- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest. He's live in studio, which is always fantastic.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The game of basketball has been very, very good to.
- 0:07Speaker 1: My next guest is the former NBA All Star If
- 0:10Speaker 1: I if I say anything wrong, check me okay, correct you, okay,
- 0:13Speaker 1: World champion with the San Antonio Spurs, Olympian businessman, broadcaster, philanthropers.
- 0:20Speaker 1: After playing fourteen season in the NBA, he became You
- 0:23Speaker 1: can see him in popular TV commercials, which I always
- 0:26Speaker 1: enjoy him and he looks so relaxed because I can't act,
- 0:29Speaker 1: So whenever I see anybody looking at that relaxed, I
- 0:31Speaker 1: always go, what are you doing? Back college basketball? Seeing
- 0:36Speaker 1: nightly on NBA TV and some cold suit you know,
- 0:39Speaker 1: you know how the cold suit on the day, but
- 0:41Speaker 1: he got the cold suit on NBA today, uh TV.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversations. Steve Smith. Appreciate, thank you,
- 0:47Speaker 1: thanks for having me. I like that. You can do
- 0:49Speaker 1: that again, absolutely, But you're not the cold suit on
- 0:52Speaker 1: with a little you know, square and everything. So, so
- 0:55Speaker 1: what is the image of Steve Smith? What is Steve's brain?
- 0:58Speaker 1: I guess I can say I would say Steve Smith
- 1:00Speaker 1: brand is just being himself, a humble person for that voice.
- 1:04Speaker 1: He already got the voice. He went into Steve Smith voice.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's just a natural, just a natural, just a natural.
- 1:08Speaker 1: My friend, just kid from the east side of Detroit,
- 1:12Speaker 1: got a chance because of that around basketball you talked about,
- 1:15Speaker 1: got a chance to take me around the world. And
- 1:17Speaker 1: obviously for me, um, it's taken me where. I still
- 1:20Speaker 1: haven't had a job. I always tell people, haven't got
- 1:22Speaker 1: a job yet because I'm doing stuff I love and
- 1:24Speaker 1: dreamed to do. So dreamed of playing in the NBA,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and obviously that dream came true. Never thought and dreamed
- 1:29Speaker 1: of being broadcasting. But that was something I said, that'd
- 1:32Speaker 1: be a fun job. And but how did that? How
- 1:34Speaker 1: did that happen? Because you said you never thought because
- 1:36Speaker 1: you just athlete, correct more than just an athlete. But
- 1:40Speaker 1: I think, Um, at the end of my career, never
- 1:42Speaker 1: thought I'd being broadcasting. I was sitting at the restaurant
- 1:44Speaker 1: and some of alternery executives were there that I got
- 1:46Speaker 1: a chance to meet and be around because I'm here
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the landing, played here, and they said, Steve, would
- 1:50Speaker 1: you want to be in broadcasting? I said, no, no, no,
- 1:52Speaker 1: not at all, that's not for me. I didn't go
- 1:54Speaker 1: over to school for that. They said why not? And
- 1:55Speaker 1: that the reason they caught me, because they said why not?
- 1:58Speaker 1: I didn't have an answer for so went in and
- 2:00Speaker 1: did a demo and obviously they said, uh, we think
- 2:03Speaker 1: you'd be good. Why don't you think about staying in
- 2:04Speaker 1: basketball and covering the Hawks? And I tell people, boy,
- 2:08Speaker 1: coming to Hawks at that time, they couldn't win a game.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yet to come up with stories, you had to come
- 2:12Speaker 1: up with different people. You just had to come on
- 2:17Speaker 1: and just to keep talking about basketball. I think it
- 2:19Speaker 1: expanded me as a broadcast for a team that wasn't
- 2:22Speaker 1: doing well at the time. Okay, So so here's something
- 2:24Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about as education, because of my
- 2:27Speaker 1: degree is in mathematics and it took me seven years
- 2:29Speaker 1: to get my degree. Okay, but I thought, I always
- 2:31Speaker 1: tell people that you can't repole education, and so you
- 2:34Speaker 1: went back and got your degree. My mom a promise.
