- 0:08שלום from Camp Yavneh.
- 0:11What's in a name?
- 0:14In this week's פרשה,
- 0:15the Torah tells us the census that was conducted of the Jewish people before
- 0:22we entered ארץ ישראל,
- 0:24and one of the families of שמעון is referred to as זרח.
- 0:32רש"י and the רמב"ן point out that this זרח corresponds to the name צחר,
- 0:39a son of שמעון that we find in פרשת ויגש.
- 0:45Why the name change?
- 0:47So the רמב"ן explains that זרח and צחר both have a similar connotation.
- 0:53זרח,
- 0:54of course,
- 0:54is to shine,
- 0:55and צחר is something which is white,
- 0:57something which is bright,
- 0:59also associated with the צהר.
- 1:01We remember the Tzohar ta'aseh lateivah צהר תעשה לתיבה.
- 1:04So,
- 1:04although the names are not identical,
- 1:08but they do have a similar connotation.
- 1:10The implication of the רמב"ן is that a name is not just a label.
- 1:17It's true that perhaps in English if somebody's name is Harry or Bob or
- 1:23Joe,
- 1:24so there's nothing about him which makes him a Bob or a Joe or
- 1:27a Harry.
- 1:28It's a label.
- 1:37But in Judaism,
- 1:39we understand that a שם,
- 1:41that a name,
- 1:41has some meaning.
- 1:45Along similar lines,
- 1:46the רמב"ן points out the נשיא of בני גד in פרשת במדבר is referred
- 1:53at one point as Eliasaf ben Deuel אליסף בן דעואל,
- 1:58at another point as Eliasaf ben Reuel אליסף בן רעואל.
- 2:03The רמב"ן explains that דעואל and רעואל have a similar connotation.
- 2:08דעואל,
- 2:08that knowledge,
- 2:10his thoughts were about God,
- 2:12and רעואל also has a similar meaning;
- 2:17after all,
- 2:18רעיון is thoughts.
- 2:21His thoughts were about God.
- 2:24We could add that not only does a name have a meaning,
- 2:29but in a certain sense,
- 2:30the name is associated with the essence of the person or the object.
- 2:37After all,
- 2:38we're told in פרשת בראשית that אדם הראשון gave names to the animals.
- 2:47What's the significance of that?
- 2:49So presumably it's more than his thinking up all sorts of random names for
- 2:54a dog,
- 2:55a cat,
- 2:56an elephant,
- 2:57but rather in the wisdom that was granted by God,
- 3:00he was able to define the essence of each of the animals and give
- 3:05them their appropriate name.
- 3:09This idea that a name is associated with the essence of that object or
- 3:17that individual is something which is very relevant to the holiness of the מצוה
- 3:23of תלמוד תורה as we'll explain.
- 3:25We know that the source for the מצוה of תלמוד תורה,
- 3:29the source for the מצוה of ברכת התורה,
- 3:31I'm sorry,
- 3:31is the פסוק ki shem Hashem ekra,
- 3:34havu godel l'elokeinu כי שם ה' אקרא הבו גודל לאלקינו.
- 3:38משה רבינו at the beginning of האזינו says when I call upon the name
- 3:41of God,
- 3:42give praise.
- 3:43חז"ל say this teaches us that one is obligated to say a ברכה before
- 3:48he learns Torah.
- 3:50What's the connection?
- 3:51We understand that havu godel l'elokeinu הבו גודל לאלקינו is to give praise,
- 3:55but how do we see anything about learning Torah?
- 3:57Well,
- 3:57apparently שם ה' is a reference to תלמוד תורה.
- 4:02And the truth is when we say ברכת התורה every morning then we say
- 4:06v'nihyeh anachnu v'tzetze'einu kulanu yodei shemecha ונהיה אנחנו וצאצאינו כולנו יודעי שמך.
- 4:11So again,
- 4:12we see that תלמוד תורה is associated with the name of God.
- 4:16What does this mean?
- 4:18Well,
- 4:19the חפץ חיים talks about,
- 4:22רב שכטר discusses this on somewhat of a regular basis.
- 4:25We know that in the פסוק in ספר שמואל the Torah is referred to
- 4:30as משל הקדמוני.
- 4:32A משל of הקדמוני,
- 4:34of Hakadosh Baruch Hu הקדוש ברוך הוא,
- 4:36which can be understood not only a משל that was stated by Hakadosh Baruch
- 4:41Hu הקדוש ברוך הוא,
- 4:42but also some sort of משל in a certain sense about Hakadosh Baruch Hu
- 4:47הקדוש ברוך הוא.
- 4:48That somehow the Torah on some level is some sort of a משל of
- 4:53a משל of a משל of Hakadosh Baruch Hu הקדוש ברוך הוא.
- 4:56The Torah is closely related and associated with Hakadosh Baruch Hu הקדוש ברוך הוא.
- 5:00Being involved in תורה learning is our way of connecting to הקדוש ברוך הוא.
- 5:07This is perhaps why the רמח"ל writes in דרך השם how critical it is
- 5:12for a person to have proper reverence when studying תורה.
- 5:16He points out that תורה learning is something which could have great influence on
- 5:20our world,
- 5:21bring so much ברכה to our world,
- 5:24but one of the conditions for that taking place is that a person has
- 5:29proper יראת שמים.
- 5:30Why should this be so?
- 5:32Well,
- 5:32presumably due to the fact that the whole part of the importance of תורה
- 5:36is the way of connecting with הקדוש ברוך הוא,
- 5:38so only if we have that proper יראת שמים will our study of תורה
- 5:42be our way of connecting to הקדוש ברוך הוא.
- 5:45I'll conclude with the following anecdote.
- 5:48There was once a meeting of גבירים,
- 5:54of philanthropists,
- 5:56some sort of parlor meeting for the ישיבה in Lakewood,
- 6:01for רב Aharon Kotler's ישיבה,
- 6:03בית מדרש גבוה,
- 6:06currently known as BMG,
- 6:07in Lakewood.
- 6:08And some fellow got up and said that we need to support this ישיבה
- 6:13because we need to provide the ability for leadership of the Jewish people in
- 6:22the next generation,
- 6:24and this ישיבה will provide the leaders of the next generation.
- 6:28רב Aharon Kotler then stood up and said,
- 6:31well,
- 6:31I need to make something clear.
- 6:34It is true that the leaders of the next generation quite possibly come from
- 6:38this ישיבה,
- 6:40but nevertheless,
- 6:40that's not the reason why I established the ישיבה.
- 6:44I established the ישיבה for the sake of people to be involved in תורה
- 6:49study.
- 6:51So certainly we do understand that תורה study is something which does give us
- 6:56the potential to lead the Jewish people.
- 6:58We do understand that תורה study certainly needs to be done ללמוד על מנת
- 7:02לעשות,
- 7:02ללמוד על מנת ללמד,
- 7:04על מנת לקיים,
- 7:05but we need to understand and keep in mind that the very fact that
- 7:11we're involved in God's תורה is our way of connecting with הקדוש ברוך הוא,
- 7:16something which brings great ברכה to us and to the rest of the world.
- 7:22Have a wonderful שבת.
