Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My guess is Coronalty. I mean, y'all, Tay can currently
- 0:03Speaker 1: be seen on the as a powerful attorney. I've seen
- 0:06Speaker 1: this serious. I'm I'm in love with I can't wait
- 0:08Speaker 1: to start talking to him because the character is really edgy,
- 0:11Speaker 1: smart and little Street in her too. Um Attorney Steward
- 0:17Speaker 1: On who Lose Reasonable Doubt. She's in their star with
- 0:19Speaker 1: my board Michael Eally, we're talking about that relationship when
- 0:22Speaker 1: the interview starts to produced by and directed the pilot
- 0:25Speaker 1: episode by Cary Washington and also my man Larry mill Wilmore.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So she got a lot of names in this series
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm very familiar with. She plays the character Jack's prosecutor,
- 0:35Speaker 1: who was also a wife and mother who is balancing marriage,
- 0:38Speaker 1: kids and a murder trial. I want to ask about
- 0:40Speaker 1: that marriage because I don't know if, but I don't
- 0:43Speaker 1: know what she's balancing there. Please welcome to Money Making
- 0:46Speaker 1: Conversation and master class the Incredible Star of Reasonable Doubt.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Now Aaron on Hulu. Emma Cornalty, how you doing Hello,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm doing great. Well. First of all, you know when
- 0:58Speaker 1: I when I see a face like it, because I'm
- 0:59Speaker 1: a t V person, the TV person and uh, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: as we go through this business, you know, you know,
- 1:04Speaker 1: you have scenes here and there. And so I started watching.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I got an early preview of the series they sentil
- 1:10Speaker 1: link and I'm watching it going she looks so familiar,
- 1:13Speaker 1: she looks so familiar, And so so I go back
- 1:16Speaker 1: to the bio and it says ballers, you know at
- 1:19Speaker 1: starring opposite Dwayne Johnson. So you were that representative for
- 1:23Speaker 1: the NFL, like Players Association and Ballers Correct? Correct? Now,
- 1:28Speaker 1: when you when you get a role like that, because
- 1:30Speaker 1: that's you know, because you've worked with Miles Davis, my
- 1:32Speaker 1: Man David or Yellow you know, so you work with
- 1:35Speaker 1: a lot of individuals who command, you know, screen attention,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but you have to make your place on the screen
- 1:41Speaker 1: as well. Not someone not using the word being intimidated.
- 1:45Speaker 1: How do you prepare for these relationships, these own screen
- 1:48Speaker 1: relationships with actors of that magnitude. Um, well, I think
- 1:54Speaker 1: the best way that I've learned to prepare is just
- 1:57Speaker 1: by being prepared, doing my best work. Um, doing all
- 2:01Speaker 1: the work that I can leading up to, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 1: the first day of filming, because that gives you a
- 2:05Speaker 1: sense of freedom, you know, being able to relax and
- 2:08Speaker 1: being confident knowing that I've done my my partner to
- 2:11Speaker 1: this point. And then once you get on set, you
- 2:14Speaker 1: know it's time to play. You know, I'm I'm you know,
- 2:16Speaker 1: at my best, my co stars at their best, and
- 2:19Speaker 1: then it's just that's where all the fun happens, you know.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And so I think it's the preparation is what allows
- 2:25Speaker 1: you to have the confidence to just be. The preparations
- 2:29Speaker 1: just key, I'll be honest. I cannot act. You know.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I started out my career my degrees in mathematics. I
- 2:36Speaker 1: I left IBM to pursue a career as a stand
- 2:38Speaker 1: up comedian. Um so I thought I was gonna be
- 2:41Speaker 1: the next day Murphree. Definitely was gonna be the next
- 2:43Speaker 1: Richard Pryor. And so you know, I found my niche
- 2:46Speaker 1: behind the screen, you know. And so so you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: I produced talent Steve Harvery one of my clients, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 1: Steve and one of my clients, and so a lot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of you know, a lot of other clients that I
- 2:55Speaker 1: have on the roster. But that's that's where I was at.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And then you see a talent like a Washington who's
- 3:01Speaker 1: directing the pallet and we know what she can do
- 3:03Speaker 1: in front of the camera. Absolutely, What when you see
- 3:07Speaker 1: that is it? Is it preparing you for the next move,
- 3:10Speaker 1: maybe for you to be a producer or a director,
- 3:13Speaker 1: or what do you do when you see what Karrie
- 3:15Speaker 1: Washington is doing? Well, it's definitely inspirational, you know, to
- 3:19Speaker 1: see what Carry has done with her career and how
- 3:22Speaker 1: she navigates her career, you know, and to see her now, um,
- 3:26Speaker 1: fledgling out into different things like producing and and directing. Um,
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's very inspiring and encouraging and and surely it is
- 3:33Speaker 1: something that I would be interested in doing at some point,
- 3:36Speaker 1: because it's great to see someone like Carrie who is
- 3:39Speaker 1: taking charge of her career and who wants to just
- 3:42Speaker 1: do things. I'm in a different space outside of just acting.
