- 2:29Speaker 1: people that are out there that need to hear the
- 2:31Speaker 1: show that are, victims and this is one of those
- 2:34Speaker 1: important shows where you don't know whose life you're gonna
- 2:37Speaker 1: be able to help and affect in a positive, way
- 2:39Speaker 1: whose life literally could be saved because of this show
- 2:44Speaker 1: and the information that they're going to. Hear and this
- 2:47Speaker 1: legislation center that you introduced today In, washington D. C is.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Incredible and your guest who's with you IN dc as,
- 2:54Speaker 1: well it's amazing the story that she is, telling but
- 2:59Speaker 1: also just how powerful it is to stand up for
- 3:03Speaker 1: so many others that need.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Help, well that's.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Right this WEEK i introduced legislation in The senate Called Trey's,
- 3:08Speaker 3: law and it is designed to protect, kids kids who
- 3:13Speaker 3: tragically are the victims of sexual. Assault And Trey's law
- 3:18Speaker 3: prohibits non disclosure agreements binding children who have been victims
- 3:23Speaker 3: of sexual. Assault and this is a problem we are seeing,
- 3:28Speaker 3: nationwide a staggering. STATISTIC a child In america is sexually
- 3:34Speaker 3: abused every nine. Minutes, yeah one in four girls In
- 3:40Speaker 3: america will be sexually abused before she turns. Eighteen one
- 3:46Speaker 3: in six boys In america will be sexually abused before
- 3:49Speaker 3: he turns. Eighteen and we have been seeing over and
- 3:55Speaker 3: over again when they're violators are held, accountable when they're,
- 4:02Speaker 3: prosecuted and when there is civil litigation that it is
- 4:06Speaker 3: becoming a routine for the violators to insist upon a
- 4:10Speaker 3: non disclosure, agreement a non disclosure agreement that binds the
- 4:15Speaker 3: children and forces them to be. Silent And Trey's law
- 4:20Speaker 3: is named for A, Texan Trey, carlock who horrifically was
- 4:25Speaker 3: abused at a summer camp In, missouri abused over a
- 4:29Speaker 3: number of, years and his abuser was prosecuted as at
- 4:34Speaker 3: abuser is serving three consecutive life terms in. Prison and
- 4:40Speaker 3: in the course of civil, Litigation trey was convinced to
- 4:45Speaker 3: sign a non disclosure agreement and that secret haunted him
- 4:54Speaker 3: so much so that at twenty eight years, old he
- 4:57Speaker 3: took his own. Life and that is a tragedy in
- 5:05Speaker 3: his life and his family's, life but it's a tragedy.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Nationally and we have a guest on the podcast tonight
- 5:13Speaker 3: who's another text In Elizabeth. Phillips elizabeth Is trey's, sister
- 5:18Speaker 3: and she has taken the grief and agony of losing
- 5:23Speaker 3: her brother and of knowing what happened to. Him losing her.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Brother it's one thing to lose a sibling in a car,
- 5:31Speaker 3: accident my sister died of a drug. Overdose it is
- 5:38Speaker 3: always difficult to lose a family member that you, love
- 5:43Speaker 3: but it is particularly gut, wrenching, yeah to lose a
- 5:51Speaker 3: family member who you know was the victim of abuse
- 5:55Speaker 3: and was haunted by. That AND i will tell, You,
- 5:58Speaker 3: elizabeth she lives In dallas and she has devoted thousands
- 6:04Speaker 3: of hours to fighting for trades. Law Tray's law has
- 6:07Speaker 3: been adopted number of, states Including. Texas texas has adopted
- 6:11Speaker 3: Trades law and at the state.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Level but, today with a group of.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Seven bipartisan co, Sponsors i've introduced at the federal level
- 6:24Speaker 3: and we're going to get passed at the federal.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Level BUT i want to Start. Elizabeth we welcome To.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Verdic we're glad to have.
- 6:28Speaker 5: You thank you so much for not just the introduction
- 6:32Speaker 5: of Trades law TO Us congress this, morning but for
- 6:34Speaker 5: offering this platform as. Well AND i, AGREE i hope
- 6:38Speaker 5: it goes. Viral every parent needs to understand how this system,
- 6:41Speaker 5: works BECAUSE i think there are a lot of assumptions
- 6:44Speaker 5: that if your child is sexually, abused whether it be
- 6:47Speaker 5: at a summer camp which was Trade, story or a
- 6:49Speaker 5: school or a faith based setting or sports, setting they're
- 6:53Speaker 5: going to come forward, immediately but there's something called delayed.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Disclosure children that are victimized in this way don't come
- 6:59Speaker 5: forward oftentimes for, decades if ever at, all and we
- 7:03Speaker 5: need to be sure that we are protecting children and
- 7:06Speaker 5: their voices so that when they do come, forward survivors are, heard,
- 7:10Speaker 5: believed and that we can respond with action to hold
- 7:13Speaker 5: the bad actors. Accountable, yeah so thank you for the. Conversation,
- 7:16Speaker 5: well thank you for being. Here let me ask, you
- 7:19Speaker 5: could you just tell your brother's, story to just just
- 7:22Speaker 5: share with our listeners and, viewers tell folks who your
- 7:26Speaker 5: brother was and what happened to. Him, yeah and thank
- 7:29Speaker 5: you for going into some of that in your, introduction
- 7:31Speaker 5: because it's honestly the hardest part for me to talk.
- 7:34Speaker 5: ABOUT i can go over to stats and data about
- 7:37Speaker 5: child sexual abuse and ways to prevent it all day,
- 7:40Speaker 5: long but it's really hard for me to talk About.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Trey AND i didn't know that you also lost a,
- 7:46Speaker 5: Sibling So i'm sorry for your loss And i'm sorry
- 7:49Speaker 5: we can relate on.
- 7:50Speaker 3: That that's not not a club anyone wants.
- 7:53Speaker 2: To be a member.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Exactly BUT i think also we understand that you can
- 8:00Speaker 5: can grieve it and move, on or you can grieve
- 8:05Speaker 5: it and turn that pain into. Purpose AND i think
- 8:08Speaker 5: what we saw at the press conference this morning was
- 8:10Speaker 5: pain turned into. Power when there was a nineteen year
- 8:13Speaker 5: old young woman who came, forward it named her abuser
- 8:15Speaker 5: for the first time because her voice was protected Under
- 8:17Speaker 5: Trey's law since that was passed and put into effect
- 8:20Speaker 5: In missouri Last.
- 8:21Speaker 6: August and so that's what we're wanting to expand.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Nationally this journey for me began because my brother died
- 8:27Speaker 5: by suicide when he was twenty, eight not only due
- 8:31Speaker 5: to the child sexual abuse on what we now believe
- 8:34Speaker 5: to be trafficking at the hand Of cannicut camps based
- 8:36Speaker 5: in Southwest. Missouri they had international mission. Trips they were
- 8:39Speaker 5: moving kids across state. Lines it was never fully. Investigated
- 8:44Speaker 5: the criminal case landed In Taney, County, missouri in The sheriff's,
- 8:47Speaker 5: department and at the time of my brother's perpetrator, sentencing
- 8:51Speaker 5: there were fifty seven known. Victims but we now have
- 8:56Speaker 5: had many victims come forward SINCE i started a website
- 8:59Speaker 5: Called facts Of kinnocut dot com with other survivor families
- 9:02Speaker 5: to get the facts out there to parents and warn
- 9:05Speaker 5: the public that this is much more widespread than what
- 9:08Speaker 5: had been reported upon massive cover up which is not
- 9:12Speaker 5: unusual in a lot of these situations because OF. NDAs
- 9:15Speaker 5: so that's what we're addressing With Trey's law that's now
- 9:18Speaker 5: been introduced To, congress very. Bipartisan you, said you, know
- 9:22Speaker 5: no one you've brought this to has said no to.
