1:34
Speaker 1: back April tenth and April seventeen, Envy A Seven Deadly
1:37
Speaker 1: Sin Story. And we'll also be discussing a little bit
1:40
Speaker 1: hosting Dudes of n any Day for Yance franchise. Tell
1:43
Speaker 1: All in her Foundation, which I always have to talk about,
1:47
Speaker 1: a Sean Foundation for Girls with Nurtures and supports underserved
1:50
Speaker 1: and underrepresented girls and young women in the areas of
1:53
Speaker 1: stem health, odtunity, neighborhoods. Please welcome back to my show.
1:57
Speaker 1: Been a long time. Ms. Sean rob Hello, my friend,
2:02
Speaker 1: how are you. It's so great to be back here.
2:05
Speaker 1: Let me put the word executive producer, Sean Robinson, because
2:09
Speaker 1: you know it's Sean. We've known each other a long
2:11
Speaker 1: time originally of course, you know we use hosting the
2:13
Speaker 1: entertainment magazine show that journey to this journey. We don't
2:17
Speaker 1: see it, but it's happening now. And you and you're
2:20
Speaker 1: so popular on your LinkedIn. You know, people really resonate
2:24
Speaker 1: with your motivational quotes and your your lifestyle. You really
2:28
Speaker 1: are starting to find your voice, and maybe you've always
2:31
Speaker 1: had your voice, but you're using the platform to telling that.
2:33
Speaker 1: Tell us about that. Well, thank you so much for Joan.
2:36
Speaker 1: I really appreciated and uh, you know, just being here
2:40
Speaker 1: with you is a real blessing to be able to
2:43
Speaker 1: you know, share my message and uh you know, share
2:46
Speaker 1: these you know, these new chapters in my life because
2:48
Speaker 1: I'm all about, uh, you know, helping to motivate people
2:52
Speaker 1: and telling them that you know, you can do many
2:55
Speaker 1: things by by share, perseverance, faith and hard work. Uh
3:02
Speaker 1: that's you know, that's what I'm about so you know, um,
3:05
Speaker 1: you know it spent uh my entire career in front
3:10
Speaker 1: of the camera, uh doing first started in local news
3:14
Speaker 1: and my hometown of Detroit, and then work my way
3:18
Speaker 1: up through so many different news markets, and then came
3:22
Speaker 1: to a national show and national back then met national
3:27
Speaker 1: because there was no Facebook, Twitter, no social media anything
3:32
Speaker 1: like that back in n I can't believe it was
3:36
Speaker 1: so so long ago. And then after spending you know,
3:40
Speaker 1: sixteen years on Access Hollywood, UM started thinking, you know,
3:45
Speaker 1: what is next? What's next for me? How do I
3:47
Speaker 1: how do I you know, use my talents, put what
3:50
Speaker 1: I've learned to good use, and just started kind of
3:53
Speaker 1: acquiring different properties, thinking about different projects that I wanted
3:58
Speaker 1: to do, and really trying to you know, pursue those
4:02
Speaker 1: goals and and and figure out like what exactly do
4:06
Speaker 1: I want my my next chapter to look like? And
4:09
Speaker 1: what do I want my legacy also to be? And so, um,
4:14
Speaker 1: so here we are today. It's um, you know, in
4:17
Speaker 1: addition to being an Emmy Award winning journalists, I now
4:20
Speaker 1: get to add executive producer, as you said, to my name,
4:23
Speaker 1: which I'm so excited about these new movies on Lifetime
4:28
Speaker 1: not one, but two movies on Lifetime. So I'm I'm
4:31
Speaker 1: just really very very blessed. So yeah, it's been a
4:35
Speaker 1: long journey, but it's been one with peaks and valleys
4:38
Speaker 1: and so um, you know it's led me to you today. Well,
4:43
Speaker 1: you know the beauty of the valleys are there are
4:46
Speaker 1: major peaks that really doesn't the valley. Isn't that so
4:49
Speaker 1: much a valley. It's just a place to arrest so
4:52
Speaker 1: you can clam another peak. And that's what you're doing
4:54
Speaker 1: every time I've seen you, you know, whether it's community
4:57
Speaker 1: and but it all started your in Atlanta. Spellman and
5:01
Speaker 1: ABC use came to the forefront of America during the
5:03
Speaker 1: pandemic era when especially post George Flores Corporation started making
5:08
Speaker 1: a lot of donations towards HBCUs. And we've always talked
5:12
Speaker 1: about HBCUs every time I've interviewed your own money making conversation.
5:15
Speaker 1: Talk about the foundation of that in Hollywood is dominated
5:19
Speaker 1: by HBCU graduates in the entertainment industry and you're just
5:23
Speaker 1: one of the leaders in that. Now behind the camera,
5:25
Speaker 1: talk about the success that you've got from the educational
5:28
Speaker 1: and the lifestyle that was presented to you at Spellman. Yeah,
5:31
Speaker 1: you know, Spellman gave me um an appreciation, a real
5:37
Speaker 1: appreciation for sisterhood. And also when you empower a girl,
5:44
Speaker 1: she can change the world. And that was one of
5:47
Speaker 1: the reasons that I started my foundation. But even before that,
5:52
Speaker 1: you know, I came from parents who always taught me,
5:54
Speaker 1: if God gives you a platform, use it to give back.
5:57
Speaker 1: I could cover a gazillion red car our bits, I
6:00
Speaker 1: could make, you know, so much money in the world.
6:04
Speaker 1: But what I was doing for other people is what
6:07
Speaker 1: was important to my parents and to my grandparents. So
6:11
Speaker 1: I always you know, my journey through life has been
6:16
Speaker 1: led by philanthropy and giving back. So at Spellman it
6:21
Speaker 1: was you know, I remember Sean just saying, I mean
6:24
Speaker 1: thinking about the women that I saw right before me
6:27
Speaker 1: as this girl, this teenage girl, and then a girl
6:30
Speaker 1: that you know, you know, in my early twenties, sitting
6:34
Speaker 1: there seeing like poets Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, um Coretta
6:40
Speaker 1: Scott King, civil rights leaders coming through the gates of
6:45
Speaker 1: Spellman and speaking to us about our dreams, our goals,
6:49
Speaker 1: and um the fact that we can accomplish anything that
6:53
Speaker 1: we put our minds to. I would not trade my
6:56
Speaker 1: education at Spellman for anything in the world. It just
7:01
Speaker 1: taught us that, you know, first of all, taught us
7:04
Speaker 1: the value of education and a real gave us a
7:07
Speaker 1: real connection about our our ancestry and where we came from,
7:12
Speaker 1: and the fact that it was up to us to
7:14
Speaker 1: help change the world for the better for all these
7:17
Speaker 1: little black girls coming after us. So um that, like
7:21
Speaker 1: I said, that was one of the reasons that I
7:23
Speaker 1: started my foundation, because it's important to give back and
7:27
Speaker 1: it's important to give a voice to those that don't
7:30
Speaker 1: have one. Amazing Lifetime and Bishop T. D. Jake's um
7:36
Speaker 1: the idea, the concept. Now, how did you gain control
7:40
Speaker 1: of the franchise that you have did? They're One is
7:43
Speaker 1: premiering on Lifetime this Saturday and the following Saturday, the
7:47
Speaker 1: Seconds premiering back to back weekends with your name on it.
7:51
Speaker 1: Talk about pulling it all together and then we're going
7:52
Speaker 1: to talk about each episode and not giving way too
7:55
Speaker 1: much of the plot. Yes, yes, and so richean, Yeah,
7:58
Speaker 1: I'm sure. Being you know, an executive producer, you know yourself,
8:03
Speaker 1: you can identify with a lot of this story. But
8:06
Speaker 1: when I actually when I'm still at Access Hollywood, I
8:09
Speaker 1: started thinking about like, okay, what what what you know?
8:13
Speaker 1: Do I want to have control over I I want
8:17
Speaker 1: to have control over different projects. I want to start
8:19
Speaker 1: acquiring projects that I'm really really interested in. Um. And
8:24
Speaker 1: so a friend of mine uh named Patrick Henry Bass.
8:28
Speaker 1: He was at Essence magazine at the time, who's a
8:31
Speaker 1: books editor, and he called me, you remember Patrick? I
8:35
Speaker 1: think you do know Patrick? He um. He called me
8:38
Speaker 1: up and he said, Sean, He said, I just got
8:41
Speaker 1: the galley for a new book, an upcoming book by
8:44
Speaker 1: author Victoria Christopher Murray, who was a very prominent author
8:47
Speaker 1: in the African American community. And she's written, like I
8:50
Speaker 1: don't know, thirty books or so. And he said, the
8:53
Speaker 1: book is called Lust. She's writing the entire seven Deadly Sins.
8:57
Speaker 1: Each book is a different death sin. He said, you
9:01
Speaker 1: need to call Victoria up tell her that you want
9:03
Speaker 1: to option this book and the entire series. And so
9:06
Speaker 1: I called Victoria because I knew her, and I said, hey, Victoria,
9:10
Speaker 1: you know I'm producing now and I would really love
9:12
Speaker 1: to try to turn these books into movies. So she
9:16
Speaker 1: was like, okay, let's do it. And so when I
9:19
Speaker 1: first so we did the deal. And when I first
9:22
Speaker 1: started pitching it around town for Shawn. Uh you know,
9:25
Speaker 1: I pitched it back then to Lifetime, I pitched into
9:29
Speaker 1: some other networks. I pitched it to individual producers and
9:33
Speaker 1: everyone loved it. But the timing wasn't right. This is
9:36
Speaker 1: the thing about timing, Okay, just because there just because
9:42
Speaker 1: the answer is sometimes we think the answer is no,
9:45
Speaker 1: but the answer is really not yet okay, So that's
9:50
Speaker 1: really important. So I was pitching and pitching around town
9:54
Speaker 1: and then uh, you know, several months I think, gosh,
9:58
Speaker 1: almost a year probably went by, and I picture to
10:01
Speaker 1: do T. D. Jake's also, and then Bishop Jakes did
10:06
Speaker 1: a project at Lifetime that was very very well received,
10:10
Speaker 1: as all of his projects are. But um, so he
10:14
Speaker 1: wanted he was acquiring more property he wanted to do,
10:17
Speaker 1: you know, he was looking for more projects to do.
10:20
Speaker 1: And so his producing partner, Derrick Williams called me up
10:24
Speaker 1: and he said, um he said, hey, Sean, do you
10:28
Speaker 1: still have you remember that project we talked about many
10:30
Speaker 1: many moons ago. Do you still have the project the
10:34
Speaker 1: Seven Deadly Sins? And I said, yes, I do still
10:36
Speaker 1: have it. And he said, well, Bishop Jakes would like
10:40
Speaker 1: to partner with you and do it on Lifetime and
10:43
Speaker 1: I'm like, uh, yeah, okay, we did reformed this partnership,
10:50
Speaker 1: and there it was. We had because of this, you know,
10:53
Speaker 1: because of this partnership. Now we have you know, these
10:56
Speaker 1: two movies, possibly seven movies. We we hope, um uh
11:00
Speaker 1: we're we're we're calling it. And that's how that's how
11:05
Speaker 1: it all happened. And so we started working on and
11:07
Speaker 1: started working on the scripts. Uh, you know, found writers
11:10
Speaker 1: for the you know, for the scripts, and then uh,
11:13
Speaker 1: COVID happened. Everything came to a standstill. I'm like, oh no,
11:18
Speaker 1: not again, not again, and so um and so then
11:24
Speaker 1: everything slowed down. But then Lifetime came to us and said, okay,
11:28
Speaker 1: let's let's get in gear, let's do it, and we
11:31
Speaker 1: ramped up really really fast, and we shot through COVID
11:35
Speaker 1: and now here it is like and I think I
11:39
Speaker 1: optioned the books for Sean in twenty eighteen, I think,
11:46
Speaker 1: um or twenty seven, No, actually in seventeen. That's when
11:50
Speaker 1: I talked to Victoria about the books. Sen here we
11:53
Speaker 1: are in uh, now the movies are happening, and so
11:57
Speaker 1: you know, sometimes it happens fast, sometimes times it doesn't.
12:01
Speaker 1: But you just have to keep adding, you keep you
12:04
Speaker 1: have to keep on persevering until you reach that. Well.
12:07
Speaker 1: You know, the thing about it is that, first of all,
12:09
Speaker 1: that's with COVID interesting the laying everything. That's still pretty
12:12
Speaker 1: fast from the idea of talking to somebody, then pitching it,
12:16
Speaker 1: and then your back to back movies on back to
12:18
Speaker 1: back weekends carrying. It's pretty fast. It's pretty fast for
12:23
Speaker 1: the second. First of all, not only pretty fast, but
12:25
Speaker 1: also well produced. Where I saw both movies and off air,
12:29
Speaker 1: and I got to tell tell everybody on the air.
12:31
Speaker 1: I am a guy. I get a lot of books.
12:32
Speaker 1: I get a lot of movies to watch. Sometimes I
12:35
Speaker 1: watched three or four movies a weekend. I've gotten really
12:37
Speaker 1: good at reading books really fast, and reading and scanning
12:41
Speaker 1: through movies really bad. Because I see the beginning to apply.
12:44
Speaker 1: I pretty much know how the middle is gonna feel
12:45
Speaker 1: like in the end. I could not do that with
12:49
Speaker 1: your movies. Your movies was so well written, the characters
12:54
Speaker 1: were so well developed. If you did not, if you
12:57
Speaker 1: missed any nuance of the character's reason, the rationale for
13:00
Speaker 1: why they're doing something in the movie, then you missed
13:03
Speaker 1: the movie. It forced me to watch every minute of
13:06
Speaker 1: those movies and that, my friend, is in the incredible
13:10
Speaker 1: testament to being a great writers, great directors, but also
13:13
Speaker 1: great leadership as an executive producer. Tell us about these movies. Well, okay,
13:18
Speaker 1: So lust is that insatiable desire to have something that
13:27
Speaker 1: you know you should not have. Okay, who hasn't felt
13:32
Speaker 1: that at some time in their life? Everybody can deal
13:37
Speaker 1: everybody can can identify with lusting after something or someone
13:43
Speaker 1: at some point in their life. So our our main character,
13:48
Speaker 1: Tiffany is um, you know, she's in a relationship, about
13:53
Speaker 1: to get married with the man of her dreams, and
13:56
Speaker 1: then she is confronted with one of the deadly sins,
14:02
Speaker 1: which is lust, and how that takes her down a
14:07
Speaker 1: path that she is going to have to deal with
14:15
Speaker 1: the consequences of lust and how do you deal with it?
14:19
Speaker 1: And here here's the thing, Rashan, I grew up in
14:22
Speaker 1: the church. Okay, Um, I have a you know, my
14:25
Speaker 1: background is in the church. You know, I was baptized
14:28
Speaker 1: when I was I don't know, I think sick or
14:32
Speaker 1: took my first communion at six. Raised Catholic. But anyway,
14:35
Speaker 1: so you know, they teach us about the consequences of sin,
14:39
Speaker 1: the Wages of Sin, you know, so you know, I
14:45
Speaker 1: love these stories because it does have that element of faith,
14:52
Speaker 1: but it's not beating you over the head with you know,
14:56
Speaker 1: you should do this or you should do that. So
14:58
Speaker 1: the jury, not the audio ends, goes on this journey
15:01
Speaker 1: with Tiffany. At times they're probably like, no, don't do that,
15:07
Speaker 1: but you know they want her, they want her to
15:10
Speaker 1: win in the end. Well, it's first of all, great acting,
15:14
Speaker 1: great casting. You know. Let me just drop a little.
15:17
Speaker 1: In the Lost my man off sexy guys in this
15:21
Speaker 1: movie carries it takes the lead in this movie as
15:24
Speaker 1: Tiffany's character. We got tank. I didn't want to say
15:29
Speaker 1: tax I was trying to say it takes that because
15:31
Speaker 1: he looks great, his body looks he's shape. He takes
15:33
Speaker 1: his shirt off fifteen thousand times, ladies, you know, fifteen
15:38
Speaker 1: thousand at one time he takes his shirt off and going,
15:40
Speaker 1: I never looked like that. Take. I'm would tell you
15:43
Speaker 1: some take his acting in here. Take his acting. Take
15:47
Speaker 1: is good. Takes good and you know what, so funny.
15:50
Speaker 1: I was talking to take the other day. He hasn't
15:53
Speaker 1: he hasn't seen the movie. A lot of times. You know,
15:55
Speaker 1: we get to see the movie, but you know before
15:57
Speaker 1: obviously as a producer, I do, but hadn't seen the movie.
16:01
Speaker 1: I said, Tank, you're gonna hate you. You all hate
16:05
Speaker 1: you when you see you. I'm gonna tell you that shirt.
16:09
Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know, Sean because when take
16:11
Speaker 1: shows up and me's Tiffany for the first time and
16:15
Speaker 1: I went by, boy, that was a smooth moves. He
16:18
Speaker 1: laying on her right now, but it was it was
16:21
Speaker 1: I would be honest with you. We talked about lust
16:24
Speaker 1: from talking to Sean Robins, she's an executive to do
16:26
Speaker 1: so to do Lifetime series uh seven seven Deadly sins
16:30
Speaker 1: in the first episode that's gonna add in the movie.
16:33
Speaker 1: Series is called Lost Them Gonna Go and talking envy
16:35
Speaker 1: in a minute. But I just Cury did an amazing job.
16:40
Speaker 1: I mean the subtleties. You know, you know, I've been
16:42
Speaker 1: this industry a long time, so I get to see subtleties.
16:44
Speaker 1: I could say, who can act, who can't act? I've
16:46
Speaker 1: been blessed to work with Oscar Winners and Jamie Fox
16:50
Speaker 1: and uh Monique as Oscar Winners. So I've been around
16:53
Speaker 1: hope with Steve Harvey, a lot of town. You know
16:54
Speaker 1: my background. I loved her subtleties. I love her bills.
16:58
Speaker 1: He has a great career as an actress. We know
17:00
Speaker 1: what you can do as a single, great career. Tank.
17:02
Speaker 1: When he came in, asked the lust as lost. He
17:06
Speaker 1: was amazing, He was He was subtle, He was trouble.
