- 0:00Speaker 1: Progressive presents forrest metaphors about bundling your home on auto
- 0:04Speaker 1: and sports. Three goals is a hat trick, And when
- 0:06Speaker 1: you bundle your home and auto with Progressive, you get
- 0:09Speaker 1: a hat trick of great savings and around the clock protection.
- 0:11Speaker 1: So you might be thinking, wait, that's two things. A
- 0:13Speaker 1: hat trick is three, But in this metaphor, great savings
- 0:16Speaker 1: counts as two goals, and so does around the clock protection,
- 0:19Speaker 1: so it's like four goals and that's more than three.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's basic math. Forest metaphors by Progressive, Bundle and Protect Today,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Progressive couentalty in Trance Company, and I feel gets discompt

- 1:13Speaker 1: to you by the AD Council. My next guest is
- 1:16Speaker 1: an industry decision maker. Her name is Sonny Hickman. She's
- 1:19Speaker 1: the vice president of Marketing and Sales for the Hall
- 1:22Speaker 1: of Globetrotters. You know the Hall of Gold Trotters, the
- 1:24Speaker 1: world famous Hall and Growth Trotters. They've been showcaseding iconic
- 1:28Speaker 1: talents and a hundred and twenty four countries and territories
- 1:31Speaker 1: on six continents as they were founded in six nineteen
- 1:34Speaker 1: twenty six. Sonny Hickman is the creative powerhouse behind the
- 1:38Speaker 1: hallan Globe Trotters Twitter Twitter one relaunch orchestrating a team
- 1:42Speaker 1: of handpicked specialists. She used the she ushered the iconic
- 1:46Speaker 1: brand where renewed focus on black culture, ball of life,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and social justice. Making decisions like that to a legendary
- 1:53Speaker 1: brand does not come without proper planning. Sunday is on
- 1:56Speaker 1: the show to discuss her career and these successful brand
- 1:59Speaker 1: changes to the hollanm Loble Trotters. Please work with the
- 2:01Speaker 1: money making conversations, Sunny Hickman, thank you. I'm excited to
- 2:07Speaker 1: be here. So I'd like to believe I laid it
- 2:09Speaker 1: out pretty proper about the you know, iconic, you the
- 2:13Speaker 1: big those big words, you know, with a brand that
- 2:15Speaker 1: I grew up on. Because I'm gonna go all the
- 2:18Speaker 1: way back to six. Why was the Harlem Globe Trotter started?
- 2:23Speaker 1: M hmm. The Holland Gold Trotters were were started to
- 2:27Speaker 1: really bring this U celebrate when basketball bring the style
- 2:32Speaker 1: of play UM to the country. UM in a time
- 2:36Speaker 1: where UM, the Harlem renaissance was just permeating around the
- 2:42Speaker 1: country and there was this style of play that came
- 2:45Speaker 1: from these African American ballers that UM, a gentleman named
- 2:49Speaker 1: Abe safer Stein had the fortitude to say, people need
- 2:52Speaker 1: to see this and experience it. So that's what started
- 2:55Speaker 1: the hard Gold tral Well, so I was I'm assuming
- 2:58Speaker 1: when you say that it was tied to the we
- 3:01Speaker 1: you know, denial of the black athlete for participating in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the white sport that they desire, and so they were
- 3:07Speaker 1: left with UM just playing with against themselves, like the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Negro League, you know, and and a lot of leads
- 3:13Speaker 1: that were developed out there. The most famous is the
- 3:15Speaker 1: Negro League because of baseball and the Jackie Robinson, But
- 3:17Speaker 1: there were other situations out there in football and basketball.
- 3:21Speaker 1: They were not publicized. I guess you can say in
- 3:24Speaker 1: a way, the Harlem Globetrotters was with basketball version of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the Negro League. Is that correcting the assessing that it is?
- 3:32Speaker 1: And there were other, um, you know, black basketball teams
- 3:36Speaker 1: that were playing during that time, you know when they
- 3:38Speaker 1: weren't able to play you know in the NBA when
- 3:41Speaker 1: they you know, before the NBA was integrated. Um, I
- 3:44Speaker 1: think the Harlem Globetrotters really were the team that put
- 3:48Speaker 1: it to a whole another level and brought integration into
- 3:52Speaker 1: the NBA. Uh little known factors. They Harlem Globe Trotters
- 3:57Speaker 1: would actually play a game before the NBA game back
- 4:04Speaker 1: back in the day, and as it would turn out,
- 4:07Speaker 1: is more people would come to the Harlem Globetrotters game
- 4:11Speaker 1: then the NBA. So then they switched. The NBA team
- 4:15Speaker 1: would play first and then the Globetrotters would play afterwards.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Because they were the ones who were drawing the fans, right, people,
- 4:22Speaker 1: people packing up their clothes leave. I got my snacks
- 4:27Speaker 1: I see when I came to see Okay, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I know we all people who are Sonny who's hearing
- 4:33Speaker 1: this end? If you're talking to Sonny Hickman, the vice
- 4:35Speaker 1: president of marketing and Sales for the Hall and Globetrotters.
