- 1:51Speaker 1: how are you doing? Hey? What's that enough hype for you?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Rodney did a good job. Here's this deal. Man. You
- 1:59Speaker 1: you're a superstar and I gotta treat you like that. Man.
- 2:02Speaker 1: But you know people see you what that helping on?
- 2:04Speaker 1: They just think you out there tackling people. You know
- 2:06Speaker 1: what I'm saying. But you got a lot going on
- 2:08Speaker 1: in your life, man, I want to talk about it
- 2:10Speaker 1: on the show. And uh and really, man, it's it's
- 2:13Speaker 1: just amazing to see your story because you come from
- 2:16Speaker 1: one of the story I say, story that said legendary
- 2:20Speaker 1: high schools in America called the Matha in Maryland. Man,
- 2:25Speaker 1: let me just run off when I say legendary high school,
- 2:28Speaker 1: the Matha Catholic of high school. Let me pay some
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the famous people from there. Markale, folks, if you
- 2:33Speaker 1: don't know him, he's the first pick in the NFL
- 2:35Speaker 1: in the NBA draft last year, Victor Oladipot, he was
- 2:39Speaker 1: a number two pick in the NBA draft. Legendary Agel,
- 2:43Speaker 1: big booty, that Ley boy, he backed down. Boy, you
- 2:47Speaker 1: couldn't get around him. James Brown, that's my boy. Hosted
- 2:51Speaker 1: the NFL today, Cameron Wake He dominated the CFL. Now
- 2:56Speaker 1: he dominated down in Miami. Dolphin David Aldrich. If you
- 2:59Speaker 1: don't know Daves, you don't follow NBA. My man, I
- 3:02Speaker 1: had to grab this personal Clifton Pile actor friend, that's
- 3:06Speaker 1: my boy, Danny Ferry and the drum roll. Rodney McCleod. Man, brother,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you're on the wall down there and the math Ye, Rodney,
- 3:18Speaker 1: they got you on their wall. Man. Man, you know
- 3:20Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Right now, they got my picture up,
- 3:23Speaker 1: you know, up in the weight room. But you know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I think they're gonna give me a little in dusty. Um.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That's what I'm hoping soon, you know, especially now that
- 3:31Speaker 1: I got that Super Bowl champ tack to me. But
- 3:35Speaker 1: it's really an odd man to you know, uh be represented, um,
- 3:41Speaker 1: you know, represent the MATHA. And you just listed off
- 3:44Speaker 1: you know a lot of amazing guys, um and they're
- 3:47Speaker 1: all especially in some way that have come through the MATHA.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So it's just an honored man to to hopefully, you
- 3:52Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, uh, be up on the wall
- 3:55Speaker 1: beside those guys. That's just a few. That's just a few.
- 3:59Speaker 1: If any about to google with the MATHA Catholic High
- 4:02Speaker 1: School is in Maryland and you will see I I
- 4:05Speaker 1: just you know this interview about Rodney. I ain't got
- 4:07Speaker 1: time to be listening to all the stars indicate from
- 4:09Speaker 1: this high school, and right I want to talk about
- 4:11Speaker 1: your story man. First of all, I went out reading
- 4:13Speaker 1: your bio. My minor is sociology. My degrees in mathematic
- 4:18Speaker 1: but my mind and sociology. Your degree in sociology. So
- 4:21Speaker 1: immediately you were my man, Oh yeah, yes, sir, yes, sir.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Degree in sociology. Why degree in sociology at the University
- 4:30Speaker 1: of Virginia. Uh man, I mean, honestly, being an athlete
- 4:35Speaker 1: of Virginia, it's hard to be able to balance, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: the school aspect um, going to class every day. Um,
- 4:43Speaker 1: the workload, um, you know, tied in with uh you
- 4:46Speaker 1: know what my job is, what is going out, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: practicing and and Lincolshaw. I'm preparing on Saturday. So um,
- 4:53Speaker 1: you know, I've kind of had three options. I was
- 4:55Speaker 1: kind of leaning towards sociology, psychology, anthropology. So um, I
