- 2:44Speaker 1: stay emotionally connected, being able to understand how to provide
- 2:47Speaker 1: a balanced life of balanced relationship, especially when you have
- 2:49Speaker 1: kids in that relationship. One he's a recording artist, hip
- 2:52Speaker 1: hop legend, throw that in there, found up Deep Block
- 2:55Speaker 1: Records and co owner of Juices for Life and Pharmacy
- 2:59Speaker 1: for Life. It's an entrepreneur, author, speaker, Celebrity Baker. Okay,
- 3:04Speaker 1: now all right, now, Celebrity Baker, we wanna talk about
- 3:07Speaker 1: that in a minute, and co owner of New York
- 3:09Speaker 1: City based Juices for Life Juice bar and Pharmacy for
- 3:14Speaker 1: Life plant based wellness products. We have seen you together

- 3:31Speaker 1: what up? Up? Up? Did I get it right? Did
- 3:34Speaker 1: I get it right? Good? Break it down? You break
- 3:38Speaker 1: it down? Liked and I love you? Odd? Just word odd? Right?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Did you are correct? Come on now, come on now,
- 3:53Speaker 1: we're in a relationship. Now, y'all in a relationship with
- 3:55Speaker 1: now Scott. I want to step back for a minute
- 3:59Speaker 1: on you right quick? Uh. I was managing Steve Harvey
- 4:02Speaker 1: from two thousand. Did you ever come to our radio station?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Do we have an interview you? Because I got a
- 4:08Speaker 1: feeling out I met you before. I felt like I
- 4:11Speaker 1: met you too, I was saying that earlier. That's that's
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure we did. I remember
- 4:16Speaker 1: coming up to Steve Harvey show before. Definitely. Um. Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Because I was executive producing, I handled all the town.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I booked everybody because I know I liked you when
- 4:25Speaker 1: I because I like that dude, I remember because I
- 4:27Speaker 1: remember everybody when I when I met him, and I
- 4:29Speaker 1: always had a good vibe for when I met you
- 4:32Speaker 1: and uh and then when they when they when they
- 4:33Speaker 1: were talking about the opportunity to bringing you guys on
- 4:35Speaker 1: the show, I went, I think I know that dude.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I think I met him. Yeah, I believe I. I
- 4:39Speaker 1: just can't remember if I did it by myself or
- 4:41Speaker 1: with a lot because I actually went to Steve Harvey
- 4:44Speaker 1: when he had the radio show a couple of times.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So yeah, that's right, we met then, because you could
- 4:49Speaker 1: not have went to the radio show and get past me. Yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 1: but it's all good. It's all good. Like they're just
- 4:55Speaker 1: passing good memories on the app because what I do
- 4:57Speaker 1: with the show man and this is a conversation, man,
- 5:00Speaker 1: there's a conversation about you're gonna talk about your book,
- 5:02Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the journey, We're gonna talk about
- 5:04Speaker 1: the relationship, but more important to just talk about you know,
- 5:07Speaker 1: the business side, and uh adua get it right? Yes,
- 5:13Speaker 1: good good? You know then you grew up whenever in
- 5:15Speaker 1: the book and said you grew up absolutely no junk
- 5:18Speaker 1: food in the house, only fresh you got to be
- 5:21Speaker 1: kidding me. You got to be kidding. No, I'm not, No,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm not. My dad is uh well, he was a
- 5:27Speaker 1: rassa Rastafarian that comes with an idol lifestyle. So it's
- 5:31Speaker 1: like you don't need any dairy, any meat, um, any
- 5:35Speaker 1: animal products. So no, I used to sneak and I
- 5:38Speaker 1: used to cheat outside ye fresh. So let me ask
- 5:43Speaker 1: you this, what is what do you classify as fresh food?
- 5:46Speaker 1: This is just all I can understand it. Okay, that's
- 5:49Speaker 1: okay for me. It consists of whole foods, so it's
- 5:52Speaker 1: basically foods without any preservative, antibiotics, and any artificial flavorings, coloring.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So it's just as clean eating. So basically, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: just clean eating without any extra whole food ingredients, you know, right.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You know it's really interesting that you know I am
- 6:12Speaker 1: the worst eater, you know when I go out in
- 6:14Speaker 1: the team, I am. I'm gonna lie to you, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but I love my life. There's nothing nekt about my life. Okay,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're happy. I'm very happy. If you sit down with me, stop,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I will order our dessert before I order my mail.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I kid you not. They got a banana split or
- 6:28Speaker 1: milkshake or Sunday, it will come to my before you
- 6:32Speaker 1: guys eaven order a meal. And I'm cool with that.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm just lett y'all know who y'are talking to, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: because y'all trying to We're gonna build up. We're gonna
- 6:42Speaker 1: build on that. You know what you're saying. That's all
- 6:43Speaker 1: I'm saying. That's all I'm saying to you. You know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I don't want to shock anybod We're gonna build up because, um,
- 6:48Speaker 1: what's your show is based on? Like you know what
- 6:50Speaker 1: I mean? The first far as uses for life in
- 6:53Speaker 1: pharmacy for life, Like we have a slogan, right you can.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You can have all the money in the world, right
- 6:59Speaker 1: and I could be dead broke if you ain't. If
- 7:02Speaker 1: you're not healthy, and I'm healthy, I'm gonna enjoy my
- 7:04Speaker 1: life better than you can. As you could be financially wealthy,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you could be the richest guy in the world, but
- 7:10Speaker 1: if you don't, if you're not taking if you're not
- 7:12Speaker 1: making that investment in your temple, in your own body,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you will not enjoy that money as long as you
- 7:17Speaker 1: should be able to enjoy that money. And anything can
- 7:20Speaker 1: happened to anybody on any given day. But it's good
- 7:23Speaker 1: to try to at least practice how to enjoy life
- 7:27Speaker 1: and all the things you can get out of life
- 7:29Speaker 1: as much as you can. And that starts with a
- 7:31Speaker 1: just knowing what you put in your body, like you
- 7:33Speaker 1: know what I mean. That starts with saying, Okay, I'm
- 7:36Speaker 1: pretty sure when I see you, you always look shop.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You know you look shop. I'm pretty sure when you
- 7:45Speaker 1: when you drive your car, you've got the best gas
- 7:47Speaker 1: and the best oil in your car. Like you know
- 7:49Speaker 1: what I mean, I'm pretty sure. Body as many you
- 7:53Speaker 1: wash your body as many times as day day as
- 7:56Speaker 1: you can. You have to care about the inside of
- 7:58Speaker 1: your body as well. So we you just you know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: um our job at Pharmacy for Life and Juice for
- 8:03Speaker 1: Life and it's the Stout family, and it's just to
- 8:06Speaker 1: tell people you gotta know what you You gotta care
- 8:09Speaker 1: about the inside as well as the outside. You gotta
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know, you know what you're putting on your body,
- 8:14Speaker 1: Know what you're putting in your body. Um, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: especially at this time's winning right now, you have to
- 8:19Speaker 1: you can't. You have to boost your immune system. Just
- 8:23Speaker 1: watch what you eat. And you know what I mean.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And that's that's where the that's where the real health,
- 8:27Speaker 1: the real the real wealth is in your health. You know.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's really great. I was just gonna comment on him
- 8:34Speaker 1: because he's he's he's led me, you know, because because
- 8:38Speaker 1: of the fact that you know, I'm an interesting guy,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, because I know my body. You know, I
- 8:45Speaker 1: know if I'm about to get sick, I know, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: I always tell people, and your message about knowing your
- 8:50Speaker 1: body is key. It's very key because because of the
- 8:54Speaker 1: fact that what I want to tell everybody is that,
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, I was super baddy and I haven't dropped
- 9:01Speaker 1: off of my dessert yet. But now I don't eat
- 9:03Speaker 1: meat as much, you know, vegetables over huh, you know.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And I'm just saying, and I don't know why, team,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I don't know why I've stopped. It's just that it
- 9:16Speaker 1: seems like my taste buds have changed. I had to
- 9:20Speaker 1: have a hamburger, I had to have a steak, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: had to have something meat in front of meat all
- 9:25Speaker 1: the time. Now I'm comfortable with you know, brand Cereal.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm comfortable with, you know, any type of good vegetable,
- 9:33Speaker 1: good salads. You know this. Yesterday I ain't even a
- 9:36Speaker 1: nice frozen uh with the waller Milton pineapple banana with
- 9:42Speaker 1: some juice smoothie made that. You know, that's what that
- 9:46Speaker 1: was my breakfast, you know. And so just a random change.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Well you know that. That's why I'm just talking that.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That's why I love styles. When he bust me down,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, because you know he was, you know he was,
- 9:56Speaker 1: He's already he was shepherding me in the right direction.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I'm just letting you guys know, I'm trying to figure
- 10:01Speaker 1: out why is this happening to me? Because he's right,
- 10:05Speaker 1: I'm not. I have no fear of dying. I have
- 10:07Speaker 1: no fear of dying, you know, because I wake up
- 10:09Speaker 1: every day. God gonna get me up. I got an
- 10:11Speaker 1: alarm clocket, like my alarm clock goes up at four o'clock.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I got up, I swear to you at three ft
- 10:16Speaker 1: and nine. Okay, you know, just just my that's that's
- 10:20Speaker 1: my mind. You do it enough, your mind says we'll
- 10:23Speaker 1: get up and so and so when when he started talking,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I started laughing because I go, he's he's telling the truth.
- 10:28Speaker 1: But I got two experts on the phone. Who talks
- 10:32Speaker 1: about juicing, who talks about plant based wellness products. Why
- 10:36Speaker 1: is ra Sean McDonald suddenly making this shift in his
- 10:40Speaker 1: eating habits? It is because he just is this better
- 10:44Speaker 1: quality out that better quality available for me to go
- 10:47Speaker 1: the whole Foods and all these different places where I
- 10:49Speaker 1: go and get products that are not you know, feed
- 10:52Speaker 1: by chemicals. What do you what do you think that
- 10:54Speaker 1: is making that shift to me? Well, that's what I'm
- 10:58Speaker 1: asking you. I'm actually curious. I don't know, just just
- 11:00Speaker 1: being you know, in conversation or reading things or just
- 11:03Speaker 1: imploring and just wanting to change. So normally it's most
- 11:08Speaker 1: people's diet changes, uh come from ailments, you know, or
- 11:12Speaker 1: issues that they have and then they feel inclined to
- 11:14Speaker 1: change their diets, so, you know, or just exposure or
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, just seeing more of certain things or wanting
- 11:21Speaker 1: to feel better. And then after you eat and you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: taste and try certain things, you notice how your body
- 11:27Speaker 1: responds to it. So I guess you, you know, actually
- 11:30Speaker 1: want more of that. So a lot of that starts
- 11:33Speaker 1: to happen. But I don't really know your dynamic, like
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, why, what's Maybe it's the good feeling that
- 11:39Speaker 1: you're good And I would tell you this, I would
- 11:42Speaker 1: tell you this inen I was. I've been doing the
- 11:45Speaker 1: show since seventeen and one. Thank you both for doing
- 11:48Speaker 1: my show. And Morris Chester. I had a book out
- 11:50Speaker 1: it was called it was a fitness book, and he
- 11:53Speaker 1: had a and he had you could lose ten pounds
- 11:56Speaker 1: in ten days and that you know, usually when people
- 12:00Speaker 1: were coming around, sh read your books or if you
- 12:02Speaker 1: send me the tape I watched. I know what I
- 12:04Speaker 1: do not do is saying bag on uh interview And
- 12:08Speaker 1: so so I said, you'll be cool, you know, let
- 12:11Speaker 1: me go and see if I can lose some weight.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And when you get on the radio, I would go, uh, hey, man, wait,
- 12:17Speaker 1: well I lost nine pounds when you got on there,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and so I've lost sixteen pounds since then. It's so
- 12:25Speaker 1: it's so my weight, my weight right now is like
- 12:27Speaker 1: one ninty four okay, and uh one ninety four. This
- 12:31Speaker 1: just this this stays around there. And so now I
- 12:35Speaker 1: don't even do weight anymore. I just do a lot
- 12:37Speaker 1: of stretching. I do. I eat. I eat this good
- 12:40Speaker 1: lifestyle that you guys are talking about, and I just
- 12:43Speaker 1: won't let everybody know that what you guys are talking
- 12:45Speaker 1: about has made me feel better, has my you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you know, everything flows a lot better for me. I
- 12:53Speaker 1: drink a lot more water. Is that what you guys
- 12:55Speaker 1: are preaching, because that's what you were saying. Initial statement
- 12:58Speaker 1: to me styles stop stop it. That's it, Yeah, because
- 13:04Speaker 1: what you're saying, what you're doing life and what you
- 13:06Speaker 1: the time you take out to do what you do,
- 13:09Speaker 1: which is teach and have entrepreneurs on and young successful
- 13:13Speaker 1: people and older successful people, middle age successful people. So
- 13:17Speaker 1: to preach and us to push forward of success, you
- 13:21Speaker 1: have to want to be the best year you can be.