- 4:38Speaker 1: When we talk about it, I can I can have
- 4:40Speaker 1: vivid memories of watching ABC Wild Worlds and sports, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: just laughing at these guys who had incredible skill and
- 4:48Speaker 1: making amazing shots. When did the when were the When
- 4:50Speaker 1: were the Holland Globe Trotters introduced into your life? And
- 4:54Speaker 1: when they were introduced into your life as a as
- 4:56Speaker 1: a as a team, as a youngster, What effect did
- 4:59Speaker 1: they have phone the Harlem Globe Chotters have on you?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Oh wonderful questions. So I was introduced to the Harlem
- 5:07Speaker 1: Globe Totters through uh Scooby Doo. When the Globe Cotters
- 5:12Speaker 1: Scooby as well as the right remember that when I
- 5:17Speaker 1: learned and then whide were the sport? So I used
- 5:21Speaker 1: to see the Globe Totters there um and then when
- 5:23Speaker 1: they came out on Gilligan's Island. So when the Globe
- 5:27Speaker 1: Totters were really deep in the pop culture, that's really
- 5:30Speaker 1: when I learned my my mom um never could afford
- 5:34Speaker 1: to take me and my siblings to see them live.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So I never saw the Harlem Globe Cotters live growing up,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but I remember that flash and flare and funny and
- 5:43Speaker 1: fun of the Globe Totters growing up. Well, it's really interesting,
- 5:47Speaker 1: Like I I've actually had the pleasure of visiting your headquarters,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and it's almost like walking through a museum, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and it's really so much history and and it's so
- 5:58Speaker 1: and it defines Sir Lanes and then how the Globe
- 6:01Speaker 1: Charters had an impact on our lives, you know, because
- 6:04Speaker 1: you know, even though they were entertainers, they also were
- 6:07Speaker 1: crossing you know, international lines. They also were entertainers that
- 6:11Speaker 1: everybody could relate to, and especially white America, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and becaus all I saw when I watched ABC Wild
- 6:18Speaker 1: War was fort was an audience or stadium or arena
- 6:21Speaker 1: field with white people. What does the audience make up
- 6:24Speaker 1: of what the Globe Charter is attracting right now? Mm hmmm.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So I I was talking, I'll tell you a quick story.
- 6:32Speaker 1: As I answered, this question. I was talking to coach
- 6:34Speaker 1: Loui Dunbar. Loui Dunbar, he's one of our legends, Louis
- 6:39Speaker 1: Dunbar graduating from my college, University of Houston. So I
- 6:42Speaker 1: know Louis Dunbar six nine and a half point guard
- 6:45Speaker 1: port forard. You can just stop talking to Sonny, So
- 6:48Speaker 1: you just throw out Louis dumb On like I didn't
- 6:50Speaker 1: know who you're talking about. Louis Dumbar. Come on, he was.
- 6:52Speaker 1: He was a point forward, a port forward before they
- 6:55Speaker 1: were point forwards. I know him very well. University us
- 6:58Speaker 1: to graduate Louise Dumba continue to do so. I will
- 7:03Speaker 1: continue for your audience. They may not have known like
- 7:07Speaker 1: we do so now we put them up on Games
- 7:09Speaker 1: Fred and Little Games. So Coach lou shared with me
- 7:14Speaker 1: once like people would ask them that question like why
- 7:16Speaker 1: would you not um send the ball on the fingers
- 7:22Speaker 1: of the little you know, black boys or girls at
- 7:24Speaker 1: a game, and he would say, I couldn't get to them.
- 7:28Speaker 1: They were so far up in the stands because of
- 7:31Speaker 1: the tickets that they were able to purchase, that they
- 7:34Speaker 1: he couldn't do that. So people of color were there
- 7:38Speaker 1: in small numbers, but it was the globe. Hutters were
- 7:42Speaker 1: primarily um entertaining what white audiences UM and have been
- 7:46Speaker 1: doing that for decades and UM as culture has shifted
- 7:51Speaker 1: right as this love of basketball is evolved. That's where
- 7:55Speaker 1: we need and want to be. We want our audience
- 7:57Speaker 1: to reflect UM the isoscope of colors, of the glow
- 8:02Speaker 1: that we touch and that our players visit. Well, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: interesting thing about it because of the fact that the
- 8:07Speaker 1: Global tchroters do touch and then and they do uh,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, they do tricks that uh and I say that,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna tall you sending the word trick.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think it's an insult. They have a skill set
- 8:18Speaker 1: that they developed, whether it's the half court hook shot
- 8:21Speaker 1: or driven between the legs or the or the half
- 8:25Speaker 1: court shots, which now when you see when you see
- 8:28Speaker 1: what Steph Courage is doing, they was doing in the
- 8:30Speaker 1: Global Charter a long time ago. Okay, half court three
- 8:33Speaker 1: point shots. That was probably that was part of the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Global Troters mantra of how their skill set and so
- 8:39Speaker 1: what somebody some people have called tricks have not been
- 8:43Speaker 1: become part of the NBA style of play. The three
- 8:47Speaker 1: point shot and so so when you see that transition.
