- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. We're going to give you the three biggest
- 0:28tech stories that actually impact your business,
- 0:31your career, and your family life. But before
- 0:34we get into the Morningstar, we should probably
- 0:36touch on the weather. It is intense out there.
- 0:39It really is. Especially for the listeners up
- 0:40in the Pacific Northwest. Absolutely. Even here
- 0:43in Sacramento, we're waking up to areas of dense
- 0:46fog. It's chilly with a high of only what? 44
- 0:50degrees. And nationally it's much more severe.
- 0:53We're talking catastrophic flooding, landslides
- 0:55across Washington and Northwest Oregon. And then
- 0:58on the other side of the country you've got the
- 1:00severe Arctic air. It's dangerous wind chills
- 1:04hitting the Northern High Plains and moving all
- 1:06the way down into the Mid South. It's a very
- 1:08messy day for a lot of people. A very messy day.
- 1:10And watch out for that narrow band of snow from
- 1:12the Midwest into the Central Appalachians. A
- 1:16harsh welcome to Mid December for sure. Okay,
- 1:18let's pivot quickly to the financial snapshot.
- 1:21It's been a, well, a volatile week and it ended
- 1:24on a bit of a down note. That's right. And that
- 1:28dragged the whole week into the red for the S
- 1:30&P. Yep. down 0 .85 % for the week. And Bitcoin
- 1:57looks like some serious profit taking. sure you've
- 2:25got something cool from our sponsor, Old Glory.
- 2:27Exactly. Old Glory is the place for iconic music
- 2:30and sports fan merch. I mean, if you have that
- 2:33techie friend who seems to have every single
- 2:35gadget, this is a great idea. Maybe they need
- 2:37a classic concert t -shirt or some sand apparel.
- 2:40They have some amazing stuff. It's a perfect
- 2:42holiday gift idea. Just head over to OldGlory
- 2:46.com. That's one word. Alright, let's jump into
- 2:57the Morningstar. That's our SnarfleTech article
- 2:59report. And today's stories, I think they really
- 3:02define where we are with AI right now. an EO
- 3:31that basically argues these AI laws are too onerous.
- 3:35Onerous. And a threat to US global AI dominance.
- 3:39That is the phrase. And the administration isn't
- 3:58just asking nicely. This EO has some very aggressive
- 4:02enforcement mechanisms built in. Two of them,
- 4:04right? Two of them. The first one is legal. But
- 4:33the second prong of the attack might be even
- 4:35more powerful. It's financial. The E .O. tasked
- 4:39Commerce Secretary Ludnick with figuring out
- 4:42if states with, quote, unfavorable A .I. laws
- 4:45could lose federal funding. And we're not talking
- 4:47about a small amount of money here. No, we're
- 4:49talking about major infrastructure programs.
- 4:53Specifically, they're threatening to withhold
- 4:55rural broadband funding from the BEAD program.
- 4:59The Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program.
- 5:02For states trying to close that digital divide,
- 5:05losing billions in BID funding is an existential
- 5:08threat. It sounds like the administration is
- 5:10just putting speed for Silicon Valley ahead of
- 5:12any kind of public safety concerns. But this
- 5:14has caused some really interesting backlash.
- 5:16It has. From conservative, prominent Republicans
- 5:19like Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Josh Hawley.
- 5:23They're criticizing the EO because it goes against
- 5:25that traditional GOP value of states' rights.
- 5:28And they're pointing out what the public is worried
- 5:30about. Exactly. The impact on jobs, the dangers
- 5:34to kids online, and the huge strain these data
- 5:37centers are on the US electric grid. It's a really
- 5:41complex fight that doesn't follow simple party
- 5:44lines. So the goal isn't really to win these
- 5:48lawsuits. It's more about delaying things. That
- 5:50seems to be the strategy. It's cynical, but very
- 5:53effective. This is where the story really connects
- 5:57back to your work. Policy researchers are warning
- 6:00that just the threat of lawsuits, or the threat
- 6:03of losing bead funding, It creates what they
- 6:06call massive legal uncertainty. It's a chilling
- 6:08effect. It's the definition of a chilling effect
- 6:11Think about, if the federal government tells
- 6:12you, hey, if you install that new security system,
- 6:15we might sue you. I'm probably not going to install
- 6:16it. Right, the risk is too high. So it discourages
- 6:19states from passing any new protective laws at
- 6:21all to get what you want, minimal regulation,
- 6:24without ever having to actually win in court.
- 6:26And this whole fight over the future of our country
- 6:28is happening while development is just exploding.
- 6:31Which brings us to our second story. The AMI
- 6:34arms race is in code red. Code red status, officially.
- 6:38Open AI just rolled out of GBT 5 .2 and it was
- 6:41a stunningly fast move. It was less than a month
- 6:44after 5 .1, right? Less than a month. And reports
- 6:47say this was triggered by an internal code red
- 6:49memo that would be linking directly to credible
- 6:51competition. Specifically, Google's Gemini 3.
