- 2:04Speaker 1: and Pacific a pm Central, let's talk about the event
- 2:09Speaker 1: that I want to It was the one design care
- 2:12Speaker 1: Gaylor the Holly rod Foundation, hosted by you and your
- 2:16Speaker 1: amazing husband. You just fel funny, Jason, You're rightnay funny.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So finally I finally came all these years, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you know, always in the check, which she reminds me,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I said the check, and I finally, I finally came.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I brought my wife, my wife. So now because I
- 2:35Speaker 1: brought my wife, you'll see us every year now, hollyge Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: I knew she loved so much. I'm so happy to
- 2:45Speaker 1: see you guys there. And first of all, let me
- 2:48Speaker 1: say thank you for assesting your hard earned dollars uh
- 2:51Speaker 1: into Holly Rod. And we can't do what we do
- 2:54Speaker 1: for twenty plus years without people like yourself, who's just
- 2:59Speaker 1: you're one of those yes skies. And I mean that
- 3:00Speaker 1: in a good way, like I hear a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 1: nose in philanthropy because it's basically creative begging and calling
- 3:06Speaker 1: around asking for money for your cause. And every single
- 3:11Speaker 1: time I think I've just slightly asked you, it's just
- 3:14Speaker 1: been of course, yes, no problem, where do I send it?
- 3:17Speaker 1: So I want to thank you for that, and I'm
- 3:19Speaker 1: just it really did thrill me to see you in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the house, actually be able to say your name. And
- 3:24Speaker 1: she's so funny because you know, she calls out different
- 3:27Speaker 1: people who have donated, you know, and she called out
- 3:30Speaker 1: my name with the with the with the with the
- 3:32Speaker 1: feeling that I wasn't there. Rashan McDonald, I'm here. Oh
- 3:37Speaker 1: he's here because she's called out that name so many years.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald crickets, crickets, crickets difference than it's just really
- 3:52Speaker 1: it was just awesome to have you all in the house. Well,
- 3:54Speaker 1: first of all, I'm proud to be a part of something.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Let's make the announce smith that as without on the
- 4:01Speaker 1: press release and back in UH. The charity this year
- 4:04Speaker 1: raised seven hundred thousand dollars for the Holly Robinson Pet
- 4:08Speaker 1: and Family UH for Autism and Parkinson Correct. Mm hmm,
- 4:13Speaker 1: that's correct. And you know, we we felt short of
- 4:16Speaker 1: our goals. Um, but we're gonna We've been trying to
- 4:19Speaker 1: hit that million mark for several years now. But you
- 4:24Speaker 1: know what, but we feel like we every year we learned.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Every year we get new partners. We have got some
- 4:29Speaker 1: new partners this year, and we we we get we
- 4:32Speaker 1: get We talked to our partners after we asked them
- 4:34Speaker 1: what they think of the charity, the event, and we
- 4:37Speaker 1: build on that. So we're very confident that we're going
- 4:40Speaker 1: to hit that goal next year. Well, first of all, UH,
- 4:42Speaker 1: seven hundred thousand dollars is uh is a proud number
- 4:45Speaker 1: for Rashan McDonald's say on this show Money Making Conversations,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I know your goal is a million, and I'm there
- 4:51Speaker 1: to next year to contribute to make sure we get
- 4:54Speaker 1: closer to the number or past that million dollar mark.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Because now I know the goal. So you know, I
- 4:58Speaker 1: didn't know that. All I do was right to check.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So now I know the goal. So my motivation has
- 5:03Speaker 1: to be different. Now you know, brand awareness and so
- 5:08Speaker 1: in short, just tell people about what exactly the foundation does.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So Hollywood Foundation was started, uh like twenty almost twenty
- 5:15Speaker 1: three years ago because of my father. My father, Matthew
- 5:18Speaker 1: Robins knew a lot of people at a certain age
- 5:20Speaker 1: will remember the original Gordon on Sesame Street, which just
- 5:24Speaker 1: celebrated at fifty ath anniversary, which is pretty amazing. Um.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And my dad was a television pioneer. He was really
- 5:33Speaker 1: the first one of the first black men on TV
- 5:35Speaker 1: in that role. I mean, those of you who are
- 5:38Speaker 1: over fifty will remember that. You know, there really wasn't
- 5:41Speaker 1: much diversity in children's television or television period back then,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and my dad came along and really changed the game.
- 5:48Speaker 1: As the not just the star Gordon and the first
- 5:51Speaker 1: person you saw in the first episode of Sess Street,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but also an executive producer and somebody who wrote and
- 5:57Speaker 1: had made a had a muppet called Rosa about Franklin.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's really part of that culture. Um Later on he
- 6:03Speaker 1: ended up writing and producing many shows like Samford and
- 6:06Speaker 1: Sons of Walton's, Eight Is Enough and The Cosby Show.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And then he Um was diagnosed with Parkinson's dis at
- 6:14Speaker 1: the young age of forty eight years old, maybe even
- 6:17Speaker 1: forty forty six. We didn't know where it was yet,
- 6:21Speaker 1: so he got Parkinson's. I was a freshman in college.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Um I didn't really know what to do about that,
- 6:26Speaker 1: but we later on when I met and Mary Rodney Pete,
- 6:29Speaker 1: he helped show me that we needed to start a
- 6:31Speaker 1: nonprofit to get the word out because there was not
- 6:33Speaker 1: much information about Parkinson's and helping families. So that's what happened.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Then later on our twins are born, our j was
- 6:41Speaker 1: diagnosed with autism. When we knew we had to share
- 6:43Speaker 1: expand our mission to autism, so we helped families with
- 6:47Speaker 1: compassionate care for both autism and Parkinson's disease with the
- 6:51Speaker 1: funds that we raised. Last year, we were able to
- 6:53Speaker 1: open our J's Place, our very first one in Los Angeles,
- 6:56Speaker 1: which will help prepare young people on the spectrum to
- 6:58Speaker 1: get jobs and in the workforce. So that's what we're doing,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and we're really proud of the work we're doing, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: we have a lot more to go, a lot more
- 7:05Speaker 1: things to do. Well. You know, the thing about it
- 7:07Speaker 1: is that I recommend everybody, Um, I'm on the bandwagon
- 7:11Speaker 1: and teen moving into uh PRE promoted to get the
- 7:15Speaker 1: word out early, because I know that's how you hit
- 7:17Speaker 1: the million dollar mark. You don't get to hit a
- 7:19Speaker 1: million dollar mark just just doing an event and walking away.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You have to continue expand the brand that advertisers know.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And that's why I wanted to make this part of
- 7:26Speaker 1: the interview. We're going to talk about the Christmas TV
- 7:29Speaker 1: special coming up. But the thing about it that my
- 7:32Speaker 1: walk away from the event was that I smiled the
- 7:34Speaker 1: whole time. I had a good time the whole time.
- 7:38Speaker 1: It felt like family. When r J came out, that's
- 7:40Speaker 1: her son came out and adapt up Magic Johnson, it
- 7:44Speaker 1: felt like a routine that has been happening and part
- 7:47Speaker 1: of the presentation and Magic sitting right there front and center.
