- 3:08Speaker 1: is co hosting her podcasts and upcoming faith based book.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I want to talk to her about this coming out
- 3:14Speaker 1: in One Bamboozoo by Jesus Hi, God tricked me into
- 3:18Speaker 1: the life of my dreams. Please work on the Money
- 3:21Speaker 1: Making Conversations. My girl, Yvonne or g Hey, what's going on? Well?
- 3:27Speaker 1: First of all, first of all, I want watching the special.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'm going I see a rock star. I see Beyonce,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I see Kelly Roland coming out there, just bouncing on
- 3:36Speaker 1: the stage. Now I'm telling something. I'm a former stand
- 3:39Speaker 1: up comic. I don't want to claim it because I've
- 3:40Speaker 1: been on stage in many years. But you came out lit,
- 3:43Speaker 1: You came out and brought the heat at the beginning
- 3:45Speaker 1: of your stand up. Is that how all your sets are?
- 3:48Speaker 1: You just made it special for that for the HBO special.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Oh no, that's I'm high. I told I told, HU said,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna give you part documentary, part music video, part
- 3:58Speaker 1: comedy special. They was what I was like, this rock
- 4:01Speaker 1: with me on this, rock with me on this And
- 4:03Speaker 1: that's why I really, you know, really wanted Chris Robinson
- 4:07Speaker 1: to direct my special because he you know, Chris Robinson,
- 4:10Speaker 1: He's done any music video do you think of that
- 4:14Speaker 1: was bombed Chris robinsons while behind it and some ways
- 4:17Speaker 1: people want and so I was like, and he's also
- 4:19Speaker 1: a hometown he wrote um um and so uh he's
- 4:25Speaker 1: from the NBA should stage. When he's like what home
- 4:27Speaker 1: down he goes up from the the m v U.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But yeah, no, all my shows are hype, Like I
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'm one of those times that come off with a
- 4:33Speaker 1: lot of energy and a lot of the off time
- 4:36Speaker 1: like offer it um because I can that just texts
- 4:38Speaker 1: the phone. I feel like if I feel like if
- 4:40Speaker 1: then audience was having at the time, I mean, they're
- 4:42Speaker 1: gonna have a good time with the jokes place you
- 4:44Speaker 1: get them, like come on, we could guard down like
- 4:49Speaker 1: I want to be happy up here and I want
- 4:50Speaker 1: you to be happy over there. So if we all
- 4:53Speaker 1: on the same thing left at the rock, I think it. Yeah, okay,
- 4:59Speaker 1: because over tell you this because you'll see the character
- 5:02Speaker 1: and insecure your lawyer. You you know, you really don't
- 5:06Speaker 1: show that type of energy on this on this series
- 5:08Speaker 1: that you become famous for. And so when you came
- 5:11Speaker 1: out on the stage like that and you know you're
- 5:13Speaker 1: looking finding you was tall statue wash right and everything
- 5:16Speaker 1: he was rocking and and everything running from side to
- 5:19Speaker 1: side of the stage. That was a positive play on
- 5:22Speaker 1: my energy sitting at the house. So I know it.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I know it played big in that theater, Howard Theater
- 5:27Speaker 1: in d C. Oh. Absolutely absolutely, I mean the camera
- 5:32Speaker 1: pans to the audience and they were like I had
- 5:37Speaker 1: I had the artist mid Low, so that that was
- 5:39Speaker 1: an original track, creative specifically for the trailer and the
- 5:43Speaker 1: artist mid Low. She did her sting on that on
- 5:46Speaker 1: on that track, and so it was like to be
- 5:49Speaker 1: able to give back the time and the space for
- 5:52Speaker 1: it to breed, for it to be like, yo, Mama,
- 5:55Speaker 1: we made it, you know, and and just everyone not
- 5:58Speaker 1: knowing what took SAgs like you know, it wasn't just
- 6:04Speaker 1: like an entrance song. It was like, no, we're making
- 6:06Speaker 1: an entrance. You made an interest, you made a not
- 6:11Speaker 1: legos Nigeria. You know, we cut, we do interplay on
- 6:14Speaker 1: the inserted in the whole process. And fell in love
- 6:17Speaker 1: with your mom. I know she's taking care of I
- 6:19Speaker 1: know what. She's still there, you know because when you
- 6:21Speaker 1: when you brought the groceries in, I would tell you something.
- 6:23Speaker 1: When you brought the cinema raisins bagels, I believe, and
- 6:27Speaker 1: then the cineamon bread, I went, that's my girl right there.
- 6:31Speaker 1: See that's all I eat. I reached. I love cinnamon
- 6:34Speaker 1: toast with the little raisins in it, and I love
- 6:36Speaker 1: the cinema episode. So when when you brought that in,
- 6:39Speaker 1: me and her were on the same page. We could
- 6:40Speaker 1: eat breakfast together every day of the week. And I said,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but it was just a really really natural atmosphere. Did
- 6:46Speaker 1: you created? You just want to show people where you
- 6:48Speaker 1: came from. And I was so going back and showing everybody,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know, you really did make it. Von Oh, I'll
- 6:56Speaker 1: create that. I'm in, I'm in the prophet of continue
- 7:00Speaker 1: thing to make it. But I made it this far,
- 7:02Speaker 1: but there is there is far more to go about that.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But you know, I think that's funny because that was
- 7:08Speaker 1: one of those things that I could leave right, you
- 7:10Speaker 1: getting right, I'm giving all these things, and he still
- 7:14Speaker 1: hung up on one thing that I did not deliver.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And I'm like, love, But you know the thing about
- 7:19Speaker 1: when I said, you made it? You know I come
- 7:21Speaker 1: from the hood, you know, uh, six sisters, two brothers,
- 7:24Speaker 1: father was a truck driver, mom graduated from high school
- 7:27Speaker 1: and uh and everywhere. You know, you have goals that
- 7:30Speaker 1: I could tell you from your from watching your career,
- 7:32Speaker 1: watching the special your goal or in it. And you
- 7:34Speaker 1: also are blessed by the opportunity that have been received
- 7:38Speaker 1: by you, and so you at each point I feel
- 7:41Speaker 1: that when you said, when I said you've made it,
- 7:43Speaker 1: this is like winning the super Bowl. You want to
- 7:45Speaker 1: win another super Bowl, you know, but you're gonna tell
- 7:47Speaker 1: everybody I wanted this super Bowl and I felt that
- 7:50Speaker 1: that's what they're special. When I was watching it, watching
- 7:53Speaker 1: you return home and Legos was it was it was.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It was a testament to saying, look, you can do it.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm doing it, okay, and I'm gonna come here and
- 8:01Speaker 1: show you. HBO is gonna follow me. I'm bringing my
- 8:04Speaker 1: boy Chris with me. He's gonna direct me, and we're
- 8:06Speaker 1: gonna throw down at Howard Theater and I'm gonna show
- 8:08Speaker 1: you where I came from, to show you that I
- 8:10Speaker 1: came from over here. My family is still living. They
- 8:13Speaker 1: get to share your brother, get to share in your love,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and get to tell less story. That's what I'm saying
- 8:18Speaker 1: when I say you made it, because believe me, I
- 8:21Speaker 1: know your journey to greatness. It's still it's still at
- 8:24Speaker 1: the top of the iceberg. Okay. I appreciate that. Man,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm like, yo, you are. I appreciate you let me
- 8:33Speaker 1: in speaking good life over my life now obviously brother, obviously,
- 8:38Speaker 1: well you know the thing about it is that you know,
- 8:40Speaker 1: the thing about it is that as as a female
- 8:43Speaker 1: stand up comedian. You know, I know, as a stand up,
- 8:46Speaker 1: it's tough for African American stand up. Before Death Comedy
- 8:49Speaker 1: Jam came along, I was doing jokes, you know, Jared Finnfield,
- 8:51Speaker 1: Dennis Leary, Sam Kenniston and all that. Then Death Comedy
- 8:54Speaker 1: Jam came by, and it opened a whole new world
- 8:57Speaker 1: for black comedy to come to the mainstream, start feeling
- 9:00Speaker 1: the venue, start feeling the comedy clubs. And then being
- 9:03Speaker 1: a female comedian, you know, there's a different path to that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Talk about your life as a female stand up coming up.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I know you're open for Chris Rock, but there's a
- 9:12Speaker 1: journey and a path that you have to deal with
- 9:14Speaker 1: being a female stand up, and especially being a black
- 9:17Speaker 1: female stand up. Can you talk about that, talk about
- 9:21Speaker 1: the path you said? I'm sorry, no, no, I'm just
- 9:24Speaker 1: talking about the path you take as a stand up.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But of course, being a black female stand up that's
- 9:28Speaker 1: a different journey too, because of the fact that it's
- 9:30Speaker 1: a male dominated industry for sure. I mean, and I think,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I think, I think the fact that God made me
- 9:37Speaker 1: night hearing, which is you got to have like a
- 9:40Speaker 1: thick a thick skin. Boy, you got to do that,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and you're in the rough. We even say good morning,
- 9:46Speaker 1: ro good morning, Why are you yellous? Why are you?
- 9:49Speaker 1: Why are you gonna? So we we kind of have
- 9:52Speaker 1: that demeanor. And then you know, I grew up with
- 9:55Speaker 1: three older brothers and dad for god that I was
- 9:57Speaker 1: a girl. Like they said that. I said that absolutely,
- 10:02Speaker 1: So I think that was all the preparation. You know,
- 10:05Speaker 1: sometimes you think about like why am I in this family?
- 10:07Speaker 1: But then it's like, oh, you know what I had
- 10:09Speaker 1: to be in the family, you know, to learn these
- 10:11Speaker 1: things because y'all would go open the door for me
- 10:13Speaker 1: to be in this profession that you know is male dominated.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But I come from the heavily peach society, so this
- 10:20Speaker 1: this is no biggie you know. I know when I
- 10:22Speaker 1: started people, I would you know, I I sat. It
- 10:25Speaker 1: was always big for me. So I was like, even
- 10:27Speaker 1: though I'm gonna be on stage, I'm I'm a look amazing,
- 10:30Speaker 1: because I would always say my joke bomb or my
- 10:33Speaker 1: outfit is gonna be bombed, you know what I mean,
- 10:35Speaker 1: like because they're gonna like something about these and so
- 10:38Speaker 1: I always made sure to like look presentable, um in
- 10:42Speaker 1: that way. And I remember going to comedy clubs and
- 10:45Speaker 1: they would be like, oh you you were to do?
- 10:48Speaker 1: Are you here the thing? And I'd be like at
- 10:50Speaker 1: the comedy club and you know, it was just like, well,
- 10:53Speaker 1: what do you here to do? Like you there's almost
- 10:55Speaker 1: like you to cute, you're too pretty, could be funny.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And I was like, well, y'all can get these jokes,
- 11:00Speaker 1: then I'm sorry to disappoint you, brother, and you know,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and it was kind of like, wait, so for a
- 11:07Speaker 1: black female comic, you can either be overweight and funny
- 11:11Speaker 1: and you know because we know because we know what
- 11:13Speaker 1: that looks like. Or you know, you can be like
- 11:17Speaker 1: hood and funny but like intelligence, slim, pretty actable and
- 11:23Speaker 1: you got jokes we don't know. And I was like, well,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't I don't subscribe to that, and I don't
- 11:29Speaker 1: believe that that that those are my options. And that's
- 11:32Speaker 1: what that's what here the stage on his special because
- 11:37Speaker 1: you know, I'm not gonna tell people the jokes. I'm
- 11:38Speaker 1: not gonna tell people your routine. I'm gonna tell people this.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You came out on the stage lit if you do
- 11:44Speaker 1: not miss the opening because she's on fire on the opening,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and she carries that fire into her humor. You know,
- 11:50Speaker 1: like a lot of comments to do that. They come
- 11:51Speaker 1: out on stage with a lot of energy, and in
- 11:53Speaker 1: the show kind of like every five minutes gets less
- 11:56Speaker 1: and less funny. That is not happening here. Okay, she
- 11:59Speaker 1: knew I'm talking about. They come out there, be jumping
- 12:01Speaker 1: around and be clapping in everything, and crowd be tired.
- 12:05Speaker 1: They tidy work the crowd out. They be tired, and
- 12:08Speaker 1: you come out there. And the thing about it is me,
- 12:10Speaker 1: as a former stand up I always look at people
- 12:12Speaker 1: that go if they do material that go, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I never thought of that. I would never have thought
- 12:17Speaker 1: of that joke. You do a lot of that. You're coming,
- 12:19Speaker 1: You're very observational, You're very socially gifted and understanding how
- 12:25Speaker 1: you can just always tell people about jokes. You know,
- 12:28Speaker 1: every good joke is a hard right or hard left.
