- 0:05Hey guys, and welcome to another episode of The Lines and
- 0:08Thriving for Teachers. I'm still Mel, and today we are
- 0:13diving into something that every teacher faces every single year
- 0:18and that is building a respectful classroom
- 0:22environment. Now let's be honest, respect in
- 0:27the classroom isn't something that just happens because we
- 0:31show up with a planner and a smile.
- 0:34It is something that we actually have to work really hard to
- 0:37create. Well, Co create really, and it
- 0:40all starts with us. So let's talk about the real
- 0:44stuff, the moments, the mindset and the methods that make
- 0:48respect something that is felt and not just something that's
- 0:52talked about or stuck up on a poster in the classroom.
- 0:55So if you want respect, you have to give it first.
- 1:01Honest truth bomb there. If it doesn't, it doesn't really
- 1:04matter how young or old your students are.
- 1:07Respect is a two way St. You can't demand something from
- 1:11someone that you're not willing to model yourself.
- 1:15Kids will pick up on that energy really fast.
- 1:18Now, I'm not saying that you should be your student's best
- 1:21friend. Absolutely not.
- 1:23In fact, let's be let's be clear, you're not their mate.
- 1:26You are their leader. You are more like a parent
- 1:30figure. You hold the boundaries.
- 1:33You set the tone. Yeah, you can still laugh.
- 1:36You can still dance around the room.
- 1:38You can still joke about how your coffee is the only reason
- 1:40you're still standing upright. But the difference is there is
- 1:44structure behind it, and you still have that boundary in
- 1:50place. OK, so you're imagining as
- 1:53parents, we have fun with the kids, but we also have
- 1:57boundaries. And that's the way we need to be
- 2:00as teachers. We are imagining that we are the
- 2:02world's best parent, however that looks to you, and that we
- 2:06are setting boundaries. But if you want respect, you
- 2:10have to give it first and you need to explicitly teach it
- 2:15because, and I'm going to say the thing that I really don't
- 2:17like saying, but kids these days, kids these days may not
- 2:21have had a really healthy role model that has modelled what
- 2:26respect is and looks like to them.
- 2:28So they're bringing with them what they think it is to your
- 2:32classroom. You need to explicitly teach
- 2:37what that looks like, feels like, sounds like in your
- 2:41classroom. OK, You can't just expect to
- 2:45say, oh, we are respectful in this classroom.
- 2:47Well, what is that? You need to teach them what that
- 2:51actually is. And that's on you.
- 2:55Now, I still remember back when we had the four clear school
- 2:58terms. Sorry, let me rephrase that.
- 3:00We have 4 school terms now. Three, we had three.
- 3:03And the saying used to go don't smile until after Easter.
- 3:08So that first term was broken up by Easter.
- 3:11So you'd sort of do a big chunk and then you have a little break
- 3:14and then you come back for the last little bit and then you
- 3:16have holidays. And the rule was you don't smile
- 3:19until after Easter. And I get it.
- 3:21The idea behind that old school advice was to make sure that
- 3:23your students understood the expectations before you started
- 3:27building that more playful, relaxed type of relationship.
- 3:31Now, I think we're sort of evolved from that a bit.
- 3:34We know now that relationships matter from day one, but the
- 3:37core idea still stands. Spend the early part of the year
- 3:42making your expectations crystal clear so that there is nothing
- 3:48that's assumed. There's nothing that's hinted
- 3:50at. It's not.
- 3:52Well, I thought I told them crystal clear.
- 3:56Kids can't read our minds. It's just like husbands.
- 3:59They can't read our minds the same as we can't read this,
- 4:02which thank goodness because Can you imagine what they'd see on a
- 4:06Thursday afternoon at 2:45 PM if kids could read your mind and
- 4:11you'll just sit standing there going, I just really wish it was
- 4:14Friday. Why is it not Friday?
- 4:15Or why can't you just leave? Imagine if they could read your
- 4:19mind and all of the thoughts going on in your head.
- 4:20Not that you should be having those thoughts, but I'm, I'm
- 4:23100% positive we've all had them.
- 4:26But seriousness, all of the steps that and the expectations
- 4:29that you're saying they need to be broken down.
- 4:32If you want a respectful classroom, you have got to teach
- 4:36them what that looks like. So that brings me to my next
- 4:40point of model, model, model. You want your kids to speak
- 4:44kindly, speak kindly yourself. You want them to take ownership,
- 4:49own your stuff too. You want them to listen, Don't
- 4:53talk over them. You can't say respect is our
- 4:58class value and then slam the desk when you're frustrated.
- 5:02You can't demand kindness from your students and then go and
- 5:06gossip in the staff room about how annoying Year 5 is this
- 5:08year. What you model is what you
- 5:12multiply. Even when the kids aren't in
- 5:15front of you, other people are seeing what's going on.
