- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading

- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Mark chapter 5, Jesus
- 0:45performs a trio of miracles that, though they may seem
- 0:48disconnected from one another on the surface, work together to
- 0:51display one beautiful truth about the Savior.
- 0:54First, Jesus comes into the country of the Garrisons and
- 0:57encounters a demon possessed man, or as Mark says it, a man
- 1:01with an unclean spirit. No one was able to control this
- 1:05man, so he made his home among the tombs, a place that would
- 1:09make a person unclean after having been around the dead,
- 1:12meaning it was a place of isolation for this demon
- 1:14possessed man. People would literally put
- 1:17chains and shackles around him, and through the strength of the
- 1:20evil spirits within him, he would physically break the
- 1:23chains. He spent day and night
- 1:25tormented, screaming and gashing himself with stones.
- 1:29As Jesus approached him, he fell down before him and shouted.
- 1:32What business do we have with each other?
- 1:34Jesus, Son of the Most High God, I implore you, by God, do not
- 1:38torment me. Though the world may not
- 1:41recognize Jesus, the demons certainly do.
- 1:44Jesus then cast out what we find out is a legion of demons from
- 1:47this man, and at the request of the demonic horde, cast them
- 1:51into a herd of pigs that rushed off a steep bank and into the
- 1:54sea. And so the casting out of this
- 1:56legion is miracle #1 next Jesus is approached by a synagogue
- 2:01official named Jairus, whose daughter was sick to the point
- 2:03of death. But as Jesus headed to Jairus
- 2:06house, he was interrupted. Among the crowd of people that
- 2:09was pressing in on him was a woman who'd had a hemorrhage for
- 2:1212 years. She'd been bleeding for 12
- 2:15years. This would have, for essentially
- 2:17all of the last 12 years, made her unclean and caused her to
- 2:21have to live as a sort of outcast.
- 2:23This woman made her way through the crowd and desperately
- 2:26touched the cloak of Jesus, thinking, if I just touch his
- 2:30garments, I'll get well. And when she touched him, she
- 2:32was made well. Jesus, knowing that power had
- 2:36flowed from him, asks who touched him and gives the woman
- 2:40an opportunity to tell the truth.
- 2:42And when she does, he said to her daughter, Your faith has
- 2:46made you well. Go in peace and be healed of
- 2:49your affliction. Miracle #2 Finally, we get back
- 2:53to Jairus's daughter while Jesus was still speaking to the
- 2:56hemorrhagic woman. He's just healed.
- 2:58People come from Jairus's house with the news that his little
- 3:01daughter has died. But Jesus was unmoved.
- 3:04He said do not be afraid any longer, only believe.
- 3:09Then he entered the room where the now dead girl was lying and
- 3:12took her by the hand and said to her, Talith akum or little girl,
- 3:17I say to you, get up. And at once this little 12 year
- 3:20old got up and began to walk. Miracle #3 Now what do these 3
- 3:25miracles have to do with one another?
- 3:27I'm glad you asked. In each of these three
- 3:29scenarios, the demon possessed man, the bleeding woman, and
- 3:32Jairus's dead daughter. Uncleanness is front and center.
- 3:36Going among the tombs would have made one unclean.
- 3:39Jesus interacts with what Mark calls an unclean spirit, a touch
- 3:43from an unclean woman, and touching the hand of a recently
- 3:46deceased girl. All of these things should have
- 3:48made Jesus unclean. Jesus is entering uncleanness,
- 3:53but rather than the uncleanness rubbing off on Jesus, as the Son
- 3:57of God enters these situations, His cleanness, His power, his
- 4:02perfection and holiness rubs off on those who were unclean.
- 4:06He enters uncleanness, and rather than being made unclean,
- 4:10he makes the unclean one clean. He enters brokenness and doesn't
- 4:14walk out broken, but walks out having made the broken one
- 4:18whole. And friends, this is the gospel.
- 4:21Jesus has entered into our sinful state.
- 4:24He's engaged us when we were far from him and sick and dirty and
- 4:29dead, and has made us new and near and alive and whole and
- 4:33clean. So don't hide your mess from
- 4:37Jesus. Don't fear how He might respond
- 4:39when you come near Him. He is our only hope.
- 4:42He is the only one who can heal us.
- 4:45Let us go to Him over and over and over and receive His healing
- 4:50touch and be made clean.