- 2:38Speaker 1: When I got a chance to go to Michigan State
- 2:40Speaker 1: University my junior year, I had this little thought that
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was gonna come out and my dad and they said, no,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you're not coming out earlier, going all four years and
- 2:47Speaker 1: then obviously when I finished, I only had eleven credits left,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and you know, you started procrasting. I'm gonna do that
- 2:53Speaker 1: in the summer. Summer started to go on. But my
- 2:56Speaker 1: mom eventually, you know, my rookie year past, and I
- 2:59Speaker 1: always had that waste in my mind, you're going back
- 3:01Speaker 1: getting your degree. And so then after the time it
- 3:04Speaker 1: really hit me was when my kids said, Dad, you
- 3:08Speaker 1: don't have your degree. Because I say, hey, you're going
- 3:09Speaker 1: to college getting your drie. They said, you don't have
- 3:11Speaker 1: your degree. So that was the kicking my butt to
- 3:13Speaker 1: make me go back. And you can't talking nor if
- 3:15Speaker 1: you're not applying it yourself. And I say, the hardest
- 3:18Speaker 1: thing just having leven credits left. It seemed like that
- 3:20Speaker 1: was nothing when I first left, I go back and
- 3:22Speaker 1: do it. After years, kept going and going. You always
- 3:24Speaker 1: made excuse. But after the kids, in that little voice,
- 3:27Speaker 1: my mom made me go back. Well, it is important
- 3:29Speaker 1: to you. You know the reason I like it because
- 3:31Speaker 1: that means your goal. Person, the goals are important to you.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It's important you in athletics, and then in this part
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's important you in life. Because of the fact that
- 3:38Speaker 1: I would tell me, if you set a goal, you
- 3:40Speaker 1: can actually you know, you can actually hold people accountable.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And so once you got that degree, you can start
- 3:45Speaker 1: holding your kids accountable for sure. I mean I could
- 3:48Speaker 1: stick my chest out and so you have to. But
- 3:52Speaker 1: I would say more than just that degree, just having
- 3:54Speaker 1: that experience being on that college campus, and UM, I
- 3:57Speaker 1: tell you, I'll take that into the next segment. That
- 3:59Speaker 1: was the reason why I started by Steve Smith Scholarship Fund,
- 4:02Speaker 1: talking about we're talking about we're talking about I'm back home,
- 4:06Speaker 1: speaking obviously about basketball to the entire high school, my
- 4:09Speaker 1: high school, Persian High School, and a young lady stood
- 4:12Speaker 1: up and said, Steve, you know, I want to go
- 4:13Speaker 1: to college. I don't have enough funds and money and
- 4:17Speaker 1: financially means to go to college. I did everything everybody
- 4:20Speaker 1: told me to do. I'm a four point old students.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I'm only missed class two or three times in my
- 4:24Speaker 1: entire school, and uh, I don't have enough money to
- 4:27Speaker 1: go to school, and how can I go without athletics?
- 4:29Speaker 1: And that's when it started to me I needed to
- 4:31Speaker 1: help and do something to have kids from my high school,
- 4:33Speaker 1: my community. The first reaching your own personal pocket. Yeah
- 4:36Speaker 1: you did, I had to write. So what triggered that
- 4:39Speaker 1: next step? You know, it's getting other people involved and
- 4:41Speaker 1: getting them involved in the point of say, I can't
- 4:44Speaker 1: do this by myself. What pushed that? What that opportunity
- 4:47Speaker 1: did in your mind? I think anything, you know, this
- 4:50Speaker 1: is being successful. You're not going to ever do it alone.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think for me, it was my you know I
- 4:53Speaker 1: call it team Smith, my parents, you know, my mom's
- 4:56Speaker 1: voice even though she's passed, my dad, my parents, my wife,
- 5:00Speaker 1: my community, understanding that this is something I wanted to do.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And then obviously reaching in that that pocket is uh,
- 5:07Speaker 1: it was I got that look for my wife, you're
- 5:11Speaker 1: about to donate how much? Two point five million dollars?
