- 0:00The B -Side in boxing. B -Side shit. B -Side.
- 0:04B -Side. And the B -Side. You got a B -Side.
- 0:06The B -Side. B -Side. B -Side. B -Side. The B
- 0:10-Side thing. This is the B -Sides Boxing Podcast.
- 0:19Oh shit. Alright, we ready to fucking do this
- 0:26thing? You ready to rock? Yep. All right. Fucking
- 0:35Boxing B -Sides. We're back in 2026. Joined by
- 0:40the one and only Saul. Hello, guys. What's up,
- 0:44what's up, what's up? Glad to see you guys in
- 0:45the new year. You guys can hear me. Back from
- 0:48hiatus. It's Josh. Yes, we are back. Oh, man,
- 0:56I saved this little bit of news. Obviously, this
- 0:59happened a while ago, but I wanted to give Josh
- 1:02a little bit of time to get something out on
- 1:06Crawford retiring, 42 -0, 31 stoppages, five
- 1:11-division champion, three -division undisputed.
- 1:15Retired the duck boots in Benavidez. You hate
- 1:18to see it. Duck Benavidez? You hate to see it.
- 1:29And Jake Paul. And Jake Paul. On a serious note,
- 1:37it's actually like, how good of a fighter do
- 1:43you have to be for that career to be a disappointment?
- 1:48How is it a disappointment? He could have fought
- 1:51more guys. He could have just fought more guys.
- 1:55Like, I'm gonna say, like, the top -ranked extension
- 1:59era, like, Jeff Horn until he fought Spence was
- 2:03not great. And that was his, like, absolute peak,
- 2:08too. Hey, he fought Kell Brook and he fought,
- 2:11uh... Sean Porter. Sean Porter. Okay, Sean Porter,
- 2:16fair enough, but, like, Kell Brook, Amir Khan,
- 2:19Mean Machine, Jeff Horn. The worst Benavidez.
- 2:25I think if he had just not signed the extension
- 2:31with top rank, he would have beaten Spence sooner
- 2:35and we would have gotten more out of him, which
- 2:39is he's good to watch in the ring. He was always
- 2:45a fun watch. Let me ask you this. I'm curious.
- 2:50Was there a possibility that he would have been
- 2:52signed by the PBC at that early on? Yeah. I mean,
- 2:56an American, like, all -action guy in the ring
- 2:59who is, like, the direct rival of your best,
- 3:03of one of your better guys. Did they ever send
- 3:08an offer out? I'm just curious if it's known
- 3:09that they sent an offer out. Well, he didn't
- 3:11even entertain, like, them sending an offer.
- 3:13He signed that extension with Top Rank at Lightspeed.
- 3:17He's like, I hate racism. sues his promoter for
- 3:21being racist, but how good is he as a fighter
- 3:27to have basically avoided stardom until the very
- 3:31end and still done it? So here's something interesting
- 3:37that I'm thinking about. If he had not re -signed
- 3:41with Top Rank, if he had signed with PBC instead,
- 3:45he would have been stripped of that WBO title.
- 3:48And we wouldn't have gotten an undisputed welterweight
- 3:51fight. That's true. It's true, but I feel like
- 3:55the profile of him fighting Spence ends up being
- 3:58the... Still bigger. Yeah, like he ends up moving.
- 4:02He probably fights Charlo. Like the... What was
- 4:06it? Jermall is the one at 154, right? Jermall.
- 4:10Jermall. He probably fights Jermall at Jermall's
- 4:13peak. He has a much stronger later half of his
- 4:21career. He probably still wins all those fights.
- 4:26It's just that we get to see more of him. I don't
- 4:29think it's a bad thing to have considered. We
- 4:32didn't see enough of him. Really. You don't think
- 4:35BBC would have put him with some tuna fights
- 4:37either? Yeah, but he still would have had the
- 4:41big fights. He would have had more big fights,
- 4:43and he would have had, like, instead of, like,
- 4:45Amir Khan, like, it would have been someone.
- 4:50His tune -up would have been, like, Danny Garcia.
- 4:53That's what I mean. Like, it would have been
- 4:54Danny Garcia. And at 154, it would have been,
- 4:59like, Lubin, or, like, it would have been, or
- 5:03even Castaño. He would have caught Castaño off
- 5:05a loss. So that's what I mean by, like, he could
- 5:11have accomplished more, and that's, like, he
- 5:15still accomplished more than most guys ever do.
- 5:18But... You think if he went to PBC, you think
- 5:23that would rival Mayweather? We would have seen
- 5:28enough of him against great opponents to be able
- 5:30to actually tell. I don't know how he'd perform,
- 5:33but we would have seen enough of him to tell.
- 5:36I feel like I've seen enough to tell. I don't...
- 5:39Because, like, skills -wise, he can definitely
- 5:45do it. It's just, like, how much do you count
- 5:49strength of resume? But you know what? We would
- 5:54have never gotten Mario Barrios as a WBC champion.
- 5:58Yeah, I think he would have fought Pacquiao,
- 6:00too. Pacquiao would have been in a wheelchair
- 6:04from... Crawford. Pacquiao was going to fight
- 6:09Spence. That's what I mean. That's what I mean.
- 6:12All these things. At that point in time, Crawford
- 6:14has already beaten Spence in this hypothetical
- 6:17timeline. Like, it's a whole... You think they
- 6:24would have made the Spence fight before or after
- 6:25his car accident? You think that was possible?
- 6:28Well, the car accident... I don't think it would
- 6:32have happened before the accident. No, it would
- 6:35have been after Porter. But it's still like it's
- 6:43not his eye falls out and the car accident and
- 6:46he's got a bunch of miles on the clock and he
- 6:49cleared out 147. It's just the car accident.