- 3:45Speaker 1: She wants to, you know, put her hands in other things.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And I think it's fantastic. I heard the word taking charge,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know. You know, I've always that was one of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the reasons why I stopped acting, where I stopped doing
- 3:56Speaker 1: stand up. I always felt I was auditioning and you know,
- 3:59Speaker 1: go in and I thought I killed the audition, and
- 4:01Speaker 1: then they come back well with somebody else, which is
- 4:04Speaker 1: really depressing. It's really depressing, but I always felt that
- 4:07Speaker 1: when I went behind the camera, I felt I had
- 4:10Speaker 1: a little bit more control. I felt, I know what
- 4:13Speaker 1: you're saying, but but let me say this though, because
- 4:16Speaker 1: I think that even as an actor you still have control.
- 4:19Speaker 1: There is still a sense of being in charge. It's
- 4:22Speaker 1: all about the power of no. That's what I've learned
- 4:25Speaker 1: in my career. You know, actors can sometimes think that
- 4:28Speaker 1: you just have to take every role, you have to
- 4:29Speaker 1: take every audition, but you don't. You do not. You
- 4:33Speaker 1: can navigate and create the kind of career that you
- 4:36Speaker 1: want to have and know that you do have the power.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You are in charge, and it doesn't necessarily mean that
- 4:43Speaker 1: you have to, you know, go and be a producer
- 4:45Speaker 1: or a writer to to be in charge of your
- 4:47Speaker 1: career as an actor. It's knowing that you have your
- 4:51Speaker 1: own agency to make your own choices. And I find
- 4:54Speaker 1: that that's the one thing that I realized. UM a
- 4:57Speaker 1: lot of actors starting out, they think that, well, I
- 5:00Speaker 1: have to do this audition, I have to do what
- 5:01Speaker 1: my agent says. But you're paying them. You're paying them
- 5:05Speaker 1: to get to the kind of roles that you want.
