Speaker 1: really appreciate everybody who listens to the show. I guess
• 0:35
Speaker 1: I want to call him a longtime friend. It was
• 0:38
Speaker 1: at the Black Media Awards we were sitting at the
• 0:40
Speaker 1: same table and we decided to get together on this
• 0:44
Speaker 1: radio show to talk talk in public and then it's
• 0:47
Speaker 1: important And my guess is Alfred A. Edman Jr. He's
• 0:50
Speaker 1: widely recognized for his expertise on business and economic trends, entrepreneurship,
• 0:55
Speaker 1: personal finance, leadership, development and mentorship. A lot of people
• 0:58
Speaker 1: ask me about mentorship all the time on this show.
• 1:01
Speaker 1: He appears regularly as an expert commentator on national television,
• 1:04
Speaker 1: radio shows, streaming and podcast program He's an award winning
• 1:08
Speaker 1: multimedia journalist. When I was with him, he got an award.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: He's a senior vice president Editor at Large at Black Enterprise,
• 1:14
Speaker 1: responsible for providing branding, marketing, content leadership as a member
• 1:19
Speaker 1: of the multimedia company's senior management TERAM team. Please work
• 1:22
Speaker 1: with the money, make conversation MASTERCLIVEE Afford Edmund Junior.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: How you doing, sir, Hey man, It's good to be
• 1:30
Speaker 3: with you again. I'm doing great effort.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: You know when I when I think about you, you know,
• 1:36
Speaker 1: the word legend pops up because you when you win,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: because of the fact that you you've covered so much
• 1:41
Speaker 1: ground and you've seen this game of you know, because
• 1:46
Speaker 1: it was really interesting. Because I used to say Black
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Enterprise Magazine. Now just say Black Enterprise. That is am
• 1:53
Speaker 1: I right? And assuming that the landscape has changed that
• 1:55
Speaker 1: way because I said it used to be saying Black
• 1:57
  Speaker 1: Enterprise magazine. Correct.
• 1:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, you're absolutely right with Seawan. I mean, we technically
• 2:02
Speaker 3: haven't been a at least not a printed magazine since
• 2:07
Speaker 3: since like twenty sixteen, but the Black Enterprise magazine brand
• 2:11
Speaker 3: is so strong that people still think of us as
• 2:14
Speaker 3: a magazine, even though we are now a fully digital,
• 2:18
Speaker 3: live and virtual events company and have been for some time.
• 2:22
Speaker 3: But you know, the brand that Argue late founder and
• 2:27
Speaker 3: the visionary Earl Grade Senior built is so strong that
• 2:31
Speaker 3: people still think that they see a Black Enterprise magazine
• 2:35
Speaker 3: on the newsstands and I say, no, you actually haven't.
• 2:37
Speaker 3: It just feels that way, but you know, we'll take it.
• 2:40
Speaker 3: It's all love. It's all love.
• 2:41
Speaker 1: It is because you know, when I, when I was
• 2:43
Speaker 1: just putting together the you know so content kept I
• 2:46
Speaker 1: kept wanting to say Black Enterprise magazine, magazine magazine. I
• 2:50
Speaker 1: said no, no, no, no, because in our go online
• 2:53
Speaker 1: that research tremendous articles that are especially the support of
• 2:57
Speaker 1: what you guys do with small businesses an NBA. How
• 3:00
Speaker 1: important is that to the lifeline or the blood line
• 3:04
  Speaker 1: of Black enterprise.
• 3:07
Speaker 3: I mean, it's why we exist. And let me just
• 3:09
Speaker 3: say for your audience, we answer to both. There's such
• 3:12
Speaker 3: thing as a digital magazine, so we answer to Black
• 3:14
Speaker 3: Enterprise of Black Enterprise magazine. But the success of black
• 3:18
Speaker 3: people in general and black business owners and entrepreneurs in
• 3:23
Speaker 3: particular is the life blood of Black enterprise. Black businesses
• 3:27
Speaker 3: aren't growing, Black people aren't making more money. Our tagline
• 3:32
Speaker 3: is wealth or life. We exist so that Black people
• 3:36
Speaker 3: can build better businesses, bigger businesses, more profitable businesses, have
• 3:41
Speaker 3: more successful careers, make more money that way, make more
• 3:44
Speaker 3: money as investors and money managers, or whatever way you
• 3:47
Speaker 3: want to take, and you're probably going to have to
• 3:49
Speaker 3: do all three to get to where you want to go.