- 12:30Speaker 1: You know, it throws you for a curve and you
- 12:32Speaker 1: and you do a very good job of that and
- 12:34Speaker 1: honing that skill. And so when you when you talk
- 12:37Speaker 1: about your stand up, even what journey you trying to
- 12:41Speaker 1: tell people when your own stage, are you trying to
- 12:43Speaker 1: relate to any of it it. To the women, are you
- 12:45Speaker 1: trying to make a statement? To the guys? Are you
- 12:47Speaker 1: just trying to be funny? I apreciate that, you know.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I think I think humor for me in my life.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I think there's a place and entertainment to uh, humor
- 12:59Speaker 1: and education, right, I think, you know, or or to
- 13:04Speaker 1: entertain and to educate. I should say, um and content.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And you know, I know it's like you don't a
- 13:09Speaker 1: little comedy show again a lecture, but it's like, no,
- 13:11Speaker 1: comedy is the way where you learn the most, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: in such a digestible form. Right, every every comedian is
- 13:20Speaker 1: teaching you something. You're teaching you about them. They're teaching
- 13:23Speaker 1: you about the way they see the world. They're teaching
- 13:25Speaker 1: you about like how you a problem to the world.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But you didn't know and so um, you know through
- 13:31Speaker 1: my jokes and through my humor, I didn't. Uh. I
- 13:35Speaker 1: know that my crowd is heavily female, right, I know
- 13:40Speaker 1: I have the young female population who are like they height,
- 13:46Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Somebody Roy was junior, uh
- 13:49Speaker 1: he I love him so much. He came to my
- 13:52Speaker 1: show in New York and he was like first of all,
- 13:54Speaker 1: you got a crowd that lays out their clothes the
- 13:56Speaker 1: night before so they can't ready. But you're from your
- 14:00Speaker 1: He's like you you kind of a crowd that they
- 14:02Speaker 1: lay out there close to me, like we go on
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Ebron organ Show. We got look fraid, I was
- 14:06Speaker 1: like when God blessed it and then he was like,
- 14:08Speaker 1: you got to gamely employed crowd and you got the
- 14:11Speaker 1: people who you know they early. You know, that's what
- 14:17Speaker 1: I saw. I'm genious that that's what I saw. I saw.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I saw a contractive crowd. I just throwing a common
- 14:21Speaker 1: club called hip hop Common. Just stop and I told
- 14:23Speaker 1: everybody when the good looking women started showing up to
- 14:25Speaker 1: my club, I knew I was a hit, you know
- 14:27Speaker 1: because because that's you know, the brand was on fire then,
- 14:30Speaker 1: because once they show up and lay out them close
- 14:33Speaker 1: and make an appointment that they're gonna come here and
- 14:35Speaker 1: spend their dollar and spend two or three hours of
- 14:38Speaker 1: day time someplace. That's what I got. So I was
- 14:40Speaker 1: I was it was like a look back on me, going, wow,
- 14:43Speaker 1: she really is carried a weight of of of a
- 14:46Speaker 1: group of people for for the next ten fifty twenty years.
- 14:49Speaker 1: That's gonna be a growing fan base. But I know
- 14:52Speaker 1: I just gotta switch gears right quick and congratulate you
- 14:56Speaker 1: because we don't talk about the fact that we are
- 14:58Speaker 1: talking about your HBO special Mama I Made Did, which
- 15:00Speaker 1: premieres on HBO June six, but being renewed on Insecure
- 15:05Speaker 1: for another season. Why the season is still going on?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Talk to me about that energy, talk about that love
- 15:10Speaker 1: for the series and the characters that you share the
- 15:13Speaker 1: screen with on that show. Man, I hit a piece
- 15:16Speaker 1: that I was like, this is amazing one the season
- 15:21Speaker 1: is still going on to we in the middle of
- 15:23Speaker 1: a band melic like how we would have shut down?
- 15:26Speaker 1: And NHBO believes in the shows the leg that are like,
- 15:29Speaker 1: may'll coind of that? Because in case there was ever
- 15:31Speaker 1: anyone worried? But never then let outside open up again,
- 15:34Speaker 1: y'all go, y'all gonna going to productive and if just
- 15:37Speaker 1: at a time we don't even know what productions are
- 15:39Speaker 1: gonna look like, but it feels like, but we we're
- 15:42Speaker 1: gonna fear out what the fifties don't look like? Um,
- 15:45Speaker 1: And so I just thought that was a blessing. I
- 15:47Speaker 1: really did. I thought like, Wow, that was a blessing
- 15:51Speaker 1: and also how they believe in us as well um
- 15:55Speaker 1: as a show and as and and what they know
- 15:58Speaker 1: that our show that the community of creatives in the
- 16:02Speaker 1: comedy of Stands were watching in the weekend. So it's
- 16:05Speaker 1: it's great. I look forward to seeing the stories you
- 16:08Speaker 1: get to tell. You know, ef year in a row.
- 16:11Speaker 1: You know, you're an all romantic this season. You know,
- 16:13Speaker 1: we got your ball. You know, y'all ain't got talent
- 16:15Speaker 1: that's been with each other, you know, but it's a
- 16:17Speaker 1: very romantic season for you this say this this year,
- 16:20Speaker 1: so we gotta definitely carried it over to the next thing.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Of course, I don't know what's happening and how that
- 16:24Speaker 1: relationship is kind of in and I'm not gonna tell
- 16:26Speaker 1: anybody about the relationship. You just need to watch Insecure.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'm talking to Eve in order here the third and
- 16:32Speaker 1: fourth quarter, we know this country is gonna be opened up.
- 16:34Speaker 1: We know June six, you have a special on HBO
- 16:37Speaker 1: that's gonna be on fire. I'm telling she's rocking the stage,
- 16:40Speaker 1: she's lit the cross led, she brings the comedy for
- 16:42Speaker 1: one entire hour. They have it to cuts in it
- 16:45Speaker 1: that goes back to her hometown. You get to see
- 16:46Speaker 1: a family, get to see the community gets here, how
- 16:48Speaker 1: she grew up a little bit of a fan base
- 16:50Speaker 1: and Legos Nigeria. My boy Chris Robinson, I do know
- 16:54Speaker 1: him back in the back in two thousand we shot
- 16:56Speaker 1: uh Fitts video together, so I know the talent that
- 16:59Speaker 1: he brings to the table. You went back to Howard
- 17:02Speaker 1: Theater and watching the DC to do it, Yvonne, your
- 17:04Speaker 1: special girl. And I am not saying you've made it,
- 17:07Speaker 1: but you had to tell your mama that you did
- 17:10Speaker 1: make it when you take this HBO special. That's all
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm saying. Girl, Yes, yes I did. I got keep
- 17:17Speaker 1: so I think she knows it. I think I just
- 17:19Speaker 1: need to keep reminding her like no, we made we did.
- 17:21Speaker 1: We did with mom. We're not what we used to be. Right. Well,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you know it. It's a it's a tender moment in
- 17:28Speaker 1: the end of a special where you know when you
- 17:30Speaker 1: got emotional all comedy aside, when did the realization that
- 17:34Speaker 1: you was able to call home and say that and
- 17:37Speaker 1: that that was a point your moment for me, because
- 17:39Speaker 1: you know, we're on struggle and we we're trying to
- 17:41Speaker 1: define our success sometimes based on what other people are doing.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But but in that moment that you talk about it
- 17:46Speaker 1: in in the in the in the video, in the
- 17:49Speaker 1: end of the one hour special about calling Home, can
- 17:51Speaker 1: you before we wrap up the show, can you just
- 17:52Speaker 1: talk about that for a couple of seconds and and
- 17:54Speaker 1: we're signed off and tell everybody watch your special. June six,
- 17:57Speaker 1: I'm talking to Yvonne Orgy, the star Been Secure, the
- 18:00Speaker 1: star of our HBO special, star of a podcast. She
- 18:03Speaker 1: has to do book coming out there when she comes
- 18:04Speaker 1: to our bambooster by Jesus, how God tricked me into
- 18:07Speaker 1: a life of my dreams that's coming out in one
- 18:09Speaker 1: she'd be back on the show and talk about that.
- 18:11Speaker 1: This show we just talked about how she was just
- 18:13Speaker 1: tan the stage, put it on fire. But on that stage,
- 18:16Speaker 1: when you're putting on the five end of the special,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you got emotional on me. Evan, talk to me about that.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I did. I did because it was it was a
- 18:24Speaker 1: full circle moment. Man. When I moved to New York,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and you know this as a comic, it was it
- 18:30Speaker 1: was there's a whole bunch of bring the shows, but
- 18:32Speaker 1: I didn't bring nobody here. I didn't bring nobody in
- 18:35Speaker 1: the New York by myself, and it was like, in
- 18:36Speaker 1: order for you to get stage time, you need five friends,
- 18:39Speaker 1: saying full price and to drink bro. If I did
- 18:43Speaker 1: have friends, I'm about to lose all of them trying
- 18:44Speaker 1: to you know, work out this five and into material.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So it was one of those like moments of like
- 18:50Speaker 1: the rubber about to meet the road. And because I'm
- 18:52Speaker 1: not during we're so entrepreneurial in our mindset, and because
- 18:56Speaker 1: I'm a woman of sage, I'm just like all things
- 18:58Speaker 1: are possible. Uh. And so there was an open mic
- 19:01Speaker 1: that somebody was giving up. They were like moving out
- 19:04Speaker 1: of town, and they were just like, we need somebody
- 19:06Speaker 1: to big up with the room. And it was me
- 19:08Speaker 1: and a whole rack of young male comics and nobody
- 19:12Speaker 1: was jumping and after me, I was doing it. I
- 19:15Speaker 1: didn't know nothing about running nobody's room, but I was like, no,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'll run the road because the way my mind thought
- 19:21Speaker 1: was good. If I can't get faith termed anywhere else,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna get at least one day a week, two
- 19:28Speaker 1: hours on the stage was perfecting my and everyone that
- 19:32Speaker 1: I'm running and they just looked, I get to meet
- 19:34Speaker 1: other comics. I'm in the community that I'm struggling to
- 19:37Speaker 1: get into because they're gonna want to come to me
- 19:39Speaker 1: to get a stop. So like I'm gonna read the
- 19:41Speaker 1: book us Like it was just it just felt like,
- 19:44Speaker 1: this is what I'm gonna do. This just makes the
- 19:46Speaker 1: most sense. And it was one of those opportunities that
- 19:48Speaker 1: presented itself not as a lucrative opportunity by any means,
- 19:51Speaker 1: because it cost me on that show, it cost you
- 19:54Speaker 1: to buy an amplifier and a good mic and learn
- 19:56Speaker 1: it like it was a real world and not just
- 19:58Speaker 1: like a stop on another comment, you know, open mic
- 20:02Speaker 1: in order to get to the next show. So you know,
- 20:05Speaker 1: but what came from that was the name and I
- 20:07Speaker 1: called it my mom made it because at that moment
- 20:10Speaker 1: I was like, man, I wouldn't it be dope if, like,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you know, a booker for any of these late night
- 20:16Speaker 1: you know shows, came by and they could see you
- 20:19Speaker 1: and then they could put you on. I dream I
- 20:21Speaker 1: dreamed big, I still dreaming, And I'm like, wouldn't that
- 20:24Speaker 1: be dope? And that's what this room was set up
- 20:27Speaker 1: to do. And like, because who doesn't want to call
- 20:29Speaker 1: home to tell their mom? Like mom made it? Uh,
- 20:31Speaker 1: and so that was the hope, that was the anticipation
- 20:34Speaker 1: behind the open mic night, and when it came trying
- 20:37Speaker 1: to do the special, I was like, you know, this
- 20:38Speaker 1: is a full circle moment right now, Like I get
- 20:41Speaker 1: to I get that have that dream of me trying
- 20:44Speaker 1: to put other people on, so now me getting put on.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And that's why, that's that's why I love choked up
- 20:50Speaker 1: at the end, you know, fire girl, I would let
- 20:52Speaker 1: you go here. We were up against the Clark. I
- 20:54Speaker 1: want to see the June six is an HBO special.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I'm talking to the fantastic, the tall, the funny, to
- 20:59Speaker 1: be beautiful from Lagos, Nigeria. She's entrepreneurial, she got multiple jobs,
- 21:04Speaker 1: multiple skills. You've seen a night school. You see her
- 21:06Speaker 1: every sun or Insecure renewed. So she knows she has
- 21:09Speaker 1: a job in the future. She knows she has a
- 21:10Speaker 1: funny HBO special. So you have a lot of jobs
- 21:13Speaker 1: in the fall. My friend, I always know you can
- 21:15Speaker 1: come to money making conversation you talked to with Sean McDonald.

