- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:18Good evening. Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:22I am Deacon Al Lundy. I'm a permanent deacon here in the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:26coming to you every Friday and Saturday evening. No, Saturday and Sunday evening.
- 0:30See, you take a couple weeks off, you forget everything.
- 0:34I'm here Saturday and Sunday evenings from 8 to 8.30 on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:39Been gone for a couple of weeks.
- 0:41Wife and I took a vacation. We only really vacation once a year.
- 0:46And this time, we took two weeks and went to upstate Washington State to the Northwest Peninsula.
- 0:54Actually to Olympic National Park, which is just an amazing place.
- 1:00We've been planning this for nearly a year.
- 1:03And I have to say, I got really checked off just about everything on my bucket list.
- 1:08You would have loved it, John. We saw elk in the wild, black-tailed deer, orcas.
- 1:15I saw three pods of killer whales chasing seals through the Salish Sea.
- 1:21I never thought I'd say that in my life. It was so cool.
- 1:25We're on this large boat chasing whales, saw some humpbacks,
- 1:29and saw these orcas, much bigger than I expected.
- 1:34I mean, I saw them performing at SeaWorld kind of thing.
- 1:39But to see them out in the wild, these things are huge.
- 1:42And they're fast. I mean, they are fast.
- 1:46And so we saw entire families. You can tell the difference between the male
- 1:50and the female by the size of the dorsal fin.
- 1:53The male dorsal fin is much bigger, like twice, three times the size of the female.
- 1:58It's so large, it starts to flop over. It's so big.
- 2:02And then we even saw pups, little baby orcas swimming next to mom, over a dozen of them.
- 2:09Probably in total, we probably saw 15, 16 killer whales porpoising through the
- 2:15water as they rounded up some seals.
- 2:18We saw some seals before they got eaten.
- 2:21We walked tidal pools at low tide in the Pacific where you can go up and hunt
- 2:28through these stacks, these large rock towers.
- 2:31I mean, they're huge rock towers that lift up out of the ocean at low tide.
- 2:36And you find living starfish that you can touch and sea anemone and mollusk and pittocks.
- 2:45Have you ever heard of a pittock? I never heard of a pittock.
- 2:47So there are these These are very small clams about the size of a nickel.
- 2:53Maybe a little larger, but about the size of a nickel. Who are able to burrow into rock.
- 2:59So they'll take a large rock, a large boulder, about the size of a bowling ball.
- 3:05And dozens of these will burrow holes into the side of the rock and rest in
- 3:10the holes, like little caves. They're called pittocks.
- 3:13So we're finding boulders that are filled with pittock.
- 3:19Saw some crab, little tiny horseshoe crabs. It was just, it was an amazing two weeks.
- 3:27So where is God in all this? Why am I talking about this on a program about good news, right?
- 3:32About the good news of Jesus Christ. So where is God in all this?
- 3:36Well, of course, one is just the absolute beauty of nature.
- 3:41A lot of my friends, oh, have you been to the Holy Lands? No,
- 3:44I haven't. Oh, have you been, you know, have you been to Rome?
- 3:47Nope, haven't been to Rome.
- 3:49We travel the United States when we go on vacation. Every year,
- 3:52we try and go to a different part of the United States.
- 3:55This is such an absolutely gorgeous country. We are so blessed with the beauty of this country.
- 4:01And I think when you live in the Midwest, where things are pretty flat,
- 4:06you know, you can go to Starved Rock or something to see a little bit of,
- 4:09you know, some waterfalls and some canyons, but it's not the same.
- 4:14And sometimes we forget just how beautiful this whole country is.
- 4:20And so we love traveling this country. So, of course, one of the things you
- 4:24get out of it is God's creation is amazing.
- 4:29What he has put together for us, because he didn't do this for the birds.
- 4:34You know, he didn't do it for the whales or the deer.
- 4:37All this was done for us. And I think that is just amazing.
- 4:42So much, so, oh, what's the word I want to say? The humility that you have to
- 4:49look at this with, you know.
- 4:51So that's one thing. But the other thing is, and I especially appreciated this
- 4:55since my mother passed away just a few weeks before we left on vacation.
- 5:00God's plan for life out of death, new life coming out of death.
- 5:06You know, having our new life out of our death here with this mortal life.
- 5:11We have this wonderful new life waiting for us.
- 5:14Well, you see that in action in nature.
- 5:18We're walking through, hiking through rainforests, a lot of hikes through rainforests
- 5:23over the last couple of weeks, and you find what's called nurse logs.
- 5:27These are trees that have fallen over, humongous trees that have fallen over,
- 5:32dead, lying on the ground.
- 5:34Maybe they got knocked down by storms, maybe just age, whatever.