- 8:50Speaker 1: In order for you to come in and be a
- 8:52Speaker 1: part of this, you have to come from somewhere. You
- 8:54Speaker 1: have to have build your reservate from somewhere. Sunny. So,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I saw Dolly Wood and talk about uh, developing your brand,
- 9:01Speaker 1: walking through these different structures of success. And also you
- 9:05Speaker 1: as an individual person of color, going in these different
- 9:09Speaker 1: lanes where people expect you to be a certain way
- 9:12Speaker 1: and you show them that you're able to relate and
- 9:14Speaker 1: be able to communicate and market to all. Talk to us, Sunny,
- 9:20Speaker 1: who's Hunt um So, that flashing player of the game
- 9:24Speaker 1: of basketball. So basketball runs deep in my roots. So
- 9:29Speaker 1: my mom raised four kids. She was a big Larry
- 9:33Speaker 1: Bird and Matthew Johnson's fans, That's right. And then um,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I grew up you know, watching Michael Jordan's I was
- 9:44Speaker 1: a big North Carolina fan. When Jr. Reid played like
- 9:47Speaker 1: that was my squad. My husband as a basketball coach.
- 9:52Speaker 1: My son plays basketball. He's in college. Um playing basketball now.
- 9:56Speaker 1: So I've been around basketball a lot, and I like
- 9:59Speaker 1: to think that I'm gonna existing coach. It's finally here
- 10:05Speaker 1: the season of celebration, and no matter how you celebrate
- 10:09Speaker 1: with family and friends, whether you're preparing for reis magos
- 10:12Speaker 1: or Karamu lighting the Manura, are going to midnight mass.

- 10:27Speaker 1: Support minority owned or founded brands by giving gifts from
- 10:31Speaker 1: Human Nation and shame moisture or treat them to everyone's
- 10:35Speaker 1: favorite active wear from top brands like Nike, Adidas, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: under Armor. And in the spirit of giving, Coals Cares
- 10:42Speaker 1: is donating eight million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide committed
- 10:46Speaker 1: to the health and well being of our communities. No
- 10:49Speaker 1: matter how you celebrate, when you shop at Coals, you're
- 10:52Speaker 1: right where you belong. So this season, give with all
- 10:56Speaker 1: your heart with great gifts from Coals or Coals dot Com.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And we're live here outside the Perez family home, just
- 11:03Speaker 1: waiting for the And there they go, almost on time.
- 11:06Speaker 1: This morning. Mom is coming out the front door strong
- 11:09Speaker 1: with a double arm kid carry. Looks like Dad has
- 11:12Speaker 1: the bags. Daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh, but
- 11:15Speaker 1: the diaper bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere. Oh,
- 11:21Speaker 1: but mom has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle
- 11:24Speaker 1: for the toddler. And now the eldest daughter, who looks
- 11:27Speaker 1: to be about nine or ten, has secured herself in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the booster seat. Dad SIPs the bag clothes and they're off. Ah,
- 11:34Speaker 1: but looks like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup is
- 11:37Speaker 1: still on the roof of the car and there it goes. Ah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That's a shame that mug was a fan favorite. Don't
- 11:44Speaker 1: sweat the small stuff. Just nailed the big stuff, like
- 11:47Speaker 1: making sure your kids are buckled correctly in the right
- 11:49Speaker 1: seat for their agent's eyes. Learn more n h t

- 11:54Speaker 1: s A dot gov slash the Right Seat, brought to
- 11:58Speaker 1: you by Mizza and the ad Council. What grows in
- 12:01Speaker 1: the forest trees? Sure you know what else grows in
- 12:04Speaker 1: the forest. Our imagination, our sense of wonder, and our
- 12:08Speaker 1: family bonds grow too, because when we disconnect from this
- 12:14Speaker 1: and connect with this, we reconnect with each other. The
- 12:19Speaker 1: forest is closer than you think. Find a forest near
- 12:22Speaker 1: you and start exploring. I Discover the Forest dot org,
- 12:25Speaker 1: brought to you by the United States Forest Service and
- 12:28Speaker 1: the AD Council. Can you dribble a basketball? I gotta
- 12:33Speaker 1: knee crossover when nobody's around. You tell I know what
- 12:40Speaker 1: if somebody starts talking about everybody else, you know, everybody
- 12:43Speaker 1: else there will say nothing about because you start bragging
- 12:45Speaker 1: on yourself. First. Now I got a hook shot. I
- 12:47Speaker 1: gotta jump from the corner. I gotta I gotta between
- 12:50Speaker 1: the legs. I got around the back. You ain't said
- 12:52Speaker 1: nothing about yourself. You're talking about your mama, you talk
- 12:55Speaker 1: about your husband, you talk about your son. And you went, oh,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and you know and I and I'm mean coach, that's right,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm dope, go on the sideline. But you know I
- 13:06Speaker 1: was actually I was a cheerleader. I was a cheerleader
- 13:09Speaker 1: to your high school and at Clark Atlanta University from
- 13:12Speaker 1: a proud ah clo. I know you had our presidents
- 13:15Speaker 1: on the show recently. So I got to here and
- 13:19Speaker 1: coach from the sidelines for a long time. Right. So, um,
- 13:24Speaker 1: So my journey, my journey, and as I built built
- 13:29Speaker 1: out you know who I am is one part of it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I would say my time at and historically black college
- 13:35Speaker 1: at Clark Atlanta. You know our motto was find away
- 13:38Speaker 1: or make one and that translated not just in the classroom,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but it really was in life. And it goes even
- 13:44Speaker 1: beyond that. You know. I was you know, raised UM,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know by my brothers UM who had sort of
- 13:52Speaker 1: the mindset of like forge your path, know who you
- 13:55Speaker 1: are and know who you ain't. UM, don't anyone that
- 14:02Speaker 1: sort of doubts you or underestimates you under estimates you
- 14:06Speaker 1: use that as fuel to drive your passions and be
- 14:09Speaker 1: trusting and open. So God has been, you know, my
- 14:13Speaker 1: guide of my life for me and my family, UM.