17:10
Speaker 1: You knew he was trouble when he walked, when he
17:12
Speaker 1: opened the front door, when he opened the front door,
17:15
Speaker 1: you know he was trouble. You knew he was soon
17:17
Speaker 1: as he got landed first frame of the movie. You
17:22
Speaker 1: knew it. Like, Okay, dude, you're gonna bring this to
17:25
Speaker 1: your house. Yeah, remember he was talking about people talking
17:27
Speaker 1: to the screen. That was me gonna okay, dude, you're
17:30
Speaker 1: gonna bring this to your house. Really really not knowing
17:33
Speaker 1: that your your wife is uh in mental discussions about
17:37
Speaker 1: her life and she was the right man, and she's
17:39
Speaker 1: doing the right things in bed and try other things
17:42
Speaker 1: and all these things which gives lust avenues to make
17:47
Speaker 1: you do wrong because it can't. It can't penetrate or
17:50
Speaker 1: it can't it can't crumble stability, it can't crumble a positivity.
17:56
Speaker 1: And so that's why I love this. This whole concept
17:59
Speaker 1: and this whole idea of developing a movie that shows
18:02
Speaker 1: you relatable. And I'm talking about this might be an
18:04
Speaker 1: all black cast, but the but the but the projects
18:08
Speaker 1: too relatable to anybody. Yes, it's universal, you know, it's
18:13
Speaker 1: it's you know, the themes are universal, um, you know,
18:17
Speaker 1: and that's what we wanted to accomplish and that you know,
18:20
Speaker 1: and as we're having these conversations about diversity and inclusion
18:24
Speaker 1: in Hollywood today, you know, we you don't have to
18:29
Speaker 1: cast black folks just when it's a black move. Like
18:33
Speaker 1: our themes, we go through the same things the other
18:36
Speaker 1: people go through. And so that's that's what I love, um,
18:41
Speaker 1: is this these themes are definitely universal. Anybody can relate
18:47
Speaker 1: to what Tiffany is going. And that's what I really
18:50
Speaker 1: loved about it. And that's really what what's kind of
18:52
Speaker 1: knowing what what people in general have pigeonholed African American talent, producers, writers, directors,
18:57
Speaker 1: saying that only black people want to watch your project,
19:00
Speaker 1: you know, And we're seeing that on streaming platforms where
19:04
Speaker 1: popular projects are going number one and they're all black
19:07
Speaker 1: casts or the cast of predominant thing. And that's why
19:09
Speaker 1: I really loved about this particular series of movies that
19:11
Speaker 1: I saw back to back. Now let's go to Envy.
19:14
Speaker 1: Envy plays on because that's because the first one is
19:16
Speaker 1: more adult, which I thought was beautiful. Now you're taking
19:19
Speaker 1: on a young character lead and Envy and this is uh,
19:24
Speaker 1: actually I want to say the name, so ran correct,
19:26
Speaker 1: that's corect thank you. Yeah, she's she's fantastic. She is
19:33
Speaker 1: really great. And when I first saw her her real
19:37
Speaker 1: her audition real, UM, I was like, gosh, you know,
19:40
Speaker 1: she's really she really pops on screen. She's very fantastic.
19:44
Speaker 1: She was she was on just came off Power. UM
19:48
Speaker 1: and I were really lucky, uh, to to have found her.
19:54
Speaker 1: Um or we're looked really lucky that she was available
19:57
Speaker 1: for this project because she just really at home. UM.
20:01
Speaker 1: And it's uh, she she's she's really dynamic. Well, you
20:06
Speaker 1: know the thing and I got to could see a
20:08
Speaker 1: rough cutter that you know, you know, I got to
20:10
Speaker 1: see it, so I still but it was a beautiful
20:13
Speaker 1: presentation of what you guys are gonna put on the
20:15
Speaker 1: main scrip. Some critics were missing, that's all I'm saying.
20:18
Speaker 1: But everything that was in place, and the thing about
20:20
Speaker 1: it when I really got to see her act. You know,
20:23
Speaker 1: I saw On The Empire and all that stuff, so
20:25
Speaker 1: familiar with her singing and her acting talents. But this
20:28
Speaker 1: was a ranging project, you know. And then you brought
20:30
Speaker 1: in Candice was Candy Burrows, who I loved from Real Housewives,
20:34
Speaker 1: and then DC young Fly was also are playing a
20:37
Speaker 1: little Meani. He plays a little MENI y'all. He's not
20:39
Speaker 1: telling jokes in here, but he's a little Meani, little
20:42
Speaker 1: handy meeting. And then of course my boy, Clifton Pole,
20:45
Speaker 1: he's in both movies. He's a both boy. He can
20:48
Speaker 1: double checks. Young man, old man, old man. Do you
20:52
Speaker 1: remember when Clifton Powell was on Rock? Yes, yes, yes,
20:58
Speaker 1: Cliff Clifton. Our relationship goes all the way back to
21:01
Speaker 1: two thousands. So I met you in Clifton Problem at
21:04
Speaker 1: the same time, because that's when we did the Steve
21:06
Speaker 1: Hard Morning Show. That's when you're not really connecting in
21:08
Speaker 1: two thousands. So Clifton Pile I made him used to
21:11
Speaker 1: come into the Morning show. We used to meet and
21:12
Speaker 1: I was to always admire his professionalism has been doing
21:16
Speaker 1: always doing major roles and always becoming the star. We
21:20
Speaker 1: always felt he could be and it's just to see
21:22
Speaker 1: him and because he plays an older character and Lust
21:26
Speaker 1: and he plays a person more his age and Envy,
21:29
Speaker 1: and it's really an important role because that's the that's
21:32
Speaker 1: the minister side of the movie, that that here's always
21:36
Speaker 1: a moment in each movie that you're in the church
21:39
Speaker 1: and you get to hear a message, but it's not
21:41
Speaker 1: a message just beating you over the head. That's what
21:43
Speaker 1: I loved about this show. I know exactly what you're
21:45
Speaker 1: trying to do and you're accomplishing it, but you're not
21:48
Speaker 1: making me feel like I gotta go pick up the
21:50
Speaker 1: Bible to understand that this is a relatable night right.
21:54
Speaker 1: And I just love Clifton Pile so much. He brings
21:58
Speaker 1: a thousand percent it uh to work every single day
22:03
Speaker 1: and I'm so glad that he is a part of
22:05
Speaker 1: the project. You know, Candy Burris, who is she is
22:09
Speaker 1: like building her her acting resume, and you know roch
22:12
Speaker 1: On for me um I as we were looking over
22:16
Speaker 1: the different actors and actresses for Lust and Envy. You know,
22:20
Speaker 1: as an executive producer, it's so wonderful for me to
22:23
Speaker 1: be able to be part of the decision making process
22:26
Speaker 1: that can give uh these actors these opportunities, um, you know,
22:31
Speaker 1: and help them be even reach their next goal. So
22:35
Speaker 1: I that's what I That's one of the things I
22:37
Speaker 1: really enjoy about being a decision maker, being an executive
22:42
Speaker 1: producer because for me, it's about providing opportunities to people
22:48
Speaker 1: who uh you know who listen. Hollywood is still a
22:51
Speaker 1: very tough place, a very very tough place for you know,
22:55
Speaker 1: people of color, and to be able to help them
22:58
Speaker 1: along in their journey is satisfying from me. You know,
23:02
Speaker 1: I've been there. I've been on this side of the
23:03
Speaker 1: cast and people. When I look at my career, I
23:05
Speaker 1: look at the Gabriel you used, the Kim Witling's cannons.
23:09
Speaker 1: You know, so many actors I see they're acting the
23:12
Speaker 1: day when they were Cal Robinson. That's what you're talking about.
23:16
Speaker 1: You know, you're in the room and you are in
23:18
Speaker 1: a position to That's what I love. What Will Packrids doing.
23:21
Speaker 1: You know, he's a he's a game changer, and Sean
23:24
Speaker 1: you you're becoming a game changer, and you know the
23:27
Speaker 1: power really is behind that camera, you know, in the
23:29
Speaker 1: writer's room and then the directors, you know, talking to
23:32
Speaker 1: the executives who come down and really only speak to you,
23:34
Speaker 1: unless the actor or actress is powerful they want to
23:37
Speaker 1: speak to them. They only speak to the executive producers,
23:39
Speaker 1: the showrunners. They may talk to the writers if it's
23:42
Speaker 1: in the writer room format. But you get the primary notes,
23:45
Speaker 1: Bishop td J, get the primary notes and hearing they
23:48
Speaker 1: come from me. What did you realize about taking on
23:51
Speaker 1: the project like this? And I know it put a
23:54
Speaker 1: smile on your face when it when you when it,
23:56
Speaker 1: you know you have two stages of the smile. First
23:58
Speaker 1: of all, she said yeah to you option in. Then
24:01
Speaker 1: Bishop TJ called you said you won't be in the project.
24:04
Speaker 1: Then you finally casting it, and now it's about the
24:07
Speaker 1: air and you're being interviewed national. I'm just one of
24:10
Speaker 1: many platforms and are interviewing you to promote this. Where
24:13
Speaker 1: are you ready emotionally with this project? Well, you know,
24:16
Speaker 1: here's the thing, um, when when td Jakes, when when
24:22
Speaker 1: you know TV Jake's and and Derrick Williams called me
24:24
Speaker 1: and said, hey do you have this project? Um, you
24:28
Speaker 1: know that was definitely a you know, a game changer
24:32
Speaker 1: for me because I had this project that was that
24:35
Speaker 1: I had shopped around town and that I owned, and
24:39
Speaker 1: then I was shopping around town and I had, um,
24:43
Speaker 1: you know, it could have been a different partner that
24:45
Speaker 1: I went with, but I felt that, you know, partnering
24:50
Speaker 1: with with with you know, Bishop Jake's what an extraordinary
24:54
Speaker 1: producer he is. And not only that, um, but his
24:58
Speaker 1: brand is just right in line with this this project.
25:03
Speaker 1: And so you know, for me, one of the lessons was,
25:09
Speaker 1: you know, you want to sometimes you just want to
25:11
Speaker 1: rush things and you want to just go with, you know,
25:14
Speaker 1: whatever offer is presented to you at first, but you
25:17
Speaker 1: really have to think about who you're going to be
25:20
Speaker 1: in business with and how you guys are gonna gel
25:25
Speaker 1: and does this partnership work for the good of the project.
25:29
Speaker 1: And I felt that this partnership definitely was perfect for
25:33
Speaker 1: this project. So um, that was you know when you
25:36
Speaker 1: talk about putting a smile on my face, you know,
25:38
Speaker 1: having this partnership with him is extraordinary for me. And
25:43
Speaker 1: as I look at other projects that I'm doing and
25:47
Speaker 1: being careful about who I choose as a partner, it's
25:52
Speaker 1: it's a I think it's a lesson for for all
25:54
Speaker 1: of us. Don't rush it, be more intentional with your decisions.
26:02
Speaker 1: Well you know, um, you've always been intentional. I know
26:04
Speaker 1: when we brought this project the reason I just really
26:07
Speaker 1: enjoyed talking about it because I know there's always a
26:09
Speaker 1: journey and just to see the transformation in you, you know,
26:12
Speaker 1: and I said, this is a good thing. You know,
26:14
Speaker 1: you know linkedn I just see, uh, follow your motivation
26:17
Speaker 1: and follow your stories and follow you because you really
26:20
Speaker 1: personalize your life. You put your life out there and
26:23
Speaker 1: to see this is being a part of that story
26:25
Speaker 1: that you're now ready to tell. I think it's amazing
26:27
Speaker 1: and I want to just say congratulations to you these
26:30
Speaker 1: two projects. You know, I want to talk about a
26:32
Speaker 1: couple of I'll bring you back on the show talking
26:33
Speaker 1: about Naty d fiance and like Junger not but that
26:38
Speaker 1: you know it's uh do you know united a fiance
26:41
Speaker 1: is seen in a hundred and sixty eight countries and territory.
26:45
Speaker 1: Well you know that it was big in my house
26:48
Speaker 1: and big my house, big in my office, is big everywhere.
26:50
Speaker 1: Because I can't understand how people do that. And then
26:53
Speaker 1: you sit up there interviewing these people like they normal people.
26:55
Speaker 1: Though that's what beginning me. You'd be like these people
26:59
Speaker 1: like you talk to Tom Hanks or somebody normal or
27:02
Speaker 1: something celebrity, and they'd be sitting up there like they
27:04
Speaker 1: got it going on. How do you sustain such credibility
27:08
Speaker 1: interviewing these people because you're wonderful, you got your right makeup? Right?
27:12
Speaker 1: These people crazy, they're crazy. Listen, here's here's the flip
27:18
Speaker 1: side of that. The show tells you. How about the
27:23
Speaker 1: when we talk about universal things, the universal theme of
27:28
Speaker 1: wanting to be loved? Everyone can identify with that, and
27:33
Speaker 1: that is why the show is so popular because everybody
27:38
Speaker 1: can identify with how far do I go to find love?
27:46
Speaker 1: So yes, so I as the host of the show,
27:51
Speaker 1: I have that empathy for everybody that I talked to. Well,
27:55
Speaker 1: you know, first of all, it's first of all, you're
27:58
Speaker 1: fantastic and just what I love about your life right now?
28:01
Speaker 1: You still with that allow you to stay in front
28:03
Speaker 1: of the camera. And then you have these upcoming projects
28:06
Speaker 1: on Lifetime and it's gonna be more. I'm just gonna
28:08
Speaker 1: let you know, Uh, Lifetime has found something with this
28:11
Speaker 1: series is right in line? Is uh female centric? The
28:16
Speaker 1: storylines were fantastic. The more breakout stars are being developed
28:20
Speaker 1: under your umbrella, you know, I see you. I'm just
28:23
Speaker 1: gonna throw this little title on you. I see you
28:25
Speaker 1: about to do what Will Packard did several years ago.
28:27
Speaker 1: You're gonna You're gonna start doing it as well. That's
28:30
Speaker 1: what Eivera Dovenet is doing as so many other people
28:33
Speaker 1: Shonda Rhimes is doing right now. You're going to put
28:36
Speaker 1: that hand on and run with it. Because what I
28:38
Speaker 1: saw and watching these two series was quality work. Stories.
28:42
Speaker 1: I want to share stories. I want to tell family stories,
28:45
Speaker 1: stories that can change people's lives. That's key right there,
28:49
Speaker 1: change people's lives and make their lives better. Fan congratulations
28:52
Speaker 1: Sean Robinson, thank you, Thank you so much. I really
28:57
Speaker 1: appreciate it. And uh, you know, from your mouth to
29:00
Speaker 1: God's ears, um, I hope that. Uh it's wonder New
29:05
Speaker 1: chapters are scary, Rashaan, as you know, but they can
29:09
Speaker 1: be so fulfilling. Um when you really like, sit down,
29:14
Speaker 1: think about what it is you have to offer. A
29:17
Speaker 1: lot of times when we get pigeon holed, we think that,
29:19
Speaker 1: you know, I've been doing this for a long time.
29:20
Speaker 1: I can't do anything else. But then when you start
29:23
Speaker 1: to like look at you know, you know, step out
29:26
Speaker 1: on faith, but also be prepared, educate yourself gain more
29:31
Speaker 1: knowledge about a particular area, talk to people who are
29:34
Speaker 1: in those fields. You know, there are so many more
29:37
Speaker 1: opportunities that you can take advantage of. Well, I know
29:40
Speaker 1: that for a fact that when I stepped away from
29:42
Speaker 1: manager Steve Harvey, it was it was a lot uncertainty.
29:46
Speaker 1: And you know, because a lot of people only know
29:47
Speaker 1: you from what you did previously, A lot of people
29:50
Speaker 1: don't know you from what you did on Access Hollywood,
29:53
Speaker 1: and so that compege and hold you in the relationships
29:56
Speaker 1: you have really don't allow you to move forward. But
29:58
Speaker 1: you're not only before you're running. You're running. In fact,
30:02
Speaker 1: you're driving forward in a very fancy car. It's called
30:06
Speaker 1: like you. I appreciate you for coming on and like
30:09
Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm gonna see he's post out there. Of
30:11
Speaker 1: course I'm putting my Newsletterer putting on social media. I'm
30:14
Speaker 1: gonna tell everybody to watch it. More important that everybody's
30:16
Speaker 1: gonna watch my podcast as was here my podcast. And
30:20
Speaker 1: thank you for coming on the show again. Okay, can
30:22
Speaker 1: I ask you one favor? Um? Can you make me
30:26
Speaker 1: a sweep potato pie? Yes? I can. In fact, you
30:30
Speaker 1: know some I'm gonna text your picture and I'm gonna
30:33
Speaker 1: make you one. And in fact, I'm gonna be on
30:34
Speaker 1: in l A in like three weeks and we're gonna connect.
30:36
Speaker 1: Okay seriously, And I got an office down here in Atlanta.
30:40
Speaker 1: You just opened up a cannon worm. I am going
30:42
Speaker 1: to make you a sweeper Tata. In fact, when I
30:44
Speaker 1: make it, Sean, you'll be standing right next to me. Okay,
30:48
Speaker 1: perfect deal. Because those dessert and I got having of those.
30:56
Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you some stuff because because you shot
30:58
Speaker 1: the movies down here in Atlanta, right shoot him in
31:00
Speaker 1: las Okay, when you come back down here for the
31:02
Speaker 1: next series, and you're coming back down here, I'm just
31:04
Speaker 1: gonna let you know you the movies are that good.
31:07
Speaker 1: Lust and envy are that good. When you come back
31:09
Speaker 1: down there, well, connection, bring you by the office and
31:11
Speaker 1: we go eat, talk and do some private conversations about
31:15
Speaker 1: the next put it on podcast do stuff. Because I'm
31:17
Speaker 1: launching on an old TV show called Rushan's Kitchen, so
31:20
Speaker 1: it's a cookie show. Okay, great, so this is a
31:22
Speaker 1: perfect time. It's perfect. Okay, thank you, I appreciate you. Okay,
31:27

Speaker 1: and see a tree, they see the wrinkled face of
32:37

34:10
Speaker 1: about what I knew and what I was most passionate
34:12
Speaker 1: about at this moment my my career. I'm very hard
34:16
Speaker 1: on the system and my critique of it, but I'm
34:19
Speaker 1: also uh cognitant of the fact that the individual has
34:23
Speaker 1: to step up and make it their education a priority
34:26
Speaker 1: in her activists pursuit. The Cafe Marcha Squag Award represents
34:30

34:54
Speaker 1: She told me her first lead story role Envy, A
34:58
Speaker 1: seven Daily Since story. But that's not all she's doing
35:01
Speaker 1: besides this new movie Nby. Next up for Surreya, She's
35:05
Speaker 1: co starring in the upcoming BT movie Favorite Son, directed
35:08
Speaker 1: by the one and Only Robin Gibbons, which is expect
35:11
Speaker 1: to be released this year. She's a new single coming
35:14
Speaker 1: out soon called tell Me About My sit featuring my
35:17
Speaker 1: boy Rick Ross. Sourrea was also just recently announced the
35:20
Speaker 1: Jordan the Stars dramma series This Girl busy. Who's managing her?