- 5:13Speaker 1: He said, why? And after you explain why, it all
- 5:17Speaker 1: makes sense. And for me it was something I wanted
- 5:19Speaker 1: to do. And like I said, always had that voice
- 5:21Speaker 1: with my mom in my head. And that's and so
- 5:22Speaker 1: how I has basketball being u because the beauty about
- 5:27Speaker 1: you is superstar in college, we got to say that, uh, superstar,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you don't be then all star not being a superstar
- 5:32Speaker 1: and the NBA Olympian that's you know, that's rare opportunity
- 5:37Speaker 1: right there. How has that helped you in life? Being
- 5:40Speaker 1: that successful? And then and then like you said, somebody
- 5:43Speaker 1: approached you by being uh an, so you went, oh,
- 5:46Speaker 1: that's not me. And so now you're so successful in
- 5:49Speaker 1: this world. How's that happening? You know? I think he
- 5:52Speaker 1: goes back, Um, you know their voices from my mom.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But then on the other side, as my dad thirty
- 5:57Speaker 1: seven years, he drove the city city of Detroit, US
- 6:00Speaker 1: hard work, watching them get up at four o'clock in
- 6:03Speaker 1: the morning, coming back at nine o'clock at night. He
- 6:05Speaker 1: drove the bus with thirty seven years. So I made
- 6:07Speaker 1: him retire just hard work. And I think whenever you
- 6:10Speaker 1: put your mind to someone, you start to put in
- 6:12Speaker 1: your stamp where you're gonna go in, and you gotta
- 6:14Speaker 1: put in more work than anybody else to be successful.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And I think you never measure yourself on I want
- 6:18Speaker 1: to be better than you. I want to be better
- 6:20Speaker 1: than you. You want to be the best version of
- 6:21Speaker 1: yourself by putting in hard work. Okay, Steve Smith the
- 6:24Speaker 1: personality that that's the person that I see on TV
- 6:27Speaker 1: these commercials. You seem so see I'm just gonna get
- 6:30Speaker 1: into Steves. See you're the guy keeps saying, but you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I just want to play basketball. I just wanted but
- 6:35Speaker 1: you're so natural, Steve, I'm mad at it because you
- 6:38Speaker 1: can do so many good things that are natural. Why
- 6:42Speaker 1: why you know that's don't worry about that. Don't worry
- 6:46Speaker 1: about you can't do everything there but I can't add though,
- 6:50Speaker 1: But I didn't stop me from making money, So you're natural.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Talking about that whole process, because I'm sure when people
- 6:57Speaker 1: approach you by commercials, it was a doubt in your head.
- 7:00Speaker 1: People approach you about being on TV at the national
- 7:03Speaker 1: of covering college basketball, sideline reporting, there were always doubts,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and I always trying to use this show to break
- 7:11Speaker 1: through those doubts, break through those those moments where you
- 7:13Speaker 1: are afraid, but you broke through. Why you gotta try.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I mean, that's the one thing is you're not gonna
- 7:19Speaker 1: succeed unless you try. And I think always it's a
- 7:22Speaker 1: wisdom going out there and talking to people. Always say
- 7:24Speaker 1: tell kids, seek wisdoms, Seek people like yourself to get
- 7:27Speaker 1: a chance to been there before you ask people, ask questions.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And I think more importantly is when you define yourself.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's hard to mess up being you. If you just
- 7:35Speaker 1: be yourself, whether it's good or bad, as smiles, as eyes,
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's always gonna be true to you. So I always
- 7:40Speaker 1: I guess probably myself on being me. Where the cool
- 7:43Speaker 1: thing about it is that? And I guess the cool
- 7:45Speaker 1: that that that the I guess the all the part
- 7:48Speaker 1: that you were playing it out on a large stage,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you know, I guess you can say you know when
- 7:52Speaker 1: you were doing it for the Hawks when nobody watching,
- 7:54Speaker 1: because that was good, good good good training ground, great
- 7:59Speaker 1: training ground. But when you when when when the stage
- 8:01Speaker 1: kept getting bigger and having an opinion because you know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: as an analyst you have to have an opinion. You
- 8:05Speaker 1: have to meet these same players. You have to couch.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You know, you have to be relevant because you know,
- 8:10Speaker 1: as as a fan, we can see through going A's
- 8:11Speaker 1: saying that right, So so as as an analyst, how
- 8:14Speaker 1: did you gauge that maintaining I gotta tell the truth
- 8:18Speaker 1: but also maintain the relationship or doesn't matter, No, it
- 8:21Speaker 1: does matter. I think first of all, is I just
- 8:23Speaker 1: love the game of basketball since three or four years old.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Was always I've always had a ball in my hand.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And then I think I'm gonna watch it at the
- 8:30Speaker 1: high school level, I'm gonna play it. I'm anna coaching
- 8:33Speaker 1: and doesn't have anything to do with finances. I would
- 8:35Speaker 1: have played this game just because of love of it.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I think the next part about it is I'm always
- 8:39Speaker 1: around it. I've been around a U, I've been around kids.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I keep in touch with all my friends and found
- 8:44Speaker 1: it around the country about kids in this game of basketball.