- 6:54Yeah. Which like he looked just fine after the
- 6:59car accident against Danny Garcia. Yeah. It was
- 7:04after his eye fell out that he looked A little
- 7:07diminished with Ugas. If Ugas had any killer
- 7:12instinct, he would have got him out. That's what
- 7:15I mean. Say what you will about Crawford, he's
- 7:20great, but I would have liked to have seen more
- 7:27of him against better opposition. Like I asked
- 7:31earlier, would you think that a run like that
- 7:34at PBC would have rivaled Mayweather's run? I
- 7:39don't think it would have beaten it. I don't
- 7:41think so. The longevity and the quality of opponent
- 7:44was just not there. Like Cotto, Marquez, De La
- 7:49Hoya, Pacquiao. I'll take those guys over. Yeah,
- 7:53Ricky Hatton at his peak too. It's crazy, but
- 7:58the thing is that I'm saying we would have gotten
- 8:01the C at least from an eye test. Because, like,
- 8:06I'm going to say, there's a big difference between
- 8:08Jermel Charlo and David Avenisi in terms of,
- 8:11like, owning them and, like, the eye test. I
- 8:17mean, honestly, you're 100 % right. I agree with
- 8:21you in the sense that if he got more fights,
- 8:24he probably would have been seen as even greater.
- 8:26Because that was Crawford's prime at that time.
- 8:29But you never know. I mean, he could have lost.
- 8:33No? Yeah, but the thing is that I respect stepping
- 8:38up and let's say he gets a fight at 160. He fights
- 8:45a guy at 160 and it's crazy and he loses. I respect
- 8:50it a lot more than what he actually ended up
- 8:53doing, which was garbage fights, Spence Canelo.
- 9:02Because even Madrimov is like, okay, sure, you
- 9:05fought a tight list at 154, but you also had
- 9:10active challengers at 147. I'm not saying that
- 9:14he avoided them. That's just the timing being
- 9:16wrong. I do know that Manny Pacquiao avoided
- 9:20Crawford for sure. I actually honestly doubt
- 9:24that. To be fair, Pacquiao was just not signing
- 9:28with Arum. If Pacquiao had won against Jeff Horn,
- 9:33we would have gotten Crawford Pacquiao. I don't
- 9:37know. I've seen the sources. I totally believe
- 9:42that he wanted nothing to do with them. Crawford
- 9:44is that good. But I'm going to say Crawford could
- 9:49have forced the issue by just becoming a star
- 9:52the way Spence did. We could have stolen Spence's
- 9:56chain. Yeah. So, again, fantastic career, but
- 10:02it could have been, like, genuinely legendary
- 10:04because he's... I deride Crawford a lot for his
- 10:08out -of -the -ring choices, but it's because
- 10:09he's so good and so fun in the ring that, like,
- 10:12all he did out of the ring was basically damage,
- 10:17like, how he entered the ring. You expect better,
- 10:21right? Yeah, like, I expect you not... Like,
- 10:24I expect you, like... You're a tight list at
- 10:27147. You go and you hunt out every other name
- 10:30instead of just waiting. And the thing is that
- 10:36just by accelerating the timeline, he probably
- 10:38ends up beating... He still beats Canelo. But
- 10:41it happens a couple years earlier. You don't
- 10:43make as many excuses. And now Crawford can actually
- 10:46capitalize on that by being the man. Well, ladies
- 10:51and gentlemen still listening to this rant. A
- 10:55good overview would be legendary fighter, great
- 10:59career. Like, his career is great. Like, how
- 11:06great do you have to be for a career where you're,
- 11:09what, three -time undisputed to be a disappointment?
- 11:16Not that. Fucking fighting David Avenisian. Like,
- 11:19how good do you have to be? to have wins against
- 11:24Errol Spence and Canelo and be a three -time
- 11:27undisputed guy, having started at 135, and, like,
- 11:35it's still considered, like, yeah, he could have
- 11:37done more. Like, it's not hate towards Crawford.
- 11:44It's just, like, this guy could have been, like,
- 11:49so much more. Because it's rare that we get an
- 11:54all -action guy who just has, like, skills for
- 11:59days. Happy retirement for Crawford. But I think
- 12:12Legacy, like, we're going to look back on this,
- 12:15and he's going to be a big, like, super talented,
- 12:18like... Super talented, but he can't scrape top
- 12:2310, top 20 discussions because of the strength
- 12:26of resume. I disagree with that, but... Yeah,
- 12:31me too. I would put him in the top 10, at least.
- 12:35It's a very dense all -time list. I feel like
- 12:43you need... Like, I'm going to say, like, three
- 12:47or four, like, my arbitrary number for, like,
- 12:50bona fide all -time greats to get into that top
- 12:5315, top 20. And I'm not saying, like, the 1940s
- 12:57guys who they, like, fight Hall of Famers over
- 12:59lunch. Because, like, those are very charitable
- 13:04inclusions. But I'm saying, like, guys like Hopkins
- 13:06who did it in, like, three separate decades at
- 13:09the least. I think it'd be Hopkins. Yes, but
- 13:16I'm saying in an all -time great way. Are we
- 13:18talking best or are we talking greatest? Depends.
- 13:23In greatest, Crawford doesn't scrape it. In best,
- 13:27absolutely. Put him up there. Greatest, I still
- 13:30think he scrapes it because of the three times
- 13:32undisputed. Jumping up three weight classes is
- 13:34no easy feat. It seems easy now after the fact,
- 13:38but you got to remember, we were all thinking
- 13:40that Canelo was going to win. That Crawford was
- 13:42nuts. I still think that's one of the greatest
- 13:44feats that's ever been, that's ever happened
- 13:46in the sport. It's like how people hold Roy up
- 13:50so high. Yeah. After you fucking fought John
- 13:54Ruiz. It's not like you fought Van Holyfield.
- 13:56You beat John Ruiz. John Ruiz beat Holyfield
- 13:59in the trilogy at the time, but that's besides
- 14:02the point. I don't know. I use Hopkins. It's
- 14:06like, there's, there's, there's gotta be like
- 14:07a, like Hopkins has a huge strength of resume
- 14:09in addition to like, the gimmick of being old
- 14:13and continually moving up. Hopkins is great because
- 14:18both of those. Yeah, it's just the strength.
