- 1:00Speaker 1: with Dr Perry, a new daytime syndication talk show from
- 1:03Speaker 1: CBS Television Distribution starring my man Dr Steve Perry and
- 1:07Speaker 1: respected educating and advocate Best known for creating educational opportunities
- 1:11Speaker 1: for children. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, Dr Steve Perry.
- 1:17Speaker 1: My main man, How you man? How you mad? It's
- 1:21Speaker 1: wild to talk to you when we ain't both sweat
- 1:23Speaker 1: and burning up like living comfortably? Oh man? First of all,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I saw the promo. I didn't even know about the show. Okay,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and so I'm watching I'm watching television. I just see
- 1:36Speaker 1: it's doctor, Steve said, my man. I just went, Steve,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I do the doctor. You know. And when you see
- 1:43Speaker 1: people and you buy yourself and your house, you want
- 1:45Speaker 1: to go, I'm by myself. Who am I going to
- 1:47Speaker 1: confirm this with? Right? Right? Right? Congratulations man, Because I
- 1:52Speaker 1: know how long we've talked about people are different. Networks
- 1:56Speaker 1: have have have sat down what you said, you had
- 1:59Speaker 1: to said you have the ability, said they want to
- 2:02Speaker 1: put you in the position to do what you're doing. Now,
- 2:04Speaker 1: tell us about their journey. They We're gonna go back
- 2:06Speaker 1: to our history together to let everybody know this is
- 2:09Speaker 1: not an individual who just got a shot. You've nurtured
- 2:12Speaker 1: this through your your craft, through your education, through your
- 2:15Speaker 1: hard work. But tell us how did this show, Tip
- 2:17Speaker 1: talk show come about? Well, it's CBS reached out. Um,
- 2:22Speaker 1: they asked me if if I want to do a
- 2:25Speaker 1: TV show, and I didn't. I thought they said c VS.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I thought it was the drug store. I said, notice
- 2:34Speaker 1: and no CBS. Oh wow, yeah, that sounds cool. So
- 2:38Speaker 1: and it began as a really as a as an
- 2:43Speaker 1: idea of a trio of a of a show in
- 2:46Speaker 1: which there was a bunch of people on the show
- 2:50Speaker 1: doing a format similar to what you've seen, but there
- 2:52Speaker 1: were men and women, me and two other means two
- 2:54Speaker 1: women and UH went out there and they decided that
- 2:58Speaker 1: they just want to do the show just me, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: so Fox said they want to give it a shot.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Fox put us up there for ten days and now
- 3:05Speaker 1: we're in the waiting phase of the game to find
- 3:08Speaker 1: out if Fox wants to move forward or if they
- 3:10Speaker 1: want to keep doing what they've been doing. Talk about
- 3:12Speaker 1: gossip all day, right, right. So I didn't sit down
- 3:17Speaker 1: with the EP that you have that were you involved
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the selection process of EP the storyline? So I
- 3:24Speaker 1: wasn't involved with the selection of the stories, but I
- 3:29Speaker 1: was involved with the framing of the narrative. They gave
- 3:35Speaker 1: me quite a bit of latitude in terms of discussing
- 3:38Speaker 1: what I wanted to discuss and approaching that the problems
- 3:40Speaker 1: from the perspective that I have. So they were very
- 3:44Speaker 1: very open to that, which was cool. Um. And what
- 3:49Speaker 1: was funny was after the first day of shooting, Um,
- 3:53Speaker 1: midway through it, I should say, they just cut the
- 3:56Speaker 1: telepromped off. They said, he ain't reading anyway, We just
- 4:00Speaker 1: wasted our man is not reading anything that we've written
- 4:04Speaker 1: up in solf with the person who's doing tele go home. Now. Yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 1: it was cool. It was cool. Well, because that's great
- 4:12Speaker 1: because you're doing it from your point of view. And
- 4:14Speaker 1: so I always tell people that a lot of people
- 4:17Speaker 1: in television who have really got a lot of great
- 4:20Speaker 1: resumes to produce talent. You have to let the talent win.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That's how you get long term success. If you're not,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm proud you did that because of the fact that
- 4:29Speaker 1: you have to rely on your natural instincts. That way,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Steve you lose you know why, you did it your way.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You did it from your poem and that's and that's