- 8:47Speaker 1: And so for me to get a chance to be
- 8:49Speaker 1: on TV, I'm just naturally talking like we would be
- 8:51Speaker 1: talking we were at home. Some of those words that
- 8:54Speaker 1: you can't say on that keep you to keep you
- 8:56Speaker 1: lout of the pepper, I keep it all south, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: I just think, you know, being able to break down
- 9:02Speaker 1: the game from my eyes from a guy that's seen
- 9:04Speaker 1: in so many different ways, and obviously each year you
- 9:06Speaker 1: get more experience, it helps. And also staying relevant. You
- 9:09Speaker 1: gotta talk to the young group about the game of basketball.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Then obviously going to guys like George Gerband, Spencer Haywood,
- 9:15Speaker 1: guys that taught me the game from the City of
- 9:17Speaker 1: Trading and State of Michigan. You keep those two together
- 9:20Speaker 1: and you're somewhere in the middle. You always got to
- 9:22Speaker 1: talk to older guys who've done it because they have
- 9:23Speaker 1: their vision. Then my youngsters, the youngsters telling me about
- 9:27Speaker 1: the crossovers and different things. But you're like um an
- 9:30Speaker 1: icon because you've spent four years in college. That's where
- 9:33Speaker 1: coming in they mad because they got to go to
- 9:34Speaker 1: school for one year and then come in and they
- 9:37Speaker 1: they almost kind of like, well, the G League. I
- 9:40Speaker 1: know I'm cutting this question tight, but I want to
- 9:42Speaker 1: get a little thought all about coming to school early.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Are not going to school at all and going to
- 9:48Speaker 1: the NBA. Well, first of all, under the presently constructed rules,
- 9:52Speaker 1: if they stayed the same for college athletes, I think
- 9:54Speaker 1: they should be allowed to go, you know, from high
- 9:57Speaker 1: school to the pros. But now they can change some things.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I have so many ideas where I think, if you know,
- 10:02Speaker 1: first you should be able to get health insurance just
- 10:04Speaker 1: like a state worker and wherever state you're in. I
- 10:06Speaker 1: think also you should be able to put UM I guess,
- 10:09Speaker 1: pursue your UM degree and academically more than just a
- 10:12Speaker 1: four or five six years. I think it should be
- 10:14Speaker 1: ten year gap. Whether you get a chance with playing,
- 10:16Speaker 1: you still should have ten years to be able to
- 10:18Speaker 1: get your degree. So so many different things, but they
- 10:20Speaker 1: don't have those opportunities. I think they should be out
- 10:23Speaker 1: allowed to come out of high school. When we come back,
- 10:24Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the real estate. We're gonna
- 10:27Speaker 1: talk about the foundation in more detail, but also the
- 10:30Speaker 1: stops in your life and how you transitioned. And also
- 10:33Speaker 1: I want to talk about when a time when it
- 10:35Speaker 1: really was over with how what were your thoughts there.
