In which young Arthur Grant awakens to find himself aboard the good ship Columbia, encountering the unaccustomed trials of seasickness and the start of a lengthy voyage to San Francisco. He soon uncovers a mysterious letter from Curtis Waring explaining his passage, and befriends the fellow passenger Randolph Leslie, a seasoned reporter whose interest invites Arthur to share the curious circumstances that led to his seaborne journey.