- 13:24Speaker 1: So you feel better with ian clean what you did.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You started the act of doing when you picked up
- 13:29Speaker 1: that book and you lost that ten pounds. That was
- 13:32Speaker 1: the act of you study, just talking about it, thinking
- 13:34Speaker 1: about it, or doing stuff. You started doing things. And
- 13:37Speaker 1: once you start doing things and you start subconsciously and
- 13:41Speaker 1: consciously either or sometimes it's both. Sometimes it's one. Um,
- 13:46Speaker 1: you just start really saying, Hey, I like how I feel,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I like how I'm looking, I like the fact you
- 13:51Speaker 1: know that my energy feels a certain way. And so
- 13:54Speaker 1: that act of doing leads you to keep wanting the
- 13:56Speaker 1: search and do better. And that's what this whole thing
- 13:59Speaker 1: ab out wellness is about. It's not about being us
- 14:03Speaker 1: being goal rules are super knowledgeable people. It's about us
- 14:07Speaker 1: wanting our community is better. And I started with feeling better.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Because once you feel better, or my wife feels better,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and you tell your wife, and my wife tells me that,
- 14:16Speaker 1: we tell look and they tell them on and uncle.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That leads to a healthier community all around and a
- 14:23Speaker 1: healthier just besides you feeling healthy, you want people around you.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So you just kind of want to spread a word
- 14:28Speaker 1: about feeling okay, like you know what I mean, just
- 14:31Speaker 1: bringing balance to a diet. It's not about us going hey,
- 14:34Speaker 1: don't eat this, don't eat that. I eat all plants.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But I'm gonna tell you first before you do anything. Brother,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna tell you just how both beefs, but
- 14:43Speaker 1: I will tell you go to Whole Foods and know
- 14:45Speaker 1: where that beef is coming from. You know if it's
- 14:48Speaker 1: graph fed, no, if it's not grash fed. Like you
- 14:50Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. If I ask you a serious
- 14:52Speaker 1: question like okay, I'm comfortable with I know my I'm
- 14:56Speaker 1: going to Whole Fools. I'm gonna get my plants. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: didn't grow the plants myself. So the plants are tampered
- 15:01Speaker 1: with two so I gotta wash. But I'm feel safer
- 15:03Speaker 1: with a tampered with plant than you do with a
- 15:06Speaker 1: tampa with cat or chicken. Yes, like you know what
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'm saying. I'm pretty sure you would feel the same
- 15:10Speaker 1: way too. So it's just about one of the best
- 15:13Speaker 1: for yourself because really the what the wealthiest you could
- 15:16Speaker 1: be is being the best you you could be because
- 15:18Speaker 1: that energy will spread, your thoughts will get better, your
- 15:21Speaker 1: ideas will get better, You'll feel better. Man. And that's it, man,
- 15:25Speaker 1: Thank y'all. Man, I'm telling you something that this first,
- 15:27Speaker 1: this first interview, we're gonna do too breaks. It was
- 15:30Speaker 1: just for Roushan McDonald, Thank you, thank you, because you
- 15:34Speaker 1: know the thing about it, when I bring people on
- 15:36Speaker 1: the show, it's really about education for me because I don't.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I always tell people I wake up dumb because that
- 15:42Speaker 1: allows me to accept information and it also inspires me
- 15:46Speaker 1: to keep moving in this positive direction. That's what you
- 15:48Speaker 1: just did styles for me, he said, Roshan. Stop and
- 15:52Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna walk out of here with that mentality.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Stop just stop mentality, because you're playing with yourself now.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You kind of like straddling both fences. Here brother, what
- 16:02Speaker 1: you want to eat the bad meat? And then over
- 16:05Speaker 1: here run over and eat the good and drink the
- 16:07Speaker 1: good smoothie. What you want to do brother? The good
- 16:12Speaker 1: car on the car, but over here, you know, and
- 16:14Speaker 1: the meat or the hot dog killing you? What you're doing, brother,
- 16:17Speaker 1: What you're doing? Brother? You know? And you know and
- 16:20Speaker 1: that and that's the would tell me this, because y'all,
- 16:25Speaker 1: this is fantastic what I'm hearing on this call. Do
- 16:29Speaker 1: you guys do this a lot? I'm telling you, this is,
- 16:31Speaker 1: this is magnificent. This is I'm talking about. Man. Why
- 16:34Speaker 1: I don't see a webinar on you too? Okay, we're
- 16:38Speaker 1: doing more things. We're just we're just actually starting to
- 16:41Speaker 1: circulate more. So you can hear more of us. Come
- 16:44Speaker 1: on back and what it? Guess what? I guess what?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Please let me know so I can promote it also
- 16:50Speaker 1: in my social media because I'm telling you I'm wanted
- 16:53Speaker 1: these guys. I wanted them know at all too. Okay,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I've had so much success in my life. People can
- 16:59Speaker 1: come me and go yeah, whatever, I can do it.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Whatever now styles he broke strong on me early in
- 17:05Speaker 1: his interview. Let me just let me just see. You know,
- 17:08Speaker 1: he broke strong on me. Let me tell you something,
- 17:10Speaker 1: young man. Let me tell you something. You need to
- 17:12Speaker 1: calm down. You know you might you might walk out
- 17:14Speaker 1: that dude fall down and never get up because you
- 17:16Speaker 1: don't take care of your temple. That's what he told me,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and that he told me, that's what he But see,
- 17:23Speaker 1: he didn't like. He didn't like. Let me tell something
- 17:25Speaker 1: about what I love when people are gifted, like he's
- 17:27Speaker 1: gifted because he you know, he you know he you know,
- 17:31Speaker 1: because he's performed so many and crowds, and it's beautiful
- 17:35Speaker 1: when you were a performer, because when you walk on stage,
- 17:37Speaker 1: you don't know who's out there, so you have to
- 17:40Speaker 1: shape people. You know, they bought the ticket, but you know,
- 17:42Speaker 1: if they had a bad day, a good day, off day,
- 17:45Speaker 1: you know they might walk out of there. Girlfriend sitting
- 17:47Speaker 1: with him don't want to be with them. Both we're
- 17:49Speaker 1: about to leave it. You don't know what's going on.
- 17:51Speaker 1: You're out there just performing. And so when he comes
- 17:54Speaker 1: on my show, he don't know me. We talked about
- 17:56Speaker 1: maybe we made two a couple of times to do,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but he took it upon himself. Say look, brother, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: is beyond the juices for life. It's beyond pharmer pharmer
- 18:06Speaker 1: for pharmacy for life. This is about what you want
- 18:08Speaker 1: to do with yourself. That's the message that you guys
- 18:11Speaker 1: are delivering, and that's the message I'm taking when I
- 18:14Speaker 1: wrap up this interview in this next break, because you're
- 18:17Speaker 1: changing on that point of view. Absolutely. It's all about
- 18:20Speaker 1: being your higher self as much as possible. Now, you
- 18:24Speaker 1: came on the show up this this book, The Eternal Hike. Um,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know ethel apologize, Yeah, okay, apologize, Um, tell me
- 18:38Speaker 1: about the book before we started asking questions. Okay, Well,
- 18:44Speaker 1: the book is a culmination of a lot um Our
- 18:48Speaker 1: daughter passed away in from suicide and um, that was
- 18:53Speaker 1: my firstborn e styles this her stepdad. Um, so you know,
- 19:00Speaker 1: just that whole situation in itself and dealing with that
- 19:04Speaker 1: and trying to u process the whole situation. For me, Um,
- 19:09Speaker 1: the best, the best way and the best outlet for
- 19:11Speaker 1: me was to to write it, to write it out,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and UM, you know through that a lot of you know,
- 19:17Speaker 1: it's just a lot of self healing, a lot of
- 19:19Speaker 1: self understanding, a lot of self love. Again, just trying
- 19:23Speaker 1: to get to that higher self. So with that, you know, um,
- 19:27Speaker 1: being in the space of wanting to heal and be
- 19:31Speaker 1: open and honest and you know, get through it. So
- 19:35Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna going to certain sections of the
- 19:37Speaker 1: book that that I just took a little lines out
- 19:40Speaker 1: and one of the first lines I grabbed was, I
- 19:42Speaker 1: am writing this book because you believe your story can
- 19:47Speaker 1: help others love themselves more. You can help them be
- 19:50Speaker 1: kind hearted to themselves and have more patience. Yeah, when
- 19:57Speaker 1: you when I when I read that statement, when you
- 19:59Speaker 1: say love themselves more, what do you mean when you
- 20:01Speaker 1: say that? Okay, well, and that there's a lot in
- 20:06Speaker 1: regard to that. Um, I don't think a lot of
- 20:09Speaker 1: people really take the time to understand how far they've
- 20:12Speaker 1: come in life and how much how many obstacles that
- 20:16Speaker 1: they've actually you know, you know, trying from, and they
- 20:20Speaker 1: just you know, just they ourselves off and you know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: keep it, keep it moving for the most part. So
- 20:24Speaker 1: if you can just take some time to appreciate yourself,
- 20:27Speaker 1: how farts come, you can just kind of love yourself more.
- 20:31Speaker 1: For me, but that's how it works for me. Well,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I think I think that understanding. Yeah, I think it's
- 20:37Speaker 1: important that wanted on this show that you both of
- 20:41Speaker 1: you guys have a defined voice, a very defining voice,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and vote for your very articulate and both of you
- 20:47Speaker 1: guys have had enough success in life to be have
- 20:51Speaker 1: an opinion and and share it. And that's what and
- 20:54Speaker 1: that's what I felt the book was sharing. That's why
- 20:56Speaker 1: I'm asking you different questions because I want to make
- 20:59Speaker 1: sure when you leave this interview that you understand that
- 21:02Speaker 1: you both are a blessing and you are a blessing
- 21:05Speaker 1: in with this book, because Let'm just tell you why.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Because of the fact that you know, even though I'm successful,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I will doubt myself because what happens is and styles
- 21:16Speaker 1: can agree some Sometimes you can't go to tell other
- 21:20Speaker 1: people moments of weakness. You can't tell other people. You
- 21:25Speaker 1: can't talk to people by failure because people look at
- 21:28Speaker 1: you different. They look at you different. You can't show
- 21:31Speaker 1: weakness when you're considered a success because people are looking
- 21:34Speaker 1: at you different. There treat you different. And so it's
- 21:37Speaker 1: sometimes that's the part where you you start questioning yourself
- 21:40Speaker 1: and you can question your every path and every decision,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and that's where you that's where the love part comes in.
- 21:46Speaker 1: And I took out of this book not only love yourself,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but have people around you that you're comfortable enough to
- 21:52Speaker 1: tell them when things aren't going good. Are you confused
- 21:55Speaker 1: by something? That was one of the strongest takeaways that
- 21:58Speaker 1: I had in this book. That's great, That's great. Yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and I agree. I agree with that. Um as far
- 22:07Speaker 1: as the vulnerability part, that is that is true because
- 22:10Speaker 1: Styles actually said he that is something he couldn't do himself.
- 22:14Speaker 1: So hem he got still good quiet only man I got.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I was, I was, I was letting. I was actually
- 22:23Speaker 1: just letting instead of win. And I was thinking about
- 22:25Speaker 1: it because it just put me in a place because
- 22:28Speaker 1: we we we as businessmen, focus on business and family,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you know, so reading reading the book for me, I
- 22:35Speaker 1: also got to take that out because even doing what
- 22:38Speaker 1: with what we do with Juices for Life, pharmacy for life, music,
- 22:43Speaker 1: reading the book made me be able to accept me
- 22:46Speaker 1: and more vulnerable to my past, you know, to the
- 22:50Speaker 1: things that kind of you know, carved me and maybe
- 22:53Speaker 1: who I am it maybe kind of look at myself
- 22:55Speaker 1: more and you know, it shows to love somebody and
- 22:59Speaker 1: be with them twenty five years and know how intelligent
- 23:02Speaker 1: they are. But to see their their work and their
- 23:05Speaker 1: artwork make you reflect on your own past was was
- 23:08Speaker 1: something touching for me, especially the Paul was saying, I
- 23:11Speaker 1: couldn't really, I'm not one just by nature to show weakness.
- 23:15Speaker 1: So the book for her to be that open, and
- 23:19Speaker 1: it showed me that being open and accepting pain and
- 23:22Speaker 1: accepting the things that that hurt you really actually make
- 23:25Speaker 1: you very much stronger. Like you hear it. You hear
- 23:27Speaker 1: it in philosophy, coal movies, and you you hear the
- 23:30Speaker 1: master tell the student that. But to get it from
- 23:33Speaker 1: your wife and to actually see it done in person
- 23:36Speaker 1: is it's more open again, especially with like I said,
- 23:40Speaker 1: well what we do we believe in in wellness, like
- 23:42Speaker 1: our brands are wellness. So it was that's something that
- 23:46Speaker 1: made me more well. Like I think we think healing
- 23:49Speaker 1: and food and it's it's success and all of that
- 23:52Speaker 1: is just financial or with food wise, but we don't
- 23:54Speaker 1: often deal what I sold enough on a realistic level,
- 23:58Speaker 1: like she said, loving yourself enough to understand who you are,
- 24:01Speaker 1: what you are, what you've been through and its like
- 24:04Speaker 1: it pretty much very it taught me a lot, especially
- 24:07Speaker 1: with it being my wife, you know. So it was
- 24:10Speaker 1: just odd that I took the same thing that you
- 24:12Speaker 1: took out of it, and even more over to day
- 24:14Speaker 1: and my wife, you know, wow, this is the power
- 24:16Speaker 1: couple I got on the phone will be today articulating
- 24:20Speaker 1: and defining, defining the path that we all should go down.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And so when I when I look at uh, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 1: I'm writing a book. And it's interesting when you write
- 24:29Speaker 1: a book because you start remembering things that you had
- 24:33Speaker 1: actually forgotten, or you start remembering things that you don't
- 24:37Speaker 1: have no value, but it turns out to be important
- 24:39Speaker 1: to know. It's really crazy. It's really crazy when you
- 24:43Speaker 1: you know, when people start sitting down they started to
- 24:45Speaker 1: ask you question. You go, oh yeah I did that.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh well I forgot about that. But but
- 24:51Speaker 1: that part that you forgot about shaped you. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 1: And it's really and so when and so when I
- 25:01Speaker 1: started reading your book, the reason, it was like it
- 25:04Speaker 1: was like it was like we're gonna start at a
- 25:06Speaker 1: traumatic moment and then we're gonna we're gonna tell a
- 25:09Speaker 1: story and moving forward. And it was such a beautiful
- 25:12Speaker 1: journey for me. You know, sixteen got your d d D.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Talking about your boy Fred Mike. You know, even though
- 25:21Speaker 1: you know sudden when styles came in your life after
- 25:23Speaker 1: after board Fred Mike went away. Then he took it
- 25:26Speaker 1: on responsibility when he called him dad, when she called
- 25:29Speaker 1: him daddy and uh, when she was six years old.
- 25:32Speaker 1: That moment right there, I thought, because it was written
- 25:35Speaker 1: in the book, was an important moment in both the relationship.
- 25:39Speaker 1: But how did it impact your styles? When she called
- 25:42Speaker 1: you daddy? Um, it was beautiful, it was. It was
- 25:46Speaker 1: shocking because you've been calling you David all the way
- 25:49Speaker 1: up to that point, A long time coming. It was
- 25:53Speaker 1: a long time coming. It was it was It was
- 25:55Speaker 1: a beautiful thing. I think when um, when you when
- 25:58Speaker 1: you step into a a child, delightful, a woman with
- 26:03Speaker 1: the child already, it's a fine line you have to walk,
- 26:05Speaker 1: especially you know there's a lot of things involved, um,
- 26:10Speaker 1: and you want to you know me, I've had a
- 26:12Speaker 1: step father before us. I know how it feels like,
- 26:15Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So I just always wanted
- 26:16Speaker 1: to be cool, let her know that she has so
- 26:19Speaker 1: in there as a parent that loves us. But that's
- 26:22Speaker 1: not over stepping boundaries and just it's forcing forcing the way.
- 26:26Speaker 1: So for me, it was successful because it was the
- 26:29Speaker 1: opposite of what I had always seen and always seen done,
- 26:33Speaker 1: and it was approach. I think it was beautiful for
- 26:35Speaker 1: me as a young father and a young fiance husband
- 26:41Speaker 1: to be because, Um, the real, the real truth of
- 26:44Speaker 1: it is, we would, we would. We would both compare
- 26:47Speaker 1: how we grew up to the things we thought were good,
- 26:50Speaker 1: the things we thought were bad, things we thought we
- 26:53Speaker 1: shouldn't do and we should do, and things we said
- 26:55Speaker 1: we would do totally different because how it made us feeling.