- 14:16Speaker 1: For years we were those kids that are we'll be
- 14:19Speaker 1: at church all day. We'd be there for UH Sunday
- 14:23Speaker 1: school service as well as totlu UM. So we were
- 14:27Speaker 1: in the church UM a lot. And so my face
- 14:30Speaker 1: is really important. So kind of what led me UM
- 14:34Speaker 1: kind of on this pass is I believe that nothing
- 14:41Speaker 1: is impossible, and I don't have this um over confidence,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but I do believe in UH determination and hard work,
- 14:54Speaker 1: so putting, putting in the extra hours and being okay,
- 14:59Speaker 1: in confident WHI walking in the doors even if there's
- 15:02Speaker 1: no one in that room that looks like you, UM,
- 15:04Speaker 1: being confident and trust in and open and who I
- 15:07Speaker 1: am and what I'm capable of has really been one
- 15:10Speaker 1: of the things that have driven me. When I went
- 15:12Speaker 1: to the Dollywood Company, Um, I was, you know, one
- 15:15Speaker 1: of less than you know, five African Americans and the
- 15:19Speaker 1: management team I was one of two and leaderships and
- 15:23Speaker 1: it was such a special culture there. Um Dolly Pardon
- 15:27Speaker 1: believes like we opened our doors at Dollywood to all
- 15:30Speaker 1: people every day regardless, and the desire was, how do
- 15:34Speaker 1: we create families experiences for families that are worth repeating
- 15:38Speaker 1: regardless of what color you are and your background. Everybody's
- 15:42Speaker 1: here for that, right, something that's meaningful, something that's special,
- 15:46Speaker 1: something that's memorable. So that's really at the root. I
- 15:50Speaker 1: sort of know by why, I know what my purpose is,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and my purpose is to really help to influence people
- 15:57Speaker 1: to just spend time together. And now the basketball that
- 16:02Speaker 1: round ball has been uniting families and uniting people of
- 16:05Speaker 1: all walks of life for decades. I just got the
- 16:08Speaker 1: run right and have the opportunity through the globetrotters who
- 16:12Speaker 1: have been trailblazers, who have been breaking down barriers, who
- 16:15Speaker 1: with where society is and how racial injustice is, Like Um,
- 16:20Speaker 1: truly as the forefront that right has reached this pinnacle
- 16:23Speaker 1: where there's zero tolerance from you know, our next generation.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I'm able to help use basketball as a means to
- 16:31Speaker 1: really deliver that message on behalf of our players and
- 16:34Speaker 1: the globetrotters way and what they've been doing for years.
- 16:37Speaker 1: We know an interesting thing about it because you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: just trying to put the white ryries in perspective, just
- 16:43Speaker 1: to send my point of view when the court, because
- 16:46Speaker 1: the globtrotter brain is like court gestures. You know, they
- 16:50Speaker 1: think they're having a good fund and sometimes they're having
- 16:52Speaker 1: a good time in front of white people. And then
- 16:55Speaker 1: when the when the George FD hit and uh, I'm
- 17:00Speaker 1: sure there was a perception and maybe it wasn't a
- 17:02Speaker 1: perception of how what role does the does the Globe
- 17:04Speaker 1: Trotters play in turning that corner of what what are
- 17:09Speaker 1: they speaking for and what brand or what culture are
- 17:12Speaker 1: they trying to represent? And you looked at and say, hey,
- 17:17Speaker 1: we are a black brand, we are a black culture
- 17:20Speaker 1: and social justice has to be part of the messaging.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Was that a difficult spin? Was it a difficult spin
- 17:27Speaker 1: for your players to understand or your player felt it
- 17:29Speaker 1: was a breath of fresh air when you introduced these
- 17:32Speaker 1: new ideas or these new cultural changes to the to
- 17:35Speaker 1: the Hall of Gold cau because Hall and Gold problems
- 17:38Speaker 1: are what they are there their basketball phenomens male and female.