- 14:22If he just stuck around, if his career was just
- 14:27timed differently, think of it. He'd still have
- 14:32Spence and Canelo, but you add Jermell, and you
- 14:35add a bunch of top 10 guys instead of top 30
- 14:38guys. Well, let me ask you this. I'm probably
- 14:43Pacquiao too. I'm curious. Where would you rate
- 14:48Roy Jones Jr. on this supposed list of yours?
- 14:51Out of curiosity. On like a greatness list or
- 14:53like a best list? Because if we're going best,
- 14:55like prime Roy Jones Jr. is one or two. Yeah,
- 15:00he beats most people. He's one or two. Like.
- 15:05Greatest. Yeah. But, like, greatest is such a
- 15:09hard one because, like, dude ranks, it's, like,
- 15:11such a combination of, like, greatest, like,
- 15:15your household name, you have a strength of resume,
- 15:18you have skills, like. Possibly your amateur
- 15:20career, too. Yeah. Ish. Like, I don't know, like.
- 15:24I don't know if I would count amateur career
- 15:27as criteria. I hope, like, Olympic gold medal,
- 15:30I guess, depending on. Yeah. Like, I'll say,
- 15:33like, the way I say Ali has all of those. Like
- 15:39when you think of like, like anywhere near the
- 15:41greatest, like kind of Ali level. Cause like
- 15:45he was the best first time. Like he was a cultural
- 15:50icon. He had the skills to in multiple and the
- 15:55longevity. Like it's a, it's a very subjective.
- 15:58It's more subjective than just saying best because
- 16:01best you go. like best you could just like you
- 16:08look at it with your eyes and you go this is
- 16:11this guy's the best but greatest is such a subjective
- 16:16thing but like like i definitely think crawford
- 16:20like especially because how dense boxing's history
- 16:23is yeah you gotta put people like johnny johnny
- 16:27sullivan sullivan up there like you gotta say
- 16:29yeah like i was gonna say like you gotta put
- 16:31sell you gotta put joe lewis there Even though
- 16:34you know in your heart Crawford beats his ass,
- 16:37this guy has probably the single most culturally
- 16:44significant win ever in his rematch with Max
- 16:48Schmeling. I was going to say Jack Johnson. Jack
- 16:54Johnson, too. That's what I mean. The history
- 16:59of boxing is so dense. that i think crawford
- 17:03not saying crawford is top 20 isn't like disrespectful
- 17:06but it's like his skills transcend whatever notoriety
- 17:10he may have lacked yeah i don't see it as disrespectful
- 17:15as like in a sport that has less of a history
- 17:19i agree somewhat All right, let's keep it rolling
- 17:24because we got another... We went a while there.
- 17:28Yeah, there's another piece that I want to spend
- 17:29a lot of time on. So really quick, we'll talk
- 17:33about them more in a second, but Inoue and Nakatani,
- 17:35they're aiming for May 2nd at the Tokyo Dome.
- 17:40So that's cool. Fucking Jaime Munguia passes
- 17:46on fighting Osles Iglesias for the IBF title.
- 17:52Like, you expected this because, like, I'm going
- 17:55to be real. I watched – I actually – I thought
- 17:58Osles was, like, one of those, like, Ajit Kabayal,
- 18:01like, me – like, I'm just trying to be different
- 18:03picks. I want to be the first on the train. Yeah,
- 18:07like, I just want to be different because if
- 18:09I'm wrong, I just say I try. Like, it was a risk,
- 18:12right? Yeah. But, like, no, this guy actually
- 18:15has – this guy is kind of crazy for 168. Mm -hmm.
- 18:19But he's also not... He won't attract enough
- 18:26numbers yet. You assume that Munguia, his chin's
- 18:30been cracked, his skills have always been limited.
- 18:35You want one more fight against someone huge.
- 18:41I personally think that if moved right, he can
- 18:45become... a decently known guy within the sport.
- 18:49Not maybe with the sports community in general,
- 18:52but within the sport. Just on skills and if he
- 18:56keeps fighting, absolutely. But I am going to
- 18:59say that if you're Munguia, you don't want to
- 19:03run into that right now because you're basically
- 19:05going to get your ass kicked in a Montreal casino
- 19:10for pennies. No, I think Iglesias is becoming
- 19:18one of Turkey's fucking pets. Oh, I know, but
- 19:23his last five fights have been in Quebec. You
- 19:29said that Iglesias is being moved by Turkey?
- 19:33How is that? No, I think I'm... Wasn't his last
- 19:40card fucking a... He beat Shishkin in Montreal.
- 19:45Okay, then never mind. I mixed it up. Never mind.
- 19:48No, he's been fighting under... He's been on
- 19:50Eye of the Tiger cards. Yeah. I figure, like,
- 19:54it's going to go to purse bids. Goldenboy isn't
- 19:56going to be able to afford it, so it's going
- 19:58to end up being Eye of the Tiger that picks it
- 20:01up. So... Well, I don't think he's not even a
- 20:06Goldenboy anymore. I think he's still a top rank.
- 20:08Yeah. So I'm saying, like, if you're Munguia,
- 20:13you avoid that fight. Like, you don't. Well,
- 20:18I mean, that's a high risk, pretty low reward.
- 20:21Low reward. Because the thing is that, like,
- 20:22Iglesias is in that spot where, like, if Munguia
- 20:25wins, oh, he's been exposed. Yeah. And if Iglesias
- 20:29wins, Munguia gets none of the benefit. He's
- 20:32just, especially, like, all, like, really what
- 20:37we remember isn't even the Canelo loss. We remember
- 20:39Saras putting him out to pasture and him having
- 20:42to use steroids to win. Exactly. A lackluster
- 20:45win at that. A very lackluster win. On the IBF
- 20:53rankings, Iglesias is first. The second slot
- 20:58is empty. Third is Canelo, who also ducked Iglesias.
- 21:03Fourth is Munguia. Canelo's not on the timeline.
- 21:08We don't even know if Canelo's coming back. They
- 21:11say he's back in training. Yeah, but for what?