- 26:58Speaker 1: So that was one of them. And it worked out
- 27:01Speaker 1: to be beautiful and successful and we had a super
- 27:06Speaker 1: dope bond, like you know what I mean. And and
- 27:09Speaker 1: that's what I'm saying. There's just moments like that that
- 27:11Speaker 1: I kept pulling out, you know, in the in the
- 27:14Speaker 1: in the book. You know, you know, I thought it
- 27:17Speaker 1: was a great moment when you talking about how your
- 27:18Speaker 1: dad said get out, get out, you know, and you know,
- 27:23Speaker 1: because that was just that. That's a dad, that's a
- 27:25Speaker 1: dad saying, hey, you know you want to be grown.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you grown. I'm gonna show you grown. Yeah. Um,
- 27:33Speaker 1: you know a lot of things and they are relevant.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Certain things are relevant to others, you know more than others. Um,
- 27:39Speaker 1: because to me, just even reflecting back on it, that
- 27:42Speaker 1: that that a little six year old thing was huge
- 27:44Speaker 1: in my life in terms of her calling you know
- 27:47Speaker 1: him daddy. But you know, to a lot of people
- 27:49Speaker 1: are probably irrelevant, but it is a real kind of
- 27:52Speaker 1: significant point. You know, it is very significant, especially as
- 27:56Speaker 1: um first step dad, especially for me, you know so too, Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: you know it's it's all about, you know, emotional growth,
- 28:08Speaker 1: physical growth, financial growth. And wonder line that stood out
- 28:12Speaker 1: for me was like, well, you know, my man's styles
- 28:15Speaker 1: started growing, his profile as a writer. He went from
- 28:17Speaker 1: bad board money to rough ride of money. It was
- 28:20Speaker 1: coming in left and right. And you know, if people
- 28:26Speaker 1: don't understand money, you know, we especially the entertainment, money
- 28:29Speaker 1: comes in ways. You know, it might not be that
- 28:33Speaker 1: steady check now what yours. Being entrepreneurs, you can expect steadiness,
- 28:38Speaker 1: but in entertainment, you know, big check five dollars, million
- 28:42Speaker 1: dollars to million dollars can come your way and guess what,
- 28:46Speaker 1: maybe six months later another check may not come, or
- 28:49Speaker 1: or smaller, much smaller check comes and so when it
- 28:52Speaker 1: comes in, sometimes you don't know what to do with
- 28:54Speaker 1: the money, but spend it? How did you? Because I
- 28:58Speaker 1: remember I had a I had. I was leasing them. Uh,
- 29:02Speaker 1: I was leasing them cell of Mercedes. I was leasing
- 29:05Speaker 1: like three cars. Didn't because I because I could lease
- 29:09Speaker 1: them because I was making that kind of money. How
- 29:12Speaker 1: did you jump? And I was much older than you guys,
- 29:15Speaker 1: y'all were young. How did y'all translate that ability to
- 29:20Speaker 1: mature with your money and move forward? Because one of
- 29:23Speaker 1: the things you did was by a townhouse. It's three
- 29:26Speaker 1: bare room, three bad townhouse were one of the best
- 29:28Speaker 1: investments you made early on. But tell us about the
- 29:31Speaker 1: journey into the money and evolving as young adults. Okay,
- 29:36Speaker 1: well that was one of our first I guess our
- 29:39Speaker 1: wisest person purchase the townhouse. Before then and in between
- 29:45Speaker 1: then and all around then were screwed up. Okay, it
- 29:48Speaker 1: was a lot of a lot of messing up, a
- 29:49Speaker 1: lot of trial and error we learned from and um,
- 29:52Speaker 1: you know, because it's not it fluctuates the money. It's
- 29:55Speaker 1: not really consistent in terms of in the business. You know,
- 29:58Speaker 1: it's crazy. Yeah, and that's part of what, you know,
- 30:03Speaker 1: why we actually started the other businesses because we needed
- 30:07Speaker 1: more consistency, you know. So, um, just taking advantage of
- 30:11Speaker 1: your brain, taking advant of brain. So let's yes, let's look,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I don't want to shift. I want to shift the
- 30:16Speaker 1: book out a little because I definitely want to give
- 30:18Speaker 1: a little bit of attention to the Juices for Life
- 30:20Speaker 1: and the Farmer for the Life, because these are not
- 30:22Speaker 1: onederstand locations. These guys are in multiple locations. Talk to
- 30:26Speaker 1: us a little bit about that, and I go, I
- 30:28Speaker 1: ride styles with Jusice for Life, and now I come
- 30:31Speaker 1: back with you with Farmer for Farmacy for Life. As
- 30:35Speaker 1: you said, it's about full got you, so tell us
- 30:41Speaker 1: about Jusices for Lifestyles Juice for life. Man, we um,
- 30:46Speaker 1: we like cheers for healthy folks like you know what
- 30:48Speaker 1: I mean. We just started to bring up um we
- 30:50Speaker 1: have four locations in the job. God willingly um will
- 30:54Speaker 1: have a location in every state one day. Congratulations. We
- 30:58Speaker 1: just we just we just wanted to bring something to
- 31:01Speaker 1: to the neighborhoods that we knew a food deserts as
- 31:04Speaker 1: they say. You know, um, when you come from our background,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you see just look at stores Chinese food stores, fast
- 31:11Speaker 1: food stores, and we just wanted to provide something that
- 31:14Speaker 1: people could come in and get some balance, touch back
- 31:16Speaker 1: to their roots and things, you know, your mom told
- 31:19Speaker 1: you Apple day keeps the doctor away. You know, always
- 31:22Speaker 1: eat the eat the vegianes on your plate. So those
- 31:24Speaker 1: are things we felt we're lost within our community. So
- 31:28Speaker 1: we felt like it would be just small for us
- 31:30Speaker 1: to show people away because people are often you know, um,
- 31:34Speaker 1: like you say, we like nice things, man, like we
- 31:36Speaker 1: we love I love nice stuff. That yeah, I love
- 31:41Speaker 1: nice stuff. But being a wrap that, we started noticing
- 31:45Speaker 1: that people, you know, they tend to look at music,
- 31:48Speaker 1: they tend to look at Instagram, social media, and not
- 31:51Speaker 1: really pay attention to the inside of their body. And
- 31:54Speaker 1: we like nice things. So we want to kind of
- 31:56Speaker 1: live as long as we can, and we want to
- 31:58Speaker 1: prevent things that you know, Black people don't go to
- 32:01Speaker 1: the doctor and get enough insurance in the hood. So
- 32:03Speaker 1: we just wanted to provide something. Go hey, it's preventitive measures. Uh,
- 32:08Speaker 1: ask some balance in your life, um, and you could
- 32:12Speaker 1: come sit down and and meet with different people from
- 32:14Speaker 1: different communities around the neighborhood and have a good talk
- 32:19Speaker 1: over something healthy like you know. So that was our
- 32:22Speaker 1: goal and we've accomplished it and we got a lot
- 32:24Speaker 1: more to do, a lot more accomplished than to do.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And by the grace of God will get it done.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And if not, those we hope we lay out enough
- 32:32Speaker 1: blueprint for people who aren't following and just take it after.
- 32:36Speaker 1: It's amazing the good your turn. Ah, that's okay. It's
- 32:45Speaker 1: the pharmacy to life, that pharmacy with an app. It's
- 32:49Speaker 1: basically just Juici Life justter company. UM, basically the same,
- 32:55Speaker 1: same method. But what we're trying to do is basically
- 33:00Speaker 1: there's a lot of people that don't have health insurance
- 33:02Speaker 1: and we're aware of that. UM, we try to cater
- 33:04Speaker 1: to those people. We try to cater to Uh the
- 33:10Speaker 1: how should I say? Well, I don't want to say
- 33:14Speaker 1: it's just like that, but anyway, people that don't This
- 33:20Speaker 1: whole interviewee company, she stepped off now he stepped on
- 33:27Speaker 1: sept off. Um. But basically, yeah, Pharmacy for Life is
- 33:31Speaker 1: just you know, since their company. We have vitamins, we
- 33:33Speaker 1: have supplements, we have c we have basically to keep
- 33:38Speaker 1: your immune systems together strong. We have oil, you know,
- 33:44Speaker 1: we have lad of Rock route, we have black seed oil,
- 33:48Speaker 1: we have female we have barertops supplements, a lot more coming,
- 33:53Speaker 1: a lot more coming, you know, I really want to um,
- 33:58Speaker 1: you know, have a twenty two year daughter. And I'm
- 34:00Speaker 1: going to drift them back to the book now because
- 34:02Speaker 1: I definitely want to let you know how that book
- 34:06Speaker 1: affected me. Um. I'm gonna slow down a manute here
- 34:10Speaker 1: so you know, and you know, the nightmare is that
- 34:18Speaker 1: I would have to bury her. And that's a nightmare
- 34:23Speaker 1: that both you two have experienced. And that's a nightmare
- 34:28Speaker 1: that I felt emotionally when I read the book, especially
- 34:32Speaker 1: when I was able to read about your journey, because
- 34:34Speaker 1: like it's like it started, it started. Each chapter was
- 34:37Speaker 1: a growth, an experience, how she grew, how she lived,
- 34:41Speaker 1: what she she was, beautiful, she was, she was popular,
- 34:46Speaker 1: she was always active. People always were coming to her.
- 34:50Speaker 1: You know, it's so no signals, no signs when you
- 34:58Speaker 1: wrote this book. The ultimate message was we talked about
- 35:02Speaker 1: in the beginning, and I'm just telling you how I feel. Um.
- 35:07Speaker 1: I try to talk to my daughter, Uh, I try
- 35:10Speaker 1: to not cut off. And when you know, when when
- 35:13Speaker 1: we have a businessman might can be on the call
- 35:15Speaker 1: with a with a client and her number comes through
- 35:18Speaker 1: our answer. I've always done that because I've raised her
- 35:22Speaker 1: on the I've raised her, my mom was raised her.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I've raised her on the phone. Okay, I have so
- 35:27Speaker 1: I have some clips that I want to give her
- 35:29Speaker 1: one day when when she used to just call lead
- 35:32Speaker 1: notes when she was four or five and six on
- 35:34Speaker 1: the phone. I kept them. I kept there the messages.
- 35:38Speaker 1: So I know the impact of of of a loss,
- 35:42Speaker 1: but a bigger impact of your children and you're burying
- 35:45Speaker 1: them and the what else. And one of the things
- 35:48Speaker 1: that you said earlier early on was that you didn't
- 35:51Speaker 1: want the drama or the trauma to slow your growth. Yes. Um, basically,
- 35:59Speaker 1: what I mean on that is, that's such a a shot.
- 36:04Speaker 1: You know, that's such a big heavy blow that and
- 36:07Speaker 1: from what I've seen from you know, past you know
- 36:10Speaker 1: experiences and and just you know other situations that it's
- 36:13Speaker 1: it's really cycling. It can really be that much that
- 36:17Speaker 1: people cannot move forward. And I mean, and that's how
- 36:20Speaker 1: I felt initially when it happened. I did feel that's
- 36:23Speaker 1: how heavy it was. I felt like there was just
- 36:25Speaker 1: no tomorrow, there was no moving forward. Um. But I'm
- 36:29Speaker 1: very I'm also very spiritual, so just in doing some
- 36:33Speaker 1: deep work and trying to have a real great will
- 36:37Speaker 1: to want to move forward and knowing that this situation
- 36:40Speaker 1: was there to kind of break me into something else.
- 36:44Speaker 1: I don't want to be broken, to be broken into
- 36:46Speaker 1: something else, you know. Um. I kind of used that
- 36:49Speaker 1: and knowing that I've had other experiences, not in bad,
- 36:53Speaker 1: but that will be most likely the worst. But I
- 36:56Speaker 1: just know, like I have to keep moving forward. It's
- 36:59Speaker 1: just that I just I cannot um, I can't stops
- 37:04Speaker 1: and all those things. Yea in the book described the
- 37:08Speaker 1: unbreakable ball between mother and daughter on side note that
- 37:12Speaker 1: they sent over sending you guys are working on a
- 37:14Speaker 1: vegan cooking show. Yeah, we have a couple of things
- 37:18Speaker 1: going on in regards to that. I've been talking about that. Yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 1: I was getting to that. I was waiting for us
- 37:23Speaker 1: Sigo though. You know, he's just a sideline. He's like
- 37:27Speaker 1: a guy. You go, hey, mane go in there at
- 37:29Speaker 1: tack on somebody going in there. They running, they were
- 37:34Speaker 1: too many plays. Let's go talk on somebody. Yeah, we um,
- 37:39Speaker 1: we're working on a podcast, a vegan couch show. Also,
- 37:43Speaker 1: we're working on a few other shows. But we're keeping
- 37:45Speaker 1: in mind of what's actually happening in the world today
- 37:48Speaker 1: with the coronavirus and making show. We take our time.
- 37:51Speaker 1: They'd be mindful stay healthy, playing it out right. So, um,
- 37:56Speaker 1: we would have been shooting already, but we we you know,
- 37:59Speaker 1: post just to be smart, just to be safe, just
- 38:02Speaker 1: to follow the diallines that we need to follow. But
- 38:04Speaker 1: we have a few things coming we Um, we have
- 38:08Speaker 1: a Locks album coming out. Congratulations. Yeah that's coming out.
- 38:13Speaker 1: That should be that should be out five fifteen. Um,
- 38:17Speaker 1: send me your followers on that. Stop. Please send me
- 38:21Speaker 1: some banners, some some drops so I can promote it
- 38:24Speaker 1: for you. Okay, yeah for sure. Um uh, she's a
- 38:29Speaker 1: in on my new my next solo album over here,
- 38:33Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I'm almost I'm almost wrapped
- 38:35Speaker 1: up with that. Um. We're also going to be working
- 38:39Speaker 1: on another book, but we're gonna get that. We're gonna
- 38:41Speaker 1: get the cookbook out first and then she she has
- 38:44Speaker 1: some she has some workers store for you. We don't
- 38:46Speaker 1: like to lay all out through too much. We like
- 38:48Speaker 1: our goal. But I got to talk to you about
- 38:51Speaker 1: this before I go down. In your credit it said
- 38:54Speaker 1: celebrity baker. Yeah, I can talk to you about that. Yeah. Yeah,
- 39:02Speaker 1: don't work Jesus, hold hold up, not hold up not style. Now,
- 39:10Speaker 1: don't don't be like running over me like I'm I'm
- 39:13Speaker 1: sliced bread over here. Bro, you know what I'm saying.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I don't talk. I don't bring up that talk unless
- 39:18Speaker 1: I got some juice. I had my day, but I
- 39:22Speaker 1: gotta slow styles down. You're about to run over me,
- 39:25Speaker 1: you know. But you're gonna see that vegan cookbook come
- 39:32Speaker 1: out from US plant based cookbook. And when we do
- 39:36Speaker 1: the cookbook Gold, we will not forget regularly eaters. We will.
- 39:39Speaker 1: You don't just jump into veganism and plant based. People
- 39:42Speaker 1: have health issues where they can't actually do that. Some
- 39:45Speaker 1: people don't know just how to do things. We're not God.
- 39:47Speaker 1: We can't say how everybody's supposed to eat. So we'll
- 39:50Speaker 1: also just be providing something clean for you to eat
- 39:53Speaker 1: if your meat, either alternatives or we'll just try to
- 39:56Speaker 1: guide you to say, Hey, if you're gonna eat meat,
- 39:58Speaker 1: this is the best thing you could do. But my wife,
- 40:01Speaker 1: her hands are marvelous. Excellent writer, excellent chef. Will you
- 40:08Speaker 1: will you be crying? Let your other power part of
- 40:10Speaker 1: the couple talk. You know. Hype man a hype man.
- 40:16Speaker 1: This is why I married him. Let him go on.
- 40:20Speaker 1: You got a hype man for as a baker. I
- 40:23Speaker 1: can't believe this. That's that's the first time in history
- 40:26Speaker 1: that Baker had a hype man class delivery guy. But
- 40:31Speaker 1: but the legendary hype man though, that's the that's the
- 40:34Speaker 1: crazy part about it, because he's just throwing out that love,
- 40:38Speaker 1: he throwing out that greatness. He thought. But before we go, now,
- 40:42Speaker 1: see you guys. When you guys delivered this this cookbook
- 40:47Speaker 1: or this vegan book or the cookbook or whatever, you

- 45:39Speaker 1: five shows, Standing up, Common shows. There is a Day

- 45:56Speaker 1: nor a Bit, he was Funny as Heck at Norbit,
- 45:58Speaker 1: The Prince and the Frog, and his role as Mr.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Whittaker on the classic hit television series Martin. He's coming
- 46:04Speaker 1: on the show to talk about his career and it's
- 46:07Speaker 1: very funny. Third book, Michael Gold's Motivational Please Welcome to
- 46:11Speaker 1: Money Being Conversations My man, Michael, call you, Michael, call you.