- 6:55That's the one. They realized they had to move,
- 6:58and they had to move now. It sounds a little
- 7:00like panic, but what's actually new is 5 .2 really
- 7:04moved the needle for, say, a professional listening
- 7:07to us right now. OpenAI is calling this the most
- 7:10capable model series yet for professional knowledge
- 7:13work, and the benchmarks are, well, they're staggering.
- 7:15This is not just a small step. financial modeling,
- 7:39all sorts of complex tasks. And GPT 5 .2 is going
- 7:41to 70 .9%. So to translate that for us, what
- 7:44does 70 .9 % mean? It means the model is now
- 7:48beating human professionals in over 70 % of those
- 7:52tasks. And it's completing them 11 times faster.
- 7:5511 times faster. Is the definition of disruption
- 7:58pretty much everywhere this job there is? It
- 8:00is. We're talking about automating complex spreadsheets
- 8:02and building nuanced presentations. It can even
- 8:05handle multi -step projects. That's the agentic
- 8:08tool calling thing. Right, they can plan and
- 8:11execute a whole process, like read the tax law,
- 8:14draft a summary, and then make a slide deck for
- 8:17the CFO. All in one go. And they halved the error
- 8:20rates on things like chart reasoning, which is
- 8:22huge for finance and science. It is. This is
- 8:26the race to create the ultimate high -speed knowledge
- 8:28analyst for everyone. But all that capability
- 8:30comes with a higher price tag. It does. A real
- 8:33price increase, about 1 .4 times the cost of
- 8:365 .1. The Tatsu Pro model is now $168 per million
- 8:40dollar output token. $168. That's literally the
- 8:44price of intelligence. It is. And it means you
- 8:46have to be much more strategic about when you
- 8:49use the best model. I tested it on a high -level
- 8:51physics paper I was stuck on, and it explained
- 8:54it perfectly. Update from Fiji Symo, OpenAI CEO
- 9:18of applications. We did. during that same GPT
- 9:215 .2 briefing. Yeah. And it's later than a lot
- 9:24of people expected. She said, Q1 2026. Q1 2026,
- 9:27what's the holdup? Is it actual content generation?
- 9:30Surprisingly, no. The bottleneck isn't the content.
- 9:33It's the age of prediction and the compliance
- 9:35tech behind it. The priority is safety. So they're
- 9:38building a model to automatically apply safeguards
- 9:40for minors, anyone under 18. Exactly. And they
- 9:44have to be adequately sure they can identify
- 9:45teens, and this is crucial, that they can avoid
- 9:48the misidentification That's a huge PR and legal
- 9:52hurdle if you get that wrong. It's massive. And
- 9:55this focus on age gating is happening across
- 9:57the whole industry because of new laws and public
- 9:59pressure. Everything's connected when the stakes
- 10:24are this high. And then right alongside that
- 10:26safety update we got the strategic kicker of
- 10:28the week. Oh yeah. The massive new three -year
- 10:30licensing deal with Disney. Are we talking about
- 10:56AI -generated fan fiction, or is this something
- 10:58much bigger? It's much bigger. It's about market
- 11:00dominance. This deal gives open AI content diversity
- 11:05that their competitors just can't match. So if
- 11:08you can compliment their model to make a new
- 11:10video with a specific model kit? Well, a competing
- 11:14model can only give you a generic superhero.
- 11:16That's a huge strategic advantage. They're locking
- 11:19down the most valuable IP in the world for their
- 11:22model. That's the ultimate vote. It defines the
- 11:24future of media creation for the next decade.
- 11:28Wow. Okay, before we wrap up our Connecting the
- 11:30Dots, we need to thank our second sponsor, Scony.
- 11:33Scony, that's... Scony is the premium golf shoe
- 11:36store. If you're looking for high -quality, really
- 11:39comfortable shoes for the quarters, you should
- 11:41check them out at scony .com. And if you use
- 11:43my promo code SNORFUL at checkout, you can get
- 11:4615 % off your entire purchase. That's scony .com,
- 11:49and the code is SNORFUL. Alright, so let's quickly
- 11:52recap the three fixed ways that define the week.
- 11:55First, you have the escalating fight between
- 11:57the federal government and states over AI regulation,
- 12:00creating that chilling effect to stop new laws.
- 12:03Second, the just blistering speed of the AI arms
- 12:07race. with OpenAI dropping the super capable
- 12:09GPT 5 .2 just weeks after the last one, all because
- 12:13of a competitive code red. And third, it has
- 12:16a critical focus on safety, which is delaying
- 12:18adult mode until 2026, while at the same time,
- 12:22OpenAI is making huge strategic content deals
- 12:25with companies like Disney. All three of these
- 12:28stories, they really show that the future of
- 12:30AI isn't just about the tech itself. It's about
- 12:33the political, the financial, and the safety
- 12:35boundaries being drawn around it. That's a wrap
- 13:00on today's top stories. Remember, tech doesn't
- 13:03have to be complicated, and we're here to help