- 5:07Speaker 1: These everyone is working on your team, so that you
- 5:11Speaker 1: can be the best that you can be. And so
- 5:13Speaker 1: I think once we as actors really realize that, that's
- 5:16Speaker 1: where the power comes and that's where the agency comes
- 5:19Speaker 1: in for you to create the kind of career that
- 5:21Speaker 1: you want, rather than sitting around and just waiting for
- 5:24Speaker 1: things to fall in your lap and then the next
- 5:26Speaker 1: thing you know, you looked up and you've got this
- 5:28Speaker 1: career that's not really what you wanted. Um, And so
- 5:31Speaker 1: there's there's a way to navigate, and it's by having control. Well,
- 5:35Speaker 1: let's go back a little bit before we really get
- 5:36Speaker 1: into Reasonable Doubt. Because of the fact that I see
- 5:39Speaker 1: a polished actress, I see a confident actress on Reasonable Doubt,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and I see an age actress. What did you're coming
- 5:47Speaker 1: out of high school? Was it? Did you college? Talk
- 5:50Speaker 1: about some of the steps that encourage you to realize
- 5:52Speaker 1: that this not only was a dream but possibly can
- 5:55Speaker 1: become a career. Well, you know, it's it's funny. There's
- 6:00Speaker 1: a reason why this is full circle for me in
- 6:02Speaker 1: terms of playing the character of Jack's on Reasonable Doubt,
- 6:05Speaker 1: was because she's this powerful defense attorney and I always
- 6:09Speaker 1: thought I wanted to be an attorney when I first
- 6:11Speaker 1: you know, when I was as a kid and what
- 6:12Speaker 1: do I want to do? I think I want to
- 6:14Speaker 1: be a lawyer. Um. And so that was my dream,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know, all the way up through high school and
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know now praying for college. And thankfully I realized early,
- 6:24Speaker 1: oh no, you don't want to be a lawyer, you
- 6:27Speaker 1: just want to play the lawyer. I realized I liked
- 6:29Speaker 1: the power of the strength in the core room. I
- 6:31Speaker 1: like the bad suits. I liked all of that, but
- 6:34Speaker 1: I liked nothing about the study of law, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: so before wasting all my money doing that, but it
- 6:40Speaker 1: was it was a real dream. It was my girlfriend
- 6:43Speaker 1: and I and we had already decided our firm was
- 6:46Speaker 1: gonna be core Naldi and Sweeney Incorporated. And um, I realized, okay,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know what her name was, Tony, Tony, I think
- 6:53Speaker 1: I just want to be an actress. And she went
- 6:55Speaker 1: on to become an attorney. So we both found our space. Um.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But that was a pivot old moment for me because
- 7:01Speaker 1: I really realized, oh, you like the drama of being
- 7:05Speaker 1: an attorney, of being in that courtroom, you know. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: by that time I had already always, um done a
- 7:11Speaker 1: lot of you know, theater and summer theater and was
- 7:15Speaker 1: plays all that kind of stuff. But I didn't know
- 7:17Speaker 1: at that moment that I wanted to be an actor, um,
- 7:20Speaker 1: just yet. So it all kind of came together once
- 7:23Speaker 1: I made that realization in high school. And then from
- 7:26Speaker 1: there it was just full throttle throttle, just figuring it
- 7:30Speaker 1: out from there, you know, hitting the payment, all kinds
- 7:32Speaker 1: of you know, classes and auditions and everything and and
- 7:36Speaker 1: and that was there. We'll be right back with more
- 7:38Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return
- 7:45Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Originally from Houston, Texas.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So I moved to New York pursuing my stand up,
- 7:53Speaker 1: coming to grind and I moved to l A pursuing
- 7:56Speaker 1: my career, and I did get levels of success and
- 7:58Speaker 1: I'm very proud to put on my resume today. But
- 8:02Speaker 1: again it's still it is that community that you have
- 8:05Speaker 1: to get with and people the hustle, you know, people
- 8:08Speaker 1: telling me about this audition, taking these classes, your chops,
- 8:12Speaker 1: When did you you know this is what we want
- 8:14Speaker 1: to do, But when you realize I could actually do it? Uh,
- 8:20Speaker 1: that's a good question. Um, I'm trying to think of
- 8:24Speaker 1: when with that moment I have hit me when I realized, okay,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know what you can you can do this. Um.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I don't know nothing sticking out of my head, but
- 8:33Speaker 1: I do think there was a project that came and
- 8:39Speaker 1: there was a moment where I had a disagreement with
- 8:41Speaker 1: the director, and UM, I brought up my point of
- 8:47Speaker 1: view to the director and you know, he listened to
- 8:50Speaker 1: what have you, um, but he didn't think that it
- 8:52Speaker 1: was quite the right the right choice. But then later
- 8:56Speaker 1: on he realized it was the right choice. And I