- 46:18Speaker 1: You know, um, you know this, it's it's it's it's
- 46:21Speaker 1: nothing but happiness and memories about our relationship. You helped
- 46:26Speaker 1: me launch my comedy club in Houston. And two when
- 46:29Speaker 1: you come down there and perform one of the big
- 46:32Speaker 1: names I was able to convince to come to Houston,
- 46:34Speaker 1: Texas and headline my show. And and just but you've
- 46:38Speaker 1: always been a giving guy. And when I read your
- 46:41Speaker 1: read your book, I understand I can understand where it
- 46:43Speaker 1: came from. The nature of growing up in Chicago and
- 46:47Speaker 1: and having less but given more. That was that seemed
- 46:50Speaker 1: to be the signal of your whole life. Correct, Yeah, yeah,
- 46:56Speaker 1: I mean I really believe that it's all about giving.
- 46:59Speaker 1: You know, if you want to have something, you gotta
- 47:01Speaker 1: learn to give all to all. If you give everything
- 47:03Speaker 1: that everybody, you don't have so much stuff, you don't hand,
- 47:06Speaker 1: no place to put it. Man, and you didn't. And
- 47:09Speaker 1: so let let's break down your family dynamic. You know,
- 47:11Speaker 1: your father, you know, let's talk about this book. First
- 47:15Speaker 1: of all, the book I'm talking about Michael Golds Motivational.
- 47:18Speaker 1: It's his third book, and it's a very honest book.
- 47:22Speaker 1: You talk about your mom relationship with your father, which
- 47:25Speaker 1: at the time was physical, but your mom was really
- 47:27Speaker 1: the physical person in that domestic relationship. You talk about
- 47:31Speaker 1: being wolf. They were talk into battles, yes, to get
- 47:34Speaker 1: into battles. You talk about get into battles because of
- 47:37Speaker 1: the alcoholism, you know, And and that's something that carried
- 47:40Speaker 1: over to our lives, to me and my brothers. You know,
- 47:43Speaker 1: we all end up having some types of addiction. And
- 47:46Speaker 1: our addiction began came honestly, you know, because my dad
- 47:49Speaker 1: was an addict and his addiction with alcoholism, and he
- 47:52Speaker 1: was just a beautiful man that we just absolutely loved.
- 47:56Speaker 1: But he loved that bottlement, you know. And I mean
- 47:59Speaker 1: if he could he get thing, and that bottle, that
- 48:01Speaker 1: bottle was his thing, you know. And and and my
- 48:04Speaker 1: mother loved him. But he drink up all the profit.
- 48:07Speaker 1: So you know, he'd come home and we wouldn't have nothing.
- 48:10Speaker 1: He'd be bubbling and he were one of them happy drunks.
- 48:13Speaker 1: To the candidate, did he just drink for herself? But
- 48:15Speaker 1: he wants to treat everybody else. So we'd be at
- 48:18Speaker 1: sid that the whole house break broke. My mom and
- 48:20Speaker 1: them would get into the fight. But like I said,
- 48:22Speaker 1: she wouldn't she wouldn't really fight her. She'd fight him
- 48:25Speaker 1: and she was five for even he was six ft three.
- 48:28Speaker 1: She would attack him, you know, and he would never
- 48:30Speaker 1: fight it. He hold up getting hurt, but she just
- 48:35Speaker 1: she just really loved him. Go ahead, I'm sorry to
- 48:37Speaker 1: go ahead. Oh no, no, Mike. This is your moment
- 48:39Speaker 1: with my on my show Money Making Conversation because it's
- 48:41Speaker 1: your book and I want to promote the book. I
- 48:44Speaker 1: read the book. Everything's very fresh in my mind because
- 48:47Speaker 1: it's very vivid book. You know. Let me just some
- 48:49Speaker 1: things that just stood out for me. You know, seven
- 48:52Speaker 1: years old, you know as Star foods, you know those
- 48:54Speaker 1: farty ounces that you would uh, you know, take it
- 48:57Speaker 1: to the house. My first hustle, that was your first house.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Your second hustle was Columbia Records Club. I'll you some man,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you broke back so many memories. Man, I forgot about
- 49:08Speaker 1: Columbia Records. Man. I you remember, I'm Jesus man. When
- 49:13Speaker 1: you when I was reading your book and you came
- 49:14Speaker 1: up to Columbia Records club. I went, oh my god,
- 49:17Speaker 1: I remember that you joined. They seen you all these
- 49:21Speaker 1: albums and then it was for like eleven cents or
- 49:24Speaker 1: something like that was love and sent for eleven albums. Man,
- 49:27Speaker 1: it was unbelievable, you know. And then at each time
- 49:31Speaker 1: I would send for him, I just changed my name
- 49:33Speaker 1: because you know, I was sending for the eleven albums
- 49:35Speaker 1: and then I take them across the street and sell
- 49:37Speaker 1: them at the at the grade school didn't teach us
- 49:40Speaker 1: for like three dollars each, so I was I was
- 49:43Speaker 1: cleaning up. And then after I told the first time,
- 49:44Speaker 1: I'd come back and changed my name. So first I
- 49:46Speaker 1: do with Michael Kay, then Michael Keith, then Keith Michaels
- 49:49Speaker 1: and Keith then Kya Michaels. That changed the let us
- 49:52Speaker 1: around to relock and let them relock. I did about
- 49:55Speaker 1: eleven times before they finally caught on that they kept
- 49:58Speaker 1: sending package in to the same address, like, uh, we
- 50:01Speaker 1: would cut that off. But what a great hustle that was, brother.
- 50:04Speaker 1: But this is why I so enjoyed your book, because
- 50:08Speaker 1: of the fact that it was just bringing back you know,
- 50:10Speaker 1: your your your your car Bearcless Saber Man. It was like,
- 50:18Speaker 1: you know, I I couldn't help, but just keep smiling
- 50:21Speaker 1: when I keep getting the different sections of the book.
- 50:23Speaker 1: And I was going like, man, this like memory lane,
- 50:26Speaker 1: just talking to this. And you was in Chicago and
- 50:28Speaker 1: I grew up in Houston. But we were basically the
- 50:30Speaker 1: same age. But we were still living the life and
- 50:34Speaker 1: enjoying moments. You know, hot water, corn bread, butter milk,
- 50:38Speaker 1: Jim Teason only thing I took a fence on in
- 50:40Speaker 1: your book. Man, your daddy loved butter milk. I love
- 50:43Speaker 1: butter milk. My car. I couldn't do butter milk. Ain't
- 50:48Speaker 1: butter milk, spoiled milk. It doesn't matter. You put a sugar,
- 50:51Speaker 1: that bad boy. You put some sugar that boy in
- 50:59Speaker 1: that's butter milk. And you would have thought he was
- 51:01Speaker 1: a kid in the ice cream store. He was just happy.
- 51:04Speaker 1: If they could see. I was like, I'm not having
- 51:05Speaker 1: no butter. Now what about low on the hall? Did
- 51:09Speaker 1: you eat pig feet cheese? See I'm chidling, see Michae.
- 51:16Speaker 1: I'm just I ain't do chidling, but I love the
- 51:18Speaker 1: hog head cheese. Now the good maybe a little bit
- 51:23Speaker 1: worse than both. From now, I can still eat chidlings today.
- 51:28Speaker 1: But I can't mess with the cheese and crackers. I
- 51:30Speaker 1: can't even mess with that. No boy was come in
- 51:33Speaker 1: with peace feet, and apparently you had to purchase some
- 51:37Speaker 1: bad pair. Yes. So he would come in with hairs
- 51:41Speaker 1: and the hair would still be on, and he would
- 51:45Speaker 1: have him wrapped in newspaper. It wasn't even like it
- 51:48Speaker 1: wasn't even like brown Butcher's paper. It was just newspaper.
- 51:51Speaker 1: They wrapped on me in and he'd come and lay
- 51:53Speaker 1: him on the front room floor and unopened the paper
- 51:56Speaker 1: like he was opening a wonderful floral killer. And it
- 51:59Speaker 1: would be like four past set of PC. I just
- 52:03Speaker 1: run with him home. I just go. I just rather though,
- 52:05Speaker 1: and start running. You know, I wouldn't come back to
- 52:07Speaker 1: it becausen't heating them. Know. You know, My daddy always
- 52:10Speaker 1: said my brothers to come and catch me because I
- 52:12Speaker 1: was always running west thinking I was coming to Hollywood,
- 52:15Speaker 1: but I'm really just going west on for the third street,
- 52:17Speaker 1: you know, and they always just what's on point third?
- 52:20Speaker 1: You'll get it. My brother come and picked me up,
- 52:21Speaker 1: bringing home. I take my whooping in week call of
- 52:23Speaker 1: to day. That was so funny, you said, because it's
- 52:26Speaker 1: just an inch on the map. So I thought, like
- 52:30Speaker 1: Chicago to California Hollywood on the map, I mean three
- 52:37Speaker 1: thousand miles. Man, man this book. I was just letting
- 52:42Speaker 1: everybody know I'm talking to Michael Car. Youre, uh, the
- 52:44Speaker 1: famous Michael Car. Yeah, the Venice beating king to Michael Car.
- 52:48Speaker 1: You gave his donations. When they want Star Trek, start wars,
- 52:53Speaker 1: start start searching, Michael Car, Um, Michael. You know when
- 52:57Speaker 1: I when I look at our relationship, I'm just get
- 53:00Speaker 1: personal right now. When I met Michael Car, you, Michael
- 53:03Speaker 1: Car basically took me on his wings because my car
- 53:05Speaker 1: was famous. When I met him, he was famous. Okay.
- 53:09Speaker 1: He would walk up to all the agencies and he
- 53:12Speaker 1: he walked me in there with him, and I could
- 53:14Speaker 1: I was. And that's why I kind of like learned
- 53:16Speaker 1: a lot of things how to, how to the skills
- 53:18Speaker 1: that I learned later on as a manager and doing contracts.
- 53:20Speaker 1: When I was with him and he would just talk
- 53:23Speaker 1: and here and I just see the agents and how
- 53:25Speaker 1: they would react to him. I was how they would
- 53:27Speaker 1: put projects together, and it was really inspirational just to
- 53:31Speaker 1: see what you were accomplishing and you was doing it.
- 53:34Speaker 1: You were just doing it from a guy who had
- 53:36Speaker 1: a vision who came from Chicago and started performing on
- 53:39Speaker 1: the beach. And that idea came from some guys that
- 53:42Speaker 1: you was watching in Chicago who was doing street performing
- 53:45Speaker 1: and you saw them getting money. You said hey, because
- 53:47Speaker 1: at the time you said you never tell jokes on
- 53:49Speaker 1: the street. But you saw those two guys performing and
- 53:51Speaker 1: the checks they were getting or the cash they were getting,
- 53:53Speaker 1: that changed your mind. Correct in Chicago, exactly exactly. And
- 53:57Speaker 1: then I mean because I was on stages. I was
- 54:00Speaker 1: getting on a little bitty stages making third ourts here
- 54:02Speaker 1: before it ours there, and they was like, oh, you
- 54:04Speaker 1: should come out in the street and do street performance.
- 54:06Speaker 1: I was like, dude, I ain't know damn street public.
- 54:09Speaker 1: I'm not on the street big and people to give
- 54:11Speaker 1: me money. And then I still watched them one day
- 54:14Speaker 1: and they filled this little brown bag up with money.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I was like, oh lord, I got the least traded this,
- 54:19Speaker 1: you know, And it changed my entire life. That was nineteen,
- 54:23Speaker 1: that was five, and it changed my life because immediately
- 54:27Speaker 1: I became one of the best street performances in Chicago,
- 54:30Speaker 1: and I made so much money. Then you know, winter
- 54:32Speaker 1: came and when nobody trying to hit no jokes on
- 54:34Speaker 1: State Street in December, you know. So that's what encouraged
- 54:38Speaker 1: me to go to California, where I thought it was
- 54:40Speaker 1: warm all year round, and I found Venice Beach Man
- 54:43Speaker 1: and I mean those nine years then defined to me
- 54:48Speaker 1: as a human being. It actually defined let's let's describe
- 54:53Speaker 1: exactly for people to know what was going on here. Okay.
- 54:56Speaker 1: It wasn't like a small crowd, you know, and it
- 54:59Speaker 1: Venice Beach in Venus Beach. If you go there, if
- 55:01Speaker 1: you go to California, you gotta go to Venice Beach.
- 55:03Speaker 1: It's like a walking entertainment. And anything that you have
- 55:07Speaker 1: heard about Venus Beach, the Muscle Beach is still there. Okay.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Women walking around Scanton clad in bikinis they do that. Okay,
- 55:16Speaker 1: they roller skating down on in bikinis they do that. Okay,
- 55:22Speaker 1: thongs they do that, and women and so so so
- 55:30Speaker 1: imagine me. You know, this big, huge crowd I'm talking about,
- 55:35Speaker 1: I would have to say anywhere from three or four
- 55:37Speaker 1: hundred people just in a big crowd, and he had
- 55:40Speaker 1: this young man, young man in the middle of them,
- 55:43Speaker 1: just entertaining them. And I mean for that's said. What
- 55:47Speaker 1: you said was about anywhere about forty minutes, wasn't it, Michael?
- 55:50Speaker 1: That you were out there each show was an hour.
- 55:53Speaker 1: I would do forty minutes of comedy and then twenty
- 55:55Speaker 1: minutes to get my money. Absolutely, that's right. And then
- 55:58Speaker 1: he had a little the little you know, like he
- 56:00Speaker 1: was funny, the money grabbed what you're like, the little
- 56:02Speaker 1: you know when you walk around you pick up trash
- 56:04Speaker 1: off the off the ground. He had that, I remember, Michael,
- 56:08Speaker 1: and I would I would look at this, Wow, how
- 56:11Speaker 1: could he do that? Because I'm talking about this has
- 56:14Speaker 1: Venice Beach so beautiful sunshine, you know, and so people
- 56:19Speaker 1: have stopped what they were doing, and he held them.
- 56:23Speaker 1: I mean he said, come on, arong, come on, aroung ground,
- 56:25Speaker 1: and all of a sudden the crowd ground, and then
- 56:27Speaker 1: then more people will come, and then the end he
- 56:29Speaker 1: got his money and he went on. By this business, Michael,
- 56:32Speaker 1: how did you do it? Man? On the amount of
- 56:36Speaker 1: concentration you had to have to be able to perform
- 56:39Speaker 1: like that in any event where Sunny's Guys, Pretty Women,
- 56:43Speaker 1: muscle beach, food, live music, other competitors out there performing
- 56:48Speaker 1: on the streets. How did you pull it off. And
- 56:50Speaker 1: then here's the funny point. I would ask Micael, to Micael,
- 56:53Speaker 1: because you have to get your spot, and he had
- 56:55Speaker 1: he had the same spot all the time because you
- 56:58Speaker 1: so he said, no, no, Shine, I got I paid
- 57:00Speaker 1: somebody they come there and get my spot early. I
- 57:05Speaker 1: mostly came early on my own. You know, I wish
- 57:09Speaker 1: I could have done that one. I wish I could
- 57:11Speaker 1: have paid somebody. I was too stupid for that. I
- 57:13Speaker 1: would come early enough. And because it's a funny story
- 57:16Speaker 1: about that, and like just to give a quick quick
- 57:18Speaker 1: recap of it, I would go every Saturday and Sunday,
- 57:21Speaker 1: and I'd worked from noon until five pm, roughly five.