- 9:24Speaker 5: IT i mean it's something everyone should get behind and
- 9:27Speaker 5: hopefully can get. Behind you, know In trey's, story he
- 9:31Speaker 5: was groomed and then abused by a camp. Director so
- 9:34Speaker 5: seven to seventeen this was going.
- 9:36Speaker 2: On and so he was seven when he started going
- 9:38Speaker 2: to the, camp when he.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Started going to the, camp and that's when the grooming
- 9:42Speaker 5: began and then the sexual abuse. Began and then his,
- 9:47Speaker 5: perpetrator who like you, said is now in prison for
- 9:50Speaker 5: three life, terms confessed to his crimes and was sentenced
- 9:53Speaker 5: in twenty, ten but under the civil statute limitations In,
- 9:57Speaker 5: Texas trade was forced to file his civil lawsuit by
- 9:59Speaker 5: the twenty Three and just, imagine you, know go back
- 10:03Speaker 5: to when you were twenty, three were you ready to
- 10:05Speaker 5: go up against a system and quote unquote ministry Like
- 10:10Speaker 5: cannoncock that has between thirty five and forty five million
- 10:12Speaker 5: in annual. REVENUE i, mean at twenty, three you're still a.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Kid we call them college, kids, Right you're just trying
- 10:17Speaker 5: to get through college and start a, job build a.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Life and if someone puts a settlement agreement in front
- 10:23Speaker 5: of you and says sign on the dotted line and
- 10:26Speaker 5: this can all go, away and you can have restitution
- 10:29Speaker 5: and some you, know some money for your, healing for
- 10:34Speaker 5: therapy or before lost, income you're.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Probably going to do.
- 10:38Speaker 4: It and for closure.
- 10:40Speaker 6: And for healing, enclosure thank.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You AND i say that BECAUSE i have friends that
- 10:46Speaker 1: worked At cannicock during the time period you're talking. ABOUT
- 10:48Speaker 1: i also know people that were abused At cannacock and
- 10:54Speaker 1: this story WHEN i saw we were doing, it and
- 10:55Speaker 1: it's It's i've lost friends who've committed suicide because of sexual.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Abuse But cannicok is a place WHERE i went To,
- 11:02Speaker 1: Ole MISS a lot of PEOPLE i grew up with From,
- 11:05Speaker 1: memphis From, houston they went To. Cannacock and the cover
- 11:09Speaker 1: up word that you used there IS i think one
- 11:12Speaker 1: of the most sad parts about all this is there.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Was so many of these NDAs.
- 11:16Speaker 1: CENTER i didn't realize, it like how much this was
- 11:19Speaker 1: going to just bring up in. Me but when you
- 11:22Speaker 1: know people that were abused there and you've set with
- 11:25Speaker 1: them and you hear how the system did not protect,
- 11:28Speaker 1: them BUT i actually think made them a victim a
- 11:30Speaker 1: second time over by the way that they use these,
- 11:32Speaker 1: NDAs it is infuriating because you realize, that like everything
- 11:37Speaker 1: in this situation worked against them for, years.
- 11:40Speaker 5: And that's what came in The texas. HEARINGS i was
- 11:44Speaker 5: calling this institutional abuse on top of child sexual. Abuse
- 11:48Speaker 5: so you're exactly. Right and, Yes memphis is a huge
- 11:51Speaker 5: market FOR canniccuk And kids Of Your america which is
- 11:55Speaker 5: another ministry and outside Of branson That Joe white still
- 11:59Speaker 5: runs this, day there's been no change in. Leadership no
- 12:03Speaker 5: one's been held accountable because of these. Crimes and so
- 12:06Speaker 5: you were asking about my story and how we got
- 12:08Speaker 5: to this, point and really it was BECAUSE i learned
- 12:13Speaker 5: more about my brother's trauma and his death THAN i
- 12:15Speaker 5: knew in his life because of THE.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Nda so Until treyslaw went.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Into effect In Texas september of twenty twenty, FIVE i
- 12:23Speaker 5: never saw what he. Signed he wouldn't talk about. It
- 12:25Speaker 5: he was so, terrified even in therapeutic, settings even trying
- 12:28Speaker 5: to get sober IN aa for, example he was Worried
- 12:33Speaker 5: kannicuk would come after him if he mentioned all of
- 12:36Speaker 5: the people involved that knew about What pete was doing
- 12:39Speaker 5: and didn't report the crimes to the authorities or disciplined him,
- 12:43Speaker 5: internally and that allowed this perpetrator to go on and.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Abuse what we now know is hundreds of more. Victims
- 12:51Speaker 5: and that's one perpetrator. Alone so victims Of kannicuk have
- 12:55Speaker 5: asked for three. Things admit to known, failures release IN,
- 12:58Speaker 5: das and commission into an. Investigation, since AS i, mentioned
- 13:03Speaker 5: The Taney County Sheriff's department missed a few. Spots we
- 13:07Speaker 5: don't need a rabbit hole on that right, now but
- 13:09Speaker 5: that's the three asks of, survivors very common since steps
- 13:12Speaker 5: they could. Take so we've Done cannacuk's job for, them
- 13:15Speaker 5: and we've found out that we now know of over
- 13:18Speaker 5: ninety perpetrators with allegations against them affiliated With cannoncuk and
- 13:22Speaker 5: its associated ministries and programs across the country and.
- 13:25Speaker 6: World ninety over, Ninety so the, ninety.
- 13:29Speaker 4: How many have been held.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Accountable i've got to know that number because AS i
- 13:34Speaker 1: was told about this several months, ago they said that
- 13:38Speaker 1: not only are there still people in the ninety as
- 13:40Speaker 1: you're described that are, affiliated there are some that are
- 13:43Speaker 1: still in major leadership roles and around.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Children, yes so we're calling it out, again Doing cannoncuck's
- 13:50Speaker 5: job for. THEM i think as, parents we have an
- 13:52Speaker 5: expectation that if a child molester or a sex offender
- 13:57Speaker 5: is caught at an institution where your child was attending or,
- 14:01Speaker 5: enrolled that you will be informed if they are ever
- 14:05Speaker 5: charged with anything. Criminal that is not what cannacuck has.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Done so we've done that job for. Them so facts
- 14:11Speaker 5: about cannicuck dot. Com we have a known abusers page
- 14:15Speaker 5: where we name thirteen and might even be more now
- 14:18Speaker 5: that have convictions that are, yeah they have criminal, indictments
- 14:23Speaker 5: convictions or formal allegations in the media coroborated by multiple.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Victims and then.
- 14:29Speaker 5: The rest of the perpetrators in our database are just
- 14:33Speaker 5: still out there living their lives and a lot of them.
- 14:38Speaker 6: Have never been held. Accountable we know who they.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Are we've turned that database over to the authorities and
- 14:44Speaker 5: we are hoping that THE fbi or some sort of
- 14:46Speaker 5: law enforcement agency takes, action but the normal thing to
- 14:50Speaker 5: do when you're not covering up for pedophiles as an,
- 14:53Speaker 5: institution using in das and continuing to promote pedophiles within
- 14:58Speaker 5: your organization or moving them around to associated, ministries which
- 15:02Speaker 5: is another THING cannicuk has. Done they have a year
- 15:04Speaker 5: round ministry called K life similar to A Young, life
- 15:07Speaker 5: WHICH i think is better. Known they will move someone
- 15:10Speaker 5: that has allegations at the camp to a chapter OF
- 15:12Speaker 5: K life where they go on to continue harming.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Children so our known abuser's.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Page is supposed to be a public facing database for
- 15:20Speaker 5: when we know cannonicok affiliate has been convicted and dieted
- 15:25Speaker 5: or formally alleged of child sexual, abuse and the rest
- 15:28Speaker 5: of it will come to light over time as more
- 15:30Speaker 5: and more victims come. Forward the list continues to, grow
- 15:33Speaker 5: and with exposure like this we expect even.
