- 0:00Welcome to five minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament in each. Episode We.
- 0:05Take just a few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New
- 0:07Testament, exploring the truths God is teaching us through His
- 0:11Word and expanding our view of who.
- 0:13He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 5, Jesus
- 0:45explains that there are many witnesses to the reality of who
- 0:47he is and why he has come. He speaks of the witness of John
- 0:51the Baptist who testified about him.
- 0:54Jesus speaks of the witness of his own works, the witness of
- 0:56the Father, and the witness of the Scriptures.
- 0:59Listen to the last few verses of this chapter as Jesus explains
- 1:03to his Jewish audience that the whole Old Testament testifies
- 1:07about him. He says you do not have His word
- 1:10abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom He sent.
- 1:13You search the Scriptures because you think that in them
- 1:16you have eternal life. It is these that testify about
- 1:19me, and you are unwilling to come to me so that you may have
- 1:22life. I do not receive glory from men,
- 1:26but I know you that you do not have the love of God in
- 1:29yourselves. I have come in my Father's name,
- 1:31and you do not receive me. If another comes in His own
- 1:34name, you will receive Him. How Can you believe when you
- 1:38receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory
- 1:41that is from the one and only God?
- 1:44Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father.
- 1:46The one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your
- 1:50hope. For if you believed Moses, you
- 1:52would believe me, for he wrote about me.
- 1:55But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe
- 1:58my words? What we have here is an alarming
- 2:01truth. Here's the short of it.
- 2:03It is very possible to dig into God's Word, to hold the
- 2:07Scriptures in high regard, to be known as a student of the Word,
- 2:12and to totally miss the main character, to totally miss the
- 2:16whole point of the Bible. That's what Jesus is saying
- 2:19here. These listeners have searched
- 2:21the Scriptures thinking that in them they had eternal life, but
- 2:24in searching them they did not submit to the very one who was
- 2:28offering eternal life. They based their understanding
- 2:32of their position with God not on what God said, not on what He
- 2:36revealed in Scripture about how they might be saved, but on
- 2:39their own status as students of the Word.
- 2:42They studied the Bible, but never submitted to it.
- 2:45They poured over the Scriptures but missed the Savior that all
- 2:48the Scriptures testify about. And friends, this is not a
- 2:51problem limited to 1st century Jews.
- 2:54We have the Scriptures in full. We have God's Word readily
- 2:57available to us, and we can study it, dig into it, claim to
- 3:01value it, And yet it is very possible for you and for me to
- 3:05still miss the entire point, for us to miss Jesus.
- 3:10And this problem really comes down to the one short verse in
- 3:13the passage we just read. Listen again to verse 44.
- 3:17How Can you believe when you receive glory from one another
- 3:21and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only
- 3:24God? From where are we seeking glory?
- 3:27What is our end goal? If we really love God's Word and
- 3:32we really love the God who wrote it, we will be seeking Him.
- 3:35We will be desiring to meet Him in the pages of Scripture and in
- 3:39every aspect of our lives. We will submit to Him and to
- 3:42what He says is best. We won't just read and study and
- 3:45memorize His Word. We will live it out.
- 3:48We'll obey it, but if we seek only the glory that comes from
- 3:51men, if we are content to be seen as a biblical scholar
- 3:55rather than to truly be a disciple of Jesus, we may gain
- 3:59that earthly status, but we will miss out on eternal joy.
- 4:04So dig into God's Word. Read it, study it, meditate on
- 4:07it, memorize it, but don't miss the main point.
- 4:10The Bible is about a real God who really created you and
- 4:14really loved you enough to send a real Savior to rescue you from
- 4:18your sin. Worship him, follow Him, obey
- 4:21Him. Meet the real God in the pages
- 4:24of His Word today.