- 17:42Speaker 1: But the end what are there off the court? That's
- 17:44Speaker 1: what I believe, that's the story you're trying to tell now, correct, Absolutely,
- 17:50Speaker 1: the Hall of Goldtrotters players are peoper heroes both on
- 17:54Speaker 1: and off the court. And any player that you speak
- 17:57Speaker 1: to and they talk about the legacy of the shoulders
- 18:00Speaker 1: in which they stand on, of the great curly news
- 18:02Speaker 1: and the metal arc limits, of of the sweet blue dunbars,
- 18:06Speaker 1: of you know, their desire to just spread love um
- 18:11Speaker 1: this idea of spreading game, of being that phenomenal player,
- 18:17Speaker 1: that athlete on the court, but really being that um hero,
- 18:23Speaker 1: that inspiration, that motivation off the court. And I think
- 18:28Speaker 1: that's something that hasn't been seen of. Well, what are
- 18:31Speaker 1: the Harlem Glowtrotters like outside of the jersey Because that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: where the personal bond right is made. That's how us
- 18:41Speaker 1: as people find our heroes, find our stars, find those
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, individuals that we look up to. It's who
- 18:48Speaker 1: you are inside and outside the jersey, we have a
- 18:51Speaker 1: superhero strength going and when you don't, and that's really
- 18:54Speaker 1: been the focus and s of the Y and the Y.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Now our purpose of the Glowtrotters is world basketball showmanships,
- 19:02Speaker 1: uniting families and spreading joy, and we've lost our relevance
- 19:06Speaker 1: and our ability to do that as culture has evolved.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You sort of said it, we've been these basketball thing ums,
- 19:11Speaker 1: you know, kind of considered, right, you know, these these
- 19:14Speaker 1: tricks um that they do and this experience that they create.
- 19:18Speaker 1: We've had some fans for decades, but we've had people
- 19:22Speaker 1: that are also saying, are the Globe Cutters still around? Right? So? Right?
- 19:27Speaker 1: And that just hurts, right, that hurts. So we want
- 19:31Speaker 1: to reach that younger eight to ten year old African
- 19:35Speaker 1: American boy and his parents. And if we start to
- 19:39Speaker 1: look at that, because they're they's anonymous with um basketball culture.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Basketball basketball is anonymous with styles UM and the halo
- 19:50Speaker 1: effect that African Americans have one culture on brands, on businesses. UM.
- 19:56Speaker 1: We believe that is going to appeal and draw the
- 19:59Speaker 1: next generation of fans. So the elephant in the room,
- 20:02Speaker 1: people ask that means you don't want Caucasian families. You
- 20:06Speaker 1: know the family have been who loved the bulb Trotters
- 20:09Speaker 1: and have always loved the Globetrotters. You don't want them
- 20:11Speaker 1: as fans anymore, absolutely not, absolutely not. This is really
- 20:16Speaker 1: an it's an and not an ore, and it's important
- 20:19Speaker 1: for us to open ourselves up to be relevant in
- 20:22Speaker 1: the culture so that we can see that a hundred
- 20:28Speaker 1: hundred year anniversary and we have generations coming up that
- 20:33Speaker 1: love the Globetrotters in the same way that those from
- 20:35Speaker 1: the past has and ps C set average handling time.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Sometimes taking your brand's customer experience to the next level
- 20:42Speaker 1: can seem like an uphill battle filled with thorny metrics challenges.
- 20:46Speaker 1: But it doesn't have to be this way thanks to Ubiquity.

- 21:46Speaker 1: face of a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky.
- 21:49Speaker 1: They see treasure and pebbles. They see a windy path
- 21:53Speaker 1: that could lead to adventure, and they see you. They're fearless. Guide.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Is this fascinating world? Find a forest near you and
- 22:01Speaker 1: start exploring and discover the forest dot orgon brought to
- 22:04Speaker 1: you by the United States Forest Service and the Council. Well,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you have to stand for something, you know, And then
- 22:10Speaker 1: that's what you were just saying, you know, and you're
- 22:11Speaker 1: saying that, what are the other than basketball, other than
- 22:15Speaker 1: trick artists, other than entertainers for longevity purposes? What do
- 22:20Speaker 1: you stand? And if you stand somewhere and it has
- 22:22Speaker 1: a basis of reality, authenticity, as they like to say,
- 22:25Speaker 1: downdays a sense of purpose as they like to say nowadays,
- 22:29Speaker 1: and that's what you find, that's what you built back
- 22:32Speaker 1: into the Hall of Gold Troders, because that's why they
- 22:34Speaker 1: were founded in the six that's why they were created,
- 22:37Speaker 1: because they were a voice of uh, show you you
- 22:40Speaker 1: can do this. You can do this too. We can
- 22:42Speaker 1: travel to the world, we'd be respected, we can earn
- 22:45Speaker 1: income because of our talents. And that's what I believe
- 22:49Speaker 1: you switched back to that in a good way because
- 22:51Speaker 1: it was needed. And then what happens within the day
- 22:55Speaker 1: to day life, the global Hall and Globials has become
- 22:57Speaker 1: relevant because at one time, you know, only time I
- 23:01Speaker 1: have heard news about the Hall and Gltery when they
- 23:03Speaker 1: were doing some sensational trick, you know, either shooting the
- 23:06Speaker 1: top of a building, you know, shooting evolved from a helicopter.