- 15:35Speaker 1: More america is entering the two hundred and fiftieth year
- 15:39Speaker 1: and the direction of this country is being decided right
- 15:41Speaker 1: now in our culture and our, economy and who we
- 15:45Speaker 1: choose is support matters more than. Ever most wireless companies
- 15:49Speaker 1: don't care who you are or what you.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Believe they just want your. Money Patrion. Mobile they're.

- 17:12Speaker 2: Bill so one of the things you.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Described we did a press conference today Announcing Trays law
- 17:19Speaker 3: in The senate and you described the pressure that was
- 17:22Speaker 3: on your, brother not just from the camp but also
- 17:26Speaker 3: from his own.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Lawyer share that story a little.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Bit, Yeah, so you, know one of the questions as
- 17:32Speaker 5: we were going state by, state you, know starting In
- 17:34Speaker 5: texas because that's my home state and that's Where trey grew.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Up we spent a few years also In, Atlanta. Georgia
- 17:41Speaker 5: georgia's Introduced trades law along with eight other, jurisdictions but
- 17:44Speaker 5: Then Missouri Pastreys law Last. August and you, know my
- 17:50Speaker 5: brother was abused in so many jurisdictions that there were
- 17:53Speaker 5: different options for the. Venue in his civil, case he's
- 17:57Speaker 5: good In, texas AS i, mentioned that ended with settlement
- 18:01Speaker 5: agreement that involved a RESTRICTIVE. Nda and he was an
- 18:04Speaker 5: adult when he sued for the child sexual abuse that he.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Suffered but he had exactly and you know that.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Therapist after his, DEATH i started doing my own investigation
- 18:16Speaker 5: to understand what just happened to my, brother and that
- 18:21Speaker 5: therapist said that he had made a comment just before
- 18:25Speaker 5: he died that they would always control him and he
- 18:28Speaker 5: would never be. Free and that's what it feels like
- 18:31Speaker 5: living under AN. Nda and In, america where we stand
- 18:35Speaker 5: on freedom and freedom of, speech and anyone who studied constitutional,
- 18:40Speaker 5: LAW i mean that is a right as An american
- 18:44Speaker 5: citizen to have freedom of, speech and we protect it with.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Veracity but in this, case there's been a misuse of,
- 18:50Speaker 5: ndias which originally were created to protect intellectual property like
- 18:56Speaker 5: The coca cola recipe or read, secrets and they've since
- 19:02Speaker 5: been misused to silence victims of childhood sexual, abuse, trafficking
- 19:08Speaker 5: even adult sexual assault. Survivors that was addressed in The
- 19:11Speaker 5: Speak Out act that passed in twenty twenty two with
- 19:14Speaker 5: the co sponsor Of Treys, Law Senator. Jilbrandt but kids
- 19:18Speaker 5: are being put under these, NDAs and kids they can't
- 19:22Speaker 5: consent to contracts or clauses like, this and so oftentimes
- 19:25Speaker 5: it's a guardian or a parent who is signing THIS
- 19:28Speaker 5: nda on behalf of their. Child the child grows, up
- 19:31Speaker 5: becomes a young man or woman realizes what their parents
- 19:35Speaker 5: signed and that they can't own their own story.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And it's just a bar or even feel like they
- 19:41Speaker 1: can't heal because they can't talk about.
- 19:43Speaker 4: It in, fact they're so.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Afraid talking to one person that was a victim of,
- 19:48Speaker 1: this they described it to me this. Way they, Said
- 19:50Speaker 1: cannicut basically had enough money to buy silence to protect
- 19:55Speaker 1: the brand because they knew if we were told our,
- 19:58Speaker 1: stories the brand would die and all the money would
- 20:01Speaker 1: stop coming.
- 20:01Speaker 4: In that's a simplistic. Way but you mentioned their.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Revenue this was you got to spend money to save
- 20:08Speaker 1: this brand and continue to grow in sports and all
- 20:12Speaker 1: the other activities that they that they. DO i mean
- 20:14Speaker 1: that is that a fair way of putting.
- 20:16Speaker 5: IT i think that's, yeah that's definitely a fair way
- 20:19Speaker 5: of putting. It and to add the other thing that's
- 20:23Speaker 5: a layer of trauma in this is that their cover
- 20:26Speaker 5: up bought enough time for these victims to be out of.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Statute so they can't now that they know the extent
- 20:31Speaker 5: of the cover up unless under a certain discovery, rule
- 20:34Speaker 5: which you could speak to as a, lawyer, Senator but
- 20:38Speaker 5: they can't even have access to the civil courts and
- 20:41Speaker 5: the jurisdiction where they were. Abused so In, missouri the
- 20:44Speaker 5: civil statute of limitations to sue an institution that's liable
- 20:47Speaker 5: for child sexual abuse or trafficking has been in the
- 20:50Speaker 5: age of twenty six and that's been unchanged since nineteen thirty.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Nine and so we're doing a lot of advocacy work
- 20:56Speaker 5: In missouri to say survivors need more. Time AS i
- 21:00Speaker 5: said when you asked the first, question there is a
- 21:03Speaker 5: lot of research on delayed. Disclosure my brother was unfortunately
- 21:08Speaker 5: forced into disclosure because he was named as a victim
- 21:11Speaker 5: during the criminal, proceedings and so he didn't have decades
- 21:15Speaker 5: to process what happened to him and then come.
- 21:17Speaker 6: Forward but victims that weren't.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Named or who came forward closer to the time Of
- 21:22Speaker 5: Pete newman's arrest to name one of, again over ninety
- 21:25Speaker 5: perpetrators we're aware of.
- 21:26Speaker 6: To date they.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Got how was he, Caught how was his abuse?
- 21:32Speaker 6: Discovered there are a few theories on.
- 21:34Speaker 5: That canicut hasn't really been transparent about what led to his.
- 21:37Speaker 5: Confession SO i would love to know the answer to that.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Question and that's why an independent investigation or some sort
- 21:43Speaker 5: of law enforcement agency stepping in is so necessary in.
- 21:45Speaker 5: This he confessed allegedly In march two thousand and nine
- 21:50Speaker 5: to abusing seven boys and then he wasn't arrested Until
- 21:55Speaker 5: september two thousand and, nine after summer camp season when,
- 21:58Speaker 5: uninterrupted and then upon arrest they started investigating him, criminally
- 22:05Speaker 5: and then that led to his sentencing In february twenty.