- 4:36Speaker 1: what it is. You know, when lose a draw, it's
- 4:39Speaker 1: like you know you you you meet a girl and
- 4:43Speaker 1: she decides she wants to go in a different direction,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and you see it with this dude and he's a clown,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and you think, Yep, even if she didn't choose me,
- 4:52Speaker 1: what she chose is so vastly different than me that
- 4:54Speaker 1: I don't even aspire to be that. I'm comfortable with
- 4:57Speaker 1: her going with him and not me. Same thing is
- 5:00Speaker 1: true with this TV stuff. If they go with us, dope,
- 5:04Speaker 1: if they don't, dope. I have a job. It's a
- 5:07Speaker 1: good job. I get to work with children every single day.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm in in our school in Harlem right now, and
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know, discussing things that matter like where what building
- 5:18Speaker 1: we're gonna be in over our school and the Bronx
- 5:21Speaker 1: and taking a look at uh. Before I came in
- 5:25Speaker 1: the office, I was next door because we have a
- 5:29Speaker 1: sub in there. And apparently substill means the same thing
- 5:32Speaker 1: it always means, which is lose your damn mind when
- 5:34Speaker 1: you're in class or tiden up some folks next door.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So if I have to pause the conversation because I
- 5:41Speaker 1: really do have a job where I really do still
- 5:43Speaker 1: work with kids, as you know as well. Absolutely just
- 5:47Speaker 1: a little history on that Dr Stephen Perry and I, um,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, it goes back to Steve Harvey in our
- 5:52Speaker 1: relationship when I was manager Steve and running the UH
- 5:56Speaker 1: all the charitable arms of the Steve as well as
- 5:59Speaker 1: the morning show. Whenever we had an education issue that
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm more I'm one person I put on the phone
- 6:04Speaker 1: was Dr Steve Party. You know now, I always appreciate that, brother,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and it's in this you know, You've always been cool
- 6:12Speaker 1: to me, and you've always been the same to me,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and I think what is most important in life. Recently
- 6:21Speaker 1: had something very very close to me and uncle mind
- 6:23Speaker 1: passed away and what, um, what I've learned, what what
- 6:28Speaker 1: his passing has confirmed, is that what we're really doing, Rashan,
- 6:34Speaker 1: is we are populating our funeral. Meaning the way you
- 6:39Speaker 1: live is the way you're gonna go out and people
- 6:42Speaker 1: will remember you as you were. You can't. You can
- 6:46Speaker 1: only right so much of the narrative until at one
- 6:50Speaker 1: point the truth makes this way out. And as far
- 6:52Speaker 1: as you and I go, you've been cool with me
- 6:55Speaker 1: and have always talked about you in particulars typically talked
- 7:00Speaker 1: about me needing to be your daytime TV. Absolutely the
- 7:03Speaker 1: conversation to you and I've had at least three times. Absolutely,
- 7:05Speaker 1: we're gonna continue We're going to a break here. I'm
- 7:08Speaker 1: talking to Dr Steve Perry. Uh, I call a number
- 7:11Speaker 1: one to educate. I don't care if have problems in Chicago.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I don't care if I have problems in New York
- 7:14Speaker 1: and Los Angeles. I called him because, guess what, to me,
- 7:16Speaker 1: he was the truth. We will be back with more
- 7:19Speaker 1: money making conversation with Dr Steve Perry. Hi, this ra
- 7:24Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. You're listening to money making conversations. UH, very
- 7:28Speaker 1: popular money making conversation. It always amazes me that an
- 7:32Speaker 1: idea that I started just to promote myself a six
- 7:35Speaker 1: week has evolved in almost a two year platform of
- 7:39Speaker 1: motivation and uh information to everyday people on the phone.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Is UH. One of my my dear friends, my dear
- 7:46Speaker 1: friends in the business of education is Dr Steve Perry.
- 7:49Speaker 1: He's one of the most sought after educators in America,
- 7:52Speaker 1: widely respected by grassroot community members and internationally renowned leaders.
