- 0:04Hello, and welcome to two girls in a pod.
- 0:06I'm Sharon, I'm Christy, we are once again.
- 0:10Super super excited to have another guest on today.
- 0:14We have are really, really good friend and we've been friends
- 0:18for ever. And a day I'm telling you Center
- 0:22Gutierrez. And one of the reasons we want
- 0:25to send Iran is because we feel there is such value in Reading.
- 0:30Young. And it's so important and
- 0:33Sandra. You are an Avid Reader that's
- 0:37putting it mildly. Would you say that?
- 0:43I would say, so yes. So let me ask you this, what got
- 0:48you started in Reading. I don't know readings.
- 0:51Just always been an escape from reality.
- 0:56Okay, that makes sense. Well, and, you know, I think so
- 1:02you know we talk about escape from reality and I think that
- 1:04sometimes, you know reality can, you know, whether you're feeling
- 1:08stressed, it could be stress about anything.
- 1:10You're right, picking up a book and reading it kind of can take
- 1:15you anywhere. You want to go sort of like a
- 1:17vacation for your mind. Yes, exactly.
- 1:22So but you're the type of reader who and, you know, because we
- 1:25teased you about this, you don't read one book at a time.
- 1:30No, I read books like people watch TV, most people don't set
- 1:35it on one channel and watch only one program.
- 1:39They surf through all the channels and they watch bits and
- 1:42pieces of movies. Usually, oh my God, that's how I
- 1:45read. That is such a wonderful visual,
- 1:51really because, you know, one of the things is, you know, we
- 1:54talked about reading the James Patterson book, so that kind of
- 1:57like a little book club fee and And so she you started it and
- 2:02you were reading along and then I started.
- 2:04And then you found another book. Yes, of course.
- 2:08I don't remember which one it was at the moment, but yes.
- 2:12Yeah. And so then I think it was like,
- 2:16we're back on track again. Then he found Ali's book then,
- 2:20of course, there's free books on Amazon.
- 2:23Yes. Is it going like a drug for you?
- 2:25Do we is there some kind of intervention that needs to take
- 2:28place? I don't think so.
- 2:31It's a healthy habit, right? Yes, very healthy happy.
- 2:36And you know, we were talking earlier and one of the things we
- 2:38talked about was the fact that you know, your nieces you really
- 2:42want to inspire them and encourage them to read talk a
- 2:47little bit about how you do that with them, how I Inspire them to
- 2:51read. Yeah, well, I don't know, have
- 2:54to think about that one but my one.
- 2:57Nice that's nine. She loves reading.
- 3:00Even the way she learned how to read was, but she loved playing
- 3:03video games. But nobody would read the what
- 3:05they words to her. So that's how she learned
- 3:08because she really want to play those video games.
- 3:11But now, she read the books, like really fast, actually, and
- 3:16she reads above her grade level. I think it's called.
- 3:21Yeah, and then there's my other niece that's lemon who totally
- 3:25hated reading and anything to do with school.
- 3:30I always told her, I don't care if you don't love to read but
- 3:36you need to learn how to read. So you understand things and now
- 3:42actually, she took the first place.
- 3:44She takes me to is the book I own the store.
- 3:47She loves to read now, mmm, that is so maybe it was just a timing
- 3:52thing when I think is that persistence to.
- 3:55And I think that, you know, I imagine that your niece is know
- 3:58how much you read. Oh, yeah, I always have a book.
- 4:01I carry a book everywhere well, and I think that's, you know, I
- 4:05always tell people that, you know, as adults we lead, by
- 4:07example, you know, and I think that, if you're walking around
- 4:10with a book and they see that, then that's kind of an inspiring
- 4:15thing for them. Now, that's a very true.
- 4:18Yeah. Yakking, that impression on
- 4:20them. Yeah.
- 4:21Yeah, looks even my nephew like, when I would tell my dad about a
- 4:26book, He was all intrigued and he asked me.
- 4:30What movie is that? I said, that's not a movie.
- 4:32That's a book. Oh wow, you must really do well
- 4:35in description. So, then he got into reading,
- 4:40and she likes to read, but he like Stephen King, and stuff
- 4:45like that. Mmm.
- 4:47You know, I have to tell you guys a story because, you know,
- 4:49Sandra in our friendship has given me.
- 4:51Lots of books. She has gifted me, lots of books
- 4:54which I really appreciate. She did give me one.
- 4:57I want to say it was a Stephen King book and I've Read a lot of
- 5:00Stephen King. I read a lot of Dean Koontz and,
- 5:03you know, just a lot of different authors in that genre
- 5:06area. In that book, I could not read,
- 5:08it was funny to me, because in my life of reading, I've not
- 5:12really come across a lot of books that I just sit there and
- 5:14say, oh my God, I can't finish this.
- 5:16Yeah well there's particular books that you can get into and
- 5:20not get into like for instance and rice, some of her books I
- 5:24just can't get into and there's some I really love she's a
- 5:28really good one to pick because You're right.
- 5:30There's like you liked Interview with the Vampire.
- 5:34Hmm. But then I Tried reading less
- 5:36data and I didn't I couldn't get into that the same way, it was
- 5:39different. Yeah.
- 5:41So it is kind of true and even though it might be the same
- 5:43genre, I don't know if it's the characters.
- 5:46I don't know what it is, but it will change that Dynamic of the
- 5:50book for me. Hmm, it could be the style of
- 5:53writing to. Well, that's true.
- 5:56And, you know, we've talked about this if I read a book and
- 5:58it's not grammatically writer, Or it just doesn't, there's
- 6:01things. Are he drives me?
- 6:02Crazy. Hmm.