- 22:07Speaker 5: Ten here we are in twenty twenty, six and because
- 22:11Speaker 5: of facts About kannacuk which was created by a coalition
- 22:15Speaker 5: of survivor, families and then recent publicity THROUGH Usa today
- 22:19Speaker 5: published five articles on. This The dispatch published It The
- 22:24Speaker 5: New York. TIMES i just went on The Sean Ryan,
- 22:27Speaker 5: show and we're getting more and more disclosures not just
- 22:31Speaker 5: About Pete, newman but other perpetrators associated With kannukuck and
- 22:34Speaker 5: other leadership who covered this. Up and they are calling
- 22:38Speaker 5: attorneys who are, Saying i'm, sorry you're fifteen, thirty forty
- 22:43Speaker 5: five years too. Late so victims don't know they're on
- 22:46Speaker 5: the clock when perpetrators know exactly, when and institutions Like
- 22:51Speaker 5: kannicok know exactly when the deadline is to file a
- 22:54Speaker 5: civil lawsuit against. Them so they bought enough time at
- 22:56Speaker 5: this point for the cover up to have.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Worked.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Well one of the things you talked about at the
- 23:01Speaker 3: press conference today is how your brother's lawyer was pressuring
- 23:08Speaker 3: him to sign THIS, nda and the incentives of the current. System,
- 23:13Speaker 3: look an abuser has every incentive in the world to
- 23:18Speaker 3: try to cover it, up to try to hide, it
- 23:19Speaker 3: to want AN, nda to not have truth and. Transparency
- 23:24Speaker 3: and so we are seeing NDAs demanded by abusers in
- 23:28Speaker 3: exchange for. Compensation and the way our legal system works
- 23:34Speaker 3: is typically if a victim has a, lawyer that lawyer
- 23:38Speaker 3: will usually be compensated on a contingency basis where they
- 23:42Speaker 3: receive a portion of whatever financial recovery there. Is so
- 23:48Speaker 3: the lawyer has every incentive in the world to try
- 23:51Speaker 3: to reach a, deal to try to reach a, settlement
- 23:53Speaker 3: to have a financial amount, paid and to discount the
- 23:58Speaker 3: harm of silencing their. Client and so it's one of
- 24:05Speaker 3: the real values of trades.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Law it is that.
- 24:10Speaker 3: When this passes AND i didn't, say IF i said
- 24:12Speaker 3: when we will get this, passed thank. You when this,
- 24:16Speaker 3: passes that incentive will go. Away, look if you're negotiating a,
- 24:21Speaker 3: SETTLEMENT i used an example. Earlier, today there aren't settlement
- 24:26Speaker 3: agreements that, say as a condition of the, settlement you
- 24:30Speaker 3: have to deal crack, cocaine because dealing crack cocaine is,
- 24:34Speaker 3: illegal and so you can't agree in a settlement to
- 24:37Speaker 3: do something that is. Illegal by taking NDAs off the
- 24:40Speaker 3: table for forcing victims of child sex abuse to not
- 24:46Speaker 3: be able to disclose what happened to, them that incentive
- 24:51Speaker 3: for their lawyers to pressure them to do this will go. Away,
- 24:54Speaker 3: likewise and, importantly we Drafted trade's law so that a
- 24:58Speaker 3: victim can still in insist on AN nda for the.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Abuser if a victim DECIDES i don't want my story,
- 25:04Speaker 3: told that's your right as. Well we're not going to
- 25:06Speaker 3: force a victim to tell his story or her story
- 25:09Speaker 3: against their.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Will that you're protecting the victim in the way you're writing,
- 25:13Speaker 1: this WHICH i think is such an important part of this.
- 25:15Speaker 1: CONVERSATION i want people to understand that it's a lot
- 25:17Speaker 1: of what we talked about with we want to protect.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Victims for, example when we're exposing everything With Epstein, foules
- 25:22Speaker 1: it's the same mentality. Here if you don't want your
- 25:24Speaker 1: name out, there we want to protect.
- 25:26Speaker 3: It.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Right that's the heart Of Trey's law is giving survivors
- 25:30Speaker 5: ownership of their own, stories, yes so that they can
- 25:33Speaker 5: decide what they want told about what happened to. Them
- 25:36Speaker 5: the trauma alone is enough. Abuse we don't need to
- 25:40Speaker 5: pile that. On and you bring up a good, Point,
- 25:41Speaker 5: senator around the incentives and the incidentive's being misaligned because
- 25:47Speaker 5: this type of case falls under personal injury. Law and
- 25:51Speaker 5: so you've been to law school and in that area
- 25:55Speaker 5: of the, law it's typically your attorneys who are taking
- 25:59Speaker 5: auto accident pieces or slip and.
- 26:01Speaker 6: Falls child sexual abuse is a, fear it's in.
- 26:04Speaker 5: IT i like that it's a personal injury claim because
- 26:07Speaker 5: it is an injury to the, brain to the, soul
- 26:10Speaker 5: and so it should be a personal injury. Claim but
- 26:13Speaker 5: the way personal injury lull works is that you are
- 26:16Speaker 5: looking to, settle keep this from. GOING i, mean over
- 26:19Speaker 5: ninety six percent of CASES i think subtle outside of
- 26:22Speaker 5: trial when it comes to personal. Injury and so you,
- 26:27Speaker 5: know the victim doesn't want to have to go to
- 26:28Speaker 5: trial and put themselves through more. Trauma they are incentivized to.
- 26:32Speaker 5: Settle and a lawyer, says this can all be behind
- 26:34Speaker 5: you if you sign on the dotted, line and then
- 26:36Speaker 5: they can take forty, percent which is the typical commission
- 26:39Speaker 5: on a case like, this move on to the next
- 26:41Speaker 5: once and, repeat and that doesn't work when we're talking
- 26:44Speaker 5: about childhood sexual.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Abuse, well and THE Us Supreme court has Described they've,
- 26:49Speaker 3: said other than, murder rape is the most grievous harm
- 26:54Speaker 3: that could be inflicted to a. Person And i've spent
- 26:58Speaker 3: a lot of my career against child's sexual. Abuse so
- 27:02Speaker 3: WHEN i was The Solicitor general Of, TEXAS.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I argued in front of THE. U.
- 27:08Speaker 3: S Supreme court Defending louisiana's law that provided for capital,
- 27:13Speaker 3: punishment the death penalty for the most egregious child. Rapist,
- 27:17Speaker 3: unfortunately The Supreme court five to four struck that, down
- 27:20Speaker 3: so we did not prevail in that. Case texas's law
- 27:23Speaker 3: was also struck. Down When louisiana's law was struck, DOWN
- 27:26Speaker 3: i also Defended texas has A Texas Sexually Violent Predator
- 27:31Speaker 3: Civil commitment law that gives the courts the ability to
- 27:34Speaker 3: take a sexually violent predator and put them in civil,
- 27:37Speaker 3: commitment take them off the streets to protect. People and
- 27:41Speaker 3: a state court of appeals had struck that law down
- 27:43Speaker 3: and concluded it was, unconstitutional AND i argued the case
- 27:47Speaker 3: in front of The Texas Supreme court defending that, law
- 27:51Speaker 3: and we won. Unanimously the law was reinstated and it's
- 27:54Speaker 3: now a tool that you have to go after sexual.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Predators and you know we met. Before so this, bill
- 28:01Speaker 3: my lead co sponsor Is Kirsten, Gellibrand democrat From New.
