- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, everyone, and a very happy
- 0:18Friday to you. You are listening to Connecting
- 0:20the Dots. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. We are coming
- 0:23to you live from the Snarful Solutions Group
- 0:25headquarters right here in Sacramento. It is
- 0:28Friday, January 30th, 2026. We finally made it
- 0:33to the end of the month. We did, barely. Though,
- 0:36looking out the window this morning, I'm not
- 0:38sure I can see the end of the driveway. It is
- 0:40thick out there. For our locals, just a heads
- 0:42up, we are under a dense fog advisory until noon
- 0:45today, so, you know. Take it slow out there.
- 0:48Definitely. But honestly, a little fog feels
- 0:50like a luxury when you look at the national map.
- 0:52Oh, absolutely. The East Coast is getting hammered.
- 0:54Yeah. A massive Arctic blast is moving through.
- 0:57We're talking record low temperatures all the
- 0:59way down to the Gulf Coast. And a big snowstorm
- 1:01is brewing for the Carolinas and Virginia this
- 1:03weekend. So if you're out there, please stay
- 1:05safe. It's a chaotic end to the month, for sure.
- 1:08And the financial markets, well. They seem to
- 1:11be feeling that same energy. A very mixed bag.
- 1:13The Dow managed to close up yesterday, but just
- 1:17barely. About 0 .27%, sitting at 49 ,071. And
- 1:21the S &P. That dipped a little. Down 0 .13 %
- 1:25to 6 ,969. Okay, and for our crypto watchers
- 1:30not a great start to the day bitcoins pulled
- 1:32back trading down almost 2 % It's having right
- 1:35around 82 maybe $83 ,000 so everyone's kind of
- 1:38holding their breath seems that way well if all
- 1:40that has you feeling a little sluggish We've
- 1:43got just the thing we are really thrilled to
- 1:46welcome a new partner to the show Strong coffee,
- 1:49you know, I was skeptical about this one when
- 1:51you hear instant coffee You don't exactly think
- 1:53premium you think of sad brown water exactly,
- 1:57but this is completely different It actually
- 1:59tastes like a real traditional brew, but the
- 2:01real kicker is what's inside, right? It's packed
- 2:05with 15 grams of protein MCT's and Adaptogens
- 2:09like ashwagandha so you get this clean sustained
- 2:11energy. No jitters. No crash just focus It's
- 2:15a great way to upgrade your morning. Just head
- 2:17over to strongcoffeecompany .com and use our
- 2:19promo code SNARFUL, that's S -N -A -R -F -U -L,
- 2:23for 20 % off your entire purchase. It is a total
- 2:26game changer. All right, we've got our coffee.
- 2:29Let's get into the SNARFUL Tech article, Report
- 2:31the Morningstar. And today it's really all about
- 2:35one company. The fruit company. The fruit company.
- 2:38Apple dropped their Q1 earnings and uh... Calling
- 2:42it a beat feels like a bit of an understatement.
- 2:44Oh, demolition is probably a better word. They
- 2:46just crushed Wall Street's expectations. Revenue
- 2:49came in at $143 .8 billion. Which is up 16 %
- 2:53year over year. Right. And analysts were expecting
- 2:55something like $5 billion less than that. That's
- 2:58a huge miss for the analysts. And the engine
- 3:01behind all this, it has to be the iPhone 17,
- 3:04right? It is. iPhone revenue alone jumped 23%,
- 3:07over $85 billion. The new lineup is just flying
- 3:11off the shelves. Okay, but this is where it gets
- 3:13interesting because we've spent months hearing
- 3:14analysts worry about China. Right, the narrative
- 3:17was sales are slowing. Competition is fierce.
- 3:21Nationalism is hurting them. And then what happened?
- 3:22And then Apple just drops the mic. Sales in Greater
- 3:25China didn't just grow. They exploded, up 38
- 3:28% to $25 .5 billion. 38 %? In a market that's
- 3:33supposed to be saturated? How? Well, two things.