35:24
Speaker 1: Who's managing her? I want to manage her. She's doing everything.
35:28
Speaker 1: The star drama series Black Mafia Family executive dude by
35:31
Speaker 1: the one and only fifty cents, not fifty cents in
35:35
Speaker 1: a recurring role. Please work with money main conversations. I'll
35:38
Speaker 1: tell you she's a rising stars. She's beautiful, she's fantastic.
35:40
Speaker 1: I just saw her in her starring role Envy A
35:43
Speaker 1: seven Deadly Sins story. Please work with the money. Making
35:46
Speaker 1: conversations sirea an intro. First of all. First of all,
35:54
Speaker 1: girl does the word Okay, you know, I've been fortunate
35:57
Speaker 1: this business manage a lot of big talent. We're with
36:00
Speaker 1: a lot of big talent, and I know when the
36:01
Speaker 1: resume started to come together, and you and we always
36:04
Speaker 1: shut down during the pandemic, and it all call us, all, God,
36:08
Speaker 1: how did you really handle the pandemic? And then to
36:11
Speaker 1: b start, you know, putting yourself in the position where
36:14
Speaker 1: you've got all these properties that are happened in one
36:18
Speaker 1: and they will extend into let's walk through that pandemic
36:21
Speaker 1: shutdown and then starting to come out of it, out
36:24
Speaker 1: of the pandemic funk. Yeah, so interesting. The pandemic hit
36:29
Speaker 1: us all, and you know we're all unprepared and not
36:31
Speaker 1: ready for that one, especially not to be out of
36:34
Speaker 1: commission for nearly a year or more for some people.
36:39
Speaker 1: UM Empire ended abruptly two episodes, shy of finishing our
36:46
Speaker 1: sixth season, our six in final season. So it's sent
36:50
Speaker 1: me home to l a Um much like the rest
36:53
Speaker 1: of the world pretty much in shock. Um and the
36:57
Speaker 1: year continued on as we know it is, trying to
37:00
Speaker 1: figure out health and family and figure out what's what's next.
37:04
Speaker 1: Thank god. Um I I did like I don't know,
37:07
Speaker 1: a hundred self tape auditions throughout Quarantine, and and you know,
37:11
Speaker 1: towards the end when things started opening back up is
37:14
Speaker 1: when I kind of broke through, and um I landed
37:17
Speaker 1: my first lead role Envy, which is the first thing
37:20
Speaker 1: I shot out of Quarantine back in December something like that.
37:25
Speaker 1: Um So that was basically how it happened for me.
37:29
Speaker 1: Quarantine was very much of a test um and a trial. UM.
37:35
Speaker 1: I learned a lot about myself and a lot about
37:38
Speaker 1: my family. It was a much needed break though, because
37:41
Speaker 1: I was going for six seasons straight of Empire, which
37:44
Speaker 1: is like six years um And it was definitely a
37:47
Speaker 1: much needed break that I needed for just to be
37:50
Speaker 1: still and and be in the moment. But you're an
37:53
Speaker 1: amazing thing about because we all know Hollywood is, and
37:57
Speaker 1: you know, you can get on the series and you
37:59
Speaker 1: just buy a new car. That might be the biggest
38:01
Speaker 1: nestake because they can get canceled and to be on
38:03
Speaker 1: a series that you know, just just I mean, it
38:06
Speaker 1: was a rocket ship launched for that series because it
38:08
Speaker 1: did something that never happened in the history of television.
38:11
Speaker 1: It grew every week. It just kept getting bigger and
38:14
Speaker 1: bigger and bigger and so and you own that launching pad.
38:17
Speaker 1: Tell us how it affected you. It is all positive,
38:20
Speaker 1: but nobody you know you. You just get on the show.
38:22
Speaker 1: First of all. You get on show it happy to
38:23
Speaker 1: be working, first of all. Let's get that out the way.
38:26
Speaker 1: Happy to get to working, to pay some checks. And
38:27
Speaker 1: you wanted to keep working so you can build some
38:30
Speaker 1: momentum and put some money in the account and call
38:32
Speaker 1: yourself a working actor or actress. Talk about this, that
38:36
Speaker 1: whole beginning portion of the Empire explosion. Well, for me,
38:42
Speaker 1: you're absolutely correct. For me, starting Empire was very different.
38:46
Speaker 1: Was my first kind of TV role UM and UM
38:54
Speaker 1: it was just that so many first experiences dealing with
38:57
Speaker 1: Empire and in the new phase the new found success
39:01
Speaker 1: around it. Obviously, by the third fourth episode, we were
39:06
Speaker 1: the leading numbers um TV since I think they said
39:10
Speaker 1: since the Cosby Show. So it was. It was huge
39:14
Speaker 1: all over the world, which which also made it differently
39:17
Speaker 1: because it was you know, main TV Fox, So, UM,
39:21
Speaker 1: it was a lot of adjusting For me. I was
39:23
Speaker 1: nineteen at the time, and um, I was coming straight
39:27
Speaker 1: from college at that time, and I was I was
39:32
Speaker 1: just you know, taking the punches as they roll and
39:35
Speaker 1: and learning so much and working so extremely hard on
39:39
Speaker 1: that show. I a lot of my earlier performances on
39:43
Speaker 1: the show was um dancing dance, big dance numbers, and
39:48
Speaker 1: so I would rehearse, you know, twelve sixteen hours, shoot
39:53
Speaker 1: for sixteen to eighteen hours while wearing heels, while having
39:58
Speaker 1: to reside lines. It was it was boot camp for me, um,
40:02
Speaker 1: to be honest, And I'm so grateful for the experience though,
40:06
Speaker 1: because I know what hard work is and how to
40:09
Speaker 1: make you know, something's glamorous, its empire, how to make
40:13
Speaker 1: that happen. Yeah, it's really wonderful because, like you said, uh,
40:18
Speaker 1: coming from African American perspective to see the explosion of
40:22
Speaker 1: color program or brown color program or African American programming.
40:25
Speaker 1: You know, I'm so happy that you got the experience
40:29
Speaker 1: disawakening of Hollywood where you have options and to be
40:32
Speaker 1: in a series of Lifetime. You know it is executive
40:35
Speaker 1: produced by Sean Robinson, the Bishop TV Jake's or lifetime
40:39
Speaker 1: starring role. Okay, now, did did did Empire prepare you
40:43
Speaker 1: for the starring roles? Sorea. Um, Empire definitely did. I
40:48
Speaker 1: would say I would give things to Empire for so many,
40:51
Speaker 1: so many gross spurts in my career. Um, definitely, I've
40:57
Speaker 1: had a lot of training. Um, I've I'm always wanted
41:02
Speaker 1: to get better at my craft. So on my off time,
41:05
Speaker 1: I was taking acting classes actually by Tasha Smith at
41:09
Speaker 1: her acting school and she's also was on Empire. Yes, Um,
41:15
Speaker 1: I love her, I adore her. Um, but I was
41:18
Speaker 1: always I'm always looking to get better at everything I do.
41:23
Speaker 1: So that was something that I self invested in all
41:26
Speaker 1: my off time to make sure that when I got
41:30
Speaker 1: any other type of role, I would be ready for
41:32
Speaker 1: it and I know how to attack it, you know,
41:35
Speaker 1: head first. Um. For me, it was it was more
41:39
Speaker 1: of a destiny thing how I ended up on Empire.
41:43
Speaker 1: So I didn't go to acting school. Uh, but I
41:47
Speaker 1: definitely invested myself into time into doing that on my
41:51
Speaker 1: off time. Okay, now, okay, now, so you told me
41:53
Speaker 1: some information. You said Rashan it was a destiny thing
41:56
Speaker 1: about Empire. I didn't go to acting school, but you
41:59
Speaker 1: left that, So how did you get to role? Yes,
42:03
Speaker 1: So basically what happened is I was I had just
42:07
Speaker 1: enrolled into college. Um, I was going to a community
42:13
Speaker 1: college in in l A. And my one of my
42:15
Speaker 1: good friends called me, and I was doing some modeling
42:19
Speaker 1: at that time, some print work. I just did not
42:22
Speaker 1: have a theatrical agent at the time, which a theatrical
42:26
Speaker 1: agent helps you get roles in on TV and uh words,
42:31
Speaker 1: speaking characters and things like that. So U my friend
42:37
Speaker 1: called me and he's he's kin of Lee Daniels. And
42:41
Speaker 1: he said, you know my uncle Wholice Lee Daniels. I
42:44
Speaker 1: didn't know this. This is this is getting out of hand. Okay,
42:49
Speaker 1: So he's kid too, you know, some country talking, you
42:52
Speaker 1: know that, right, he's kid to Lee Daniels. I didn't
42:55
Speaker 1: know Duke Daniels. You know all Lee days at that point,
42:58
Speaker 1: you know Oscar all all this stuff. This is Lee Daniel,
43:01
Speaker 1: Lee Daniel. And so your little natanyo behind at community
43:05
Speaker 1: college because seeing Dan look beautiful continue with just I'm
43:08
Speaker 1: just sitting up there all up with you. Yeah, yeah,
43:11
Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Yeah. And so he told me, you know,
43:16
Speaker 1: he's like, you know, they're they've been looking for this character.
43:19
Speaker 1: They've been auditioning, you know, they've auditioned all over the world.
43:22
Speaker 1: At this point, for for the whole cast of Empire UM,
43:26
Speaker 1: and they haven't found their girl. And I said, well,
43:29
Speaker 1: of course I would love to audition. You know. I
43:31
Speaker 1: sent him all my stuff and he sent it to
43:34
Speaker 1: the people of Powers that Be UM and they said, yeah,
43:37
Speaker 1: let's see her. She has a great look. And I
43:40
Speaker 1: auditioned about two or three times and we got a
43:44
Speaker 1: call from Lee Daniel saying, she we love her, she's perfect.
43:48
Speaker 1: She has the audition for Fox. UM. So I auditioned
43:52
Speaker 1: for Fox. I went to Fox Network in Beverly Hills
43:55
Speaker 1: and I auditioned there and I got the role, and
43:58
Speaker 1: they shipped me to Chicago first out there. Now, Chicago
44:04
Speaker 1: one of my favorite cities, by the way, So you're
44:06
Speaker 1: going you're in great stumping grounds. Of course, the winter.
44:09
Speaker 1: You learned some things about Chicago wintertime. You better you
44:12
Speaker 1: better learn how to dress in Chicago for winter, because
44:15
Speaker 1: it's not like any other winter, l a girl. You
44:17
Speaker 1: learned that, right, absolutely, absolutely absolutely. Now here's the beauty
44:24
Speaker 1: of this conversation. Because you told me earlier you're taking
44:27
Speaker 1: acting classes now with Tasha smith soud meant that when
44:30
Speaker 1: you was auditioning all that was natural, correct, Yes, Okay, Okay,
44:35
Speaker 1: now let's let's talk about confidence. What what what allowed you?
44:39
Speaker 1: Because I can't act. I'm gonna just be honest it.
44:41
Speaker 1: I can't act. I can do stand up comedy. I
44:43
Speaker 1: can motivate you, I can interview you. But put the
44:47
Speaker 1: script in front of me, I fall apart. What what?
44:49
Speaker 1: What natural skill did you have allowed you to get
44:53
Speaker 1: through that audition? Because you have to have confidence because
44:55
Speaker 1: they kept asking you to come back, so you had
44:57
Speaker 1: no background on how do I do our change up?
45:01
Speaker 1: Do I get louder? What do I do? Were you?
45:03
Speaker 1: Were you talking to anybody between the auditions? SURRAYA or what? No? No,
45:09
Speaker 1: no no. At the time, it was me and my mom.
45:11
Speaker 1: She stayed up with me going over lines, and we
45:14
Speaker 1: just kind of took it to the approach that we think,
45:17
Speaker 1: you know, it was pretty straightforward, um, that we think
45:21
Speaker 1: it should have and and it worked the first time,
45:23
Speaker 1: so we're like, let's do the same thing. Um. I
45:26
Speaker 1: just made sure I was off the book obviously that
45:29
Speaker 1: that means that I memorized everything and um and yeah,
45:33
Speaker 1: I went in there the second time and we had
45:36
Speaker 1: to because it's the music show, we had to sing
45:37
Speaker 1: and I had to sing rep and recite lines because
45:43
Speaker 1: you gotta killing. I can't wrap, I can't sing, so
45:46
Speaker 1: your boys already out. You know, I'm already out. Okay,
45:49
Speaker 1: it was It was very nerve wracking, but but I
45:52
Speaker 1: got through it and I think, um, well, obviously they
45:56
Speaker 1: loved it. And you know what was really cool that
45:58
Speaker 1: you brought up. I'm sorry not to go off topic
46:00
Speaker 1: too much, but um, you brought up about African Americans,
46:05
Speaker 1: and it was really dope that the character I just
46:08
Speaker 1: came as myself and at this time I had big,
46:11
Speaker 1: my big, curly hair and that's just how my hair is.
46:13
Speaker 1: It was my whole life. And that made such a
46:17
Speaker 1: huge impact that I had no idea that would on
46:21
Speaker 1: TV because I didn't realize that so many African American
46:24
Speaker 1: actresses didn't wear their natural hair on TV. I didn't
46:27
Speaker 1: know that, and so when I appeared with my big
46:31
Speaker 1: AFROCA box network, UM, it was I have so many
46:38
Speaker 1: young black girls and in so many uh natural community
46:45
Speaker 1: and natural uh companies for hair that reached out to
46:49
Speaker 1: me and I it was it was really awesome to
46:52
Speaker 1: um have an impact on people in that way. He
46:54
Speaker 1: was the funny part about it. A lot of people
46:57
Speaker 1: thought it wasn't real, right, I because that wasn't That's
47:03
Speaker 1: not normal. That's not normal, you know. But if you've
47:05
Speaker 1: been we've been straight. Oh that's our hair. That's she's
47:08
Speaker 1: wearing a wig. That's not our hair. That's not a hair.
47:10
Speaker 1: And that's why, you know, watching the series and watching
47:13
Speaker 1: you grow, because it's really interesting when I watched young
47:16
Speaker 1: talent like you, because you're special, believe in your special
47:19
Speaker 1: you gifted. And but I want to ask this other
47:21
Speaker 1: question before we moved to the series and talk about
47:23
Speaker 1: Envy A seven daily scenes, because I want to talk
47:25
Speaker 1: about learning your audition as a natural actress, natural instincts
47:30
Speaker 1: and followed your gun along with your mom, natural instincts.
47:33
Speaker 1: Then you got on the series and then you went
47:35
Speaker 1: to Tasha Smith. What did you learn from her classes
47:38
Speaker 1: that enabled you to improve as an actress and prepare
47:41
Speaker 1: you for elite series like that. You're doing an Envy
47:44
Speaker 1: that's airing on Lifetime. Oh my gosh, so much. I
47:48
Speaker 1: learned technique. I learned different exercises in ways to get
47:53
Speaker 1: into the character quicker, especially for auditions. Um. I learned
47:59
Speaker 1: she she brought me out of my shell. Um, Tasha
48:02
Speaker 1: brought me out of my shell. For sure. I learned
48:06
Speaker 1: how to just let go and be free in the moment.
48:08
Speaker 1: And that's something that the Taragy and Terrence actually told
48:13
Speaker 1: me as well. UM. But to be able to put
48:15
Speaker 1: it on its feet and really do it yourself is
48:19
Speaker 1: where you learn, okay, I can do this, and when
48:21
Speaker 1: you have confidence that you know you can do it.
48:24
Speaker 1: And I had to breakthrough UM class one time and
48:28
Speaker 1: and and it was went really really well. And from
48:31
Speaker 1: then on I said, okay, like I can, I can.
48:34
Speaker 1: I can tackle anything any role that comes my way.
48:37
Speaker 1: And and Quarantine really strengthened me because I auditioned so much.
48:44
Speaker 1: I sent in so many self tapes, so many self tapes,
48:48
Speaker 1: and believe me, self tapes can be UM not always
48:51
Speaker 1: uh the best thing to do, because you don't know
48:54
Speaker 1: because you're looking at the first of all, you have
48:56
Speaker 1: no makeup on. You don't know you dressed an average.
48:58
Speaker 1: So really I was tall. Self tastes like doing stuff
49:01
Speaker 1: in black and white, because I always tell you people
49:03
Speaker 1: the black and white era, before they had color and
49:05
Speaker 1: explosion and blood, you really had to act on black
49:09
Speaker 1: and white movies black and solutely and those are my
49:12
Speaker 1: favorite to watch. And so sending the self tape footage.
49:15
Speaker 1: It's like, you really better be able to act when
49:17
Speaker 1: you send another because there there there's nobody that uses
49:19
Speaker 1: just a blank wall behind you because you want to
49:21
Speaker 1: keep me clean and you just read the line and
49:23
Speaker 1: you deliver it. So bravo, bravo. Now let's talk about
49:26
Speaker 1: this series where you know when you stepped up your game, Soraya.
49:30
Speaker 1: You know I'm saying Kesha Joones that I got the
49:33
Speaker 1: name right, Keetsa Jones, Right, Yeah, just the Kesha Jones third,
49:36
Speaker 1: the keeps it Jones story, A little sad little girl
49:38
Speaker 1: tell us about the Keetsa Jones and the message of envy. Yes,
49:44
Speaker 1: so envy. We all have dealt with that. I'm sure
49:47
Speaker 1: at some point in our lives. Jealousy and envy, right um.
49:51
Speaker 1: Keisha has come from a lot of loss in her
49:54
Speaker 1: life and a lot of struggle, and a lot of
49:57
Speaker 1: absence and a lot of longing for some and she
50:00
Speaker 1: doesn't have. So she she her mom dies and and
50:05
Speaker 1: she find finds her strange father that she never knew.
50:08
Speaker 1: And the other thing that she finds when she finds
50:11
Speaker 1: her father is how successful he is, and that she
50:14
Speaker 1: has a sister. She didn't know this part you know
50:18
Speaker 1: of her life, and um, envy comes with that because
50:24
Speaker 1: we're talking about a girl that sleeps in her car
50:26
Speaker 1: and it goes to work and take takes bird baths
50:29
Speaker 1: and goes to work. And then she she learns of
50:31
Speaker 1: her dad and her sister and they live in a
50:33
Speaker 1: mansion and they drive a nice car and they have
50:36
Speaker 1: a very respectful, beautiful, loving relationship with each other. And
50:42
Speaker 1: she enviies this so much so to where she does
50:45
Speaker 1: things that are out of her character. Um. I really
50:49
Speaker 1: love that this is a T. D. Jake's production. There's
50:52
Speaker 1: some faith in there that is really cool. It's not overbearing,
50:56
Speaker 1: but it's definitely a streamline in the movie where you
51:00
Speaker 1: know Keisha has some some she's shooting with some faith
51:07
Speaker 1: issues with her relationship with God, and we see her
51:10
Speaker 1: redemption at the end. And so I'm people to see this.