- 28:06Speaker 3: York and then we have on this bill as, well
- 28:08Speaker 3: we Have Katie Britt republican From alabama's a dear. Friend
- 28:12Speaker 3: we Have Eric, Schmidt republican From, missouri another very good.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Friend and then we also Have Amy, Klobachar democrat From.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Minnesota we Have Peter, Welch democrat From, vermont and Then Jeane,
- 28:24Speaker 3: shaheen A democrat From New. Hampshire AND i think we
- 28:27Speaker 3: will get very widespread bipartisan. Support to be, honest those
- 28:32Speaker 3: six are the only SIX i. ASKED i started with,
- 28:35Speaker 3: Them i've worked all of. Them i've worked with on previous.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Legislation But i'll tell You jelibrand AND i started working
- 28:45Speaker 3: on this issue more than a decade ago because she
- 28:48Speaker 3: was a leader in going after sexual assault in the,
- 28:51Speaker 3: military and there's been a real problem with sexual assault
- 28:53Speaker 3: in the, military and the way it used to work
- 28:57Speaker 3: is the decision about whether to prosecute a rapist was
- 29:02Speaker 3: made by the commander and the commander frequently knew the,
- 29:08Speaker 3: violator often was close to the, violator and victims of
- 29:12Speaker 3: sexual assault in the military were afraid to report the
- 29:15Speaker 3: rapes because they didn't believe the commander would be. Fair
- 29:19Speaker 3: they believed the commander would be biased in favor of the.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Violator and so jelibranon this is back twenty, thirteen WHEN
- 29:28Speaker 3: i was a brand new baby senator had just been.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Elected kirsten was leading the charge, saying this doesn't make any,
- 29:34Speaker 3: sense and the decision of whether to prosecute should not
- 29:38Speaker 3: be made by the commanding, officer but rather should be
- 29:41Speaker 3: made by a career military, prosecutor so in the, military
- 29:46Speaker 3: but not in the chain of, command so not connected
- 29:50Speaker 3: to the alleged. Violator AND i will tell you The
- 29:54Speaker 3: pentagon fought tooth and. Nail they hated that. Provision AND
- 29:58Speaker 3: i was on the ste En At Armed Services committee
- 30:01Speaker 3: With kirsten at the, time AND i heard her make the,
- 30:03Speaker 3: argument make the argument passionately for changing the prosecution prosecuting
- 30:09Speaker 3: decision to a career. Prosecutor and it was one of
- 30:12Speaker 3: those instances where sometimes you say, hearings don't you know
- 30:16Speaker 3: our our kind of? Performance they don't necessarily change anyone's. Mind,
- 30:19Speaker 3: WELL i listened to her arguments AND i was, persuaded
- 30:22Speaker 3: AND i went up to her AND i, Said, KIRSTEN
- 30:23Speaker 3: i want to team up with you and let's get this.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Done and we.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Did it took nearly a decade to get it done
- 30:30Speaker 3: because The Barack obama wouldn't do. It by the Way
- 30:32Speaker 3: obama was, president he could have done it, unilaterally and
- 30:35Speaker 3: he wouldn't do.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Uh and it Took we ultimately got the legislation, passed
- 30:40Speaker 3: but it was it was a decade long. Battle this
- 30:43Speaker 3: is One i'm confident will be. FASTER i don't think
- 30:45Speaker 3: this will take a decade to make. Happen you, know
- 30:49Speaker 3: you mentioned at the press conference also that we had
- 30:53Speaker 3: another victim of sexual abuse share her. Story her name
- 30:56Speaker 3: Is Jaden, harris AND i want to play what she
- 31:00Speaker 3: said at the at the press conference because this was this.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Was really powerful and and.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Moving she was she was sharing about about the sexual
- 31:09Speaker 3: violence she experienced and and give a, listen give a.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Watch good.
- 31:15Speaker 7: Morning, FIRST i want to thank these co sponsors for
- 31:18Speaker 7: their leadership and in Filing trey's law at the federal.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Level my name Is Jaden, harris nineteen years, old And
- 31:31Speaker 7: i'm here today not just as a child sexual abuse
- 31:34Speaker 7: survivor From, Branson, missouri but as someone whose voice was
- 31:37Speaker 7: protected By Drey's. Law it's why you can be here.
- 31:40Speaker 7: Today WHEN i came forward about the ABUSE i, EXPERIENCED
- 31:47Speaker 7: i was prepared for it to be. Difficult WHAT i
- 31:50Speaker 7: wasn't prepared for was the intimidation not only for my
- 31:54Speaker 7: abuser but for my own for my own lawyer to
- 31:57Speaker 7: sign a non disclosure agreement in exchange for restitution during
- 32:01Speaker 7: a mediation. PROCESS i was alone when it came to
- 32:05Speaker 7: fighting for my. Voice it was both my abuser and
- 32:09Speaker 7: my lawyer that tried to require me to sign AN,
- 32:14Speaker 7: nda a contract to a clause that would have restricted
- 32:19Speaker 7: my ability to speak about the details of what happened
- 32:21Speaker 7: to me for the rest of my. Life imagine being
- 32:25Speaker 7: told you can never tell your own. Truth despite the
- 32:29Speaker 7: bowling for my attorney and all those involved in the,
- 32:32Speaker 7: case in my, HEART i KNEW i had to stand for,
- 32:34Speaker 7: truth not just for, myself but for others who feel
- 32:39Speaker 7: they had been. Silenced i'm standing here today with my
- 32:45Speaker 7: voice Because trey's law protected it as a matter of public,
- 32:48Speaker 7: policy AND i was able to achieve settlement while preserving
- 32:52Speaker 7: my ability to speak out and hope of protecting. Others
- 32:57Speaker 7: due to learning About Trey's law And, MISSOURI i knew something.
- 33:00Speaker 7: IMPORTANT i cannot be legally forced into. Silence no agreement
- 33:05Speaker 7: could take away my right to speak about my own
- 33:08Speaker 7: experience and those responsible for the. Abuse that legal right changed.
- 33:13Speaker 7: Everything it shifted the balance and. Power it meant that
- 33:17Speaker 7: any resolution would not come at the cost of me
- 33:20Speaker 7: owning my, story not only as having a voice essential
- 33:25Speaker 7: to my healing, journey but is also HOW i can warn.
- 33:28Speaker 7: Others my abuser is still out in public every. Day
- 33:32Speaker 7: he goes by the Name. Raisa he is a well
- 33:35Speaker 7: known entertainer In branson who still has a magic, show
- 33:39Speaker 7: And i'm concerned about ongoing. Victimization the criminal justice system
- 33:47Speaker 7: has done nothing to remove him from being around. Children
- 33:51Speaker 7: So i'm going to do. Something i'm speaking out, today
- 33:55Speaker 7: And i'm advocating the law that protected me to protect
- 33:59Speaker 7: victims every. Where federal action On Trey's law is. CRITICAL
- 34:06Speaker 7: a survivor's freedom of speech should not depend on. GEOGRAPHY
- 34:10Speaker 7: i am fortunate That Trey's law had passed In missouri
- 34:13Speaker 7: and allowed me to keep my voice but SOMEONE'S zip
- 34:16Speaker 7: code should not determine whether they can tell the truth
- 34:19Speaker 7: and warn the public about. Predators this needs to be.
- 34:22Speaker 7: National trey's law is straightforward but. Powerful it makes non
- 34:29Speaker 7: disclosure agreements in cases of child sexual abuse void and.