- 23:25Speaker 1: one of my favorites. She's my favorite. Okay, my next
- 23:28Speaker 1: guest television writing credit. Because a lot of people know
- 23:30Speaker 1: I'm a former sitcom writer. Okay, so when I see
- 23:34Speaker 1: people who are writing, they have just a body of
- 23:36Speaker 1: work that she has. I'm always feel is a blessed
- 23:39Speaker 1: conversation because he has a skill set that's a phenomenal.
- 23:42Speaker 1: How Producing and writing credits include ABC's Pushing Daisies, ABC's Castle,
- 23:47Speaker 1: The c w S, Jane, The Version, The Jane, The Virgin, Marvel, Netflix, Daredevil. Currently,
- 23:53Speaker 1: she is the co creator, co show runner, executive producer
- 23:56Speaker 1: for Apple TV plus new series Home Before Docs Already,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Jim Sturgis and the amazing Brooklyn Prince. You'll find out
- 24:03Speaker 1: why we when we start the interview, which has been
- 24:06Speaker 1: renewed for a second season. Now, that's all you want
- 24:09Speaker 1: in this business is getting renewable. But when you get
- 24:11Speaker 1: when you write a series, you produce a series and
- 24:13Speaker 1: before air it gets renewed. That's a blessing. And Mr.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Inspired by the report of a real nine year old journalist,
- 24:20Speaker 1: the storyline goes like this, when a young girl and
- 24:22Speaker 1: her family moved back to the small town, her father
- 24:24Speaker 1: left behind her pursuit, meaning nine year old girl of
- 24:28Speaker 1: the Truth leads to the unearthing of a long buried
- 24:31Speaker 1: code case. Please work with the money making conversation. Co creator,
- 24:34Speaker 1: co showrunner, executive producer of Home Before Dark, da Rest
- 24:39Speaker 1: Nick h U, I, you was that a lot, because
- 24:47Speaker 1: you know you got a lot going on, you got
- 24:49Speaker 1: you're one of those a lot going on people. And
- 24:52Speaker 1: that's impressive. That's impressive. Thank you, that was really incredible.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I want you to follow me around everywhere. You know
- 25:00Speaker 1: something with the story lines did you have that could
- 25:02Speaker 1: be written in You know, we do our bouge to
- 25:07Speaker 1: include everything that needs to be included. And like you said,
- 25:10Speaker 1: I've been blessed to work on a lot of different
- 25:12Speaker 1: kinds of shows because that would work. That would definitely
- 25:16Speaker 1: work in the Jane the Version series. Me following around
- 25:18Speaker 1: introducing you wherever you go. That could definitely working at
- 25:21Speaker 1: Jane the Virgin for sure. Now when I look at
- 25:24Speaker 1: this body of work, you know it, First of all,
- 25:26Speaker 1: it's just shows a range I say comedy, I see drama,
- 25:28Speaker 1: I see action, adventure, sci fi. Uh. And then this
- 25:32Speaker 1: then we have this new series series Home Before Dog.
- 25:34Speaker 1: If you don't mind, Before we get to Home Before Dog,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I just like to talk about it, compliment you on
- 25:40Speaker 1: your body of work, uh, that you that you put before,
- 25:43Speaker 1: and just just just just tell us about your mindset
- 25:46Speaker 1: from a creative standpoint, when you walk into projects and
- 25:49Speaker 1: such a such a level of diverse projects that that
- 25:52Speaker 1: I've just presented to the listeners on my podcast money
- 25:55Speaker 1: Making Conversations, But I just I go wherever I'm called.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I mean, I know that that sounds overly spiritual, probably
- 26:04Speaker 1: for this conversation, but I really do try to read
- 26:09Speaker 1: everything that comes my way and think about whether or
- 26:12Speaker 1: not it's the thing that needs to be made or
- 26:14Speaker 1: the thing that needs to be said at that time,
- 26:17Speaker 1: um and so. And also by the way, sometimes it's
- 26:19Speaker 1: just something that I feel passionate about. Obviously, like Daredevil
- 26:23Speaker 1: said a lot about justice and uh, you know about
- 26:26Speaker 1: vigilante justice in particular and having to work sometimes outside
- 26:29Speaker 1: the system. But like, ultimately, I was really just excited
- 26:32Speaker 1: to work on a Marvel show because I'm a nerd.
- 26:34Speaker 1: So you know, it's it's sometimes it's fun and sometimes
- 26:37Speaker 1: there's messaging. Um. In terms of why I go where
- 26:41Speaker 1: I go, that's the reason, and in terms of like
- 26:44Speaker 1: why the different genres and the breadth of the work.
- 26:48Speaker 1: One of the things I really love about what we do.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And I tell this to my students because they teach
- 26:51Speaker 1: at USC on Sundance and a couple other places. We
- 26:55Speaker 1: can really write ourselves out of any corner. And it's
- 26:58Speaker 1: been sort of the most beautiful part of my career
- 27:02Speaker 1: has been this ability to not get pigeon holes into
- 27:04Speaker 1: anyone thing. It's every time, you know, you think, Okay, well,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I guess she's a romantic comedy writers, right, well, let
- 27:10Speaker 1: me show you this dark drama that I just wrote
- 27:12Speaker 1: completely keep your expectations. So um so yeah, it's it's
- 27:17Speaker 1: really is one of the most wonderful things about being
- 27:19Speaker 1: a writers, being able to have that breath and it's beautiful.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I'm looking at your body work now. Okay, I'm a
- 27:25Speaker 1: nerd Marvel Netflix, Okay, Daredevil, my wife and I oh,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I'm telling you you. We we just couldn't wait and
- 27:33Speaker 1: we were being too when he started. We didn't stop
- 27:37Speaker 1: every time. Now to starve the show. Charlie Cox, Okay,
- 27:43Speaker 1: incredible athletes, excellent actor. But the fight scenes though, Dora, Yeah,
- 27:50Speaker 1: I mean, and you know one of my favorite all
- 27:52Speaker 1: time fight scenes was when he was coming down the stairwell.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Remember that scene. Incredible, Yeah that we we used that
- 27:59Speaker 1: fight scenes the hallways. That hallway fight scene was the
- 28:02Speaker 1: stairwell one in my episode, the fire escape one. There's
- 28:06Speaker 1: always there's a hallway one in um the first season,
- 28:11Speaker 1: which is incredible. That's like a one. And then the
- 28:16Speaker 1: five Escape one was really really fun to shoot. Yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 1: And you know, one of the things that was really
- 28:21Speaker 1: cool for me was I went from Shooter, you know
- 28:24Speaker 1: where we only had seven days to shoot our sequences
- 28:27Speaker 1: and didn't always feel as safe as it might. Um
- 28:32Speaker 1: and and uh and then we went I went to
- 28:35Speaker 1: Daredevil and I was really I mean, that machine is
- 28:38Speaker 1: such a I'm very happy for everybody at Dizzy plus
- 28:40Speaker 1: who are who are now? You know, getting to make
- 28:42Speaker 1: these new Marvel shows. That the way that those Marvel
- 28:45Speaker 1: Netflix shows was was run was really quite remarkable, and
- 28:49Speaker 1: they took such painstaking care to make every single one
- 28:53Speaker 1: of those action sequences fun as how, completely reminiscent of
- 28:57Speaker 1: the comics, and also really safe for everybody involved. So
- 29:01Speaker 1: it was really it was by the way. I grew
- 29:04Speaker 1: up in New York City, So I would text like
- 29:06Speaker 1: my my movie nerd friends who I grew up with,
- 29:09Speaker 1: and be like, I am shooting and actively because hang
- 29:15Speaker 1: out on the soup and the fears of my friends.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's awesome. You know the thing about
- 29:23Speaker 1: Dared Devil and I and I'm not gonna I'm gonna
- 29:25Speaker 1: bring up okay that those two fight scenes were great,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and then the fight scene where he had to break
- 29:30Speaker 1: out of the prison. Remember that. One of course, my
- 29:34Speaker 1: dear friends one Aster Dean wrote wrote that one, and
- 29:37Speaker 1: I mean he killed it. That's my favorite sequence in
- 29:40Speaker 1: the whole season. Okay, now I'm gonna tell you my
- 29:42Speaker 1: favorite scene sequence was when the Punisher. Remember when the
- 29:45Speaker 1: Punisher was singing to kill that guy and he had
- 29:49Speaker 1: to he came out and realized he had been set
- 29:51Speaker 1: up and he had his way. Yeah, that was the
- 29:57Speaker 1: most That was bloody. That was bloody of hell. That
- 29:59Speaker 1: was come on, dog. That was brutal. But I loved it.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I went wow, I just I was tired watching it.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I'm like, this guy has to be incredible shape. I
- 30:11Speaker 1: was like, yeah, oh my god. So so it's just
- 30:15Speaker 1: it's just the fascination of being able to do work
- 30:18Speaker 1: like that. Do I just I'm kind of, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 1: like a bill on your shoulder, just watching some time
- 30:24Speaker 1: because that stuff is great. I'm a little nerried. I'm sorry.
- 30:27Speaker 1: It's really fun and you know that, really it really
- 30:30Speaker 1: is a good fact to the thing that I started saying, right,
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's like one of the reasons to sign on to
- 30:35Speaker 1: a Marvel show has that kind of read. If you
- 30:38Speaker 1: can actually sort of within that, you can use that
- 30:42Speaker 1: as a platform to say whatever you want to say.
- 30:44Speaker 1: You can talk about vigilante justice, you can talk about
- 30:47Speaker 1: in the system, you can and you know that it's
- 30:48Speaker 1: actually getting out there in the world as supposed to.
- 30:51Speaker 1: When I was on, I was Dick. I loved I
- 30:53Speaker 1: Love Dick. It was great, but ultimately I'm pretty sure
- 30:55Speaker 1: we were mostly preaching to the choir. I don't think
- 30:58Speaker 1: that the feminist method got much beyond the feminist audience
- 31:03Speaker 1: you know that ended up finding it. So the Marvels
- 31:05Speaker 1: doesn't really are really special because of their reach. Well
- 31:08Speaker 1: they're not only special because the writing. I love the
- 31:11Speaker 1: character development, you know, and you know how you remember
- 31:15Speaker 1: when he came, he was in the he was at
- 31:16Speaker 1: the bottom I think it bottom that church and just
- 31:18Speaker 1: watching him suffer and to deal with the pain. And
- 31:22Speaker 1: I guess you're saying this, this dude really did watch series.
- 31:25Speaker 1: It's really I'm sorry we were and and everybody on
- 31:29Speaker 1: the show like really took such incredible care with the
- 31:34Speaker 1: with the original material. Everybody with a deep fan of
- 31:38Speaker 1: the material, everybody read the most recent comics. We wanted
- 31:42Speaker 1: to make sure that it was something that the deep
- 31:44Speaker 1: fans of the show would love but also be surprised by, right,
- 31:48Speaker 1: you know, be influenced by the comics, but not follow
- 31:50Speaker 1: them so closely that everybody knew what was coming. Um,
- 31:53Speaker 1: it was a real bummer for everybody when that got canceled.
- 31:56Speaker 1: But I was really, while you're gonna do that, doll,
- 31:58Speaker 1: why are you going to do that? You're going bring
- 32:00Speaker 1: up the bed. See, we were going to good you know,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I know it's canceled, you know, I know, God, God
- 32:05Speaker 1: bless but I really wanted that fourth season for all
- 32:09Speaker 1: the folks. I say. I was very lucky by then.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I had moved on to home before dark, but I
- 32:13Speaker 1: had a lot of friends who are still on the
- 32:14Speaker 1: show were really fun to great transition to an amazing
- 32:18Speaker 1: series that I had the fortune of screening this weekend
- 32:22Speaker 1: and and watching amazing NAYR actress called Brooklyn Prince. You know,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, you know Dakota Fanning. I thought she was brilliant,
- 32:31Speaker 1: you know, watching her do her thing, um, and didn't
- 32:35Speaker 1: transition in through teen and now as an adult actress.