- 7:51Speaker 1: For years, it just felt like, you know, the whole um,
- 7:54Speaker 1: they hold the whole set up with with Rodney hosting,
- 7:58Speaker 1: and and you know, you know, you know, you you're
- 8:00Speaker 1: you're the extreme professional. You know you can add lib
- 8:03Speaker 1: and and Rodney, you know, he knows how to call
- 8:05Speaker 1: an audible. He knows how to up with me, right,
- 8:08Speaker 1: he knows how, he knows how. He knows he's gonna
- 8:13Speaker 1: get sacked out there hanging out with you. He knows
- 8:16Speaker 1: because because back they I'll be wearing him out because
- 8:20Speaker 1: I'm like, what happened to you? When you're a quarterback?
- 8:22Speaker 1: You've got to be ready for those hot reads, those audibles.
- 8:24Speaker 1: You gotta change the call the line of stream because
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know, some phase weren't working in order. And I'm like,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and he was like wait, because you know he likes
- 8:31Speaker 1: plays like if you don't, just roll with the punches.
- 8:36Speaker 1: So but we get soon. We have a lot of
- 8:38Speaker 1: fun on stage, and we do have a room full
- 8:40Speaker 1: of really amazing people like yourself who understand our mission.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And we couldn't do without you, guys. I want to
- 8:45Speaker 1: make announce me because a couple of guests could not
- 8:47Speaker 1: be announced to actually performed there. That did an amazing
- 8:51Speaker 1: performance because at the time that person was still in
- 8:54Speaker 1: competition for America's Got Talent. Correct the announcement of who
- 8:59Speaker 1: that will? Why his performance was so amazing? Well, I
- 9:03Speaker 1: think many of us saw Cody Lee from America's Got
- 9:06Speaker 1: Talent when he went viral. It was something like thirty
- 9:08Speaker 1: million views. And I'm not even under exaggerating over exaggerating.
- 9:13Speaker 1: He when he sang came out blind with autism and
- 9:16Speaker 1: sang uh and that audition uh and busted out with
- 9:20Speaker 1: that Donny Hathaway song. We weren't ready, I mean, nobody
- 9:24Speaker 1: was ready and it just it went viral and it
- 9:26Speaker 1: was amazing, and it was really incumbent upon America's Got
- 9:29Speaker 1: Talent to really slow down the expectations of that because
- 9:33Speaker 1: it was so viral. So when he went very viral,
- 9:36Speaker 1: a lot of people like myself in the whole world
- 9:38Speaker 1: were were very touched for about, you know, what was
- 9:42Speaker 1: going on. So I reached out to Cody League and
- 9:44Speaker 1: his mom and they responded and said that the show
- 9:47Speaker 1: would allow them a couple of appearances. Um, and that
- 9:51Speaker 1: was it. Because they were stilly competitions, which of course
- 9:53Speaker 1: we now know that he ended up winning and he
- 9:55Speaker 1: chose Holly Ride to perform um and he also chose
- 9:59Speaker 1: perfectly and they they made the perfect choices, uh, to
- 10:02Speaker 1: perform with Layla Hathaway, which makes absolute sense. So Layla
- 10:05Speaker 1: and I were talking about, you know, we're friends and
- 10:07Speaker 1: how amazing this kid is and was so now he's
- 10:09Speaker 1: in Vegas performing Cody Lee and um, he's just phenomenal body.
- 10:14Speaker 1: When I interview you wherever you come on the show
- 10:16Speaker 1: and we're talking about it is a family conversation. It
- 10:19Speaker 1: was about promoting your brand, is about you know, being
- 10:22Speaker 1: able to extend because you have a career and and
- 10:25Speaker 1: and we all know that in Hollywood there are no guarantees.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And if you want to give people to have advice,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you know, and I know you've had what I feel
- 10:33Speaker 1: that your support system has been powerful. And then the
- 10:36Speaker 1: fact that your parents were in the entertainment business. Your
- 10:39Speaker 1: mom is amazing and if we could talk a little bit,
- 10:41Speaker 1: I've been mentioned it several times, if you could tell
- 10:43Speaker 1: them exactly who your mom is and what she's doing today,
- 10:46Speaker 1: because your mom is Uh, now you're living in Palm
- 10:50Speaker 1: Springs living her best life. At eight three, she really deserves,
- 10:53Speaker 1: deserved and earned everything. But you know, she came to
- 10:56Speaker 1: California in the seventies with two kids Flean, you know,
- 10:59Speaker 1: trying to look for a better life, and she ended
- 11:01Speaker 1: up in these rooms where no one looked like her.
- 11:03Speaker 1: So she broke through glass ceilings as a talent manager.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Her first client with LeVar Burton on the eve of Roots,
- 11:09Speaker 1: and she was somebody that just absolutely wouldn't take no
- 11:12Speaker 1: for an answer. Um. And so she was able to
- 11:16Speaker 1: go on and manage Wesley Snipes and Rosie Peretz and
- 11:19Speaker 1: Michael Clark Duncan and and people that were you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: really took them to the pinnacle of their careers. Uh,
- 11:25Speaker 1: Martin Sheen, m Charlie Sheen. She's worked with so many
- 11:29Speaker 1: people and done some things that she wasn't supposed to do.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So when she set off to find this better life
- 11:34Speaker 1: from Philly, uh, she really did that, did the dag
- 11:37Speaker 1: on things. So I'm just so proud of her. Um.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And now she's in her next chapter, as she said,
- 11:42Speaker 1: well she's a then palm spring. She's worked hard, she's
- 11:46Speaker 1: hanging out down there. She got her little life. I
- 11:48Speaker 1: just gave her the um breaking the glass Feeling awards
- 11:52Speaker 1: last week from the Palm Springs Women in Film and
- 11:55Speaker 1: Television Organization, So she's still being honored. I'm pushing her
- 11:59Speaker 1: to write a book because I think again a couple
- 12:01Speaker 1: of great books in her well. She is a lot
- 12:03Speaker 1: as a motivation, as a light, because she saw articulate
- 12:06Speaker 1: and she's so personable and you know, and if you
- 12:09Speaker 1: get near her and she just chip chip, she'll find
- 12:11Speaker 1: your gig, you know, because she'll make a phone call
- 12:13Speaker 1: for you right there. I've noticed that a lot you need, ma'am.
- 12:17Speaker 1: That's right, ma'am, I'm good. You sure, sure. So before
- 12:22Speaker 1: we leave this show, let's let's get one final wrap
- 12:24Speaker 1: up about the Hallmark movie. Uh, let us know when
- 12:27Speaker 1: we can find it. Give us some last minute of
- 12:29Speaker 1: details so we can make sure we promoted and again,
- 12:31Speaker 1: congratulation on your foundation. A family Christmas Gift will premiere
- 12:36Speaker 1: on Hallmark Movity Mysteries The Separate Two. Everyone please make
- 12:40Speaker 1: sure to watch you. That's so excited about it and
- 12:42Speaker 1: I cannot wait for everyone to see it, starting myself

- 13:07Speaker 1: Thank you for allowing me to promote your brand, and
- 13:10Speaker 1: please tell Rodney High and I see you guys next year.