- 57:23Speaker 1: When I was shows, I'd be surrounded by anywhere from
- 57:26Speaker 1: three to seven d people. And I did it through
- 57:29Speaker 1: necessity because when I got to California, I thought I
- 57:31Speaker 1: was gonna hit clubs and make money and that wasnot
- 57:34Speaker 1: And then I went to Venice Beach and white folks
- 57:37Speaker 1: would come up and put money right in the basket
- 57:39Speaker 1: and I had to steal nothing. I had to cheat
- 57:42Speaker 1: to tell a couple of jokes. And so I started
- 57:44Speaker 1: out trying to go every single day. I tried to
- 57:46Speaker 1: do every day out there. But I discovered from working
- 57:49Speaker 1: it that the money was only there on the weekend,
- 57:52Speaker 1: and the money was really only there from noon until five,
- 57:55Speaker 1: because after five o'clock, Uh, all the white folks left
- 57:59Speaker 1: and took their money with him, and the brothers in
- 58:01Speaker 1: histantics would come out with bad attitudes, and so it
- 58:04Speaker 1: wasn't really no need to stay there after that. And
- 58:07Speaker 1: then didn't show up and feel new, go ahead. Now,
- 58:12Speaker 1: I was just I was just obviously enjoying because you're
- 58:14Speaker 1: taking me back down, relaying because of the fact that
- 58:17Speaker 1: everything he's said, like I said, I didn't, I didn't
- 58:19Speaker 1: if that seven hundred number was not a lie all
- 58:23Speaker 1: it was like people were peeping over over a people
- 58:26Speaker 1: sitting the top of each other's shoulders so they can
- 58:27Speaker 1: see the show. Because he was he was just surrounded
- 58:30Speaker 1: and he had enough space to be able to entertain himself.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And then sometimes now then sometimes you offer like wouldn't
- 58:37Speaker 1: he let other people perform? And sometimes to do your
- 58:40Speaker 1: set sometimes because you you didn't be not and then
- 58:42Speaker 1: another artist would come along, even the great Charlie Burnett,
- 58:45Speaker 1: who was a great street performer in New York. He
- 58:48Speaker 1: came out and did it once there's two kids to
- 58:51Speaker 1: your comic guys named Seymour, can't think the other guy's name.
- 58:55Speaker 1: And they went on and they're really famous in Vegas
- 58:57Speaker 1: now doing comedy. And people would come through, but you know,
- 59:00Speaker 1: a lot of people's working. Vince Beast then R Kelly
- 59:03Speaker 1: came out there for about six months before he made
- 59:05Speaker 1: his big hit. The boys became famous while they were
- 59:09Speaker 1: out there, and you know, so a lot of artists
- 59:11Speaker 1: came out and did their thing, and you know, but
- 59:14Speaker 1: the thing wasn't be able to stay, to be able
- 59:16Speaker 1: to stick with it and go year after year after year.
- 59:19Speaker 1: So the first year I was sort of figuring it out.
- 59:22Speaker 1: But at the end of the first year, I was
- 59:23Speaker 1: teaching other people how to do it, how to get
- 59:25Speaker 1: their money, you know, how to collect money as well
- 59:28Speaker 1: as to do the work of it. Didn't show business,
- 59:31Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying about. If you ain't getting
- 59:32Speaker 1: paid and you just out there, it's a craft, it's
- 59:35Speaker 1: not a job. But for me, it was a job.
- 59:38Speaker 1: So I had to also make the money, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 1: and I would get people to compete with each other
- 59:42Speaker 1: to pay me. So I would go group by group
- 59:45Speaker 1: and I say when I say up, up, you put
- 59:47Speaker 1: your money in the air and scream ye old, and
- 59:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna take this money. Grab on, then pull the
- 59:51Speaker 1: money out, and now if you get a fat will
- 59:54Speaker 1: be on. People gonna plause. If you could attend, we
- 59:56Speaker 1: don't cheer. If you give me a point, we're gonna
- 59:58Speaker 1: go crazy. So people pull out bigger and bigger bills
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: to get more recognition that when I go to the
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: second group, I say, I know you're not gonna take
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: this off of them. I know y'all will do better
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: than them. So they would try to beat each other.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: It will come times when sometimes crips and the blood
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: will come out and they would take different sides and
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: try to outspend each other. They try to see who
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: could put the most money in the basket. So it
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: became a phenomenal game. And every time I was the
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: weller because I went on with the bath. You know.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: And the thing is is this summer I'm going back
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: out hopefully in June to shoot it as the one
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: hour special. I'm building a stage for myself that looks
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: like a king's crown, stand in the middle of that crown,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: and I'm gonna do a one hour probably show called
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the King of Business Beach. So right now we're in
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the process of of seeking folks to help actually come
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: up with that funding. But it's gonna happen, June. I'm
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: shooting that. You know that that's going to be special.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Let's go back a little bit about your family, because
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: your family shaped you, Michael, and you talk about it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: in your book. Uh, Michael goes motivation. You talked about
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: your oldest brother who, out of frustration, he joined the
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: army went to Vietnam. He was only sixteen, told there
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: was seventeen. He went over there and became a sniper. Uh.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: You talked about the impact of Uh, you know, because
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: because it was five boys. You know, your your father
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: who was a trade man, you know, six three handsome guy,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: he was a tailor. You know. So now I understand.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I understand that. Now I understand you're looking at because
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Michael was another person, not that he always was shop
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I never understand why he was always sho. I understand
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that came from the family. My daddy was sharp, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: so my oldest brother, Dave Jr. The one who went
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: off to nob he too was so sharp and he
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: was really able to be sharp when he came back.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Being in the military, you know, he was able to
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: go and get these clothes made from all over the world.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: He'd go to Korea, and you know when you go
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: to Korea and get a nice super now dollars, and
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: he'd go over there and he'd come back. And I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: mean when when I was in high school and I
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: don't want to be an actor, and so when I
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: got out, I came right to California and I stayed
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: with my big brother for a little while, and he
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: had wall to wall clothing, I mean suits from one
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: end of the house to the other. He had shoes
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: from one end of the other, hat tennis racket and
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I've gotta do that when I
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: grow up. And to this day, I just loved dressing.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I can't wait for an excuse or reason to dress up,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: you know. And so yeah, so I get it from
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: my dad. It was a tailor and a presser. In fact,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: we grew up in the projects Chicago, Robert Taylor home
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: for a three big two South State parking band on
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: man and the Jewish people. But the old Jewish businessman
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: would seek my father out that fixed close for them
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: to create suits for them and to and to fix
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: the clothing that they had, you know, because my dad
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: knew about clothing and he was just a shop dresser
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: and a classy cat. You know, go ahead, glad O.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: The reason I enjoyed here because this is what's in
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the book. This is the that that the passion that
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: you hear Michaels VARs the storytelling and so you know,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: at the beginning of the book he talks about, you know,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: it's gonna be some typos, they're gonna be some corrections
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: of this, about don't worry about that, and then then
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: he repeats a red fox joke. That's what that cracked
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: me up. You go. I know I said it earlier,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: but it was so funny. I'm gonna say it again, right,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: I just I wanted to say it again. It was like,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: you know, when I'm going to read the book that
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: you're doing. You know, I'm talking to Michael Carl youre
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: the book I'm talking about it. Michael goes uh goes motivational.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: It's the third book, Michael, this book in the end
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: because you get really uh spiritual, you really go to
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: the motivation. And the reason I like it because of
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: the fact that I think, in other words, another for
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: somebody to tell you why you should listen to my motivation.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: You need to listen to my journey. And your book
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: is about a journey. Your book starts as a young
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: kid and talking about you know, your failures. You know, uh,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: you know, being rich several times over, a millionaire several
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: times over, and you know, and but it also shows
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: uh flaws, And I think that you want to listen
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: to the flaws or here the flaws too, because when
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I was talking about the beginning of my show, always
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: talking about there they're gonna be failures, and they're gonna
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: be mountains, They're gonna be valleys, and your book is
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: about those valleys, correct, and how you how you still
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: see the motem both of them, because the balance of
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the universe is that there are ups and down you know.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: I mean a lot of people think that the road
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: to success is linear, and rarely is it linear. There's
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: always the ups and the downs, you know. Like I
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: like to say, I've been riched three times, but I've
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: been broke fourteen from way more comfortable with brokes than
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: I am. Riched me and broke, like first cousins will
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: the first name basis I don't make hot water cormbrea
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: from scratch. I don't make corn meal much, you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and you probably know what you know what you if
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: national it's on the direction for corn meal. Muchis on
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: every box of corn meal. When you can't afford cereal,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you burial corn meal and water, you put in a
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: pinc of salt, milk and sugar and yum, yum yum.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I mean, my parents were so poor they couldn't even
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: afford the kids. The lady nick don't head us. That's
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I love it. I love it, and so we so
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: we we knew poverty. I come from public but when
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I got to visits, I learned money because people just
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: paying me, paying me, paying me, and I didn't have
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: a bunch of responsibilities. All I had with cash. So
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: you know, after I so much money and so many
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: people knew me, that's when my addiction kicked in because I,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: like I said, Robin Williams said, the best cocaine is
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: guy's way of saying you're making too much of damn money.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: And so I end up started slow like most people.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: A little weed, did a little blow. Then I found
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: that crack rocket and oh oh oh, you know, I
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: end up spending twenty three years and in a crack
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: of addiction. So as of two Sundays ago, as of
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: March first, I now have nine years of pure sobriety.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: But I guarantee you I lost more friends, more jobs,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: and more opportunities than I can't even name because of
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: my addiction. In fact, I am certain that you recognize
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: my addiction in a meeting I had with you, a
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: very important lunch meeting with you, and I had been
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: getting hot all the night before. But see, people who
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: are are drugs, they don't think nobody can tell they're
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: getting hot but them when they're getting ht. And I
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: showed up, I had cleaned up, I had freshened up,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: and I was sitting there talking to you, and I
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: know I was sweating like a Kelly in the playground
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: and it wasn't even that hot. And and I know
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you was wondering, why is this sweating like that? Or
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: maybe you wasn't wondering, maybe you knew that the symptoms
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: of that dance that I was doing that threw my
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: my whole game office track, you know, and something him
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: though you have to the only way you can get
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: around the thing, to go through it. You know what
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I'm saying, Well, that's what you've done, and you're you're
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: absolutely correct when you said that, Michael, is that you
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: know the journey. And that's why I tell people I'm
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: fortunate to see and be a part of his life
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: and know that when when when he talks about twenty
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: three years of hell and twenty three years of trying
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: to find himself in twenty three years of making mistakes
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and be an addiction, that's where the god. That's why
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: the book is important because he talks about his father's
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: addiction to alcohol. It's not something that that you know
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: that he wanted. Sometimes you know when we've learned that
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: through science that that is that is part of that
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: can be like a gene trade in you and it's
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: something you have to be. If you're aware of it,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: then you then you can you look forward. But when
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: you when you're growing, that lifestyle was there was so
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: normal to see your dad even though he was he
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: was a tailor, very skilled person, but he liked he
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: liked being like so when you hang out with people
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: who buy them drinks and the money didn't come home
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: because guess what everybody at the club or the night
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: at the bar. It had a better experience, and he
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: was gonna bring home financially. And so what you said
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: it that money didn't come home. You know that right now.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Money didn't come And that's why your book was just
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: so so appealing to me. And it was such relatable.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: Whenever when I talk about you're talking about your mom
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: was working at Spiegel Magazine. I'm when I was so
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Spiegel Magazine. I said, boy, I said if I could
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: hit him, if I could be next time. He didn't say,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: because because he here's it. Here's a thing that I
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: find relatable. When you start talking about Tasty Freeze, you know,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: going that getting baree. Let's go back to feel. But
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: do you remember the Spiegel catalog. Come on now, Michael, Michael.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: In the back page be all pictures of little puppies
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: that you could buy. Speak, Oh my god. I love
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: the Spiegel and the toy section out of this world.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: You know, I don't think I ever got any of it,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: but I'm love looking at them. Every I could wait
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: for the Christmas issue of the Spiegel magazine. Man and
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Tasty Freeze. What you know about Tasty Freeze? There were
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: two great magazines when we came up. It was serious
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: magazine and it was Speagel Magazine. Now the Speaker magazine
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: Liberty a little bit more fashionable, you know, little it
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: was a lot as thick as the series magazine Sears Roller,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: But that Speagel Magazine, I think that was bigger in
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: the in the in the black community to speak on
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: magazine was our magazine. It was our magazine. You know,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: that was our magazine. Man, and we look forward to that. Man.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: That was that was online shopping before it was online.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Thank you. You look at that magazine that people catalogs
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: have it, yes, to have stuff that was in there,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, it meant a lot to me. That
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: my mama's first job, you know, and and that and
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: that was the beginning of her liberation as well, you know,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: because she had to leave my dad. And she didn't
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: have to leave because she didn't love him. She loved
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: my father and he loved us. But my mother wanted
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: more for her boys. She didn't want us to spend
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: the rest of our lives in the project. She just
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: wanted more for us and was really really deep that
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I found out and writing this book with Shawn, I
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: gotta tell you, it's a it's a journey of self discovery.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: There was so much stuff about my own family that
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I didn't know until I started writing this book, and
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: question I didn't know. I mean, my mother ended up
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: marrying Walter Smith, who was my stepfather, but I didn't
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: know that he was her first high school sweetheart, that
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: he she he took her to her first prim he
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: did the block away from her. He was so deeply
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: in love with her that he asked her father for
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: her hand in marriage when she was sixteen, and he said, no, no,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: she's too young. And so he went away and joined
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: the navy. And while he was god, my mama ran
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: into my father, or he must have run into her
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: several times. But car she up and get pregnant, and
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: that was it for Walter Smith. Walter Smith was out
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: of her life. My mother went on to have four
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: more kids by my father. They had five kids. Twenty
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: five years later, when my mama was trying to get
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: our life together, she'd win to Spiegels. She'd have made
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: enough money to finally go to Sears driving school and
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: learn how to drive. She went and bought our first car,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: a Woodie, and she took that car to get in
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: service then Robin's Illinois. And you know when you get
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: your car service, h you're sending in the back. Afterwards,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: they send in the back, and they watched it when
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: she went back to get the car, watched and who
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: do you think is washing the car? Her high school
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: sweere Walter Smith. And all I could think of is
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: what went through my mama's head. And she watched Walter
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: rubbing and soping and sochoping and rubbing that car. I mean,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: they kicked it off like that. Twenty five years had
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: never passed, and next thing, you know, they were a
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: couple again. She went home and told my father all
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: best was, she was getting the divorce and marrying Walter Smith.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: And so she stayed with my dad for twenty five years,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: you know, and then she married high school sweetheart, who
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: she stayed with until his death, you know. And he
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: was a great stepfather. And we loved my father, you know,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: but we also understood what was going on. We watched
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: the situation. We watched the constom fighting and my mother crying.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: We watched my father come staggering in the house and
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: the mother didn't come home. We watched all of that,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: and we loved my dad, And I mean maybe six
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: months after they got divorced, my father up and died
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: yea fifty one. And I thought at first that it
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: was from the complications from the diabetes. You know what
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: y'all called the sugar, because he had diabetes and he
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: should have been drinking at all, but he drinking fit
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: the booze a day and spoke through that pack of
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: pale mail serious, and so I thought it hardly explode
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: in his chest. But when I think about it more,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I am certain that he died of a broken heart.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: He just loved my mother, man, and she loved him too,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: but she wanted more for her kids. Man, you know,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: and sometimes the thing is over. It is over, and
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: you've got to move on. Man. You know. That's the
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: beauty of this book is that it's a journey. It's
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: it's I'm just there because who's all air? He has
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: to write a book about that whole ten year run
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: on Venis Beach, because that's another book. That's another book.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: But this book, Yeah, the book he's delivering to us
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: called Michael Gets Motivation, ghost motivational. Excuse me, ghost motivational.