- 32:38Speaker 1: She is always very difficult to do um, I'm looking
- 32:42Speaker 1: at this young lady tell us about her. Uh. In
- 32:45Speaker 1: the whole casting process to bring on board, and before
- 32:48Speaker 1: we really get into detailed about the series, Home Before Dark,
- 32:52Speaker 1: we were very lucky in that we were told that
- 32:56Speaker 1: Brooklyn Princess parents were not that excited about doing a
- 32:59Speaker 1: television and shows that they you know, they knew that
- 33:02Speaker 1: that was a commitment that they didn't necessarily want to
- 33:04Speaker 1: put their kids through because they have a very they
- 33:06Speaker 1: have very nice life in Florida, like as a regular family.
- 33:09Speaker 1: And um, we sort of the woman who brought me
- 33:13Speaker 1: the original underlying material said to me, you know what
- 33:17Speaker 1: if we just send it to her and let's just
- 33:19Speaker 1: see what happens. And we got them to read it
- 33:21Speaker 1: and they and Brooklyn both loved and read the script.
- 33:24Speaker 1: And in the means whom we had been we had
- 33:26Speaker 1: been auditioning all of these other kids and none of
- 33:28Speaker 1: them were getting it. I mean, looking back the idea
- 33:31Speaker 1: that we were we decided to do a television show
- 33:33Speaker 1: about a nine year old girl without having the said
- 33:36Speaker 1: nine year old girl attack already, who we knew could
- 33:39Speaker 1: actually handle this sort of it's crazy that we decided
- 33:42Speaker 1: to do that because the show could have been a
- 33:43Speaker 1: disaster with the wrong kids. UM. But we ended up
- 33:46Speaker 1: getting her and her father to read with John to
- 33:50Speaker 1: our director UM on a long distance audition. And the
- 33:55Speaker 1: thing that was so remarkable was that Brooklyn and her
- 33:58Speaker 1: dad would like correct each other. I have this sort
- 34:00Speaker 1: of peer relationship where like, hey, Dad, you missed the
- 34:03Speaker 1: line and he's like, oh sorry, And you can see
- 34:05Speaker 1: that they really respected each other as colleagues. As much
- 34:09Speaker 1: as you know she's he's also her father, and that's
- 34:11Speaker 1: exactly the same as the real healthy and her father.
- 34:14Speaker 1: They deeply respect each other and they have a very
- 34:17Speaker 1: peer like relationships. They're almost like, you know, crime investigative,
- 34:21Speaker 1: like crime partners in a lot of ways. The way
- 34:23Speaker 1: that they tell stories is almost like the way like
- 34:25Speaker 1: people who have been married for fifty years tell stories
- 34:28Speaker 1: like remember when you did the thing in the place
- 34:30Speaker 1: that Okay, find you tell that part like no, you
- 34:32Speaker 1: got that part. And that's very much Brooklyn and her dad,
- 34:35Speaker 1: because we knew that Brooklyn would understand what we were
- 34:38Speaker 1: writing in terms of like reflecting the real healthy Oh,
- 34:42Speaker 1: it's just beautiful. It's just a beautiful UM script. Uh.
- 34:45Speaker 1: You know, the one thing I love about watching creative
- 34:49Speaker 1: writing is you know, the story, watching the story developed,
- 34:52Speaker 1: you know, and so but before we go into the story,
- 34:55Speaker 1: let's talk about the real healty. And yeah, and I
- 34:59Speaker 1: saw a social media post where you know, she had
- 35:02Speaker 1: gotten stop by police officer I believe in Arizona, and
- 35:05Speaker 1: so she videotaped that and they posted it and then
- 35:09Speaker 1: you reach you you you've made a comment to on
- 35:12Speaker 1: social media, and then she said something about she doesn't
- 35:14Speaker 1: do any interviews, and it was really funny watch this
- 35:18Speaker 1: a little mature girl, I have this conversation with adults
- 35:21Speaker 1: at a very professional level, talk about that whole that
- 35:24Speaker 1: whole relationship. I got all kicked off because I was
- 35:26Speaker 1: just laughing watching I just watching the whole relationship fault
- 35:30Speaker 1: build itself out on social media and your your interaction
- 35:33Speaker 1: and you're a naturally funny person. Dog, I'm just gonna
- 35:36Speaker 1: let you thank you. It's really funny, it's really sweet.
- 35:39Speaker 1: I mean, so, yes, she is incredible. She's a tiny warrior.
- 35:44Speaker 1: And now she's actually not so tiny anymore. She's at
- 35:48Speaker 1: years old. Um, but when we met her, she was
- 35:51Speaker 1: a tiny warrior. And you know, one of the things
- 35:53Speaker 1: that I actually I love about that video that you're
- 35:55Speaker 1: talking about, By the way, that's a great example of
- 35:57Speaker 1: like using your privilege in a way that your people can't. UM.
- 36:02Speaker 1: And I think that even though she's a journalist and
- 36:04Speaker 1: she's non biased, I think she's very aware of that.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I think that she's aware of what she can and
- 36:09Speaker 1: can't do, and feels the obligation to report on those
- 36:13Speaker 1: things specifically because she can. UM. One of those things
- 36:17Speaker 1: that she said to us was, you know, one of
- 36:19Speaker 1: the one of her Even though she doesn't like it
- 36:21Speaker 1: when people call her a young journalist, she's just a
- 36:24Speaker 1: journalist to her. She's also aware that, like being a
- 36:28Speaker 1: young female white child in America, I mean, the people
- 36:31Speaker 1: will sort of say and do things around her, they'll
- 36:34Speaker 1: let their guard down in a way that they kind
- 36:36Speaker 1: of normally wouldn't. And that was I mean, people literally
- 36:40Speaker 1: would just confess things to her. You know, she in
- 36:43Speaker 1: her tiny town in Pennsylvania. She uncovered a mess ring,
- 36:48Speaker 1: she uncovered a vandalism rings. And basically these were just
- 36:53Speaker 1: people who didn't take her seriously enough to realize that
- 36:57Speaker 1: she was going to be essentially handing them straight into
- 37:01Speaker 1: the arms of d S. Sorry. UM. And so we
- 37:07Speaker 1: were really just so taken by her, and we were
- 37:11Speaker 1: really taken also by, you know, her relationship with her father,
- 37:16Speaker 1: who was a daily news reporter UM for many, many
- 37:19Speaker 1: years covered homicides in the Bronx and covered Save One Martin,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and covered New Town. And he got so disillusioned by
- 37:26Speaker 1: the news and the clickbait of it all that he left.
- 37:31Speaker 1: He left New York. He took his four girls and
- 37:34Speaker 1: his wife and brought them to seal Scow, Pennsylvania, back
- 37:36Speaker 1: where he was from, and he could write. He was
- 37:39Speaker 1: really depressed. Um. He was supposed to be writing a book.
- 37:43Speaker 1: And Hilde, who he had taken to all of these
- 37:46Speaker 1: crime scenes, was the only one of his four daughters
- 37:48Speaker 1: who had been interested in journalism, started riding her bike
- 37:51Speaker 1: around sealing Scrow, Pennsylvania and reporting these very small, very
- 37:56Speaker 1: truthful stories, including just down the street, a man killed
- 37:59Speaker 1: his wife for the hammer, and she scooped the local
- 38:02Speaker 1: paper of that story. UM, and and then those the
- 38:07Speaker 1: story went viral, and the comments for the story went viral.
- 38:10Speaker 1: The comments were awful. They were all about, you know,
- 38:12Speaker 1: you're just a little girl, why aren't you having tea parties?
- 38:14Speaker 1: And she's like, if you don't like the news. Why
- 38:16Speaker 1: don't you do something about the news? And I love
- 38:21Speaker 1: and that brought Matt, her dad out of his depression,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and it really brought the whole family. Shining a light
- 38:28Speaker 1: on the truth and reporting just the facts brought the
- 38:32Speaker 1: whole family back together. So I mean, I don't know
- 38:34Speaker 1: how this to be not inspired by that story. You know, well,
- 38:37Speaker 1: you do the thing about it. You could be inspired
- 38:39Speaker 1: by the store, but how you develop it and make
- 38:42Speaker 1: it and maintain some level of realness and also entertainment
- 38:46Speaker 1: because this is entertainment, And and then as you built
- 38:50Speaker 1: the story out, you know, basically the reason the show
- 38:53Speaker 1: worked for me, it really is a parenting show. It's
- 38:55Speaker 1: a parenting storyline. It's about it's about a relationship between
- 38:59Speaker 1: a coming of age with her her sister, older sister.
- 39:03Speaker 1: You have a marriage that's it's it's dysfunctional, that has
- 39:06Speaker 1: to find itself, a father, father's son. It's a lot
- 39:10Speaker 1: of abc D stories that I felt were really relatable,
- 39:15Speaker 1: and it's all sent around It's all centers around this
- 39:18Speaker 1: young girl, which is saying stay true to yourself, don't
- 39:22Speaker 1: let bullying turn you, don't let the people not understanding you.
- 39:27Speaker 1: And even in the story as we go through, there's
- 39:30Speaker 1: some conflict with the dad, you know, because he suddenly
- 39:33Speaker 1: wants to become a parent, and and and and and
- 39:36Speaker 1: and it's really it's really that's what I enjoyed about it.
- 39:39Speaker 1: And and I never was bored in the whole process.
- 39:43Speaker 1: But it was just watching this young lady developed and
- 39:46Speaker 1: then you guys doing that little nice little skills set.
- 39:48Speaker 1: She has like a photographic memory type and that's real,
- 39:53Speaker 1: that's actually true, has that kind of memory. So it
- 39:57Speaker 1: was it was an easy thing to throw in there
- 39:59Speaker 1: because it was reality of the of the real kids. Well,
- 40:03Speaker 1: all I wanted to just say is this is that
- 40:05Speaker 1: you know this series right, you know, I recommended every
- 40:09Speaker 1: all my fans on social media, all my fans whatever,
- 40:12Speaker 1: Anty thousand um email fan newsletter goes out every Friday,
- 40:17Speaker 1: nine am. I'm putting it in that um I from
- 40:22Speaker 1: the very beginning, I fell in love with this young lady,
- 40:25Speaker 1: Brooklyn Prince. If you guys know anything about them, to
- 40:28Speaker 1: talking to my listeners, now look her up. She's a
- 40:31Speaker 1: bona fide star and then she cries. She cries immediately,
- 40:36Speaker 1: she laughs, immediately, she controls the scene. She knows how
- 40:40Speaker 1: to she knows the level. But throughout I think the
- 40:44Speaker 1: key in this series she remains a nine she remains
- 40:47Speaker 1: a nine year old child, Darry. That was the key
- 40:49Speaker 1: for me, you know, because sometimes can't get these these
- 40:52Speaker 1: kids actors and they go, you you're an adult. You're
- 40:54Speaker 1: not You're not an adult. You nine years old? Right?
- 40:57Speaker 1: And I never believe that she was not nine years old.
- 41:01Speaker 1: She's just a small your girl. And I bought the
- 41:04Speaker 1: storyline that guess what, you know, she learned these things
- 41:07Speaker 1: from following her dead on crime scenes. And so all
- 41:12Speaker 1: the all the layers that you wanted the story to
- 41:14Speaker 1: bring credibility to stories, you definitely put in there. Your
- 41:17Speaker 1: your skill as a writer, as a co creator, as
- 41:20Speaker 1: a co executive doucer, as show runner, and all excuse me,
- 41:24Speaker 1: executive and co show runner shows out and brilliant body
- 41:28Speaker 1: at work. So so I just want to stay before
- 41:30Speaker 1: the close. So what happens when you do a series, Dora,
- 41:34Speaker 1: and then they renew it, they reknew it, do before
- 41:37Speaker 1: you even air? What runs? Do your mind? And did
- 41:39Speaker 1: you go I don't even know if I'm if I'm
- 41:44Speaker 1: supposed to say this, but I'll say it anyway, Like
- 41:47Speaker 1: we actually got renewed before we were even i think
- 41:51Speaker 1: officially done with the pilot, essentially based on the basis
- 41:56Speaker 1: of how the pilot looks like it was turning out
- 41:58Speaker 1: and how we had and all the other scripts for
- 42:01Speaker 1: the season. So they were judging it based on how
- 42:02Speaker 1: the scripts were coming in. So yeah, I mean we
- 42:05Speaker 1: were pretty floored. We we were. We were you know,
- 42:08Speaker 1: there's those moments where you I mean, it was even
- 42:16Speaker 1: more than even more than I'm renewed, although yes, absolutely that,
- 42:20Speaker 1: it was also like how did I get this lucky?
- 42:25Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like how do I get
- 42:28Speaker 1: this lucky to live this life and have this opportunity?