- 21:16Circus show fights or real? Probably against
- 21:19Jake Paul. Nothing legit. That's what I mean.
- 21:23Iglesias is a legit guy, I fear. If Canelo comes
- 21:28back, it's going to be against someone like Shiraz.
- 21:30It's going to be a British guy. Shiraz is busy,
- 21:32though, with Pacheco. I mean, Canelo's saying
- 21:38he's going to come back in September. He's not
- 21:39going to come back in May. Yeah, we'll see what
- 21:45it's against, but the point is that Iglesias
- 21:47wants that title now because he's 28. You want
- 21:52to maximize your prime. Iglesias is going to
- 21:55get that title no matter what. He's going to
- 21:56get all the titles if he can. But you don't want
- 21:59to stall in making the fight. You want that title
- 22:01now, and he's in his prime. I mean, there's also
- 22:05William Skoll, but I don't think they fucking
- 22:06order that around. Skoll is at 10th. After Munguia
- 22:12is... I'm just going to go down the rankings.
- 22:14Yeah, is Shiraz, Troy Williamson, whatever. It's
- 22:19probably going to be Troy Williamson. Because
- 22:22the way you can do it, because Eye of the Tiger,
- 22:25they just take a cut. They don't really care
- 22:28that much about, like, you're my fighter, you're
- 22:30my fighter. They just keep taking a cut. So what
- 22:35would happen is... Send him over to the UK to
- 22:38fight Troy Williamson for a title on a match
- 22:41or wonder card of some kind or Saudi. Eddie signs
- 22:44him. And then from there, you carry on. That's
- 22:52the most likely option. I see that title fight
- 22:54happening on a real season card. Yeah, like it's
- 22:56going to be like a way like you take one of the
- 22:58British guys that Eddie has that are ranked.
- 23:01Like Troy Williamson right there. You. You put
- 23:06him up, Eddie signs him, either Tiger's pretty
- 23:09content to keep cashing checks slash keeping
- 23:11him busy in Quebec, especially if he has that
- 23:14world title. You go to one of the casinos in
- 23:18Quebec and go like, yeah, we have a world title
- 23:20fight. You'd be surprised how it fills in. When
- 23:24they had better be fighting Marcus Brown, it's
- 23:26pretty cool. I don't know. I'm pretty sure that...
- 23:34if Munguia's not going to fight him, it's got
- 23:35to be someone like Troy Williamson. Because Troy
- 23:37Williamson, that seems like the type of guy that
- 23:40will take that fight. Because, I mean, if it's
- 23:44no one else, it's going to be, you know, they're
- 23:46giving him a shot. Who else is going to give
- 23:47him a shot, you know? I did see a bit of news
- 23:51that Troy Williamson might be looking to defend
- 23:54his EBU title instead. Yeah, but if the IBF mandates
- 23:59it, he's going to... I don't see why he wouldn't
- 24:02take it, but... Like, he's sitting on the EBU
- 24:06belt until he gets a title shot, like what Avanesian
- 24:09did twice. They just, like... Because there's
- 24:18no reason, like, he's bad enough to lose to any
- 24:20of those guys at the European level. But, um...
- 24:26Who knows? Who knows? I hope he gets the fight
- 24:30soon. I don't want to waste much time, especially
- 24:34now that Crawford say what you will about him
- 24:37not faking any defenses. At least he's letting
- 24:39the division move. Let's keep it moving. He only
- 24:46fought once last year, I believe. And the year
- 24:50before that, I think he only fought twice. You
- 24:58also got to get some activity, too, because one
- 24:59fight a year at your prime age like that ain't
- 25:05going to work out. He had four fights in 2024
- 25:08and then one fight in 2025. Oh, he had four fights
- 25:12in 2024? Yes. Oh, okay. But only one fight last
- 25:18year, which is not good. Yeah. All right. So,
- 25:25yeah, Munguia. Quack, quack. So we came across
- 25:29this excellent write -up. It was about the National
- 25:34Combat Sports Summit. Yes, I did see this article.
- 25:39Man, we got some good stuff out of this. Jack
- 25:42Reese, apparently since he retired from refereeing.
- 25:46Fucking finally, by the way. He was kind of like
- 25:50the head or the keynote speaker or something
- 25:54for this. Let's see. Some of the key takeaways
- 25:59I got out of it from Jack Reese. His words. We
- 26:04got to get rid of the old thinking and revitalize
- 26:07the manuals. In the Tank Davis versus Lamont
- 26:12Roach fight, we couldn't find it written anywhere
- 26:15that when you take a knee voluntarily, it's a
- 26:18knockdown. It's always been the policy most everybody
- 26:23always used, but now it's in writing. Man, that
- 26:34kind of made me mad again about that fucking
- 26:37fight. Still gets under my skin. I watched Lamont
- 26:42Rocher's cruise last night. I was thinking about
- 26:44Lamont Rocher's plight. Thank you. I have a funny
- 26:50anecdote because I did end up being right that
- 26:53it was something weird that there was nothing
- 26:55in paper to handle it with. I ended up being
- 27:02proven right about inadequate training or standards
- 27:05for judging and refereeing that need to be updated.
- 27:08I ended up being proven right here. But I have
- 27:10a story, and it's lacrosse related, but it ends
- 27:13up being the same principle. So in lacrosse,
- 27:18there's regulations on how the stick is to be
- 27:21constructed and everything. Like stick length,
- 27:27how wide it has to be, how long the strings are,
- 27:29a lot of things. But it didn't have trick construction.
- 27:33That rule was created when at a national championship,
- 27:37a stick check was called on a midfielder who
- 27:40had a stick that the shaft was a paint roller.
- 27:45So like you click the button and it extends itself
- 27:47to play defense. And then you click the button
- 27:49again and it like folds back in to a short length
- 27:53one to play offense. And it was something like
- 27:57so weird and not in the rules that technically
- 28:00they had to let it fly for that national championships.