- 34:33Speaker 7: Unenforceable it ensures that secrecy cannot be purchased when a
- 34:38Speaker 7: child has been. Harmed it affirms that survivors can be,
- 34:41Speaker 7: seen heard and, believed and that's in the best interest
- 34:45Speaker 7: of public. Safety what almost happened to me citing away
- 34:49Speaker 7: my voice should never be an option in this. COUNTRY
- 34:53Speaker 7: i am grateful to be part of today's important milestone
- 34:57Speaker 7: and making that happen in setting truth for, You thank, You.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Santaer you're watching. That it's.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Painful it also is incredible to see someone like that
- 35:12Speaker 1: get their voice because of this law and how that
- 35:16Speaker 1: was enacted in her. State and that's exactly what you
- 35:21Speaker 1: are trying to do. Nationwide and it's WHY i say
- 35:23Speaker 1: this for everyone, watching please share. This there may be
- 35:28Speaker 1: somebody that needs to know the website with a connection With.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Cannonicut there may be someone else that needs to know
- 35:34Speaker 1: this because they're in AN. Nba this is why we
- 35:37Speaker 1: do this show And it's one of those episodes THAT
- 35:40Speaker 1: i hope you'll put it everywhere on social.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Media, well and, look there's something really powerful about a
- 35:49Speaker 3: survivor taking ownership of their own, story of their own
- 35:53Speaker 3: abuse and sharing their. Story it can be, healing it
- 35:57Speaker 3: can be. Empowering look when When jaden told her, story
- 36:02Speaker 3: there was not a dry eye in the, ROOM i
- 36:04Speaker 3: mean it was you just heard, it and for those
- 36:07Speaker 3: of you watching, online you saw. It and this is
- 36:11Speaker 3: a nineteen year old young woman who was bearing her.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Soul and there's something powerful a for the survivor to
- 36:21Speaker 3: move past the pain and. Grief but it's also powerful
- 36:26Speaker 3: because for every survivor that tells her story or his,
- 36:29Speaker 3: story there are dozens or hundreds or even thousands of
- 36:35Speaker 3: other victims who never told. Anybody and one of the
- 36:39Speaker 3: horrific things about this crime in, Particular, listen if you're
- 36:44Speaker 3: walking home at night and you get mugged and beaten,
- 36:47Speaker 3: up you're not typically embarrassed or ashamed to ADMIT i
- 36:51Speaker 3: got mugged and beaten.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Up someone stole my.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Wallet sexual, assault and particularly sexual assault for, Kids, uh
- 37:01Speaker 3: the the, guilt the self, loathing the fear that the
- 37:07Speaker 3: precise the.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Shame.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Uh so many victims are trapped in silence and never
- 37:17Speaker 3: report their.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Crimes.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Uh and and so there is a power not just
- 37:22Speaker 3: for the, survivor but but for everyone else who's been a,
- 37:28Speaker 3: victim who has not been able two to own their.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Truth and you, KNOW i don't like language like. That
- 37:38Speaker 3: own their truth sounds a little new agy for. Me
- 37:40Speaker 3: it's not the WAY i normally see.
- 37:42Speaker 6: Right but survivors hold the truth.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And here it is. Right.
- 37:47Speaker 3: IT i don't think someone has their truth on whether
- 37:50Speaker 3: two plus two is four. Right but but your life
- 37:54Speaker 3: and your, experience no one should take, away particularly from a,
- 38:01Speaker 3: child the ability to tell your. Story and it's And
- 38:08Speaker 3: i'll tell you, Look Trey's law would not have been
- 38:11Speaker 3: a law In, Missouri, elizabeth without your, leadership it would
- 38:16Speaker 3: not have been a law In. Texas it would not
- 38:17Speaker 3: have been a. LAW i, mean you have devoted a
- 38:19Speaker 3: lot of time to fighting for this.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Nationwide.
- 38:23Speaker 5: Yeah AND i hope to get back to my day job.
- 38:27Speaker 5: Eventually i'm a mother of. Three i've got other things to.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Do this is not SOMETHING i want to. Carry it's
- 38:33Speaker 5: always encouraging when legislators like yourself step up and say
- 38:38Speaker 5: we're going to champion this on behalf of survivors so
- 38:41Speaker 5: That trey's outcome doesn't happen. Again AND i just want
- 38:46Speaker 5: to comment On jaden and what she did today because
- 38:49Speaker 5: that was. Heroic it will inspire others to come, forward
- 38:54Speaker 5: and as she stated in her, testimony she just doesn't
- 38:57Speaker 5: want other people to continue to be victim her. Abuser
- 39:01Speaker 5: today was the first time she named her. Abuser, wow.
- 39:06Speaker 6: AND i am so.
- 39:08Speaker 3: HONORED i didn't realize that when she said, THAT i
- 39:10Speaker 3: assumed she had said it. PREVIOUSLY i did not realize
- 39:13Speaker 3: she had.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Not that's when a press conference becomes, holy sacred space
- 39:19Speaker 5: because she was sharing the truth about a predator who's
- 39:23Speaker 5: still out. There AND i am amazed by her courage
- 39:29Speaker 5: because she achieved settlement last year and asked if she
- 39:34Speaker 5: wanted this. Opportunity it was healing for, her as hard
- 39:37Speaker 5: as it was to be able to stand on. Truth
- 39:41Speaker 5: and that's one of our slogans with the Treys wal
- 39:43Speaker 5: campaign is every voice of truth, matters BECAUSE i agree with,
- 39:47Speaker 5: YOU i don't like this language Around they are. Truth
- 39:50Speaker 5: there is absolute. Truth And jaden stood on that today
- 39:57Speaker 5: in her, remarks and we got to stand beside her
- 40:00Speaker 5: and that was so, powerful and like you, said not
- 40:03Speaker 5: a dry eye in the, room because if you're not
- 40:05Speaker 5: personally affected by child sexual, abuse you sure know someone
- 40:09Speaker 5: Who waymen is or will come forward eventually about.
- 40:13Speaker 2: That the numbers are.
- 40:14Speaker 5: Staggering, yeah and we have studied. This only one in
- 40:18Speaker 5: seven victims will ever come. Forward and the deadly disclosure
- 40:23Speaker 5: ISSUE i was bringing up, earlier especially with male, victims
- 40:26Speaker 5: they often don't disclose until between the age of fifty and,
- 40:29Speaker 5: seventy and so it's important parents understand that because AGAIN
- 40:34Speaker 5: i think they think if someone experiences, this that child's
- 40:39Speaker 5: going to come home and tell mom and dad. Immediately
- 40:41Speaker 5: but to your, point it's not like you, know an
- 40:44Speaker 5: injury you would endure on the streets or in some
- 40:48Speaker 5: sort of other. Accident this does have an element of,
- 40:51Speaker 5: shame and What jaden did today is she put the shame.
- 40:54Speaker 5: Backward it belongs on the person who as it was
- 40:58Speaker 5: never her.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Fault and let me say to anyone listening to, this
- 41:01Speaker 3: if you've been a, victim it's not your. Fault and
- 41:04Speaker 3: that's one of the lies these abusers try to convince
- 41:08Speaker 3: children that it is your fault that you invited, this
- 41:12Speaker 3: that the blame is with, you and that is a
- 41:14Speaker 3: total and complete.
- 41:16Speaker 5: Lie, Yeah and that's what grooming does and what grooming
- 41:19Speaker 5: is is it creates. Secrecy if you ever tell, Anyone
- 41:23Speaker 5: i'm going to hurt your loved, one or if you
- 41:27Speaker 5: ever tell, anyone it's going to ruin. Everything that is
- 41:29Speaker 5: a grooming tactic to keep the victim quiet and they
- 41:32Speaker 5: often don't come out of that brainwashing for, many many.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Years so that's why research shows all of this around
- 41:38Speaker 5: it late.
- 41:38Speaker 6: Disclosure.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Jaden she was able to move from victimization to survivor
- 41:44Speaker 5: and now survivor advocate in a matter of, months and
- 41:47Speaker 5: that's what we got to witness today thanks to you
- 41:50Speaker 5: Introducing Trey's law federally along With Senator jilligren and other co.
- 41:54Speaker 5: Sponsors AND i Thought Senator britt had some really poignant
- 41:56Speaker 5: remarks as.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Well she was.