51:15
Speaker 1: Let me just talk about you and this character development,
51:18
Speaker 1: because I don't want everybody, I don't want to gloss
51:20
Speaker 1: over the the the character changes. You have to make
51:25
Speaker 1: the emotional changes because it is a it's a faith
51:28
Speaker 1: based movie with all not heavy faith. I would put
51:31
Speaker 1: it like that, it's not heavy faith, but it's about
51:34
Speaker 1: envy and we all deal with it. And your character
51:37
Speaker 1: is about you know, being shown an opportunity and how
51:40
Speaker 1: you deal with You have DC Young fly you know,
51:42
Speaker 1: he's he's like and he's like the look, he's like
51:44
Speaker 1: that little negative spirit. Always tell people talk about negative
51:47
Speaker 1: spirits and positive spirits. You know, you have your your
51:50
Speaker 1: new found father Elijah his character, he's your positive spirit.
51:55
Speaker 1: And then you have DC Young Flyer, he's your negative
51:57
Speaker 1: spirit that's on your shoulder, and your father trying to
52:01
Speaker 1: let you know that there's a sense of reality and
52:03
Speaker 1: trying to get you to buy into it. But then
52:06
Speaker 1: you have DC Young fly of telling you stick to
52:07
Speaker 1: the six to plan six to the plan because as
52:10
Speaker 1: we watch you drift through the movie, you start you
52:13
Speaker 1: start going back and forth. Should you do this, Should
52:16
Speaker 1: you come over to your father's side, who was a
52:18
Speaker 1: larger side of the world, or you should you stick
52:21
Speaker 1: to the original plan. That's what D C. C. C.
52:24
Speaker 1: Young Flies talking about. So talk about that because I
52:27
Speaker 1: thought that was key in me buying into your your
52:30
Speaker 1: strong acting as well as me staying with the movie
52:34
Speaker 1: because I know that was a hard role to be
52:37
Speaker 1: able to deliver. And also you had to play an
52:41
Speaker 1: evil spirit, a cunning person. So you you're a lot
52:44
Speaker 1: of things going on there. You know, you played the
52:46
Speaker 1: little you played the attractive person, you played the young sister,
52:51
Speaker 1: you played the mom who had lost the child. It
52:56
Speaker 1: was a lot of levels. How was you able to
52:58
Speaker 1: pull all those things off? So I don't want people
53:00
Speaker 1: that I don't want people to think that you're doing
53:02
Speaker 1: Empire too. You're not. You're doing a really deeply uh
53:07
Speaker 1: thought that role that it gives you a lot of
53:09
Speaker 1: different levels, and all of them you play effectively. I
53:14
Speaker 1: really appreciate that, um one, because I always said anything
53:19
Speaker 1: I do after Empire, I wanted to be groundbreaking in
53:23
Speaker 1: the way of people's perspective of me and and and
53:29
Speaker 1: showing real acting chops. So I really appreciate that, UM.
53:33
Speaker 1: And that's what I really loved about this character that
53:36
Speaker 1: she was. She had so manyse layers and she was
53:38
Speaker 1: so flawed, UM, which which I enjoyed because that's real, right.
53:44
Speaker 1: We all are so flawed and we have so many
53:47
Speaker 1: layers in trauma that we've been through. UM. So for
53:51
Speaker 1: each segment of the movie, I kind of broke it
53:53
Speaker 1: down UM and I was able to connect myself to
53:59
Speaker 1: those moments with real things that I've been through, um
54:03
Speaker 1: and and having empathy for her and not playing her
54:06
Speaker 1: so um like too vindictive. I feel like there is moments,
54:10
Speaker 1: like you said, where she was starting to believe, like, hey,
54:13
Speaker 1: I can't have this life with my dad and maybe
54:16
Speaker 1: they do want me around and maybe I am accepted
54:19
Speaker 1: and they love me. And then she has these moments
54:22
Speaker 1: where she feels a little rejected and she calls you know,
54:25
Speaker 1: she calls DC young flies character and she puts her
54:29
Speaker 1: back on the road. I think there's a degree polarity
54:36
Speaker 1: to her and in this movie, and that's what makes
54:39
Speaker 1: it so interesting to me, is because you're seeing this
54:42
Speaker 1: girl go through all of these emotions and but you
54:45
Speaker 1: also can relate to her um and by the end,
54:49
Speaker 1: she does get her redemption and he don't don't don't don't, don't,
54:52
Speaker 1: don't give much. Don't give us too much. Come so
54:55
Speaker 1: don't give too much. They need to watch this because
54:57
Speaker 1: because you know, I enjoyed, first of all, join the
55:00
Speaker 1: interview talking to you, because I love talking to young talent,
55:03
Speaker 1: and because there's such a future ahead of you, and
55:06
Speaker 1: we don't know what the future is. But you're a
55:08
Speaker 1: hard worker and if you stay true to the course
55:11
Speaker 1: and you have you know, you just brought up your
55:13
Speaker 1: mom several times, so you have a foundation to fall
55:15
Speaker 1: back on and your faith. And this movie is about faith.
55:18
Speaker 1: It allows you. And it's also a movie that is
55:22
Speaker 1: ah all African American cast, but it's relatable to anybody.
55:25
Speaker 1: I don't care if you're black, brown, white, you can
55:28
Speaker 1: reach into this movie and realize, you see that character
55:31
Speaker 1: Kesha Jones could be Lisa Lisa Epstein. Okay, that's that's
55:35
Speaker 1: because they We all have those parts in our lives
55:38
Speaker 1: that allows us to be disenfranchised and how do we
55:40
Speaker 1: react when the opportunity is given to us. And that's
55:43
Speaker 1: what stood out for me in this role. And that's
55:45
Speaker 1: what you was able to do. And when when I
55:48
Speaker 1: look at you now and there's a it's a high
55:50
Speaker 1: level of innocence that you show in this interview, and
55:54
Speaker 1: that's that I think that allows you to do what
55:56
Speaker 1: you do. Because when I when I look at pool,
56:00
Speaker 1: and I've been fortunately cast a lot of people from
56:02
Speaker 1: Nick Cannon to to Kim Willard, to Gabriel Union and
56:06
Speaker 1: to Roggi p Henson. You know, Terrence Howard. I know
56:08
Speaker 1: all these people, and and you're coming from a body
56:11
Speaker 1: of work where you had kind of like a masterclass
56:14
Speaker 1: working with these two people because their their styles are different.
56:17
Speaker 1: But that that to Roger Phinson, she no joke. Now
56:20
Speaker 1: if you if you want to come on the series
56:22
Speaker 1: now and learn somebody acting, come on. I tell everybody
56:25
Speaker 1: about Roggi, p Interne sore Both Taraggie is a force
56:29
Speaker 1: to be reckoned with um. I watched her and Terence
56:33
Speaker 1: many days when I was wrapped from work, and I said,
56:36
Speaker 1: can I just stay and please just watch them do
56:38
Speaker 1: this scene because they are so amazing and together so amazing,
56:43
Speaker 1: but so interesting separately. In in her and Terrence are
56:49
Speaker 1: just genius, and you know what it is to me,
56:53
Speaker 1: it's just they're fearless and they attack each moment like that.
56:58
Speaker 1: So they're definitely I to um forever will be my
57:02
Speaker 1: to Go twos in my head, in the back of
57:05
Speaker 1: my mind, I'll listen to them telling me just go forward,
57:09
Speaker 1: just go forward, let it go. We'll great. Well, I
57:12
Speaker 1: want to wrap talking about a couple of projects that
57:14
Speaker 1: you have coming up. Favorite Sons directed, Favorite Song Excuse
57:17
Speaker 1: Me directed by Robin Gibbons, and also Black Maffia. I
57:20
Speaker 1: know you can't tell us anything about that. That's sinsib
57:22
Speaker 1: we attract us down, beat us up. But let's talk
57:25
Speaker 1: about Favorite Son and what what what role you're playing
57:28
Speaker 1: that and also Black Mafia Family. Oh and Favorite Son
57:33
Speaker 1: super excited because Robert Robin Gibbons directed this and she's
57:37
Speaker 1: like one of my favorites. So I play UM a
57:43
Speaker 1: girlfriend and a choir member to the church. Um, a
57:46
Speaker 1: girlfriend to one of the pastor's sons, UM. And she
57:50
Speaker 1: also very larry character, which is awesome because she goes
57:53
Speaker 1: through something in faith with her faith as well, but
57:56
Speaker 1: more in the church because I feel like a lot
57:59
Speaker 1: of people on church UM, they're trying to put the
58:02
Speaker 1: best foot forward as they should, and they're trying to
58:05
Speaker 1: live their life right now. That doesn't exempt them from
58:07
Speaker 1: life like the rest of us. So I think the
58:10
Speaker 1: character that I play on that on the movie UM
58:13
Speaker 1: is a testament to that, and it's a testament to
58:15
Speaker 1: not judge each other so crucially and to understand that
58:19
Speaker 1: that life still happens to you. So there's some there's
58:22
Speaker 1: some twists and turns in there with my character. Once again, UM,
58:26
Speaker 1: you might you might lover you M hater, but it's
58:32
Speaker 1: super dope. I play opposite of Jonathan McReynolds and throw
58:36
Speaker 1: timmy um Mr Power Mr Power or Mr Power Mr
58:40
Speaker 1: Power uh, and he's amazing and so I'm so grateful
58:44
Speaker 1: to have shared the screen with them as well. Yes.
58:48
Speaker 1: And then in in the BMF story, I play the
58:52
Speaker 1: baby mother to uh Meach, which is one of the
58:56
Speaker 1: flintering brothers um and one of the main the main,
59:01
Speaker 1: the main guys who made it all happen. UM. So
59:05
Speaker 1: uh yeah, Well, well, first of all, I know you
59:08
Speaker 1: can't tell too much about that, you know, because it's
59:11
Speaker 1: it's it's but you've told me enough to know. First
59:13
Speaker 1: of all, you're fantastic. April seventeen will be looking at
59:16
Speaker 1: your lifetime starting in the row Envy. Also, you have
59:20
Speaker 1: a project coming out directed by Robin Gibbons called Favorite Son,
59:24
Speaker 1: and we're gonna see you in the Black Mafia Family
59:26
Speaker 1: a few ca ho the b mL, you know, one
59:29
Speaker 1: of those big fifty cents projects. Again, thank you for
59:32
Speaker 1: coming on the show. And now you have a new single,
59:33
Speaker 1: Whens does a single drop? Thank you. I'm so excited
59:37
Speaker 1: to be here. Um. The single is gonna drop in
59:39
Speaker 1: a couple of months. I don't have a heart date,
59:41
Speaker 1: but I will definitely let you guys know. Um, but
59:44
Speaker 1: definitely be on the lookout for that one because I'm
59:46
Speaker 1: so excited and everyone loves it when they hear it's
59:49
Speaker 1: perfect for the summer time. Well, you're you're awesome, and
59:52
Speaker 1: they keep winning and tell your mom how No, I
59:54
Speaker 1: don't know, but they're definitely when you're you have all
59:56
Speaker 1: the qualities of a great daughter and feel fortunate to interview.
1:00:01
Speaker 1: You're special and keep winning. Okay, thank you so much.
1:00:05
Speaker 1: You have time before a D and fiber Internet? What
1:00:10
Speaker 1: what are you doing in the dungeon? It's the only
1:00:12
Speaker 1: place where the bloody WiFi works. And you don't mind
1:00:15
Speaker 1: the spiders. Spiders let's fighters are now, they're everywhere. In
1:00:19
Speaker 1: the time after a D and T Fiber Internet, it's
1:00:22
Speaker 1: nice having fast, reliable WiFi in the whole house, for sure,
1:00:25
Speaker 1: the dawn of a better Internet era. With a T
1:00:28
Speaker 1: and T Fiber limited availability and select areas. Check eligibility
1:00:31
Speaker 1: at add dot com slash get Fiber. A T and
1:00:32
Speaker 1: T Smart WiFi extenders may be required. Soul Separately restrictions apply.
1:00:36
Speaker 1: What grows in the forest trees. Sure, no one else
1:00:40
Speaker 1: grows in the forest. Our imagination, our sense of wonder,
1:00:44
Speaker 1: and our family bonds grow too, because when we disconnect
1:00:47
Speaker 1: from this and connect with this, we reconnect with each other.
1:00:55
Speaker 1: The forest is closer than you think. Find a forest
1:00:58
Speaker 1: near you and start exploring. I Discover the Forest dot org,
1:01:02
Speaker 1: brought to you by the United States Forest Service and
1:01:04
Speaker 1: the AD Council. What grows in the forest trees? Sure
1:01:10
Speaker 1: you know what else grows in the forest. Our imagination,
1:01:13
Speaker 1: our sense of wonder, and our family bonds grow too,
1:01:16
Speaker 1: because when we disconnect from this and connect with this,
1:01:23
Speaker 1: we reconnect with each other. The forest is closer than
1:01:26
Speaker 1: you think. Find a forest near you and start exploring.
1:01:30
Speaker 1: I Discover the Forest dot org, brought to you by
1:01:32
Speaker 1: the United States Forest Service and the AD Council. My
1:01:36
Speaker 1: next guess are the Ghost Brothers. He mean the Ghost
1:01:40
Speaker 1: Brothers Dalla Sprat, Jawan Mass Marcus Harvey. The Ghost Brothers
1:01:45
Speaker 1: are the first and on the African American Para normal
1:01:47
Speaker 1: investigative team on TV. That is not right there, you know,
1:01:50
Speaker 1: right there? Okay, we always know that the black people
1:01:53
Speaker 1: always die first in horror moves. Okay, they're breaking that
1:01:56
Speaker 1: they're breaking that mold. They die. They go in and
1:01:59
Speaker 1: come out. The Ghost Brothers seamlessly playing comedy with a
1:02:02
Speaker 1: refreshingly straightforward approach to the paranormal in their own new
1:02:06
Speaker 1: series Lights Out, venturing across the country in different hotspots.
1:02:11
Speaker 1: Day Land want there was a little background by the
1:02:13
Speaker 1: hbc U, background by these brothers him, Daylan and Juwan
1:02:17
Speaker 1: meanwhile attending Clark Atlantic University and Marcus was a barber
1:02:21
Speaker 1: at Clark Atlantic Universe. That's how they all came together.
1:02:24
Speaker 1: Now at twenty eleven, they all had this idea thinking
1:02:26
Speaker 1: not the typical. They wan't thinking about rap music. They
1:02:29
Speaker 1: weren't thinking about it. They talk about the paranormal coasts.
1:02:33
Speaker 1: They seeked it out and they got discovered. So please
1:02:35
Speaker 1: working the money making conversation. They are the Ghost Brothers.
1:02:38
Speaker 1: Dayles Bratt, Juwan Mass and Marcus Harvey. Welcome brothers, man,
1:02:45
Speaker 1: and not to not to cut you off, but we
1:02:47
Speaker 1: did try rapping first. Definitely did. I was called drill.
1:02:54
Speaker 1: I'll just tell you it was wrapped, noting ya, and
1:03:03
Speaker 1: I was not Spinderella. Don't get it twist okay, okay,
1:03:07
Speaker 1: that was the real part of the group. Come on,
1:03:09
Speaker 1: Now that was a faild venture. What you don't do
1:03:11
Speaker 1: on my show, man, this money made a conversation talk
1:03:14
Speaker 1: about failed ventures. Now y'all wasn't rapping. All I know
1:03:17
Speaker 1: is the success of what y'all doing. Now your HBC
1:03:20
Speaker 1: you graduate attendees, you have the HBC experience, and we
1:03:24
Speaker 1: all know that for some reason, the world has discovered HBCU,
1:03:28
Speaker 1: especially in twenty with that revelation. You know that pride.
1:03:32
Speaker 1: I just interviewed my man Kenny Leon and also see
1:03:37
Speaker 1: you graduate and then so many more. What type of
1:03:39
Speaker 1: pride and number each one of you can respond to
1:03:42
Speaker 1: this individual. I want to get each one of your
1:03:44
Speaker 1: response about the HBCU experience and also what it is
1:03:47
Speaker 1: meant to your life moving forward. Yeah, I know for
1:03:50
Speaker 1: me Daylan uh HBC, the HBCU experienced literally changed my life.
1:03:55
Speaker 1: So when I graduated high school, Shoe Clark was the
1:03:58
Speaker 1: only colleague was like willing to listen to me, and
1:04:02
Speaker 1: they actually gave me a scholarship. Man, So they not
1:04:04
Speaker 1: only provided me a way to get to college, it's
1:04:07
Speaker 1: shaped and manufactured my life because I was able to
1:04:10
Speaker 1: move to Atlanta from Dallas, Texas and see a whole
1:04:13
Speaker 1: bunch of people that looked like me, my same age,
1:04:16
Speaker 1: making entrepreneurial moves. So up until the end, I'm looking
1:04:19
Speaker 1: at trying to get a job. But then when I
1:04:21
Speaker 1: get to college, I see people eighteen nineteen years old,
1:04:24
Speaker 1: what they on clothing line, UH, starting on record label
1:04:27
Speaker 1: promotion company, just all types of companies started by young minorities.
1:04:32
Speaker 1: And that's inspired my whole entrepreneurial spirit. And that's when
1:04:36
Speaker 1: you try to do wrap. That's when I tried to wrap.
1:04:38
Speaker 1: I tried to try to get back full circles. The
1:04:42
Speaker 1: origin story party promoting it was one of the two
1:04:49
Speaker 1: uh Man HBC experience was something that was just always
1:04:54
Speaker 1: brained in me. My mother went to an HBC U
1:04:58
Speaker 1: UH and so I was able to always go back
1:05:00
Speaker 1: to campus with her. And that's where I finally saw
1:05:04
Speaker 1: like this family culture at these historically black colleges and universities. UH.
1:05:09
Speaker 1: I went and when saw visit, when visited clark Land University,
1:05:13
Speaker 1: and like I was convinced at that point, Like I
1:05:17
Speaker 1: got to clark and, like Dylan said, you see a
1:05:20
Speaker 1: bunch of UH like minded individuals and you see people
1:05:23
Speaker 1: that look like you, and you're UH and you're like
1:05:26
Speaker 1: blown away by like this higher um institution of education
1:05:30
Speaker 1: and you're like this is this and it feels like home,
1:05:33
Speaker 1: Like it's not overly, it's not too big, Like you
1:05:35
Speaker 1: can still have a personal connection with the with the
1:05:38
Speaker 1: staff um and like you can still get this this education.