- 10:38Speaker 1: But also I want to talk about why he don't
- 10:39Speaker 1: have a talk show, why he ain't hosting the game show,
- 10:42Speaker 1: why he ain't producing these big movies and everything. Because
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm sitting next to the next big star, his name
- 10:48Speaker 1: just having to be Steve. I can do something with Steve.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I do real good business with Steve's I'm back on
- 10:56Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. You're listening to your money making conversations. Sitting
- 10:59Speaker 1: next to me is entrepreneur Philanthropus um all Star. He
- 11:04Speaker 1: knows text met because he won a championship with Sam
- 11:06Speaker 1: Antonio Spirits. I'm from Houston, Texas, so we kind of
- 11:09Speaker 1: like a brother. Come on, man, Guacamola, come on, it's ridiculous.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm beyond text Max. I'm kind of like, if you
- 11:18Speaker 1: came by my house, you go, you kind of you're
- 11:19Speaker 1: kind of crazy. You're kind of crazy because nobody eats
- 11:22Speaker 1: this much Mexican food, But I do what's your favorite
- 11:25Speaker 1: place in Atlanta? Now? Okay, which is fine because that's
- 11:29Speaker 1: what you're doing. I already told you know you need
- 11:31Speaker 1: your talk show. Don't don't be don't don't don't like
- 11:34Speaker 1: to eat, don't act like I'm using. I'm stunned by
- 11:37Speaker 1: this reaction. You know, I'm gonna tell you something. And
- 11:39Speaker 1: this is nothing negative about Atlanta, Okay, but the best
- 11:42Speaker 1: eating places when we started off, he's got to be negative.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I gotta. I gotta say this now because a lot
- 11:48Speaker 1: of people, well, you ain't look here. I've lived in
- 11:50Speaker 1: Los Angeles. I've lived for the real in Chicago, I've
- 11:53Speaker 1: lived in New York, I've lived in Atlanta for real,
- 11:56Speaker 1: I've lived in Houston. Chicago is the best eating East.
- 12:01Speaker 1: That's always variety. I mean they really you want some
- 12:03Speaker 1: great pizza, you want the great steaks, you want the
- 12:05Speaker 1: great seafood, you want just the American dish. The best
- 12:09Speaker 1: breakfast places in the world are Chicago, by no Nobody
- 12:13Speaker 1: can compete with that in Chicago. Now when you come
- 12:15Speaker 1: to Atlanta, Bobby Q Jimmy Knicks hands down one of
- 12:20Speaker 1: the best chains you know. And I would recommend people
- 12:24Speaker 1: to go to as far as text next. Kids can't
- 12:26Speaker 1: be used to man just cannot be Houston now and
- 12:28Speaker 1: now it's it's a place pure pure taco. They're good
- 12:32Speaker 1: here in their land. They're good here. Pure Taco is
- 12:35Speaker 1: really good here because they because they because they chips
- 12:37Speaker 1: are soft, little little little salt on a little little
- 12:43Speaker 1: little salt on it. But but the sauce is the key,
- 12:45Speaker 1: the pika, the guyo that has to be also. See
- 12:49Speaker 1: that makes see I'm tasting your chips can't be hard
- 12:52Speaker 1: and your sauce a rough. You know what I'm saying.
- 12:54Speaker 1: You gotta make sure it's right. So Pure Taco is
- 12:56Speaker 1: one of the best in the city. Um, but I'm
- 12:58Speaker 1: gonna tell you if you want to go and get
- 13:00Speaker 1: a nice little guacamola uh sauca mix, go to Sprouts.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Uh they have this. You can go in the back
- 13:07Speaker 1: of the store. They have a guacamola sauca mix. Fantastic,
- 13:11Speaker 1: little spicy, but it's the best. Get you some light
- 13:14Speaker 1: chips on the sheriff when you go out, and brother,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you're having your own, your own Mexican party at your house.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Text mix, So you'n't talking me about some food. Man,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm a war winning banker. You may not know that, man,
- 13:24Speaker 1: So you start talking about some food, We're gonna lose
- 13:26Speaker 1: this conversation real fast because I just get lose my mind.
