- 0:30Hello, Tra - Travelers and Monster Catchers abound.
- 0:33I'm Stella Theris and this is the Monster Catchers
- 0:35Journal Podcast. Welcome back to another episode.
- 0:40Today's episode is about a glyph called Venombrim.
- 0:45If you ever hear the desert go quiet, run, or
- 0:49be very ready, the bleak fang wastes aren't just
- 0:54dry, they're cursed. Luna said the sand there
- 0:58doesn't move with the wind. It listens to it.
- 1:03Xenozglyph Ignizura wouldn't even step past the
- 1:06obsidian markers, so I went alone. Or maybe,
- 1:09like, felt him watching. I was crouched near
- 1:16a dried -up river, studying some claw marks when
- 1:19I heard a scritch -gritch behind me. I turned.
- 1:24Nothing. Then beside me, still nothing. I spun
- 1:28in a full circle. but all I saw was sand until
- 1:30it moved, a ripple in the earth like something
- 1:33slithering beneath it, and then he struck, half
- 1:36serpent, half scorpion, all furry. A massive
- 1:40body covered in obsidian -like scales, the upper
- 1:43half like a cobra, with a wide -finged hood flaring
- 1:47as he hissed, the lower half scuttled with armored
- 1:51legs, and from his spine rose a long, curved
- 1:55scorpion tail, dripping with glowing green venom.
- 1:58His eyes were twin pits, or lime fire, and his
- 2:03forked tongue split the wind in eerie silence.
- 2:09Finn and Brim wasn't forged by some grand judgment
- 2:12or cursed fate. He simply is, born from the agent
- 2:16bond between scorpion and serpent, two of the
- 2:19desert's most deadly hunters. Deep beneath the
- 2:21sands of the bleak fang waste, where the sun
- 2:24bleeds fire and shadows shift like whispers,
- 2:27their essences merged not by choice, not by design,
- 2:32but as natural force of the desert itself. Half
- 2:37serpent, half scorpion, he moved with the cold
- 2:40inevitability of nature's silent killers. His
- 2:43obsidian scales shimmered like cracked glass
- 2:45in the sun, his armored legs carrying him swiftly
- 2:49across the shifting dunes, and his venom drips
- 2:52with the primal power of survival. I barely dodged
- 2:56his first strike. He vanished underground instantly,
- 2:59like ink soaking into parchment, but his presence,
- 3:01I could feel it. He was stalking, studying, hunting.
- 3:09Venombrim was not shaped by fate or bound by
- 3:12judgment. He simply exists a living force born
- 3:15from the ancient intertwining of two of the desert's
- 3:19deadliest predators, the scorpion and the serpent.
- 3:22Beneath the endless dunes of the bleak thing,
- 3:24waste, where the sun's heat blurs the horizon
- 3:27and shadows twist like whispers of forgotten
- 3:29secrets. Their essence is fused, not by will,
- 3:34but by the raw, untamed power of nature itself.
- 3:38and Naberans, who kind of breeded him for that
- 3:41fact, and we'll tell you about that at the end.
- 3:44His form was a haunting blend of lethal grace
- 3:48and armored menace. The upper half, sleek and
- 3:51serpentine, moved with cold precision, each scale
- 3:56catching the harsh light from fractured obsidian.
- 4:01His lower half was an unforgiving sc - Scorpion,
- 4:08legs clicking sharply over the sand, a curved
- 4:12tail arching high and dripping with venom that
- 4:16glowed, an eerie green, nature's silent promise
- 4:19of death. The first strike came like a flash,
- 4:23sudden and unseen, I barely slipped aside, heart
- 4:26pounding as the earth beneath me rippled, swallowing
- 4:29him whole like a spilled ink and parchment. But
- 4:33even when out of sight his presence lingered,
- 4:36a weight in the air, a watchful hunger, he was
- 4:39more than a beast, he was a hunter, a shadow
- 4:41stalking through the silence, watching, waiting.
- 4:48The desert held its breath. Around me the sand
- 4:51lay still, untouched by even the faintest breeze.
