- 1:00Melanie Poole, welcome to Troy Public Radio.
- 1:03Thank you very much.
- 1:04For three years, you've been working
- 1:07on this special occasion this year.
- 1:09What is it?
- 1:10We have.
- 1:11So America celebrates her 250th birthday this year,
- 1:14the semi-quincentennial, and this is a milestone event.
- 1:18I remember the bicentennial in 1976.
- 1:22I was 12 at the time,
- 1:23and everyone was extremely excited about the big birthday.
- 1:28And you were learning about Alabama's history at the time.
- 1:31So American Village personifies that history.
- 1:35Give us sort of an overview
- 1:37of what's there for your visitors.
- 1:39It does.
- 1:40So American Village has been here since 1999,
- 1:42and we are a campus that's made up of replicas
- 1:46of some of the most important American buildings,
- 1:49such as Mount Vernon, Independence Hall,
- 1:51the President's Oval Office,
- 1:53Concord Bridge, and many, many others.
- 1:55And those buildings act as a backdrop
- 1:58for what we do best here,
- 2:00which is historical interpretation.
- 2:02Our staff takes you by the hand,
- 2:04and you experience the power,
- 2:06the drama of America's founding era.
- 2:09You become a patriot, and you are given the choice
- 2:13of whether we're going to fight for a new country
- 2:16or we're going to remain British subjects.
- 2:19And it really brings home the decisions
- 2:22that these everyday, ordinary citizens
- 2:25had to face back in that time.
- 2:28Are there special programs for your summer visitors?
- 2:31We have a stellar summer program.
- 2:34In cooperation with America 250 Alabama,
- 2:37we have created a summer program
- 2:39all about the Declaration of Independence
- 2:42and what was happening during that time.
- 2:45You will visit with people of that time period,
- 2:50learn about what their lives were like,
- 2:52and those difficult choices that they did have to make.
- 2:55And of course, we're extremely honored
- 2:57to be designated the semi-quincentennial
- 3:00celebration capital in Alabama.
- 3:02We have the honor of hosting
- 3:04Alabama's official celebration of America's 250th birthday.
- 3:09And that will take place July 3rd and 4th,
- 3:12right here at the American Village in Montevallo.
- 3:14The celebration of this birthday
- 3:17doesn't take place in Washington, D.C.
- 3:20It takes place in the small towns and downtowns.
- 3:25It takes place with parades,
- 3:27with watermelon eating contests,
- 3:29with fireworks, with fellowship
- 3:32with your friends and neighbors.
- 3:35And that's what we're all about here at America Village.
- 3:37We want to bring you Alabama musicians,
- 3:41Alabama authors, state attractions,
- 3:44and of course, I will say we have the best
- 3:46up-close-and-personal fireworks in the state, bar none.
- 3:49I may be a little biased.
- 3:51American Village is so impressive, Melanie.
- 3:54What else can visitors see there?
- 3:57We have the embattled farmer statue.
- 4:01You can walk into the ballroom,
- 4:02and it's as if you're in the East Room of the White House.
- 4:05You can visit the Colonial Chapel
- 4:08and hear Patrick Henry do the
- 4:11give me liberty or give me death speech,
- 4:13like you would hear in Bruton Parish Church.
- 4:16Of course, we have the stocks and pillory.
- 4:17We have the redcoats.
- 4:19We have our replica of Mount Vernon,
- 4:21where George Washington called home.
- 4:24And I think the centerpiece, the crown jewel of campus,
- 4:27is now our Independence Hall.
- 4:29We have a talking portrait gallery.
- 4:32So if you are a fan of Harry Potter,
- 4:35you're gonna walk into this seemingly dull,
- 4:38boring portrait gallery.
- 4:39But all of a sudden, those pictures come to life,
- 4:43and they have a very lively discussion
- 4:45about the Declaration of Independence.
- 4:47You'll walk across the hall and become a delegate,
- 4:50and you will decide whether you want to have a new nation
- 4:54and sign your name on the Declaration of Independence.