- 13:28Speaker 1: So so with that being said, let's go back to you, Mr. Mr.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Interview with Sean McDonald RA Sean mcdal's Money Making Conversation show.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Let's talk about that big donation you made at two
- 13:38Speaker 1: point five million that Like, when you make a donation
- 13:40Speaker 1: like that, people go, oh, how are you gonna pay
- 13:43Speaker 1: for this? So where do you get the money? Oh?
- 13:45Speaker 1: He rich? When you open your doors like that, or
- 13:49Speaker 1: making the donation the flood age open, how do you
- 13:52Speaker 1: stop the flood age? But also how you stay true
- 13:54Speaker 1: to your commitment? Well, I think, first of all, the
- 13:57Speaker 1: commitment was something that you you don't don't make more myself,
- 14:00Speaker 1: you just don't make that commitment, but I'll doing your
- 14:02Speaker 1: homework and understanding how you're gonna do it. And obviously
- 14:04Speaker 1: was a collaboration and what I mean by collaborations from
- 14:08Speaker 1: the state of Michigan, from my community, from Michigan State University,
- 14:11Speaker 1: from my family and honor my mom. And obviously you
- 14:14Speaker 1: get a chance to just like I said, go seek
- 14:16Speaker 1: that wisdom and I have great business guys, if one
- 14:20Speaker 1: game up with the idea. Obviously, Um, they said, Michigan
- 14:23Speaker 1: State wants to do a student academic Center's okay, come in.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Then they said, Steve, want you to donate two point
- 14:27Speaker 1: five million dollars and let me hang up on them first.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Because when you start to think about the impact it had,
- 14:34Speaker 1: not for myself but just for my community. For a
- 14:36Speaker 1: kid from Detroit Persian from the East Side to get
- 14:39Speaker 1: a chance to have a building on Michigan State campus, um,
- 14:42Speaker 1: to name it from my mom who didn't attend Michigan
- 14:44Speaker 1: State University, something that her legacy can can live on.
- 14:47Speaker 1: What gives me chills. Right now, my son is probably
- 14:50Speaker 1: my mom's building right now for the finals week. He's
- 14:52Speaker 1: a freshman at Michigan State. So to have that legacy
- 14:55Speaker 1: for him to call me and say, you know, I
- 14:57Speaker 1: never met Mama Bell, but for me to be in
- 15:00Speaker 1: here special, for me to get a chance to be
- 15:01Speaker 1: studying and my grandmother's building, So that legacy and obviously
- 15:05Speaker 1: what is done. As you guys know, we all are
- 15:07Speaker 1: not gonna make it pro but you can obviously kids
- 15:11Speaker 1: from Michigan State University nine and ninety six of them.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Percent of them gonna graduate if you go through my
- 15:16Speaker 1: mom's building as a student athlete. So that's what I
- 15:18Speaker 1: wanted to do to have guys have and young ladies
- 15:21Speaker 1: have a help for them to be able to get
- 15:24Speaker 1: a chance to graduate in further day education and get
- 15:26Speaker 1: that education, just like you gave the athletic ability to
- 15:28Speaker 1: Michigan State. So but you do annual golf tournament, can
- 15:33Speaker 1: you continually raise funds to continue to provide scholarships? Talk
- 15:36Speaker 1: about that? Well, we started about twenty years ago. This
- 15:38Speaker 1: is a twenty year anniversary and obviously awful golfer. I
- 15:42Speaker 1: was still am but I'm getting better. But I'm okay,
- 15:44Speaker 1: but I'm a competitive I can't you can't sing, I
- 15:46Speaker 1: can't play golf. Okay, God, but it gets a chance
- 15:50Speaker 1: to raise money. I had one in Lands and Grand Rapids, Detroit,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and now we've condensed this to Grand Rapids right now
- 15:56Speaker 1: to twenty year, we get about six hundred golfer, six
- 15:59Speaker 1: hundred fift golfers to get a chance a lot. That's
- 16:02Speaker 1: that's a lot of people. It didn't start off like that.