- 23:10Speaker 1: You know, that's when they made the news. You know,
- 23:12Speaker 1: now they're making the news because of the brand that
- 23:14Speaker 1: socially conscious and awere up their fan base and their fans.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And that's what you're saying. You're not trying to turn
- 23:20Speaker 1: away ever your fans, You're what You're just trying to say,
- 23:23Speaker 1: this is who we are welcome us for who we are,
- 23:26Speaker 1: because you're welcome with us because of our talents. Except that,
- 23:29Speaker 1: because that's the only way you're gonna get growth from
- 23:30Speaker 1: the young people, because the young people are about authenticity
- 23:33Speaker 1: and that's what you're trying to reach. You you're having
- 23:35Speaker 1: a fan is fifty six years old. That's not gonna
- 23:38Speaker 1: grow your ticket sales. Having the fans starting the five fifteen,
- 23:42Speaker 1: they're gonna have kids, and when they have kids, they're
- 23:45Speaker 1: gonna have more kids. So it becomes a generational growth.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And that's what National Football League has figured out. And
- 23:50Speaker 1: that's what you're trying to do right now with the
- 23:52Speaker 1: Hall and Gold trivel in your mind, isn't working. Wow,
- 23:58Speaker 1: we're at the beginning of the beginning. So we stepped
- 24:01Speaker 1: out in our jay Z allowed me to reintroduce myself
- 24:04Speaker 1: moments on July one, UM in a bold way, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: we are touching every aspect you know of the brand
- 24:11Speaker 1: and business because as you said, UM, ticket sells are
- 24:14Speaker 1: important and that's really been the cornerstone of our business.
- 24:18Speaker 1: But really were re evolving the Globe Trotters to a
- 24:22Speaker 1: branded entertainment company that also tours. So if our fans
- 24:27Speaker 1: want to engage and connect with us in YouTube where
- 24:32Speaker 1: that's where they like to be entertained. Well, that's where
- 24:34Speaker 1: gonna be apparel and product um if that's what they
- 24:38Speaker 1: used to sort of identify, you know, the brands that
- 24:42Speaker 1: share the same value right that they that mean something
- 24:45Speaker 1: to them. We want to be in those spaces and
- 24:47Speaker 1: places as well. That's why we changed our uniform. Um.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The Globetrotters have never had a black uniform, you know.
- 24:54Speaker 1: With the red, white and blue. We partnered with Undergrown Um,
- 24:57Speaker 1: Dustin Candling and carry Us are just fantastic lifestyle designers
- 25:03Speaker 1: to really modernize but maintain the tradition that you know.
- 25:08Speaker 1: So that's that is what we've done in terms of looks.
- 25:10Speaker 1: So is it working. I think one of the response
- 25:13Speaker 1: in the engagement that we've seen from fans has been phenomenal.
- 25:17Speaker 1: It's been phenomenal. Um, we are just ramping up. We
- 25:20Speaker 1: have brands that are that magnet is being created and
- 25:25Speaker 1: our players. It's really about how we elevate our players
- 25:28Speaker 1: as stars. And the more we start to see that
- 25:31Speaker 1: happen where people know by name. Oh I love Latique
- 25:37Speaker 1: jet Rivers because he has that kill a crossover, but
- 25:41Speaker 1: he can cook me right or his TikTok are out
- 25:47Speaker 1: of control. So that's the Once we start to see that,
- 25:50Speaker 1: then we know that is really crystallizing. But um, right now,
- 25:54Speaker 1: the early indicators are fantastic. But we are just getting started.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I refer to us as we're nine of year old startup.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Oh well, I'm happy to be there with you. Now
- 26:03Speaker 1: you mentioned something Clark Atlanta University and the hbc U.
- 26:06Speaker 1: This is in the heart of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia. I'm
- 26:09Speaker 1: doing an event over there, uh September twenty fifth called
- 26:12Speaker 1: HBCU College Day, and uh it's on the campus. And
- 26:16Speaker 1: what I'm doing is I'm bringing all the HBCUs from
- 26:19Speaker 1: a state of Georgia and some are coming from Alabama
- 26:21Speaker 1: and from North Carolina. And I got the I got there,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I got Morgan Stanley, I got some, got the Big Brothers,
- 26:28Speaker 1: Big Sisters, I got the NFL, all of that, the
- 26:33Speaker 1: coke bottle of United Coca Cola, United Bottlers are involved.
- 26:37Speaker 1: And what I'm trying to do is in all the
- 26:38Speaker 1: high school students to come in. You know, we're doing
- 26:41Speaker 1: social distance in my mascot will be available, Sanitizer will
- 26:44Speaker 1: be available to come to Clark Atlanta University to get
- 26:47Speaker 1: the hbc U experience. We're gonna have DJ there, We're
- 26:49Speaker 1: gonna have staffers, we're gonna have drama lines, and we're
- 26:52Speaker 1: gonna have speakers, and I think it would be a
- 26:54Speaker 1: perfect And we're gonna have a man DJ Mars is
- 26:56Speaker 1: gonna be spending here, gonna have a BMX bike shop
- 26:59Speaker 1: set up, and then the military is going to have
- 27:01Speaker 1: an actual F sixteen jet there and the hanger there
- 27:04Speaker 1: and and we're gonna have the Air Force there there,
- 27:07Speaker 1: National Guard there. I just think, you know, when you
- 27:10Speaker 1: said Clark Atlanta University and alumni, and you're the vice
- 27:13Speaker 1: president of marketing, I think I gotta have a global
- 27:15Speaker 1: trial there, at least as a representative showing off this
- 27:19Speaker 1: new uniform. Now I'm not trying to put no pressure
- 27:21Speaker 1: on you, but I didn't know nothing about clarking that universual.