- 7:56Speaker 1: He's he's chrismatic and compelling force. Is truly, truly and inspiration.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The reason I say that is that every year when
- 8:03Speaker 1: he was speaking at the Disney Dreamers Academy is always
- 8:07Speaker 1: in late February early March hosted by Steve Harvey Ess Magazine.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He would go on stage and it's almost like when
- 8:15Speaker 1: you see people doing something that you can't do, or
- 8:17Speaker 1: you can do it, but not as well as he
- 8:19Speaker 1: does it. It's like watching Lebron, you know. It's it's
- 8:22Speaker 1: basketball players on the court with Lebron know they can't
- 8:24Speaker 1: do with Lebron does. And when I would see him
- 8:26Speaker 1: articulate in any speech, any format, in a public form,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he always always went as a bad man right there.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So Dr Perry, I gotta give you your juice. You're bad.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Appreciate that. I appreciate that, you know. I was listening
- 8:41Speaker 1: to I remember being man. I remember being in my
- 8:46Speaker 1: mid twenties and I heard Atlantis Morris set uh in
- 8:51Speaker 1: with that album that she had or CD that she
- 8:54Speaker 1: had called Jagged Little Pill. I remember thinking, as she sang,
- 9:00Speaker 1: this woman is doing exactly what she was put on
- 9:03Speaker 1: this earth to do. And my objective is to do
- 9:05Speaker 1: exactly what I've been put on this earth to do.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I feel very, very fortunate. I am so humbled by
- 9:12Speaker 1: the opportunity to work with us like you and people
- 9:16Speaker 1: in the community who are doing what's necessary to move
- 9:19Speaker 1: our community forward to be able to wake up in
- 9:23Speaker 1: my dream is a dream, and I encourage your listeners.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Don't be afraid of waking up in the nightmare of
- 9:32Speaker 1: somebody else's dream. Be completely afraid of waking up doing
- 9:39Speaker 1: something that somebody else should be doing, not you, because
- 9:45Speaker 1: that fear will drive you into your own dream, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: in your dream things make sense. Um. I've learned that
- 9:59Speaker 1: people who unhappy in their job see it as a job.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Those are happy in their career can't wait to wake
- 10:08Speaker 1: up to be part of it. Just can't wait. Understand
- 10:11Speaker 1: that you know, as you well know, you don't get
- 10:14Speaker 1: from small clubs to arenas by invitation. You have to
- 10:21Speaker 1: make a path. You have to blaze a trail. And
- 10:26Speaker 1: there are a lot of people tell jokes. I mean
- 10:28Speaker 1: a lot of people, a lot of people, and a
- 10:30Speaker 1: lot of funny people. I got schools full of funny
- 10:32Speaker 1: kids to damn funny. Sometimes they need to chill with
- 10:35Speaker 1: the funny. Anybody paying their little behind to be funny.
- 10:38Speaker 1: They just need to be a little more serious. But
- 10:41Speaker 1: that's how they built. But few people will be able
- 10:44Speaker 1: to turn that into a career, and even feel will
- 10:46Speaker 1: be able to be successful at it. But The same
- 10:48Speaker 1: is true for every career, just because you have a
- 10:51Speaker 1: job to be on top. To be on top, you
- 10:55Speaker 1: gotta be prepared to do things that nobody else is
- 10:58Speaker 1: prepared to do, eat things that nobody to Prepettiti and
- 11:02Speaker 1: I literally mean that, both figuratively and literally, meaning that
- 11:06Speaker 1: there are things that you have to put up with
- 11:09Speaker 1: on the road to the top that most folks say, na, na, no, No,
- 11:14Speaker 1: I ain't sleeping on the park bench doing that. I
- 11:16Speaker 1: don't care what you say. I'm not doing that. I'm
- 11:18Speaker 1: not I'm not gonna sleep in the car. I'm not
- 11:21Speaker 1: gonna do that. I don't care what you say, I'm
- 11:24Speaker 1: not doing that. That's crazy, okay, because the person who
- 11:27Speaker 1: sleeping another park bench on the way to the gig
- 11:31Speaker 1: is the one who's gonna get to get the gig.