- 16:07Speaker 1: People do we get about six hundred sixty, six hundred
- 16:10Speaker 1: fifty people to get a chance to come out and
- 16:11Speaker 1: have a good time. And one thing I like about
- 16:13Speaker 1: it about of them are repeat to come back and
- 16:17Speaker 1: just believe it in raising money for kids to get
- 16:20Speaker 1: a chance to further the education, because I think education
- 16:23Speaker 1: is equalizing and obviously you know experience and education. You
- 16:27Speaker 1: get a chance to go on campus and get an education.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's not just that degree, that experience with different cultures,
- 16:32Speaker 1: because it was it was a shell shock for me
- 16:34Speaker 1: coming to Detroit, going to Michigan State Universary. It's huge.
- 16:38Speaker 1: It's big. I'm used to this a certain type of way,
- 16:41Speaker 1: but it broadens the horizons, get you expand yourself and
- 16:43Speaker 1: get a chance to see other things. And so so
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's a lot I want just change. But with charity
- 16:49Speaker 1: golf tournament to go, that's an amazing number. And that's
- 16:51Speaker 1: that's a testament to the quality and the fact it's
- 16:54Speaker 1: going into the twentieth year. Let you know that's consistent.
- 16:58Speaker 1: How could I could? It's just nobody can sign up? Now,
- 17:01Speaker 1: are you still we? We we we still might find
- 17:03Speaker 1: a way. Okay, cool, We'll tell us how we can
- 17:05Speaker 1: get in touch with Steve Smith's charity fund dot org
- 17:08Speaker 1: is a definitely a way, but just going through obviously
- 17:11Speaker 1: West Michigan, I mean Grand Rapids, Uh, their their website,
- 17:15Speaker 1: but the Steve Smith Charitable Fund dot org you definitely
- 17:17Speaker 1: find all the information. Okay, real estate, tell us how
- 17:20Speaker 1: you got started, how you got started in there? Well,
- 17:23Speaker 1: my guys, when I left Michigan State, I was uh
- 17:27Speaker 1: standing apartment uh and the management company is called DTM Management.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And then my business guys always told me that there's
- 17:34Speaker 1: a few things that you know, obviously it's not going anywhere.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You've never seen pretty much a university closed down. You
- 17:40Speaker 1: ever seen casinos closed down or hospitals? So put your money?
- 17:44Speaker 1: Which one would you want to do? Steve? And I
- 17:46Speaker 1: said university? That makes more sense to me. Your brand
- 17:50Speaker 1: when you look at it, there's always a kid wants
- 17:53Speaker 1: to have his wants to be at a university. They're
- 17:55Speaker 1: all from Michigan State is fifty some thousand. It's gonna
- 17:58Speaker 1: go to forty eight, but it's gonna be then forty
- 18:00Speaker 1: eight to fifty two thousand. Since I've been around, And
- 18:04Speaker 1: if you can have real estate around a university or
- 18:07Speaker 1: hospital or casino, those industries are pretty much not going anywhere.
- 18:11Speaker 1: So I bought my one unit right thirty three thousand
- 18:14Speaker 1: and nine, and every since then, I've been blind box
- 18:18Speaker 1: of a hundred units now every since then and you know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: we've we've done pretty good and it's still going. So
- 18:23Speaker 1: so you have a management company that handles that, the
- 18:25Speaker 1: DT in management and that's how that's how it works.
- 18:27Speaker 1: So that's how you're you're for raid, that's all. So
- 18:30Speaker 1: you're making money while you sleep. That's that's what I
- 18:32Speaker 1: want to do. So anyway, so you into the multiple
- 18:34Speaker 1: streams of income while sleeping, I want to work too hard.
- 18:39Speaker 1: That's another job. I want to keep these jobs well.
- 18:41Speaker 1: The beauty of what I always telling people is that
- 18:43Speaker 1: you know when you when you show up for a
- 18:45Speaker 1: basketball game or you're shore for an end ofview that's
- 18:48Speaker 1: called working wealthy. You know the wealth you're trying to get.