- 3:37One, a record number of people upgraded their
- 3:39old iPhones. But the really important number,
- 3:43the one that has competitors sweating, is the
- 3:46switchers. People coming from Android exactly
- 3:48right double digit growth in people switching
- 3:51from Android to iPhone in China It just completely
- 3:55flips the script on that whole narrative It really
- 3:57suggests that the premium product is winning
- 4:00regardless of all the geopolitical noise its
- 4:02flight to quality for sure but selling that many
- 4:05phones Comes with a you know a physical reality
- 4:09check you have to actually build them right and
- 4:11that's the friction point Cook was pretty open
- 4:13about it They're constrained on chips from TSMC,
- 4:17and there are some serious shortages of memory
- 4:19chips from Samsung and SK Hynix. Which makes
- 4:21sense. All the data centers for the AI boom are
- 4:24eating up the high bandwidth memory. It's a resource
- 4:26war. So while demand is through the roof, actually
- 4:29getting the phones into people's hands might
- 4:30be a little tougher this quarter. Now, before
- 4:33we move on, there was another note that came
- 4:34out with the earnings. A bit more of a somber
- 4:37one. There was. Amidst all this, CEO Tim Cook
- 4:41sent a memo to employees about the recent events
- 4:44in Minneapolis with ICE agents. It's been a very
- 4:47tense situation there. It has. He said he was
- 4:50heartbroken by what happened and mentioned he'd
- 4:52spoken directly with President Trump to call
- 4:54for de -escalation. It really just shows the
- 4:57kind of tightrope these modern CEOs have to walk.
- 5:00For sure. Part business leader, part diplomat.
- 5:02Okay, so story number one. The iPhone is back
- 5:05in a huge way. and China is buying. And the only
- 5:09thing holding them back is how fast they can
- 5:11build them. All right, let's move to our second
- 5:13story. Because you don't just buy the phone,
- 5:15you use it. And that brings us to the ecosystem.
- 5:18The sticky factor. This is Apple's superpower.
- 5:21Services revenue hit 30 billion dollars this
- 5:24quarter, up 14 percent. 30 billion just from
- 5:27services. That's bigger than many Fortune 500
- 5:30companies entire annual revenue. And the scale
- 5:32is just. It's hard to even comprehend. They gave
- 5:36us a new number for their active installed base.
- 5:39What is it now? It has officially surpassed two
- 5:41and a half billion devices. Wow, 2 .5 billion.
- 5:46That's a lot of screens. And once you have the
- 5:48screen, you subscribe, you download, you watch.
- 5:52Speaking of watching, Apple TV is really having
- 5:55a moment. A big one. Viewership jumped 36 % in
- 5:59December alone. I think I know why you're excited
- 6:01about that. Oh, you know it. Ted Lasso is officially
- 6:04coming back for season four this summer. I thought
- 6:06they wrapped that up perfectly. But I guess you
- 6:10can't keep a good coach down. Never. And it's
- 6:12not just that. The drama Pluribus is doing huge
- 6:15numbers and they just got a best picture nomination
- 6:18for that Brad Pitt F1 movie. Which is huge validation
- 6:21for a streamer. But this is the flywheel effect
- 6:23we always talk about. You buy the iPhone, then
- 6:25you sign up for Apple One to watch the shows.
- 6:28Then you need iCloud storage. And suddenly you're
- 6:30paying them every month forever. And now they're
- 6:32making the core of that even smarter. I saw the
- 6:34news about the Google partnership. Yes, this
- 6:36is a big strategic shift. They're partnering
- 6:38with Google to use the Gemini model to power
- 6:41parts of Siri. So they're finally admitting they
- 6:44need help with AI. It seems like they're prioritizing
- 6:47user experience over pride, you know? Use the
- 6:49best tech available to make Siri better, which
- 6:51keeps people locked into the ecosystem. Which
- 6:54is a perfect segue to our third story. Because
- 6:57while they're partnering on the software brains,
- 7:01they're buying up tech to change how we physically
- 7:04interact with it. This is the sci -fi part of
- 7:06the show. My favorite story of the day. Mine
- 7:09too. Apple just made its second largest acquisition
- 7:12ever. They spent about two billion dollars on
- 7:15an Israeli AI startup called QII. Two billion!