- 4:55It was as if the world itself dared not disturb
- 4:59the space where venom brim moved. Every grain
- 5:02seemed charged with quiet menace, vibrating with
- 5:06the pulse of something ancient and relentless.
- 5:11I could feel his gaze, cold and unblinking. Sliding
- 5:15beneath the surface the way he melded it with
- 5:18the earth was a natural and extension of the
- 5:25desert's will, or perhaps its wrath made flesh.
- 5:29But there was something else beneath the venom,
- 5:31in the threat, a raw, untamed survival, not cruel,
- 5:35but necessity. I stayed low, every muscle taunt.
- 5:43Whispering to myself not to panic, the sand rippled
- 5:46again, a soft, sinister motion, and then he emerged
- 5:49towering and deadly. His hood flared wide, revealing
- 5:53those twin rows of sharp fangs, venom dripping
- 5:55like liquid poison into the thirsty sand. His
- 6:01tail arched over his back, glowing faintly, a
- 6:03reminder of the silent danger that lurked just
- 6:09a breath away. Venom brims circled slow and deliberate,
- 6:13eyes never leaving me. I sensed no hate, no anger,
- 6:17only unshakable certainty. of a creature who
- 6:22had existed long before I ever set foot here.
- 6:27He was part of this place, born of its heat,
- 6:29its silence, its shadows. For a long moment we
- 6:32simply regarded each other, then as if deciding
- 6:34I was no threat, his tail lowered. Not in defeat,
- 6:38but in weary acceptance. The desert excelled.
- 6:42Venombrim vanished beneath the sand once more,
- 6:45but this time I knew he would watch. Always watch.
- 6:52I didn't reach for weapons, spells, or even a
- 6:55glyphid. Instead, I breathed slowly, steadying
- 7:01my heart, and grounding myself in the moment.
- 7:05Patience was my only ally. Venombrin's eyes never
- 7:09left me, but I held my ground. No sudden moves,
- 7:12no challenge, just quiet presence like a desert.
- 7:17Sorry, like the desert itself, endless, unmoving
- 7:21and unyielding. Minutes stretched, feeling like
- 7:26hours as the sand around us held its breath.
- 7:30Sorry, I keep messing up on this story, and I'm
- 7:34really sorry. May the moons of Nibiru, all three
- 7:40of them, shine their beautiful light down on
- 7:43you, along with the twin suns. Anyways. Then,
- 7:50ever so slowly, the ripple beneath my feet began
- 7:52to settle. The venomous tail that had hovered
- 7:56like a thunder cloud over my head dripped, brushing
- 8:01the earth softly. I whispered barely audible.
- 8:07You don't have to be alone. The venom glow dimmed.
- 8:10The tension in the air eased. Venom brim rose.
- 8:17slowly and fully, scales catching the light of
- 8:22the twin suns and the three moons of Nibiru.
- 8:26But his stance was less threat and more curiosity.