- 18:51Speaker 1: This what you're talking about with this real estate or
- 18:52Speaker 1: anything that you have about to always tell people that
- 18:55Speaker 1: that multiple stream of income makes you sleep comfortably and
- 18:58Speaker 1: also tells you you can say no yes comfortably and
- 19:01Speaker 1: say I don't feel like doing that comfortable because my time,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I love my time, your time and you can't. You
- 19:07Speaker 1: even used it on your golf game. I don't think
- 19:09Speaker 1: you said that, so I don't. So why do you
- 19:11Speaker 1: spend your time up here? Because I reasonally asked that,
- 19:13Speaker 1: is that what's the next stage in life for a successful,
- 19:16Speaker 1: a good looking guy. I appreciate that you made some glasses,
- 19:19Speaker 1: but still I cast people for a living. Okay, So
- 19:23Speaker 1: when you go, people approached you about hosting shows or producing, uh,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you know, any type of mediums today or you want
- 19:31Speaker 1: to go with your brain? You know what I haven't.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I'm sure people would. I just haven't opened that door
- 19:36Speaker 1: to him. I think for me is I've had that
- 19:38Speaker 1: door closed to a lot of different absolutes just because
- 19:40Speaker 1: my focus has been my kids. Focus has been my family,
- 19:44Speaker 1: and like you said, I've been comfortable, so I've been
- 19:46Speaker 1: able to I wouldn't say say no. First, I haven't
- 19:48Speaker 1: been out there searching and reaching. And then the money
- 19:51Speaker 1: doesn't drive me. That's one thing is I signed my
- 19:54Speaker 1: first rebouke contract was more than what my dad made. Absolutely,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and I'm not measuring myself to my dad. But alway,
- 20:00Speaker 1: they said, never chase it, never chase it organically, let
- 20:03Speaker 1: it come. And obviously put in hard work and that's
- 20:04Speaker 1: what's happening with your whole life. That's why you look
- 20:06Speaker 1: so comfortable. Next for me, though, entrepreneur, I want to
- 20:09Speaker 1: get more real estate for me and also kids, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: want to do camps all over the country for kids
- 20:14Speaker 1: and obviously UM provide somewhere. Can you say camps all
- 20:18Speaker 1: over the country that basketball camps, whether it's education camps,
- 20:22Speaker 1: love reading one of the Definitely. I want to have
- 20:24Speaker 1: one of those large book clubs where everybody understand kids.
- 20:27Speaker 1: If you can read, you almost can read yourself out
- 20:29Speaker 1: of poverty. You can read yourself out of problems, and
- 20:32Speaker 1: that's why I think kids can do well. You know something,
- 20:35Speaker 1: Are those in all those still in the planning stages?
- 20:38Speaker 1: Are you always in the planning stages? Okay, we gotta
- 20:40Speaker 1: moving from planning to action. There you go. You got
- 20:43Speaker 1: the goals you've never been Let them tell you something.
- 20:45Speaker 1: When you're sitting next to a successful person, Steve, you
- 20:48Speaker 1: realize that that's what they're gonna do. Surrounding yourself with
- 20:51Speaker 1: the right people will create that the next step. Because
- 20:54Speaker 1: you said that constantly, that you've never done anything by yourself, never,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and that's so so moving forward shooting, you know, shout
- 20:59Speaker 1: that basketball. Yeah, from from the baseline, from the corner, Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: from the from the elbow. You're very good man. I
- 21:06Speaker 1: want to thank you Steve Spith for coming on my show.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I just said, just sharing your story, man, I appreciate you.
- 21:11Speaker 1: You're amazing story. Well, you know, you're amazing guy. And uh,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I think that when people see this side of you,
- 21:17Speaker 1: it's a big blessing for them because they need to
- 21:19Speaker 1: know that there is an evolution and in the athletes
- 21:22Speaker 1: life and their evolutions is now affecting people in a
- 21:25Speaker 1: positive way. And I've gotten this story about your son
- 21:29Speaker 1: being in your his grandmother's building. That's um, I'm gonna
- 21:32Speaker 1: take that with me a long time. Thank you, sir,
- 21:36Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you,