- 8:59Speaker 1: mean later on you know that day we finished finished
- 9:01Speaker 1: filming and he came to me, he said, you were
- 9:03Speaker 1: absolutely correct, and I think you for coming to me.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And I even told him that gave me so much
- 9:09Speaker 1: confidence because it lets me know that I can trust
- 9:12Speaker 1: my instincts, UM, that I do have the courage to,
- 9:15Speaker 1: you know, stand up for what I think is right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you know, opposite someone who has all of this, this
- 9:21Speaker 1: experience and everything. UM. So it gave me a lot
- 9:24Speaker 1: of courage. And I think that would would be a
- 9:26Speaker 1: moment where I realized, you know, when you can't do this,
- 9:28Speaker 1: you can't. And I'm glad you answered that honestly, because
- 9:32Speaker 1: I tell people all the time, especially on this show,
- 9:34Speaker 1: whether it's listening on podcasts or watching the video on
- 9:38Speaker 1: YouTube or extreaming somewhere, is that that's the moment that
- 9:42Speaker 1: we all have in life, you know, when we have
- 9:43Speaker 1: a fear, you know, whether it changing jobs or you know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: because you can say that and other people on the
- 9:49Speaker 1: say the actress or actors will look at you, going,
- 9:52Speaker 1: she dripping, okay, she needed she needed chill, she would
- 9:55Speaker 1: need a cheer, She's not gonna be working no more.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Because that's the fear of what can happen in any job. Really,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know, when you when you share your opinion, especially
- 10:06Speaker 1: when they said that this is how you want to go.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I remember I was working at IBM when I realized that,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and IBM, I said, when I realized that this is
- 10:13Speaker 1: how they wanted to do IBM, they didn't want any
- 10:15Speaker 1: extra new ideas. That went, that's not my job. I
- 10:18Speaker 1: gotta go. And so you live in a space where
- 10:21Speaker 1: you can't be creative. And I talked about your journey
- 10:24Speaker 1: because you know, now being the star or a serious
- 10:28Speaker 1: reasonable doubt, there is another level of responsibility to come
- 10:32Speaker 1: to that. So let's go to the part when they
- 10:34Speaker 1: said you are the one to screens. Oh my god.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I talk about the audition process and how many times
- 10:41Speaker 1: you went in. Did you put it on tape when
- 10:43Speaker 1: you sit in? How did the guy? Did you get
- 10:44Speaker 1: this opportunity to be the start Reasonable Doubt, which is
- 10:47Speaker 1: now on Hulu. Um, well, you know it's that. It's
- 10:53Speaker 1: just another story because um when it came to me,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I was already ready to do another project. It was
- 11:01Speaker 1: signed and delivered. In my opinion, you know, I was
- 11:06Speaker 1: this was it, this is what I was doing. I
- 11:07Speaker 1: had already had a yes, I was ready to sign
- 11:09Speaker 1: and that was that. And then my team brought this
- 11:13Speaker 1: and said you should take a look at this, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: I told them, no, I don't need to take a
- 11:17Speaker 1: look at this. This is what I'm doing. I'm fine
- 11:19Speaker 1: with this and that is it. But they were persistent,
- 11:22Speaker 1: and I think maybe about two weeks or so went
- 11:24Speaker 1: by and they said, you need to read this. We
- 11:27Speaker 1: liked this too, but we think that this is really
- 11:29Speaker 1: the one. Um. But I was gonna have to fight
- 11:32Speaker 1: for this one, and I just didn't know if I
- 11:35Speaker 1: wanted to fight for it. I had this one that
- 11:37Speaker 1: was great. I'm gonna do that. UM. But once I've
- 11:40Speaker 1: read it that, I just changed everything. I saw what
- 11:44Speaker 1: they saw, UM, and I said, well, in me, you're
- 11:46Speaker 1: gonna have to just pull it out of you right
- 11:48Speaker 1: now and do it. Because I didn't feel like I
- 11:50Speaker 1: had it in that moment. I was in a space where,
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, the other opportunity I had was great, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, there was no need to have to go
- 11:58Speaker 1: and fight for something else. And but once it became
- 12:02Speaker 1: clear that that's what I was gonna have to do,
- 12:03Speaker 1: that was it. That was it, you know. So I
- 12:05Speaker 1: went in. This is obviously during pandemic still, so everything
- 12:08Speaker 1: is zoom UM. And so I had an initial meeting
- 12:12Speaker 1: with UM, with with the team, with carry and everyone UM.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And then I did the first audition on tape and
- 12:20Speaker 1: UM in the middle of the audition and my camera
- 12:23Speaker 1: went out, bump went out, and I just said, you
- 12:25Speaker 1: know what, that's it. You just rest up the whole thing.