- 8:30Then with a slow, deliberate motion, he coiled
- 8:33around the circle I traced in the sand, a containment
- 8:36woven from whisper runes and calm resolve. The
- 8:41glyphs pulsed once, Black and green flames licking
- 8:48the edges, sealing the boundary. Venom Brim didn't
- 8:52resist, not because he was caught, but because
- 8:54he chose to stay. In that moment I understood
- 8:57patience wasn't just a tactic, it was a language,
- 9:00a promise. And Venom Brim's silent, deadly, eternal
- 9:05had accepted it. After that long encounter, I
- 9:11needed to clear my head and somewhere to rest
- 9:14where the desert's oppressive silence didn't
- 9:17weigh so heavy. I found refuge at an old desert
- 9:20restaurant. A weathered shack perched on the
- 9:24edge of the bleak fang waste. The sign above
- 9:27the door was faded, but inside, the warm glow
- 9:30of lanterns and the hum of quiet conversation
- 9:33felt like a world away. I slid onto a rough hewn
- 9:39stool and scanned the menu, intrigued by the
- 9:42strange, unfamiliar dishes. Well, not very unfamiliar,
- 9:46because carnivora plant is very well known. There's
- 9:50a whole ritual. We talked about it in an earlier
- 9:53episode. But there's a whole ritual for it. But
- 9:57anyways, grilled carnivora plant, I muttered
- 10:00to myself, imagining the fierce desert flora
- 10:04that thrived here. and a Nabeeran salad, said
- 10:09to be a refreshing mix of bitter desert herbs,
- 10:12spiced with wild fruit from the Oasis. I ordered
- 10:17both. When the plate arrived, the Garnivora plant
- 10:20was charred just right. It's tough, leafy tendrils
- 10:24cracked with smoky bitterness, but beneath that,
- 10:28a surprising sweetness that hinted at the harsh
- 10:30environment it grew in, the salad was crispy,
- 10:33tangy, and oddly calming, a perfect contrast
- 10:37to the desert's relentless heat. As I ate my
- 10:41thoughts drifted back to Vinnumbrim, the silent
- 10:44sentinel now bound to the sanctuary, the desert
- 10:48was full of secrets, some old as time itself,
- 10:51but sometimes in the quiet between the dunes,
- 10:54you could find unexpected moments of peace. I
- 10:57let the warmth of the restaurant settle over
- 10:59me, a small island of comfort in the endless
- 11:02sands. As I sat there savoring the strange flavors,
- 11:08the creak of the door drew my attention. A boy
- 11:10stepped inside, tall and lean, with short shaggy
- 11:13black hair that fell just enough to shadow his
- 11:16forehead. His eyes were the color of the deepest
- 11:19ocean, dark, endless, and sharp, with a hint
- 11:24of mischief. Without hesitation, he slid onto
- 11:28the stool beside me. He leaned in close, a confident
- 11:32smirk tugging at his lips, and placed his hands
- 11:34gently beneath my chin. He tilted my face towards
- 11:37this, forcing me to meet those piercing eyes.
- 11:40"'You're a jabili of a girl,' he said, voice
- 11:43low and cocky. I didn't bother explaining. I'm
- 11:48from Nibiru. I know exactly what that means."
- 11:50His grin faltered just a little, surprised I
- 11:53wasn't impressed. Well then, he said, eyes narrowing
- 11:57playfully. Guess you're used to sweet talk. I
- 12:02met his gaze evenly. I'm not really interested
- 12:05in learning about you at all. My heart is spoken
- 12:07for. He laughed, clearly amused, and maybe a
- 12:10little intrigued. Who may I ask is a special
- 12:18guy who holds your heart, the boy asked, a slight
- 12:21grin tugging at his lips. Professor Lang, from
- 12:24the Academy, I replied without hesitation. He
- 12:27laughed, amused. That blowhard? I don't think
- 12:31he's got a chance at stealing the attention of
- 12:33a beauty like you. Before I could react, he reached
- 12:36out and tried to drag me from the restaurant.
- 12:39Hey! I protested, struggling against his grip,
- 12:42but just then Lang appeared in the doorway, sharp
- 12:44-eyed and authoritative. What do you think you're
- 12:47doing, Malice Bogar? Lang demanded, stepping
- 12:52forward. The boy smirked unfazed, taking my new
- 12:55girlfriend with me. I'm not your girlfriend!
- 12:57I shouted, yanking free. The tension thickened
- 13:00in the cramped space. The desert night pressed
- 13:04in around us like a held breath. Lang and Bogar
- 13:11stood mere feet apart, their eyes locked in a
- 13:14fierce battle of wills. The air between them
- 13:17crackled with unspoken history and raw determination.
- 13:20You won't steal what's rightfully mine this time,
- 13:24Lang. Bogar spat, voice low and venomous. Lang's
- 13:28gaze didn't waver, burning with quiet fury. She's
- 13:31not an object to be claimed or owned. And besides,
- 13:35he added firmly, she doesn't love you. Bogar's
- 13:38smirk twisted, but there was a flicker of uncertainty
- 13:41beneath his bravado. I watched the two men heart
- 13:45-pounding, not just from fear, but from the weight
- 13:48of the clash. This wasn't just about me. It was
- 13:51about something far older and darker between
- 13:53them. Huh! Bogar scoffs, stepping closer. Doesn't
- 14:01love me. You've always had a way of convincing
- 14:04people you're the better man, Lang. But deep
- 14:08down, you know I'm the one who can give her more
- 14:11than lectures and dusty books. Lang's expression
- 14:14hardened. What you call giving is nothing but
- 14:17taking. You've never cared about anyone but yourself,
- 14:21Bogar. She deserves freedom, not chains disguised
- 14:24as charms. Bogar's grin faded to a cold sneer.