- 1:15:31Speaker 1: it and they know it's it's really a good story.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: That it's a journey. And like you said about life,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: life is a journey. It's not a quick it's not
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a trip so quick tripping. It's a journey. To Some
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: people say to me, man, that the universe has cursed me.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Some people say the universe is to bless me. It
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: doesn't do either one. The universe responds to your vibrations.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: So whatever you send me out is what the universe
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: sends back to you. So it's called Michael Golds Motivational

- 1:19:09Speaker 1: and Good Morning America. He's on the show to discuss

- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Flip on Quippy please work with the money making conversations.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Mikail Welch, Hey, thank you for having me. Well, it's
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: always great having you. Got your energy up, my man, Yes, hey,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I'm ready. It's premier day. Well, it's really because a
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: lot of people, you know, we know, we know the
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: times that we're in at this point that was wondering
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: is it was smart to be on TV at this time.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I think you have an audience at the house looking
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: for something new. Absolutely, I mean I agree, It's like
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: this is the perfect opportunity. Everybody is sheltering in place
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: and you know, looking for a new outlet. So right,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: this is the prime opportunity, you know, for I think
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: for television and just people putting our content, but what
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: every brand they're working on, this is the perfect opportun
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: unity just to kind of working and craft or work
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: that craft. The name of the show is Murder House,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: flip You know, I'm a big designer. I'll be watching.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: You know I'm watching. I watched the you know, the
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Cabin Masters. I watched The Man with the with the
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: amazing pools down in Florida. I love that dude and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: his with his mama. He called a woman on the show.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: So I'm a I'm a big guy, you know, I'm
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: I'm a big guy watching these flip these. I was
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: not saying I'm doing it on my own house now,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: you know. But I'm a watcher and I think America.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: America is really into watching and learning and and it
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: inspires people to go to stores like Home Depot and
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Lows and all these types of things to carry out
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: their dreams. What got you started? But cal Um, you
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: know what, honestly, I tell people all the time. You know,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: everything happens for a reason. But you know, I graduated
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: from Fool with more House with a degree in marketing,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: and you know, honestly, one day my mom had a
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: conversation with me and told me I needed to find
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: my passion and that I would know what it is
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: because it would be something I'd be willing to do
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: for free. So I ended up, you know, going to
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: work for a furniture company and that turned into you know,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: many other opportunities. But honestly it started from that one
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: little steed me working in the furniture store and just
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: going out on the women, just putting it all on
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: the line to say, hey, this is when I want
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: to go after And it all started from there. Now,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: furniture store, yes see, you're a long way from working
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: in the fure What were you doing in that furniture?
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Were you selling furniture? Furniture? What were you doing? I
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: was selling the furniture in the furniture store Storehouse Furniture
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: in Atlanta, And you know, I really got frustrated because
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: I wasn't a great salesman, so I thought, and so UM.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I ended up transitioning UH to the warehouse and I
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: was kind of like their um inventory manager, and I
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: was in charge of all the products that would go
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: like the Oprah when she was doing Hurricane to train
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: a relief and something it sparked in me and I said,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: you know what, I really want to be the person
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: on the other side that I don't want to just
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: ship out the furniture. I want to be the one
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: designing the room and so um after I mean, and
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: I'll tell the truth. After several failed attempts, you know,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: I had three different interviews to become a buyer and
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: it just didn't work out. My boss said to me,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: he said, y'all like you, but I think you might
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: want to, you know, test something else out. And there
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: was a gentleman on Craig was looking for an interior
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: design assistant, and I applied got that job and I
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: worked with him for a year, just really learning the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: business of design, how to run a firm. And from
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: there I went on Craigslist and I posted um to
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: design one free room for anyone who would allow me
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: into their home. I designed the room for free, as
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: long as they paid for the merchandise. And that's how
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: I built a book, a portfolio. Now, tell us about
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: those early designs, because you know you are there and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: they look at where they're looking at you as an amateur,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: when they're looking at you as a rookie, you know
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: when they question your abilities. What did you walk in
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: there to free? As free? Okay, we got free, but
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: then you still walking into somebody's house about to make
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: a change. How did you convince them at that next step? Well,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: you know what, I am one of those people who
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: believe in the safe until you make it. And so,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: you know what, I did use my house as kind
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: of like my first project. So I designed my house,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: had a friend take some pictures of it, so I
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: at least had some stock images. We must have siss
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: about fifty images all throughout my tiny apartment, but we
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: made it look like it was several different routs. So
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: I use that as my portfolio. And you know, you
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: have to work the angles that you have, right. I
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: love that, and so that's why, you know, people always
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: get they always going how do I get started? But
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: it's right there, it's how creative are you? Yes? Absolutely?
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: I mean really work in your network, you know. So
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: I tell people all the time, if you want to
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: break into design, you don't have any clients. Take pictures
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: of your house, take pictures of your friends houses. Like
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: you know, even in my current house right now, in
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: my New York apartment, I have a wall that is
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: solely dedicated to me rearranging things. So I can't always
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: have extra stock image for my Instagram always. Absolutely, you
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: know it's really interesting. It's just like me on baking,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: you know, people I just bake, and I just I
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: have different ways I bake, have different dishes I bake,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: and so I use those to just sell people that
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: I'm an award winning baker and I transition that because
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: in January this year, you will name House Beautiful's next
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Waved one of the next wave designers. What does that
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: mean for your branding, for your career at this point?
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: To get that on, you know, that was a life
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: changing experience. You know, just to be recognized, um as
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: as one of the House Beautiful sent swenty next Way,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: it was huge. You know, for one as an African
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: American designers, there aren't that many of us who even
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: make it to the larger Shelter magazine. So you know,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: this was big for me because I felt like it
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: was door open. This is going to open up the
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: doors for others just like me who are trying to
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: get in that door. But to think I came from
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Craigslist now to grazing how beautiful? Um I mean, it's
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: the most rewarding experience that, you know, what I think
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: a designer could ever have. So I'm just grateful for
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: the opportunity. It's hard work, but you know, I see
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: it's paying off. Paying off. Well, you know I met
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: you I felt early in your career, Michael on the
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Steve Harvey Talk Show. Okay, so as I do, prep
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: uh your for the interview, I'm going through. Michael also
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: has the honor of designing room for prominent personalities, including
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Faith Hell, Harry Cornell,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: j halle Berry, and of course Steve Harvey. Now, what
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: is all this happened? Did I miss all this? This
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: was happening before you met me? You know, if this
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: was all happening through you? I mean, this is another
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: thing I think. You know again when we talk about
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: making opportunities happen. So when we were on the Steve
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Harvey Show, every time Oprah came, Faith Will, Faith Hell,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: or halle Berry, First Lady Michelle Obumb every time they came,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I was giving a budget to design a special greening
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: room for each one of them. And I would take
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: those red and I would spend my own money, and
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: I would hire a photographer to photograph each room. And
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: then once I got an opportunity, I would come and
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I would ask that celebrity if they enjoyed the space,
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: and that little sentence that they told me I would
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: take that and I would use it as a quote.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: I would never forget Oprah, I asked her, and I
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: had to go ask her, I said, you know, because
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: that I couldn't get that close to her. So it
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: was time. I said, you know, did you like your room?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: And she was like, oh my gosh, what was that?
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: That's a quote? You put that on your website and
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: you know, so it's one of those you have to
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: work the angles that you had. That's how I made
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: that happen. Well, you know, it's it's one when you know.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: The thing I love about this interview is just you're
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: not um. First of all, you you trusting yourself and
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: trusting your instincts, and plus you are looking at opportunities
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: because you're you're You're is your feel is a visual
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: feeld walk in, you go, I don't think he knows
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: what he's doing. Oh I like the way that places
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: me in. And so you're taking advantage of those situations,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: those opportunities that come to you. And then when you
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: promote yourself, you promote you promoting yourself with credibility and
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: that's a beautiful thing. And so so where are you
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: now in your career as far as developing and building
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: your brand out. So right now, my biggest thing I
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: have to launch of partner with a company called Yosemite
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: Home Um out of Fresno, California, and I just launched
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: my first furniture line. So you can buy something. You
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: can buy something, you can sit there. Absolutely, you can
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: absolutely by on my website. You can check it out
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: on micas dot com. Say I'm mad at you, Michael,
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: because you're not seeing me any banners so I can
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: post on my soldier because you know, that's what money
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: making conversations all about, you know, you know, relationships, promoting
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: uh successful people in the business, showing other people that
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: they can be done. Now you've got a furniture line,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: and I've yet to ever post anything on my social
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: media recognizing this new development or this amazing development your life.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Shame on you. You're a busy man. I tried to
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: hope bart you. I tried to wait to you know.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: I have several things, line back them up and present
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: them to you. Sat all come with these little nuggets
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: with the finish the story, how many pieces and how
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: did they all come about? Oh so this is a
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: great story. Um so funny, funny story. Uh So last
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: year UM, I was there's a big furniture show that
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: they have UM in Las Vegas as well as High
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Point Market, and I'm doing a tour and I had
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: to take sixty people around to show them my space
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: favorite vendors inside of this merchandise smart and I took
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: my mother with me. So my mom's collecting all the
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: free bags that you get, you know, from the vendors.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: But the problem is every time she stops to get
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: a free bag, they want to talk to me to
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: sell something. And I said, okay, mom, I said, my mom,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: this is the last store we're going in. And so
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: we go in and I'm looking at a piece and
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: I'm just talking to my mom. I said, I like
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: that piece of artwork, but I don't like the medallion
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: they put on it. Because lady stops to me and
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: she says, what did you just say about that piece
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: of artwork? And I told her and I'm like, oh,
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: I put my foot in my mouth. And anyhow, the
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: lady said, well, tell me what else you think. So
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: we walk around the entire store. At the end of
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: the conversation, she says, I'm the vice president of the company.
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: We've been looking to partner with the designer who can
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: help us change our branding. And you were so honest
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: talking to your mother about what you didn't like about
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: that piece of furniture, and I think we want to
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: work with you. And that's honestly how it happens. Um So,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: so to mama hustling for freebees, Yes, landed you your
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: furniture line. That's what you try to tell us. That's
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: what you're saying on Money Made Conversation. Your mama's your
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: mama's agreed for the free stuff. Yeah, yes, yes, But
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: you know what also also, I would say this, it's
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: also the preparation because it was all of those things
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: that I had done in the past, my portfolio, the
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: television shows, all of the Harvey appearances. You're getting me
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: booked on the Real Housewives of Atlantic, So when they
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: go back to look at my work, it's like, oh,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: you know, this guy knows what he's talking about. So
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: he's being able to back that up and being prepared.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: That's the biggest thing. He just I was, well, you know,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: the thing I love about your Michael is that you
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: know you and not have a very honest relationship about
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: how gifted you are and how I will not allow
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: you to not give one. And then when I look
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: at your resume and I see you on HGTV Real
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Halfwives of Atlanta, Good Morning America, Steve Harvey talk show
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Designing of Famous People, and they're walking into the room
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: because you know the thing about famous people, man, they've
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: seen it all and for the bend pressed by walking
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: into a room, a green room. And I walked to
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: some green rooms myself and I went, what is this?
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: And I walked into green and go wow, Like Rachel Age,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: green room was like off the chain in New York.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: We're on the show to talk about this new show
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: that I saw a trailer on and you made me laugh.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: And but more, let me just tell you somebody the
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: name of the shows called Murder House Flip and it's
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: on the Quick Network. Now this why this is a
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: perfect show for me is because I can't get enough
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: of forensic files. Okay, let just tell you. I watched
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: those shows, man, like I watched the repeats and now
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: they've got new shows, so I'm happy. I watched Sex
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: and Murder, I watched all those shows. Man. I was
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: just addicted to those type of shows. And so when
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: I when they sent me the trailer of your show,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: I didn't know what they were sending it. So when
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: they shot me a trailer about your show, by what
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: people are buying houses are renovating house where people either
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: were murdered in or dying in, I went, Wow, I've
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: been sitting on this idea for years. Yeah, this was
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: the craziest thing I think I have not even think
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: he hands down to the craziest thing I've ever worked on.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, when my manager called me
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: to say, hey, you know you have an audition for
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Murder House Clips, I'm like, what is that? I thought
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: they were joking and I really didn't believe them until
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: they booked. But like even the EP of the show,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: he called me, he's trying to convince me that it's
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: a real show. And until they booked my plane fair,
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: I didn't really think this was real. But it's a
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: legitis show. Um it's myself and a co host, um
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: my coach with Joel If the two of us, we
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: go into homes where people have you know, have the
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: iconic murders? Have that absolutely murders? Yes? Mean the first
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: episode of this Lady you know. So it was an
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: elderly woman who killed seven people by you know, poisoning
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: them so that she could take their social Security check.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: So she buried them in her front yard. So it's
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: it's creepy. Now you want to go out there embarrassing,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: put some grass down and put some plants down and
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: have the children play over the dead bodies and all
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: that good stuff. That That's why I love the show.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: That's why I'm kind of mad and half at the
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: same time. Because I'm mad because I watched all these
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: homemakeover shows I love them. I watched all these touristic
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: murder shows, which I love them, and not one time
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: did my dumb behind to go this is a show
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: because you know why the idea is so crazy and
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: so extremes. It is crazy. It is crazy, even like
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: you saw in the clip. You know, it's the clip
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: where I'm on the staircase with my co host and
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: I tell her, you know, I usually do say ladies first,
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: but I ran down those stairs because it was a
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: or g and I just wanted to get out of
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: that house, like we filmed at night. Yeah, I'm laughing
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: because you look so wimping when you said that because
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: you were really going down those steps fast. You were
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: going and she's a taller person and she's taller than
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: you too, so you you're running out those steps real fast.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: And let's let's let's talk about because you talk about
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: being interviewed. And here's the funny part about it, because
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: you gotta give or for anything that you do, whether
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: you believe in it or not. So when you got
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: when you got the opportunity to go down an interview,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: who did you interview with and what did your interview
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: consist of? We're talking to Micale Welch. His new show, uh,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Murder House Flip. It's on the Quimpy Network and uh,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: it's a short form show, correct work. How long is it?
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Each episode is less than six minutes, So six minute
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: episodes that are on your telephone, really quick and easy. Okay, cool? Now,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: how did you audition for this? Um? So, I flew
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: into l A I met at the Sony lot. The
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: show is produced by the parent company Sony, and we
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: kind of had what they call chemistry tests and for
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: those who don't know, that's when they put a couple
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: of different hosts together and so, um, it's uh it's
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: kind of like a group interview, and so your personality
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: just has to shine. And so me and my current
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: co host Joel, we just kind of hit it off. Basically,
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: what they do is they put an image of a
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: house up on the wall and we have to look
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: at a room and we have to kind of tell
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: them together collectively what we would plan to do or
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: how we re envisioned this house and so that Uh
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: so you you were with a stranger, yes, and you
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: have that moment absolutely, you know, in that moment you
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: have to act like, you know, hey, Joel, you know
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: we typically do X, Y and Z, but today we're
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: gonna do this. But we you have to go into
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: you know, that moment, act like do this all the time,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: and you roll with it. Okay. So what is her background? Um?
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: You know, honestly a Joe is a high end um
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: residential designer in Beverly Hill. So this is her first
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: time doing television, so she's never done it before. So
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: this was huge for her too. And so and so
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: both of you guys go in and we talked about
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: the show. Now, how many episodes did you guys take? There?
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: Six minutes long on the quipit at work, murder house flip.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: How many did you take now in six minutes? A hundred?