1:05:42
Speaker 1: But it's empowering blacks to to extride for excellence. And
1:05:46
Speaker 1: I think that's what like really captivated me about the
1:05:49
Speaker 1: that university Clark Atlanta specifically cool. Uh, Markut's telling about
1:05:53
Speaker 1: your experience. So my brother actually attended and graduated from
1:05:57
Speaker 1: Moore House College, and uh, I actually wanted to go
1:06:01
Speaker 1: to more House and actually didn't get attempted. That's all
1:06:05
Speaker 1: right because now that means that I'm a free agent
1:06:08
Speaker 1: to get an honorary degree from any HBCU that I won't.
1:06:12
Speaker 1: Now that we are at success in a historically black situation,
1:06:16
Speaker 1: you know, with us being the ghost but the first
1:06:18
Speaker 1: paranormal you know, investigation team out there, I think that
1:06:22
Speaker 1: any any HBC he wants to get me downs. But
1:06:25
Speaker 1: the way that I met my bros is um. Actually,
1:06:27
Speaker 1: you know, I still was connected to the campus. I
1:06:30
Speaker 1: was affiliated with the AUC gods re Choired and I
1:06:33
Speaker 1: used to start cutting hair, and Um, I actually started
1:06:35
Speaker 1: cutting Dylan's hair and then you know, eventually started meeting
1:06:38
Speaker 1: Jouan and then it just the rest is history. Okay,
1:06:42
Speaker 1: so you could do your barber by trade, I'm assuming right, Yes, sir,
1:06:47
Speaker 1: they say a celebrity barber, though what is the what
1:06:50
Speaker 1: is an unknown barber versus a celebrity barber? Markets, Please
1:06:53
Speaker 1: explain that to my listeners and view it well for me,
1:06:56
Speaker 1: Well for me specifically, I'm a celebrity who is a barber.
1:07:00
Speaker 1: I don't know about other celebrity barbers because they're not famous.
1:07:03
Speaker 1: I mean, I'm famous for hunting ghosts and I cut hair,
1:07:06
Speaker 1: So celebrity barber, you know, But uh no, not more
1:07:11
Speaker 1: so more so than not. My client telligence still with
1:07:13
Speaker 1: a whole bunch of celebrities from Nas grand Hill, Chris Webber,
1:07:17
Speaker 1: Damian Lillard, Clay Thompson, Steph Curry, Lebron, Um, I've cut
1:07:22
Speaker 1: on television shows Dayless, Pratt, Juwan, Jouan Mass, keep it looking,
1:07:29
Speaker 1: keep it little, keeping like keep me, keep keep people
1:07:32
Speaker 1: that you see on the regular basis because you don't
1:07:34
Speaker 1: see the Lebron and Steph Curry on regularly. Keep you
1:07:37
Speaker 1: the famous trio that you roll with. Yeah, now, listen
1:07:41
Speaker 1: these guys. You see us on the episode. You see
1:07:42
Speaker 1: how fresh these boys be. That because me, okay, always fresh.
1:07:48
Speaker 1: That's really important because I can't cut hair. I remember
1:07:50
Speaker 1: when I played. Because I know we got a couple
1:07:52
Speaker 1: of I'm making five member proud member of that as
1:07:55
Speaker 1: your guys are proud members of the right year. I
1:07:59
Speaker 1: don't know something, but we're all good. We're all good now.
1:08:02
Speaker 1: But because I remember my friend brother trying to give
1:08:05
Speaker 1: me the cut hair that was and I messed up
1:08:07
Speaker 1: the line. And you know, if you mess up a
1:08:08
Speaker 1: line on them, brother and you pledge it, that wasn't
1:08:11
Speaker 1: a good night for this young brother as a pledgey.
1:08:13
Speaker 1: So I respect you, Marcus more than you will ever
1:08:17
Speaker 1: know you because the mustache, that's that Scotty from the
1:08:22
Speaker 1: Whispers mustache. So I know you've got strong brother. I
1:08:25
Speaker 1: know you've got a good hand. Love. Now, let's talk
1:08:28
Speaker 1: about this series. Okay, ghost brothers. Now, how did this
1:08:33
Speaker 1: idea of paranormal paranormal um seekers are trying to find
1:08:40
Speaker 1: ghost How did that pop into you guys mind? And
1:08:43
Speaker 1: how to become part of the process, because I read
1:08:45
Speaker 1: this started on YouTube. Yeah, so me and Joe was
1:08:49
Speaker 1: actually roommates at the time. Then I tell people all
1:08:51
Speaker 1: the time, and you gotta think outside the box. If
1:08:54
Speaker 1: everybody is doing something that you need to turn the
1:08:56
Speaker 1: other way. And so I literally woke up one night
1:08:59
Speaker 1: about three in the morning and one of the ghost
1:09:01
Speaker 1: hunting shows was just randomly on TV. And I remember
1:09:04
Speaker 1: thinking to myself. I was like, I don't never see
1:09:07
Speaker 1: any representation of myself on any one of these shows.
1:09:10
Speaker 1: Why is it only white folks hunting ghosts? I mean,
1:09:13
Speaker 1: every race, religion, creed, culture dies. It ain't just white folks.
1:09:17
Speaker 1: So what happens to us when we passed away? And
1:09:21
Speaker 1: I grew up in the church. My mom is a pastor,
1:09:23
Speaker 1: and I've always been talking. Man, you know, you don't
1:09:25
Speaker 1: play with the church. You don't play with ghosts. You
1:09:28
Speaker 1: don't play with any of that. Like it's either a
1:09:30
Speaker 1: god and angels and everything else is the devil, right right,
1:09:34
Speaker 1: right right? Yeah? Yeah? And so literally I ran into
1:09:36
Speaker 1: the one's room man at three in the morning, was like, bro,
1:09:39
Speaker 1: I feel like we need to hunt ghosts. But he
1:09:46
Speaker 1: run in your mind into your room talking about ghost hunt.
1:09:49
Speaker 1: Now you knew he wasn't thinking straight at that point. Well,
1:09:52
Speaker 1: what did it really become a reality check for you
1:09:54
Speaker 1: that this could be a good idea? Honestly, just overnight,
1:09:58
Speaker 1: like I literally kicked in out my room, went back
1:10:00
Speaker 1: to sleep, woke up the next morning it was and
1:10:02
Speaker 1: it was still on my mind. I was like, Bro,
1:10:04
Speaker 1: we gotta do this. And when you say we gotta
1:10:06
Speaker 1: do that, because I gotta duo and Marcus, you know,
1:10:10
Speaker 1: the celebrity barber. Before he was a celebrity barber, he
1:10:13
Speaker 1: was just a sidekick barber. How did y'all get him
1:10:15
Speaker 1: in the loop now? You know, because he's commented relief
1:10:17
Speaker 1: when I watched the show, you know, Yeah, So I've
1:10:20
Speaker 1: been knowing Marcus for years that he was cutting everybody's
1:10:24
Speaker 1: hair and just knowing his personality. Marcus was doing stand
1:10:26
Speaker 1: up coming around the time, and he was just a
1:10:29
Speaker 1: really really funny guy, and I just knew that going
1:10:31
Speaker 1: into this, you know, going into television, you gotta have
1:10:36
Speaker 1: that breadth of fresh air. And Marcus was the perfect candidate.
1:10:39
Speaker 1: And the fact that he had no background and paranormal
1:10:42
Speaker 1: stuff just like we did. It was just a perfect
1:10:45
Speaker 1: storm try to create. Now, let's let's talk about this
1:10:48
Speaker 1: bar because you know, okay, again you cut their hair. Okay,
1:10:54
Speaker 1: crazy ideas are crazy ideas, over the top ideas over
1:10:57
Speaker 1: top of ideas. What's it much convincing you to roll
1:11:01
Speaker 1: with the brothers into this for paranormal ghost Hunting World.
1:11:07
Speaker 1: Not necessarily because I mean this is okay, this is
1:11:10
Speaker 1: two parties. No, because I know every idea that Dalon
1:11:15
Speaker 1: and Jowan come up with is typically successful because we're
1:11:18
Speaker 1: kind of like a success cluster prior to us getting
1:11:21
Speaker 1: on with um, you know, Discovery UM, so we were
1:11:25
Speaker 1: always always like you know, kind of collaboring with ideas,
1:11:29
Speaker 1: you know, prior to this, uh, this project. So I
1:11:32
Speaker 1: knew the idea was good. But then, like you said before,
1:11:34
Speaker 1: you know, Black Bolts, the only ghost that I was
1:11:36
Speaker 1: really comfortable with was the Holy Coast because we don't
1:11:39
Speaker 1: really you know, deal with the mother ghost, you know
1:11:41
Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So that's the only ghost that I
1:11:43
Speaker 1: was really prepared for. And and as and that was
1:11:47
Speaker 1: the only like asitency that I had, Like I didn't
1:11:50
Speaker 1: want to do any demonic things. We were sure that
1:11:52
Speaker 1: we wouldn't, and and we just kind of kept the paranormal. So,
1:11:55
Speaker 1: you know, since then, you know, it's kind of stretched
1:11:57
Speaker 1: out a little bit more and more. You know, they
1:11:59
Speaker 1: keep getting me out there further and further on that
1:12:01
Speaker 1: diving board and like, yeah, just jumping. I'm like, hey, bro,
1:12:04
Speaker 1: chill out, man, I'm still cutting their I don't know.
1:12:07
Speaker 1: I ain't trying to bring that over nobody. Let me
1:12:10
Speaker 1: ask you this market. I don't know if you remember
1:12:11
Speaker 1: this first conversation we had, man, I remember exactly where
1:12:14
Speaker 1: I was and you told me you was like, Man,
1:12:17
Speaker 1: I don't know, man, because I don't know if I
1:12:18
Speaker 1: want to be known as a ghost hunter man like uh,
1:12:24
Speaker 1: because I was like, bro, what is that gonna look like?
1:12:27
Speaker 1: You know what? Good brother dude over there? Like man,
1:12:33
Speaker 1: and uh, Yeah, we didn't know at the beginning. We
1:12:36
Speaker 1: didn't know if this show was gonna be like either
1:12:38
Speaker 1: you know, and we're talking with c A. You we
1:12:41
Speaker 1: didn't know that we're going to another network. You know.
1:12:43
Speaker 1: We don't know if they're gonna try to play us
1:12:45
Speaker 1: like with something on something like huck a Buck type stuff,
1:12:47
Speaker 1: and we ain't trying to be on that type of
1:12:49
Speaker 1: you know situation. If we're gonna if we're gonna be
1:12:51
Speaker 1: portrayed in the correct light So I was massively hesitant,
1:12:55
Speaker 1: like I mean, And there was even another show that
1:12:58
Speaker 1: kind of was like mirrored us that kind of went
1:13:01
Speaker 1: a little bit more on that direction that was just like,
1:13:04
Speaker 1: you know, outside of the way of like just a
1:13:05
Speaker 1: natural feel of like just curiosity for the paranormal and
1:13:09
Speaker 1: was more so looking at it like a joke. So
1:13:12
Speaker 1: when I saw that, when when Dayla and Juanna approached
1:13:15
Speaker 1: me with the idea, yes it was, it sounded brilliant
1:13:17
Speaker 1: because one like I've noticed that anytime there's a market
1:13:20
Speaker 1: that's wide open, we're able to set the market as
1:13:23
Speaker 1: the only one in that thing. So it was just
1:13:26
Speaker 1: brilliant in the sense that there was nobody, there's no competing,
1:13:29
Speaker 1: you know, um brands. We were able to set the market,
1:13:33
Speaker 1: We were able to set our own way and just
1:13:35
Speaker 1: be able to be um moved into a like a
1:13:39
Speaker 1: dope little situation that we have now with spinoffs. Well,
1:13:42
Speaker 1: here's the thing about it. I'm just telling you, guys,
1:13:44
Speaker 1: I'm from a professional standpoint because I've watched the show,
1:13:47
Speaker 1: and I watched and semi screeners of the upcoming season
1:13:49
Speaker 1: Lights Out. I enjoyed. Can nobody do what you guys do? Okay, nobody,
1:13:54
Speaker 1: don't even worry about somebody is trying to emulate, because
1:13:57
Speaker 1: each one of your characters are unique and they have
1:14:00
Speaker 1: credibility to it. And like you said, you know you're
1:14:03
Speaker 1: not running around there go oh lord, who Lord Lord,
1:14:05
Speaker 1: look around that bugging your eyes? Oh like you know,
1:14:08
Speaker 1: Buck Wheat went back in the twenties. And third, you're
1:14:10
Speaker 1: not doing that, you know, you guys are you know
1:14:13
Speaker 1: you did jump in that bathtub though you got in
1:14:15
Speaker 1: that bathtub though, you know with the water you float,
1:14:18
Speaker 1: you flowing that mark, you're flowing there. But uh. But
1:14:21
Speaker 1: the good thing about is, like each one of y'all's,
1:14:23
Speaker 1: it's a cool set up. And where the series works
1:14:26
Speaker 1: is you know, Daylan, you like the You like the instigator.
1:14:29
Speaker 1: You know, you leave your brothers in in a blind situation,
1:14:33
Speaker 1: a blind situation, and and and Jawan, you know he
1:14:36
Speaker 1: always like a go ahead, go getter. And then Marcus
1:14:39
Speaker 1: he always hesitant. But like Jawan, your characters like, let's
1:14:43
Speaker 1: go see what's going on. Marcus just like I don't know,
1:14:46
Speaker 1: I really don't know. But then come on. And then Dylan,
1:14:50
Speaker 1: I'm waiting the truck and check y'all out. Jawan you're
1:14:54
Speaker 1: you're go getter. What made you buy into that character?
1:14:57
Speaker 1: Because people go because you're be when there, everybody would
1:14:59
Speaker 1: call a food, He'll food here food. Why are you
1:15:01
Speaker 1: going in there? You know hits something bad going on
1:15:03
Speaker 1: there because you know black people talk to their TVs.
1:15:05
Speaker 1: Black people talk to the movie screens. So do you
1:15:07
Speaker 1: want talk about buying into that character? Because I know
1:15:10
Speaker 1: crazy man Marcus, he got a Black lives matter going
1:15:13
Speaker 1: into a jail. I know where he's coming from. Talk
1:15:16
Speaker 1: about your character you want, right, my character is not
1:15:22
Speaker 1: really a character, more so just a reflection of like
1:15:25
Speaker 1: my character in real life, and it's just about loyalty. Um,
1:15:28
Speaker 1: and I'm here to have my brothers back in an
1:15:30
Speaker 1: in any situation that I can with this ghost stuff. Um,
1:15:33
Speaker 1: you're just seeing me being as courageous as possible. But
1:15:36
Speaker 1: I'm terrified. I am terrified. Brother? Are you really? Are
1:15:40
Speaker 1: you really afraid of because you're always show up at
1:15:42
Speaker 1: night now you know, which is always like okay, brothers,
1:15:45
Speaker 1: so can you can go by there is a daytime period,
1:15:49
Speaker 1: but you're going in at night and so you're arrived
1:15:52
Speaker 1: and so daylan You do a great job of setting
1:15:56
Speaker 1: the danger tone what they're walking into, because again, you
1:16:01
Speaker 1: guys really don't know what you're walking into marketson juant,
1:16:04
Speaker 1: you really don't know. No no clue at all, no clue.
1:16:09
Speaker 1: A matter of fact, that was the point of contention
1:16:11
Speaker 1: um in this production. You know, just Scott, we've we've
1:16:14
Speaker 1: answered these a million times, questions or whatnot, but like
1:16:17
Speaker 1: this is something a little bit different. Like it was
1:16:20
Speaker 1: like because we've done this before in many different shows
1:16:23
Speaker 1: and we know how to like investigate, you know what
1:16:25
Speaker 1: I'm saying, But this production crew was just you know, like, yo,
1:16:29
Speaker 1: let's trust us in this situation and see about and
1:16:32
Speaker 1: see about um, you know, letting dally just throw you
1:16:35
Speaker 1: guys in there blind. And you know, typically we like me,
1:16:38
Speaker 1: Dylan and Juan, we were very like interactive when it
1:16:41
Speaker 1: comes to ideas, when it comes to um investigating styles,
1:16:45
Speaker 1: when it comes to like you know how we're gonna like,
1:16:48
Speaker 1: you know, provoke whatever we need to provoke to kind
1:16:50
Speaker 1: of get any type of response. And this was just
1:16:52
Speaker 1: a totally different show because like you know, Dylan was
1:16:55
Speaker 1: just one He don't even know how to read a map.
1:16:57
Speaker 1: So just to ask somebody send me somewhere who holding
1:17:00
Speaker 1: the map? Upside down left, I mean right, left, right,
1:17:05
Speaker 1: come on dogs. And then Juan, you know, like you said,
1:17:08
Speaker 1: Juan makes me have to get courageous because like I
1:17:11
Speaker 1: ain't playing that stuff. I was like, all right, let's go,
1:17:14
Speaker 1: and I'm like, dang, bro, I can't live like no
1:17:16
Speaker 1: pump in front of Juwan and Dylan out there cold,
1:17:18
Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So you know, like you said,
1:17:20
Speaker 1: you wanna actually be pulling us to do the He's
1:17:24
Speaker 1: the one that go okay, really do really? Do you
1:17:26
Speaker 1: know black people get killed in the movies. Black people
1:17:29
Speaker 1: do get killing hard movies. Now, Dayla, let's go back
1:17:32
Speaker 1: to your character. You know, Mr stay in the truck.
1:17:34
Speaker 1: Mr Stay in the truck and reveal us the dangerous
1:17:37
Speaker 1: situation that they may be walking into. So ultimately they
1:17:40
Speaker 1: have to trust you because you know the set up
1:17:43
Speaker 1: from a standpoint of what they be walking into you.
1:17:46
Speaker 1: So you have to protect them from any silly pitchers.
1:17:49
Speaker 1: You know, let's have some water hit them or or
1:17:51
Speaker 1: some or some trapdoors. Does that come up in conversation?