- 13:12Speaker 1: But of course we're talked prior to that, because I'll
- 13:15Speaker 1: go with a million dollars, I'm putting it out there
- 13:17Speaker 1: and we're gonna put down everything, and we're gonna speak
- 13:20Speaker 1: it and we're gonna make it happen this year. And

- 17:28Speaker 1: to help you out because you're being helped by your
- 17:29Speaker 1: own talents that God gave you, and you've been and
- 17:32Speaker 1: you're tied to hard work. Now, the fun part about
- 17:35Speaker 1: this conversation is that you started doing stand up and
- 17:38Speaker 1: pray of you, which is right outside of Houston, Texas
- 17:41Speaker 1: because you're detruit girl. Correct, Yeah, exactly, that's right. So
- 17:47Speaker 1: so now tell me about this whole transition, because you
- 17:50Speaker 1: know you kind of like me in a way because
- 17:52Speaker 1: you know I work for I b AM. I got
- 17:56Speaker 1: a mad degree and I was doing stand up comedy
- 17:58Speaker 1: at night, and then I ventured to pursue a career
- 18:02Speaker 1: stand up. Tell us your background all got story? Well
- 18:06Speaker 1: best UM or really? I got a UM, I'm front
- 18:09Speaker 1: of Brewster Projects, didn't hand no money, and then one
- 18:12Speaker 1: day I ended up going to UM. I got a
- 18:16Speaker 1: scholarship to go down to Preview and University and UM
- 18:22Speaker 1: one day I just even though I had the scholarship,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I didn't have any spending money. I was in the
- 18:26Speaker 1: barb one day and it was like, well, we'll give
- 18:29Speaker 1: somebody fifty dollars for the best story. And I needed
- 18:33Speaker 1: that money. So I just got a fancy of the story.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I don't know what I said. I don't know what
- 18:38Speaker 1: the story. I just made up something and got the
- 18:40Speaker 1: fifty dollars. And that made me realize that people actually
- 18:44Speaker 1: pay people to tell stories. I was like, oh, this
- 18:46Speaker 1: is this is this is nice. But I decided to
- 18:50Speaker 1: go ahead and get my degree since I was already
- 18:52Speaker 1: down there, got a job. I got a job in
- 18:56Speaker 1: UM in Los Angeles at Zeros and then UM I
- 19:00Speaker 1: worked there and I never really thought i'd be a
- 19:03Speaker 1: stand up but then one day I was like depressed.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I didn't know what I wanted to do in my life.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I just knew I wasn't happy. I didn't want to
- 19:10Speaker 1: be married. UM I had had boyfriend and all that
- 19:14Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and you know, and you know, you
- 19:16Speaker 1: get a nice job and all this kind of stuff.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Is happy to make the fishes in your life. But
- 19:20Speaker 1: I just wasn't happy. And one day I went to
- 19:22Speaker 1: the comedy store and I saw all these men doing
- 19:26Speaker 1: stand up and I only saw one woman and I
- 19:29Speaker 1: was like, wow, that's interesting. It's just one woman. And
- 19:31Speaker 1: she was talking a kind of stuff, you know, you
- 19:34Speaker 1: know back then, you know, and in the nineties that
- 19:39Speaker 1: rough stuff. So that's when I started getting back in it.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I started getting back in the stand up. I built
- 19:46Speaker 1: up my career and one day we had a layoff
- 19:49Speaker 1: at my job and I went to my boss. I said,
- 19:51Speaker 1: you know, save the job and lay me off because
- 19:54Speaker 1: I was I was the worst engineer United States of Maylica.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I was just right because first of all, you would
- 20:04Speaker 1: not That's not what you wanted to do. It's just
- 20:05Speaker 1: like IBM, I don't care. I as good as job
- 20:09Speaker 1: as they said I was doing. My heart was not
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the job. That was not your passion. Your gift
- 20:13Speaker 1: was someplace else. And that's why I bring individuals like
- 20:16Speaker 1: you're on the show, because there are a lot of
- 20:18Speaker 1: people out there doing jobs right now. They're afraid to change,
- 20:21Speaker 1: they're afraid to transition. How did you overcome that fear? Well,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I overcome the fear by making a plan. I need something.
- 20:31Speaker 1: First of all, I have faith, and then I had
- 20:34Speaker 1: faith that I knew that God was gonna you know,
- 20:36Speaker 1: show me the way. And then um, I had to
- 20:40Speaker 1: make a plan. And my plan was basically what what
- 20:43Speaker 1: was I gonna do? So I tell anybody, no matter what,
- 20:46Speaker 1: you know, maybe you want to open up daycare, you
- 20:48Speaker 1: want to you know, open up a restaurant, you want
- 20:50Speaker 1: to do a catering business. You know, any whatever is
- 20:53Speaker 1: you're trying to do, study it. And that's one thing
- 20:56Speaker 1: I like about engineering. Engineering taught me how to study,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and actually it teaches you how to solve problems. For
- 21:03Speaker 1: the problem was I wasn't happy and I wanted to
- 21:05Speaker 1: get out of my current situation for I study. And
- 21:08Speaker 1: I just sat started studying comedy and and and understanding
- 21:13Speaker 1: you know, what was a joke, what was funny, what
- 21:15Speaker 1: wasn't funny? When people say you can't you you could
- 21:18Speaker 1: be naturally funny, you have to have that talent. But
- 21:21Speaker 1: there's also mechanics to understanding comedy. And so that's what
- 21:25Speaker 1: I did. I studied and then once I saw that,
- 21:28Speaker 1: you know, the sign for me was that layoff when
- 21:31Speaker 1: they were I was like, oh, everybody was crying. I
- 21:33Speaker 1: was like, this is my time to get up and
- 21:36Speaker 1: get because the layoff you got severanth package you know.
- 21:41Speaker 1: So that gave me a little cushion. You know. Then
- 21:44Speaker 1: I had already started developing some contacts in the comedy world.
- 21:48Speaker 1: So it was it wasn't an easy transition, but at
- 21:52Speaker 1: least it wasn't like I know some people they said, well,
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna do comedy for six months. Comedy is not
- 21:57Speaker 1: a six month thing. You when you get it, you
- 22:00Speaker 1: gotta get in it, and it's going to be for
- 22:02Speaker 1: a lifetime. You know. It's really funny. Just just I've
- 22:05Speaker 1: never spoken to a comedian with a with an engineering degree,
- 22:08Speaker 1: and it's the same logic that I have in math,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and I'm hearing a person talked similar to me. Because
- 22:14Speaker 1: it's a plan through the whole process. The plan I
- 22:16Speaker 1: went out there I had. I would go into the
- 22:18Speaker 1: clubs and give people like, uh, can you evaluate by
- 22:21Speaker 1: comedy performance? And I would put it in the folder
- 22:24Speaker 1: you get my sheet. They look at me, going, what
- 22:27Speaker 1: are you talking about, saying, here's a it's a form.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Just check off what you think of me in and
- 22:31Speaker 1: you can mail it in later and I'm gonna use
- 22:33Speaker 1: this to get me bookings at other clubs. They went, oh, okay, okay,
- 22:37Speaker 1: We've never had anybody to do this before. I said, yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm this is how I've been trained from my BM.