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: How many? But the way it works is we each
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: house and six minutes excuse me. Each house has three episodes.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: So you kind of have like the true crime in
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: the beginning, kind of the meeting potatoes, of the game
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: plan of how we're gonna design the space, and then
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: the third episode is the reveal. And so each house
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: has three episodes, and I think that's great for the
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: people who like true crime. You have a whole episode
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: that's dedicated to, you know, the the background story of
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: what happened in the house. So you feed me alone
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: the way you feed me with my my addiction to
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: true crime, you know exactly. And you feed my addiction
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: to make over how you gonna make it over? And
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: then you feed my addiction to the results now now
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: and and do you talk about obviously these crimes where
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: they were, Are these crimes resolved? Are they still like
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: looking for the killers or what's going on with these crimes? Well,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: most of them have been resolved. You know, we have
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: a combination. The interesting thing about this show is, you know,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: honestly a lot of people move into these houses because
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: the first thing you guys like, why would you take
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: the house? Well, if you have a house that's on
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: the market, you know, for let's say six hundred thousand dollars,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: but then you come to the house next door and
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: that's don step for three hundred thousand dollars. You might
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: just take it because of the price. But um so
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: some people willingly know, but there's a significant difference in
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: the price, and they're okay with it at first. And
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: then you also have some who purchased these homes and
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: like the mid nineties who did not know because we
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: didn't have Google. So unless you're looking on a micro fee,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: you would not know that a partyer happened until your
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: next door neighbor comes to tell you have to you
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: purchased the house. And so that's where you're running to
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: the problems. They're not gonna do with a preacher, you know,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: not knock knock now. Uh. People died and there was
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: a identity of drinking some liquids. And those are the
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: cases where your baby room, your baby room upstairs, it
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: was a murder, mass murder in your baby room upstairs.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: They didn't tell you about that exactly in your oven,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: you know when you put your dinner plates four heads
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: up there, they put them in a row, four heads
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: in a road where you got your dinner plates. Right,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: there's about just take you on the twil of disaster
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: or your home after you purchased it. I mean, it's scared.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: I mean, I'll be honest with you. You know. Um,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: I joke and laugh about it, but some horrific crimes
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: really happen, and you'll see them, you know, in the
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: next couple of Let me tell you some Let me
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: tell you something. I have to be able to joke.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: If you made a decision to go into a house
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: where you know murders have occurred, you can become But
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: my joke, I'm sorry, and you cannot sit up there
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: acting like you are fearful now when the price tag
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: was not fearful. That's all I'm saying. My old thing
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: is my old thing is that. That's why I love
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: the show. That's why these people, you know, they always
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: show these people doing the real looking at the shot. Uh,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: I can't believe that they really happened. You knew that,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: Like you said, house next door six hundred thousand, your
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: house a hundred and fifty thousand, look exactly the same
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: as the house next door. You're going, what's the problem
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: in the front yard where the roses? Like, uh, eight
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: people were buried there? Are you you still want to
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: move in? Yeah? Yeah, we definitely had that. I mean
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: one case where a gentleman chopped up his wife and
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: like he was boiling her body part on the on
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: the stove and that the neighbor smelt that and called
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: the police. And so it's and people complain about Chidling's,
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: people complain about the smell of chick really now that
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: But you know the thing about it is that that's
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: why I like the show. I like the show because
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: of the fact that it's different. You're combined to genres
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: in an unusual manner. Now let's talk about this. Now
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: you're flipping this house. What does that mean? The murder
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: house flip? What does that mean? So it's not sure
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: it's so first let me give this disclaimer. So the
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: people aren't selling the houses. That's the word flip, is
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: us flipping it into something that's tops and if it's
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: really what the connotation is. And um, we come in
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: and we strictly work on the room that's been affected. Um,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: but the thing about that is when we redesign it,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: we have to make it look completely different. So this
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: is not just oh, put acute self in the room.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: So we're like tearing down walls or ripping our fireplaces.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: So every time you see so when the when the
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: homeowners come back into that space, it needs to feel
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: completely different because we're trying to help them forget what happened.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: Like we're pulling up linoleum tile and we're like poor
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: a solution that we can see the blood things that
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: has speaken the room because a lot of so we
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: had to really go in and change these houses um
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: so that when they go into these room they looked
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: drastically different. So seriously, you actually saw blood stains of
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: thesolutely absolutely in the trailer, there's we're in the bathroom
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: and we um the family didn't remove the actual tub
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: where the husband you know, I guess would have watched
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: the residue or whatever the blood. But but when we
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: want to pull the linoleum back, there's a special solution
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: that they use in crime scenes and you'll see it.
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: We pour it right onto the floor and the bubbles
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: and you can see it. It's gusting, right, and so
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: that you had to like redesign. Oh. Absolutely, we had
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: to gut it completely. I mean it was it was
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: more than just the two of us. I mean we
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: had as a team that would you know, come in
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: and help us clean. Um, but we had to gut
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: the rooms and completely redesign them. So you're even gonna
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: see me with power tool. So okay, let me because
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: this is really interesting. So you said, the three is
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: a three six minute segments for each episode or each
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: house for Flip. Just the first part is going to
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: be what happened there? Okay. The second part is you
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: guys are going in meeting the family that lives there. Correct, Okay,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: did any of these family families have children? Yes? And
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: so I think the most interesting is going to be
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: our finale episode. Um. Not to go into grave detail,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: but the young lady who lived in the house, she
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: was a child when they first moved into the house,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: and now as an adult, she's still affected by it
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: and doesn't like to even really go back to her
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: parents house as before. And so that yees, So they're
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: children there, they're definitely children involved. That's that's really I
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: think that's all I have to put on a child,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: you know, that's I don't I don't think that's fair
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: that the parents need there behind they actually need to
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: really understand that that's a that's an emotional burden. Not
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: only for that, but I'm sure she was teethed or
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: bullied when she went to school about that, because you know,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: kids don't care, they get they get up on you,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: they're gonna use it. And to have a child to
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: live in that environment is really, like you said, as
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: an adult, she's affected by that. Correct, Yeah, actually as
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: an adult. And you know in that scenario, they didn't know.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: They didn't know in the nineties, like they didn't know.
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: But like you said, the neighbors came, they to do
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: it with the cookies and say hey, you got the
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: Johnson house and they're like, what is the Johnson house?
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: So they didn't know, right, that's saying that. The executive
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: producer this show is from c s I. He's the
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: executive producer, John Berman. So he has a little he
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: has a little something to know. And your co host
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: is who um Joel Useel Joel Zel, I'm telling you
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: something this show is I'm talking to Michal Well. It's
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: good friend of mine, one of the top young designers.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: He never failed me. And uh, all the years I
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: was executive producing the Steve Harvey talk Show and he's
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: went on them to do even greater things. My man,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: Murder House Flip premieres on the Equipping Network three six
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: minute episodes per chef for a house, and you're not
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: exactly selling the house. You're just flipping the house from
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: a murder crime look to a crime to a much
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: more modern and appealing and in trying to try to
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: get their family emotionally more engaged into the house and
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: not the history of the house. Correct, Yes, that is correct.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: It's all about flipping that design, making it positive and
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: allowing the family to like take ownership of the house
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: back without that negative connotation. Oh my man, I appreciate
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: you again. You owe me some banners so I can

- 1:47:12Speaker 1: you the good morning? Good and you're calling in from
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: where California? That's city is uh? Kobe situation happened out there?
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: And now we have the coronavirus thing that has life
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: been Los Angeles a person living in the Los angelesvirus already,
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: traffic issues is always environmental issues. How is life in
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: Los Angeles for you right now? Well, it's looking a
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: little uh looking, a little challenging, but we're making it.
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: It's just a little grocery store issues. For everybody's safe
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: and we're trying to stay in and and take care
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: of ourselves. Everybody has to take care of theirselves right now.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: Do what's wise. Absolutely. I know I um, I live
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: in the land. I live in Houston, so part of
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: my family's live in Houston. So you know, I'm not
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: going to do an air travel. Might drive to Houston
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: just have fun and just see the country spin. But
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: it's always about the creative process and your creative person.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: What is legiment is this question what are your gifts
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: or what is your gift? My gift is creativity. My
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: gift is being able to come up with an idea
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: through various elements that I may have to use, color
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: to a person's size, too, what the what, what the
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: design may be for whether they're singing or going out
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: to a special occasion or just wearing their regular attire.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: But put all the elements together that are important to
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: that factor and create something amazing. Um My Gifts has
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: been doing that for thirty years with the music and
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: entertainment business, and now I've had an opportunity to do
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: that with um By Shapewear and my fashion. Well, that's interesting.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: Like I always talk to people about when do you
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: realize that's the direction you want to go on? Under
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: understand that, you know, we all as we go through life,
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: we drain. We see things on TV they inspire us
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: and we don't. In college, some people don't go to college.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: Nothing negative, but not going to college. But as long
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: as you're focused on your dreams and you pursue it consistently,
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: when did you started sending that that the balance right
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: started moving in the right direction in your career, within
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: your your teens or earlier than that, when you started
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: to be inspired said this is what I want to do. Well. Actually,
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: I was seven years old when I made um Care
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: of Shorts the Scars. I visited my auntie up north
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: in San Francisco area. My mom, of course, didn't want
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: me to stay on something getting like young, and I
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: asked her and she had an old antique song machine.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: She said sure, and when in the trunk and gave
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: me some fabric and I cut a pair of short
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: at a band Danna and sat on that star machine
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: and sewed. Because my mom had been slowing for many years.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: I used to watch her make evening gowns for her
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: social and charity club. So from that point I just
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: continued sowing on and by the time I got to
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: junior high school, I was making more difficult patterns usually,
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: so so you were saying that early on when your
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: seven was kind of like imitating your mom or just yes, yes, well,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: just taking on something that I saw. I saw I
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: watched hergers, but she used the design used to do gowns,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: UH make gowns for her social and charity clubs, and
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: it made people happy, to make people smiles when they
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: when they sell you. So that was kind of like
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: that just seeing something to your mom, and your mom
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: was excited about she enjoyed doing it, and then you
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: saw the results. Yes, and then I started taking on
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: the craft as well. And where I got into it
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: the more just just was like amazing to me to
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: be able to create various things that I loved and
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: I use patterns, and so I got got more and
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: more complicated in terms of the patterns I was using.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: I start using Vogue Vogue patterns um out of the
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: Vogue book, and that really takes you to a more
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: different level of patterns that you can make things. So
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: that was really exciting for me. By the time I
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: got up to high school, I was to complicate the
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: Vogue patterns. Now, when you say that those are layered, right,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: layered patterns, they kind of like it's not like a
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: straight just a cut. Correct when you say Vogue patterns, well,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: patterns meaning that you can have a style that you
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: go through a style book because of style, and then
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: actually buy the patterns to make that style. Let your
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: fabric what you wanted to look like, but you actually
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: cut it according to that pattern and duplicates what you
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: see on the picture. So it's actually the patterns that
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: are the pieces that you cut to create the carpity.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: So now you're out there. You know you you're in
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: high school. Now how are you dressing? Angela? So when
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: you came to I had a friend of mine, I remember,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: I remember his name, Jock Howard. Jock Howard for some
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: reason dressed differently from us. I mean, he was above
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: the curve. I think to this day he would come
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: into school. I go, wow, what was he meaning through
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: his mind that made him dress like that? Because we
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: were just we were just dressing normal. But he always
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: had to tie on, he had suspenders on, his shoes
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: were always clean. But he walked differently than us. Jock
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: Howard walked differently than than us. And I was even
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: when he went to college. It was just an upgrade
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: when he went to college, you know, because he was
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: like he was. But when I was seeing him walk
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: across campus, I was always looking him, go Jock Howard,
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: and my god, he was just as a smooth So
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: you was kind of like that person that was like
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: it was a good thing. But then people couldn't understand
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: how did you How did you get it so early?
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: How did you figured out? Because now you know, I'm
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: taking some Now me and Jock Howard, we'll be rocking
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: the same. Look round I got, I got me and Jock.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: I got jocked Angel I got. I've been having him
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: by thirty years seventeen years old. I didn't know what
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: he was doing. I understand it's a passion something you
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: pick up early and you take on and you do
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: what to do. And yes, I was him. Oh my god,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: that's a beautiful thing because of the fact that you
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: know it was. Here's the beauty of what I'm saying about.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: When I talk about Jock Howard, I'm talking to Angela.
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: Dean is that I was not offended by him. I
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: was just I was just curious that in my mind
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: being so young, you know, we were playing basketball, Angela.
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: You you know, We're just trying to just learn about life.
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: I'm cutting out cars and magazines and trying to figure
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: out driving the neighborhood, looking at houses with that house,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: I want that house. You know, car dride By, That's
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: a car I want. That's a car I want. But
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Jock would go in this closet, put on the suspenders,
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: skinny tie, you know, his shirt was tocked in his belt,
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: everything fit right, and he walked down the hallway and
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: I go, wow, wow he had and so you had
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: that stuff. So you watch your mom, Angela, and so
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: your mom see how I love the fact that you
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: said you saw in the beginning, the middle and the end,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: and that's that's that's a really a special moment for
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: you to see, because you know, I would see my
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: father go to work, he'd come back to that. I
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: never saw the middle. All I know he was just
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: working all day. I know he had to go to work.
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: He knew he had to go to work. He'd come
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: back sometime he was happy, sometimes he was said. So
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: I never saw the results of what got him to
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: that level. And so to watch your mom start something creatively,
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: just take some material and they start, and then you
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: see people come pick it up and go and do
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: you see the reaction to you and your mom get
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: paid for that activity? That had to be really unique
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: for you as a growing young lady. It definitely was.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: It definitely was. She inspired me. She is the inspiration
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: of my whole existence as a spinner. She was such
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: an elegant and beautiful woman and tall, and the way
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: she wore clothes was so beautifully. So when she made something,
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: you know, like I said, it was themed events, so
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: there would be a red ball for everyone. All the
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: women were red, black and white. Everybody would wear black
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: and white. So she would make her her fashion special.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: Her dresses were special. And so she sat there and
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: was so then with the elderly lady from across the
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: street and they would saw on the saw machine and
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: sow the balls pattern. So I was inspired by her
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: for having the style and grace. Um, my mom reminded
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: you of Elena Horn or Nancy Wilson. You had to
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: think of who she looks like. Just class, just class,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: just class. Yeah, so I kept that class in my
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: design for forever. You know. That's kind of what I
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: worked from, where when you buy something for me, it's
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: last for years and you can wear it for years
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: due to the classickness of the style. That's what I love.
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: That's what I love about you because the fact that
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: you she she's she's saying a keyword. And the people
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: always say, I always tell you pay for excellence, and
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: you are still pay for longevity. And a lot of
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: people can playing when you go, well, you know, Taylor suits,
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: Taylor Church. That's kind of expensive, not really considering that,
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: you know, you're probably gonna even type of shoes that
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: you wear. You might go through a lot of shoes
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: or shoes might be hurting your feet. Because I'm a
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: testament to the fact that if I would have been
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: wearing the shoes that I wore, I wear that versus
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: college because I ordered I will. You know, I ain't
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: gonna bad mof no names, but it was some names
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: I shouldn't have had on my feet. And I'm paying
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: a price for it right now. Everybody, you understand what
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: I'm saying, Angela, you know what I'm saying right there.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: And so people come up with you as you pay
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: for what you get. My toes are like if they
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: could talk, they go do what I told you. I
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: told you about that. And so when I look at
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: your fashion, your history, and I wanted to let people
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: understand your journey, Angela, how you becolled because a lot
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: of people think that we always see in Hollywood, we
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: see the end results, we always see the magic, but
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: they don't really hear the journey. And I wanted I
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: wanted to just share some moments of your journey before
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: we really get into the fact of your greatness. Your
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: greatness is people walking in the room, famous people or
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: famous executives, are noteworthy people in life, going I want
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: you to make that for me, and I'm gonna trust
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: that you're gonna make it because I'm gonna I'm going
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: to put it on the one of the largest stages
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: in the world. They made that first moment for us
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: when you when they dawned on you, they wow. Well,
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: after I came out of high school, I then um
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: when it's to college and went to school for fashion design.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: Came out about three or four years later and went
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: into the fashion industry downtown Los Angeles. But um, I
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: wasn't really inspired by what I was doing because I
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: was they had the copy and T shirts and um
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: doing things that I felt weren't in the integrity of creating,
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: creating and being the designers more so, like copying things.