- 6:05Oh yeah. Punctuation and grammar is a big
- 6:07thing is punctuation and grammar but the story has to content is
- 6:13important wrong. Sometimes it's the grammar is
- 6:16awkward. It's really hard to read a book.
- 6:18Yeah, that's true too. You know, it's even like
- 6:21character development to me is really important.
- 6:24It's kind of like watching a movie and they don't develop the
- 6:26character. You walk away thinking oh why
- 6:28was that character? Even in the Movie?
- 6:30Why I think that you don't make that association with that
- 6:34character. Then you can't, if you don't
- 6:36feel connected to the story in that way because you don't have
- 6:39a real good grasp of what that characters meaning is to the,
- 6:44the whole thing. I think it does impact you.
- 6:47Yes, very much. So did you take a lot of classes
- 6:51in college that revolved around reading?
- 6:54Well, because I have an English degree.
- 6:56Yes, I think that's important. To know people.
- 7:01Yeah, and also I took other literature classes that name
- 7:05pertain, like cultural ones and the cultural ones were more
- 7:08diverse. So you read a lot of different
- 7:11types of authors as opposed to just the set ones and then
- 7:16English course. Yeah.
- 7:17I think everybody in the English course, is kind of get the same
- 7:20ones. You know, those classic ones and
- 7:23things like that and I'm like, you I took some cultural ones
- 7:26which I just really, really enjoyed That's where I read.
- 7:31Bless me Ultima was in one of my classes.
- 7:34I actually read that in one of mine as well.
- 7:37Oh, really? That's kind of cool.
- 7:39Have you read that one? I read it but I don't remember
- 7:42it so well, it's one of those things.
- 7:45You read them a long time ago and and we even talked about
- 7:48that too. That sometimes you read a book
- 7:49and then sometimes when you go back and reread it at a
- 7:52different age and I think there's some in my lifetime that
- 7:55I would want to do that with. I I share and asked me earlier
- 7:59Is there like certain books that you remember, from when you were
- 8:02younger? I know, when like Middle School
- 8:05age or whatever I had read, one that made a big impression on
- 8:08me, and it was just a little fiction book.
- 8:10It was the ghost wore gray and I loved that book.
- 8:14And I will, you know, I'll still think of it sometimes now and I
- 8:18mean, you know, there's books like that my mom would read to
- 8:20me as a kid, you know, the Nancy Drew stuff and all of that.
- 8:24But I do Wonder we have one book.
- 8:27That was kind of passed through our family.
- 8:29It's called The Shepherd of the Hills and I really cannot
- 8:34remember too much about what that story is.
- 8:36I know that it has something to do with the Ozarks and that, but
- 8:40I remember I loved it as a kid and part of it was because my
- 8:43mom read it to me. She read it with voices, you
- 8:45know, like all the different characters and that.
- 8:48So I have good memory of that, but I don't remember really
- 8:51good, what the story is about. And I was thinking about that
- 8:53the other day, I might should go back and read that book again
- 8:57because it was, you know, like I said, it's one Has been passed
- 9:00through my family. You know.
- 9:02If you go back and read it, you're going to hear the voices.
- 9:04Your mom read it to you and probably, yeah.
- 9:29Times, it's kind of hard, you know what I mean?
- 9:32Or you sit there and say, wait a minute, that's the character in
- 9:34the movie, but it doesn't look like this one in the the book.
- 9:37And then you see the one in the book.
- 9:38So I don't know. It's just kind of interesting
- 9:41because you read a lot of books that are movies, right?
- 9:44I do well, if I have have read the book first, I will watch the
- 9:49movie but if the movie comes out first, I'm a less likely to
- 9:54watch. Wait, how did I say that?
- 9:57You're less likely to read the book after you've watched The
- 9:59movie. Yes, most definitely.
- 10:02Yeah because I'm like, what's the point now?
- 10:06And that's just my preference. And I always say, I got to get
- 10:09more details and, you know, they can fit way more details in the
- 10:12book. So I'm very much that person
- 10:15that will say what that in happened in the book.
- 10:20That can I have to be careful of that too.
- 10:23Because and I'm, they're thinking now, I'm just being
- 10:26over critical. They, it's a movie.
- 10:28They can't, like, Christy said, They can't fit everything into
- 10:31the book. You know what I mean it in from
- 10:34the back to the movie. I understand that but
- 10:37surprisingly you know where the project things sink.
- 10:42Yes. Is that it for the crowd
- 10:43dancing? That was an excellent movie
- 10:46because it followed the book very much.
- 10:50The only thing was the ending was a little bit different but
- 10:53it had the same concept so it still made it good if that makes
- 10:58sense. Yeah.
- 10:59And you really liked that book, and that's a wonderful, but a
- 11:04lot of people that I've talked to that have ready.
- 11:07They're like, but nothing happens for a long time and I'm
- 11:11like, well, I really loved it. I haven't read that one.
- 11:16And we haven't watched the movie either.
- 11:18So, yeah, so it's one of those that's on our list, I guess.
- 11:22Do you think we should read the book first or just watch the
- 11:25movie? I've been interested to know
- 11:28what you think about the book. Okay.
- 11:31That's kind of one of the things is because often we talk about
- 11:35books because books are kind of a really important thing.
- 11:38And it's like finding that book that just really grabs you, you
- 11:42know, and then it's or do you find that this isn't once again
- 11:46here Sandra. She gives me a book and I'm
- 11:48there like. Oh how cool is this?
- 11:50It's a laurel K Hamilton book and it's about the face.
- 11:54So I'm there like, oh, this is cool.
- 11:56So I start reading and they're like, oh, this is great.
- 11:59Then I Find out. It's a series.
- 12:01She does this to me people, she will give me.