1:17:55
Speaker 1: You go, No, They're not gonna do that. How much
1:17:57
Speaker 1: involved with you with the pre production of what they're
1:18:00
Speaker 1: walking into? Daylight Uh, we're really really hands on from
1:18:04
Speaker 1: the beginning, because I mean, I think everybody that works
1:18:07
Speaker 1: for us knows where we stand and where we draw
1:18:09
Speaker 1: the line. So before we even started those Brothers, we
1:18:11
Speaker 1: were people at home watching these shows wondering if this
1:18:14
Speaker 1: stuff was really real. And we always say that we
1:18:17
Speaker 1: ever were blessed with the opportunity, but we don't want
1:18:19
Speaker 1: to fake anything, like we want to make sure whatever
1:18:21
Speaker 1: is happening, it's real time happening. So we make sure
1:18:24
Speaker 1: with the production company that we're not for you know,
1:18:27
Speaker 1: don't be trying to prank Jawan and markets. They'll be
1:18:29
Speaker 1: trying to make things happen to get reactions from them.
1:18:31
Speaker 1: That's not what we're here for, and we will walk
1:18:33
Speaker 1: off it's something like that ever happens or sway. My
1:18:40
Speaker 1: job is really just to make sure that that my
1:18:42
Speaker 1: guys are safe on the inside. And you know what
1:18:44
Speaker 1: I'm saying, They gotta trust me. You know what I'm
1:18:46
Speaker 1: saying that my fingers are ready to call now when
1:18:48
Speaker 1: one of the things get a little bit. But you
1:18:51
Speaker 1: know what he said, and Marc, he's he's ready to call.
1:18:55
Speaker 1: He didn't say run in right now, right now. You
1:19:00
Speaker 1: gotta watch him now. Okay, he told y'all exactly, Uh,
1:19:04
Speaker 1: my brothers are being eaten by ghosts. Come soon, let
1:19:09
Speaker 1: me explain what's going on. He didn't say, I'm running
1:19:11
Speaker 1: in with a firesting, which you're running in with a gun.
1:19:13
Speaker 1: I'm running in with more white people to save y'all.
1:19:16
Speaker 1: I'm a call like like that little white Dudlan the
1:19:18
Speaker 1: episode get Out, Get Out, Get Out. Now. Wow, you know,
1:19:24
Speaker 1: let's let's go back to this whole scenario. Because you
1:19:27
Speaker 1: guys are three visionaries. I'm gonna just put it out
1:19:29
Speaker 1: there like that because, like I said, you trusted your
1:19:31
Speaker 1: natural interestincts in twenty and leven, you know, you guys
1:19:34
Speaker 1: started to hunt ghost because the reason I'm saying that
1:19:37
Speaker 1: because right now you got Discovery calling people letting them
1:19:42
Speaker 1: know y'all coming. So there's a real respect and authority
1:19:46
Speaker 1: that's tied to that. In the early days, y'all were
1:19:49
Speaker 1: just black dudes coming in with an idea. How did
1:19:53
Speaker 1: y'all develop that idea and also develop credibility with your
1:19:57
Speaker 1: early ghost honey. So it's funny all three of us
1:20:01
Speaker 1: actually worked behind the scenes in television before we got
1:20:04
Speaker 1: in front of the camera. So we all parted from
1:20:06
Speaker 1: them at its about PA's production assistance, running, getting water closed,
1:20:11
Speaker 1: all that type stuff. So we had a respect for
1:20:13
Speaker 1: television and a work ethic from day one. So we
1:20:17
Speaker 1: were watching how television shows were being made on a
1:20:20
Speaker 1: day to day basis. So when the idea came around,
1:20:22
Speaker 1: we already had the vision of how to get it done,
1:20:25
Speaker 1: but we didn't know how we were going to get
1:20:27
Speaker 1: it out. And it's funny you say that because once
1:20:29
Speaker 1: we finished, we had this finished sesal reel of black
1:20:32
Speaker 1: guys hunting ghost we started taking meetings and back then
1:20:35
Speaker 1: we kept getting the same two responsive. Black people don't
1:20:39
Speaker 1: hunt ghosts, So where y'all gonna put the show at BT?
1:20:42
Speaker 1: Nah will pass? Black people don't hunt ghosts, so white
1:20:45
Speaker 1: people ain't gonnaanna watch you all, So where y'all to
1:20:47
Speaker 1: put you all any nah will pass. So we just
1:20:51
Speaker 1: kept getting passed and passed and passed. And it wasn't
1:20:53
Speaker 1: until about two thousand, fifteen sixteen. I don't know if
1:20:56
Speaker 1: you're familiar or remember the campaign oscars so a Wife.
1:21:00
Speaker 1: So that's when the media where they were saying there
1:21:02
Speaker 1: were not enough minority television shows getting recognition in mainstream media,
1:21:08
Speaker 1: and we were just fortunate enough to be ushered along
1:21:10
Speaker 1: in that window, which shows like Black Is, shows like
1:21:14
Speaker 1: Fresh off the Boat, So all these minority lead driven shows.
1:21:18
Speaker 1: We gotta just blessed us to kind of just sent
1:21:21
Speaker 1: shown in through that window those brothers, and man's gonna
1:21:24
Speaker 1: hit ever since. But but let me just let me
1:21:27
Speaker 1: not you didn't just sneaking. You guys are talented, man,
1:21:30
Speaker 1: and like you know, that's the thing with black boles, man,
1:21:33
Speaker 1: we gotta always get in the door a different way.
1:21:37
Speaker 1: Just let me just tell you this. Let me show
1:21:39
Speaker 1: that were more talented than the counterport. Let me just
1:21:42
Speaker 1: show you down day, because everybody got to get in, Okay,
1:21:45
Speaker 1: everybody got to get in. That's what That's why I
1:21:47
Speaker 1: want to just say here my compliment to you, all
1:21:49
Speaker 1: three of you guys. You cannot be replicated. You cannot
1:21:52
Speaker 1: be duplicated. Okay, Right, you guys are smart on screen,
1:21:56
Speaker 1: you're smart off camera. Okay. I see there's a story,
1:22:00
Speaker 1: like I was telling Marcus earlier prior to the interview,
1:22:03
Speaker 1: is that there's always a wrap up, a wrap wrap
1:22:06
Speaker 1: up tied to logic and so so it's not like
1:22:10
Speaker 1: you know, it might you know, the concept sounds kind
1:22:12
Speaker 1: of like, oh, black guys hunting ghosts, you know, but
1:22:15
Speaker 1: then you go through the process. You got the equipment
1:22:18
Speaker 1: and and then you and then you developed the scenarios,
1:22:22
Speaker 1: you set the storyline in place. Because all your storylines
1:22:24
Speaker 1: that you set up that they're walking into, I'm worried
1:22:27
Speaker 1: about these brothers. I am actually worried about these brothers
1:22:30
Speaker 1: because you said some crazy stuff, you know what I'm saying.
1:22:34
Speaker 1: And then I ain't gonna tell watch the episode. I'm
1:22:36
Speaker 1: not gonna tell y'all nothing about the storylines. All I
1:22:39
Speaker 1: know is that Daylan need his behind whoop. Let this
1:22:42
Speaker 1: boys walk into these environments. And he and he said,
1:22:45
Speaker 1: why you the first person see he needed buff whoop
1:22:50
Speaker 1: because he yeah, he said bye bye. I was sitting
1:22:54
Speaker 1: and wait out here, you know, in the truck or
1:22:56
Speaker 1: the vand or another somewhere comfortable, somewhere comfortable, probably around
1:23:03
Speaker 1: some white people eating that's what they eat, okay, y'all.
1:23:06
Speaker 1: In this Hunted there was one time though, there was
1:23:10
Speaker 1: one time where he was outside of the lighthouse, uh,
1:23:14
Speaker 1: and he was getting taught by the mosquitoes. And I
1:23:16
Speaker 1: was like, right, I love it. I love it. I
1:23:21
Speaker 1: love it. I love it. I was like, yeah, buddy,
1:23:26
Speaker 1: like when the rabbit got the gun baby. Now sometimes
1:23:29
Speaker 1: he's events or last more than one day. What's the
1:23:33
Speaker 1: whole process of you go in and then you're gonna
1:23:36
Speaker 1: go back? You on, come on now, really don't care.
1:23:38
Speaker 1: You got and you got out. Honestly, if it wasn't
1:23:42
Speaker 1: for having to like connect the dots on the story,
1:23:45
Speaker 1: I'm really cool with a one day investigation. But you
1:23:48
Speaker 1: need to go back and see what we just saw.
1:23:51
Speaker 1: The way it set up, man, it takes a week
1:23:53
Speaker 1: to do an entire episode. Wows. Yeah, So we'll get
1:23:58
Speaker 1: there the first night. We're typically doing baseline investigation. So
1:24:01
Speaker 1: that's where we pull up to the spot. Uh, Daln
1:24:04
Speaker 1: knows the location, Marcus and I don't know anything. That's
1:24:07
Speaker 1: what we have our our fire like Notorious Pop the
1:24:10
Speaker 1: trunk scene. We get out and we hit the location,
1:24:14
Speaker 1: We investigate, we pull all the evidence together where we
1:24:17
Speaker 1: find we share with Dalen. Dalen then fills us in
1:24:21
Speaker 1: on all the stuff that um, he knew, and so
1:24:23
Speaker 1: now we're connecting these pieces, you know what I mean? Uh,
1:24:26
Speaker 1: And then we have another investigation later on, and that's
1:24:30
Speaker 1: to kind of tie to all the whole episode together
1:24:32
Speaker 1: with some of the previous claims and history of surrounding
1:24:36
Speaker 1: the place man um and it all comes together over
1:24:40
Speaker 1: a week's time. Uh. We then we we sit down
1:24:43
Speaker 1: with whoever is like the owner or somebody who's having
1:24:47
Speaker 1: issues with the location, and we provide them with the
1:24:49
Speaker 1: clarity or answers to questions that they've been looking for. Um.
1:24:51
Speaker 1: And that's that like that wrap up that you're talking about,
1:24:54
Speaker 1: you know what I mean? We have that that that
1:24:56
Speaker 1: logical conclusion and we don't necessarily say we have all
1:25:00
Speaker 1: the answers, but we do want to give you some
1:25:02
Speaker 1: some clarity or maybe we'll tell you like bro, it's
1:25:05
Speaker 1: just jing Haunett like we like you might want to
1:25:08
Speaker 1: put that on the market like or you might want
1:25:10
Speaker 1: to you might want to split that rent up because
1:25:12
Speaker 1: your beauty hey Daylan and you know Joan and Marcus
1:25:23
Speaker 1: famous come you guys way because of this, you know,
1:25:25
Speaker 1: and that fame is always interesting because you don't know
1:25:28
Speaker 1: how people react to that fame, you know. So I
1:25:30
Speaker 1: know being your your Barbara Marcus uh hasn't helped your
1:25:34
Speaker 1: your clientele and help your role because I want each
1:25:36
Speaker 1: one of you guys, to explain this, how do ghost
1:25:39
Speaker 1: pump Buster fame, A ghost Brothers fame? Excuse me? Has
1:25:42
Speaker 1: possibly impacted your careers and where we go from here?
1:25:45
Speaker 1: Starting with you Dayla uh Man. To be completely honestly,
1:25:51
Speaker 1: I don't feel like we're famous, man. I feel like
1:25:53
Speaker 1: our demographic of people that watched the show are Middle America,
1:25:58
Speaker 1: and I feel like every day we don't just get
1:26:01
Speaker 1: noticed walking about and people running up to its like
1:26:04
Speaker 1: you would think and with most TV shows, So I
1:26:06
Speaker 1: feel like we still get to have that little bit
1:26:08
Speaker 1: of an amenity with uh, you know, which is our lives,
1:26:11
Speaker 1: which is super dope. But what it has done is
1:26:14
Speaker 1: just open up a level of conversation for us, because genuinely,
1:26:18
Speaker 1: it's not a room that we can't walk into that
1:26:20
Speaker 1: once they figure out what we do that we don't
1:26:23
Speaker 1: automatically become the most interesting person in the room. It
1:26:26
Speaker 1: don't matter if President Obama is in there, they're gonna
1:26:28
Speaker 1: be like, we're voted for you, but they ain't. Dylan,
1:26:31
Speaker 1: what you said you saw that? Crazy? As like it's
1:26:33
Speaker 1: always hey, hey Dayla, what what you what you see
1:26:40
Speaker 1: in the White House? Jan talk to me, babe, man.
1:26:47
Speaker 1: Uh it's real. Like Dylan had a really good point,
1:26:49
Speaker 1: like we don't get recognized on a day to day basis.
1:26:53
Speaker 1: Uh So when we're out of public, it's rare that
1:26:56
Speaker 1: somebody's like, oh my god, that's Jawanna's Day's market from
1:26:59
Speaker 1: the Ghost Brother. And so I'm still hit with like
1:27:01
Speaker 1: surprises and I'm really humbled when that does happen, you
1:27:05
Speaker 1: know what I mean. Um, And it's like, I guess
1:27:08
Speaker 1: I appreciate the fact that, like we haven't been catapulted
1:27:11
Speaker 1: into like stardom, and it's almost like we have the
1:27:14
Speaker 1: ability to kind of ease our way into it and
1:27:16
Speaker 1: get you comfortable with underset accepting this celebrity that you have,
1:27:20
Speaker 1: right because like we can't negate the fact that, yes,
1:27:23
Speaker 1: there's a certain celebrity status that comes with what we're doing.
1:27:26
Speaker 1: But this time that we're having allows me to accept
1:27:29
Speaker 1: it and be human, being human and humble about what
1:27:32
Speaker 1: it is, you know what I mean. Like a lot
1:27:34
Speaker 1: of times it can go to somebody's head when they
1:27:36
Speaker 1: get famous. And I think the three of us being
1:27:38
Speaker 1: in television and film in our past and not being
1:27:42
Speaker 1: catapulted in the startom as allowing us to really accept
1:27:45
Speaker 1: that and understand what it means to have that platform
1:27:48
Speaker 1: now markets. I know it went to your head. Look
1:27:50
Speaker 1: at that head big it's growing as it's all that
1:27:53
Speaker 1: cap and can't fit no motive. I told y'all you
1:27:56
Speaker 1: said that the group wasn't gonna be nothing until they
1:27:59
Speaker 1: got David Ruffian. I'm gonna be honest until they until
1:28:02
Speaker 1: they had and they wasn't gonna be non no for
1:28:04
Speaker 1: real though, Um, what I think that was dope about
1:28:07
Speaker 1: this is um as Dayalen and Juwana came up with this.
1:28:11
Speaker 1: It's like it's it's a lane that we're not even in.
1:28:14
Speaker 1: So it automatically keeps you humble because it's nothing that
1:28:17
Speaker 1: you are already good at that you kind of like
1:28:20
Speaker 1: can have an arrogance about. So it allows you to
1:28:23
Speaker 1: like really, um, look at your life in a in
1:28:25
Speaker 1: a very holistic way and and like really see what
1:28:28
Speaker 1: fame is, you know, because even when I look at
1:28:30
Speaker 1: how we can go somewhere and in a in a
1:28:33
Speaker 1: comic con or some type of place and and feel
1:28:36
Speaker 1: a little celebrity, We're like, it's it's just for this,
1:28:39
Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So it allows you to
1:28:41
Speaker 1: kind of even look at every aspect of your life
1:28:43
Speaker 1: and just look at it way more sober than you
1:28:45
Speaker 1: would normally. Um, if it was just something that just
1:28:48
Speaker 1: like it America and just blew all the way up
1:28:50
Speaker 1: and then we can't go outside like we're a boy
1:28:54
Speaker 1: band or something like that. You know, you know what
1:28:56
Speaker 1: I'm saying, like you said, like like Dally said, our
1:28:59
Speaker 1: our demographic is you know, Middle America, and we're three
1:29:02
Speaker 1: brothers in Atlanta. So you know, I'll just tell you
1:29:06
Speaker 1: guys this. You know, that's what I do. I build brands.
1:29:09
Speaker 1: I look at brands and look at I look at people,
1:29:11
Speaker 1: and I determine their success paths. Okay, you know you
1:29:14
Speaker 1: guys should be doing a podcast. Y'all should drift off
1:29:17
Speaker 1: into UFOs if you know they ever thought that, because
1:29:18
Speaker 1: that's that's way doing you too. You know that on
1:29:20
Speaker 1: they're done as lifeline objects. They're waiting on you. Okay,
1:29:23
Speaker 1: and so, but you should have a podcast right now. Okay. Also,
1:29:27
Speaker 1: the COVID has kind of slowed you guys down for
1:29:29
Speaker 1: live events. You know, you guys can put on your
1:29:32
Speaker 1: own Seriously, man, don't worry about black people not knowing
1:29:35
Speaker 1: you that that ain't where the real money at anyway.
1:29:38
Speaker 1: Real money is is in general market. That's what That's
1:29:40
Speaker 1: what has you on TV right. That general market has
1:29:42
Speaker 1: you on TV. You're not on TV one, You're not
1:29:44
Speaker 1: on b T. Go to your market strength. You guys
1:29:47
Speaker 1: are special man, y'all ticklate, You're smart. I know your entrepreneurs.
1:29:51

1:29:53
Speaker 1: your greatness is tied to who you guys are, y'all individually,
1:29:57
Speaker 1: tied to your own success. I know that you will
1:30:00
Speaker 1: be super big one because they're coming out of this
1:30:03
Speaker 1: COVID plan for man, planning for the fall. That's when
1:30:07
Speaker 1: the checks are gonna roll. Plan to know that these
1:30:09
Speaker 1: live events are waiting on you guys. Get your podcast, man,
1:30:12
Speaker 1: Please get y'all the podcast so y'all can tell y'all
1:30:15
Speaker 1: stories to I can own that market, get a big
1:30:17
Speaker 1: contract from Spotify, Spotify, somebody like that. Okay, yes, sir,
1:30:23
Speaker 1: And you know what's funny, was gonna say the same
1:30:26
Speaker 1: thing Markers that we've been putting that into all Kovid.
1:30:29
Speaker 1: We've been doing a weekly zoom called Ghost Brothers and
1:30:31
Speaker 1: Chill that allows the fast to zoom and calls. So
1:30:34
Speaker 1: it's not just a podcast It allows the fast to
1:30:36
Speaker 1: actually in real time to speak with us, see us,
1:30:39
Speaker 1: you know us, getting get involved with them, get close
1:30:42
Speaker 1: with them. And events. Man, we run our Ghost Brothers
1:30:45
Speaker 1: weekend every Halloween weekend in Savannah. We've been doing that
1:30:47
Speaker 1: for the past three or four years. We keep that
1:30:49
Speaker 1: up every year. And yeah, man, were rocketing. Rollers were
1:30:52
Speaker 1: on the same page with good get you merch straight
1:30:56
Speaker 1: ghost dot com. What's you know? What I think? Or
1:31:00
Speaker 1: send me some links so I can promote them and
1:31:03
Speaker 1: put you in my newsletter. But more importantly, man, I'm
1:31:05
Speaker 1: just proud of you guys and just want to let
1:31:06
Speaker 1: you know what I see is special, what I see
1:31:08
Speaker 1: is unique, and uh, sitcoms waiting in your future. And
1:31:12
Speaker 1: whatever I'm telling about you three guys, whatever y'all want
1:31:14
Speaker 1: to do, y'all can do. Y'all young y'all look good
1:31:17
Speaker 1: in Hollywood. Is about the youth, okay, And it's about
1:31:20
Speaker 1: your resume at what you accomplished. I'm just leaving you know.