- 11:33Speaker 1: The one who needs to be in the bed, who
- 11:35Speaker 1: needs to have heat on at night, ain't gonna get
- 11:38Speaker 1: it when you're grinding. When you're grinding. The same is
- 11:40Speaker 1: true with schools. When we when I started the first one,
- 11:44Speaker 1: we started the first one. I look at what I
- 11:47Speaker 1: was in a conversation last week with someone and they
- 11:50Speaker 1: were talking about how much money does it take to
- 11:52Speaker 1: start a school, and they were saying all these numbers,
- 11:54Speaker 1: and I thought, damn, I ain't have none of that.
- 11:58Speaker 1: All the numbers they were saying three million, five A
- 12:01Speaker 1: and I was like, I didn't know you got money
- 12:04Speaker 1: did start? I just figured you just found a way
- 12:06Speaker 1: to start. And I remember distinctly there was a mayor
- 12:13Speaker 1: in the city that we started our first school. It's
- 12:15Speaker 1: a little uh Latino dude. And he used to say,
- 12:19Speaker 1: I used to be in a gang, you know, old
- 12:21Speaker 1: clown and he would shake my hand real hard with Shawn,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and he would like punch me in the arm like
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm you know, I'm tough, like man I was, I'd
- 12:29Speaker 1: act like it hurt. Oh man, man, you bag man.
- 12:32Speaker 1: You hit me too hard. Man. When I'm in my mind,
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm thinking, got to throw this little fool out of window.
- 12:37Speaker 1: But I'm thinking the whole time thinking, all right, you're
- 12:41Speaker 1: gonna get your lips in, but I'm gonna come back soon.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And what you want, you want, your little ego stroke
- 12:47Speaker 1: doesn't mean anything to me. What I need is on
- 12:50Speaker 1: the other side of this. And that's why I'm talking
- 12:51Speaker 1: like eating things that you don't want to eat. What
- 12:54Speaker 1: I could have done when he was being his normal
- 12:57Speaker 1: little self. Is I could have come back at him
- 13:00Speaker 1: like yo, shut up, and then I might have won
- 13:04Speaker 1: the argument. But I wouldn't have a school in you
- 13:05Speaker 1: and I wouldn't know one another absolutely at And that's
- 13:08Speaker 1: the key to what I was just saying, is that
- 13:10Speaker 1: a lot of people put like you said, I want,
- 13:14Speaker 1: I want, I want kind of you start totally You'll
- 13:17Speaker 1: know on and they exceeded. I will and guess when
- 13:20Speaker 1: you lose, because I will have to be the I
- 13:22Speaker 1: will do this. I will heat up early. I will
- 13:25Speaker 1: sacrifice for my family, I will sacrifice for the for
- 13:29Speaker 1: the my social life. I will sacrifice and sometimes in
- 13:32Speaker 1: the relationship if they but you need to explain to
- 13:35Speaker 1: them what while the sacrifice is being made. I will
- 13:38Speaker 1: sacrifice for not living a lifestyle that that I could
- 13:41Speaker 1: live if I do that. And that's really the key
- 13:43Speaker 1: when I you know, the most positive thing that I've
- 13:46Speaker 1: seen is that you you managed to live a balanced
- 13:49Speaker 1: life because I've met his family, amazing wife, amazing boys,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and that's what I'm heted now in my life. You know,
- 13:56Speaker 1: when I stop managing Steve. That was one of the
- 13:58Speaker 1: goals I wanted in my life, Steve, was balance because
- 14:00Speaker 1: I was just on that wheel, just running, run and
- 14:02Speaker 1: run and running, just just closing deals, close and deal,
- 14:05Speaker 1: but never relax and never understanding the value that I
- 14:08Speaker 1: could stop, but you always maintain. That tell us the key,
- 14:12Speaker 1: how have you been able to maintain a balanced life
- 14:14Speaker 1: in your path of success? So to be honest with you,
- 14:18Speaker 1: I don't know that there's such a thing as balanced.
