- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. Toward the end of Luke Chapter
- 0:457, we see Jesus dining at the House of a Pharisee named Simon.
- 0:49While they were seated at the table, a woman from the city,
- 0:52known publicly to be a Sinner, came to Simon's house with an
- 0:55expensive bottle of perfume. She stood behind Jesus and wept,
- 0:59wetting his feet with her tears. Then she bent over and wiped his
- 1:03feet with her hair, literally washing his feet with her tears
- 1:07and her hair. She kissed his feet and then
- 1:09poured the expensive perfume on them.
- 1:12Simon the Pharisee, seeing this unorthodox foot washing taking
- 1:15place, said to himself, if this man were a prophet, he would
- 1:20know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching
- 1:22him, that she is a Sinner. Jesus, knowing exactly what was
- 1:26going on in the mind and heart of Simon, responds.
- 1:29Listen to their exchange. And Jesus answered him, Simon, I
- 1:33have something to say to you. And he replied, say it, teacher,
- 1:37a money lender had two debtors, 1 owed 500 denarii and the other
- 1:4250. When they were unable to repay,
- 1:45he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him
- 1:48more? Simon answered and said, I
- 1:51suppose the one whom he forgave more.
- 1:54And he said to him, you have judged correctly.
- 1:57Turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, Do you see this
- 2:00woman? I entered your house.
- 2:03You gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet
- 2:06with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
- 2:09You gave me no kiss, but she, since the time I came in, has
- 2:13not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with
- 2:16oil, but she anointed my feet with perfume.
- 2:20For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have
- 2:23been forgiven, for she loved much, but he who has forgiven
- 2:27little loves little. Then he said to her, Your sins
- 2:31have been forgiven. Jesus teaches Simon and us here
- 2:36that the evidence of forgiveness is love.
- 2:39If we know of how much we've been forgiven, then our love
- 2:42will reflect it. This love poured out by the
- 2:45sinful woman was a demonstration of the reality that she, despite
- 2:49being a great Sinner, had been forgiven by God.
- 2:53Think this through, though we know Romans 323 for all have
- 2:57sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
- 3:00We know Romans 623 for the wages of sin is death, but the free
- 3:04gift of God is eternal life. In Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 3:07We are all sinners, and in light of who God is and all His
- 3:12Holiness, we are all great sinners.
- 3:15However, the blood of Christ is so powerful, the grace of God is
- 3:19so strong, that no matter how great of sinners we are, we can
- 3:23be forgiven through the free gift of salvation that God
- 3:26offers through Christ. So here's the question for you
- 3:29and for me. If we have been forgiven, does
- 3:32our love reflect the forgiveness we have received?
- 3:36If we are all great sinners and we have been forgiven, then
- 3:40friend, we have been forgiven much.
- 3:43Even the 500 Nariai in Jesus parable is nothing in comparison
- 3:47to the eternal debt that has been forgiven us.
- 3:50So rejoice in the forgiveness you have received.
- 3:53Take stock of what God has done for you and pour out your
- 3:57gratitude for His grace in deep, deep love for God and for your
- 4:02fellow man.