- 14:28Freedom? You think running around hunting glyphs
- 14:31and playing hero is freedom? That life will chew
- 14:35her up and spit her out. and you think locking
- 14:38her away at your side would be better." Lang's
- 14:41voice was low, but every word landed like a blow.
- 14:47Bogar tilted his head, eyes flickering toward
- 14:49me. She could have comfort, safety, a man who
- 14:53knows her worth. I do know her worth, Lang said
- 14:56sharply, which is why I'd never trap her into
- 14:59thinking she owes me her heart. Bogar let out
- 15:04a bitter laugh. Always the noble one, but nobility
- 15:08doesn't keep people by your side, Lang. It just
- 15:12makes them easier to still. Lang's jaw tightened,
- 15:15you can't still what doesn't belong to you in
- 15:17the first place. Bogar's eyes darkened, the smug
- 15:22amusement bleeding into something sharper. Maybe
- 15:25not, he said, voice dropping to near growl, but
- 15:30I can take what I want. Before I could move,
- 15:33his hand shot out, fingers curling around my
- 15:35wrist. With bruising force, he ganks me toward
- 15:39him, his grip unyielding. The scrape of my stole
- 15:42against the floor cut through the low murmur
- 15:44of the restaurant. "'Let her go, Bogar,' Ling
- 15:48said, his voice calm but edged with steel. Bogar
- 15:52smirked, holding me just a little tighter, as
- 15:54if testing how far he could push before Ling
- 15:56broke. "'Or what, Professor? You'll lecture me
- 16:00into submission?' In a single step, Lang closed
- 16:05the distance between them as Gaze locked on Bogard's
- 16:10like two predators circling the same kill. You've
- 16:14got three seconds to release her. Bogard didn't
- 16:17move, his grip only tightened. One, Lang's tone
- 16:21was like the crack of stone under pressure. Two,
- 16:25my heart pounded in my ears before three could
- 16:29leave Lang's lips. Bogar made the mistake of
- 16:32pulling me closer. That's when Lang struck. Before
- 16:37Bogar could even process a third count, Lang's
- 16:41hand shot forward, lightning quick, but unnervingly
- 16:47precise. His fingers locked around Bogar's wrist
- 16:50with surgical accuracy. twisting just enough
- 16:54to send a jolt of pain shooting up his arm. At
- 16:57the same time, Lang stepped in, using his own
- 16:59body weight to break Bogard's balance without
- 17:02throwing a single wild motion. The shift was
- 17:06sudden, explosive in speed, yet every movement
- 17:09was deliberate, controlled as if Lang had calculated
- 17:12it before the thought even formed in Bogard's
- 17:15mind. Bogard gasped and released me instantly,
- 17:19and instinctively, stumbling back a half a step,
- 17:23but catching himself before he fell. His other
- 17:26hand twitched forward towards his side, whether
- 17:31for a weapon or pride, I couldn't tell, but Lang's
- 17:34stance made it clear one wrong move and Bogar
- 17:37wouldn't get a second chance. Touch her again,
- 17:41Lang said evenly, and you'll learn exactly how
- 17:44fast I can end this. For the first time, Bogar
- 17:47smirk faltered. Bogar's hesitation didn't last
- 17:52long. His pride wouldn't let him walk away without
- 17:54proving something. With a snarl, he lunged, swinging
- 18:00his sharp right hook at Lang's jaw. Lang moved
- 18:04like water. He sidestepped the blow, his forearm
- 18:08snapping up to deflect, then drove his elbow
- 18:11hard into Bogar's ribs. The air left Bogar in
- 18:15a sharp grunt, but he came back fast, aiming
- 18:19a kick at Ling's leg. The clash became a blur,
- 18:22Ling's strikes crisp and exact, Bogar's wild
- 18:25but fueled by sheer force. Chairs scraped and
- 18:32toppled, a plate shattered against the floor,
- 18:36and startled whispers filled the restaurant.