• 3:51
Speaker 3: That's what we do. And to the degree that Black
• 3:54
Speaker 3: America builds wealth than Black enterprise is successful as well.
• 3:58
Speaker 1: You know, first of all, I got you on this show,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: but there are other ways people can communicate with you
• 4:03
Speaker 1: because you're writ and Coro producering host of Black Enterprise
• 4:06
Speaker 1: interview series Beyond the Hype Correct and Your Money and
• 4:11
Speaker 1: Your Life. You on Facebook Life tell us about Beyond
• 4:13
Speaker 1: the Hype and Your Money, which right there engages me
• 4:16
Speaker 1: right there because we always realize people hype stuff up
• 4:19
Speaker 1: and they're not ready and to hype it up, but
• 4:22
Speaker 1: in the end, it's involved your money. Beyond the hype
• 4:25
Speaker 1: and your money, what exactly is that?
• 4:27
Speaker 3: So those are two of about a dozen interview series
• 4:31
Speaker 3: that are part of the premier content offerings a black enterprise. Right,
• 4:35
Speaker 3: Your Money, Your Life is a traditional personal finance series
• 4:38
Speaker 3: that I do that usually streams on Thursdays at noon, right,
• 4:43
Speaker 3: and that's actually our oldest podcast right now of the
• 4:46
Speaker 3: current podcast, but it's a video series and podcast that
• 4:49
Speaker 3: you could subscribe to on all the podcasts services. And
• 4:54
Speaker 3: then Beyond the Hype, which actually streams on Tuesdays at noon.
• 4:57
Speaker 3: Actually the latest episode streamed earlier today is really my
• 5:02
Speaker 3: I could talk to anybody interview show about any topic,
• 5:05
Speaker 3: and today we talked about My guest was Karen R. Baker,
• 5:09
Speaker 3: who's a designed justice advocate an expert who talked about
• 5:15
Speaker 3: how artificial intelligence could be a real major threat to
• 5:21
Speaker 3: black culture if we don't really get ahead of it
• 5:23
Speaker 3: in terms of cultural appropriation or misappropriation. So we talked
• 5:27
Speaker 3: about the pros and cons of AI and why it's
• 5:29
Speaker 3: important for black people to stay on top of it. So,
• 5:32
Speaker 3: but we have other series like Sisters, Inc. Hosted by
• 5:35
Speaker 3: my colleague A Lisa Gumbs. We have The New Norm
• 5:38
Speaker 3: hosted by my colleagues Selena Hill. Even our CEO, But Graves,
• 5:42
Speaker 3: our CEO, and the son of the founder has a
• 5:45
Speaker 3: show called From the Corner office where he talks to
• 5:47
Speaker 3: Fortune five hundred CEOs about what's happening in corporate America.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean it's one of the many ways
• 5:54
Speaker 3: to engage in the premium content of Black Enterprise, in
• 5:58
Speaker 3: addition to our daily reporting of news and business and
• 6:02
Speaker 3: financial information at black enterprise dot com.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: Right, Alfred, you hit a buzzword with me AI. You know,
• 6:11
Speaker 1: because we always lasted the party last to get hired,
• 6:14
Speaker 1: first to get fired, you know, last, nobody stock tip last,
• 6:17
Speaker 1: and no about last to move in a good neighborhood. Now,
• 6:20
Speaker 1: artificial intelligence? Can you first, Let's let's stay on that
• 6:23
Speaker 1: for a minute, because you know it's an educational moment
• 6:28
Speaker 1: there for us all to find out exactly what that means.
• 6:31
Speaker 1: And then when I hear the word we got to
• 6:33
Speaker 1: get on top of it, it can't be a threat, because
• 6:35
Speaker 1: not only a threat just to the black community. You
• 6:37
Speaker 1: hear the federal government, you hear major corporations saying that
• 6:40
Speaker 1: we all got to get on top of this AI.