- 42:31Speaker 1: Like holy craps. So that was really incredible. Um, and
- 42:36Speaker 1: you know, unfortunately the pandemic happened right in the middle
- 42:39Speaker 1: of the second season. But you know, we'll get back
- 42:42Speaker 1: to work as soon it's safe to get back to working.
- 42:44Speaker 1: In the meantime, this has really offered me an opportunity
- 42:47Speaker 1: to do a bunch of other stuff that I'm really
- 42:50Speaker 1: excited about. So, you know, appreciate, I appreciate you, I
- 42:55Speaker 1: appreciate you your body of work with talkingature. If fam mus,
- 43:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna call it if fam mus Dara res Nick.
- 43:03Speaker 1: You know I love you, girl. She has a great series,
- 43:08Speaker 1: Come Home Before Dark. It started by man Jim Sturgeons.
- 43:12Speaker 1: He's the dad of Brooklyn Prince. Who was this uh
- 43:15Speaker 1: this this amazing young detective recorder. I can't wait till
- 43:19Speaker 1: the next season series of shows coming because I'm telling
- 43:22Speaker 1: you I started at ten o'clock on Saturday morning. I
- 43:27Speaker 1: finished at seven o'clock on Saturday night. I watched it
- 43:32Speaker 1: in my office, then I grabbed me a sandwich in
- 43:34Speaker 1: the kitchen with my laptop and finally finished up watching
- 43:38Speaker 1: my sprinkler system go off in my front yard on
- 43:41Speaker 1: my front porch. It was that good. I'm telling you,
- 43:44Speaker 1: Home Before Dark is a body of work that's this
- 43:47Speaker 1: borderline uh fanatical for me. You know, I'm just I'm
- 43:50Speaker 1: a nerd or now I'm a fan Okay, so Dark,
- 43:53Speaker 1: I don't want to hold you any longer. I just
- 43:54Speaker 1: want to let you know thank you for allowing me
- 43:56Speaker 1: to compliment you, and not only on this body of work,
- 44:00Speaker 1: but to share a fantasy. I got to talk to
- 44:02Speaker 1: a person who actually created those amazing scenes on Daredevil,
- 44:06Speaker 1: which will live with me for the rest of my life.
- 44:08Speaker 1: My wife and I we both enjoyed that series, so
- 44:10Speaker 1: she's a fan of your of your work as well.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And just keep winning. Okay, you too. This is the
- 44:16Speaker 1: bright spot I really needed. I I really I hope
- 44:19Speaker 1: that you're good out there. And I cannot tell you
- 44:21Speaker 1: how much I appreciate the support. I appreciate you and
- 44:23Speaker 1: you keep supporting me. And guess what, we're friends now. Okay, Dara,
- 44:27Speaker 1: you got it. Keep winning. Bye bye, ADP. We work
- 44:32Speaker 1: with more than eight d sixty thousand companies worldwide. That
- 44:36Speaker 1: gives us a pretty good idea of how to help

- 44:44Speaker 1: better as a team, or by keeping you ahead of
- 44:47Speaker 1: thousands of changing regulations so you can keep ahead of

- 45:05Speaker 1: the and there they go, almost on time. This morning.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Mom is coming out the front door strong with a
- 45:11Speaker 1: double arm kid carry. Looks like dad has the bags.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh, but the diaper
- 45:17Speaker 1: bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere. Oh, but
- 45:23Speaker 1: mom has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for
- 45:26Speaker 1: the toddler. And now the eldest daughter, who looks to
- 45:29Speaker 1: be about nine or ten, has secured herself in the
- 45:31Speaker 1: booster seat. Dad zips the bad clothes and they're off. Ah,
- 45:36Speaker 1: but looks like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup is
- 45:38Speaker 1: still on the roof of the car and there it goes. Ah.
- 45:43Speaker 1: That's a shame that mug was a fan favorite. Don't
- 45:46Speaker 1: sweat the small stuff. Just nailed the big stuff, like

- 47:19Speaker 1: He'll be next scene in Spike Lee's new Netflix film
- 47:22Speaker 1: The Five Bloods. The premiers Friday, June twelve. Please welcome
- 47:27Speaker 1: to money Making Conversation. There are Lindo. How are you doing, sir, Well, yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 1: right now, I'm in Northern California. Awesome, awesome, Um, I
- 47:39Speaker 1: want to get started with this. First of all, I
- 47:40Speaker 1: saw the movie and UM, I just wanted to compliment
- 47:43Speaker 1: you on this, um, this role. When you get a
- 47:46Speaker 1: script like this, sir, what are are there any expectations?
- 47:50Speaker 1: Because you have outstanding monologues in it is a tortured
- 47:54Speaker 1: soul character. Uh, doesn't have a relationship with the sun
- 47:58Speaker 1: and the care in the movie. Tell us about the
- 48:01Speaker 1: script when it was, when you received it and as
- 48:03Speaker 1: it developed along the way. We're talking about the script
- 48:05Speaker 1: The Five Bloods, which will premier Friday, June twelve on Netflix. UM,
- 48:12Speaker 1: when I received the script, it was clear to me
- 48:14Speaker 1: that it was a very rich uh. Um I was.
- 48:21Speaker 1: I was. I feel really good about the fact. That's
- 48:23Speaker 1: like it called me and just asked me, offered me
- 48:28Speaker 1: the part in the film. Um. Was one stumbling block
- 48:32Speaker 1: that I have when I first read the script, which was,
- 48:36Speaker 1: UM that the character is such an ardent Uh Trump supporter. Uh,
- 48:43Speaker 1: I am not Trump supporter. It was a little bit
- 48:46Speaker 1: of a stumbling block, but we got over that. I
- 48:48Speaker 1: read the script an additional two or three times and
- 48:51Speaker 1: I rationalized in my head, how and why, Um, the
- 48:57Speaker 1: character of Paul that I'm playing in the film would
- 49:00Speaker 1: arrive at a place where he feels compelled to to
- 49:03Speaker 1: vote for this person. UM Larger than that for me.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Um Equally, if not more important than that for me
- 49:12Speaker 1: is the fact that the more when I read the
- 49:15Speaker 1: script the first two or three times, it became really
- 49:18Speaker 1: clear to me that Paul is a very large tragic character.
- 49:24Speaker 1: You mentioned him being a tortured soul, and my interpretation
- 49:29Speaker 1: was that he is a a tragic character in the
- 49:35Speaker 1: same way that a lot of Shakespeare's tragic characters, the
- 49:38Speaker 1: Hamlets and the Beths and the Othellos and any of
- 49:42Speaker 1: those kinds of characters, or the larger characters. And August Wilson,
- 49:46Speaker 1: Harold Rumors Um and I related to Paul as being
- 49:52Speaker 1: a tragic a large tragic character, and that was really
- 49:56Speaker 1: interesting to me um as an actor to kind of
- 49:59Speaker 1: investigate it that And so I called back back and
- 50:03Speaker 1: I said, yeah, I'd love to do this, and I'm in.
- 50:06Speaker 1: And to your question of how how it was working
- 50:10Speaker 1: um on on on the film, it was. It was extraordinary. Um.
- 50:16Speaker 1: We had the five of us and I'm including I'm
- 50:21Speaker 1: including Chadwick in this. We had a real ch rich bond. Um.
- 50:27Speaker 1: I say, the five of us I'm speaking about Clark
- 50:30Speaker 1: Peters as Love Jr. Norm Lewis, Jonathan and and Uh
- 50:36Speaker 1: and Chadwick. We had a really we formed a really
- 50:40Speaker 1: really good bond, and the bond that we had off
- 50:43Speaker 1: screen um found its way into the work that we
- 50:46Speaker 1: were doing in front of the camera. So overall it
- 50:49Speaker 1: was just a very very rich, enriching and deeply gratifying experience. Well,
- 50:56Speaker 1: you know, I I when I watched the movie, first
- 50:58Speaker 1: of all, it felt like a history lesson to me,
- 51:01Speaker 1: which was really which was really great. You know, to
- 51:04Speaker 1: understand that because the Vietnam Vietnam War was it was
- 51:09Speaker 1: about history and how a lot of how Africans would
- 51:12Speaker 1: treat the African Americans would treated and how that era
- 51:15Speaker 1: was being dealt with both stateside, and when you were
- 51:18Speaker 1: over there fighting for a war that you had no no, no, no,
- 51:21Speaker 1: what I said, no beefan And so how how was
- 51:24Speaker 1: your take on that when you started? Even when Chadwick Boseman,
- 51:28Speaker 1: how how he worked a dialogue I'm talking about Spike
- 51:31Speaker 1: Lee into his character which was Storm and Norman when
- 51:33Speaker 1: you guys were talking, and it really was brilliantly the
- 51:37Speaker 1: way it was. It was It was articulated in the script.
- 51:39Speaker 1: Give me your feedback on that, sir. UM. You know
- 51:44Speaker 1: this was UM really well articulated, as you say, UM
- 51:52Speaker 1: the story. Yes, it was cleanly uh and sharply articulated
- 51:59Speaker 1: to turn times of the script that we had to
- 52:02Speaker 1: work with. And then on top of that, the work
- 52:04Speaker 1: that we put in I'd like to believe further sharpened
- 52:09Speaker 1: UM the message. UM. What I had done in preparation
- 52:16Speaker 1: for for doing this work, I had spoken with a
- 52:19Speaker 1: number of Vietnam vets. UM or two that I spoke
- 52:23Speaker 1: with were my cousins. I had two cousins who were
- 52:26Speaker 1: uh Inam, both of whom UH suffered stuffer with pd
- 52:31Speaker 1: a PTSD, one of my cousins more acutely than the other.
- 52:36Speaker 1: But they shared a lot of their experiences with me.
- 52:41Speaker 1: And then I UM additionally spoke with I think five
- 52:47Speaker 1: four additional Vietnam vets. And then I spoke with U
- 52:54Speaker 1: a lady, a major who had been in Iraq, and
- 52:57Speaker 1: she spoke with me at length about her experiences with PTSD. So,
- 53:03Speaker 1: going into the film, I felt that I had a
- 53:06Speaker 1: really good foundation to start working. And as we worked,
- 53:13Speaker 1: when when you mentioned some of the monologues, that Chadwick
- 53:18Speaker 1: has and the fact that he's he's articulating really clearly
- 53:22Speaker 1: from a from a socio political and cultural point of view,
- 53:26Speaker 1: that we had no business being there, and and Chadwick's
- 53:31Speaker 1: characters going the norm is a man who is attempting
- 53:35Speaker 1: to uh, exactly a measure of um, what's the word.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I don't want to give the plot of a way,
- 53:45Speaker 1: but if we're going to be there fighting this war,
- 53:49Speaker 1: we're going to get something out of it for ourselves
- 53:51Speaker 1: and more importantly for our people. And that is a
- 53:55Speaker 1: central tenant, a central component of what this story is.
- 54:00Speaker 1: And so do your question about how it felt working
- 54:02Speaker 1: on it? Um, it felt it felt right, itselt. You know,
- 54:07Speaker 1: There's there's something that is really extraordinary for an actor,
- 54:10Speaker 1: and that is when you're working on the two that
- 54:13Speaker 1: you believe in. And I believed in this material. I
- 54:20Speaker 1: believed in what we were doing as a unit, um,
- 54:24Speaker 1: and I think all of us did, and certainly I
- 54:27Speaker 1: believed in Spike's ambition to tell this story in the
- 54:31Speaker 1: way that he did. So to a question about how
- 54:35Speaker 1: I felt about, you know, um, Chadwick's monologues, they just
- 54:39Speaker 1: felt right. And our job then was to present those
- 54:46Speaker 1: words in as um dramatically compelling away as we could.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I'm talking to my man darry Or Lindo, one of
- 54:55Speaker 1: the stars of The Five Blood. The premiers Friday, June
- 54:58Speaker 1: twelfth on Netflix. The I blow us about movie about
- 55:01Speaker 1: five guys who served together in Vietnam, But it's also
- 55:04Speaker 1: a movie about black history, which we just talked about.