- 5:00Speaker 1: end up going with sociologists because I was just a
- 5:03Speaker 1: lot more there's a lot interested uh more interested in
- 5:07Speaker 1: that field and the classes. It is an amazing degree.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It's an amazing degree. Man. Uh you know, my my
- 5:14Speaker 1: degree is a mathematic, but if I had to do
- 5:16Speaker 1: it all again, it would be a sociology because it
- 5:18Speaker 1: just taught me so much about people and how people
- 5:21Speaker 1: interactive and also I learned so much about what I
- 5:23Speaker 1: didn't learn in high school, how much they did not
- 5:26Speaker 1: you information. It was almost it was a ground baking,
- 5:29Speaker 1: uh decision for me to do and go into those classes,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and I just soaked them up. Man. So when I
- 5:34Speaker 1: saw that you, I knew that right right along. You
- 5:37Speaker 1: have a degree in sociology. You have a strong awareness
- 5:39Speaker 1: about this country about social issues and uh, and things
- 5:43Speaker 1: that concerned everyday people that a lot of people just
- 5:45Speaker 1: kind of disregard. That's what sociology brings to the table exactly.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Now let's talk about you. You're you're a football player, okay,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and you went to the University of Virginia and you're
- 5:57Speaker 1: playing safety and cornerback in college. Correct, correct? Okay, So
- 6:01Speaker 1: draft is coming up, Draft is coming up. Did you
- 6:05Speaker 1: expect to get drafted because you went into the NFL
- 6:07Speaker 1: as a free agent undrafted free agent? Yeah, so, um
- 6:13Speaker 1: there was a lot of speculation on whether or not,
- 6:16Speaker 1: um I would be drafted or not. They're projecting me
- 6:19Speaker 1: um or you know, late to uh possibly priority free agents.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Um So going through the whole process, man, it was fun.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I I enjoyed it. Uh, you know, I think my
- 6:31Speaker 1: goal you know as a child, UH was always to
- 6:34Speaker 1: hear my name, you know, get called. You know, I'm
- 6:37Speaker 1: saying to day that draft and you know it didn't happen,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and so um, you know it was God's plan. But
- 6:45Speaker 1: I had a lot of cars going on that day. UM,
- 6:48Speaker 1: teams calling me. UM, let me know they were interested.
- 6:51Speaker 1: They wanted to try and get me at this or
- 6:54Speaker 1: that pig. So you know, a day of the draft, Hello,
- 7:01Speaker 1: did I lose you? That matters? So UM A lot
- 7:07Speaker 1: of it. Um. You know I went through that process. Um.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I was fortunate enough and blessing enough to go with St.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Louis Rams. Um. They gave me the opportunity and kind
- 7:17Speaker 1: of exceled from day one. Man, it took a lot
- 7:20Speaker 1: of hard work. You know, we know it. You signed
- 7:26Speaker 1: five year contract for thirty seven million dollars with the Philadelphi,
- 7:30Speaker 1: so we know it worked out. You know you I
- 7:34Speaker 1: read now, you know I reading and doing my research,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so you know it kind of worked out. I feel blessed.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It took. Yeah, I mean it takes a lot um
- 7:43Speaker 1: to be undrafted man, to come in UM not know
- 7:47Speaker 1: what your future holds, um, and and like everything that
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, you do is is heightened versus you know,
- 7:54Speaker 1: a guy that does get drafted. So I had to
- 7:58Speaker 1: work actually hard, man. I had the um, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: countless hours outside of the time that um they gave
- 8:05Speaker 1: to me, um to make sure that every day. UM,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you know, I was fully prepared and I treated every