- 14:20Speaker 1: There's alignment. And you'll understand what I mean. When you're
- 14:25Speaker 1: rocking with in their case of a beautiful wife and
- 14:28Speaker 1: children who need you to not be part of your dream,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you will never achieve alignment. Your wife had to understand
- 14:39Speaker 1: that my job is to be on the road. That's
- 14:42Speaker 1: my job, but more importantly, it's my calling. So if
- 14:47Speaker 1: you need me home, there's no way to balance that.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I can't be home and be out at the same time.
- 14:57Speaker 1: So what I what I seek to do is to
- 15:00Speaker 1: be honest with myself and those around me. It's so
- 15:02Speaker 1: funny you say this body. So I was just saying
- 15:04Speaker 1: to my side this morning, is you know they go
- 15:06Speaker 1: to uh it's really so trippy. Um we're riding in
- 15:10Speaker 1: the school today and um, I said to them, nobody
- 15:16Speaker 1: has given more for these schools than you have. Nobody.
- 15:22Speaker 1: They've been nice that you wanted me home to tell
- 15:24Speaker 1: me something, to share a story that you have from school,
- 15:27Speaker 1: or to show me a picture of something that you drew,
- 15:29Speaker 1: or or just to sit and watch television with me,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and I was not home and I can't from us.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna be home for a little while. But you
- 15:41Speaker 1: too have given so much that my hope is that
- 15:45Speaker 1: you see it as your legacy, not that you come
- 15:47Speaker 1: and take over the schools, which would be dope, right
- 15:50Speaker 1: what father doesn't want that to happen, But more important
- 15:53Speaker 1: that you build upon it and whatever you do in life,
- 15:58Speaker 1: that people see that you've got to let a goop
- 16:01Speaker 1: because you were part of something that you paid for
- 16:03Speaker 1: even before you knew you were packed. So for me,
- 16:08Speaker 1: brother Sean, what I think is important is to be
- 16:11Speaker 1: honest with those people in our lives about what it
- 16:14Speaker 1: is that our calling is and then that help them
- 16:18Speaker 1: help them to understand what this we're doing. Also, I
- 16:20Speaker 1: have to be real brother that I've been working with
- 16:22Speaker 1: a long time. As you know, Brother Yusuf Kia has
- 16:25Speaker 1: said to me, I'm so funny we're having this conversation.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So one of the reasons why I did so you know,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you talked about the Disney Dreams Academy. The reason I
- 16:34Speaker 1: did is initially, Rashan, is because you have said, Bro,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you out here running across the country. Your kids all
- 16:44Speaker 1: they see is that you're gone. They don't know because
- 16:46Speaker 1: it is before the TV stuff. You know, when you
- 16:49Speaker 1: when you are doing small gigs, people at home just
- 16:51Speaker 1: know you're gone, and in their mind is glamorous right
- 16:54Speaker 1: in their mind, in their mind, you know you had
- 16:57Speaker 1: In my case, I might you may be at a
- 16:59Speaker 1: small club or bar. I'll made a small college with
- 17:03Speaker 1: fifteen students, you know what I mean, fifteen students in Iowa.
- 17:07Speaker 1: In their minds, it's it's Dad is going off and
- 17:11Speaker 1: he's flying and doing and he's being treated. No, I
- 17:14Speaker 1: am flying the worst class, not first class. I am
- 17:17Speaker 1: landing wherever, and I am driving in whatever to get
- 17:21Speaker 1: and talk to whoever. But they don't know that. So
- 17:24Speaker 1: he said to me, you have said you need to
- 17:27Speaker 1: allow your children to be part of some of this,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and your wife too, because it wasn't always that way. Brother,
- 17:33Speaker 1: in the beginning, and my cousins, you say in the
- 17:36Speaker 1: first beginning. In the beginning, I was off doing the
- 17:40Speaker 1: travel and all that stuff, and I didn't tell my
- 17:42Speaker 1: wife anything. I didn't talk to about it, and and
- 17:47Speaker 1: um much in spite if I'm being really real, because
- 17:50Speaker 1: I thought if she wanted to know, she'd be asking,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and said she wasn't asking, I didn't have anything to say. Hey,
- 17:56Speaker 1: Doc is Rashan. We gotta go now, I know we're
- 17:59Speaker 1: back in touch and see my platform key come back
- 18:01Speaker 1: on my show next month anytime you need to. Okay,