- 12:04And then I'm there. Like, oh my God, I got to read
- 12:06it. So then I get to the, they're
- 12:08like, oh my God, this is so wonderful.
- 12:10And then, Laura K, Hamilton came out said, well, I'm not going to
- 12:13write write any more of those right now.
- 12:15It's a merry Gentry series because she went back to writing
- 12:18what's her other series? She writes Anita Blake the
- 12:21Vampire Hunter. Yes.
- 12:23And there's like 29 or 30 books right now.
- 12:26I think yes if I'm not mistaken. Yes, so she It's to do that.
- 12:30And I'm just like, why, why did you do this?
- 12:32But I follow her on Facebook and Mary Gentry's talking to her
- 12:36again, so, it sounds like she's going to write the final book to
- 12:40the series, which I cannot tell you how happy I am.
- 12:45No, because you get you there, such a buying into these
- 12:48characters and things. You know what I mean?
- 12:50And I think when stories written really, well, you are just so
- 12:55much a part of the story or that's how it is for me.
- 12:59Anyway, Well you know that's true.
- 13:01I think it's very true. Look at all the people that
- 13:04binge watch the series and things like that, but with a
- 13:07book, you can, you know, keep on reading.
- 13:09I know. It's so it's just, it's such an
- 13:12amazing thing for us. That's part of, you know, a big
- 13:16part of our friendship has been throughout the years reading and
- 13:21we talk about books. Yeah.
- 13:22You know. And we share books.
- 13:25So Sandra, how do you usually decide which book you?
- 13:29You want to read next? I know I go into the bookstore
- 13:33and I'm like, oh, this one looks cool and it's just, you know,
- 13:35never judge a book by it's cover.
- 13:37So how do you decide what is it that you want to read at this
- 13:43point of my life? I know they say don't judge a
- 13:47book by it's cover but the way I pick a book is I look for my
- 13:51favorite authors. I look at the titles if it's not
- 13:55one, I read have read. I'll pick it up and read it.
- 13:59Little bit inside flipped or whatever page inside, and if he
- 14:05grabs me, then I'll just buy it. So, when you stand sometimes, I
- 14:10even do that with authors, I don't know.
- 14:14And for me, a lot of time when I do that, it's more, the writing
- 14:17style. And yes, of course, I read the
- 14:20blurb on the back to see what it's about.
- 14:23And that has to catch me too. Okay, so when you say favorite
- 14:27authors, who are some of your favorite authors, Oh my gosh,
- 14:31there's so many. Let me see it.
- 14:35All depends, like you want when you need genre, what are you
- 14:39asking for? This is how much of a reader.
- 14:42She is just throw some names out there girl.
- 14:44You gotta break your authors down by genre, if you need to,
- 14:48that's okay. Well, of course, I can take or
- 14:55how do you say for Stephen King? It's a yes, and a no, depending
- 14:59On what the story is about. And if the writing catches me
- 15:04and the story, like he's another one of those kind of like, Anne
- 15:08Rice. I like some of them, but some of
- 15:11them I really can't get into agreed.
- 15:14Then there's Sarah Morgan. She writes like romance of
- 15:19course. Okay.
- 15:20And then a list of Valdez. She writes more in my opinion,
- 15:25like cultural, like he doesn't have the Latin culture.
- 15:28Does she not? Yes, she does.
- 15:31The very first book I read about her was that actually an
- 15:34advanced readers copy of Dirty Girls social club and actually
- 15:39when it came out I bought it and I reread it and there wasn't
- 15:42anything different. But sometimes I tell you an
- 15:45advanced reader copies that the story can change there might be
- 15:49grammatical error or such and such, you know, and actually
- 15:53she's going to have a new series which comes out in April.
- 15:58It's called the Jody Luna. The series and it's about a game
- 16:02warden. So she were I would say maybe
- 16:08yeah she tells right in the Latino culture or Latino culture
- 16:13but she also I would call her more like magical realism kind
- 16:20of hoping because there's another favorite book of her
- 16:24another book. That's my favorite called the
- 16:27temptation of the mutual. Neutral this vehicle.
- 16:32And that book is about this yellow, gal who's being watched
- 16:37over by kind of like boy angel. It's I don't know how to
- 16:42describe it, exactly. But it's a really, really good
- 16:44book. So incorporates a little bit of
- 16:47fantasy kind of into it. Yeah, kind of like, Marquez.
- 16:51Have you guys read him? Mmm.
- 16:55Yeah. Like, gosh, I'm trying to think
- 16:57what he writes but I can't think right now.
- 16:59Now I'm sure it was a book that you like to the one of the boy
- 17:07in Italy who goes on to be the opera singer.
- 17:12Oh yeah. That's the mentor is book.
- 17:14That one is cry to Heaven. Yes.
- 17:18Okay. Yes.
- 17:19She's the one. That's the real.
- 17:21One of my favorites is a really, really good book.
- 17:25Yes. That one's a good book.
- 17:28There's so many I can Think of which ones will and that's
- 17:32about. That's when, you know, you're
- 17:34talking to somebody who is truly a lover of reading it's because
- 17:37it's almost like you ask, the question and your brain gets
- 17:40flooded in. All you see as a whole bunch of
- 17:42author's names and not in order, and thanks such true.
- 17:47And you don't just strictly, read, fiction or that right?
- 17:51You read some other. No biggie.
- 17:53Yeah, I read nonfiction a really good one that I really enjoyed
- 17:57was a Danny Trejo. Oh look, I can't remember the
- 18:01full title, but basically it's about his life and it just
- 18:07explains so much about him and I'm like, wow, this is amazing.