- 55:06Speaker 1: It plays out like a reunion movie, but there are
- 55:09Speaker 1: it's really also a treasure hunting movie too, correct, That's right? Uh,
- 55:15Speaker 1: And I think one of the one and again without
- 55:18Speaker 1: giving the product way, you think one of the real
- 55:25Speaker 1: positive components of this story is that it kind of
- 55:29Speaker 1: crosses a number of genres. Right. You mentioned the treasure hunts,
- 55:35Speaker 1: You mentioned the the fact that it's it's there are
- 55:39Speaker 1: historical components that we're addressing in the film. For myself,
- 55:44Speaker 1: I also think of the film as a love story
- 55:48Speaker 1: between these five men. The five brothers have a connection,
- 55:52Speaker 1: a deep, deep, deep, deep, deep connection, and out of
- 55:56Speaker 1: that connection, they are compelled, um to go back and
- 56:00Speaker 1: and set the record straight. Um. So you know, it
- 56:07Speaker 1: covers a number of different genres. Um. Ultimately, though, I
- 56:12Speaker 1: in my own personal opinion, I think it's a love
- 56:14Speaker 1: story between these these guys and with regard to the
- 56:18Speaker 1: historical components, one of the most critical, one of the
- 56:22Speaker 1: critically important components and aspects of this film is the
- 56:26Speaker 1: fact that you have these five cats who are front
- 56:30Speaker 1: and center in this quote unquote um war UM, this
- 56:36Speaker 1: conflict related story. Because because because of the fact that
- 56:42Speaker 1: it's said squarely in the center of the Vietnam War UM,
- 56:49Speaker 1: it doesn't have is being told from their point of view,
- 56:54Speaker 1: and that rarely, rarely happens, almost never happened. You know.
- 56:58Speaker 1: The thing. The thing I wanted to make a comment
- 57:00Speaker 1: and other reasons I think important. It's it's it's important
- 57:04Speaker 1: what you're saying, and it's important to the fact that
- 57:07Speaker 1: I've been fortunate to see you in a lot of
- 57:09Speaker 1: great roles. You know, you have a brilliant career. I
- 57:13Speaker 1: will tell you what I saw you doing this movie.
- 57:17Speaker 1: The monologue you were delivering dead on into this into
- 57:21Speaker 1: the into the camera was incredible acting. And I pray
- 57:27Speaker 1: that I see you rewarded for your acting effort in
- 57:30Speaker 1: this movie. It was that good, there are it was
- 57:33Speaker 1: that good, fantastic or that And that's why I said
- 57:37Speaker 1: it was a tortured soul to me because of the
- 57:39Speaker 1: fact that you know, the relationship that you couldn't understand
- 57:42Speaker 1: what your son you know, and we learned about that,
- 57:46Speaker 1: you know, the problem that you was coming back into
- 57:47Speaker 1: a country that you didn't feel comfortable while you know,
- 57:51Speaker 1: even though there was love, that was still a disconnect
- 57:54Speaker 1: between you and your boys, and it kept trying to
- 57:56Speaker 1: wrap their arms around you. And we later all find
- 57:59Speaker 1: out why you're emotionally distraught like the way you are.
- 58:03Speaker 1: But the journey, can you can you get get a
- 58:06Speaker 1: little bit more detail about that journey Because I'm not
- 58:09Speaker 1: an actor. All I can do is just watch great
- 58:12Speaker 1: moments on screen. And when I saw you take all
- 58:15Speaker 1: these levels, these anger, anger levels, these happy levels, like
- 58:19Speaker 1: the nightclub scene when you would dancing. I'm gonna tell
- 58:21Speaker 1: you something. I already told Clark he couldn't dance. I
- 58:25Speaker 1: told I said, anybody doing the chicken in the movie
- 58:29Speaker 1: can't dance. I'm just gonna tell you that right there now,
- 58:31Speaker 1: there are you can't do the chicken. You can't dance.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And then uh, I said, he was trying to be cool.
- 58:37Speaker 1: But all the brothers who had their act together there
- 58:40Speaker 1: are it was you. You had the smooth. He was
- 58:43Speaker 1: on the left hand side, he was smoothing and up
- 58:46Speaker 1: there on that Marvin Gate song, I said, my man,
- 58:49Speaker 1: that's him right there. It was those fun moments in
- 58:52Speaker 1: a movie that showed me the love that you were
- 58:55Speaker 1: talking about. That played throughout each moment in the movie,
- 59:00Speaker 1: even when you were emotionally destruct they still came to
- 59:03Speaker 1: your restu trying to understand what's wrong. What's wrong? Let
- 59:06Speaker 1: us in, brother, Let us in brother. That's what I
- 59:09Speaker 1: was just saying. It just it. It takes it took
- 59:11Speaker 1: a moment for you to wrap your head around each
- 59:13Speaker 1: scene or just or just took each the character. I'm
- 59:16Speaker 1: a player and just staying character the whole time. Can
- 59:18Speaker 1: you talk to us about that? Um? Yeah, Before I
- 59:23Speaker 1: speak to that, I just wanted to say something about
- 59:25Speaker 1: because you mentioned it a couple of times, the relationship
- 59:28Speaker 1: between myself and my son played by Jonathan What was
- 59:32Speaker 1: gratifying about um investigating that relationship in the film is
- 59:39Speaker 1: the fact, clearly as you as you accurately mentioned, clearly,
- 59:44Speaker 1: there's a lot of tension between myself and my son. However,
- 59:52Speaker 1: what was what was what was rewarding for me affirming
- 59:57Speaker 1: is the fact that fundamentally there is love there between
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: these two men, myself and my son. And even though
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: it was a very very fraught relationship. UM, what was
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: what made it, what made it interesting to work on
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: in the film, UM, is the fact that it was
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: clear to me that there was love there and that
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: unflicked between the love and the lack of love, and
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: and the and the dislike and the frustration felt very
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: very human and very real to me. And that made
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: it rich to UH to work on in the film.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: UM with what was your original question? Because I kind
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: of veered off. You know, it was great, but I
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: wanted to I want to go to another moment because
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: you've answered my question. It was the moment where because
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I was talking to the guys and it was just
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: talking about your acting, and it was it was, I'm
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: not giving away the movie when you walked off from
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: the guys. You like the moment when you walked out,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: walked off. They say a storm, they said a storm.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Suddenly we're just ugly head in that moment. But you
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: have to stay in character and and and and and
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: play it out. You can you explain to me exactly
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: what they were talking about. What, Oh, you're saying this
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: is what the other two actors references, Yes, saying that moment. Yeah,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: we walked to say this. Let me just say this
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: about that, about that that moment in the film that
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: was that was a straight up gifts from God. And
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: what I mean by that is that as I was
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: walking away from um, from my compadres in the film, literally, man,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: the sky opened up and there was a storm. It
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: started to storm. It started, I mean the sky and
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: it just started torrential torrential rain. The wind was kicking up,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and we played through that right right, And trudeos to
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: trudos to the sound the engineer because he got got
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: it right. He able to record all the dialogue that
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: was going on as I was walking away from them.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: The fact that there was this added dimension of the
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: sky opening up and the fact that the scene ended
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: up playing out in a storm that Spike and all
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: the technical crew captured on film felt to me that
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: that the film was anointed. Man when we when he said,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: when Spike finally said cut and I walked back to
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Lord towards Spike, and Spike had this huge grin on
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: his sad jumping up and down love and I and
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: it felt it just felt right. And I didn't say
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: this to him in the moment, but internally I was
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: feeling that was an anointed moment. It was because we
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: could not have entered that, We could not have planned
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: for the storm to start right at the end of
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: that scene. Fact that that's going good start right at
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the end of the scene, for me, was indicative of
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the fact that this work was anointed. And having seen
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: the film, um, I fulfilled that the work is annointed.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something when I because you know,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I got a huge background in television and film and
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: producing and all that. So I'm watching this scene right
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: and I'm with my wife, I'm going, how they getting
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: that rain like that? That? I it waste? It was
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: called It's what we call a happy accident. Man. There,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out where the water truck is.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out how did they drop this
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: water like this? I'm going, and you in it, and
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, that was a blessed man because you
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: stayed in the moment though there are you stayed in it? Now?
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: We all did. We all did. And one of the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: things that really really astounded me was the fact that
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the sound the sound guy right, um acted he got
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: it somehow. Um. And this is this is a test
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: he just got to be a testament to his skill level.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: He was able to set the audio balance in such
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: a way that the fact that it was storming and
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: raining and the wind was kicking up and he still
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: was able to get Um, he still was able to
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: get the audio quality. Now, you know, that was the
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: scene that I did have to go into the studio
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and do a d R. You know, I had to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: re record that tale ended of the scene. Still when
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I stirst saw it on production, he had captured it
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: and you know, um, it was just anointed. Man, I'm
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: just gonna an expert. I didn't catch it, didn't see
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: the I didn't see any at all. I heard it
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: was played that you know the thing that I'm very
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I'm very first of all, thank you for being on
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: the call with me, because when you see a project,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: you get to get into the mind of an actor.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: It's kind of like an acting class that I and
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: then I can't act. So so anbody who's listening this
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: really should gather some nuggets about how to do it right.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Talking up, talking to all three of you guys, today
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: has been a blessing of four over four decades of
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: acting and directing and writing skills are being played out
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: in a movie of this caliber, you know, And I
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: just want everybody I'm talking about I'm talking about it.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: It was The Five Bloods consisted of Storm and Norm,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: which was played by he will Always be the Black Panther,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Chadwick Balls Bozeman. You have Paul played by Darryl Roylando.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: That's gonna pick you too, right now, and he was
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: played by Norm Lewis. Oh, this was Clark Peters. Melvin
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: was Isaiah watched Isaiah Whitlock Jr. And then you have
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Paul's son played by Johnny Majors. And so when I
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: Jonathan Major, excuse me, because you know the thing about
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: it is that when I when I look at an
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: individual like you, and we do bodies of work. And
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I'm just gonna be complimentary here. And because Spike Lee
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: said in the article that you know, I didn't have
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a c G I budget to make the guys look
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: younger in the flashback scenes. And I told the guys
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: earlier whenever I think of my past, I only only
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: see the people that I see, which are always younger,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and so so that means that I'm still at my
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: age when I'm looking, when I'm thinking about that moment.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: And so the acting that you guys were doing was
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: so fantastic. If you guys would have been made younger,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: I'd got caught up into oh he doesn't look like that.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Oh they did that because you guys stayed your age
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: and stayed the moment and stayed the emotion. It carried
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: the scenes through for me, and the reality stayed the reality.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: And so I've alread just let you guys, And that's
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: a very good point. That's that's actually that's a great
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: point because have we been, you know, be aged, you
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: would have been looking at the technical aspect that it happened,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: and I would have been taken out of the story.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: So I think this, I think that's a great point.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: And I'll tell you that in terms of playing the scene, Um,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: so th are reading it in the script and then
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: playing the scenes, it did not make any difference to
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: deal with is parent age are different because playing the
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: truth of the scene, none of the scenes with Chadwick,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: those flapping, those flashback scenes, as far as I'm concerned,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: none of us, um, none of us, Mr Bead And
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: it was just about playing the truth of the scene,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: you know. And I want to say this too, and
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: it goes back to when you say the love story,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: because the love that that Storm and Norm had, that's
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Chadwick's character for you guys as a leader, the best
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: damn soldier that ever lived it in the Vietnam War,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: that's what he was proclaimed. And and he held you guys.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: He was the glue that held you guys together. The
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: guy just told you you're gonna get back, that told you,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you know, we deserve our own level of reparations here,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: you know. And and it was that journey of conversation,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: that journey of the hand slapping. Let's talk forget that
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: that people think started now when they look at the
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: NBA and lebron them during all those multi levels of
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: hand slapping. Didn't know that started back there with us. Okay,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: then didn't know that that was something that was not
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: something new the last five years they've been saying on
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: in the NBA on the regular basis. That's that's what
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I'm talking about. I I appreciate the time you're taken
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: from me, taking with me to do this interview because
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I'm talking to history. That's you, my friend. I hope
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: History blesses you with Oscar nominations, sag Award nominations, all
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: the nominations that are available in the fall should come
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: your way. The monologues you were doing dead and on
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: on those straight to the camera, I'm telling you, Mr
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Lindo were brilliant. They were brilliant. The fact that the
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: whole character, now that I know that wasn't fake, rain
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: coming down on you, I'm even more blessed by what
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I see. I really appreciate it. I appreciate you, and
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: stay safe and uh and doing these pandemic times, and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: my prayers go out. Feel you in good luck, okay.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: June twelve, The fly Blood, Thank you. Look at your
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: children's eyes to see the truth magic of a forest.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: It's a storybook world for them. You look and see
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: a tree. They see the wrinkled face of a wizard
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: with arms outstretched to the sky. They see treasuring pebbles.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: They see a windy path that could lead to adventure,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: and they see you. They're fearless. Guide. Is this fascinating world?