- 12:27Speaker 1: You should have just been up, you know, UM. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: you know, by the time it did come back going eventually,
- 12:33Speaker 1: and you know, I finished finish it, and after I finished,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I felt, you know what I mean, I think you
- 12:40Speaker 1: I think you got that. I don't know. I mean,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I know the camera went out. You know, I'm having
- 12:43Speaker 1: this whole internal monologue, but I felt like that like
- 12:46Speaker 1: I had, you know, and I went to my to
- 12:48Speaker 1: my prayer closet, as I tend to do, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and just kind of left it there. And then I
- 12:53Speaker 1: find out that I remember maybe a few days after that,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and um, carry and everyone called me. And I didn't
- 12:59Speaker 1: know that's why they were calling me. I thought they
- 13:01Speaker 1: were just calling me, you know, and and uh, they
- 13:04Speaker 1: did the face some video and that's when they told
- 13:07Speaker 1: me I got the parts. And then not to mention.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I find out later from Ramla, you know when your
- 13:12Speaker 1: video went out, we already knew you had the part
- 13:14Speaker 1: by that time. You know, we had another lesson, you
- 13:18Speaker 1: know what I mean, just just trust the process, trust
- 13:21Speaker 1: what you what you're doing. Because she said, yeah, we
- 13:23Speaker 1: were all commenced. I was it. You didn't even need
- 13:25Speaker 1: to come back on the screen. Um. So that was
- 13:29Speaker 1: that was it. That was the process. The next thing
- 13:31Speaker 1: I know, we're gearing up to start filming. Okay, Loud,
- 13:34Speaker 1: did you know a little history about it? You know,
- 13:39Speaker 1: she didn't want to be a lawyers. She always wanted
- 13:41Speaker 1: to be a lawyer on TV. Okay had a law
- 13:44Speaker 1: firm all picked up. But guess what law firms picked
- 13:47Speaker 1: out on TV? Um this character you said, you said
- 13:52Speaker 1: you saw it. I gotta be This is a character
- 13:54Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta push myself. Talk tell us about
- 13:57Speaker 1: this character, ye that you play as the attorneys Atorney
- 14:00Speaker 1: Jack's as short, there's a nickname that it's called j
- 14:03Speaker 1: X on this show. And why you went, I gotta
- 14:07Speaker 1: be Attorney steward Man for the same reasons that all
- 14:13Speaker 1: of you have seen the show. When you watched the pilot,
- 14:15Speaker 1: That's what I felt when I when I read it,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it was just so exciting. Um it was. It had
- 14:24Speaker 1: a kinetic energy to it that I hadn't felt in
- 14:26Speaker 1: a long time. And this lead character, Jack's hadn't seen
- 14:31Speaker 1: a woman like her in this way on TV. You know,
- 14:35Speaker 1: we've thankfully, we've had a lot of strong black women
- 14:38Speaker 1: on TV, you know, especially the number one being you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: um Carry with Olivia Pope or what happened. We've had
- 14:44Speaker 1: quite a few, um, but Jack's is very different. Jack
- 14:49Speaker 1: stands in a league of her own, and she's very
- 14:51Speaker 1: different from the others that we've had, and that attributed
- 14:55Speaker 1: to Ramla and the way that she's crafty, this this story,
- 14:58Speaker 1: in this world around Jack. You know, we get to
- 15:00Speaker 1: see her interpersonal life in a way that we don't
- 15:04Speaker 1: often get to see with black women, especially professional black women,
- 15:08Speaker 1: who are supposed to be just polished and put together
- 15:11Speaker 1: and you know, you don't have time for any of
- 15:13Speaker 1: the any of the mess, any rough ends. And we
- 15:15Speaker 1: get to see all of her you know, rough edges
- 15:18Speaker 1: and all of the mess and coming up part of
- 15:20Speaker 1: the seams. And that is what I love the most