• 6:42
Speaker 1: This artificial intelligence, especially when you can just have just
• 6:46
Speaker 1: speaking to a computer phone and they can write a script.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: People are using law briefs for AI. And the history
• 6:54
Speaker 1: I know about AI is that once your information is
• 6:57
Speaker 1: put out in public, especially if you wanted to be private,
• 7:02
Speaker 1: did it immediately get shared. So let's take a moment
• 7:05
Speaker 1: to talk about AI because you hit a buzzword that
• 7:08
Speaker 1: I want to talk about more and more on the show,
• 7:10
Speaker 1: so it could be common knowledge on my show. The
• 7:13
Speaker 1: floor is yours effort?
• 7:14
Speaker 3: Well, well, let me say upfront that the show that
• 7:18
Speaker 3: you know we did today on Beyond the Height, you
• 7:21
Speaker 3: can still go to Black Enterprises YouTube channel and here
• 7:24
Speaker 3: you know Karen R. Baker who was a great guest
• 7:26
Speaker 3: who went deep on this subject for what it means
• 7:28
Speaker 3: to black people and black culture. All of the Black
• 7:31
Speaker 3: Enterprise series. If you go to the Black Enterprise YouTube challenger,
• 7:34
Speaker 3: you can check out those shows. We also had a
• 7:37
Speaker 3: I panel at our ROS Disruptor summit we had in Atlanta,
• 7:41
Speaker 3: the first stever we ever did that was a Black
• 7:43
Speaker 3: Entrepreneurs Because our point is this where every technology that
• 7:47
Speaker 3: has come about, whether it's Web two point zero, the
• 7:49
Speaker 3: basic Internet before that, every iteration of technology poses both
• 7:55
Speaker 3: a threat and an opportunity. And you said it, depending
• 7:58
Speaker 3: on when we get in and how aggressive we are
• 8:01
Speaker 3: about understanding it determines how much of it a thread
• 8:04
Speaker 3: it is to us and how much opportunity there is,
• 8:06
Speaker 3: so we've been leaning very heavily into. The goal is
• 8:10
Speaker 3: not to disengage. The goal is to learn about it
• 8:13
Speaker 3: as quickly as possible, to share the information that we
• 8:17
Speaker 3: have so that we can leverage it opportunities to build
• 8:20
Speaker 3: wealth and businesses, but also protect ourselves from those aspects
• 8:24
Speaker 3: that if we only see it as consumers of the technology,
• 8:28
Speaker 3: but not as producers, not as designers of the technology,
• 8:31
Speaker 3: we will be on the wrong end of the stick again.
• 8:33
Speaker 3: So we stress, especially to the entrepreneurs, especially to the creatives,
• 8:39
Speaker 3: especially to the founders in the black community, we need
• 8:42
Speaker 3: you leaning in to learn this stuff, master this stuff,
• 8:46
Speaker 3: to teach it, especially to our children and their children,
• 8:49
Speaker 3: so that we're not stuck again in we only consume,
• 8:52
Speaker 3: but we're not producing. And that's what Karen Baker's point.
• 8:56
Speaker 3: She's an expert in design, she's actually getting a PhD
• 8:59
Speaker 3: in design, because design is where it all happens. The
• 9:02
Speaker 3: people designing it on the front end, inventing it and
• 9:05
Speaker 3: creating it on the front end, will dictate what happens
• 9:07
Speaker 3: to those of us on the back end who are
• 9:09
Speaker 3: using it and being impacted by it now.
• 9:11
Speaker 1: AHF For you are the senior vice president executive editor
• 9:14
Speaker 1: at large of Black Enterprise, I would think that AI
• 9:19
Speaker 1: will be something you be. I'm not saying you're not,
• 9:21
Speaker 1: but I would think that when you combine that technology
• 9:26
Speaker 1: with Black Enterprise being digital and the fact that you know,
• 9:31
Speaker 1: you kind of like the face of Black entrepreneurship, I
• 9:35
Speaker 1: would think that AI can be a gateway to tremendous
• 9:41
Speaker 1: expansion and knowledge and information distribution. Am I correct in
• 9:45
  Speaker 1: assuming that?
• 9:46
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, one of the other things that I do,
• 9:49
Speaker 3: I am. I was an entrepreneur residence and lead mentor
• 9:53
Speaker 3: for the Black Owned Media and Sustainability Institution right otherwise
• 9:57
Speaker 3: known as BOMISI. We just had our big in Tulsa
• 10:02
Speaker 3: during Juneteenth and one of the sessions, one of the
• 10:04
Speaker 3: presentations was on AI and what it meant for Black
• 10:07
Speaker 3: on media. And the truth is we if we can
• 10:11
Speaker 3: get ahead of it and leverage it, it could be
• 10:14
Speaker 3: really important in terms of opportunities for black oed media,
• 10:17
Speaker 3: both traditional and established like Black Enterprise and newly emerging.