- 27:24Speaker 1: But I'd be remiss if I didn't tell y'are doing
- 27:26Speaker 1: the big events Uptember twenty fifth that the whole city
- 27:29Speaker 1: is gonna know about. In a couple of weeks. I'm
- 27:31Speaker 1: gonna start advertising on all the radio stations. I just
- 27:33Speaker 1: think that'd be cool to read, to bring that brand
- 27:35Speaker 1: down there just to showcase it just in a very
- 27:38Speaker 1: organic manner because it's on the campus where you are from,
- 27:41Speaker 1: you graduated from, and we are trying to just bring
- 27:44Speaker 1: the HBCU experience to all the students in the state
- 27:47Speaker 1: of Georgia. High school students and young juniors and seniors
- 27:50Speaker 1: who attend Clark Atlanta Spellman and all of they can
- 27:53Speaker 1: get Fortune five dred job. The companies are gonna be
- 27:55Speaker 1: their recruiting. We're gonna have HBCU college recruiters and military recruiters.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So that's what HBCU College Day. I just I just
- 28:03Speaker 1: want to just bring that up to you and say
- 28:05Speaker 1: hey and invite is on your desk right now to
- 28:08Speaker 1: come down there with your with your with your troop
- 28:10Speaker 1: or one or two of them, however you want to
- 28:12Speaker 1: do it, because I think it would be special. That
- 28:15Speaker 1: is fantastic. Uh. As we said Clark Atlanta, we will
- 28:18Speaker 1: find away or make one good good because like I said,
- 28:21Speaker 1: because we're because I'll be hosting it. I will host it,
- 28:23Speaker 1: you know, and we're gonna have a stage wanted by
- 28:26Speaker 1: forty foot stage and we'll be sitting there doing our things.
- 28:29Speaker 1: That's gonna be really great, and you know Dr Frenchship
- 28:31Speaker 1: probably going from there. He's the president of Clark Atlanta University.
- 28:35Speaker 1: We've developed a really nice relationship, but it's about your
- 28:38Speaker 1: brand and bringing it into natural relationships. And and I
- 28:41Speaker 1: just thought of at least I'll be remiss if I
- 28:43Speaker 1: didn't bring it up, because I think that when you
- 28:45Speaker 1: said you a certain smile and certain pride came out
- 28:48Speaker 1: of you when you said Clark Atlanta University. That's right.
- 28:52Speaker 1: We can't help it. We can't help it. And we
- 28:55Speaker 1: I mean partnership with us UM, especially as we sort
- 28:59Speaker 1: of look across our business. UM we want to again
- 29:02Speaker 1: with our staff, with our team to sort of reflects
- 29:06Speaker 1: again the audience that we want to serve. So how
- 29:09Speaker 1: we start to look and recruit and look at developing
- 29:11Speaker 1: programs with HBCUs the right to sort of how what
- 29:16Speaker 1: are some of the opportunities within live entertainment, live events,
- 29:19Speaker 1: touring and the touring industry that the students might even
- 29:23Speaker 1: know don't know exists for them. So cultivating those relationships
- 29:28Speaker 1: are all about it. We're developing a certificate program with
- 29:31Speaker 1: Savannah State that is for UM Live Events, UM and
- 29:36Speaker 1: Entertainment to really start to teach the coursework. So whether
- 29:40Speaker 1: you want to work at a venue you know, um
- 29:43Speaker 1: stay farm arena, or you want to work on a
- 29:45Speaker 1: traveling tour, you know like our Harlem Globe Hunters tour.
- 29:49Speaker 1: What does that look like, what's the skill set? What
- 29:51Speaker 1: do you study? What's that curriculum? And then the desires
- 29:55Speaker 1: and that thing gets rolled out of other HBCUs around
- 29:58Speaker 1: the country. So we're excited about that partnership with Savannah
- 30:01Speaker 1: State and any opportunity to get back to the campus.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I'm all about it. I forgive your book and all
- 30:11Speaker 1: this extra stuff I would give your tim by tim Booth.
