- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now when you're ready, let's dive into God's word together.
- 0:44Listen to the exchange between Jesus and several of those that
- 0:46desired to follow him. At the end of Luke Chapter 9, as
- 0:49they were going along the road, someone said to him, I will
- 0:52follow you wherever you go. And Jesus said to him, the foxes
- 0:55have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of
- 0:58Man has nowhere to lay his head. And he said to another, Follow
- 1:02me. But he said, Lord, permit me
- 1:04first to go and bury my father. But he said to him, allow the
- 1:07dead to bury their own dead. But As for you, go and proclaim
- 1:10everywhere the Kingdom of God. Another also said, I will follow
- 1:14you, Lord, but first permit me to say goodbye to those at home.
- 1:18And Jesus said to him, no one, after putting his hand to the
- 1:20plough and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.
- 1:24In this short passage, we read the word follow three different
- 1:27times, once in each conversation.
- 1:30What Jesus is laying out here for these would be disciples and
- 1:34for us is I think 2 key truths, 1 implicit and one explicit.
- 1:39First, the implied the Christian life is one of following Jesus.
- 1:43This is the fundamental state of being a Christian.
- 1:47His fundamental mission, goal and purpose is to follow Jesus.
- 1:51That's active, that's responsive, that involves real
- 1:54movement, real change, real intention.
- 1:58As Christians we follow a real living person, God himself.
- 2:03Second, the explicit truth. Here in Luke 957 through 62, the
- 2:08Christian life, the life of following Jesus, is costly.
- 2:13In this text we see three of those who desired or intended to
- 2:16follow Jesus, but each of them is met with a hang up to the
- 2:20first. Jesus tells him that the foxes
- 2:22have holes and the birds have nest, but the Son of Man has
- 2:25nowhere to lay his head. The life of following Jesus will
- 2:28often not be comfortable. So if you have come to Christ
- 2:32for comfort in this life, prepare to be disappointed.
- 2:35When the second individual is instructed to follow Jesus, he
- 2:38hesitates. He wants to 1st go bury his
- 2:40Father. Jesus responds, Allow the dead
- 2:43to bury their own dead for. But As for you, go and proclaim
- 2:47everywhere the Kingdom of God. If we would follow Jesus, there
- 2:51can be no hesitation. He is our Master.
- 2:55His commands to us can be met with no response other than
- 2:58immediate obedience. This is fundamental to being a
- 3:02follower. The last man in this account
- 3:04tells Jesus that he will follow him, but first he wants to go
- 3:07back and say goodbye to those at home.
- 3:10Jesus responds. No one, after putting his hand
- 3:13to the plough and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.
- 3:16Following Jesus requires selling out fully to him.
- 3:20There can be no looking back to the past, no looking back to
- 3:23life before we began the journey with Jesus.
- 3:26There is only, as Hebrews 12/2 puts it, fixing our eyes on
- 3:30Jesus, the author and perfector of faith.
- 3:34So are you following Jesus today?
- 3:37What is holding you back? Is it comfort, tradition,
- 3:41expectation, fear? There is only one way to follow
- 3:45Jesus and that is all the way. Heed His command today and
- 3:50follow Him.