• 10:22
Speaker 3: So your point is very well made. It really does
• 10:25
Speaker 3: give us an opportunity if we lean into it, to
• 10:28
Speaker 3: use it to leverage the growth and viability of black
• 10:31
Speaker 3: on media. But the other thing is that we have
• 10:33
Speaker 3: to be able to emphasize what artificial intelligence can't do.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: It cannot take the place of what black people bring
• 10:41
Speaker 3: to the tape as the culture. And to the degree
• 10:43
Speaker 3: that what it's going to do is being being able
• 10:47
Speaker 3: to communicate individuals humanity even more valuable because you can't
• 10:51
Speaker 3: replace that. So the ability for black people to physically
• 10:54
Speaker 3: show up in places, to do media, to do interviews,
• 10:58
Speaker 3: it's going to be a higher have a higher value
• 11:00
Speaker 3: that it does now when a lot of remote stuff
• 11:03
Speaker 3: can be done through technological means.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, you can stop me if I'm if I'm leaning
• 11:10
Speaker 1: too far out, because because what people need to understand
• 11:13
Speaker 1: about artificial intelligence is that and this is what they
• 11:16
Speaker 1: are saying, people can rewrite our culture. And we're in
• 11:20
Speaker 1: a society today where they don't even want our culture
• 11:24
Speaker 1: and books. You can see this from states right now, Florida,
• 11:28
Speaker 1: and and and and and Texas right now where they
• 11:32
Speaker 1: get mad when you you know they where they don't
• 11:35
Speaker 1: want to admit slavery exist. So in AI, because AI
• 11:40
Speaker 1: is a software where it pulls information from different places.
• 11:45
Speaker 1: If it's pulls information. So not just black people, there
• 11:48
Speaker 1: are people out there who are a Nazi, neo Nazis.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: They can they can they can create libraries of information
• 11:57
Speaker 1: that can denounce the Holocaust. And so because of the AI,
• 12:01
Speaker 1: So when people start saying, wow, you we have to
• 12:04
Speaker 1: put a grip on it, we have to control this
• 12:06
Speaker 1: because what they're saying is if you get into an
• 12:08
Speaker 1: AI and sometimes you're kind of dealing with AI now
• 12:11
Speaker 1: when you're doing Google, because you can type into SIN
• 12:13
Speaker 1: and say, oh, where's my house, or we're finding a
• 12:16
Speaker 1: hardware store that's kind of like AI in the early stages.
• 12:20
Speaker 3: And so, Richard, you're making an important point. AI itself
• 12:25
Speaker 3: is not new. You're making a great point. AI exists.
• 12:28
Speaker 3: We have been using AI in one form and another
• 12:31
Speaker 3: for decades. Yes, what's different now is that a critical
• 12:34
Speaker 3: mass of data, yes, has not accumulated that AI can
• 12:38
Speaker 3: draw from. And that's what's making these leaps and bounds
• 12:42
Speaker 3: of innovation and power technological power possible. And that was
• 12:47
Speaker 3: my guest Karen Baker's point this morning. We have to
• 12:50
Speaker 3: be very serious about understanding on the front and where
• 12:54
Speaker 3: the data is being drawn from, where the design is
• 12:57
Speaker 3: happening because if you don't, if you're not if you're
• 13:00
Speaker 3: not present as black people at the front end, the
• 13:03
Speaker 3: impact on the back end is a fat of complete.