1:31:22
Speaker 1: You can do those zoom calls, but checks don't come
1:31:24
Speaker 1: with that. Checks come with YouTube, and checks come with podcasts,
1:31:27
Speaker 1: and checks come with radio. So I'm a man, That's
1:31:30
Speaker 1: why you want money making conversation. I try to give
1:31:32
Speaker 1: advice to individuals. If you're gonna spend your time on
1:31:34
Speaker 1: the zoom, spend your time on a podcast. You're gonna
1:31:37
Speaker 1: spend your time on the zoom, build your subscribers on
1:31:41
Speaker 1: your YouTube channel, because that's how you're gonna get paid.
1:31:43
Speaker 1: You're not gonna get paid on Instagram. You're not gonna
1:31:45
Speaker 1: get paid on zoom. Because you guys are gifted. Use
1:31:49
Speaker 1: that gift. Developed that newsletter so you'all can start start
1:31:52
Speaker 1: that momentum. There's a lot of people sitting around waiting
1:31:54
Speaker 1: to be a part of the team. Start building that
1:31:57
Speaker 1: team of people who want to make y'all great. That's
1:32:00
Speaker 1: what I've done all my life. I've done it with
1:32:02
Speaker 1: celebrities too many to name, and I'm special because of that.
1:32:06
Speaker 1: I had to learn that about myself when I stopped
1:32:08
Speaker 1: manager Steve Harvey, I had to put a team around
1:32:10
Speaker 1: me because I was frustrated because things weren't happening. Now
1:32:13
Speaker 1: when hey, because you buy yourself food, you buy yourself,
1:32:16
Speaker 1: you can knock on to a chief success until people
1:32:19
Speaker 1: buy into your dream. That's all I gotta say. Man,
1:32:23

Speaker 1: the UNI universe. And come there and buy some stuff. Brother,
1:32:45
Speaker 1: That's what I do. I bought a building here in Atlanta,
1:32:48
Speaker 1: and I'm about to take over my second floor. Gonna
1:32:51
Speaker 1: need some artwork on that wall. I don't come into
1:32:53
Speaker 1: place on the go in a restaurant asking for food discounts,
1:32:56
Speaker 1: especially when they're owned by black people. All I know
1:32:58

1:35:22
Speaker 1: government program hundreds of millions of dollars. If everybody took
1:35:25
Speaker 1: on the challenge, that that's made it Because if you
1:35:28
Speaker 1: ask people how do you get to where you are?
1:35:30
Speaker 1: I guarantee you most of them didn't do it on
1:35:31
Speaker 1: their own. If if everyone else could take on that challenge,
1:35:34
Speaker 1: just think about what kind of city we can have
1:35:35
Speaker 1: in Atlanta. It's something we can scale or something we
1:35:37
Speaker 1: can all do and lean into. The Cafe Mocha Swag

1:36:11

Speaker 1: out my Cougars or what I call the last second
1:37:48
Speaker 1: Jalen Sugs type shot. Oh Man, because sports has always
1:37:56
Speaker 1: played I'm not an athlete, and I don't know a
1:37:58
Speaker 1: few histories standards from being an athlete, but you know,
1:38:01
Speaker 1: sports is what this this This isn't such a strong
1:38:05
Speaker 1: analogy in professionalism and corporate speak and so many different
1:38:11
Speaker 1: Why does sports align itself so well when you're talking
1:38:15
Speaker 1: about organizations, when you're talking about motivation, when you're talking
1:38:18
Speaker 1: about teamwork. How does sports play such a major role
1:38:21
Speaker 1: like that? Paul, Yeah, that's a great one. And look,
1:38:24
Speaker 1: I think on the surface everybody tapping into this conversation
1:38:28
Speaker 1: can understand that what you look for in all put
1:38:31
Speaker 1: it in the performance bucket. Whether you're performing on the
1:38:34
Speaker 1: court or the field or in the boardroom, you're looking
1:38:37
Speaker 1: for a lot of the same traits and characteristics. So
1:38:41
Speaker 1: you want people that have that leveled up work ethic, positivity, coachability,
1:38:47
Speaker 1: that sense of passion, and they ultimately need to have
1:38:52
Speaker 1: a deeper purpose. In other words, do they believe deeply
1:38:56
Speaker 1: in the game that they're playing, regardless of what walk
1:39:00
Speaker 1: of life. When your why is strong enough, what I
1:39:03
Speaker 1: have discovered is you'll figure out the how because inevitably
1:39:07
Speaker 1: life and business and sports. If it was all blue
1:39:10
Speaker 1: skies and it would be easy. But you and I
1:39:13
Speaker 1: both know, and we're coming off one of the more
1:39:15
Speaker 1: tumultuous years that, at least personally I've seen. I'm sure
1:39:18
Speaker 1: a lot of folks listening have experienced that being and
1:39:21
Speaker 1: so when you think about that adversity, it always strikes
1:39:26
Speaker 1: it's inevitable. We don't know when, we don't know how big.
1:39:29
Speaker 1: And my argument for purpose is that it is the
1:39:32
Speaker 1: fuel of courage, purposes, the fuel of resilience. And here's
1:39:38
Speaker 1: how I boil it down. Purpose is going to keep
1:39:41
Speaker 1: you on the treadmill of life, especially on the days
1:39:45
Speaker 1: you want to get off. And that's really what I
1:39:48
Speaker 1: think can apply whether it's sports, whether it's business or
1:39:52
Speaker 1: zoom out, and whether it's about life. And that's essentially
1:39:57
Speaker 1: how I approached the power of playing offense. It's universally applicable.
1:40:01
Speaker 1: You know. They're really interesting thing about it is that
1:40:04
Speaker 1: some people get it right away, and I admire that,
1:40:07
Speaker 1: you know, and I had. I wasn't into my forties
1:40:10
Speaker 1: that I really trusted myself. I think purpose and trust
1:40:13
Speaker 1: is tied together. I believe so, and uh and so.
1:40:17
Speaker 1: And why is that? You know, because you know, you
1:40:21
Speaker 1: see talented people that have to be coached up, you
1:40:23
Speaker 1: that were coached up, you know, have to be motivated
1:40:25
Speaker 1: because sometimes they don't believe that the gifts that God
1:40:28
Speaker 1: have given them, or that the innate talents that have
1:40:31
Speaker 1: made them special or shouldn't be shared on the court,
1:40:35
Speaker 1: shouldn't be shared at the level that they feel they
1:40:37
Speaker 1: can even expect of themselves. And you always hit the
1:40:40
Speaker 1: story that Michael Jordan didn't play vosity, you know, because
1:40:43
Speaker 1: he was cut. So it was that because he didn't
1:40:46
Speaker 1: realize how great he could be, or he didn't realize
1:40:49
Speaker 1: the talent he had at that moment. So when we're
1:40:51
Speaker 1: talking about purpose, let's dive in a little bit deeper.
1:40:54
Speaker 1: Not so much the book the book has. The book
1:40:56
Speaker 1: is like, of course, in understanding the layers of how
1:41:00
Speaker 1: to find it within you. That's what I loved about
1:41:02
Speaker 1: your book. It's not a book, because I read a
1:41:05
Speaker 1: lot of books, Paul, they just tell you do this,
1:41:08
Speaker 1: do this to this. But your book tells you that,
1:41:10
Speaker 1: but also tells you gives you steps on the look
1:41:13
Speaker 1: inside you and define your mission. And that's why I
1:41:16
Speaker 1: talk about telling people write your own story, and that's
1:41:19
Speaker 1: what you're asking people to do with your book. Correct, Yes,
1:41:23
Speaker 1: And I love where you're bringing us about not only
1:41:26
Speaker 1: knowing who you are, but really, in a nutshell, that's leadership.
1:41:29
Speaker 1: See the pieces Rashaan. Most books, when they're inspired from
1:41:34
Speaker 1: the right place, sometimes it comes from pain, right and
1:41:38
Speaker 1: my pain was this is the playbook that I never had.
1:41:42
Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is I was trained
1:41:44
Speaker 1: to be a manager, and I was trained to achieve results.
1:41:48
Speaker 1: I was training to gain success, but nobody gave me
1:41:52
Speaker 1: the playbook for significance. Nobody gave me that playbook of what.
1:41:56
Speaker 1: Now I look at his leadership, which is before we
1:41:59
Speaker 1: lead up ers, we must first lead ourselves. Where's that
1:42:03
Speaker 1: playbook in the world? And that's that inward look, that's
1:42:07
Speaker 1: that look in the mirror, that's that accountability to self.
1:42:09
Speaker 1: Because if we're not doing a great job of leading ourselves,
1:42:12
Speaker 1: why are we trying to lead others and teens and
1:42:14
Speaker 1: cultures and organizations? And that's really where this was, so
1:42:18
Speaker 1: that that's ultimately you know, kind of what inspired it.
1:42:21
Speaker 1: But also I spoke about the pain rashan and one
1:42:23
Speaker 1: of those things is this is a harsh reality. But
1:42:27
Speaker 1: six out of ten leaders in Fortune one thousand companies quote,
1:42:32
Speaker 1: have never received a single day of leadership training. That's
1:42:38
Speaker 1: a scary statistic because what that leads to is, and
1:42:42
Speaker 1: this is very public information, seven out of ten working
1:42:45
Speaker 1: folks in the world are disengaged. They don't like what
1:42:49
Speaker 1: they do, who they do for where they do it. So,
1:42:51
Speaker 1: you know, you kind of understand people's paining those challenges.
1:42:54
Speaker 1: So I'm on a mission to flip that on its
1:42:56
Speaker 1: head because the working world and just the world in
1:42:59
Speaker 1: general I am aching is I want folks like you
1:43:01
Speaker 1: and I and everybody listening in to be inspired to
1:43:05
Speaker 1: step into each day to make a contribution and an
1:43:09
Speaker 1: impact that matters to them. And then on the back end,
1:43:12
Speaker 1: I want them to be fulfilled. And here's where your
1:43:14
Speaker 1: story aligned so well with mine. I know that part
1:43:17
Speaker 1: of your piece is leading with your gifts. Imagine if
1:43:21
Speaker 1: every day you had an opportunity to exercise your gifts,
1:43:27
Speaker 1: your talents, your passions. That's the world that I imagine.
1:43:32
Speaker 1: And that's not only why I wrote the book, but
1:43:34
Speaker 1: that's how I that's the spirit that I attack each
1:43:36
Speaker 1: day with. You know, here's an interesting thing. I my
1:43:39
Speaker 1: degrees in mathematics and minor and sociology. Sociology really changed
1:43:43
Speaker 1: my life on how I look at people. It really
1:43:46
Speaker 1: helps me shape my decisions today. Now, I my career
1:43:50
Speaker 1: launched on stand up comedy. Stand up comedy, and so
1:43:54
Speaker 1: when you start talking about that leadership, you know, that's
1:43:56
Speaker 1: the natural part of me because I always figured if
1:43:58
Speaker 1: I was in the room over of people, if I
1:44:00
Speaker 1: got seventy people to laugh, then I was winning. You know,
1:44:03
Speaker 1: I was gonna I wouldn't walk off because you're not
1:44:05
Speaker 1: gonna get everybody. You know that. And so you know
1:44:07
Speaker 1: the conversation we're having here. You have small work environments
1:44:10
Speaker 1: as leadership, and then you have a larger small corporation
1:44:13
Speaker 1: than large corporations. Is that culture that we're talking about,
1:44:17
Speaker 1: that leadership culture. That's when you're saying, how do if
1:44:20
Speaker 1: leaders aren't trained to be leaders, then they will fail
1:44:23
Speaker 1: as the as the as the crowd gets bigger, they
1:44:26
Speaker 1: can't hear you. You know, it's like everybody hear your conversation,
1:44:29
Speaker 1: are you talking to the people in the back? I
1:44:31
Speaker 1: remember Paul that was with Stephen and was talking about
1:44:35
Speaker 1: playing big arenas like three thousand and seven thousand and
1:44:38
Speaker 1: twenty thousand seat arenas. That's a lot of people to control.
1:44:42
Speaker 1: And whenever we would go out on stage, we will
1:44:44
Speaker 1: always make sure we pointed to the rear of the
1:44:46
Speaker 1: arena just to let the people know we see you.
1:44:50
Speaker 1: And that's what leadership is all about. Acknowledging that you
1:44:53
Speaker 1: see everybody, even if you don't really see them, but
1:44:57
Speaker 1: you acknowledge that they're there. And that where leadership falls
1:45:01
Speaker 1: apart by not acknowledging everybody and giving them a sense
1:45:05
Speaker 1: of purpose and also acknowledging they have a gift that
1:45:08
Speaker 1: can be utilized significantly by this company or the role
1:45:12
Speaker 1: that you play. Am I on the same page with
1:45:14
Speaker 1: your book. Literally, the third killer Brishan is called salute
1:45:19
Speaker 1: the long snapper. Now you don't need to be a
1:45:22
Speaker 1: sports fan to get this analogy. I'll just break it
1:45:24
Speaker 1: down in five seconds. The long snapper is the guy
1:45:27
Speaker 1: that hikes the ball to the punter. They are the
1:45:29
Speaker 1: person in life that if they do things right, they'll
1:45:34
Speaker 1: never hear a word, but they do one thing wrong
1:45:38
Speaker 1: and they'll never hear the end of it. And the
1:45:41
Speaker 1: reality is we've all been a long snapper at some
1:45:44
Speaker 1: point in our life. And so my mission in my
1:45:48
Speaker 1: message here is we need to shine a light on
1:45:51
Speaker 1: those long snappers because there's way more long snappers in
1:45:54
Speaker 1: the world then there are star quarterbacks. But in business
1:45:58
Speaker 1: and in a lot of walks, all we do is
1:46:01
Speaker 1: praise the quarterback. We only praise the leader when you
1:46:05
Speaker 1: and I both know that it takes a village and
1:46:08
Speaker 1: until everybody long snappers included, they feel like they genuinely,
1:46:12
Speaker 1: genuinely have a seat at the table, that's when they
1:46:15
Speaker 1: know they matter. That's when they're gonna give their all
1:46:19
Speaker 1: to the cause because they actually feel recognized, valued, seeing heard. So, yes,
1:46:26
Speaker 1: you and I are hindred spirits in that way. Well
1:46:30
Speaker 1: that's important because when you're trying to, you know, to
1:46:34
Speaker 1: write a book, a book as good as I'm written
1:46:37
Speaker 1: a book. Yet people can tell them I need to
1:46:39
Speaker 1: write a book. And so so when I run across
1:46:41
Speaker 1: a book like this and talks about leadership, talks about trust,
1:46:44
Speaker 1: it talks about being able to show your role and
1:46:47
Speaker 1: something you said earlier bout what do you the your
1:46:51
Speaker 1: level of significance? Because I always talk to people about
1:46:53
Speaker 1: significance because that's that puts a statement of your value.
1:46:58
Speaker 1: Because you know, people can say, you know lebrod Jays
1:47:00
Speaker 1: getting a lot of money, well because he stated his significance. Okay,
1:47:04
Speaker 1: so so because he states significance, that can apply to you.
1:47:09
Speaker 1: If you in the mail room, if you're a significant
1:47:12
Speaker 1: person in the mail room, then guess what, They're gonna
1:47:14
Speaker 1: move you out of the mail room because they see
1:47:16
Speaker 1: value in you. Talk about how people and generally don't
1:47:21
Speaker 1: understand that that's the key. Uh. I would tell a
1:47:24
Speaker 1: story about when I was intern, Like, actually, I work
1:47:28
Speaker 1: in the college intern at IBM, and they had told me,
1:47:31
Speaker 1: Paul that they only kept people there for one semester
1:47:34
Speaker 1: and that was it. Well, I stayed there for two
1:47:36
Speaker 1: and a half years because I showed them that you
1:47:39
Speaker 1: couldn't let me go because I had value to the
1:47:42
Speaker 1: employees that you hired. There were full times and so
1:47:46
Speaker 1: I played that game out because I trusted my natural instinct.
1:47:49
Speaker 1: Now you're saying the same thing is that you wouldn't
1:47:52
Speaker 1: You weren't in the sports world for fifteen years successfully
1:47:55
Speaker 1: because they liked you. That can get you in the door.
