After her July 2020 arrest, Ghislaine Maxwell launched an almost continuous campaign of complaints about the conditions of her confinement at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Through her attorneys, Maxwell argued that she was being treated more harshly than an ordinary pretrial detainee because of Jeffrey Epstein’s death in federal custody the year before. She complained that correctional officers repeatedly awakened her during the night with flashlight checks, depriving her of sleep and making it difficult to prepare for trial.