• 13:06
Speaker 3: So you're right, it's not you know, you really we
• 13:08
Speaker 3: really have to be not just watching, but engaged and
• 13:12
Speaker 3: involved because it's not that AI is new, it's just
• 13:15
Speaker 3: that there's so much data to draw from out there
• 13:18
Speaker 3: that it could be used for good or it could
• 13:20
Speaker 3: be used in a very destructive way. And you know,
• 13:23
Speaker 3: as particularly as relates to I mean we talked about
• 13:26
Speaker 3: on the show today. For example, you know, if people
• 13:29
Speaker 3: have AI takes the recording of your voice, it can
• 13:33
Speaker 3: make a voice that sounds just like Rashaun McDonald say
• 13:37
Speaker 3: something that you never said. Of the examples of rappers
• 13:41
Speaker 3: music like they didn't make the AI said here's how
• 13:44
Speaker 3: Drake would rap if I was Drake, and it could
• 13:47
Speaker 3: take enough data to duplicate that. And so we talked
• 13:49
Speaker 3: about how would that be applied if you get accused
• 13:52
Speaker 3: of a crime and the prosecutor presents a tape that
• 13:55
Speaker 3: says it's you and it's not you because somebody who's
• 13:59
Speaker 3: artistics intelligence to basically frame you. Now you're going to
• 14:02
Speaker 3: need to have a defense attorney that has technologically capability
• 14:06
Speaker 3: to be able to say no, this is a I
• 14:09
Speaker 3: think AI recording of my client, not my client. And
• 14:13
Speaker 3: so again it's not every tool could be a weapon
• 14:17
Speaker 3: or a tool web technology from a hammer to a
• 14:20
Speaker 3: nail to a car that could be used for good
• 14:23
Speaker 3: or bad. The key is being engaged enough to that
• 14:26
Speaker 3: technology to maximize the opportunity that it presents and defend
• 14:31
Speaker 3: yourself against the threat that it presents. And that's true
• 14:34
Speaker 3: for every technology. At the beginning of time is that
• 14:37
Speaker 3: your AI is happening fast.
• 14:38
Speaker 1: Alfred, you could have picked a better time to come
• 14:40
Speaker 1: on my show. I'm talking to senior vice president edited
• 14:43
Speaker 1: Executive Executive Editor at Large or Black Enterprise Effort. I'll
• 14:46

• 16:32
Speaker 7: his role as a health and wellness and bachelor, teaching
• 16:35
Speaker 7: everyday people how to live healthier lives.
• 16:39
Speaker 8: We believe that a lot of the root cause of
• 16:41
Speaker 8: cancer has to do with what we put on our skin.
• 16:44
Speaker 8: Our skin is the largest organ on our body and
• 16:46
Speaker 8: enforces everything. Just as if you hated your ender, consistent
• 16:50
Speaker 8: your liver, your kidneys have to deal with it. And
• 16:52
Speaker 8: they said, the reason why I will never be tested
• 16:54
Speaker 8: because the same companies that make the lotions to contain
• 16:57
Speaker 8: the aluminum, petroleum, the parabis and the and all these things,
• 17:00
Speaker 8: the same companies would make that are all these the
• 17:03
Speaker 8: same companies as a drug company, So they're never going
• 17:05
Speaker 8: to do a long term study of the effects of
• 17:08
  Speaker 8: their product.
• 17:10
Speaker 7: If you want to listen to this full interview with
• 17:12
Speaker 7: Hill Harper, it's available on money Making Conversations dot com.
• 17:17
Speaker 4: Now let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashaun McDonald.
• 17:22
Speaker 1: He you know, welcome back to Money Making Conversation Master Class.
• 17:25
Speaker 1: I have Aford on the throne, dif Friend, Black Enterprise,
• 17:28
Speaker 1: the a effort. You know, you know you got me
• 17:31
Speaker 1: fired up, and just let you know you got me
• 17:32
Speaker 1: fired up with that AI top.
• 17:34
Speaker 3: And see, I see, you know, but that's a.
• 17:37
Speaker 1: Beautiful thing because I've been looking and it was exposed
• 17:40
Speaker 1: to me at this week this weekend again right in
• 17:42
Speaker 1: front of me, at a major event that I tended
• 17:44
Speaker 1: to attended and just seeing that data being pulled out
• 17:47
Speaker 1: right on the big screen and how easy it was.
• 17:50
Speaker 1: Let me know that what you're doing and that conversation
• 17:53
Speaker 1: you had today, we should we should visit it. We
• 17:55
Speaker 1: should look at we should look at the idea that
• 17:58
Speaker 1: right now our stories and be rewritten. About as simple
• 18:02
Speaker 1: as a story like by Harriet Tubman can be rewritten
• 18:04
Speaker 1: through AI if we allow people to create databases where
• 18:08
Speaker 1: they where these AI systems go and pull information, and
• 18:12
Speaker 1: they can they can pull information that's wrong. And so
• 18:15
Speaker 1: that's what we're talking about when we say it's dangerous.