- 28:03But then very next year it was in paper trick
- 28:05instruction. And it's a very, very similar thing
- 28:10here. But it's something so fundamental that's
- 28:13been used for years. Yeah, it was the de facto
- 28:15rule. Yeah, but it wasn't a rule. So, like, that's
- 28:22the thing. So, like, you get a guy, like, especially
- 28:25because, like, say what you will about Steve
- 28:26Willis, he's always had pretty normal fights.
- 28:30Yeah. Like, when guys are taking knees, it's
- 28:32because they're being folded by body shots. It's
- 28:37like he hasn't had, like, a hard night's work.
- 28:39So, again, like... I'm glad it's in paper and
- 28:43I'm glad the sport is taking steps to consider
- 28:45this type of thing and scoring as well. It makes
- 28:49the sport better. Yeah. Because again, like it's
- 28:52not, oh, that'll never happen. It did happen.
- 28:58One, two other points from, or one point more
- 29:02from Jack Reese was his words. We sanction competitive
- 29:06bouts. When the bout is no longer competitive,
- 29:09we get the guy out of there. Yesterday's solutions
- 29:12don't solve today's problems. Don't confuse activity
- 29:15with effectiveness. So there looks like they're
- 29:22going to be pulling the plug a little bit quicker.
- 29:27Another one, the push, the summit. One of the
- 29:33key pieces was the push to eliminate 10 -10 rounds,
- 29:37even in ultra -competitive or if there's no action
- 29:42in the round. And Jack Reese called 10 -10 scoring
- 29:47unacceptable. The head of the California State
- 29:51Athletic Commission said, if you score 10 -10
- 29:54rounds, don't expect a call from us ever again.
- 29:57Good. Like... 10 -10 rounds is something that,
- 30:02like, if you're a teenager watching boxing and,
- 30:06like, you don't really know what's going on,
- 30:07you do. Not as a professional judge judging a
- 30:12world title fight. Or British judge. Yeah, they're
- 30:16notorious. That's, like, honestly, I interpreted
- 30:19that as Jack Rees, like, basically taking a jab
- 30:24at how they run things in the UK. Yeah, probably.
- 30:29Because it's pretty bad. So the move to ax 10
- 30:36-10 rounds, which is a good thing. Another thing
- 30:39was the Association of Boxing Commissions. They
- 30:44want judges to more liberally award 10 -8 rounds
- 30:50in cases when a fighter decisively wins a round.
- 30:54That was something I had mentioned some years
- 30:56ago when we were talking about shitty draws or
- 31:00bad scoring in general. Is that a possibility?
- 31:04And everyone that I had talked to at the time
- 31:07was pretty against it. But it looks like that's
- 31:11the direction they're going anyway. I don't know.
- 31:15Not sure how I feel about this one. It needs
- 31:19to be a very strict on -paper criteria because
- 31:22decisively wins a round is so vague. Right. Like,
- 31:27I think visibly hurt is a good one. Yeah, if
- 31:34they're buzzed. But, like, borderline, baseline
- 31:37criteria, right? Like, without, like, if you
- 31:40just want to put it in simple words, you go...
- 31:47You go visibly hurt. Spends whole round against
- 31:52ropes. Right? Or if they throw no punches and
- 31:58the other person does. Inactivity. See, that's
- 32:01what I mean. You need a table of officials to
- 32:04sit around and spitball scenarios in which it
- 32:08would apply. Because if you just get decisively
- 32:11one... you're going to end up with a... That's
- 32:14going to open for corruption. Yeah, exactly.
- 32:16It's going to backfire because you're going to
- 32:18say, oh, he decides... Like, literally, Cruz
- 32:20Roach. You can say, oh, Cruz decisively won that
- 32:23round because you didn't get an angle where you
- 32:26saw Roach catching and shooting. Mm -hmm. Right?
- 32:30And that ends up being a 10 -8 instead of, like,
- 32:33a 10 -9 that's shaded one way. 100 % agree. I
- 32:37mean, honestly, I agree with all you guys have
- 32:39taken. I honestly think there's a lot of... downsides
- 32:41a lot of uh cons versus pros i think uh one thing
- 32:46though that i think it can you know inspire is
- 32:49a little more activity in fights you know you
- 32:54like you know sometimes in the beginning a couple
- 32:55rounds where there's only one guy throwing another
- 32:58guy's kind of one of the examples that they used
- 33:01was uh the katie taylor amanda serrano rematch
- 33:04the first round specifically where Like, I think
- 33:08Katie Taylor landed the only punch of the round.
- 33:12So that was one of the examples they were using
- 33:15for, like, decisive 10 -8s or eliminating 10
- 33:19-10s. But you see right there, if the fighters
- 33:24knew that they could get a 10 -8 round and not
- 33:26just be one round behind, but be two, that could
- 33:29inspire more action in the fights, which, I mean,
- 33:31can't be good in a sense. Yeah, the 1010 thing,
- 33:38this is only for this national summit was for
- 33:41obviously for the for Americans. So I think Suleiman,
- 33:47the WBC guy, he was sponsored by the WBC. OK,
- 33:51so, yeah, he was there and he was saying he wants
- 33:54like these measures that they talked about to
- 33:56be taken to the UK as well. Instant replay and
- 34:00getting video replay the correct cards before
- 34:03they get officially submitted were some points
- 34:05I saw. Yes. That, like, they amend every issue
- 34:10I've brought up with judging in this sport. Being
- 34:14able to actually see the fight, not just from
- 34:17an obstructed angle, will fix so much judging.
- 34:21And the thing is that, like, when... Like, it
- 34:24will make corruption obvious when it occurs.
- 34:27Mm -hmm. It's not... Because, like, here we'll
- 34:31get bad cards, and then you'll just have to be
- 34:33like, well... If you see the fight with the ropes
- 34:39in the way, equipment in the way, cameramen in
- 34:42the way, from one angle, you can get it from
- 34:44there. It's not even like you're coping with
- 34:51a result. That's just how boxing is. Have you
- 34:56ever had ringside seats to any kind of fight?