- 15:23Speaker 1: about Jack's because that's that's life. You know. Those are
- 15:26Speaker 1: the women that I know who are trying to juggle
- 15:28Speaker 1: a marriage, a career, a family, you know, dynamics with
- 15:32Speaker 1: with your parents, you know, girlfriends, all of the things,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and maybe not holding all the balls up in the
- 15:39Speaker 1: air at the same time, you know, because that's part
- 15:41Speaker 1: of the burden of being a woman, and part of
- 15:44Speaker 1: the burden of being a black woman for sure, is
- 15:46Speaker 1: that we have to keep all the balls up in
- 15:48Speaker 1: the air. Um, So we get to see Jack trying
- 15:51Speaker 1: to figure out what happens when a few of them
- 15:53Speaker 1: start to fall. We'll be right back with more money
- 15:56Speaker 1: making conversations. Master Class with Rushan McDonald. Now let's return
- 16:02Speaker 1: to money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. There's three
- 16:07Speaker 1: friends of mine that you remind me of because of
- 16:11Speaker 1: their life. You know, high profile attorneys. I know that,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I know that culture surrounded by white men, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 1: want to be partners or our partners at these law firms.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But the part that really separates is that this is
- 16:25Speaker 1: a very sexually aware of character. So who she is,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and I think that's that's what really separates it from
- 16:32Speaker 1: a lot of other characters that you've seen white are
- 16:35Speaker 1: Black on TV, is that this character is willing to
- 16:38Speaker 1: go there and when that was part of the script,
- 16:42Speaker 1: what ran through your mind? And I'm not saying anything
- 16:44Speaker 1: selations anybody, but she knows what I'm talking about. This
- 16:46Speaker 1: is a character that understands she's beautiful, understand what she wants.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Sometimes she made demand what she wants and she will
- 16:54Speaker 1: be frustrated and she doesn't get what she wants and
- 16:56Speaker 1: later be known. But more importantly, that's what successful people do.
- 17:00Speaker 1: But usually there's a man that's doing it. In your case,
- 17:04Speaker 1: your woman, did that play on in your mind like that? Well? Yes,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you know because just being a woman, especially again a
- 17:13Speaker 1: black woman on TV. We don't get to live in
- 17:15Speaker 1: that kind of space, you know, generally is you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: the the white actresses who get to have all of
- 17:21Speaker 1: the mess and everything going on and you know, sexually
- 17:24Speaker 1: free and what happened without any judgment and at times, um,
- 17:28Speaker 1: there there's judgment that can be attached, you know, And
- 17:31Speaker 1: so with this they're just there's such a relatability to
- 17:37Speaker 1: to Jack's you know, um that a lot of women
- 17:40Speaker 1: have said that they that they feel you know about
- 17:42Speaker 1: her in her um, in her freedom of being, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 1: very aware of her sexuality or what have you, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and that's what is most exciting to me because women
- 17:51Speaker 1: are connected to that very thing, and that is the
- 17:54Speaker 1: very thing. When I read the script, I said, oh
- 17:56Speaker 1: my god, you know, because I'm not necessarily as you know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: free as that, um I look forward to to to
- 18:06Speaker 1: play with you know, because that is life, you know
- 18:09Speaker 1: what I mean. And we find ourselves in these situations
- 18:12Speaker 1: and what are you going to do it? So it's
- 18:14Speaker 1: fun to see how Jack's navigates the world. I love.
- 18:18Speaker 1: She said, say, look, I'm free, but ain't that it's free?
- 18:22Speaker 1: I'm not just freaking but I'll be stopping the streets.