- 1:10:18Speaker 1: belonging begins with us dot org. Brought to you by
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: the Accouncil. Welcome out in my shoes. My next guest
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: is a self proclaimed original bad girl of comedy. You
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: have seen her in a story born Star Is Born,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: where she shared the screen with Lady Gaga and Bradley
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Cooper Dolan. Night is My Name, starring comedy legend Eddie Murphy.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: She's also part of the cast of Coming to America Too,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: appearing in the sequel I Got the hook up to
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: with my main master p plus a new show Time
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: comedy special which I just really saw and laughed my
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: butt off called Funny Women of a Certain Age. And
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: she was in two of my movies that I executive
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: to produce, Thinking like a Man and Thinking like a
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: man to please walk in to money making conversation for
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: the very first time, Loue Nell. Hey, how you doing that?
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: Lou Nell? Hey, listen. I gotta clarify something. Though I'm
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: not self proclaimed the original backgirl of comedy, that nickname
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: was given to me. Never be so cocky is to
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: say that, But that name was given to me. Well,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: let's talk about that. What does that mean when you
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: say the original bad girl of comedy that was given
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: to you? What were you doing that made you get
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: that name? Well? Rick Sullivan, who was a comedy promoter
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: back California. Yeah, Rick gave me that name many many
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: years ago, and I guess he gave it to me
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: because you know, um, well, several reasons. I was a
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: bad girl. I was a bad girl, um sphytisically, you know.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I used to do a lot of little bar site
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: like that. I was clipped quick to slap that they
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: said something wrong back in the day, my suggar hand
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: now right. And but also because I was really really
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: um I guess bold in my statements and my delivery
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: back in the day. And there wasn't a whole lot
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: of women who were talking as reckless as I was
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: then that you know, there was there was those people
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: who had um very um direct uh opinion of course,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you know, but as when that's aggressive is yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: That's what I remember about you. You know you you
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: hit that stage. You were short, but you are a dynamite,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: you d you're a powder kid out there and you
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: and and then and you know you you command the
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: stage too. You always could. Plus you had that gravelly
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: voice which made people listen to you and you and
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: you were you are a character and it really always,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: like said, the interesting thing about it is that, uh,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I've I've watched your career, you know, I lived in
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: l A from ninten ninety finally moved to law to
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: New York in two thousand five, and I started managing
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Steve Harving two thousand So I got I get to
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I got to see your career, just like I got
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: to see Kevin Hard's career in a lot of talent
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: of the people who are who have risen to two
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: levels that they are just exploding and really popular and recognizable,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: not only just in social media but on television. And
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: so you know when I when I reached out to
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: my staff and say I want to interview through now
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you know it's it. You know, it wasn't about that
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I've never talked to you or I never never sat
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: down and you never shook your hand. It's just if
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: I've always been a fan of what you are accomplishing
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: and who what you represent and you represent on stage
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: to me honesty, Well, I thank you for that, because
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I do try to keep it honest. It's just easier
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: to be honest than it is to be fake and
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: a liar. It's it's easier to be that in my
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: real life and in my stage persona. I've never been
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: a jokey, joke type of comic. I don't tell jokes
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: like Michael Collyer, I think is the king of joke telling.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: That's true, but I don't. I don't tell jokes. I
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: tell stories like Posby and like George Cornelin and stuff
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: like that. And so that's why it's always been hard
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: for me to do something like Artinio or or something
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: where I have to be on network television, my house
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: six minutes, my setups might take sit right right right. Yeah,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: that's been difficult for me, but I was able to
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: do it because you know, when you're presented with a challenge,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: you you need to step up and do it. I
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: have been able to do it, but it's it's difficult
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: for me. Well, the thing about it is that how
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: do you is it? As an actress? Why would you
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: describe you said? Are you a character actress or your
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: comedic actress? Or what type of actress are you? I'm
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: basically a comedic actress. But I did a lot of
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: theater before I ever did film television. So I have
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: done musicals and I have done dramatic acting, and I
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: there's only one movie I think I've done where I
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: really was straight dramatic and not comedic. At all, and
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: that was Never Die Alone Robbie Reid cast me and
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: Never Die Alone with d MX. You know, d MS
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: is no joke, and so that was all about drugs
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: and murder and stuff like that. So I never did
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: any comedy in that, But I taught myself a comedic
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: actress because it's just my mind is wired so that
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I see the humor and a lot of things and
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: that's my comfort zone. But I'm sure that at some
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: point in time my career, I will be approached to
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: do dramatic acting again. And I always have the problem.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I think that if I go too deep that I
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: may not come back out. You know, if I had
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: to h play you know, have I had to do
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: something and like Selma, or if I had to do
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: something and uh like you know, Roots or something like that,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: I think it would be difficult for me to go
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: home and turn that off at night, right right right,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: They can get too deep into the character. I'm speaking
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: to Little new Uh the original Bad Girl comedy. Um.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: She started in such movies that you were familiar with
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: the stars born Ladies guy Guy Bradley Cooper in an
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: incredible movie Dolmatt is My Name Eddie Murphy. I love
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: that movie. We're gonna talk about that in a minute.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: And coming into the much anticipated Coming to America too. Uh,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: you never left the stage as a stand up. You
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: have a comedy special that you can catch right now
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: with call the Funny Funny Women of a Certain Age.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: That's and you have a couple of movies that have
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: come up as well. Let's talk. Let's go back and
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: talk about see to me, you're just naturally funny to me.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: So if somebody gives you a serious line the way
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: you just twitsch words where you look, it can come
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: out funny. And so so you're telling me that when
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: you were cast on in The Stars Born, you were
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: casting for comedy relief. No, if you remember, I only
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: really had about seven seconds of screen trying and the
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Star Is Born. And that was strictly because I have
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: a relationship with Bradley Cooper and he said, you know,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: I want to throw you mail in him Bradley want
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: Bradley loves comedians. I mean there was Andrew Clay was
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: in that, and and myself and Eddie Griffin. So it
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: was just a little quick cameo, you know, I wasn't
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I definitely wasn't put in there for comic relief because
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I wasn't in there long enough. But most of the
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: pictures that I do get cast, and that's that's what
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I'm there. I'm gonna just tell you this. I wasn't
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: in the movie. There's a whole lot of people went
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: in there for one second and the star is born.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Lu Nell. Okay, you were in the movie. Okay, and
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: and and got a credit in the movie. And I
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: guess I saw you in the movie because I saw
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: the movie three times. I wanted to. I see the
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: beginning of it, that I see the middle, that I
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: catched the end, and then I come back and see
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: the whole movie and go, wow, I missed that, Paul.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: So I saw you in the movie. And so I
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: always tell me one thing I always knew about you,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: even though you never spoke to me. You never saw me.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I saw a humble person. Did I Did I misread you? No,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you didn't misread me. Um. And I think that one
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: of the only reasons that we really never spoke to
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: found it because whenever I saw you, most of the time,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: you were so immersed in the Steve or you know,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: the kings of comedy you know, and and I would
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: be backstage and you know, it ain't like listen, it
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: ain't like ste you didn't talk to me either. It
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: wasn't like you know, you ignored me. But there was
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: just so much around them at the moment that there
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: wasn't time for us to click. I I know that, Um,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you know, it's easiest for me to be in the
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: comedy zone. I know that I can do dramatic acting
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: because like I said, I did theater before I ever
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: did um anything else. Yes, but my my, uh, you know,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: A Star is Born, I was into Academy Award nominated films.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: A Star is Born was nominated for the Academy Award.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I was able to go to the Golden Growth. I
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: was able to go to the Stackward and so was Borat.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: You know, people forget about to us about that because
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: that's really was your big moment, right well yeah, but
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: black black people didn't latch on the boat and still
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: have not the subside, but most didn't. That was like
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: a big thing. You know. That got me a lot
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: of attention in Europe and stuff like that because Sasha
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: being from you know, uh London, me belie. Um, you know,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I was really big with the whole Ali g thing
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and everything like that. Cluss On the same time that
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: boor I came out, I was on tour with Catt Williams.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: So it's like I had a black audience that I
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: had this white one, and then I'm just saying that
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: was about doing bor At was that six months after
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: the film came out, I was under guig order. I
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: couldn't tell nobody that I wasn't the Protestant too, because
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I would reach my contract and here in l A,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: you could be talking to anybody in the bar and
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: you say like that, what you don't know is they
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: worked for the movie company or they sleeping when somebody
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: worked when we would company and the kill and then
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: you know you're in trouble. So for six months when
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: I went out, there was people who see me in
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: the bar to be like and you right, that's amazing.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: I also didn't get to do any of the promotional stuff.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Sasha and Kim Davidian who played Azamat, they got to
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: go on you know, Jay Lenod, they got to go
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I'm there, They got to go on back and talk
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: about the movie, and I didn't get to do any
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: of that stuff. So I could have been that had
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: my quote unquote tifany had this moment. But I get
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: I got shut down a couple of times. Last year, Uh,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: the great movie came out called Dolan Is My Name,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: starring my man Eddie Murphy. Uh. It's kind of interesting
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: because I'm a former stand up comedian, so Dolomite had
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: an impact on me, and so so watching that movie
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: is almost kind of like watching a bit of my
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: life because I know where I met Dolomite. I performed
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: with Dolomite, and so he had a place in my
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: heart and and I got to grow, and then I
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: got to see you Lunelle performing a very very funny character, uh,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: opposite Eddie Murphy and hold your own when you go.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy's kind of like the Michael Jordan's stand up
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: comedy to me. Okay, so when you're sharing the screen
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: with somebody like Eddie Murphy, do you what are your
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: thoughts when you when you get catching a role like that?
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Do you are you nervous? Do you feel you have
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: to step off? Do you do you what? What? What
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: are your thoughts? Right there? Lou Nell, Well, I must
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: say that had I not already had a relationship with Eddie.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: It would have been a total mind mind. You know
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: what I'm saying, because he is the goat. Like for me,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: there's Richard and there's Eddie in that order, and then
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: there's everybody up. Um. I knew Eddie socially. I had
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: been the parties with Eddie and stuff like that. And
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Eddie knew me because I was very good friends with Charlie,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Charlie Rest in Peace, Charlie Back, Charlie and I made
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: movie together. Charlie and I did projects together. Charlie and I,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: you know, would kick it together. I went to go
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: see him during the Black and Brown comedy get down
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: with him and l and Jeorge Lopez and and um.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: You know, so Eddie knew knew me like for years.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: And I even have pictures here in the house with
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: me and Eddie and all of that. Also, I knew
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Rudy as well. I just was had in my hand
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the Rudy Raymore Dolomite bobble head that Rudy gave me.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Rudy gave your baba head. He gave me a backscratcher.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: He gave me some albums that were rated five X,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: like not triple eggs like five X and he gave
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: me his whole video collection Pete which saw The Devil
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: Sun Law and Dolomite is my name, I mean Dolomite
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: and um, you know the like three others. So one
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: of the things I knew for a fact is that
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Rudy did not want to be forgotten, you know. And
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: what my agent came to me and was like, I
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: got an audition for you to day and the movie
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: is called Dolomite, it's my name. And I said, Dolomite
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: making a movie about do mate? Is this for real?
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: Y sering? And they were like that and um. Then
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: they told me that it started Eddie Murphy and I
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: was like, get out of here. I know I'm not
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: gonna get to work with Eddie. Like come on, y'all
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: just jerking my chain. You must just have people you
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: want to audition and you just need to you know,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: the room, just running them through the room. They know
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: what they got they want right right right. So I
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: went to the audition and actually the audition that the
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: part I was on Disney for was a part of
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Lady Read, not the part that I yet our audition
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: for that role, and I had seven callbacks. We even
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: did a screen test with the wig and with the
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: outfit and everything like that. As it turns out, the
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: role went to the vine Joy hand out, which is fine.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: I think she did a fine job and I like her. Yes,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: she's an old theater actress. That's why nobody knows who
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: she is because theater is great. But you can You
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: can do a chose a week for ten years on
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: Broadway and do thirty minutes on television, and more people
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: will know you in that thirty minutes than will will
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: in the ten years you are Broadway. That's just a fact.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: So Davondo Aroundo is a theater actors. Then Craig Brewer,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: who had done Puzzle and Flow and did told them
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: that is my name and has directors coming to America
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: the quest. Craig liked me so much that he didn't
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: want to let me go, and and he saw my
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: dimensions and everything like that. Knew I could take direction
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: after auditions seven times, so he gave me the part
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: of Eddie's hands. So I was very very happy to
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: have that because I didn't have to share the room
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: with a bunch of cats. It was just Eddie and myself.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: Eddie and myself and I had a great time. And
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: fast forward to Craig Brewer is now doing Coming to
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: America and I didn't have to auditions for that cuign
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: so I'm very happy to be in too. Eddie Murphy
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: movies back to back and there's Coming to America's sequel
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: is gonna blow everybody's mind. I was just telling my
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: um Instagram live audience earlier that there's some fake flyers
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: going around about Coming to America. They had Tiffany Hattish
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: on them. Tiffany's not in the movie. They said it's
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: coming out August seven. It doesn't come out to December.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: They said it's Coming to America too. It's called Coming
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: to America the Quest. So there's fake flyers going around,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: don't believe that. But the sequel to Coming to America
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: is one of the most amazing films that I've ever
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: been on. The course we filmed on Tyler Perry's old
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: studio and the new studio, I got a tour of
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: a lot. I got to see the album stages. It
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: was so prideful and so amazing. Plus, when you're watching
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: Coming to America in the living room thirty years ago,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: you can't even fathom that there's gonna be a sequel
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: thirty years later and you'll be in it. That's why
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: when they say God can dream, dreams bigger. God got
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: bigger plans to you that you could ever dream, It's true,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: you know. And I was very um lucky to be
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: in this film along with the great John Amos and
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: with James of Jones, and you know, Vanessa Belle Callaway,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: and there's so many of the people that were in
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: it before. Mostly all the people that were here before
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: are in it this time. The only person who passed
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: away was a great Matt Sinclair who played Prince Ames
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: and mother. And then there's cameos and other roles by
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: other people that I can't say, giving me a hemorory
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: because I got the pictures in my phone that I
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: want to drop, and I've had almost a year now,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, I understand the gridges. I want
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: to just show someone. I can't do it, but it's
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: gonna be amazing. It's really, really, really a wonderful experience.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I'm blessed. One of the great things on Barack. You
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: couldn't promote, but you could promote. Dolomite is my name?
