- 0:23podcast feed. If you haven't done that yet,
- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28When you're ready, let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:43In John chapter 8, Jesus engages with a group of Jews for a
- 0:46fairly lengthy conversation. In that conversation He makes it
- 0:50absolutely clear, clear enough that they try to stone him who
- 0:54it is that He is claiming to be. I want us to zoom in on one
- 0:57particular piece of that conversation toward the end of
- 0:59the chapter where Jesus brings up the patriarch of patriarchs
- 1:03of the Jewish people, Abraham. Listen to verses 48 through 59.
- 1:08The Jews answered and said to him, Do we not say rightly that
- 1:11you are a Samaritan and have a demon?
- 1:13Jesus answered, I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father and
- 1:17you dishonor me, but I do not seek my glory.
- 1:20There is one who seeks and judges truly, truly.
- 1:23I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.
- 1:26The Jews said to him, Now we know that you have a demon.
- 1:29Abraham died, and the prophets also.
- 1:31And you say, if anyone keeps my word, he will never taste of
- 1:34death. Surely you're not greater than
- 1:37our father Abraham who died. The prophets died too.
- 1:40Whom do you make yourself out to be?
- 1:43Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing.
- 1:47It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say he is our
- 1:50God, and you have not come to know him.
- 1:53But I know him. And if I say that I do not know
- 1:56him, I will be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his
- 1:59word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to
- 2:02see my day, and he saw it and was glad.
- 2:05So the Jews said to him, You're not yet 50 years old.
- 2:08Have you seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Truly,
- 2:11truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.
- 2:15Therefore they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid
- 2:18himself and went out of the temple.
- 2:21Jesus promises eternal life to all those who would keep His
- 2:24word, to all those who would believe in him.
- 2:28This ruffles the Jews feathers. Abraham died.
- 2:31How is it that Jesus could promise something that not even
- 2:34Abraham had attained to? Of course, this crowd of Jews
- 2:37was missing the point. Abraham died in faith and so
- 2:42though his body was temporarily laid in the ground until the
- 2:44return of Christ, Abraham's spirit lived on.
- 2:47In fact, Abraham is so alive that he rejoiced to see the day
- 2:51of Christ. He rejoiced to see Jesus arrival
- 2:54to earth. This infuriates the crowd.
- 2:57How can this Jesus claim to have met or even seen Abraham?
- 3:00Jesus is a young man and Abraham's time on earth has long
- 3:03since passed. And now Jesus, very much on
- 3:06purpose, really drops the mic. He responds, truly, truly.
- 3:10I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.
- 3:14Now. If that phrasing sounds a little
- 3:16bit awkward or odd, it should. And if it sounds a little
- 3:19familiar, it also should. Jesus uses the I AM language
- 3:23that God used to reveal himself to Moses from the burning Bush.
- 3:27In other words, the reason Jesus has seen Abraham and the reason
- 3:32Jesus can confidently say that Abraham rejoiced to see his day
- 3:36is that Jesus is God himself. He is no mere man.
- 3:40He is the great I am, He is Yahweh, He is God.
- 3:44And there is no doubt that the crowd heard his intention loud
- 3:47and clear, because it is at this point that they pick up stones
- 3:50to try and kill him. This is either the.
- 3:53Greatest blasphemy? That a Jewish prophet can utter,
- 3:56or even more incredibly, it's true in this case, the one whom
- 4:02they were attempting to stone was not blasphemy.
- 4:05No, this Jesus is no mere man. He is indeed God himself in the
- 4:09flesh. So here it is, friends with
- 4:12Christ, making claims like these.
- 4:14There is no room for a neutral response to him.
- 4:17There is no way to consider him to simply be a wise leader or a
- 4:21good moral teacher. The Jews of his day understood
- 4:24it, and we must. If he is telling the truth about
- 4:27himself, then he is no mere teacher, no mere man.
- 4:30He is God and He is so. If you are sitting on the fence
- 4:36in your relationship or your response to Christ, it's time to
- 4:39get off. We cannot embrace Him half
- 4:42heartedly. We cannot sign off on some of
- 4:44his teaching and ignore these clear claims that He is one with
- 4:47God. Make him the Lord of your life
- 4:51because He is already the Lord of all.
- 4:53Submit to Jesus, the great I am today.