- 5:38Lying there on the ground dead, moss begins to form on the bark.
- 5:44Seedlings from other trees start to fall into the moss, and they start to grow.
- 5:51Well, they're on top of this huge log. They're like six, seven feet off the ground.
- 5:56So their roots start to dig into the dead tree, and they start to climb down
- 6:02the sides of the dead tree until they reach the ground.
- 6:05And so these new trees are now, they look like they're standing on multiple
- 6:09legs, like big spiders, right?
- 6:12Standing, feeding now off the dead tree and off the ground, off the nutrients of the ground.
- 6:17And then they begin to grow until finally, after a hundred years or more,
- 6:21the nurse tree collapses.
- 6:25Leaving the trees that were nursing on it standing up on their roots well above the ground.
- 6:31I mean, you walk underneath them, and they're in a perfectly straight line because
- 6:36they follow the trunk of the nurse tree that they grew on. So they're called colonnades.
- 6:42So you see these colonnades of new trees.
- 6:45And you see this all over the place. So as the rainforest is dying,
- 6:50the rainforest is growing. One tree falls, but from that tree,
- 6:54multiple new lives take place.
- 6:57And that's just the tree life. You think of all the insects and the birds and
- 7:02the other animals that use this dead tree for food and for shelter and the way
- 7:06that it gives nourishment back into the ground. This is Christ.
- 7:11Christ died to give new life to so many others in so many different ways.
- 7:17So I'm walking through this. My wife is seeing nurse trees, and I'm thinking,
- 7:22Christ, you know, this is what goes on for us.
- 7:27This is the Christian church growing out of the death of Christ and new life that Christ brings.
- 7:34So God's in this in a lot of different ways.
- 7:37So that's kind of what I took off. And it helped me with the mourning for my
- 7:42mom's passing, knowing that new life will come from this, new life for her and new life for us.
- 7:49I think of all my brothers and our children that now have life and life in the
- 7:55church because of my mother's life. So there's a lot of parallels here.
- 8:00And that's why it's good to get away from the television, get away from the
- 8:04computer, get away from the phone, and go out and just.
- 8:10Really appreciate what God has given us in creation and know that we're as much
- 8:15a part of that creation as the whales and the deer and the trees and the birds.
- 8:22We're part of that same system.
- 8:24And God has intended for us to die in this life and have a new life afterwards.
- 8:31So, if you really want to see that in action, I highly recommend the Pacific
- 8:36Northwest, Ho Rainforest, and all the things we did there.
- 8:41We probably saw eight or more waterfalls.
- 8:45It was just absolutely gorgeous. God is amazing. And we live in a beautiful country.
- 8:50Get out and enjoy it. We did not listen to the radio or watch television for two weeks.
- 8:57It was so cool. I had no phone calls. I had no phone messages for two weeks.
- 9:04The only thing I used my phone for was mapping.
- 9:08It's great for finding your way around and identifying bird calls.
- 9:13If you like the outdoors and you don't have Merlin on your phone,
- 9:17there's a great app to download. It's called Merlin.
- 9:20And it listens to bird calls and tells you what species you're listening to.
- 9:26And you can set it for different parts of the world, not just different parts
- 9:29of the country. You can tell what part of the world you're in.
- 9:31And it has all these, this huge bird library.
- 9:35So it'll listen to it it'll say this is the bird you're hearing shows you a
- 9:38picture shows you the migratory you know where does it migrate to where does
- 9:43it live year round what does it eat it's an amazing thing I set out our first
- 9:49place we stayed was a tiny house cozy house
- 9:53cozy peaceful place in the woods that's the name of it
- 9:56you'd find it on on google and we
- 10:00stayed there the the first four nights and i'd
- 10:03get up in the morning get my coffee uh get my little breakfast roll go sit on
- 10:07the porch and just listen to the bird calls and i had there were hummingbird
- 10:12feeders around us we're getting hummingbirds we had cedar wax wings going back
- 10:15and forth there were red-headed woodpeckers just all kinds of wildlife but if
- 10:19you'd hear a call and you don't know what it is,
- 10:21and you'd look at your phone, oh, it's a Swainson's Thrush.
- 10:24I'd never heard of a Swainson's Thrush before. They are all over Washington.
- 10:28They're like the robin of Washington State.
- 10:32Beautiful songbird, just an amazing songbird. So anyway, God is great,
- 10:36and God's creations are breathtaking.
- 10:41Get out and look at them.
- 10:43Don't look at it on TV. Get out and walk it, even if it's just local stuff,
- 10:48like I said, like Starved Rock, or you can go down, to the south end of Illinois,
- 10:52to Shawnee National Forest. Beautiful place.
- 10:55But get out and get into the world. That's where God's happening.