- 18:10Because right now like towards the end of his book, He's a
- 18:14horse he talks about how he got into acting and want not a my
- 18:19opinion, it was like pure luck but somebody might have a
- 18:24different perception of that and he was in prison and he just
- 18:31told his story really but towards the end it was like this
- 18:36is really amazing because he actually founded some like
- 18:40programs for like recovery for addicts.
- 18:44Mmm, Yeah. And he also now has Taco chain
- 18:49of restaurants and stuff like that.
- 18:52Did you also read? Of course you read Dolly.
- 18:55You read Elvira. I know Yeah.
- 18:59Sandra Peterson. Yes, Elvira.
- 19:03His you like autobiographies to because you read Jackie Chan.
- 19:06Yes. Jackie Chan's was really good.
- 19:09I enjoyed that. I haven't read that one about
- 19:11that. Person that popped up, that
- 19:12one's good really interesting. Background talks about his
- 19:16upbringing, I read Ozzy. Osbourne's was phenomenal to
- 19:20just simply do the fact that he's so brutally honest, he
- 19:24doesn't lie everything he did. He just kind of puts out there
- 19:27which was You know to see where he started in that whole life
- 19:30and then where he ended up. And so I think autobiographies
- 19:35oftentimes really do have that ability also to inspire people,
- 19:40you know like with the book you were talking about even though
- 19:42he had this adversity of you know being in prison and all
- 19:45those things coming out of it and then giving back to the
- 19:48community all right and all of those things that are I think
- 19:52are really important. It was like what do we learn
- 19:56from you know, right from those Frances that we have and then we
- 19:59can share them then, maybe that Inspire somebody else, you know?
- 20:02Yeah, the kind and I'm going forward with it, you know, like
- 20:07these days, I tend to read a lot of like self-help.
- 20:11I guess inspirational kind of books and that, and I enjoy that
- 20:15the most right now. But I mean, I like reading some
- 20:18nonfiction and that, but I think that the books that I'm reading
- 20:22now, I just feel like that, they they have really helped feed my
- 20:26soul in a way, you know. Oh, so I just think that
- 20:29valuable everything is so valuable anyway.
- 20:31For many, many different reasons like you said, sometimes it's
- 20:34about a mental vacation and sometimes it's about getting
- 20:37yourself centered, there's just so many reasons.
- 20:40Well, I think that's the really cool thing is that there is a
- 20:44book for every occasion. There is a book for every mood
- 20:47that, you know what I mean? It's kind of like music to me.
- 20:50It's kind of along those same lines of because there's so much
- 20:53that you can get from them. And you know, I mean, we read a
- 20:56lot of Eckhart Tolle. You know, which, but we've read
- 21:00the secret. We rolled around about run Burns
- 21:03Burns. Just a whole bunch of different
- 21:05things like that Joan. Oh however you say her that,
- 21:09she's the nun who writes a lot of books, chidester she
- 21:12disturbed that was a really great read.
- 21:14And she's that is not a book that I typically would have
- 21:17picked out to begin with. She's a nun, I picked it out for
- 21:20her because I thought it was time.
- 21:22She learned a little Catholicism.
- 21:23Nope. I just did I read the back of it
- 21:28and I thought this is a book that I think if Christy reads
- 21:31it's really going to inspire her.
- 21:32Yeah and I really feel like it did.
- 21:34Have you read that Sandra? No I haven't.
- 21:38It's really good. She's a good author and it was
- 21:41really interesting to hear her perspective.
- 21:43Yeah and that's why I think there's a lot of those different
- 21:46things I'm going to switch gears just a little bit here because
- 21:49everybody out there who listens to our podcast, you will hear us
- 21:52mention Sandra often part of it. Because Sandra is who we
- 21:57vacation with and Christy and I were talking the other day, and
- 21:59we said, you know, fluffy has motto, Dean, you know, and we
- 22:04decided, you know, we don't have modified Dean, we have
- 22:07professors and ra, because you've been such an amazing
- 22:13friend to us and stuff like that.
- 22:14And and we love to travel. Yeah.
- 22:17But Center also travels with books?
- 22:20Yeah. And, and you didn't mention when
- 22:23we were in Amsterdam. I want in book store, and I
- 22:25bought Book. Yes.
- 22:26Yes, you did. She will find a book store
- 22:28anywhere and she will buy a book.
- 22:31Yep, that's true. Well, yeah.
- 22:34And you expand your mind so much.
- 22:36And even, you know, I think sometimes reading can go
- 22:39hand-in-hand with travel. Yes, you can do it while you
- 22:42travel but, you know, it just takes your mind to different
- 22:45places. One of the books that I just
- 22:47recommended to you and I know you read or was reading, was
- 22:50Josh Gates book Destination Truth.
- 22:53And how much travel He does in that book, it tells me which
- 22:58places I don't want to go to. If you have not read Destination
- 23:04Truth you have to read it people.
- 23:06But of course, Then There Are Places in there.
- 23:08It's like, wow, I need to go there exactly.
- 23:12He talks about what's really great about his book and if you
- 23:16haven't read the book, he does the series to its.
- 23:19You can find it somewhere. I'm sure.
- 23:21Netflix, whatever place, they how's it now, but it's really
- 23:25cool. Because even in his book when he
- 23:27writes, he writes about those experiences in a way, I think
- 23:32that you actually feel like you're right there with him and
- 23:36he's so passionate about travel. Yes.
- 23:39And I think when you read a book from an author who you can feel
- 23:43that passion come through, does that make sense?
- 23:47Yeah. Most definitely because it shows
- 23:50in their writing. It shows how they analogize like
- 23:54compare things. Things and they're like, it's
- 23:57like this kind of I don't know how to explain that.
- 24:01It's more like a feel that you get.