- 4:57We have a wonderful, talented staff
- 4:59of costumed historical interpreters.
- 5:02And when you arrive on campus,
- 5:04you're just thrust back into
- 5:06the time of the American Revolution,
- 5:08and you get to take part in it.
- 5:09So are you saying that you have reenactors there
- 5:13who reenact these characters and these events?
- 5:16We do.
- 5:17We call them costumed historical interpreters.
- 5:20We have Martha Washington, John and Abigail Adams,
- 5:24Patrick Henry, Phyllis Wheatley,
- 5:26any number of important patriots of the past.
- 5:29And these people take their jobs very seriously.
- 5:32They are constantly researching the patriot
- 5:36that they are portraying,
- 5:37making sure they get every detail right.
- 5:40All the costumes that they wear are created.
- 5:43Here on campus, we have a very talented staff
- 5:45of seamstresses.
- 5:46I think they make everything but the hats and the shoes.
- 5:50Our grounds and facilities department
- 5:53keeps the campus spotless,
- 5:55and makes sure that those buildings that you are in
- 5:59feel like you're back in 1776.
- 6:01Have you run across any historical stories
- 6:05that surprised you, that you learned?
- 6:08Oh my gosh, innumerable.
- 6:09I love to see the little light bulb moments
- 6:12when students come on campus and they can connect
- 6:16something that they've learned in school
- 6:19with an event that the interpreter is performing.
- 6:24You know, I've never heard the story of Phyllis Wheatley,
- 6:27an African girl brought over from Senegal
- 6:30when she was six or seven years old.
- 6:32She was sold into slavery,
- 6:34and she became the first published African American poet.
- 6:38It's an incredible story.
- 6:40She lived down the street
- 6:42from where the Boston Massacre took place,
- 6:45and the first man to give his life for liberty
- 6:49did not even have it for himself.
- 6:51We learn about Chief Massasoit,
- 6:53who exchanged gifts with the pilgrims
- 6:56and helped them learn how to survive
- 6:59when they arrived from Europe.
- 7:02Just all these amazing, amazing stories come to life.
- 7:06Does your website have a preview
- 7:09of what's available at American Village?
- 7:11Absolutely.
- 7:12The American Village website is americanvillage.org.
- 7:16We also have the America 250 Alabama website.
- 7:19That's americatwofiftyal.org.
- 7:23And the big celebration coming up July 3rd and 4th.
- 7:26You can find out everything about the festival
- 7:29at sweethome250.com.
- 7:32And where else would you celebrate the birth of our nation
- 7:36than a place like American Village
- 7:37that teaches it every single day?
- 7:41So what's happening around July 4th, the big birthday?
- 7:47Yes, it is.
- 7:47And this is the big celebration
- 7:49we've been working on for three years.
- 7:51It's called Sweet Home 250,
- 7:53where freedom feels like home.
- 7:56It's a down-home celebration.
- 7:58We're welcoming 18 Alabama musicians.
- 8:01We have Taylor Hicks, the Blind Boys of Alabama,
- 8:04Miles Morgan, Chuck Lavelle, Rick Carter,
- 8:07and a number of other very well-known musical artists.
- 8:12We have Alabama authors.
- 8:13We've invited state attractions.
- 8:16We have America's Kitchen with celebrity Alabama chefs.
- 8:21We have eating contests.
- 8:23How many Priester's Pecan Pies can you eat in five minutes?
- 8:26How about Kineka Dogs or Blue Bill Ice Cream?
- 8:29It's going to be so much fun to watch those contestants.
- 8:32But it also involves what American Village does best,
- 8:35and that is our historical interpretation
- 8:39of the founding events of our country.
- 8:42Can you give us directions?
- 8:44We're very easy to find off of I-65 at exit 234,
- 8:49and just follow the signs.
- 8:51Melanie, I have so enjoyed our visit today,