- 18:25Speaker 1: This is a character I play with TV. Now, don't
- 18:26Speaker 1: be messing with me. Now, let's be clear. Let's be clear.
- 18:29Speaker 1: This is a character. Jack Stewart is a character I got,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I got, I got. I play a different car, different cars.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And that's what I love about the character. I love
- 18:38Speaker 1: about the fact that you know there there's a lot
- 18:41Speaker 1: of mystery with the men in your life too. Okay,
- 18:44Speaker 1: you know your husband there, I really don't understand him.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I really don't get him. And then Michael Eally, I
- 18:51Speaker 1: really don't understand him either. When you're in and then
- 18:56Speaker 1: when you're in the boardroom with the white men, they
- 19:00Speaker 1: ain't be nervous. There's a little edge to you, you know. So,
- 19:04Speaker 1: so if you can and you can kind of wrap
- 19:06Speaker 1: me up. First of all, the start with your not
- 19:08Speaker 1: trying to give away much of us the plot line
- 19:10Speaker 1: at all, but there is an interesting relationship with there.
- 19:13Speaker 1: We used the word marriage in here, but it's not
- 19:15Speaker 1: really a marriage in the story. And then Elie, who's
- 19:19Speaker 1: introduced basically in a lot of half of the pilot,
- 19:22Speaker 1: there's something dynamic there and he's he wants to leave jail.
- 19:28Speaker 1: And then the men that you work with. And then, uh,
- 19:32Speaker 1: you know, it's really I I would just tell you something.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Your skill level, it's fantastic. You do with a natural
- 19:40Speaker 1: confidence and sexuality that is not offensive. But we know
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's there. We know you, BEAUTI we know you. You
- 19:47Speaker 1: know you you struct your stuff while you have the
- 19:49Speaker 1: ability to do it. But it has nothing to do it.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I can be me. But it does impact your your husband,
- 19:55Speaker 1: it does impact this job, and also Michael Eally and
- 19:58Speaker 1: his decision making. Le's start with your husband. Well, you know,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I have to disagree with you when you say you
- 20:04Speaker 1: know that it's it's not a marriage. It is a marriage,
- 20:07Speaker 1: and I think it represents a lot of the marriages
- 20:10Speaker 1: right now, you know where you just don't even know
- 20:14Speaker 1: anymore what's wrong. But something is wrong. You can't quite
- 20:17Speaker 1: put your finger on it. It's been so many things
- 20:20Speaker 1: building up and it's just you you don't even know anymore. Um.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And that's kind of what what Jackson Lewis are going
- 20:26Speaker 1: through right now, you know. And and when the show starts,
- 20:28Speaker 1: they are separated, um, and they're trying to figure out
- 20:32Speaker 1: do they have something to get back too. But in
- 20:35Speaker 1: the midst of that they don't even know. They don't know,
- 20:40Speaker 1: you know. And that's what I love about the representation
- 20:42Speaker 1: of their marriage is because I think it's very realistic,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, because you just don't you you're you aren't
- 20:48Speaker 1: quite always able to put your finger on the thing.
- 20:50Speaker 1: It's not just you know, you didn't squeeze the toothpaste up,
- 20:53Speaker 1: you didn't put the toilet down. You know, it's a
- 20:55Speaker 1: it's a series of things that have now gotten you
- 20:58Speaker 1: to this point where you know, you're say it about
- 21:00Speaker 1: throwing it all the way. UM. And I do think
- 21:03Speaker 1: that Jackson's um her confidence, you know, Um, the very
- 21:09Speaker 1: things that make her the woman that she is in
- 21:12Speaker 1: her career can kind of cause a bit of friction
- 21:15Speaker 1: in her marriage, you know, because she's she can just
- 21:19Speaker 1: steamroll and go, you know, straight ahead and not realize
- 21:22Speaker 1: that she may be hurting people in the process. UM.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And I think as it pertains to to to damon
- 21:28Speaker 1: you know, that's a relationship where you know, professionally, UM,
- 21:33Speaker 1: they have this this history, you know, and you start
- 21:35Speaker 1: to see over the course of the show, UM, a
- 21:38Speaker 1: lot of different things come out that are informing um
- 21:42Speaker 1: who they are where they are now. UM. So I'm
- 21:46Speaker 1: stillna leave the damon one right there. I'll tell you something,
- 21:50Speaker 1: my fans. I'm telling fans, listen to me now when
- 21:53Speaker 1: you watch reasonable Doubts starting Emmy, I'll take car nowity
- 21:57Speaker 1: it's oh Lou, you're gonna see the pile of problem.