- 22:41Speaker 1: You do a job, you give, evaluate, evaluated by, and
- 22:44Speaker 1: people will pay you based on your evaluation and just
- 22:47Speaker 1: hearing your logic. It's all in the same place. It's like, Okay,
- 22:51Speaker 1: here I see these layoffs. Here's an opportunity to let
- 22:54Speaker 1: me take this severance pay But you also know there's
- 22:56Speaker 1: no guaranteed. But you also know that hey, you you
- 22:59Speaker 1: know you gotta works as a long run, and that's
- 23:02Speaker 1: where people start falling off. M Yeah, there's been so
- 23:06Speaker 1: many comics that I know that I've tried to transition,
- 23:09Speaker 1: Like you know, I knew I needed to be in someplace,
- 23:12Speaker 1: either Los Angeles or New York if you really want
- 23:16Speaker 1: to be in the business. I know some comics they
- 23:18Speaker 1: were like, well, you know, I saved up enough money
- 23:21Speaker 1: six months and I'm gonna make it. And it's like, dude,
- 23:23Speaker 1: you're not gonna make it in six months. You know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: it's just it, don't It doesn't work like that. So
- 23:28Speaker 1: I tell anybody, no matter what type of transition you're
- 23:31Speaker 1: trying to make, you gotta have a plan. You um,
- 23:35Speaker 1: And there's nothing I think people feel like, well, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 1: sometimes I don't have to have a security net. Nothing's
- 23:41Speaker 1: wrong to me. Nothing's wrong with having a security net.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I knew that if it didn't work, I could always
- 23:47Speaker 1: do something else. I could teach after that. And that's
- 23:49Speaker 1: another thing. And you have your plan, but also having
- 23:52Speaker 1: like a little backup plan. And the backup plan doesn't
- 23:54Speaker 1: mean that you're gonna fails. To me, it's just something
- 23:58Speaker 1: in your subconscious that you know will be all right,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know, instead of having nothing at all, you know
- 24:04Speaker 1: you have plan. This is the great thing about this,
- 24:07Speaker 1: you know I'm talking about because I gotta, I gotta
- 24:10Speaker 1: make this. I made it announcement in your credits about
- 24:13Speaker 1: hosting Essence music festivals called Essence Festival now and walking
- 24:18Speaker 1: on the stage you know it can be as many
- 24:20Speaker 1: as seventy thousand people in front of you, okay, and
- 24:24Speaker 1: then knowing where you started. You know, you knowing because
- 24:26Speaker 1: when you when you start making these transition, telling people
- 24:29Speaker 1: you're telling jokes. They wait, girls, don't you have to
- 24:31Speaker 1: a degree in engineering? The people a doubt. You know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: your family members are question you will how are you
- 24:37Speaker 1: gonna get paid? How are you gonna get paid? Well,
- 24:39Speaker 1: where's the regular check at Now? You you're leaving something
- 24:41Speaker 1: good here? You sure you? Sure you? Sure? So in
- 24:45Speaker 1: that transition, you have to start surrounding yourself with people
- 24:48Speaker 1: who think like you and have your same passion. Otherwise
- 24:52Speaker 1: you won't make it through the whole process. And to
- 24:54Speaker 1: go and to go from that to being on the
- 24:59Speaker 1: stage walking out. Talk talk about first of all getting
- 25:01Speaker 1: the opportunity of getting the call to do that and
- 25:03Speaker 1: then walking out on stage the first time at Essence Festival. Well,
- 25:08Speaker 1: the thing is what people have to realize is number one,
- 25:12Speaker 1: a lot of times, everybody's not gonna be happy for you.
- 25:16Speaker 1: A lot of that doubt that they that they that
- 25:18Speaker 1: they sincerely, they're they're trying to act like they're sincere
- 25:21Speaker 1: and they're worrying and caring about you is their own
- 25:25Speaker 1: fear is that they don't believe that you can do
- 25:27Speaker 1: what you say you're out to do. UM. So I
- 25:30Speaker 1: tell people that you have to believe in yourself with
- 25:33Speaker 1: nobody else believes, and you believe in yourself. But with
- 25:37Speaker 1: me being the first woman to host a SUS festival
- 25:41Speaker 1: UM with seventy thousand people, UM to to be the
- 25:45Speaker 1: host to introduce m Michelle Obama the first date United States.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That just doesn't come overnight. I've been in this for
- 25:53Speaker 1: twenty years. And the thing is is that you know, um.
- 25:58Speaker 1: The thing is that that was all part of my
- 26:00Speaker 1: plan too. It's many nights on the road. It's um
- 26:05Speaker 1: many hours on the road doing stand up, doing stand
- 26:08Speaker 1: up all over the world and understanding what everyone likes,
- 26:13Speaker 1: what makes me different, what makes me funny, what will
- 26:16Speaker 1: work for me? You know, I love you because I
- 26:19Speaker 1: love you because of who you represent. I love you

- 29:48Speaker 1: got the last name right? That they get the last
- 29:50Speaker 1: name right, because I don't want to get you mad.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I've seen you on TV. I want to make sure
- 29:57Speaker 1: I get that right because you know you you're dealing
- 29:58Speaker 1: with knives. First of all, how did you two get together?
- 30:05Speaker 1: Lesson it, saith. Let's talk about the beginning. How did
- 30:07Speaker 1: you guys come together as a dynamic cooking duel? Sure, Um,
- 30:13Speaker 1: Seth and I both grew up in Los Angeles and
- 30:15Speaker 1: we also went away to college. I was to Howard
- 30:18Speaker 1: University in Sethman Tomorrow House Um and so right right, yes,
- 30:24Speaker 1: so Man in DC. Um and so when we were
- 30:26Speaker 1: done at school. We both returned home, and you know,
- 30:29Speaker 1: when you leave away from home and you come back,
- 30:31Speaker 1: things are a little different and sometimes you you know,
- 30:33Speaker 1: you hang out with the new crowd. Um. And so
- 30:35Speaker 1: we were introduced to a mutual friend of ours and
- 30:38Speaker 1: we just kind of bonded over our love of you know, food, fashion.
- 30:41Speaker 1: We're both gone to black colleges, but we had a
- 30:43Speaker 1: lot in coming and we just you know, kind of
- 30:45Speaker 1: became friends fairly quickly. Okay said that was really short story,
- 30:50Speaker 1: you know, and I know she could talk, so can
- 30:53Speaker 1: you add some stuff that she missed out? Seth, please,
- 30:56Speaker 1: thank you, sir man. So um, we actually if you
- 31:00Speaker 1: don't know why, I don't know why she acted like
- 31:01Speaker 1: she can't talk on my show. I don't know why
- 31:04Speaker 1: she acted like she can't talk because you can't shut
- 31:06Speaker 1: up on the TV. I know it's a lot of
- 31:08Speaker 1: footage on the floor where she just keeps talking and said,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I'll be looking at your brother. You know you look
- 31:13Speaker 1: you look at the screen sometime. Can I just say
- 31:15Speaker 1: three words? How are you? Can I say? She come
- 31:19Speaker 1: on my show? She gave us anopsis of one minute.