- 24:03Yes. You know.
- 24:05And it's true. And like I said, whenever we
- 24:08vacation was Sandra, we know her suitcase probably has half books
- 24:11for all. We know, I don't care if I don't
- 24:16carry at least. I tried to carry at least one
- 24:19paper back. That's not too big and my
- 24:22Kindle. Yeah.
- 24:24Because we'll be out in the Will and you'll turn around look and
- 24:27Sanders reading reading by the pool.
- 24:30That's true which know what we're good with, you know, it's
- 24:37vacation. You do it ever reset you on your
- 24:41vacation and force. I don't want to read it the
- 24:43Boost in the pool because I'm afraid, I'll drop it in the
- 24:45water and that's a no for me. No, because you're kind of not
- 24:50interesting but you have a thing about book is very particular
- 24:53about them, right? Yes, I am.
- 24:56Because day before yesterday I bought a book, I can't tell you
- 24:59the title right now because it's a new one.
- 25:01I just discovered, I haven't read it yet because I'm
- 25:04currently reading something else.
- 25:05But that won't keep me from reading it because I might start
- 25:09it in a while anyhow. I had bought it during my lunch
- 25:14hour at work. I came back and one of my
- 25:16co-workers. So I had bought a book and she's
- 25:19very much a reader as well, and she's always giving me book
- 25:22recommendations and whatnot. And She's like, look how Mike
- 25:30just look at her. Like don't touch my book and
- 25:33this like let me see it. And I know I probably offended
- 25:36her but they had just eaten lunch so I don't know what she
- 25:40has on her hands. So I said are your hands clean
- 25:44and I know she got kind of sad about it.
- 25:46She looked at her hands and she's like, yeah, they're clean.
- 25:49I said, okay, here you go. And I said, and don't break The
- 25:52Binding because people just open those books in right away.
- 25:56I can see that binding breaking and you know what, if it's your
- 25:59book great, but if it's mine, do not break that binding.
- 26:04And so she took the book and she was very gentle with it.
- 26:08But then I felt kind of bad afterwards but not too bad
- 26:11because it is my book of your priorities, definitely.
- 26:18Also even with your books, you don't bend the pages.
- 26:21You don't you know you always use a bookmark even if it's
- 26:25Receipt or paper bookmark. You even say you were a little
- 26:29disappointed because you had ordered a book from Amazon and
- 26:33when it came it was not exactly pristine.
- 26:36Well you know I ordered that run Rose run Dolly Parton and James
- 26:41Patterson book and everything looks brand new sets on once.
- 26:47I open the cover, you could tell whoever handled the book had
- 26:50grease on the hand and I'm not tactic talking like food, Kris,
- 26:53I'm talking like Greece home of Oil and I'm like I can maybe
- 26:57just try to read this. I try to read it but there was
- 27:00no way I had to get an exchange once again that really does Show
- 27:08Your Love of books because when we love something we take care
- 27:12of it. Yeah.
- 27:13Yeah true. I mean when I read for the
- 27:16crawdads thing I bought the size.
- 27:20That's not a trade paper size or mass Market was like the
- 27:23in-between, the baby. Like long ones, I don't know if
- 27:27you guys have seen those, their kind of Polish and they look
- 27:31like Mass Market, but the difference is their tallish, and
- 27:35they're smaller like that, but when I read it, I was really
- 27:40disappointed because yes, I did kind of break The Binding on it
- 27:44because that's the only way I could read it, but I didn't like
- 27:48break it right away on purpose. It was just as I read it.
- 27:51Oh yeah. Okay.
- 27:52And I'm like, oh my God, this is why I don't buy.
- 27:55By this particular size of book. Yes, that is very particular on
- 28:00that. I know that like if you have a
- 28:03certain series or whatever that you want to get, I know
- 28:06sometimes you look for because sometimes they're released with
- 28:08different covers and those kinds of Sleeping Beauty.
- 28:20It has a particular my box as a particular cover art on it.
- 28:25Huh, and actually, it's more for lack of words like, erotic, kind
- 28:32of art, or, or maybe risque. I don't know which word to use.
- 28:36But anyway, yeah. But anyway, that was my cover
- 28:39art on my box set and, you know, you see them like at Walmart or
- 28:43whatever. Now and they just have words,
- 28:46they don't have like pictures, right?
- 28:49Like actual cover. So I had lent the second one to
- 28:54a former coworker, And when I asked for it back, she never
- 29:00told me right away. I don't know if it's the truth
- 29:03or not, but whatever. She's like, oh, I'll get it back
- 29:06to you because I was going to start another job, a new job.
- 29:10And I waiting waiting, she told me all these things like, oh,
- 29:14I'll leave it at my husband's Grandma's house.
- 29:17I went to a collective. The ground was like, I don't
- 29:20have anything so I sent her a message.
- 29:24Where's my book? You know, Not exactly like that.
- 29:27And I was in means, actually, because I really like this gal
- 29:32and she's like, well, I have to order you a new one.
- 29:36Should get there? Of course, I never got there cuz
- 29:40I don't think she ever ordered it, but then she says in the
- 29:43end, the dog ate it, and I'm like, okay, why didn't you tell
- 29:48me that in the first place? I mean.
- 29:53Do you love books? I know, right.
- 29:55Right. So then I actually just posted a
- 29:58thing picture. I think of the cover are like on
- 30:01social media and I'm like, does anybody know where I can get
- 30:08this? And I was very surprised and
- 30:12very grateful, my cousin found it on eBay and she bought it for
- 30:16me, and it's in the condition. I had it.
- 30:19So, I'm so grateful. Now, I have a complete box
- 30:22again. What the same cover art?
- 30:25Yeah, but you know, I get it there.