- 7:20That's a massive bet, so what do they do? Silence
- 7:22speech interpretation. Okay, explain that. So
- 7:25the technology analyzes the micro -movements
- 7:27in your facial muscles to understand what you're
- 7:29saying without you making a sound. Wait, wait,
- 7:31so I just mouth the words and it knows what I'm
- 7:33saying? Exactly. It's like super -powered lip
- 7:35reading. They also specialize in cleaning up
- 7:37audio in really noisy places. Let's untack this.
- 7:40First, the Who. The founder is a guy named Eviyad
- 7:43Mazels. That name should ring a bell. I feel
- 7:46like I know that name. He founded a company called
- 7:48PrimeSense. Apple bought them back in 2013. Ah.
- 7:53That became FaceSight. Ringo! So this guy has
- 7:56already fundamentally changed how we use our
- 7:57phones. Now he's back to do it again. Okay, so
- 8:00the application here. Think about... AirPods.
- 8:04Right. I'm on a crowded train. I want to dictate
- 8:06a reply. Right now I have to be that guy talking
- 8:09into the air. Which no one wants to be. It's
- 8:11so awkward. No one. But with this tech, I just
- 8:14mouth it. Nonverbal discussions. You can be in
- 8:17a quiet library or at a loud concert. It doesn't
- 8:20matter. The system reads your face. This connects
- 8:23directly to the Vision Pro headset, too. 100%.
- 8:25You don't want to be shouting commands when you're
- 8:27wearing a headset. You want it to feel, you know,
- 8:30almost telepathic. This gets us closer. It's
- 8:33also a direct shot at the competition, right?
- 8:35Metta with their Ray -Ban glasses. For sure.
- 8:38If Apple can solve the input problem. If they
- 8:41can make talking to your AI not socially awkward
- 8:44because you don't actually have to talk, that's
- 8:47a huge advantage. It takes the weirdness out
- 8:49of wearable tech. And it locks you into that
- 8:51hardware ecosystem even tighter. So, to recap
- 8:53the morning. Apple's making more money than ever.
- 8:56China loves the iPhone. Ted Lasso is coming back
- 8:58to keep us subscribed. And soon we'll all be
- 9:01silently mouthing commands to our glasses like
- 9:03we're wizards. It is a brave new world. It certainly
- 9:06is. Now, before we wrap things up, we have one
- 9:08more partner to shout out. This one is for all
- 9:11the golfers listening. We're talking about Skone.
- 9:13Skone makes these premium golf shoes that, and
- 9:16I'm saying this as someone who struggles with
- 9:18golf fashion, they actually look really good.
- 9:21They do. You usually have to choose between performance
- 9:23and style, but these really do both. They're
- 9:26comfortable, they look sharp, and they perform
- 9:28on the course. So if you're planning to hit the
- 9:30links, you need to check them out. Go to scony
- 9:32.com and you can use that same promo code, SNARFL,
- 9:36to get 15 % off your entire purchase. A good
- 9:39deal. So looking at everything we talked about
- 9:42today, what's the one big takeaway? I think it's
- 9:45convergence. We talk about hardware and software,
- 9:47but the lines are blurring completely. The success
- 9:50of the iPhone, the growth in services, this Q
- 9:53.II purchase. It's all about creating one seamless,
- 9:57almost invisible experience. The companies that
- 10:00nail that invisible integration are the ones
- 10:02that are going to win. And right now, Apple seems
- 10:05to be winning pretty hard. $143 billion, says
- 10:09you're right. I'm still stuck on that silent
- 10:12speech thing, though. I feel like my wife would
- 10:14love that feature for me. Just mouth the words.
- 10:17Don't actually say them. I think a lot of spouses
- 10:19would pay extra for that. You are probably right.
- 10:22Well, that is it for us today. Thank you so much
- 10:24for starting your morning with us. Stay warm,
- 10:27watch out for that fog, and have a great weekend.