- 31:23Speaker 1: That's our whole relationship. He went right, what we had on. Well,
- 31:31Speaker 1: he want to know where we ate, So we we've
- 31:34Speaker 1: about that a little bit more so we met, we
- 31:36Speaker 1: actually met for the first time. We always tell people
- 31:40Speaker 1: this story. We met for the first time at a
- 31:41Speaker 1: taco Tuesday. L A and I don't remember that time,
- 31:45Speaker 1: but it was me in my full you know, twentysomething
- 31:48Speaker 1: year old um self. I used to walk around with
- 31:52Speaker 1: like a king's crown on. You know, my style has
- 31:55Speaker 1: always been like very bold, very bright, very buoyant. Um.
- 32:00Speaker 1: So she thought I was like obnoxious at first, um
- 32:03Speaker 1: and which I'm sure like it's not too far off
- 32:06Speaker 1: from the truth because I personally was back then. And
- 32:09Speaker 1: then the following time we met with that a mutual
- 32:12Speaker 1: friend's house where we kind of you know, we're in
- 32:15Speaker 1: a corner together, and you know, we were just vibing
- 32:18Speaker 1: on all of our life experiences and all of our
- 32:20Speaker 1: interests and things like that, you know, from food to
- 32:23Speaker 1: fashion to you know, both of us being two of
- 32:26Speaker 1: the only ones in our group of friends who attended HBCUs.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And from there we just hit it off. We were
- 32:31Speaker 1: we were like inseparable. We were at each other's houses,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know, every other day. We were you know, going
- 32:37Speaker 1: to kickbacks when the parties hanging out, like we were
- 32:39Speaker 1: like family like instantly. Um So, you know from the
- 32:44Speaker 1: friendship grew you know this this amazing television show, um
- 32:50Speaker 1: that we have now that started off as a web
- 32:52Speaker 1: series on ether Race YouTube networking. You know, the way
- 32:56Speaker 1: everything happened was really naturally. Leslie and I are two
- 32:59Speaker 1: of the main ones in our group of friends who cooked.
- 33:01Speaker 1: So when we would have these Friday night white and
- 33:03Speaker 1: wine doowns or you know, when we have these kick
- 33:05Speaker 1: backs and stuff like that, we were always the ones
- 33:07Speaker 1: in the kitchen, and not because people forced this, so
- 33:09Speaker 1: because we loved it. Um So, Leslie sent me a
- 33:12Speaker 1: tech message one day, like out of the clear blue,
- 33:15Speaker 1: Like I remember I was driving down the One Time Freeway.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I can't remember where I was coming from public downtown
- 33:20Speaker 1: and some showroom or something like that, but I was
- 33:22Speaker 1: driving down the one Time Freeway. She sent me a
- 33:24Speaker 1: text and said, Yo, we should do a cooking show, um,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and we should show it to Eesa because you know
- 33:30Speaker 1: she's looking for new content and so on and so forth,
- 33:32Speaker 1: and it was it was just a no brainer for um.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Um So, you know, like I don't think either one
- 33:37Speaker 1: of us ever considered that we would enjoy the success
- 33:40Speaker 1: that we have in the culinary room. But it was just,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you know, it was just something that was birth naturally
- 33:46Speaker 1: out of our friendship dynamics, out of our love for food,
- 33:50Speaker 1: out of our love for comedy. You know, if you've
- 33:52Speaker 1: watched Butter and Brown once or twice, you know that
- 33:55Speaker 1: we always infused sketch comedy into our show because that's
- 33:57Speaker 1: a very important aspect of our friends shop. We love
- 34:00Speaker 1: to laugh, you know, laughing at you right right right now,
- 34:10Speaker 1: right now, y'all silly. That's that's a couple. You know,
- 34:17Speaker 1: It's a big part of our friendship, and we really
- 34:19Speaker 1: wanted to you know, the other thing that we've that's
- 34:22Speaker 1: been validated by fans of the show is we really
- 34:25Speaker 1: wanted to create a cooking show that was for everybody.
- 34:28Speaker 1: You know, not everybody is a fan of cooking, especially
- 34:31Speaker 1: not everybody body is a fan of um cooking shows.
- 34:34Speaker 1: But we make the show that you know, people who
- 34:38Speaker 1: are not interested at all you want to watch because
- 34:39Speaker 1: it's just like hanging out with your friends and laughing,
- 34:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and you have to get
- 34:43Speaker 1: like a cocktail and some good food. That's the key
- 34:46Speaker 1: because I watched a lot of shows of cooking shows,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and I'm gonna tell you some people are always wanting
- 34:50Speaker 1: to do a cooking show of some making show. It's
- 34:53Speaker 1: a gift. And you too have that gift. In other words,
- 34:56Speaker 1: when you're cooking and you're and you're and you're making things,
- 34:59Speaker 1: it's like it's like an extension of your hand and
- 35:01Speaker 1: extension of your conversation. And that's what's jarvb or about
- 35:05Speaker 1: the whole process. When I watch YouTube are on TV
- 35:09Speaker 1: or watch a video YouTube video, it's just like it's
- 35:11Speaker 1: so effortless, and it's so and and and and the
- 35:15Speaker 1: fact of the matter, it's just like, you know, it's
- 35:16Speaker 1: like a brother and a sister in the kitchen together
- 35:18Speaker 1: to me, okay, and and and so and so and so,
- 35:22Speaker 1: I don't know who I'm gonna go per episode. I
- 35:25Speaker 1: don't know who I'm gonna get though, you know, because
- 35:28Speaker 1: you know, Leslie just don't know what to do with
- 35:31Speaker 1: her hair. Okay, yeah, you know she's a beautiful woman.
- 35:35Speaker 1: One day she got the hair down her back, next
- 35:37Speaker 1: thing is cut off. When that changes us up, so
- 35:39Speaker 1: that's pardon the next time you gotta have the beauty.
- 35:42Speaker 1: That's the beauty of black woman. I know, I know
- 35:44Speaker 1: that I got six sisters, I got sexcession can literally
- 35:47Speaker 1: do anything, literally, But that's a beauty of it. Though.
- 35:54Speaker 1: It's that, but it's never been done in the kitchen though,
- 35:56Speaker 1: I've never seen that. And this is this is a
- 35:58Speaker 1: good thing because that's a person reality, and I worries.
- 36:01Speaker 1: This is a very complimentary statement that I'm making to
- 36:04Speaker 1: both of you guys, like something, you have your little
- 36:06Speaker 1: hat on, you know, your little brim on. Who wears
- 36:08Speaker 1: a brom in the kitchen? Your boy, I'm saying, who
- 36:13Speaker 1: wears a broom in the kitchen? But you said you
- 36:15Speaker 1: the entertainer or somebody in the cooking you right, right,
- 36:20Speaker 1: right right? You know, we always I mean you just
- 36:22Speaker 1: hit the nail on the head. We always want to
- 36:24Speaker 1: give people something refreshing. If you turn on a butter
- 36:27Speaker 1: and brown week to week and you're get in the
- 36:29Speaker 1: same format, the same clothes, the same hair, the same
- 36:34Speaker 1: you know, instructions, the same ingredients and things like that,
- 36:37Speaker 1: like nobody's gonna want to watch after a couple of episodes.