- 30:29I collect Patricia Cornwell and I have all of hers in hardback.
- 30:36Hmm, I like that series. That way.
- 30:39Now I have Dean Koontz in his kind of a montage of different
- 30:44format. Yes, and but Patricia Cornwell,
- 30:48I like curves and hardback and I even if I read them, you know,
- 30:52and we'll go through and we'll say, oh, we got to kind of
- 30:54downsizing Eyes a little bit. And I can recycle I can do that
- 30:58with some books, but not hers. There are certain authors.
- 31:01Laurel K Hamilton. I have her series.
- 31:04I just really like it. I like the style of writing or
- 31:07whatever it is and sometimes it's the are on the, like, you
- 31:10say the cover art, I just really like that.
- 31:13Yeah, I think I prefer the paperback the best, but but
- 31:19that's because you read while you're on the bike.
- 31:21And I think that's probably a lot of times I read when I'm on
- 31:23the spin bike. So yeah.
- 31:25It's just, I've always try to read a book while I'm on the
- 31:30stationary bike. I just can't seem to manage it.
- 31:34I love it because it takes my mind off.
- 31:36What I'm doing so. Well, my mind works differently
- 31:41than because I can't seem to manage it and I will keep stop
- 31:45pedaling and read That's counterproductive, all right, as
- 31:51opposed to, if I'm on a treadmill that's kind of
- 31:54different. I can actually Lee.
- 31:56I don't know. For some reason I think maybe
- 31:57I'm afraid to fall. That's might be it.
- 32:06I guess reading whenever you can you know I think it's really the
- 32:10key thing. And you know, I often talk about
- 32:12this, you know? I just I feel like I've been to
- 32:15therapist for 20 plus years and you when I talked with some of
- 32:17the kids, how many of them don't like to read and I just blows my
- 32:21mind, that's one of the things like even with our godchild
- 32:25During their two girls, we always try to get them books you
- 32:30know and because we want them to like books and be inspired to
- 32:36read. I think we if you don't start
- 32:39with them young then you know it doesn't I don't know if it if it
- 32:43catches on with him. Yeah I don't think it solidifies
- 32:46quite the same way but I also think once again it's what we
- 32:49role model and I was I was telling Christie I was really
- 32:52cool because I was talking to one of my I don't see kids but I
- 32:54have Have some teens that I'm finishing up with I'll finish
- 32:58them into adulthood. I don't know.
- 33:00You know, well, we'll just know what it in and but we were
- 33:03talking and she was telling me this week, she goes.
- 33:05Yes. Because after read a book and I
- 33:07said, what are you reading hunting?
- 33:08She Goes To Kill a Mockingbird. I said, oh my goodness.
- 33:12I love that book. And she says, well, I didn't
- 33:15think I was going to she says, but, you know, it's actually an
- 33:18all right book and I got it. Did it just made me so happy.
- 33:24I think it's because Sometimes you're forced to read those
- 33:27books that you don't realize you're going to like, you know,
- 33:33and it kind of opens your eyes up to.
- 33:36I remember, when I read To Kill a Mockingbird, I had never read
- 33:39a book where they talked in the dialect of the place that it was
- 33:43written, you know, where they grew up, you know, in the South,
- 33:45It Was Written in that southern dialect and stuff, and I thought
- 33:48that was so cool, you know, that's how Shepherd of the Hills
- 33:52is. Mmm.
- 33:53Yeah, it's written in that dialect.
- 33:54So You know, I think that there's so many things that can
- 33:57help inspire people to read, but it starts, I think when we
- 34:03really instilled that in kids and help them to understand the
- 34:06value of it. I mean, I think that's kind of
- 34:08cool, how you said that about your niece.
- 34:10She wanted so bad to know what the video games were saying.
- 34:13Well, I'll show you all learn to read on my own.
- 34:17I think some people may not enjoy reading or want to read
- 34:22because they haven't found the book that is for them.
- 34:25This is very true, you really have to kind of fight to say
- 34:29that because like I was never a sci-fi fantasy person back in
- 34:36the day, my supervisor, because I would have had to bookstore
- 34:40actually gave me a book called The bomba twin and I was like, I
- 34:48can't get into this. I try to give it back to her.
- 34:51It's like, no, no, try again, try.
- 34:53Again, 30 pages. Get back to.
- 34:55I just can't get into this. So then she gives it back.
- 35:00She's like, read at least, 100 150 pages.
- 35:03And oh, my God, by then I'm like, I love this.
- 35:08Why have I never read sci-fi fantasy?
- 35:12Sometimes somebody just has to point the way that or you have
- 35:17to find the book that's for you, you know?
- 35:20Yes, it's sometimes it's what you're in the mood for whatever
- 35:22to and I you've gifted me a lot of books.
- 35:24Do you know that? Like, like Supernatural and
- 35:29ghost story kind of books, especially if they're based on
- 35:32the state where we live, I like the ones about called
- 35:34especially, but we have found some really cool ones.
- 35:39You know, when I think about role modeling, you know, my mom
- 35:41was an Avid Reader. Oh my goodness.
- 35:43She loved Louis L'Amour, she read romance.
- 35:46My dad thought so much. He loved Comics.
- 35:49He grew up with comics and stuff and I remember one day I went to
- 35:52visit and he's sitting there to go.
- 35:55Ghost. Hey, that's a pretty good book.
- 35:58And I said, well book and it was the Body Farm by Patricia
- 36:01Cornwell. I had actually left my book
- 36:03there. Oh here it it gonna go.
- 36:06Dad, you did not read that book. He goes, oh yes!
- 36:09I did! I said Dad, we're going to have.