- 10:59And you can really meet Him pretty much face-to-face out in nature.
- 11:04We're going to take a break. We're going to listen to some messages from some friends of the station.
- 11:09We'll be back with more good news. We'll look at the readings from the 17th

- 13:24Hello, this is Steve Gleason with your one-minute tool for Catholic evangelism.
- 13:27Here's the question for your non-Catholic friend. Has your baby been born again?
- 13:30That is, has your baby been baptized?
- 13:32Well, here's your three best friendship tools for Catholic evangelism.
- 13:35Number one, baptize them. Why?
- 13:36Without baptism, your child is exposed to diabolical and demonic powers.
- 13:40Along with that, your baby is not born again and therefore not a member of the body of Christ.
- 13:45Secondly, obedience. Yes, obedience to Acts 16.33, which says,
- 13:49Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.
- 13:52So wouldn't you include infants and children in that?
- 13:54Some simple research regarding the many typologies of baptism in the Old and
- 13:58New Testament it showed that baptism is not just an outward sign.
- 14:01And thirdly, my take. As a mom or dad, I know you make sure your babies,
- 14:05your toddlers, and your young children are formed with great behaviors such
- 14:08as eat healthy, treat others respectfully, tell the truth, and don't hit your sister.
- 14:12You did all that so that when they are old, they would not depart from those strong values.
- 14:15But regarding infant baptism, you say, they need to make that decision on their
- 14:19own. I think we have a contradiction there, a whopping contradiction.

- 14:28Thank you.

- 14:55This weekend, the readings are for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 14:59Our first reading is from the book of Genesis.
- 15:02Our second reading is a letter from Paul to the Colossians.
- 15:06And our gospel is, of course, the gospel of Luke, because that's the season that we're in.
- 15:12That's the rotation that we're in right now.
- 15:14And all of our readings this weekend focus on prayer, how to pray,
- 15:20when to pray, why to pray.
- 15:23And there are a couple really great lessons in this that you'll hear throughout these three readings.
- 15:29So, let's start with a reading from the book of Genesis.
- 15:33It says, In those days, the Lord said, The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah
- 15:38is so great and their sin so grave that I must go down and see whether or not
- 15:44their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out.
- 15:51While Abraham's visitors walked on further toward Sodom, the Lord remained standing before Abraham.
- 15:58Then Abraham drew nearer and said, Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?
- 16:04Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city.
- 16:07Would you wipe out the place rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty
- 16:11innocent people within it?
- 16:13Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty,
- 16:18so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike.
- 16:22Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?
- 16:26The Lord replied, If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom,
- 16:31I will spare the whole place for their sake.
- 16:35Abraham spoke up again. If I find, I'm sorry, see how I am presuming to speak
- 16:41to my Lord, though I am not but dust and ashes.
- 16:45But what if there were five less than 50 innocent people? Will you destroy the
- 16:51whole city because of those five?
- 16:53He answered, I will not destroy it if I find 45 there.
- 16:57But Abraham persisted, saying, well, what if only 40 are found there?
- 17:03He replied, I will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty.
- 17:08Then Abraham said, Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on,
- 17:14but what if only thirty are found?
- 17:17He replied, I will forbear doing it if I can find but thirty there.
- 17:22Still Abraham went on, Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord,
- 17:27what if there are no more than twenty?
- 17:30The Lord answered, I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.
- 17:33But Abraham still persisted.
- 17:36Please let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time.
- 17:41What if there are at least ten there? And he replied, For the sake of those
- 17:46ten, I will not destroy it. The word of the Lord.
- 17:51I love this reading. To me, this is one of the funniest parts in Scripture,
- 17:57and Scripture does have some humorous parts in it.
- 17:59But I think what this conversation between Abraham and God really humanizes
- 18:07God so much, you know, really shows how in tune he is with his human creations.
- 18:15Here's Abraham who understands that he's nothing, he's ashes,
- 18:19he's dirt, and he's talking to Almighty God, and yet he pushes him a little bit at a time.
- 18:27Why? Because Abraham loves humanity and knows that God loves humanity too.
- 18:34He understands the character of God, that God doesn't want to be an unjust judge,
- 18:40that he doesn't want to destroy the good with the evil.
- 18:44We'll all die at some point, but that doesn't mean that we're going to be treated the same.
- 18:50God makes it clear that he doesn't want to treat the innocent and the evil the same.
- 18:57He'd rather save everybody, but not everyone gives God that opportunity to do
- 19:03that because he still has to be just.
- 19:06You know, if you have two children and one child obeys all the rules of the
- 19:12house and one child breaks all the rules of the house,
- 19:16you aren't going to punish both because that wouldn't be fair because it wouldn't
- 19:21be fair to reward both either.