- 36:40Speaker 1: So you know, it's just very much the style stuff
- 36:43Speaker 1: is very much reflective. Again, like of our personalities about
- 36:46Speaker 1: them is really love fashion about stuff is really love
- 36:48Speaker 1: getting dressed and you know, buying new clothes and stuff
- 36:50Speaker 1: like that. So it's it's absolutely an authentic reflection of us.
- 36:53Speaker 1: It's the beauty of our First of all, thank you
- 36:55Speaker 1: for coming on my show, and thank you for a
- 36:57Speaker 1: lot of promote and just get a little background of
- 36:59Speaker 1: where I am. I am a foodie. I think are
- 37:04Speaker 1: Rushawn Each where I I promote popular restaurants that I
- 37:08Speaker 1: go in and die, I don't want to people recommend.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And I have a baker Spotlight website where I promote baking,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and then on my on my Facebook like eight hundred
- 37:18Speaker 1: thousand followers where I always promote good cooking, good good
- 37:23Speaker 1: recipes and if you don't mind, team I like, I
- 37:27Speaker 1: love this relationship I have created. I feel on the phone.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I love to promote some of your recipes and then
- 37:33Speaker 1: drive people to watch you on TV. If you go
- 37:36Speaker 1: to Rushane McDonald you'll see on Sunday, on Monday's, on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I always promote food a miss everything else I do
- 37:43Speaker 1: motivational Mondays and my my podcast of course gets promoted.
- 37:47Speaker 1: But food Cares a lot of weight. Uh, I say
- 37:50Speaker 1: seventy of my followers or female okay and uh and
- 37:54Speaker 1: so I love the really help showcase and help build
- 37:58Speaker 1: your brand and just just just promote the different recipes
- 38:01Speaker 1: that you guys have out there and drive traffic to
- 38:03Speaker 1: your TV network. That's my offer to you because I
- 38:06Speaker 1: feel that the kinship you like a little brothers and
- 38:09Speaker 1: sisters a little but a little a little bit of brother,
- 38:11Speaker 1: little British sister to me on this phone today. I
- 38:14Speaker 1: just want to make sure that you'll understand who Sean is.
- 38:17Speaker 1: That's why I created money making Conversation. I got a
- 38:19Speaker 1: lot of cool tentacles that I've created over the years,
- 38:22Speaker 1: and that's just the general purpose. There's not no money
- 38:24Speaker 1: involved here, just about relationships. And I've been successful because
- 38:28Speaker 1: I understand the value of relationships. We love that. Love
- 38:32Speaker 1: love love that. Thank you. That's awesome. UM. You can
- 38:35Speaker 1: find all of our recipes actually the cider dot tv
- 38:38Speaker 1: UM and so you can shoot you know everybody right there.

- 38:43Speaker 1: it can they can get rights to prising them because
- 38:45Speaker 1: they're available after every show. UM. And then also even
- 38:49Speaker 1: on our Instagram, we have some of our recipes up
- 38:51Speaker 1: on our page. We haven't populated them all just because
- 38:53Speaker 1: you know, we want people to make sure they get
- 38:54Speaker 1: back to aspiring they're able to find them there. Absolutely absolutely,
- 38:59Speaker 1: you know, well you're well, that's the whole thing. That's
- 39:02Speaker 1: the whole thing, because I know that you know, you
- 39:04Speaker 1: guys are gifted. You know you have a gift. You know.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I enjoy I actually enjoy watching you guys. That's why
- 39:10Speaker 1: I can tease you in my interview because I'm comfortable
- 39:13Speaker 1: enough to be able to have these fund level of conversations.
- 39:16Speaker 1: But also I respect the talent the talents there. But
- 39:19Speaker 1: I also know that part of the process is getting
- 39:21Speaker 1: the word out, letting people know that you know that
- 39:24Speaker 1: that I'm available. You can find me here or if
- 39:27Speaker 1: not find me here, find me on my social media,
- 39:29Speaker 1: not find me and find me on YouTube. And that's
- 39:32Speaker 1: why I created money making conversations. And like I said,
- 39:34Speaker 1: uh used little Saturday or Sunday, I post some food,
- 39:38Speaker 1: some food items. On Sunday, I'm always posted some fiature
- 39:41Speaker 1: and be holding some dessert and people lose their mind,

- 39:46Speaker 1: cake with a recipe tied to and I at all
- 39:51Speaker 1: you know and and I and but to be able
- 39:54Speaker 1: to see new talent, brand new talent and like you too,
- 39:57Speaker 1: and be able to help new talent like you grow.
- 40:00Speaker 1: It's part of my dream, it's part of my process.
- 40:02Speaker 1: And I just wanted to let you know that. How
- 40:05Speaker 1: can people tell people your social media handles and let
- 40:08Speaker 1: everybody know where they can find the television show so

- 42:12Speaker 1: listening to Money Making Conversations. I always tell everybody welcome,
- 42:15Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Money Making Conversation. Each money
- 42:18Speaker 1: Making Conversation radio talk show, our podcast is about entrepreneurship
- 42:22Speaker 1: and entertainment. I provide the consumer and business owner access
- 42:26Speaker 1: the CEO, celebrities, entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. We in turn,
- 42:31Speaker 1: as guests on my show, delivered information about we're planning,
- 42:35Speaker 1: the motivation, financial literature, and how they leave a balanced
- 42:39Speaker 1: life which leads to the secrets to success. My next
- 42:43Speaker 1: guest is on the phone. I'm excited enjoy talking to
- 42:47Speaker 1: young entrepreneurs, you know. That's that's why I started to
- 42:49Speaker 1: show Money Making Conversations, not only just passing my advice
- 42:53Speaker 1: to young entrepreneurs, but people want to break into business
- 42:55Speaker 1: and get information. So I always tell people there is
- 42:57Speaker 1: not an age you should you should stop chasing your dreams,
- 43:01Speaker 1: and a lot of people do put time limits on
- 43:04Speaker 1: when they should stop, and at least the frustration at
- 43:07Speaker 1: leads them not accomplishing a lot of I wish I
- 43:09Speaker 1: would have one thing in my vocabulary is the word
- 43:12Speaker 1: that that is not in my vocabulary I wish I
- 43:14Speaker 1: would have. It's like what will I do? What? What
- 43:17Speaker 1: I want to do? Those are the sentences that lead
- 43:20Speaker 1: my life on a daily basis. By the time my
- 43:22Speaker 1: next guest was fourteen years old, he had a full beard.
- 43:27Speaker 1: The last time he was clean shaving was for high
- 43:29Speaker 1: school graduation. Today he is the CEO of Rugged Evolution
- 43:34Speaker 1: A Beard a Beard Carolina Products. Please welcome back to
- 43:38Speaker 1: money making conversation. Hadn't hadn't had him on in a
- 43:41Speaker 1: long time, very good friend of mine, Arrington Gavin a
- 43:47Speaker 1: long time time. But you still look good. You still
- 43:51Speaker 1: look good. Let's let's thank you. Let's talk about you know,
- 43:56Speaker 1: just talking about a little bit of personal experience, because
- 43:58Speaker 1: you know, we all know that. Uh you know when
- 44:01Speaker 1: when you when you look different and you talk different
- 44:03Speaker 1: and you act different, people tend to treat you different. Now,
- 44:06Speaker 1: in in my intro I talked about you had a
- 44:08Speaker 1: full beard or a full beard at the age of
- 44:11Speaker 1: four teens? Were you tease by that when that was happening, No,
- 44:17Speaker 1: I was, it was Actually it made me more possible. Actually,
- 44:19Speaker 1: I mean man, So I enjoyed it. I loved it. Um.