• 18:17
Speaker 1: It's dangerous when people of power, people of have the
• 18:21
Speaker 1: ability to rewrite the story. But more importantly, in this
• 18:24
Speaker 1: digital platform that black enterprise exist in, what are the
• 18:28
  Speaker 1: advantages of that.
• 18:30
Speaker 3: Well, I mean the reason why all most existing media companies,
• 18:33
Speaker 3: you know, whether you're doing video, audio, or print, and
• 18:38
Speaker 3: we you know we do all three is digital because
• 18:41
Speaker 3: that's the means of distribution totally We're not out of
• 18:43
Speaker 3: the magazine business because we fell out of love with magazines.
• 18:47
Speaker 3: We're we're out of the magazine business because you can't
• 18:49
Speaker 3: distribute information quickly that way anymore, you know, not as
• 18:53
Speaker 3: quickly as you can do it digitally. So, you know
• 18:56
Speaker 3: what we started back really early back probably around twenty
• 19:00
Speaker 3: two thousand and five, under the leadership of our currency
• 19:04
Speaker 3: or which grades, We recognized that digital was going to
• 19:07
Speaker 3: be the distribution means of the future, and we started
• 19:10
Speaker 3: moving in that direction even way back then, and we're
• 19:13
Speaker 3: still in business today as a result. But we also
• 19:16
Speaker 3: are known for our live and virtual events. Pretty much
• 19:21
Speaker 3: are familiar with our Women of Power Summit for Black
• 19:23
Speaker 3: Women in Corporate America upcoming which which I'm the leader
• 19:27
Speaker 3: of a content planning standpoint. We have our Black Men
• 19:30
Speaker 3: Excel Summit which is coming up in October October eleventh
• 19:34
Speaker 3: through thirteenth in Miami, which is about celebrating the excellence
• 19:38
Speaker 3: and leadership of black men in corporate America or in
• 19:42
Speaker 3: business business owners that do business with corporate America. That's,
• 19:46
Speaker 3: you know, the other core part of our business. So
• 19:48
Speaker 3: it's digital media and activation, live live in virtual events.
• 19:53
Speaker 3: Because we do virtual conferences too. We got really good
• 19:55
Speaker 3: at that during the pandemic because people couldn't gather, you
• 19:58
Speaker 3: had to figure out way to communicate information and connect
• 20:01
Speaker 3: people remotely. And so as a result, that's what Black
• 20:06
Speaker 3: Enterprise is today. And so Black Enterprise dot Com obviously
• 20:09
Speaker 3: is the core hub. And again, you can listen to
• 20:12
Speaker 3: all of our shows, you can get all of our
• 20:14
Speaker 3: daily content, you can subscribe to newsletters to get daily content.
• 20:18
Speaker 3: But also that's what you register for all of our events,
• 20:21
Speaker 3: and so it's a great hub. And also you should
• 20:23
Speaker 3: be following it. If your listeners aren't already, you should
• 20:26
Speaker 3: be following Black Enterprise on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram because
• 20:31
Speaker 3: we feed all of our shows, all of our content
• 20:33
Speaker 3: across those platforms. So if you can get it there too,
• 20:36
Speaker 3: as opposed to you having to go to the website.
• 20:38
Speaker 1: We know, let's let's go back a little bit. When
• 20:40
Speaker 1: you just brought up the celebrate the Excellence and Leadership
• 20:42
Speaker 1: of Black Men, the Black Men exl summer. Let's let's
• 20:45
Speaker 1: talk about that and the importance of it, and how
• 20:48
Speaker 1: does my listeners if they want to engage or find
• 20:51
Speaker 1: out more, where do they go?
• 20:53
Speaker 3: You can go to Black Enterprise dot com and you'll
• 20:56
Speaker 3: see the events tab and you can find the event,
• 20:59
Speaker 3: or you can go directly to the black men Excel site,
• 21:03
Speaker 3: Black Enterprise dot com, forward slash b m X the
• 21:08
Speaker 3: m X twenty twenty three and it will take you
• 21:10
Speaker 3: directly to the landing page. And we're honoring Anthony Anderson.