- 19:23So, you have to treat them somewhat differently when it comes to whether or
- 19:28not you approve, disapprove, accept, or reject their behavior.
- 19:33You want to love them both because they're both your children.
- 19:35God wants to love us all equally, and he does, but he can't treat us all the
- 19:40same because that wouldn't be fair, and God is just.
- 19:45And so Abraham keeps pushing to remind God just how much he loves us,
- 19:52that rather than destroy the whole town, if there were 50 good people,
- 19:56he'll save the entire town.
- 19:58If there's 40 good people, if there's 35, if there's 30, if there's 20,
- 20:01and finally down to 10, if there's 10 just people, God will not destroy the entire town.
- 20:09But that came through Abraham's persistence. And you'll hear it in a moment
- 20:15from our gospel that Jesus teaches us to be persistent too, that God listens.
- 20:22Prayer isn't just magic.
- 20:25God isn't a genie. We ask him to do something and he does it.
- 20:28He's not a trained monkey for us. You know, hop up on the stool and God hops up.
- 20:34No, but God does listen. And if he didn't listen, there'd be no point to prayer.
- 20:40And prayer existed far before the Christian faith occurred.
- 20:45The Jews were praying to God long before us.
- 20:49So they understood that we have a God who listens and a God who answers back.
- 20:54So if we go to the second reading, Paul to the Colossians.
- 20:59Brothers and sisters, you were buried with him in baptism in which you were
- 21:03also raised with Him, through faith in the power of God who raised you from the dead.
- 21:08And even when you were dead in transgressions and uncircumcision of your flesh,
- 21:13He brought you to life along with Him,
- 21:16having forgiven us all our transgressions, obliterating the bond against us
- 21:21with its legal claims, which was opposed to us.
- 21:24He also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross.
- 21:30So here's, Paul is reminding the Colossians that it's not only the Jews who
- 21:36were graced by God, who were loved by God.
- 21:39God loved all mankind, even the non-Jews, even the ones who were uncircumcised,
- 21:47who weren't held to the bonds of the laws of Moses.
- 21:52God still loved them and was still willing to forgive their sins,
- 21:58and all it took was for them to come to God and accept Him. And they do that through baptism.
- 22:06So, Paul's reminding the Colossians, it's not just about the Jews,
- 22:10and you don't have to become Jewish to become saved. You're saved because of
- 22:14God's love for mankind, and you reciprocate that love through your baptism.
- 22:21In our gospel reading, which is according to Luke, Jesus was praying in a certain place.
- 22:27When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord,
- 22:30teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.
- 22:34And he said to them, When you pray, say, Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
- 22:41Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves
- 22:46forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.
- 22:52He said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight
- 22:57and says, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, For a friend of mine has arrived
- 23:02at my house from a journey, and I have nothing to offer him.
- 23:05And he says in reply from within, Do not bother me.
- 23:09The door has already been locked, and my children and I are already in bed.
- 23:13I cannot get up to give you anything.
- 23:16I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of
- 23:20their friendship, he will get up and give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.
- 23:28And I tell you, ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find.
- 23:33Knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives,
- 23:38and the one who seeks finds.
- 23:40To the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
- 23:44What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish,
- 23:49or hand you a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
- 23:52If you then who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your children,
- 23:57how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask
- 24:02Him? The Gospel of the Lord.
- 24:05So we're back to this fact that God loves you.
- 24:09No matter who you are, God loves you.
- 24:11And if a loving father isn't going to do cruel things to their son,
- 24:16then the father of all fathers, the perfect father, God, is not going to go
- 24:21do cruel things to you when you ask for what is good.
- 24:25So Jesus gives us the foundation of the most common prayer in our faith, the Our Father.
- 24:32Now, it's not all here. Some of it's been added to it through the ages,
- 24:37but it's the same message that is, ask God what you need for today.
- 24:41Not what you want, what you need. God will take care of your basic needs, but you have to ask Him.
- 24:48And you have to ask, sometimes you have to ask frequently, because the answer
- 24:53isn't always yes right away.
- 24:55Sometimes the answer's no, not now.
- 24:58If you're eight years old and you ask your father for the keys to the car,
- 25:01a good father is going to say no.
- 25:04A bad father would hand the eight-year-old the keys and say,
- 25:06yeah, take it for a drive, see how you do.
- 25:08But a good father is going to say, no, you're not ready yet,
- 25:11but one day I will give you the keys and I will teach you how to drive.
- 25:17That's how God works with us.
- 25:19But just because you get no the first time doesn't mean stop asking.
- 25:24God still wants to know that you depend on him as God, that you want him to
- 25:28be involved in your life.
- 25:30So the lesson from this weekend is God loves you.