- 8:11Speaker 1: day like the interview. And UM I was just determining. Um,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I didn't want to go back home. UM. You know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: God game the opportunity to get my foot in the door.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And h that's what it's about, getting that foot in
- 8:24Speaker 1: the door. That's what this show was about. Telling people
- 8:27Speaker 1: if you get a shot, don't don't don't don't sleep
- 8:31Speaker 1: on it. And you didn't sleep with your opportunity. Nothing
- 8:33Speaker 1: for advantage. Yeah, you take nothing for uh. Um you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: nothing for granted. Man. And I think me being undrafted
- 8:41Speaker 1: and my story UM just kind of you know, propelled
- 8:44Speaker 1: me and propelled my career. UM for me, um not
- 8:48Speaker 1: to take any play or any moment for granted, and
- 8:52Speaker 1: and appreciating the game and different aspects I think coming
- 8:56Speaker 1: in in a way that I did. Uh you know
- 8:59Speaker 1: it us, Uh, it is a perfect story from that
- 9:02Speaker 1: perfect It's an amazing story. Right, They don't sleep on
- 9:05Speaker 1: this story, man, because of the fact that you know
- 9:07Speaker 1: you you came from amazing high school, you went to
- 9:10Speaker 1: the an incredible academic institution, and at the University of Virginia.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You graduated with a sociology degree. Like I said, that's
- 9:17Speaker 1: my minor. I know what you graduated it. That's not
- 9:19Speaker 1: an easy degree. That's a degree that that makes well
- 9:22Speaker 1: rounded individuals. People hired you get that degree. They hire
- 9:26Speaker 1: at IBM. Those are people that are hiring nowadays at
- 9:28Speaker 1: these technical companies because they have a balanced vision. So
- 9:32Speaker 1: and I understand who you are from that perspective, and
- 9:35Speaker 1: you and you were determined to win. You were undrafted,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you know, and that's a certain degree of embarrassment because
- 9:40Speaker 1: everybody want to you want to get drafted. But that
- 9:42Speaker 1: didn't that then dut you you went there, made that St.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Louis Rams and you side of the contract. We don'ta
- 9:47Speaker 1: talk about more about with the Roddy McCloud Super Bowl
- 9:50Speaker 1: champions starting safely for the Philadelphi Eagles. When we come
- 9:53Speaker 1: back about the charities and his business money making conversation, Man,
- 9:57Speaker 1: this guy just signed the contract in twenty six for
- 9:59Speaker 1: five min your five years thirty seven million dollars. That's
- 10:02Speaker 1: a money made conversation. This is ras Sean McDonald. You're
- 10:06Speaker 1: listening to money making conversation on the phone. I have
- 10:08Speaker 1: the starting safety of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles,
- 10:13Speaker 1: Rodney McLeod. Rodney, how are you doing? My friend? What's
- 10:16Speaker 1: going on? Good? I want to ask you, Rodney, when
- 10:18Speaker 1: you sign a contrary your story is amazing and I
- 10:21Speaker 1: want to keep repeating and I'm sure you repeated a
- 10:23Speaker 1: lot in motivational speaking opportunities that you get in front
- 10:26Speaker 1: of adults and also especially in front of a high
- 10:29Speaker 1: school and middle school students, because I know your your
- 10:32Speaker 1: range of who you talk to is why when you
- 10:34Speaker 1: become a sports or a sports or athlete of your
- 10:37Speaker 1: of your level, you you know you're coming to the
- 10:39Speaker 1: NFL as a free agent, and then you've signed this
- 10:42Speaker 1: five year, thirty seven million dollar contract. So that's that's
- 10:45Speaker 1: a different group of people around you. Now, what is
- 10:47Speaker 1: team Rodney mccleoud, right, that protects you to make sure
- 10:51Speaker 1: that you're making the right decisions? What is who is
- 10:54Speaker 1: or what is team Rodney mccleoud. Um, I mean the
- 10:58Speaker 1: team is really you know, starts with my family. Um,