• 21:14
Speaker 3: We're honoring the new CEO of the Fee of Grain
• 21:20
Speaker 3: LLC Grain, We're honoring you know. Let me just give
• 21:25
Speaker 3: you the broader strokes. This is the only event that
• 21:30
Speaker 3: that that's a national event that honors and celebrates the
• 21:33
Speaker 3: excellence of leadership of black men just for being black men,
• 21:37
Speaker 3: not because we are great athletes, not because we can sing,
• 21:40
Speaker 3: not because we can wrap, not because we can act.
• 21:43
Speaker 3: But this honors black men and our leadership excellence across
• 21:47
Speaker 3: the board in business and in corporate America. This is
• 21:51
Speaker 3: gonna be our seventh year doing this event. It's kind
• 21:54
Speaker 3: of the parallel to what we do with black women
• 21:56
Speaker 3: for our Women of Power Summit, and it's powerful because sadly,
• 22:02
Speaker 3: most events for black men, though they are very important
• 22:05
Speaker 3: and necessary, kind of deal with us as if we
• 22:08
Speaker 3: are all dysfunctional and need to be fixed. Right, we
• 22:11
Speaker 3: found in our research going back to twenty fifteen that
• 22:15
Speaker 3: there were very few events that said, no, black men
• 22:18
Speaker 3: don't need to be fixed, we need to be celebrated
• 22:20
Speaker 3: and elevated. And then celebrating and elevating black men that
• 22:24
Speaker 3: creates the energy to help us to address any issues
• 22:28
Speaker 3: that we may have. But we're not the problem. We're
• 22:31
Speaker 3: the solution to the problem. And so that's why Black
• 22:33
Speaker 3: Men excel Us so important. It has grown tremendously unpopularity
• 22:37
Speaker 3: with the brothers who come every year, usually between five
• 22:40
Speaker 3: hundred and seven hundred brothers, all leaders in their own right,
• 22:43
Speaker 3: doing amazing things. And again I'm very excited about it,
• 22:47
Speaker 3: and I'm glad to be a part of it.
• 22:48
Speaker 1: First of all, thank you. That's why I want to
• 22:50
Speaker 1: go back a little bit on that, because again, as
• 22:52
Speaker 1: a black man, you know, there's so much negative information
• 22:56
Speaker 1: that's being distributed about us and just in general media.
• 22:59
Speaker 1: You know, sense like getting up from watching the news
• 23:01
Speaker 1: because it's going to be some black man arrested some
• 23:04
Speaker 1: black man and shot somebody. Some black man hasn't been
• 23:08
Speaker 1: in a fight, and.
• 23:09
Speaker 3: It's it's so when we started out and started you know, planning,
• 23:15
Speaker 3: you know, doing this event, again, the first year we
• 23:17
Speaker 3: did it was the twenty seventeen we made this. I
• 23:20
Speaker 3: made this statement. I said, if you're a black man
• 23:22
Speaker 3: in America, especially with the media, mainstream media, you fall
• 23:26
Speaker 3: into one of five buckets, it's either victim, perpetrator, athlete, entertainer,
• 23:33
Speaker 3: or Barack Obama, meaning you've got to be you know,
• 23:36
Speaker 3: you know, almost like a celebrity black man. Me and you,
• 23:40
Speaker 3: Rashan are invisible because we don't fall into the needles
• 23:43
Speaker 3: five buckets. We're not we're not the first black president.
• 23:46
Speaker 3: We're not victims, we're not perpetrators, we're not athletes, and
• 23:48
Speaker 3: we're not entertainers. And so what we said, we want
• 23:51
Speaker 3: to create a black men excel for the vast majority
• 23:54
Speaker 3: of us who are doing great things, who are great fathers,
• 23:57
Speaker 3: who are great entrepreneurs, who are doing great things, communities
• 24:00
Speaker 3: and companies all across this country, who don't fall into
• 24:03
Speaker 3: those five categories, yet still deserve to be recognized, you know,
• 24:08
Speaker 3: because you're right, you turn on the TV. If you
• 24:10
Speaker 3: don't fall into one of those five buckets, then you're
• 24:12
Speaker 3: not on the TV.
• 24:14
Speaker 1: You know, I've been I've the fortune of good bad fortune.