- 30:13Speaker 1: So if you want to use that Timo tim Booth
- 30:15Speaker 1: is just decorating the hall and Global Trial and all
- 30:17Speaker 1: and bring the people down, Please know the gift is
- 30:20Speaker 1: yours because that's a van of state information you just
- 30:23Speaker 1: gave me, and your passion for developing that brand relationship
- 30:26Speaker 1: with HBCUs. It's where I'm at my life, you know,
- 30:29Speaker 1: about trying to you know, just just stepping up our
- 30:32Speaker 1: esp and a couple of years ago I went over
- 30:34Speaker 1: there with Steven A. Smith and Dave rob David Roberts
- 30:37Speaker 1: and allowed me to broadcast the first take for two
- 30:41Speaker 1: hours and we've over the last couple of years we
- 30:43Speaker 1: registered two thousand students to attend HBCUs and raised eleven
- 30:47Speaker 1: million dollars and scholarship dollars, and so I know that
- 30:50Speaker 1: that's where that's one of my legacies. I'm building my
- 30:52Speaker 1: life and just to hear you being a pro graduate,
- 30:55Speaker 1: you know, I just had to bring that up and
- 30:57Speaker 1: definitely off air, you know, get my team to talk
- 30:59Speaker 1: to people, because it's gonna be September's a Saturday, ten
- 31:03Speaker 1: am the SPM, and I definitely like to see the
- 31:06Speaker 1: Hall of Growth Childs down there. But before we go,
- 31:08Speaker 1: two things I wanted to talk about is the Spread
- 31:10Speaker 1: the Game Tour and the dear NBA there be happy
- 31:16Speaker 1: to so our Spread Game Tour as we relaunched the Globtrotters.
- 31:21Speaker 1: We started touring in July and we're visiting several cities
- 31:25Speaker 1: around the country. It's everything that you love about the Globetrotters.
- 31:29Speaker 1: UM and been some so that flash and player of
- 31:32Speaker 1: the game. It is entertaining. You're gonna see that the
- 31:35Speaker 1: skillfulness of our players. We partnered with UM some folks
- 31:39Speaker 1: from Broadway, so that was one of the gifts for
- 31:42Speaker 1: us when our business came to a screention hall during
- 31:45Speaker 1: the pandemic was Broadways did too, and we wanted to
- 31:47Speaker 1: reimagine what our show experience was, so we partnered with
- 31:51Speaker 1: the Broadway team. So there's some new characters that you'll meet.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I kind of describe it. It's like um an All
- 31:57Speaker 1: Star Saturday Night where you see that incredible deep range shooting,
- 32:03Speaker 1: dunks that are out of this world, and the ball
- 32:07Speaker 1: handling and some beautiful passes meet I'm dating myself in
- 32:11Speaker 1: living color. So if you like that, if you put
- 32:15Speaker 1: those scenes together, that's what they're gonna get in the
- 32:17Speaker 1: Spread Game tour. The music is just fantastic. It's just
- 32:21Speaker 1: a good time. So we'll continue touring through September. Will
- 32:25Speaker 1: be announcing some additional dates for the tour that will
- 32:28Speaker 1: be coming later this year, so that will be coming
- 32:30Speaker 1: um so uh though, we're going to take a time
- 32:33Speaker 1: out and touring in September just to kind of amp
- 32:36Speaker 1: up the show and experience and and and get ready
- 32:39Speaker 1: for a second run that's gonna start um in in
- 32:42Speaker 1: December is when the next set of dates will be
- 32:46Speaker 1: coming to several cities around the country as well as
- 32:49Speaker 1: we'll be going back out internationally and then you're gonna
- 32:52Speaker 1: ask about the dr n b A. So our letter
- 32:55Speaker 1: to the NBA is that what you're referring. I gotta know,
- 32:59Speaker 1: I gotta know, I gotta no. So we talked about
- 33:05Speaker 1: this at the start. The NBA would not be what
- 33:08Speaker 1: it is today had it not been for the Harlem
- 33:10Speaker 1: Glow Totters. So, UM, we were trailblazers and integrating the
- 33:15Speaker 1: game of basketball. And we love what the NBA has
- 33:18Speaker 1: grown and become, UM, and we think that we deserve
- 33:21Speaker 1: a franchise. So as the NBA Commissioner has been exploring
- 33:25Speaker 1: that idea of new franchises, a new teams, we want
- 33:30Speaker 1: to be one of those teams and we think that, um,
- 33:33Speaker 1: it'll bring justice win win for the NBA as well
- 33:36Speaker 1: as fans that you know, some of that globe hotter style.
- 33:41Speaker 1: UM of bringing that into the the NBA experience would
- 33:46Speaker 1: be just fantastic. We would field the right level of
- 33:50Speaker 1: talent that would be needed for an NBA franchise while
- 33:54Speaker 1: continuing to do our more entertainment show style tours UM
- 34:00Speaker 1: really separately, but um, the response from fans have just
- 34:06Speaker 1: been fantastic and we really look forward to the opportunity
- 34:10Speaker 1: to talk to the commissioner about this opportunity. That's pretty powerful. Well,
- 34:14Speaker 1: I'm talking to Sunny Hickman, the vice president market in
- 34:17Speaker 1: sales for the Hall and Globetrothers and a proud Clark,
- 34:20Speaker 1: a Landing University graduate, and she's a mean basketball coach.
- 34:27Speaker 1: That's right, that's a game. Thank you for coming on
- 34:32Speaker 1: money Making Conversations. I really appreciated. It has been an honor.