- 11:02Speaker 1: you know that's where it all started. Um. Those are
- 11:04Speaker 1: the ones that paved the way for me to get
- 11:07Speaker 1: to where I am today. And UM, I owe a
- 11:10Speaker 1: lot of my success, um, you know to them, UM
- 11:13Speaker 1: for the sacrifices they made UM for me growing up,
- 11:17Speaker 1: getting me um involved in sports in the first place,
- 11:21Speaker 1: particularly football, but UM, you know I was well around
- 11:23Speaker 1: it did a lot. UM. But then you know the
- 11:26Speaker 1: other side of things, My mom always you know, priesting me,
- 11:31Speaker 1: did my parson general education was always important and you
- 11:34Speaker 1: know I am athletic, I am challenged, but UM, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: don't forget what's important. And UM at the end of
- 11:43Speaker 1: the day. Uh you know, knowledge is power man and
- 11:47Speaker 1: and and the mind is a powerful uh source. And
- 11:51Speaker 1: so it was always priesting me regardless of um what
- 11:55Speaker 1: I'm doing on that field. It's the grades aren't in
- 11:57Speaker 1: line then, oh you know more of that. So I think, UM,
- 12:04Speaker 1: just the way I was raised, man, UM, it kind
- 12:08Speaker 1: of prepared me just for life and everything that you
- 12:11Speaker 1: know that I've gone through. Uh my parents that that
- 12:16Speaker 1: that worked. UM, Like I said, very hard. So I
- 12:20Speaker 1: know what hard work looks like. UM. I know you
- 12:22Speaker 1: have to work, um to get UM to see those
- 12:26Speaker 1: results that you want. And so that's where it starts. Man,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I got a fiancee. She's a part of the team.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And then, um, you know, I surround myself with what
- 12:35Speaker 1: the health that I need, my agent Tony Page, my
- 12:38Speaker 1: PR guy Anton Barnes, and financial advisor a man tax personal. Um.
- 12:50Speaker 1: There there's a lot of people, man, that that I
- 12:52Speaker 1: can label as team Ronnie that that helped um, um
- 12:57Speaker 1: me get to our I m and keep me grounded. Okay,
- 12:59Speaker 1: now let's go into fashion. Okay, now how I fashion
- 13:02Speaker 1: retail store? Now rutting? Who told you? Now? Run? See
- 13:06Speaker 1: I think I can dress now running? Who told you?
- 13:09Speaker 1: You know? Fashion style? Man? Honestly, you know I started
- 13:16Speaker 1: in high school. You know, I kind of just always
- 13:20Speaker 1: turned me a little bit. But it wasn't until you know,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I started, um getting around guys around the league, and
- 13:27Speaker 1: you know, as you as you go out, No, I
- 13:29Speaker 1: don't know, en you tell me, tell me Mr Fast
- 13:34Speaker 1: whether my friends are going to advance and people just
- 13:37Speaker 1: complimenting your style and your look. And then you know
- 13:40Speaker 1: I started to be like, hey, man, like like fashion,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I like dressing up, you know, confidence, I have a
- 13:47Speaker 1: lot of fun and I was I was always a
- 13:50Speaker 1: guy that likes to present myself well and so um
- 13:54Speaker 1: it just became my niche and um, you know, I
- 13:57Speaker 1: just wanted to take it to a whole another level
- 14:00Speaker 1: and put my put my all into it. And now
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm an owner of backup house right there and right one.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm from, um it's actually right outside one. I'm from
- 14:10Speaker 1: d C area, Arleston, Virginia and Pentagon City Mall. And
- 14:14Speaker 1: we've been open since late November and we've just been
- 14:18Speaker 1: growing every since. Oh come on, now, I saw some pictures.
- 14:22Speaker 1: That's a pretty big store. I mean square feeds. The
- 14:27Speaker 1: square feeds that store. I don't exactually know the exact
- 14:30Speaker 1: square footage, but it's really not as big as you think. Okay, okay,
- 14:34Speaker 1: the pictures fool of me. The pictures a fool of me. Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 1: But we I mean we make it, we make it.