- 22:00Speaker 1: The second episode would probably have air um for four
- 22:04Speaker 1: episodes apologize right, that's correct, and uh, I just I
- 22:08Speaker 1: just saw that they just sent them all to me,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and so I'm just watching them. So I don't know
- 22:12Speaker 1: when they're aired or not, but just don't currently on
- 22:15Speaker 1: Hulu right now streaming. Now the marriage, I want you
- 22:20Speaker 1: to tell me what y'all think of that marriage? Okay,
- 22:23Speaker 1: I want y'all tell I want y'all tell tell em
- 22:26Speaker 1: on on social media what y'all think of that? Man,
- 22:28Speaker 1: It's just isn't a traditional marriage. Isn't a typical marriage
- 22:31Speaker 1: like you just exposed to us on our show, Rishan said, maybe.
- 22:37Speaker 1: But more importantly, you, my friend, are a star. Let
- 22:42Speaker 1: me go. Let me gonna get your flowers. Okay, get
- 22:45Speaker 1: your flowers. I can't take my eyes off on your screen.
- 22:48Speaker 1: That's a positive. I don't know who you are, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: that's a mystery to the character when I say that's
- 22:53Speaker 1: a good thing, because I don't know where you're going sometimes,
- 22:55Speaker 1: you know, I feel that your character exudes confidence and
- 22:59Speaker 1: Kennon inmidate, which is support the character is supposed to
- 23:01Speaker 1: do when you're certain environments and they don't want to
- 23:04Speaker 1: talk to you while you're there, and you and feel
- 23:07Speaker 1: compromised because women have been talking in a certain way
- 23:09Speaker 1: in the boys club, not they have a powerful female
- 23:12Speaker 1: in the room and they don't want to always talk
- 23:14Speaker 1: like they want to talk in the boys club. But
- 23:17Speaker 1: what you're doing is changing television in a good way.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And uh, I can all I can say is being
- 23:23Speaker 1: the star of reasonable doubt working to a good friend
- 23:25Speaker 1: of mine Michael Eally, directed and produced by Kara Washington
- 23:29Speaker 1: Larry Willmore. You're surrounded by talent that people who have
- 23:32Speaker 1: a history of creative success, and you just shining light
- 23:36Speaker 1: for the next level of stars. Uh, not only with
- 23:39Speaker 1: your skin tone, I don't know what your your talent,
- 23:41Speaker 1: but not only with the ability to be able to communicate.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Do not stop and keep growing your brand. Thank you
- 23:48Speaker 1: so much. I appreciate that. Well, I appreciate more that
- 23:50Speaker 1: I can get to watch you and streaming Hulu. She
- 23:53Speaker 1: said my name correctly. I said her name colors the
- 23:55Speaker 1: way I think I think we want on this show. Right, listen,
- 23:59Speaker 1: we've really did so again Hulu. Reasonable doubts started. Mean,
- 24:05Speaker 1: y'all say Carnaldi and my boy Michael ellis coming in.
- 24:08Speaker 1: He's coming in strong. He's coming in strong. And I
- 24:10Speaker 1: worked with him and he did my two of my
- 24:12Speaker 1: movies Thinking like a Man, Thinking like a Man too.
- 24:14Speaker 1: That's our history. So y'all, you keep winning. We're talking
- 24:16Speaker 1: to it, okay, keep being the start. Thank you and
- 24:20Speaker 1: thank you for coming on. Money making a conversation masterclass