- 34:59Even in amateurs. Even the amateurs, the judges
- 35:02are worse. In the amateurs, the judges have it
- 35:05even worse because there's moving parts right
- 35:08next to you because they've got to get fight,
- 35:09fight, fight, fight, fight done. And then some
- 35:13of them just referee the fight or are about to
- 35:16referee the next fight. They get tired. That
- 35:19happens in the UK. It's something that, at the
- 35:25very least, I'm not saying... Ostensibly, we
- 35:28need more training and more officials, but that's
- 35:30not going to happen, as in any sport. But these
- 35:34safeguards to basically improve how these officials
- 35:40conduct their business are so sorely needed because,
- 35:45again, we're in a digital age. WBC also mentioned
- 35:51that they're going to expand their use of the
- 35:54five -judge panel. I don't mind that because,
- 35:58again, the larger the sample size, the easier
- 36:03it is to get an accurate result. Right. Maybe
- 36:06you have one bad judge versus four good judges.
- 36:09Yeah. Like four judges overrule one bad judge.
- 36:12But different views of the fight, you get a more
- 36:15accurate picture. It's like even three judges
- 36:19with a good view of the fight versus two who
- 36:21may have not. It's harder to pay off five judges
- 36:24if we're going to go that route. that too and
- 36:28um like eventually like with the five judge system
- 36:32it's so awkward to fit them around the ring that
- 36:35they're like venues are going to have to give
- 36:38them what basically amounts to a little booth
- 36:40oh i've been i've been saying that shit for fucking
- 36:43years give at least one of them a booth off to
- 36:47the side yeah the thing is that like there's
- 36:50only four sides so you either put two on one
- 36:52side and now it's unbalanced or you have to do
- 36:55the booth idea and now that's what i mean like
- 36:59the summit was like super like i get to be like
- 37:02i told you so i told you so this is how this
- 37:06is how we fix it this is like but the the part
- 37:09that i'm not even i'm more content with the fact
- 37:12that they're fixing it rather than just them
- 37:14pointing out problems yeah if they pointed out
- 37:18the problems like you're aware of it you're not
- 37:19fixing it which is like sure i'm right but this
- 37:22is ridiculous it's worse if they were to just
- 37:26point it out and not do anything i would say
- 37:28it'd be worse exactly i could put a problem not
- 37:31fix it that's obvious exactly uh last bit uh
- 37:36this is uh one of like towards the end of the
- 37:39summit one of uh jack reese's Quotes, we've got
- 37:43to get them out of there when they are no longer
- 37:46competitive. Activity does not mean competitiveness.
- 37:50As a referee, as a doctor, you need to realize
- 37:53this long before the fans realize it. Fighters
- 37:56don't like that. And we know father trainers
- 38:00seem to never throw the towel in on their sons.
- 38:04And the sons never quit in front of their fathers.
- 38:07But we get to send the guy home to his family.
- 38:12I agree with this because, like, there's literally
- 38:16one exact clip that I will point out as this.
- 38:23It's the, if you ever watched the ringside footage
- 38:26of Gabe Rosado against Golovkin. Oh, Jesus. That's
- 38:31the fight where I'll point about, like, this
- 38:33is completely necessary. Because this old man
- 38:36doesn't throw in the towel and it's this cut
- 38:38man who goes like, dude, your son's going to
- 38:40die out there and ends up throwing in the towel.
- 38:42It's like a whole discussion ringside. And I
- 38:45feel like that alone shows it, like demonstrates
- 38:49the point being made there. But yeah, this article
- 38:57was, I got it from Boxing Scene. I highly recommend
- 39:00everybody to check it out. There's a lot of good
- 39:03stuff in there. Let me see. I'm going to put
- 39:08my notes in here really quick before we get to

- 41:48Fucking recaps. We're going back a little bit
- 41:52of ways. To December 27th, where we had the Knight
- 41:58of the Samurai, ring card number 5. Too quickly,
- 42:03Reito Tsutsumi knocks out Leobardo Quintana in
- 42:074. It was a nice win. And Erickson Garcia spoils
- 42:14the all -Japanese win party by getting a close
- 42:18decision over Taiga Imanaga. Co -main event,
- 42:23Junto Nakatani gets a UD over Sebastian Hernandez
- 42:26in his debut at Super Bantamweight. The chatter
- 42:32online was a lot of people were disappointed
- 42:34with Nakatani. Did people just not know who Sebastian
- 42:40Hernandez was? I don't even think Nakatani knew
- 42:44who Sebastian Hernandez was, judging by the frustration
- 42:47that came on later. I don't blame him. He's one
- 42:51of those... It's basically the turkey curse at
- 42:53this point that one guy severely underperforms
- 42:57on the marination. At least one guy severely
- 43:06underperforms or loses. I'm glad he underperformed
- 43:11instead of losing, though. Yeah. That would have
- 43:14been dire. I think they would have done the fight
- 43:16anyway. They would have done it, but I am going
- 43:19to say it wasn't as much aura. Around Nakatani
- 43:22at that point. Hernandez, more than anything,
- 43:26has a chin. I will say. Nakatani, you can see
- 43:35why Nakatani got frustrated and drained in later
- 43:39rounds. Because those first four rounds where
- 43:41he just... Most guys just kind of don't make
- 43:44it out of those rounds. Especially flourishing
- 43:48like Hernandez did. So, yeah, Nakatani could
- 43:54have prepared better to box, but also, Jesus,
- 43:58Hernandez has a head of stone. And that was a
- 44:02damn good fight, though. Oh, that was a fun -ass
- 44:05fight. Beautiful fight. Are you down on Nakatani
- 44:09versus Inoue? Does it lose a little bit of its
- 44:12luster because of this performance? I think it'll
- 44:17be more of a surprise when it's... It was already
- 44:19a niche fight for Hardcore's. So I think when
- 44:23it ends up being competitive, it'll be a pleasant
- 44:26surprise to a lot of people. One thing it doesn't
- 44:29is it humanizes Nakatani. This is true, because
- 44:33he was just killing guys up until now. True,
- 44:38and Inoue has had his aura cracked a little bit
- 44:42already. Yeah. And it continues to crack. Yeah,
- 44:47speaking of which, Naoya Inoue, UD over. Does
- 44:52he go by Alan Picasso? I'm pretty sure he does.