- 41:57Speaker 5: Fantastic, oh and it is very clear that the group
- 42:02Speaker 5: you mentioned, earlier the ones you've asked so, far they
- 42:05Speaker 5: are behind. Survivors they want to protect survivors' voices and
- 42:08Speaker 5: that's What Trey's law will. Do and it does need
- 42:11Speaker 5: to be national because going state by state creates an
- 42:14Speaker 5: imbalance protects the people in, power the predators and the
- 42:19Speaker 5: institutions that harbor these predators over a child having ownership
- 42:23Speaker 5: of their. Story and that's the core of our mission.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Here and thank you for taking time out of not
- 42:31Speaker 5: a slow news day to make this a priority to
- 42:33Speaker 5: hear from people Like jaden and others.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Who spoke this is important to happen and to go
- 42:38Speaker 3: to the really corrosive power of. Shame last year and
- 42:43Speaker 3: we talked about this earlier, today a law THAT i
- 42:46Speaker 3: authored and we passed into law was To Take It Down.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Act And Take It Down act makes it a crime
- 42:53Speaker 3: to post non consensual intimate, imagery either real, pictures and
- 42:58Speaker 3: you see so called revenge porn of explicit photographs or
- 43:02Speaker 3: videos that a couple breaks up and one, Decides, Okay
- 43:06Speaker 3: i'm going to hurt my former lover and publish and
- 43:12Speaker 3: no one has the right to make that public and
- 43:14Speaker 3: to do that to someone. Else but we've also seen
- 43:17Speaker 3: WITH ai the rise of deep, fakes and this problem
- 43:22Speaker 3: has increased more than three thousand percent in the last,
- 43:25Speaker 3: year and more than ninety percent of the victims or
- 43:27Speaker 3: either women or teenage. Girls and when we were pushing
- 43:32Speaker 3: to pass it and building the coalition to pass.
- 43:34Speaker 2: It one of the things we.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Did The First lady became very actively involved in this,
- 43:39Speaker 3: legislation AND i appreciated. SHE i hosted The First lady
- 43:42Speaker 3: On Capitol hill and she was at a roundtable where
- 43:45Speaker 3: she met with a number of the. Victims and to
- 43:50Speaker 3: give you a, sense there was one person who testified
- 43:53Speaker 3: who is a state legislator In South carolina whose son
- 44:00Speaker 3: had received it was, online and he was a, teenager
- 44:06Speaker 3: and he thought he was talking with a cute teenage.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Girl and the supposed cute teenage girl was flirting with,
- 44:14Speaker 3: him and teenage boys everyone can make foolish, decisions but
- 44:20Speaker 3: teenage boys in. Particular this cute girl convinced him to
- 44:26Speaker 3: take revealing in naked pictures of himself and to send those.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Pictures it turned out that the cute girl was not
- 44:36Speaker 3: a cute, girl but rather was a, predator a, predator
- 44:42Speaker 3: a foreign predator who then began blackmailing him and, Saying
- 44:47Speaker 3: i'm going to take this picture that you just. Took
- 44:50Speaker 3: you just took a naked picture of yourself and send
- 44:52Speaker 3: it to. Me i'm going to send this picture to your.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Family i'm going to send it to your Parents i'm
- 44:57Speaker 3: going to send it to your. Friends i'm going to
- 44:58Speaker 3: send it to everyone unless you give me money. Sextortion and,
- 45:04Speaker 3: tragically this teenage boy took his. Life the entire exchange
- 45:09Speaker 3: from the first interaction to when he took his own
- 45:13Speaker 3: life was ninety.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Minutes and his father shared that.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Story but that's the power of shame of this teenager
- 45:21Speaker 3: who had taken a picture of thinking he was, flirting
- 45:24Speaker 3: and then the terror of IF i get exposed for,
- 45:28Speaker 3: that which look compared to being a victim of sexual,
- 45:32Speaker 3: assault taking a picture of yourself is not nearly as,
- 45:36Speaker 3: severe and yet that shame was so powerful that that
- 45:42Speaker 3: teenage boy took his own. LIFE i, mean this is
- 45:45Speaker 3: the pressures on our. Kids they're, enormous and they face
- 45:50Speaker 3: things that technology amplifies all of.
- 45:54Speaker 6: This, yeah it's really an. Epidemic.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yeah and.
- 46:00Speaker 6: As a mom of, THREE i know you have two.
- 46:01Speaker 5: Girls the threats are different than they were in our
- 46:05Speaker 5: childhoods and.
- 46:06Speaker 6: Very, different very.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Different we were playing one in three one three kids
- 46:10Speaker 3: will be propositioned sexually.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Online, yeah one.
- 46:13Speaker 5: Three and so, again thank you for championing The Take
- 46:17Speaker 5: It Down act and your co sponsors and the survivors
- 46:21Speaker 5: and sadly the families victimized in that. Situation The National
- 46:24Speaker 5: center On Missy next With Your children just put out
- 46:26Speaker 5: a very powerful video on that issue in. Particular and
- 46:29Speaker 5: WHEN i was the board chair of an anti trafficking,
- 46:31Speaker 5: organization THE fbi put out their notice on sex. Stortion
- 46:35Speaker 5: we had something come through a case around girls being
- 46:38Speaker 5: trafficked On. Venmo so it sometimes often these apps parents
- 46:42Speaker 5: aren't even thinking, about but roadblocks especially, Atrocious so many
- 46:49Speaker 5: examples of abuse happening on, discord and then what they
- 46:53Speaker 5: do is they take it. Live so in my brother's,
- 46:56Speaker 5: story it was an institution that covered up. Abuse now
- 47:00Speaker 5: these tech companies covering up abuse and the bad actors
- 47:04Speaker 5: are a step ahead of, us and the legislation can't
- 47:08Speaker 5: continue to be. Reactive WHAT i Think trey's law does
- 47:13Speaker 5: is it removes that barrier because the shame is already
- 47:15Speaker 5: inherent in the crime, itself and it removes that barrier
- 47:19Speaker 5: so that victims come forward, Quicker we can catch the
- 47:22Speaker 5: bad guys, faster and the truth comes to light a
- 47:25Speaker 5: lot sooner than when the power and balance is in
- 47:29Speaker 5: such a way that, lawyers even plaintiffs attorneys as we've
- 47:32Speaker 5: discussed or others are keeping that victim from speaking. Out
- 47:38Speaker 5: so NDA's are one. Barrier but the shame is real
- 47:42Speaker 5: and the gap in parntal education is, real and that's
- 47:45Speaker 5: why conversations like this really.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Matter, Well, elizabeth thank you for taking your. PAIN i
- 47:52Speaker 2: know you missed your.
- 47:54Speaker 3: BROTHER i know you feel the pain every, day but
- 47:59Speaker 3: thank you for taking that and Saying i'm not just
- 48:02Speaker 3: going to. Degrieve i'm not just going to. Weep i'm
- 48:05Speaker 3: going to use the pain to make a difference and
- 48:08Speaker 3: help others because your courage. Matters it has already changed
- 48:13Speaker 3: the law in a number of states across the, country
- 48:15Speaker 3: and it's going to change the law. Nationally and your
- 48:18Speaker 3: leadership is why this is. Happening and SO i just
- 48:20Speaker 3: want to say thank.
- 48:21Speaker 6: You it's a sacred.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Honor final QUESTION i want to bring up real quick.
- 48:26Speaker 1: One will you give the website one more time for
- 48:28Speaker 1: people that may have been affected At cannicock with the
- 48:31Speaker 1: place where your brother, was and to senator so this
- 48:34Speaker 1: doesn't drag on for a decade to get it. Passed
- 48:37Speaker 1: what can vertict listeners do to help advocate for? This
- 48:42Speaker 1: and no matter who their senator.