- 18:41Bogar Kotling's shoulder once hard enough to
- 18:44stagger him a step, but Lang flowed right back
- 18:48in it, his hand locking on Bogar's collar. Before
- 18:53slamming him against the wall, the impact rattled
- 18:55the old wood, dust sifting from the rafters.
- 19:01Pinned and breathless, Bogar's smirk returned,
- 19:03thin but sharp. Enjoy your victory, Lang, he
- 19:08rasped. But the next time you're not around,
- 19:11she's mine. Lang's grip tightened just enough
- 19:14to drive the point home before releasing him.
- 19:17Bogar straightened his coat, shot me one last
- 19:21lingering glance, and pushed past the crowd,
- 19:23disappearing into the desert night. The restaurant
- 19:26seemed to excel all at once. Lang turned to me,
- 19:30his voice calm. You alright? Lang's gaze softened
- 19:36as the last of the onlookers settled back into
- 19:38their meals. Uh, yeah," I said, brushing a bit
- 19:44of sand from my sleeve. Sorry you had to go through
- 19:47that. Not at all, Lang replied, his tone carrying
- 19:50an edge of steel beneath the calm. I'm only sorry
- 19:54he tried to harm you. I met his gaze, seeing
- 19:57no trace of hesitation, only a quiet, unshakable
- 20:00certainty that, if Bogar tried again, Lang would
- 20:03be there. The air between us held the remnants
- 20:06of the fight. The faint echo of Bogar's prom
- 20:10is still ringing in the back of my mind. leaning
- 20:37back slightly. Black and green, like wildfire
- 20:41in the sand, there's only one creature in the
- 20:43black fang waste that carries that kind of venom.
- 20:47His tone was matter of fact, but there was a
- 20:49glint in his eyes that told me he understood
- 20:52exactly what bringing venom brine into the sanctuary
- 20:55meant. Ready to admit you're in love with me
- 21:01now, Fang asked, his voice just light enough
- 21:04to make it unclear whether He was teasing or
- 21:07testing me. Heat surged into my face so fast,
- 21:11it was almost dizzying. I could feel the flush
- 21:14spreading, and if anyone had walked in right
- 21:18then, they might have thought I'd been boiled
- 21:20alive, lobster red, just perfect. I tried to
- 21:23look away, but Lang was watching me with that
- 21:25calm, steady gaze that made lying pointless.
- 21:32Hey, don't tease me, I complained. I crossed
- 21:36my arms in what I hoped was a stern jester, though
- 21:40my burning cheeks probably ruined the effect.
- 21:43Lang's mouth curbed into a faint smile, not mocking
- 21:46but warm. Not teasing, he said, just wondering
- 21:49when you'll admit what we both already know.
- 21:51I scoffed, trying to focus on my drink instead,
- 21:54of the way his voice seemed to settle into my
- 21:57chest. You're impossible. And yet, Lang said
- 22:00softly, you haven't told me to leave. I smiled
- 22:07despite myself, shaking my head, and that's how
- 22:11we spent the rest of the night, just the two
- 22:14of us, tucked away in that little desert restaurant,
- 22:17the hum of quiet conversation around us, the
- 22:19warm scent of grilled carnivora plant in the
- 22:22air, the steady presence of laying across the
- 22:25table, for a while the bleak fang waste, bogar's
- 22:30threat, and even venom brim's watchful coils.
- 22:34fade it into the background. There was only the
- 22:37clink of glasses, the low murmur of our voices,
- 22:41and the kind of silence that felt safe. And that,
- 22:45my friends, is the episode for this week. This
- 22:50has been the Monster Catchers Journal podcast,
- 22:52and I hope to see you next time. May Nibiru shine
- 22:56its beautiful light down on you. Goodbye now.
