't go there. She'll use them on me, any
- 48:56language? Isn't that what you do?
- 48:57You know what, they sound so much cooler than any other
- 49:02words? It's kind of like the little
- 49:04kid. You know you say that you you
- 49:06can talk to use all the vocabulary, they don't know
- 49:08anything. You know that one customer are
- 49:11and that's the only one they here in the whole thing and
- 49:14that's the only one they're going to repeat.
- 49:15Yeah. You know.
- 49:17Karissa I want to thank you so much and I'm Christie does we
- 49:21always talk about this and for everybody out there?
- 49:24Adding that something as it might seem simple like, getting
- 49:27your hair done or whatever, it's part of our identity.
- 49:30And when we do those things to embrace our identity and to not
- 49:35hide from it to not shy away from it.
- 49:37And I think that's what we do so much of the time.
- 49:39People say, well, I can't afford it and even if you can't go to
- 49:43the purposes of the world, it doesn't mean you can't go by
- 49:47that little product. That makes your hair feel a lot
- 49:49better or that makeup or whatever it is.
- 49:52Or sometimes it's getting out in the The Sun and just letting
- 49:55your hairline that way whatever it is.
- 49:58You know, we always talk on here about the importance of taking
- 50:00those baby steps in order to enhance that life that you have.
- 50:06And I agree with you. I think there's Beauty and
- 50:08everybody and we spend so much of our time, minimizing that and
- 50:13maximizing those things that we perceive as a negative.
- 50:18But usually, that comes because somebody else has told us that,
- 50:21yes, and that's the thing. Just remember, Be who you are
- 50:26and bring that beauty out and it could be easier than you.
- 50:30See somebody you want to be that person or that beauty, it's
- 50:35beautiful to be who you are. Yeah.
- 50:38Oh, what a great way to end. And if you're in the Colorado
- 50:42Springs area, please look up Parisa, a Salon Bella and we
- 50:46will have that information on our Facebook and on our website.
- 50:52So once again, everybody have a really great.