- 48:44Speaker 5: Is so the whistleblower website on Cannon cook Is facts
- 48:49Speaker 5: About cannoncock dot. Com and then our website For Trey's
- 48:53Speaker 5: law Is tradeslaw dot. Org there's a community page for
- 48:56Speaker 5: survivors who want to tell their story in a safe
- 48:58Speaker 5: way until we get this ledge past and they don't
- 49:01Speaker 5: feel safe coming out fully in their. Identity we had
- 49:04Speaker 5: a survivor testify In missouri just a couple of weeks,
- 49:07Speaker 5: ago and he, said for twenty five, Years i've been
- 49:09Speaker 5: A John doe and Today i'm coming forward in my
- 49:10Speaker 5: full name because of trays passing In. Texas that's the
- 49:13Speaker 5: power Of Trey's law In. Texas and you, know we
- 49:17Speaker 5: heard About missouri today at the press conference and just
- 49:19Speaker 5: Replay jaden's.
- 49:21Speaker 6: Remarks so this needs to be.
- 49:23Speaker 5: National the other way to support this effort is through
- 49:27Speaker 5: The No More Victims alliance and that website is In
- 49:30Speaker 5: mvalliance dot. Org and we have a lot of advocates
- 49:34Speaker 5: and allies who want to help support. This And Senator
- 49:37Speaker 5: i'm curious your thoughts as far as what are the
- 49:39Speaker 5: most effective calls to action for people that want to jump.
- 49:44Speaker 3: In so let me say one. Thing the press, conference
- 49:47Speaker 3: we had probably about fifty people who.
- 49:50Speaker 6: Came it was, packed.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Many of whom were themselves victims or they were the
- 49:55Speaker 3: families of. Victims and the, emotions the tea years in the.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Room it WAS i actually think that THE tv cameras
- 50:04Speaker 3: did not pick up on the folks that were, there
- 50:07Speaker 3: that were supporting what we were. Doing but it was really. Powerful,
- 50:10Speaker 3: look what can you? Do one THING i would encourage
- 50:12Speaker 3: you to. Do share this, Podcast send this podcast to your,
- 50:15Speaker 3: friends send them the YouTube, link send them the audio.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Link encourage people to learn about trades, law and then
- 50:27Speaker 3: pick up the phone and make a phone. Call call your,
- 50:30Speaker 3: senator call your house, member and urge them past trades.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Law look those phone. Calls people wonder do those phone calls?
- 50:38Speaker 3: Matter do they make a? Difference And i'll tell you they.
- 50:40Speaker 3: DO i get a report every, day AND i think
- 50:44Speaker 3: this is true for most members Of. CONGRESS i get
- 50:46Speaker 3: a report of how many calls we got and what
- 50:49Speaker 3: the topics, were what the people were. Urging and you,
- 50:52Speaker 3: notice if there's a surge on a, topic it makes
- 50:57Speaker 3: a difference and it focuses the. Mind so speaking, out
- 51:01Speaker 3: urging your elected representatives to support this. Law as we've
- 51:04Speaker 3: got broad bipartisan, Support we're going to get this done
- 51:08Speaker 3: and also speak, out you, know speak out on social,
- 51:11Speaker 3: media put up a post On, facebook put up a
- 51:13Speaker 3: post on x or or True social Or instagram or
- 51:16Speaker 3: whatever whatever platform you. Use but but speak, out uh
- 51:22Speaker 3: and advocate it because the more people hear about, THIS
- 51:27Speaker 3: i think it is basic common.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Sense there is no reason a.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Child lacks the emotional maturity to make a decision to
- 51:37Speaker 3: bind themselves by AN. Nda and And trade's law is
- 51:40Speaker 3: going to, say we're not going to allow children to
- 51:42Speaker 3: be taken advantage of first when they're, abused but they're
- 51:45Speaker 3: they're taking advantage of a second time when when they
- 51:49Speaker 3: are pressured into signing AN nda and muzzled for the
- 51:54Speaker 3: rest of their. Life and and, look we can't necessarily
- 51:59Speaker 3: stop every instance of abuse of kids in the first,
- 52:03Speaker 3: instance so though obviously we want, to but every predator
- 52:07Speaker 3: we take off the street stops that predator for victimizing another,
- 52:12Speaker 3: child another. Victim but we can stop the second. Victimization
- 52:16Speaker 3: we can say we are not going to, allow as
- 52:18Speaker 3: a matter of, law for children who have experienced this
- 52:23Speaker 3: violence to be. Silenced and that's what we're trying to.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Do And, elizabeth that's what your leadership is producing.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Well and that's why we call this a public safety.
- 52:30Speaker 5: Bill and you, know nothing will bring my brother. Back
- 52:34Speaker 5: and thank you for acknowledging, that like this is happening
- 52:37Speaker 5: out of, heartbreak AND i see it as you, know
- 52:42Speaker 5: grief can be love and. Action So i'm taking action
- 52:46Speaker 5: because of what my brother's life and death has taught.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Me so bigger, picture you, know encourage people to not
- 52:53Speaker 5: let these hardened lessons die in.
- 52:57Speaker 6: Vain we won't let this be in.
- 52:58Speaker 5: Vain and thank you for taking action with, Me with
- 53:02Speaker 5: all the survivors in the room, today who flew in
- 53:04Speaker 5: from across the. Country they've been advocating In georgia And
- 53:07Speaker 5: alabama And missouri And, texas and they showed up in
- 53:11Speaker 5: that room and it was, yes full of, tears but
- 53:13Speaker 5: also full of.
- 53:14Speaker 6: Hope.
- 53:14Speaker 5: Yes and there's some other bills right now that it needs,
- 53:17Speaker 5: support like The Renewed Hope act and The Defiance, act
- 53:21Speaker 5: which is a compliment to The Take It Down. Act
- 53:23Speaker 5: and so This congress can achieve a lot to protect.
- 53:26Speaker 5: Victims and if people do call their elected, legislators then
- 53:33Speaker 5: we can get this. Done AND i love hearing you
- 53:35Speaker 5: say that over and over that it's not an if
- 53:38Speaker 5: it's a, win, yes and you know with this kind
- 53:41Speaker 5: of thing there's never a. Win it is a lose
- 53:44Speaker 5: lose in my family's. Case but, we like you, said
- 53:49Speaker 5: we can prevent this from. Happening we can catch it
- 53:51Speaker 5: sooner and this era can.
- 53:53Speaker 4: End, amen don't.
- 53:55Speaker 1: Forget we do this show three days a, Week, Monday
- 53:57Speaker 1: wednesday And. FRIDAY i ask you if if you get
- 54:00Speaker 1: to see, this please share the video YouTube video On
- 54:04Speaker 1: facebook as. Well you can share it on x and
- 54:07Speaker 1: share this. Podcast you can hit that little forward button
- 54:10Speaker 1: and share it wherever you are on social. Media hopefully
- 54:12Speaker 1: you can help others and victims come forward and understand
- 54:15Speaker 1: what's happening with the laws and how they're.
- 54:17Speaker 4: Changing, also be an.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Advocate talk to your senator and call their offices and
- 54:21Speaker 1: let them know about this.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Law they may not know what's going on with.
- 54:23Speaker 1: It let them know why you're in favor of, it
- 54:26Speaker 1: why they should get behind it so it doesn't take
- 54:28Speaker 1: ten years to get this pass and The senat AND
- 54:30Speaker 1: i will see you back here in a couple of
- 54:32Speaker 1: days