- 36:11Okay, tell me about the book and he does I said you actually read
- 36:15this book. Yeah, I did.
- 36:19But you know, it was such it was so cool for me to be able to
- 36:23talk with him about a book. Because he was not he didn't
- 36:28rebook, it just was not his things, he would read magazines
- 36:31and things like that, but not books.
- 36:34But I have another funny story about my dad, my dad at my
- 36:36parents come to visit me and I was reading a book, it happened
- 36:39to be a lesbian book. While I left it on my count on
- 36:42my coffee table, and I went in, I'm doing stuff, and when I come
- 36:47back out, he's holding the book, reading it.
- 36:49He just opened, and he puts the book down, and he looks at my
- 36:53mom and I walk out. And he goes to my mom, honey.
- 36:57You wouldn't believe the book she reads.
- 37:19I think that your passion for reading.
- 37:22I do not think I have met anybody in my life who To read
- 37:26as much as you and who has this relationship with books because
- 37:30of what a book provides for you. Yeah, it's such an amazing thing
- 37:35and like I said, people I say, hey Sandra, can we do a book
- 37:39club and the answer? Yes, we can.
- 37:41But, you know, it never happens because Sandra reads, three
- 37:44books. At one time, I have to say,
- 37:48she's kind of been a bad influence on me because now I'm
- 37:52reading a new Earth. I'm reading the doll.
- 37:55We booked and Patterson's book called the same time now.
- 38:01But do you ever find like when you read three or four weeks at
- 38:05a time? It's like okay.
- 38:07Wait a minute, I really want to read this one because you know,
- 38:12that kind of thing like so and Bishop, there's a series, the
- 38:18other world. I think it's called and I've
- 38:21been reading the third book in the series for a long time now
- 38:25because I just don't want it to end, even though there's like
- 38:27five or six books, why just been out?
- 38:32You, you gave me when we were dragons.
- 38:34I think it is. There like it turned out to be a
- 38:37really, really good book and just amazing.
- 38:40And I always appreciate that because every once in a while,
- 38:43she'll say, have you read this book?
- 38:45Do you like it? And I'll say it.
- 38:46Well, I don't know and then I'm not going.
- 38:48I'll say yeah, that doesn't she sounds pretty good.
- 38:49And then, you know, here comes the book, you know, one of the
- 38:53things I think is kind of funny. Is when I did give you that book
- 38:57you assumed I had read it, but I haven't read it and you told me
- 39:00it was good, so I put all my to be read list.
- 39:02Yeah, yeah, it's called when women were dragons and yeah, we
- 39:08really should. It's actually a really good
- 39:10book. Yeah, don't worry.
- 39:12It's on my list. I understand people.
- 39:15I also know that this might mean that Sandra and I will be
- 39:17talking about this book in about six or eight months true, very
- 39:22true because I can't even get her to finish the James.
- 39:25Are some books so we can talk about what?
- 39:28No, I already finished it. You're the one who's still
- 39:30reading it. Oh, you did finish it.
- 39:33Yeah, I just need to reread it when you finish your book.
- 39:37That way I can know what the heck we're talking about.
- 39:39Although I already know what we're talking about.
- 39:42Oh my goodness. Okay, well, I'm about, okay, see
- 39:45ya. It's a good thing you did.
- 39:46Yeah, I finish it. When I finished it before you
- 39:48started it, I think. Oh my goodness.
- 39:52So now you're the one that needs to.
- 39:53Okay, it's a good thing we had This podcast people so I could
- 39:56find out what I need to do. I will be finishing the James
- 40:01Patterson book before I finish a new Earth and I got to read a
- 40:05new Earth again so that Christy and I can talk about it and
- 40:08Kathy G were gonna we had an extra books over and give it to
- 40:11her. So we can kind of have a little
- 40:12book club and talked about it. And I think that's what's really
- 40:15cool is when you can read those books in the you can exchange
- 40:18that information with somebody else.
- 40:19You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 40:20So I guess I'll do that with movies.
- 40:22That's one of the things that we love about reading.
- 40:25As we like, to talk about them and, you know, share our
- 40:28thoughts on them, and we've talked about in the past on
- 40:31podcast that Sharon, and I sometimes will pick a book and
- 40:34read it together. Read it to each other.
- 40:36We take turns and we pause a lot of times and, you know, talk
- 40:41about some of the ideas in it. So, yeah.
- 40:44I think everybody should. I do try to read it to the dog
- 40:49Daisy but she doesn't respond. When I ask questions she just
- 40:53degrees kind of, you know, No, but does he at least listen?
- 40:57Oh yeah most definitely she's very intently listening actually
- 41:02and cool so that you do have a reading buddy.
- 41:07Yes, you know and like I said, you know, we share the passion
- 41:11of reading and shift a little bit.
- 41:14We also share a passion of travel.
- 41:16You love to travel, you know, one of the things I thought was
- 41:19really cool. Is that when you went to
- 41:20Morocco, And I was such a Fast Trip.
- 41:24Yeah. It was about a week it was
- 41:26during the Christmas season and what 2016 I believe.
- 41:30Mmm. Yeah, so what's really cool
- 41:34about? So I guess I'm going to
- 41:36backtrack a little bit but looks are kind of like movies and if
- 41:40you travel even if a book is fiction a lot of these authors
- 41:46still research stuff and like when I'm writing a book like for
- 41:52Listen Sara Maria. And she writes about romance in
- 41:56New York and stuff like that and I'm like oh I'm gonna write this
- 42:00down then IMA look it up. If it's a real place, I like to
- 42:03go there someday. Yeah.
- 42:06And then two movies are kind of like books in the sense that if
- 42:11you travel, if you watch a movie, you like, oh wow, I've
- 42:14been there and you can stay the same thing about books and you
- 42:19can even say that if you haven't been there, because For you've
- 42:22been there in your mind by reading that book.