- 44:28Speaker 1: But at the end of the day. I attended private school,
- 44:30Speaker 1: so we had to know Facebook hair policy, so I
- 44:33Speaker 1: had to get rid of it. So that was that
- 44:34Speaker 1: was a downfall, but I love it. Well, it's probably
- 44:38Speaker 1: good that you went to that type of school. Stopped
- 44:40Speaker 1: all the madness. That's fun. That's Fun's fun. So let's
- 44:45Speaker 1: let's let's talk about you know, being a person who
- 44:47Speaker 1: who got face your hair at such an early age.
- 44:50Speaker 1: What were the challenges for you or who did your
- 44:52Speaker 1: turn for advice or information at that at that state,
- 44:55Speaker 1: Even though you didn't carry your round because your your
- 44:58Speaker 1: school uh made you cut cut it you do you could,
- 45:02Speaker 1: you had to deal with the issues are shaving. I'm
- 45:03Speaker 1: much you're daily shaving or least shaving because over times
- 45:06Speaker 1: a week. How did you deal with that? And who
- 45:08Speaker 1: did you turn for advice? Well? I actually turned I
- 45:11Speaker 1: went to a Derman Talegest because I could never really shave.
- 45:14Speaker 1: I never used a straight razor on my face because
- 45:16Speaker 1: it used to irritate my skin, and that was a
- 45:19Speaker 1: reason why I went to the dermantlogist. So I went
- 45:23Speaker 1: to my Derman Talegest for the advice. Um also the
- 45:26Speaker 1: doctor's note to give to my school so I wouldn't
- 45:28Speaker 1: have to really shave too much. Just keep it a
- 45:31Speaker 1: little you know, closer, but you know, so they wonn't
- 45:33Speaker 1: really you know, notice it. But uh, the best that
- 45:36Speaker 1: would be the person who I I attend to for advice. First,
- 45:39Speaker 1: I had to go on the medical side. I'm like,
- 45:40Speaker 1: wait a minute, this is I don't want to continue
- 45:42Speaker 1: to you know, mess up my skin. So once uh,
- 45:45Speaker 1: once graduation came uh and I was I was a
- 45:48Speaker 1: freeman from high school. I embraced that here, I know,
- 45:52Speaker 1: because I have the same problem, Like if you put
- 45:54Speaker 1: a razor on my face, I would break out, you know.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I I used an electric raiser all my life, you know,
- 46:00Speaker 1: because that's the only way I can actually shave around
- 46:03Speaker 1: my neckline with which you know, when you have a beard,
- 46:05Speaker 1: that's where you shave, and that's where there's a general
- 46:07Speaker 1: tendency to bump up although your neckline and things of
- 46:10Speaker 1: that nature. So I know that I know you're having
- 46:13Speaker 1: to deal with That was a pretty frustrating period for
- 46:16Speaker 1: me to admit that this is how I have to
- 46:18Speaker 1: deal with my my hair facial hair conditions, because so
- 46:22Speaker 1: many people don't. They just look at facial hair and
- 46:24Speaker 1: think it's just a simple process, and it's really a
- 46:26Speaker 1: lot more complicated than that. Correct, Oh yeah, sir. And
- 46:30Speaker 1: on top of that, I'm still in the stage of
- 46:32Speaker 1: almost puberty. I mean fourteen, the ages were between maybe
- 46:37Speaker 1: elevenists to fourteen fifteen, So I have you know, had
- 46:40Speaker 1: acne also in high school. So with sad on the
- 46:43Speaker 1: top of this, I'm like, no, no, I can't, I
- 46:45Speaker 1: can't do this. I can I can't. I can't. Right,
- 46:50Speaker 1: And so so as you, as you, as you go
- 46:52Speaker 1: through life, you you you, you dealt with this through
- 46:54Speaker 1: high school. Now it's on the college and like, so
- 46:56Speaker 1: you have a full beard. When did the entrepreneurs side
- 46:59Speaker 1: of you started to develop out of this? Well? I
- 47:03Speaker 1: always as a kid watching my parents, who are both entrepreneurs,
- 47:06Speaker 1: I've always had that in my blood. Never knew what
- 47:09Speaker 1: journey was gonna take me. But fast forward once I'm
- 47:12Speaker 1: in college. Um, I had a beard. As a college sophomore,
- 47:15Speaker 1: had a beard. I love my beard, and I wanted to,
- 47:18Speaker 1: you know, find out how much how how can I
- 47:21Speaker 1: maintain it? So I started purchasing a lot of beer
- 47:24Speaker 1: care products. Some were okay, a lot weren't okay. And um,
- 47:27Speaker 1: I'm spending my money months to month on beercare products.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Money that was, that was that was my weekend money.
- 47:33Speaker 1: That was. That was my turn. I turned on money.
- 47:36Speaker 1: So I'm like, wait a minute, Wait a minute, Wait
- 47:38Speaker 1: a minute. So I did my own research on various
- 47:41Speaker 1: essential oils, utters and all natural products. And I also
- 47:44Speaker 1: had you know, close excuse me close friends that were
- 47:47Speaker 1: new to the beard community, so they were kind of
- 47:49Speaker 1: like my testers. So I started to make, you know,
- 47:51Speaker 1: whip it up in the kitchen and um made it
- 47:54Speaker 1: for myself as well as my friends, and got great reviews.
- 47:56Speaker 1: And for me, I'm like, okay, I got great reviews. Okay,
- 47:59Speaker 1: that's good. That's that. Then I'm walking around campus. Uh
- 48:02Speaker 1: you know, I look in all different directions north, south, east, west,
- 48:05Speaker 1: and I realized I'm looking at guys with beard, gotees mustaches.
- 48:09Speaker 1: So right then and there, I knew it was a
- 48:11Speaker 1: market for it. And that's pretty much where I said, okay,
- 48:14Speaker 1: let me write down my business plan. And from there
- 48:17Speaker 1: on until graduation came, I took the lease of faith
- 48:19Speaker 1: in Mons online store November of Wow. Congratulations, By the way,
- 48:24Speaker 1: first of all, let's let's let's go back to this.