- 5:19OK so just remember that. Honestly the amount of PLS that
- 5:24I have sat in where there's the message like we literally every
- 5:29behaviour training that I've been to it's the same.
- 5:32You have to model what you want to see and respect starts with
- 5:38you. Then that's where you get into
- 5:42the gold part, which is when you can Co create with your class so
- 5:46you're creating it together. I always start the year by
- 5:50working with my students to build a class agreement.
- 5:53We talk about what respect looks like, what it sounds like, and
- 5:56how it would feel in our classroom if we were all being
- 6:00respectful people. They help us to write the rules.
- 6:04They help create the vibes. Then they'll buy into it because
- 6:07they've helped to build it. And yes, it means that it takes
- 6:10time at the start of your year. But that investment, it pays off
- 6:14big time when the mid year burnout hits and your system is
- 6:17still holding strong and all you need to do is refer back to the
- 6:21expectations that you've written together.
- 6:24It's all worth it. But in saying that, that means
- 6:29that when you set the bar, you've got to stick to it.
- 6:33So let me ask you a question. Do you have a clear response
- 6:38when students aren't being respectful?
- 6:40Because if you don't and you let that one thing slide today, it's
- 6:44going to grow legs tomorrow. And I'm telling you now, little
- 6:47things become big things when you just ignore them.
- 6:50So set your bar, then stick to it and be consistent.
- 6:56Kids thrive on consistency. I thrive on consistency, really.
- 7:01But honestly, you've got to have clear consequences when
- 7:06expectations aren't being met. But you can also have your
- 7:09rewards and your incentives because we all love something to
- 7:12work towards. I mean, personally, I love
- 7:15getting to work early because it means that I have time to go get
- 7:19a coffee on the way to work. It's a simple reward for me.
- 7:22It's a motivator. It works for me.
- 7:25It also breaks up our trip on the way to school because
- 7:28obviously my kids are with me and they have a bit of time, but
- 7:32that's it. It The same thing goes for our
- 7:35kids. Even just the small things of a
- 7:38Friday high 5, like where you have a kid of not a kid of the
- 7:42week, but a Friday high 5, like something that they've done.
- 7:45I had a class once and we would have a bunch of hand like hand
- 7:50cutouts and our high 5 was when people did nice things or you
- 7:55wanted to give someone a shout out, you would write it on a
- 7:57hand and you would put it in the jar.
- 7:58And at the end of the week we'd just pull one out and be like,
- 8:00oh, high 5 to Sarah because she helped such such go get the
- 8:04scissors out when we were getting ready for this.
- 8:06And then you just pull out some and you'd read them and they
- 8:09could be and not like it doesn't have to say who it's from.
- 8:12It's just a high 5 to that kid. And then they're like, oh,
- 8:15someone noticed me. Oh, someone did that for me.
- 8:18You could have a a game of class bingo or a compliment jar.
- 8:21Like all of those moments matter.
- 8:25And it makes those kids in that room feel special and important
- 8:29and like they are part of their own and they are their own
- 8:32little community and they all work together.
- 8:36So think about all of that when you are getting ready to start
- 8:40your year and you're in that process of building those
- 8:42expectations with your class and with your kids.
- 8:45That's what you're working on. Then you need to find your
- 8:49space. So your classroom is your space.
- 8:53You need to claim it. You need to use it as your space
- 8:57to create calm and it's your energy that sets the tone.
- 9:03So if you are a constantly negative person, your class are
- 9:07going to end up mirroring that without you realising it.
- 9:10If you are a reactive person, your class will become reactive
- 9:14too. But if you lead with calm,
- 9:18clarity and kindness, then your class are going to start to
- 9:22reflect that back to you as well.
- 9:23And it's not perfect. I'm not saying it's perfect.
- 9:26It's not magic, but it is so powerful that when you model,
- 9:29model, model, and you are doing everything in your power to be
- 9:33the best human you can be in front of that class, then they
- 9:36are doing it too. And it's going to be hard.
- 9:38I'm not saying it's going to be easy.
- 9:40I I'm still learning and I have been teaching for over 15 years.
- 9:45I have never had two classes exactly the same.
- 9:48I have never had a class where we've created the world's most
- 9:52perfect expectations. I have had challenges, I have
- 9:57had challenging students. You will have them too, but what
- 10:01helps is setting up these really clear expectations and
- 10:08explicitly modelling what respect actually is to these
- 10:13kids to then help us frame up our calm and orderly classroom.
- 10:18And we get to have fun. Because with all of those
- 10:21things, if the kids see that and they see that you care enough to
- 10:25put boundaries in place to keep them safe and to keep them being
- 10:28a learner and a friend and all of those things, it will bounce
- 10:32back to you tenfold. And they will try their absolute
- 10:35best and work really, really hard.