• 24:17
Speaker 1: I lived in New York and New York was horrible
• 24:20
Speaker 1: just watching blacks being I can't say it's the truth
• 24:24
Speaker 1: because I don't know what the truth is. That's what
• 24:26
Speaker 1: they were just saying when they and I was at
• 24:28
Speaker 1: the I was in LA in the early nineties when
• 24:31
Speaker 1: drive by shootings was ridiculous, So every news story is
• 24:35
Speaker 1: about a drive by shooting. Drive by shooting. It was
• 24:37
Speaker 1: just so disheartening. And so when I hear about events
• 24:40
Speaker 1: like this, they should be celebrated because for once we
• 24:44
Speaker 1: got a paint. We got to change the narrative of honesty.
• 24:47
Speaker 1: And this is what AI comes into play too, because
• 24:50
Speaker 1: AI can damage and hurt the progress that there's summus
• 24:55
Speaker 1: like this that you are doing and in producing are creating. Correct.
• 25:00
Speaker 3: Yes, I mean we've been fighting and it was the
• 25:03
Speaker 3: reason I became a journalist in the first place. Back
• 25:05
Speaker 3: when I was an undergraduate in college, now over forty
• 25:08
Speaker 3: years ago, I heard a speech by the granddaughter of
• 25:12
Speaker 3: Paul Roberson. Her name was Susan Robison. She was a
• 25:14
Speaker 3: producer for a black issue show called Like It Is
• 25:18
Speaker 3: with Gildoble here in New York. I grew up watching
• 25:20
Speaker 3: it with other kids, and she said that black people
• 25:22
Speaker 3: are in the battle of the images. It's why the
• 25:25
Speaker 3: black press existed. Why you know, Frederick Douglas and Odo
• 25:30
Speaker 3: By Wells and others got into this idea that we
• 25:34
Speaker 3: have to tell our own story. You said the word,
• 25:35
Speaker 3: we have to tell our own narrative, because if we
• 25:37
Speaker 3: don't control our own images, our own narrative, then we'd
• 25:41
Speaker 3: either become erased or attacked. And so the game is in.
• 25:46
Speaker 3: The battle is still going on. Whether once upon a
• 25:49
Speaker 3: time it was black newspapers, now it's AI and digital media,
• 25:52
Speaker 3: but it's the same battle. And you're right, if we
• 25:54
Speaker 3: don't tell our own stories, then we will always be
• 25:57
  Speaker 3: in trouble.
• 25:58
Speaker 1: My brother, at least once a quarter, I'd love to
• 26:01
Speaker 1: hear your voice on my show. I have been so inspired,
• 26:06
Speaker 1: so moved, and so educated by this conversation, and we
• 26:09
Speaker 1: need to hear you more. I know you've got podcasts.
• 26:15
Speaker 3: Brother, how much I admire you, respect you. I was
• 26:19
Speaker 3: so happy that we got the lay eyes on each other. Yes, sir,
• 26:21
Speaker 3: media honors a couple of you know a few weeks ago.
• 26:25
Speaker 3: So yeah, man, you call, I'm coming okay.
• 26:27
Speaker 1: I thank you and I appreciate you taking the time.
• 26:29
Speaker 1: Man in Black Enterprise that's right, Black Say magazine if
• 26:33
Speaker 1: you want to, but it's Black Enterprise and he and
• 26:35
Speaker 1: he answered the call. Thank you for coming on the show.
• 26:37
Speaker 3: Out for my pleasure, Rashaan be well, all.

Speaker 7: Gospel rapper Lacree has won multiple Grammy and Billboard awards
• 27:41
Speaker 7: and he is one of my.
• 27:42
Speaker 1: Favorite Christian rappers. He stated that he is focusing on
• 27:45
Speaker 1: faith over religion. I asked him.
• 27:47
Speaker 9: To explain, sometimes I think you wear that face, you
• 27:51
Speaker 9: just put on those lenses that allow you to just
• 27:53
Speaker 9: keep going and pushing through without dealing with the problems
• 27:56
Speaker 9: and the trauma, and you allow successes to define you.
• 28:00
Speaker 9: Instead of you being successful out of a healthy and
• 28:03
Speaker 9: whole version of yourself, You're allowing the successes to convince
• 28:07
Speaker 9: you that you are healthy and whole. And I think
• 28:09
  Speaker 9: that's a very different thing.
• 28:10
Speaker 10: And so for me, it was a matter of becoming
• 28:13
Speaker 10: a healthy, whole individual and dealing with some historical traumas
• 28:17
Speaker 10: and recognizing that was a slave what other people wanted
• 28:20
Speaker 10: of me and not being who I was created to be.