- 48:26Speaker 1: I'm in the kitchen, just whipping something up. I get
- 48:31Speaker 1: a lot of guests who come on my show with
- 48:33Speaker 1: that same philosopher, you know what, they because you know,
- 48:36Speaker 1: because your degree was in what your degree was h
- 48:38Speaker 1: what my degree was in health and wellness, health and
- 48:41Speaker 1: once I wanted to pursue athletic training. So I've always
- 48:44Speaker 1: had a passion for the human body. So I had
- 48:47Speaker 1: to take because I'm trying to I'm trying to get
- 48:48Speaker 1: to this, I'm trying to get to this part in
- 48:50Speaker 1: the kitchen, just whipping this up. You know what? You
- 48:53Speaker 1: know what, what were you whipping up? Man? Were you
- 48:56Speaker 1: I got me some baby all over here? I got
- 48:58Speaker 1: me some Jergins, I got me him. You know what
- 49:00Speaker 1: were you whipping up in the kitchen? Man? They got
- 49:02Speaker 1: to this point, not trying to give away your trade secrets,
- 49:05Speaker 1: but definitely just to say you whipped up something and
- 49:07Speaker 1: then you just slapped in on your face and you
- 49:09Speaker 1: started smile, and then everybody starts smiling with you. What
- 49:12Speaker 1: because it wasn't sticky? You know, you know, because I
- 49:14Speaker 1: use your product, it doesn't it's not sticky. It's you know,
- 49:18Speaker 1: it's shines and you know I can put things, you know,
- 49:21Speaker 1: it's really a really, really great product. So let's talk
- 49:24Speaker 1: about the early stages of you and in the kitchen
- 49:26Speaker 1: whipping stuff up. Okay, well, various butters and all that,
- 49:32Speaker 1: all natural essential oils. That's that's that was my main
- 49:35Speaker 1: ingrediments I was opening up. I can't you know, I
- 49:36Speaker 1: can't give any sense out, but uh, but things like
- 49:40Speaker 1: bees wax. I was researching things that were good for
- 49:43Speaker 1: hair textures and good for our skin. Make sure it
- 49:47Speaker 1: had all the right vitamins that can help nourish and
- 49:50Speaker 1: help help take care of our beers. Right now, let's
- 49:54Speaker 1: talk about your product. You have it. How could your
- 49:57Speaker 1: product help men in the bearded community, because you know,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you know, yeah, James James Harden, you know it's really
- 50:04Speaker 1: NBA the beer, which I really I don't know that
- 50:06Speaker 1: excites you because that means the bears are being more
- 50:09Speaker 1: and more popular and the board beers are not just
- 50:11Speaker 1: tied to any particular ethnic group either, and so so
- 50:15Speaker 1: so the branding of the beer is just like Michael
- 50:18Speaker 1: Jordan's came along in the eighties and they made the
- 50:20Speaker 1: ball head popular, and now James Beard, James James Harden
- 50:24Speaker 1: is making the beer popular in the NBA and and
- 50:27Speaker 1: that that's hitting that millennial market share that you want,
- 50:30Speaker 1: because I always tell people you get your customers earlier
- 50:32Speaker 1: to stay with you forever. And so how would the
- 50:35Speaker 1: question back to us, how would your product help men
- 50:37Speaker 1: in the bear of the community. We'll help all around
- 50:41Speaker 1: first with cleansinginess. It will keep it nice and clean,
- 50:45Speaker 1: a great very moisturized and all around maintained because I
- 50:48Speaker 1: always tell people, remember, a clean beard is a healthy beard,
- 50:52Speaker 1: and that will that will prevent because our facial hair
- 50:55Speaker 1: is the magnetsu bacteria and greasely. You want to help
- 50:58Speaker 1: maintain that because if you don't, material will sometimes will
- 51:03Speaker 1: lead to irritation to the skin and might lead to infection.
- 51:06Speaker 1: And right, it's little things like that that that you
- 51:11Speaker 1: don't even realize they the overall. You know, if you're
- 51:16Speaker 1: lazy with you know, it can go back to your
- 51:18Speaker 1: facial hair. Just if you don't have facial hair, you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: just not washing your face. Now you got hair on
- 51:23Speaker 1: the face, which means that's a double because you have
- 51:26Speaker 1: to worry about your skin drying underneath your beard. And
- 51:31Speaker 1: so talk about your product in general, how you you
- 51:36Speaker 1: know got I got because I've gotten several kids from you,
- 51:38Speaker 1: and I bought a couple of kids where they have
- 51:40Speaker 1: the brush, they have the comb, they have certain oils,
- 51:43Speaker 1: they have certain sometimes talk about the whole process of
- 51:47Speaker 1: putting together the brand. I'm talking to, Uh having excuse me.
- 51:52Speaker 1: Arrington Gavin, who's the CEO of Rugged Evolution, is a
- 51:55Speaker 1: bearded bearded hair Caroline and he were talking about the
- 51:59Speaker 1: whole process of in Seen, he launched an online store.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I am a user of his products. I'm a believer
- 52:06Speaker 1: of his products. Uh. If you go online, you see
- 52:09Speaker 1: the quality of the art work, You see the quality
- 52:13Speaker 1: of the website, which is always really key when people
- 52:16Speaker 1: launched their brands because that's the first line of experience.
- 52:19Speaker 1: When you start to put your brand out. How does
- 52:21Speaker 1: it look online? How does it look on your smartphone?
- 52:23Speaker 1: How does it look on your large scream laptop or desktop.
- 52:27Speaker 1: So now we'ret the point now where you have a
- 52:29Speaker 1: product out there, how do you start developing the lines
- 52:33Speaker 1: within your product? Well, first, first what I did made
- 52:38Speaker 1: sure I had my business plan out on paper, and
- 52:41Speaker 1: then I h made sure that there first was a
- 52:44Speaker 1: market for it. And this is this is all that
- 52:47Speaker 1: for them. While I was in college, made sure it
- 52:49Speaker 1: was a market spard then of course building on UH,
- 52:52Speaker 1: building on a great excuse me, a marketing team that
- 52:55Speaker 1: can help with the marketing and the finances. The H
- 52:58Speaker 1: TO main companon on its incorporated and being trademarked UH,
- 53:03Speaker 1: and the to the two different UH for anybody that's
- 53:06Speaker 1: not too familiar with it. Being incorporated will help you
- 53:09Speaker 1: in your state, They'll protect your name within your state.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Being trademark will help you around the country. So that
- 53:15Speaker 1: was my main focus as far as building building that
- 53:18Speaker 1: brand UM. But but given building that side UH, as
- 53:22Speaker 1: far as within my UH, within Rugged evolution, I wanted
- 53:26Speaker 1: to first have the quota that UH you can whether
- 53:30Speaker 1: you're a man of UH, whether you're a labor worker
- 53:32Speaker 1: or work in corporate America, you can still be a
- 53:35Speaker 1: man of distinction and rocket well groomed beers. Your brand
- 53:39Speaker 1: can be built by itself. You know, it has to
- 53:41Speaker 1: be UH. You know, it has to be the customers
- 53:43Speaker 1: that you have, the employees that you bring on board,
- 53:46Speaker 1: You're inner circle. They all have to think forward and
- 53:49Speaker 1: be forward thinking about what you're trying to do with
- 53:51Speaker 1: your brand. Again, I'm so happy for you. Samantha is
- 53:54Speaker 1: gonna contact you. We're gonna do that Cyber Monday with
- 53:56Speaker 1: Sean McDonald Cyber Monday. I want to drop yours right
- 53:59Speaker 1: into the newsletter if we're gonna get it out and
- 54:01Speaker 1: then uh and just watch your brain continue grow again.
- 54:04Speaker 1: I'm talking to Arrington Gavin, the CEO a Rugged Evolution Incorporated,
- 54:09Speaker 1: My man again. Congratulations. Our relationship will continue to grow