1:47:58
Speaker 1: But you understood they were to open up lanes of
1:48:01
Speaker 1: significance that people value. That's why you retained that high
1:48:05
Speaker 1: level of success. Can you break it down from our
1:48:07
Speaker 1: viewers and listeners, Dent And the way that I will
1:48:11
Speaker 1: break it down is this, And to your point, Rishan
1:48:13
Speaker 1: is super important here. Yes, the success, but ultimately, especially
1:48:19
Speaker 1: in the world I was in, you had to perform
1:48:22
Speaker 1: or there was no seat at the table. And so
1:48:24
Speaker 1: I understood that track record and street credit in all
1:48:28
Speaker 1: these different things matter. But let me zoom out for
1:48:31
Speaker 1: a second and then I'm gonna come back to success
1:48:32
Speaker 1: and significance. I think at a larger societal level, one
1:48:36
Speaker 1: of the challenges is we, especially here in the United States,
1:48:40
Speaker 1: we're raised in a way where we look at your trophies,
1:48:45
Speaker 1: we look at the brands that you represent or that
1:48:48
Speaker 1: you associate with. We're always chasing success. And that's the
1:48:53
Speaker 1: first mountain of life. And I did not know that
1:48:55
Speaker 1: there was the second mountain coming, which is the one
1:48:57
Speaker 1: about significance. But let me come back to the first
1:49:00
Speaker 1: of success. So you're climbing, and you're climbing and the
1:49:03
Speaker 1: better you are, the better your LinkedIn profile looks. You
1:49:06
Speaker 1: just keep climbing and then inevitably what I do because
1:49:10
Speaker 1: like you Roshan on my podcast, I'm interviewing some of
1:49:13
Speaker 1: the most successful people in the world, and you know what,
1:49:16
Speaker 1: one of the common things that I hear is, as
1:49:18
Speaker 1: I'm sure you've heard, I get to the top of
1:49:21
Speaker 1: the mountain and I look around and I asked myself,
1:49:25
Speaker 1: is this it? Like I did all that work, I
1:49:28
Speaker 1: want all these trophies, I got the ultimate level of success,
1:49:32
Speaker 1: and on the inside, I don't feel fulfilled. The goal
1:49:35
Speaker 1: post keep moving further away. I get one promotion, I
1:49:39
Speaker 1: just want the next. I get one pay raise, I
1:49:41
Speaker 1: just want more, and it's a game of more and
1:49:44
Speaker 1: more and you never get there. That's the first mountain
1:49:47
Speaker 1: of life, which is success. What I graduated too because
1:49:51
Speaker 1: of some hard times, because I wasn't feeling alive on
1:49:55
Speaker 1: the inside. Significance is the second mountain, because if success
1:50:00
Speaker 1: is about self, significance is about serving others. I didn't
1:50:04
Speaker 1: know that was important when I was younger. I was
1:50:07
Speaker 1: told it, but my ego got in the way. So
1:50:10
Speaker 1: now I step into the world of service, of contribution,
1:50:14
Speaker 1: of impact of leaving it better than I found it,
1:50:17
Speaker 1: whether that means of people or place. And I'll tell
1:50:22
Speaker 1: you Rashan. Ever, since I started to focus on significance
1:50:25
Speaker 1: over success, that's when my life took off. And here's
1:50:29
Speaker 1: the last piece for you. I've met many people that
1:50:33
Speaker 1: have success but don't feel significance. However, I have never
1:50:39
Speaker 1: met a single one person that has achieved significance and
1:50:44
Speaker 1: it's not successful. It's interesting how that works out. We know,
1:50:48
Speaker 1: it's really it's really great conversation we happen because you know,
1:50:52
Speaker 1: I can share so many examples. And when my dominant
1:50:55
Speaker 1: examples was when I was managing Steve Harvey. Despite all
1:50:58
Speaker 1: my success, I was confused. And confusion can block your
1:51:02
Speaker 1: significance because you have to have a clear path to
1:51:06
Speaker 1: what you're trying to achieve in life. You know, I
1:51:08
Speaker 1: don't care about the m A is, the image awards,
1:51:10
Speaker 1: the number one box office success, the number one books,
1:51:13
Speaker 1: family few being, number one talk shows being launched. I
1:51:17
Speaker 1: I lost my significance. I lost my I was confused
1:51:20
Speaker 1: as to where I wanted to go, you know, the
1:51:22
Speaker 1: next five or ten years, because in two thousand, when
1:51:25
Speaker 1: I started to manage I was clearly had a path
1:51:27
Speaker 1: of what I wanted to do with him. He had
1:51:29
Speaker 1: clearly a path what he wanted to do with me.
1:51:32
Speaker 1: We wanted to change the game. We wanted to do
1:51:34
Speaker 1: talk shows, we want to do game shows. We wanted
1:51:36
Speaker 1: to just be a dominant force. But along the way,
1:51:40
Speaker 1: you know, you, You, You, You, You start realizing is
1:51:42
Speaker 1: that the same dream for you now? And that's when
1:51:46
Speaker 1: the confusion said in for me, and that you want
1:51:48
Speaker 1: to let people know that when you start talking about
1:51:51
Speaker 1: finding your significance, finding your why, it cannot be tied
1:51:55
Speaker 1: to confusion. If you're confused by anything you're trying to
1:51:57
Speaker 1: do or achieve, you will not achieve to sgnificance. And
1:52:00
Speaker 1: I wanted to And one of the reasons I wanted
1:52:02
Speaker 1: to talk to you today I wanted to be honest
1:52:04
Speaker 1: because I felt after reading your book, I had to
1:52:07
Speaker 1: be honest to be able to tell people why this
1:52:08
Speaker 1: book is relatable to me and what it's readable. Because
1:52:11
Speaker 1: of the fact that you can see people label successful,
1:52:16
Speaker 1: label got everything you want, the cards, and they've got
1:52:19
Speaker 1: all they amplified on social media, But what is their
1:52:23
Speaker 1: point of view? I did not have it, Poul. I
1:52:26
Speaker 1: did not have it, and reading your book helped refocus
1:52:30
Speaker 1: me and realized I had it. I just didn't. I
1:52:33
Speaker 1: just didn't drill down and just start saying you can't
1:52:36
Speaker 1: have this. This is not it, This is not it,
1:52:38
Speaker 1: this is not it. This is you. And that's what
1:52:40
Speaker 1: your book enabled me to say. Now on this call,
1:52:43
Speaker 1: is that my leading, my gifts. That's ro Sean McDonald
1:52:47
Speaker 1: and everything that I've done in building to this moment,
1:52:50
Speaker 1: money making conversations, that's what Sean McDonald. These are brands
1:52:53
Speaker 1: that have been built out out of what I want
1:52:55
Speaker 1: to talk about. And that's what this book is about.
1:52:58
Speaker 1: Is when I tell people, you know, up reading other
1:53:00
Speaker 1: people's success stores and start writing your own. And that's
1:53:03
Speaker 1: what your book is telling everybody. Paul talk to us, bingo, Yeah,
1:53:08
Speaker 1: you just nailed it. That's that's essentially when I could say,
1:53:12
Speaker 1: are you living and leading with purpose? Which that's an
1:53:15
Speaker 1: honest question for us to ask ourselves and where whether
1:53:18
Speaker 1: it's this playbook or whether it's just the way that
1:53:21
Speaker 1: you enter each day, think of it from this framework.
1:53:24
Speaker 1: I call this your identity model, right, and everybody listening
1:53:28
Speaker 1: to this has an identity and my challenges are we
1:53:32
Speaker 1: being authentic to our identity. So let me break this down.
1:53:38
Speaker 1: The inner layer of your identity is your purpose. Your
1:53:42
Speaker 1: purpose is your why. The next layer are your core values,
1:53:48
Speaker 1: and your values are your who. So if the innermost
1:53:52
Speaker 1: layers of your identity is a combination of your why
1:53:56
Speaker 1: and your who, what that then does they inform your
1:54:00
Speaker 1: leaf system, how you make decisions, your daily behaviors, and
1:54:05
Speaker 1: last but not least, your actions. So this outermost layer
1:54:09
Speaker 1: is how you show up every day. The question is
1:54:13
Speaker 1: your outer layers connected to the inner layers? In other words,
1:54:17
Speaker 1: are you showing up in a way that's aligned and
1:54:21
Speaker 1: connected to who you are at your core? Prior to
1:54:25
Speaker 1: finding my purpose, the answer was heck no, absolutely not, Rashan,
1:54:29
Speaker 1: I was not I was misaligned, I was not connected.
1:54:33
Speaker 1: I lacked some sense of authenticity because I was over
1:54:36
Speaker 1: chasing success. But now I'm on this second mountain of
1:54:40
Speaker 1: life called significance, and that's where I started to align
1:54:44
Speaker 1: who I am on my best day and I just
1:54:47
Speaker 1: rinse and repeat every single day, but it means nothing
1:54:51
Speaker 1: unless I show up through my actions, behaviors, and decisions.
1:54:55
Speaker 1: That's how you live and lead with purpose, and it's
1:54:58
Speaker 1: something that I'm so grateful that I realized that lesson
1:55:01
Speaker 1: over the course of my life is that's literally what
1:55:03
Speaker 1: I do for a living. My calling is to pay
1:55:06
Speaker 1: this gift forward because I want people to experience the
1:55:10
Speaker 1: same transformation that I had. It's amazing. I'm talking to
1:55:13
Speaker 1: Paul's abstained and he's an expert in leadership and organization
1:55:17
Speaker 1: of culture. But of the last fifteen years he's been
1:55:19
Speaker 1: a success. But he defined and redefined himself when he
1:55:22
Speaker 1: discovered his why. And here's the funny thing about you know,
1:55:25
Speaker 1: if you if you would have been watching me read
1:55:27
Speaker 1: this book, you know I'm very animated. And so it's
1:55:31
Speaker 1: two phrases I always use. Paul always tell people, don't
1:55:34
Speaker 1: be afraid to fire people because you're stopping them from
1:55:36
Speaker 1: living the dream they want to live. Okay, remember that phone. Okay.
1:55:40
Speaker 1: And then I always tell people, you know, because a
1:55:42
Speaker 1: lot of people, you know, racism does exist. But I
1:55:45
Speaker 1: always tell people, at least give yourself a shot. And
1:55:47
Speaker 1: I always tell people that if the the way you
1:55:49
Speaker 1: give yourself a shot is decisions are always made looking
1:55:53
Speaker 1: by a person looking left, looking right, and in front.
1:55:56
Speaker 1: Nobody turns around and makes a decision. Okay, if you
1:56:00
Speaker 1: and intentionally standing behind somebody, or you're standing behind somebody
1:56:03
Speaker 1: while they're making a decision. They're not gonna pick you,
1:56:06
Speaker 1: So understand you. You understand why you're there. You may
1:56:09
Speaker 1: want to get you might need to get fired or
1:56:11
Speaker 1: fighting the job now and reading your book, this line
1:56:13
Speaker 1: really made me dance. It says, is in the is
1:56:16
Speaker 1: in the transformation of disengaged to inspire. Look to your left,
1:56:21
Speaker 1: look to your right. Seven out of ten people don't
1:56:24
Speaker 1: want to be here. They'd rather be working somewhere else
1:56:27
Speaker 1: for someone else. That let me knew that was perfectly
1:56:32
Speaker 1: aligned because you took two of my concepts and send
1:56:36
Speaker 1: it in one sentence. I'll tell people look to the left,
1:56:38
Speaker 1: look to the right, looking front. If you're not in
1:56:40
Speaker 1: that person's visual site of decision maker, you're not part
1:56:43
Speaker 1: of that culture. And that's what you're talking about. If
1:56:46
Speaker 1: the person is at your state of employment, they're not
1:56:49
Speaker 1: working up to your expectations, fired them, let them go
1:56:52
Speaker 1: so they can go do the job that they really
1:56:54
Speaker 1: want to do. But you need to push them and
1:56:56
Speaker 1: enable them doing by disenfranchising them from this opportunity that
1:56:59
Speaker 1: they don't want to be it. And that's what you're saying,
1:57:01
Speaker 1: tell us the significance of that statement right there in
1:57:04
Speaker 1: your book, because it was transformatable for me, because it
1:57:08
Speaker 1: made me allign myself with saying stay focused with Sean,
1:57:11
Speaker 1: you're doing the right things, because that's what he's saying
1:57:14
Speaker 1: in his book, Stay focused and align yourself with people
1:57:17
Speaker 1: who follow the same path. Yeah. I think it's not
1:57:21
Speaker 1: only aligning yourself with people that that connect you in
1:57:25
Speaker 1: terms of your core spirit, but I also think in
1:57:29
Speaker 1: a very practical way. I'll actually let the audience in
1:57:32
Speaker 1: on a little bit of a backstory. So this is
1:57:33
Speaker 1: what led to that Jerry McGuire moment when I took
1:57:36
Speaker 1: that leap of faith away from sports, which is a
1:57:38
Speaker 1: decision I never thought I would make. But it was
1:57:41
Speaker 1: my executive coach who and you called it out earlier
1:57:43
Speaker 1: with Sean from the University in Michigan, So go Blue.
1:57:47
Speaker 1: My executive NBA coach. Her name is Suanne so when
1:57:50
Speaker 1: and I had a combo when I was head of
1:57:52
Speaker 1: sales and business development for the San Francisco forty niners,
1:57:55
Speaker 1: and literally this was it. She said, Paul, I know
1:57:58
Speaker 1: what you do, what do you love about it? What
1:58:02
Speaker 1: do you hate about it? And what's in the middle,
1:58:04
Speaker 1: meaning what do you tolerate? So love, hate, tolerate, and
1:58:07
Speaker 1: I want everybody to ask yourself those three questions about
1:58:09
Speaker 1: what it is that you do. And then she said, okay,
1:58:13
Speaker 1: go deeper on that love bucket. And I said, all right,
1:58:15
Speaker 1: so you Anne, I love being a coach just like you.
1:58:18
Speaker 1: I love the people side, the culture side of business.
1:58:22
Speaker 1: I love investing in relationships. And she just said, awesome,
1:58:25
Speaker 1: on a good day, what percentage of your time are
1:58:28
Speaker 1: you doing that? And I started to sing down in
1:58:32
Speaker 1: my chair because I knew the answer was a little ugly. Literally,
1:58:34
Speaker 1: I was in strategy meeting after meeting sometimes meetings talk
1:58:37
Speaker 1: about meetings and all this noise. But I wasn't doing
1:58:41
Speaker 1: what I love to do. I was working in an
1:58:43
Speaker 1: industry that I loved, but the job I fell out
1:58:46
Speaker 1: of love with it. And here's the reality, and here's
1:58:49
Speaker 1: the takeaway for everybody listening in. From that point forward,
1:58:53
Speaker 1: I started to say, what I do on a day
1:58:56
Speaker 1: to day, every activity of each day, it either gives
1:58:59
Speaker 1: me energy or it depletes me of my energy. There's
1:59:03
Speaker 1: no in between. Something gives you fuel or it depletes
1:59:07
Speaker 1: you of your fuel. So you need to be honest
1:59:09
Speaker 1: with yourself, and not only in the mirror, but if
1:59:12
Speaker 1: you're in a leadership position, how do the people around
1:59:15
Speaker 1: you feel? And so when I said that seven out
1:59:18
Speaker 1: of ten people being disengaged, and you just shined a
1:59:20
Speaker 1: light on that statistic, Rashan, I'm basically saying that most
1:59:25
Speaker 1: of us do things every day that deplete us of
1:59:28
Speaker 1: our fuel. We are disengaged. It's not tied to our purpose.
1:59:33
Speaker 1: It's paycheck over purpose. And so how can we get
1:59:37
Speaker 1: in tune with who we are what energizes us? Because
1:59:40
Speaker 1: that's the key. What are you curious about? What gives
1:59:43
Speaker 1: you energy that will help you find your passion, that
1:59:46
Speaker 1: will help you find your purpose. But don't worry about
1:59:48
Speaker 1: the purpose thing that's too big. On step one, that
1:59:50
Speaker 1: step five in the game. Step one is what are
1:59:52
Speaker 1: you curious about? What gives you energy? And there's hints
1:59:56
Speaker 1: in there about your passion. That's where I would start,
1:59:59
Speaker 1: you know, And it's absolutely true. And the one thing
2:00:02
Speaker 1: that really launched me. I was doing an interview and
2:00:07
Speaker 1: that we were talking about age. Were talking about so
2:00:10
Speaker 1: many people just stop their dreams when they get fifty
2:00:13
Speaker 1: or in the sixties, seventy they think they can't do
2:00:16
Speaker 1: anything beyond that. And as we wrap talk to about
2:00:21
Speaker 1: audience about not letting age diminished your significance, diminishing your
2:00:28
Speaker 1: purpose and stopping you from living your dreams. Yeah, that's
2:00:32
Speaker 1: a great one. And and look, I think where we
2:00:35
Speaker 1: can all align is even if the word conversation for
2:00:39
Speaker 1: some you know, some people find themselves in a career,
2:00:41
Speaker 1: others in a job, so we're not all in the
2:00:43
Speaker 1: same spot there. But here's where I think we can
2:00:45
Speaker 1: align and find common ground relationships. And in this case,
2:00:50
Speaker 1: I would say the way that I boil it down
2:00:52
Speaker 1: is every day you're with the wrong person is the
2:00:57
Speaker 1: day that you're not with the right person. Right. So, like,
2:01:01
Speaker 1: if you think of life in that sense, is it
2:01:04
Speaker 1: ever too late to meet the one? Is it ever
2:01:08
Speaker 1: too late to transition from job to career to calling
2:01:13
Speaker 1: It's never too late. Age has nothing to do with it.
2:01:17
Speaker 1: I would argue that even if I could fast forward
2:01:20
Speaker 1: decades ahead in my life, if I was not feeling
2:01:22
Speaker 1: significance or purpose, it would still be the greatest gift
2:01:26
Speaker 1: that I had ever received. Ages the number, the mission is,
2:01:30
Speaker 1: the goal is you want to feel alive and every
2:01:34
Speaker 1: day you don't feel alive, You're only getting in your
2:01:37
Speaker 1: own way. So let's lock arms, let's need it the
2:01:39
Speaker 1: fifty as I say, and let's feel alive. You know that,
2:01:43
Speaker 1: that the infamous fifty yard line. You know you can need,
2:01:46
Speaker 1: you know, And that's why I go back to sports man.
2:01:49
Speaker 1: I you know, I I um. I've never played professional sports,
2:01:54
Speaker 1: nor collegiate or high school, but for sports, tend to
2:01:57
Speaker 1: people with your female male in age groups. In your
2:02:02
Speaker 1: role and being a guy who's who's walked in stadium
2:02:05
Speaker 1: sold out, what is the most just maybe a question
2:02:08
Speaker 1: that the question that was in your book, just a
2:02:10
Speaker 1: question about a person who's lived at that glorified world
2:02:13
Speaker 1: of seeing people, fans fandom. What is your biggest takeaway
2:02:18
Speaker 1: the fans can take away while watching sports that they
2:02:21
Speaker 1: can give to their personal life and professional life. Yeah,
2:02:27
Speaker 1: so let's say here in a pack stadium and other
2:02:32
Speaker 1: people may look at seventy thousand folks and see seventy
2:02:36
Speaker 1: thousand fans my perspective, and this is a great life lesson.
2:02:40
Speaker 1: Every seat has a story. So when I look out
2:02:44
Speaker 1: at seventy thou people, I see seventy thousand stories that
2:02:48
Speaker 1: are in the making. So I see somebody that just
2:02:51
Speaker 1: came back from serving overseas. I see somebody that just
2:02:54
Speaker 1: battled cancer and is now in remission and top of
2:02:57
Speaker 1: their bucket list. Let me go watch my favorite team play.
2:03:00
Speaker 1: I see a mother, father, daughter, son, a family afford
2:03:05
Speaker 1: creating a lifelong memory that they just don't realize that
2:03:08
Speaker 1: the next three hours is about to deliver. That's how
2:03:11
Speaker 1: I see a stadium. That's how I see the world,
2:03:14
Speaker 1: and that's how I see people. It's about humanity and
2:03:18
Speaker 1: at the end of the day, we all have a story.
2:03:20
Speaker 1: And just remember, whether it's a company or even inside
2:03:23
Speaker 1: your house, every seat has a story. The power of
2:03:27
Speaker 1: planned offense. Paul Epstein, I want to thank you for