- 10:37Some of the toughest classes I have had when I was teaching
- 10:41high school, they, they would have their little windows where
- 10:46they would be amazing. And we worked really, really
- 10:50hard to get to that point. And I had to take a deep breath
- 10:54before walking into some of those classes, especially Friday
- 10:57afternoon maths lessons or the Friday afternoon PE session, I
- 11:02should say, when I would end up with most of my class back
- 11:04because they would have gotten in trouble or whatever.
- 11:07But then we would have that time together to really talk about
- 11:11our expectations and say, well, what didn't you do?
- 11:13What do you need to work on? Because this is, this is our
- 11:16expectation. What weren't you doing?
- 11:19These are the consequences. This is what happens.
- 11:21And then they, Oh yeah, that's right.
- 11:23I need to work on this, able to own it, name it up and work on
- 11:26it. So taking a deep breath, it was
- 11:31a lot. But this is your pep talk, my
- 11:33friends. You've got this.
- 11:36You don't need to be perfect, you don't need to be everyone's
- 11:40favourite. But you do need to be
- 11:43consistent. You do need to lead with
- 11:47respect. You do need to remember that you
- 11:51are in charge of the energy in your room.
- 11:53And when you feel like it's not working, ask for help.
- 11:58Lean on your team. Reach out to those colleagues
- 12:01who always seem to have the calmest classroom and ask what
- 12:06they're doing like this work is hard, but it is so completely
- 12:12and utterly worth it, so it's going to be something that takes
- 12:17time. If you are just a beginning
- 12:20teacher, you can't be expected to do this perfectly straight
- 12:25out When you get your first class.
- 12:27It is so exciting and you are still learning the same as they
- 12:31are learning. So you will get better each
- 12:34term, each year. And, and this is the other thing
- 12:36too, you can't just set up those expectations at the start of the
- 12:40year and expect that's done and dusted.
- 12:41You are going to have to revisit them every couple of weeks.
- 12:45Every term you got to whip them back out.
- 12:47They are not a poster that gets stuck on the wall and they all
- 12:51sign it or whatever and then it stays there.
- 12:54No, it is a living breathing document that you have to pull
- 12:59off and show them and talk to them and remind them and
- 13:03continually refer back to. Please don't just make it
- 13:07another glorified laminated piece of paper that goes on the
- 13:09wall. You need to be getting your kids
- 13:12to engage with it and rewarding them in some way, shape or form.
- 13:17They need an incentive of some kind, but that does not mean
- 13:19that they need to be given a toy every single day.
- 13:22I mean, seriously, talk to my own children.
- 13:25They have to work for a reward. They do not get to have
- 13:29something every single day of their life just because they
- 13:32made their bed. They have to accumulate and work
- 13:35towards a goal. So set those goals with your
- 13:38class. You've got those expectations of
- 13:41this is what respect is like. When we've done this, then we
- 13:45get this. OK, so set those things, whether
- 13:48they're individual or class or whatever they might be, you've
- 13:51got to have something that you can work towards with them.
- 13:56Again, this work is hard, but it is so worth it.
- 14:01So all right, my friends, that's it for today's episode because
- 14:06there was a lot of information in there.
- 14:08And I hope that you will walk away from this episode feeling
- 14:11inspired and clear and reminded that you are the leader that
- 14:17your students need. You're creating more than just a
- 14:21classroom. You're creating a safe,
- 14:24respectful, and thriving space. OK.
- 14:28And they're going to turn up to school wanting to be seen, to be
- 14:31heard, to feel loved, and to feel safe.
- 14:34If I said that, and if you are an educator or ATA or whatever
- 14:38else you are that works in a school, you are still part of
- 14:40this process just because you're not the teacher in front of the
- 14:43classroom. If you walk into any classroom,
- 14:45you then become a follower of those expectations.
- 14:49So you again need to model, model, model.
- 14:51That means that you might have to touch base with some of those
- 14:54teachers whose classrooms you work in and say what?
- 14:56What are your expectations? Because when I come in and I
- 14:59work with this person, I want to be able to reinforce that.
- 15:02So whether you've got school wide expectations or just
- 15:05classroom ones, whatever it is, we all need to be on the same
- 15:09page so that we can have that respectful, thriving school
- 15:12environment. Cool.
- 15:15So if you love this episode, please take a second to share it
- 15:18with another teacher, friend or educator who just needs the
- 15:21reminders. And hey, don't forget to
- 15:25subscribe so that you click the little bell and get
- 15:27notifications so you don't miss an episode.
- 15:30As next week's episode, we're going to dive into lots of
- 15:32different things. So don't miss out.
- 15:35So yeah, share this with a friend, remind others.
- 15:37And you are doing amazing, amazing things, in case you
- 15:41weren't told today. And you are loved And keep being
- 15:44aligned, keep thriving. And until next time, I will talk
- 15:48to you again soon. Bye, guys.