- 44:56I'm pretty sure he goes by Alan, yeah. Well,
- 44:58he doesn't go by Pablo, so... So, undisputed
- 45:07Super Bantamweight Championship on the line,
- 45:09and it was a fucking easy night of work in a
- 45:13way. One thing about Picasso is that he's tough.
- 45:21He was tough to stay in there with Inouye. I
- 45:24gotta give it to him. I think Inouye is... He's
- 45:30gotten a little bored offensively, if that makes
- 45:34sense. Like, the creativity has not been there
- 45:39his past two fights. I think he didn't want to
- 45:42risk another knockdown. That's true. But still,
- 45:45like, to be fair, like, there's Reckless. Like,
- 45:49he wasn't like Cardenas. And like, like, like
- 45:53I'm going to use the Fulton fights. The Fulton
- 45:54fight was like, he was still defensively sound
- 45:58and at his most creative. So there's a difference.
- 46:05Yeah. I think he just looked a little bored,
- 46:08which is not bad, but it is a little disappointing
- 46:13considering it's a concerning pattern going into
- 46:17a fight with Nakatani. Because if David Picasso
- 46:20is able to counter you, Nakatani is going to
- 46:24land a home run regardless of how wide the cards
- 46:27are. I see what you guys were saying. It's not
- 46:32taking a risk. It's a lesser opponent that he
- 46:35knows is lesser. I feel like against guys like
- 46:41Fulton or in the past like Donair, I feel like
- 46:46he's... want to take more risks because he knows
- 46:48the love of the opposition he had. Hmm. I was
- 46:55going to stop up for the Nakatani. Yeah, at first
- 46:58I was down on the fight, the Inoue Nakatani fight,
- 47:03just because, but yeah, on further review, Nakatani
- 47:07was alright. It's not the worst performance.
- 47:12I still think he's going to lose pretty easily
- 47:15or handily to Inouye. I just think, like, Hernandez
- 47:22was like, he's such a, like, you can't really
- 47:26get creative against Hernandez offensively either.
- 47:29He's basically just a wall that walks towards
- 47:31you. Like, I think with Inouye. Like, Nakatani's
- 47:38offensive creativity shines a lot better against
- 47:42an opponent who is offensively versatile compared
- 47:48to Hernandez, who versatile is not a word I would
- 47:54use to describe him in my life. One thing I can
- 47:59say about Nakatani is that this fight also proved
- 48:00that he will go to war to win a fight. Oh, absolutely.
- 48:03He dug in there. Yeah, he dug in there deep.
- 48:06Whereas guys will fucking quit. Like, you know,
- 48:08Ryan. Against someone like Rowley, you know?
- 48:12So, I think... I know, huh? I mean, I think Nakatani,
- 48:16if... When faced against Inoue, he will not...
- 48:19He will rather die. Oh, yeah. Like, that eye,
- 48:22like, it did not look great. Which, honestly,
- 48:27I feel like... I honestly feel like there's a
- 48:29slight possibility that fight might be in jeopardy.
- 48:33For May 2nd. For May 2nd. Might be a little too
- 48:37soon. I feel like for the war that Nakatani was
- 48:39in, I think, honestly, that he should take some
- 48:41time to recover. Five months, though? Yeah, I
- 48:46think, honestly, if they were to do it in September,
- 48:49might be a little better. Shinata's in shambles.
- 48:54I mean, you don't want to risk that fight, you
- 48:56know? Right. I feel like with that Minecraft
- 49:01Steve -ass head... That he fought? Nah, you're
- 49:06right. Fuck. And the amount of punches he threw,
- 49:10the amount of damage he took, you know, every
- 49:13time you go into a war, a little bit of you stays
- 49:16in that ring, you know? Right. So I think she
- 49:21should take some time to recover. I would love
- 49:24to see that fight in May, considering, you know,
- 49:26Cinco de Mayo's kind of going to be a little
- 49:28bleak this year. But we'll see. Anything more
- 49:36for Night of the Samurai? Not really. Bam beats
- 49:42both. Bam beats neither. We shall see. Alright,
- 49:49moving to a quick one. Wednesday, December 31st.
- 49:53Shisei Promotions at the Ota City Gym. It's the
- 49:56traditional fight festival that the Japanese
- 50:00do. There's a whole bunch of shit. There's a
- 50:03lot of stoppages on the card. But I'm going to
- 50:05be honest, I could not find a valid replay. So
- 50:09the only one I did see, Kazuto Ioka, he stops
- 50:13Michael Ordoskoidi in four. That was a good one.
- 50:19Yeah, it was a really dominant performance. Ioka
- 50:22looked good at 118. So the expectation is that
- 50:27he's going to fight Takuma Inoue. So that should
- 50:30be fun. Should be a fun fight. Oh, like, we were
- 50:37talking, and, like, Shannara had asked, like,
- 50:39about the kneeling not being an automatic point
- 50:44deduction, not being a rule. And she asked, how
- 50:49often do we even see people take a knee? Or the
- 50:53Scoidy took a shitload of knees. The one I think
- 50:59of is Donair, like, running behind the ref. That's
- 51:04the one I think of when I think of voluntary
- 51:06knees. And Saturday, January 3rd. Starting off
- 51:17the year. There was a lot of stuff on here. Ones
- 51:24that I wanted to point out. Alexis Ariza beats
- 51:28Ebony Bridges by decision. Yeah, that was a bit
- 51:32of a surprise. That was an upset, yeah. So congrats
- 51:35to Alexis. Juan Tapia stopped in seven by Henry
- 51:40LeBron. The MVP fighter, Yankeel Rivera, drops
- 51:46the ball to Jonathan Gonzalez. Fucking Holly
- 51:50Holm loses to Stephanie Hahn. Stephanie Hahn
- 51:55retains her WBA lightweight title. It was stopped
- 51:59by in the seventh. for a clash of heads, I think.