- 14:40Speaker 1: We make it work. Man. The store is are always
- 14:43Speaker 1: full of nice middle of the high end brands. Daniel
- 14:47Speaker 1: Patrick off White represent other UK um so we have
- 14:52Speaker 1: something from UK, Los Angeles area, Canada, um Man, some
- 14:59Speaker 1: local brands. So we just wanted to bring something splash
- 15:03Speaker 1: with the d C. Man d C like we're known
- 15:05Speaker 1: for fashion but you know we we we were kind
- 15:09Speaker 1: of a little bit behind, you know when it comes
- 15:11Speaker 1: to the New York's and the Los Angeles. But we're
- 15:14Speaker 1: trying to just be that store man that that puts um,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you know, DC back on the map. Like, how do
- 15:20Speaker 1: you promote it? How did how do you promote the
- 15:21Speaker 1: hip hop? My listeners? You your store owner, I know
- 15:24Speaker 1: your super Bowl champ you know, but you you opened
- 15:27Speaker 1: it before you became the Super Bowl champ. Okay, so
- 15:29Speaker 1: you had a vision. Just man, I'm just gonna take
- 15:32Speaker 1: advantage of my Look, this is my love, this is
- 15:35Speaker 1: my passion, and I'm gonna do it. So what were
- 15:37Speaker 1: the steps? Man? Um? I mean it really started with
- 15:42Speaker 1: uh first, my mentor. Um that's where it all started.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Kevin James, who is now my business partner. Um, he
- 15:49Speaker 1: was mentoring me the entire time prior to us opening up.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And UM, you know we sat down one day man
- 15:56Speaker 1: and we had a vision that we had a conversation,
- 15:58Speaker 1: um over dinner and uh you know that day forward. UM,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you know we understand what we wanted to accomplish. And UM,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this uh store right here is just to start there.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You know what what the end? Goo? Um? Is gonna be.
- 16:14Speaker 1: You know, we were planning to have a few locally,
- 16:17Speaker 1: but then also make this thing be global man um.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But it starts with being able to trust in someone
- 16:23Speaker 1: like that guy in my position who's not there on
- 16:26Speaker 1: the daily basis. You need someone that understands the industry
- 16:30Speaker 1: um and the hands and out that can manage the
- 16:32Speaker 1: story day and the day out. And I'm lucky enough
- 16:35Speaker 1: to have a guy like that who has a lot
- 16:37Speaker 1: of experience and that I trust. Umst of A. First
- 16:41Speaker 1: of all, you didn't open the nightclub, so you know,
- 16:44Speaker 1: so you know some you know that happens all the
- 16:46Speaker 1: time opening the nightclub. Dude, they can party. I like
- 16:49Speaker 1: the party. People show up for my parties. I'm open
- 16:52Speaker 1: a nightclub that you know that that was I was
- 16:56Speaker 1: so happy when I read that on your bio. But
- 16:58Speaker 1: let's switch gears. When you just just find your talking.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It's called back up House. It's a high end fashion
- 17:03Speaker 1: retail store. Uh go to www. Dot b O h
- 17:08Speaker 1: U s A as backup House b O b O
- 17:10Speaker 1: h USA dot com. That's www dot b O h
- 17:15Speaker 1: U s A dot com. Millennials come to force now.
- 17:18Speaker 1: HBU s is a bunch of h b U C
- 17:20Speaker 1: h b c U campuses Rodney area up in Arlington.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Go up there, Howard, how would come on? Now, come on,
- 17:29Speaker 1: throw some love to my Mayor Roding McCloud a backup house.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Let's talk about your your charity, man, because you're out there, man,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you're happing out the community. Uh. You know, spokesperson for
- 17:38Speaker 1: the American Association for Cancel Research tell us about that, yeah, man,
- 17:43Speaker 1: um So, I'm just uh I recently partnered with them
- 17:46Speaker 1: once I came to Philadelphia. Um so it was a
- 17:49Speaker 1: big year for me. Um I came over here, you know,
- 17:51Speaker 1: from long but then also um, Matt, you know, with
- 17:54Speaker 1: this tremendous organization, American Association for Cancer Research, that does
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know, phenomenal job up man and trying to uh
- 18:02Speaker 1: find a cure um for for cancer and not just one. Um.