- 42:24Yeah, exactly. And you know, that's we do that,
- 42:27you know, because our we went to Europe with you and so
- 42:31oftentimes even if we're watching a movie or something.
- 42:33Oh my God, we were there. Yeah, well, you know, things
- 42:36like that so it's it's really cool.
- 42:38It causes it to be more of a relationship in a weird way.
- 42:42Well yeah. I think there is it books, and
- 42:45travel really do go kind of hand in hand.
- 42:47When you think about it, thank you say, the way you the way you
- 42:49put that. That's true.
- 42:51And I Oh, that one of the trips that we've talked about taking
- 42:54we want to go to New Zealand. At some point, we are big fans
- 42:59of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
- 43:01Those are really near and dear to us.
- 43:05So we want to go and and do the whole hobbiton tour and all of
- 43:10that and I think that that would be so cool.
- 43:13I watched that movie and I just I think oh man to see the Shire
- 43:17how cool would that be? You know and you know the other
- 43:21cool thing about When we travel is Sandra, you're very easy to
- 43:24travel with, but one of the things we really appreciated
- 43:27was, you know, we went to Paris, you know, we're talking about
- 43:30this and, you know, Sanders doing her research because we
- 43:32plan all of our stuff. We don't go through travel
- 43:34agents or anything, and you came back, he said, hey can we do a
- 43:37food tour? I mean, we had never even
- 43:39thought about it and then you talk about the evening menu or
- 43:42they're like, nope, we're not going to eat escargot and not
- 43:48know you suggested the the lunch one it was real.
- 43:52Really cool. I really felt like it was one of
- 43:54the highlights of the trip. Yeah.
- 43:56So I think sometimes, you know, even in that, you know, you
- 43:59learn about the cultures and you learn about the different
- 44:02things, and, and then when you do read those books and they're
- 44:05talking about those cultural components, it makes more sense.
- 44:09It reinforces, I should say because you've had that
- 44:12experience, girl. So, you know, I mean, I think
- 44:16those things are so cool and I think that, you know, when you
- 44:18have a passion like, reading and traveling, I mean, and then You
- 44:22like in food because we talk a lot about food to suffering
- 44:38but we do we go. We talk about food, you know,
- 44:40and we're, you know, we're in Europe.
- 44:42We talked a lot about the food. We would look at the food, they
- 44:45do it sober, D, hahaha, and then passing all the pastry places.
- 44:51Oh, yeah. You got to stop in there.
- 44:55You like ice cream? So, yeah, that was kind of a
- 44:58cool thing to when we were in Europe, you would say, oh no,
- 45:01let's do this. And we and we were there to go,
- 45:03get, we're on vacation, we're going to do this.
- 45:05And so we got all those experiences to, you know?
- 45:09So I mean it's just overall. I think that we get, it's so
- 45:13cool in our friendship and we talked about the importance of
- 45:15building relationships and keeping those relationships and
- 45:19finding those commonalities that help too.
- 45:22It reinforced those relationships and build that
- 45:24stronger Bond and I felt like it was great.
- 45:27We got to bond over Nutella ice cream and Amsterdam.
- 45:30That was great. I can't share my book with you
- 45:36that I bought from there because it is in Spanish.
- 45:41That's actually cool. You you read your mind angle so
- 45:44you read in Spanish teacher. It takes me a little while, but
- 45:48I can do it. So, you know, there's a Well, as
- 45:52we're getting ready to wrap up hopefully people understand, you
- 45:55know one of the reasons that it was fun for us to do this is
- 45:57because we really do want to encourage reading.
- 46:01We want to encourage parents to read, to their children, and all
- 46:04of those things because it's such an important thing.
- 46:07It takes like you said, it's an Escape, but it takes you into
- 46:11these other worlds in these other places.
- 46:14And I think it inspires us. Sometimes, you can read those
- 46:17books that about inspiration, you can read those books, that
- 46:20are funny, can read those books that are Is that it is wide
- 46:23range or that are even about memories like you said.
- 46:26And you know about here, you hearing my mom's doing the
- 46:31voices of the book. Yeah.
- 46:32You know from when I was younger there's there's just so many
- 46:35reasons that reading is valuable.
- 46:37Yeah, well for instance, where I live Elmo, so there's much not
- 46:41much diversity. So I have to read to get that.
- 46:45You have another, that's another thing.
- 46:47It's that diversity, it's learning cultures, there's just
- 46:51so much to do. So hopefully, you know, as
- 46:54you're listening to this podcast today if if you are a lover of
- 46:58books that makes you just love and appreciate a more.
- 47:00If you're kind of riding the fence, it inspires you to pick
- 47:04up a book and to read it in to take a journey.
- 47:07Go on this amazing journey and see what you can find and
- 47:11encourage children to read because once again it can help
- 47:16them if they're having different stuff going on.
- 47:18It does become that escape. So Sandra We want to thank you
- 47:23so much for joining us and talking about your passion of
- 47:26reading. And I think the listeners are
- 47:29going to really hear that passion with you and, you know,
- 47:33and hopefully it inspires somebody to pick up a book in to
- 47:37read. You know, if anybody want that
- 47:40doesn't like to read and they haven't gotten it into reading,
- 47:44I will help you become a reader. There you go.
- 47:48I will send you a book. There you go.
- 47:52And I expect nothing in return. Awesome.
- 47:56That's a true lover reader. So once again we want to thank
- 48:01Sandra for being on here. We will be back next week and
- 48:06thank you. Hope you enjoyed the episode and
- 48:09be kind and good to each other and read a book.