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: I didn't think that's what I signed up for. So
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: I looked for the first uh, first placed the way
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: to get to Hollywood, Like, how do I get to
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: Hollywood to do something creative? And you know, the movies
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: and TV and music gave me that freedom. So I
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: actually got to store out milrows in two for about
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: three years, and uh, I had my own story. Was
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: a challenge because they end up robbing me in. I
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: had to leave because I couldn't afford to stay after
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: they had taken everything. Um, but it was really your
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: challenge because the first black designer, I believe on mel Roads,
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: world famous mel Roads. It was for years, I know
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: about the world famous Mayor Roads. Okay, yeah, so you
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: know it was a little a little wild out there,
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely. I know. I moved so I know us
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: a little out of my curve. So you was doing
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: some stuff way beyond. Yeah, it was, it was. It
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: was really an amazing journey. But at the same time,
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: you know, I learned a lot, and so sometimes you
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: have to say all the things about who you are,
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: and the fact that on the store and that type
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: of thing wasn't the best thing to talk about. Learn
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: how to get a little quiet and not say so much.
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: So in many years I really didn't give the information
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: that was black. I had a name, it was a
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: Dean tign which was my company name, and wrote off
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: of that and did a lot of celebrities and as
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: people from that point on, after I closed my store
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: UM and kind of went to more customs of creating
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: for the music and entertainment business, for celebrities, doing this
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: album covers UM magazine, covers stage performances, UM, you know,
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: red carpets, those types of things with my specialty. So
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: I created my own lane as a celebrity designer. Most
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: people weren't using that term. Now everyone is this is something,
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: this is something branding and all those things. I'm talking
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: to Angela Dean Um. She's an amazing person. From Madonna
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: to Katie Perry, to Oprah Winfrey to Halleyberry. Her creations
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: have a don magazine covers concert stages and Oscar and
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: Grammy Red Carpets. She's also the creator when We come Back,
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: Shaped by an Angel Bodywear, revolutionary shapewear line that transformed
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: women's bodies. I could probably use something transform my body,
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: Angel And so you know, you might want to get
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: hip out brother name Roshan McDonald. But we're right back
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: with more money making conversations speaking to Angela Dean. Hi,
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: this Rashan McDonald's doing money making conversation. This is my thing,
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: you know. And I sat down with some friends of
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: mine and some producers who believed in me, and said, hey,
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: I want to do a show about entrepreneurship or show
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: about entertainment, to see if I can mixture two talk
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: about branding and marketing and see if I can make
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: it interesting enough that people will want to listen to
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: it and more important to get information from the show
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: that could make their lives transformative. And that's what I'm doing,
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: and that's what I do. Every week I bring a
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: guest on my show, and the guests I have on
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: my show to day is very unique talent. Angela Dean,
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: You know when you when you're talking about things that
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: you said, what had she done? Did she acually done
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: anything in my lifetime? And I remember, Uh, she's worked
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: with people like Madonna that bullet burst, yea, but who
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: can't forget that that was an amazing thing. Uh. She
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: worked with Essence Magazine did the iconic thirty year anniversary
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: edition which had at queenly he For on the cover,
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: halle Berry on the cover, Jada Pinket Smith on the cover,
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: Fox on the cover, Loretta, Divine, Regina King, at least Neil,
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: and Michael Michelle. Now you did the fashion for all
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: of them, Angela, Yes, I did. I was commissioned to
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: do all those ladies. Okay, let me let me the
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: radle off those names again, because he's each one has
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: a distinct personality. Queen La, halle Berry, Jada Pinkett Smith,
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: Viverca A, Fox, Loretta, Divine, Regina King, at least Neil,
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: and Michael Michelle Essence Covert Anniversary. Yeah, wow, Yeah, congratulations,
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. I gotta say that because you know,
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: I know what the talent was then, and then you
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: watch the growth of that talent is even you're looking
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: back more, you go, how great that car? For years?
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: Now you know what I'm saying. You go okay, you said, oh,
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: I'm just gonna do this cover, and then you go
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: okay to cover. Now, when that was it was great,
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: But now you know that's that's a that's an original
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: color you cover. You know you get money for it.
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: Right now, I met you want to buy that for
- 2:03:19Speaker 1: that's a color? You feel me, you go and then
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: you start and you know, I always always look back
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: at my life, Angela. I always think, you know, I
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: made a lot of famous people. I've sat down with
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: a lot of famous people, and I and and I
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: just sometimes I just did a job and then I
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: look back in my life and go, I wish how
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: to spend a little bit more time with that person?
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: Are I wish how to delving into more conversation with it?
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: Does that ever? Do you ever think like that when
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: you think about your life and the work you've done,
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: sitting down with openings openers of the world and all
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: these iconic people, the Madonnas of the world and hallet
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: Barriers of the world, are Queen Latifas of the world.
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: Is it like any question, know, any conversation you wish
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: you would have had with these people along the way?
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: Or just like wish I was just doing a job. No,
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: I really took enough. I took advantage of those opportunities.
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: I knew that they were special moments in time, and
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: I really embraced them. I have so many amazing UM
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: relationships with my celebrity clients that a lot of special
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: highs and low moments. You know, there's entertainment businesses can
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: be very challenging. So I've had great, um, great relationships
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: with my celebrity clients. Um, the late Nancy Wilson was
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: like a mom to me, and we would sit lay
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: out in the bed after her shows that the built
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: more hotel, red eyed and cool, and just lay and
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: talked about different things of life. They let me really
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: have a personal place. If you ever have a chance
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: to get into that space with them, they have a
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: lot to share and I had a lot to share
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: as well. For those intimate moments. I'll never forget what
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: many of them. So I did try to take some
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: moments if I could, because I had a lot of
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: private moments with them. Right. It's really important because I
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: think that the reasons I bring that up because a
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: lot of times we just especially in today's society, with
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: like you know, basically your phone's attached to your text.
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: A lot of people will just text or they can
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: just pick up a phone and tex Yeah, I do
- 2:05:28Speaker 1: that a lot. Angela. People text me and I just
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: I just picked a phone call and say hey, you
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: call me. That's what we we we understand that as
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: mature people, it's just not good. You never say you
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: what's what's up? What's what's happened? That's right? Connect and
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: it really needs to do and it really helps you
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: because of that technology, because you know, you you come
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: through a lane of like you know, I can use
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: the word old cool were communication was a lot of
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: time people told you that they come in and sit
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: down and talk to you, had these nice conversations and
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: allow you to work through the process. Now you have technology.
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: First it was facts and now and then it was email.
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: Now they just take a photo of something that's sent
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: it to you. So so interesting. So so how does
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: that affect How has that affected you creatively over the years?
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: You know, interestingly enough, the technology has helped me tremendously
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: because I can go with my phone now and shop
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: with my clients in real time. You know, UM actually
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: showed them the Fabrican real time to make a choice
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: in real time. My sketches arem able to do and
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: send to them, you know, in real time. So it
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: really has assisted me, I think, in the process of
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: getting clear and understanding what's available and understanding what the
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: process is going to be going forward with the order.
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: So I think technology has been a tremendous asset in
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: the area of communicating and design for sure with me
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: and my clients. And I think that that's what we're
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: moving more into now today. I think that's what this
- 2:07:10Speaker 1: is about, bringing us more online, more online. It can
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: be a bad thing, but when we can take advantage
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: of the things that we have access to today with technology,
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: it is to our advantage, especially in the process of creating.
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: We were speaking about technology. Just move on to your
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: revolutionary shape by the Angel body Wear. I got it
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: up in front of me, so I got photos. I
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: got all kind of pictures in front of me. So
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: walk me through the steps of saying okay with Sean.
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: You know, I've designed all these clothes for different celebrities
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: and everyday people. How did you get into the body
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: whear industry. Well, I've always been known for different various
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: body types of being able to create amazing things no
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: matter what size or how ice or shape you are.
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: That's been my forte and so um the shape or
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: market had has been something that I've you know, dove
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: into because I was worked for a laundry company some
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: years ago after closing my store where I designed the
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: bullet braw courset for Madonna, and I started using a
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: lot of the my course, it's underneath the gowns and things.
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: So it became something that I was a go to
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: for that building. It underneath the gowns for ost gowns
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: and things like that, and those in the closed got
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: the more we had these different fabrics and go in
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: the stretching, and so I just continued to work and
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: develop it. It really felt that it was important that
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: I created a shape line that was for all body types.
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: All of all bodies are not the same, all women
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: are not the same shape, and so the shapers are
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: designed according to the five most common bite types which
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: accentuate the airs of those body types and enhanced and
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: you know, take away and realign the shapes um with
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: the panels. So it's something that I'm very proud of
- 2:09:10Speaker 1: and it's very unique and different and it's amazing. It
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: transforms bodies every day. One of my let me ask
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: you this about there, let me just about your body
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: where because I watched TV. I have six sisters, so
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: you know they were four of them are older than
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: me and so so I'm always you know, I've seen
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: what when you say transformative or revolutionary, what what is
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: your clothes doing to a woman's body, Because you say
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: bodies of all styles, of all shapes, Well, what were
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: they pushing the tightening the weightline or pushing the the shaper. Yeah,
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: the shaper has panels in it in the inside of
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: it that's reshaping and doing different very things to areas
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: of the body that need assistance. So, for instance, your weight,
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: you want to waste to be smaller, there's a pan
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: to accentuate the waste. There's an area that is a
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: panel for the abdomen, so a lot of women foot
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: you out a little bit and has a tendency to
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: pull you in. It has a panel underneath your buttock area,
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: lift your butt um. There's a panel across the back
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: of your waist that accentuates you waste more so it's
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: giving the body more accentuating areas through the panels. They're
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: assisting in reshaping the body. Then the fabric is amazing
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: too because it's supposed surgical compression fabric that has empty
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: microbial fibers to keep you cooling fresh um compression and real,
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: real scientific owners right there. You know you need to
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: stop to break it down. Fact that a breeze and
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: there's a you know, compression. I've heard that we're compression comfortable.
- 2:10:54Speaker 1: So so so a young lady comes in because you
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: know you're you're your line is for all age groups, correct, Okay? Okay,
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: so the accommodate gover women. Okay, cool, So we can
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: go online and buy your your body with correct tell
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: us how we can do that first, before I asked
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: my next series of questions. Um, the brand is shaped
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: by an angel s h A p E D by
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: B y m A n angel a n g e
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: L dot com and you can follow us on all
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: um social media platforms at shaped by an angel as well. Okay, cool.
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: So I'm a person, you know, you know, I'm trying
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: to get my waist. I'm trying to just make a waste,
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: you know, I just want to show it off, you
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: know a little bit, and just trying to get my
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: just trying to go out there and you know, just
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: trying to look good. So how would I how would
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: I be introduced to your website as a as a
- 2:11:56Speaker 1: as a as a woman, you know, trying to get
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: what what? Why? Why would I go to your website?
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: I guess I should ask that question at you. Well,
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: you go into my website for what for? I think
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: that you're probably looking for something UM in the area
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: of shape where that could assist you with UM making
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: your body field user or UM shrinking your body maybe
- 2:12:20Speaker 1: a couple of sizes through the shape where. But women
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: are just really UM embraced shape where because it reshapes
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: them and makes them feel comfortable and smoothed out the body.
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: So it's usually a desire to your look for. Women
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: are constantly looking for shapewear or better shapewear UM various brands,
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: so it's something that women have been wearing since the
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: many decades UM. So mine is very modernized and revolutionized
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: by the fabric, so there's a lot of great property
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: so UM. I think that it would be all in
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: terms of even maybe looking for a great shape or
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: shaper at one time or another. And you may some
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: blow mind my website or my social media handler. That's
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: really cool. So how how involved were you in this
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: whole process? Because I know I involved, you're on your
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: your fashion designs and because you've done so much, but
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: now that you're going to everyday people, so which means
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: it's more a mass, a mass relationship. So you're trying
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: to you're trying now to meet a lot of people
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: needs and with a fashion So how did that did
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: that play anywhere? Did that play anywhere into your mindset
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: about how can I you know, because you know, to
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: make eight famous people on the cover or eight to
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: tempt famous or Oprah or Madonna. You're you're talking on
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: one on one now you're sitting in the room with
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: some individuals. You have this great idea. You you're touching fashion.
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: You should. I wanted to appeal to everyone. What does
- 2:13:46Speaker 1: that exactly? Does that statement mean? What does the statement
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: made when I say appeal to everyone? What what does
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: that statement mean to you when I say that? Well,
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: that means everything to me because that's what my st
- 2:14:00Speaker 1: pay and Go is to help women to trans transform
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: and uplifts and feel better about their bodies, about their fashion.
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: I want to give women um clothes that work best
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: for their body types. I think women um need to
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: have better choices pretty to body types. And that's what
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: I want to do, UM and give them options that
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: really work for their lifestyles and keep them comfortable and
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: fashionable being shaped up. You know what. You know what
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: I like when I hear you keep saying the word
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: body type, which I think is really could to hear
- 2:14:34Speaker 1: because a lot of people sell stuff and they just
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: tell you they're just trying to squeeze you into a
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: look and yourself. You know, I'm just I grew up.
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: I'm I'm my old school guy. I grew up my
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: mom with keyboard girdles, you know, and and and and
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: so and so that was just and she was just
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: squeeze in there. It wasn't do her body type. It
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: was just she she was just just just trying to
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: reshape some stuff so she can put on that dress.
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. So and so that's what
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: I'm talking about when I because you're saying that a lot,
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: which is really great, which means that the customer comes first,
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: which means that you're trying to style it, stylizes to
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: their comfort zone and I'm not saying every time my
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: mom walked out that dough, but I don't think you
- 2:15:12Speaker 1: walked out that dough comfortable. I really don't know. I
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: think you just walked out that that they're trying to
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: hold up to hold to get through the day for
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: being squipper. But well, the thing is, that's what's great
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: and why my shapers are identified as revolutionary right, um,
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: because the fabric is where all of the magic is.
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: Today we have, like I said before earlier, Um, a
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: lot of times the fabrics weren't conducive to what I
- 2:15:45Speaker 1: needed as close change and got dinner and more, you know,
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: closer to your body. You couldn't use all the boning
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: and all the stiff things that of course it would take.
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: So you needed more comfortable fabrics. And so that post
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: surgical fabric became a go to from me to create
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: the shaper so that it wouldn't feel like you're saying
- 2:16:03Speaker 1: your mom would feel it makes struggle to get it on.
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: When you get it on, there's a comfortability to it
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: that just moves with your body and flows and has
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: a has a great feeling of security and and pulling
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: in and compression. But it's in a comfortable way, and
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: so that way you can get the book. You know
- 2:16:24Speaker 1: the benefits of both worlds. That get the fit and
- 2:16:27Speaker 1: then I get the comfort as well, the transformation and
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: the comfort, and that is why we call it revolutionary. Well,
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: let me tell you something. It's exciting to talk to
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: you about. You know what, men that have six sisters
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: form older than me and knowing how my mom, you know,
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: walked out that door. And I don't think she was
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: happy every time she walked out that door, but she
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: walked out that door. That's all she had to work with. Yeah,
- 2:16:51Speaker 1: and then for you to come on my show and