- 52:05It was a cut on Han's forehead. It wasn't even
- 52:10that bad, to be honest. I think they were bailing
- 52:13out Holly Holm. Yeah, because she definitely
- 52:17was tiring out at that point, I agree. She's
- 52:20also a little older. Yeah, she was clearly outmatched.
- 52:23It seems like she's been out there forever. Can't
- 52:28lie. And in the main event, Amanda Serrano gets
- 52:33the decision over Reyna Tellez. She was really
- 52:39going for the knockout, but didn't manage to
- 52:42get it. I think she's a few behind the record
- 52:46for most knockouts by a female fighter. So that
- 52:55was fun. Request? Yep. And that's it for the
- 53:04recaps. Not a whole lot. Not a lot. But things
- 53:08will start picking up soon. It's also a light
- 53:11weekend. There's nothing on Saturday. But we
- 53:15do have two cards on Friday, January 16th. Ass
- 53:20crack of dawn in the fucking morning. Early ass
- 53:24morning. No limit in Australia. A bunch of shit
- 53:29on here that I don't really care about. Liam
- 53:31Paro versus Patty Donovan. I think this is canceled
- 53:34because Patty Donovan got sick. Yes, to my knowledge.
- 53:40And Nikita Zu versus Michael Zarafa at middleweight.
- 53:45So that's fun. Oh, no limit special. Yeah. Put
- 53:49up or shut up for Nikita Zu. Definitely. Zarafa's
- 53:53a good test. Hold on, let me see if this is the
- 54:00same guy I'm thinking of. Yeah, Liam Wilson is
- 54:05on this one. What the hell kind of name is this?
- 54:09Rodex Piala? Rodex? That dude sounds like he
- 54:14fucks. He sounds like a Discord user on our fucking
- 54:19server. He really does. Yeah, he sounds like
- 54:22he fucks. He's Filipino. Well, there you go.
- 54:29So Liam Wilson, I guess. He fought Oscar Valdez
- 54:32a few times. So that's fun. And this card is
- 54:41honestly ass. Golden Boy at the Aquisher Arena.
- 54:49It's like all fucking Golden Boy prospects. It's
- 54:54the usual slop right here. The headline is Alexis
- 54:57Rocha versus Raul Curiel. I didn't even see the
- 55:02first one, so it's difficult. Apparently it was
- 55:05fun. Was it? Apparently. Okay, well. Apparently.
- 55:10Yeah. Apparently. Don't take my word for it.
- 55:12I don't want to be held responsible for it. I
- 55:17mean, I've seen highlights of it. It seemed all
- 55:19right. If it was a really fun fight, then everybody
- 55:21would be hearing about it. Everybody would be
- 55:23talking about it. They got this guy, Ruslan Abdullaev.
- 55:28I think he was an amateur standout. Yes. I'm
- 55:35just shocked Goldenboy still has prospects. That's
- 55:37the part that I'm like, wow, that's actually...
- 55:40Goldenboy has a decent... Yeah, this is a pretty
- 55:43filled -in roster, shockingly. Scrappy Ramirez.
- 55:50Scrappy Ramirez is always a good watch, I will
- 55:52say. I'm pretty sure Edwards is on the right.
- 55:59No, I don't think. I won't be watching. Yeah,
- 56:06but that's all we got coming up. One thing I
- 56:10will say about Golden Boy's prospect stable is
- 56:11that it's decent and it's better than the American
- 56:15stable that PBC has. You think? Yeah. What the
- 56:21fuck is PBC's? American Prospect Stable. Oh,
- 56:25Prospect Stable. Oh, yeah. I think you might
- 56:28be right there. Yeah, but that's all they got.
- 56:30That's their last hope. All right, let me do
- 56:38this. What if your best thinking day wasn't a

- 1:00:11Okay, excellent. It's an all night party. Parting
- 1:00:21words. Happy New Year, guys. Hopefully the box
- 1:00:24is good this year. And fuck Dana White. We'll
- 1:00:32be talking about him next time. I was going to
- 1:00:37say something similar to that. Let's go OG. Let's
- 1:00:43go Virgil. Hopefully he gets a title this year.
- 1:00:46Another year of Virgil not winning a world title.
- 1:00:50My favorite meme. Inoue Nakatani happens before
- 1:00:54Virgil gets a title shot. Japanese Super Bowl
- 1:00:59before Virgil belled. I feel like we should do
- 1:01:03a predictions list. What happens this year? Oh,
- 1:01:07we should start publishing predictions lists
- 1:01:09for important fights. Keep track. Like a picks
- 1:01:11league. Okay. Yeah, I can start keeping track
- 1:01:14of that. Bad Left Hook used to do that. And you
- 1:01:18know what? It would be good because then we could
- 1:01:19keep each other in check. Well, I was right about
- 1:01:22pretty much everything last year. We started
- 1:01:24the year. You're fucking pretty awesome about
- 1:01:25that. We could just use the Discord pick league
- 1:01:30for keeping track. That's true. No, but what
- 1:01:33I mean is like, oh, like if Boots versus Virgil
- 1:01:36is going to happen or Wilder fights Boots type
- 1:01:39of thing, you know, that's another thing I was
- 1:01:40talking about, you know. You know, I've been
- 1:01:42hearing a lot that Wilder Usyk is set for end
- 1:01:46of April. End of April in L .A.? Yeah, in L .A.
- 1:01:50Honestly, I like I don't want to see the fight,
- 1:01:52but I want to see the fight. I already told my
- 1:01:56dad if that happens, we're going to go watch
- 1:01:57that fight. I don't know if I'd want to travel
- 1:02:00for that. Depends on the undercard. I'll do some
- 1:02:05press. All right. Let's get the hell out of here.
- 1:02:08That's it for this edition of the Boxing B -Sides.
- 1:02:11We'll fucking see you on the other side of Nikita
- 1:02:14Zoo beating Michael Zarafa. Hopefully. Oh, boy.