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: I'm watching Jimmy Kimmel because they were saw a promotion,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: said Lunelle, pre promoted that you was going to be
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: on the show. And when you came, when he introduced
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: you and you came out that beautiful dress, what ran
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: through your mind? Because you know, I've been I have
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: come out on stage, I've been introduced like that, never
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: at the level that you was introduced. Because you introduced
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: as a star on a major late night television successful show,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: talk walkers through those steps emotionally. Um uh. And when
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: you sat down and did the interview in the crowd
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: reacting to your lunell, well, you know I had also
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: prior to the interview on Kimmel, I had been lucky
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: enough to obtain a residency at his comedy club in
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Las Vegas. Absolutely some of the forgot a chance to
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: see me before the shutdown. Um I was at Jimmy
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: Kimmel's comedy club in Las Vegas every Sunday night at
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: ten o'clock. So we had been talking to them about
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: the fact that Yo, I'm Jimmy's resident, Like I'm here
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: every week. You know, most people would come in, they
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: may do a weekend, they may go somewhere or something
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: like that. But they I was there every Sunday, every
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Sunday at ten pm. So when it came through to
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: my agent said yeah, we're gonna be able. You know
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: you're gonna be able to do the show, I was
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: elated because I've always pictured myself kitting at the desk.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: You know, if it wasn't Carson, and I thought it'd
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: be the Winnow it wasn't Leno's, and I thought it'd
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: be a letterman. If it wasn't a letterman, I didn't
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: know what was gonna happen. But I did get a
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: chance to walk out there from behind the curtain in
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: the outfit that I was very proud to wear by
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: a black designer named Angela dene I was able to,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: you know, be my witty self. I didn't have to
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: do stand up. I just was able to sit there
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: and you know, be me, and um, it was great.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: You know, Jimmy's very kind, He's a very kind person,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: and um, he was very into me. He makes you
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: feel very important, you know. I was low key flirting
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: like I always do. Very cute at it, very cute
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: at it, showing those nails, showing those nails, yeah, all
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: that stuff. So it was it was a wonderful, wonderful experience,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: and I'm glad that I have the tape. You know
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: that my daughter was there with me. I had, uh
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: my crew that day was my agent, my manager, my stylast,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: my daughter, and um Glodine White, the late very White White,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: she's not very dear friend. So she was backstage where
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: her sister Lindau and um, yeah, and a couple of
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: more people that I loved. And so I did have
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: a crew, and it was it was great. You know,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: we celebrated after we went to Yamaha Olds back when
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: you could find dying and stuff like that, and and uh,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: it was you know, it was a dream come true,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you know, and that's why that's why I was excited
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: about it. You know, when you when you came out there,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: so people standing for you, assuming there might have been
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: some of your crew members said good your daddy, your daddy,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: your dad, and then you're sitting down like a star
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: like you you belong there. You belong there. And I
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: noticed and I'm not this is not the end of
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: your journey. It's the start of an even bigger journey.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: How are you dealing with this pandemic. Now, my friend,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: before we get out of here, I was made for quarantine.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Trust me, I haven't. I haven't had three, you know,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: almost three months to get anywhere. And the thirty years
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: that I've been doing stand up and I haven't even
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: had this much time to lay around at home with
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: my husband because I was always working. From the time
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: that you know, I started doing the stand up in
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: Long Beach and they went back to Oakland, where I'm from,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: and was working on the Soul be Television Network, and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: then came back out to l A and get more
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: to stand up, and went on tour with Captain, started
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: my own tour and got the rid of that. We
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: don't get ninety days, ninety days to lay at home.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: It's not like I'm laying on the beaches of Tahiti.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: You know, I'm at home. And uh, you know, we've
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: gotten real creative. I started my YouTube show. For anybody
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: out there who's interested in YouTube or has my Instagram
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: me to click the link in the bio. It's called

- 1:32:49Speaker 1: l L. It comes on live every Wednesday from three
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: to four Pacific time. And um, so you know, you
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: get creative when you're at the house and I'm and
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: cooking and doing the mommy thing and doing the white thing.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: I taught my husband the other day, I said, I
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: will be going back to one, so enjoy it us.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: Why you can't do them movie style? While I love it.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: She is the original bad girl of comedy. You've seen it, Dolderney,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: You've seen him. She is a queen to me. I've
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: I've seen it from a far and it's great talking
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: to you, little Nell and your resume. Now, when when
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: when coming to America? Come back out in the fall.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: Can I get you back on the show? Oh you
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: will want to, Yes, absolutely, And then I'll tell you
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: some of the back story about some stulfcause we have
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: some real, real, real um memorable memorable times. I'm gonna
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: bring you back. Thank you for doing my show, and
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: I know that I consider your blessing. I consider you
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: a gift and I and a hard worker, and that's
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: why I wanted to bring you on my show. Money

- 1:34:01Speaker 1: one thing you have to do is keep working hard
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: and stay focused. And if you the blessings will happen
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: based on how much you're willing to put in to
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: the thing that you call your dream. Thank you, thank
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: thank you, h thanks that. I hope, I hope, but
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: listen gets say, well, you know, talk for them back.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: I will do that. What grows in the forest trees?

- 1:35:53Speaker 1: on the phone. Kicked off his career portraying n y
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: p D Blue Detective Baldwin Jones on the ABC police

- 1:36:01Speaker 1: two thousand five. His other television credits include Raven Wood, Reckless,
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: Common Law, Let's Stay Together, Raising the Bar, c I
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: S Miami and The Cleaner, and films like No Good Deed,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: mcdilla's Family Reunion. Now I'm a fanatic. Just let everybody
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: know about Marvel Cinema Universe, so lately I've been able
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: to see him play the role of Agent Alfonso Matt
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: McKenzie on ABC's Marvel's Agents of Shields. Please welcome to
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: money making Conversations, my man, Henry Simmons. Hey, thank you,
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: Thank you, Henry. First of all, you know I saw
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: the premier so and I know the series. So I
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: saw the premier, so we can talk about that. We
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: want to talk about that, but I want to just
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: talk about your career a little bit here. First of all,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: how much time do you do you stay keep standing
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: in shape? Because you're in shape last now, I saw
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: you on the premiere and you're looking good, my man.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: The arms they let you show the arms off some
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: the guns. So how much time you in the gym? Man?
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: I just wanted because I know I don't look like that.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: I don't. I can't look Someone was next, and I
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: know you're working on that. I know some of this
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: God gave it to you, but you're keeping it in shape.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: How's that working out for you? Let me tell you something.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: It's it's it's hard work. I'm not gonna lie to you,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: you know, especially for this role right here. I uh,
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I worked out more I was working on six days
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: a week, and I didn't take any shortcuts like you know,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: some of these actors out here doing uh these synthetic drugs.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Don't do that stuff. It's all hard work, um, But
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: I tell you it's hard because you get up at
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: you know, five o'clock in the morning, you start working
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: six o'clock, you get done at eight, you get home
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: at nine, nine thirty, you spend time with your family.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: It's about thirty eleven o'clock. That's when I would start
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: working out. Start working out eleven o'clock at night, get
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: about twelve twelve thirty, study for the next day, go
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: to sleep, and get ready to do it all again.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Because that's your that's your career, that's your brand, that's
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: your look. So you can't show up for an audition
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: with a pot ballet. That's that's not no, not right now.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: Even if I wasn't uh an actor, I would never
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: look that happen. I couldn't do it. I could do it,
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: could do it because that's part of your brand. And
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I always tell people that you know your brand, your model.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: People have a certain expectation. They see a headshot, that
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: see your body of work. When you come in for
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: an audition or they give your role because sometimes you're
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: blessed like that because they've seen your body of work
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: when you walk through that door. That's what they're expecting,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: that that commitment, that same effort, that same consistency. How
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: has it been when you you your estimation, we're looking
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: at your career and you have a great body of work.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: What has been the difficulties of maintaining that consistency of
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: getting the opportunity to stay in front of the person
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: who does the decision makers of Hollywood, the casting directors. Well,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: you know, here's the thing. Uh, I'm old school. I'm
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: gonna tell you right now. I'm old school. And the
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: way I approached my uh career, now that that's good
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and bad. Right. A lot of funds a lot of
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: people nowadays social media day involved their personalized the families media.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: They're showing so many, so many aspects of their lives
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: and that gives them so many followers, and that does
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: help them, uh to some degree in terms of getting jobs. Now,
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: those aren't THEO jobs I want. If if someone if
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: the casting director, if a directors looking at my social
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: media account and seeing, oh he's popular, therefore, I'm going
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: to give him a job that's not the job. I
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: want a job that is based on artistry. And so therefore,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: and I'm a person I believe in privacy. I believe
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: in the old school way of having not not showing,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: Like if you go to my um uh Instagram account,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: you won't see pictures of my kids and pictures house
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: and you know all stuff and and uh. And also
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: I try to do things with integrity. Thank you. And
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: that's what I started. I said, are two things that
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: I want in this business. I want longevity obviously, because
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: longevity is equivalent to success. Uh. It's longevity and integrity.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: I don't want to start doing things just to be
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: doing them, and when I look back on it, I
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: question why I did it or humiliated by it. I
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: don't want that. But to tell you, when you operate
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: with integrity, that means your journey, your journey is going
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: to have a little bit more ups and downs are
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit longer on the road. You're
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: not taking everything that's you're throwing at you right right,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: you know, and I believe that, you know, I've looked
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: at this. Relationships are key to and that then then
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: the integrity comes with that. If you have integrity, you're
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: gonna have relationships. And if you have relationships, when people
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: need you, they know your body of work. And that's
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: how you're saying, you said rashand look, you can have
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: the followers, but if you don't have the body of
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: the work, that can bite you in the butt, because
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: when you get on that set, you know, and you
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: and sometimes you're challenged by talent, terrific talent, you know,
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: because and sometimes you're not the biggest star on the set.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Sometimes you're in a great ensemble and you have to assemble,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: which is kind of like what you have to deal
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: with with Marvel's Ages of Shells. That's a great ensemble
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: that you have to deal with and you have to
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: mess your talent inside of them, and everything feels relatable, organic,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: And that's why, you know, just watching on that series,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: it's been a blessing to me because you're a black superhero.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: And I'm gonna just telling you know, and people need
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: to understand that why Black Panther was so popular, because
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: you know, we all need to feel that we in
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: that in that fantasy world that we are part of
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: that part of the equation. And I'm gonna tell you so, man.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: You know, I know you were on the second season,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: you were like a recurring character. And when they made you,
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: i think the third season, when they made you a regular,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I smiled, Henry, I smiled, brother, thank you, thank you
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: so much, thank you. You know you know I look,
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: I also I do how I think there's a responsibility
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: to my artistry, but I do also recognize as a
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: responsibility on being a black man in this business because
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: I know, I know, at least I'm trying to be
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: cognizant of what I represent. And I mean not only
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: to to other uh people of color, but also my
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: children and and also that's why I want to operate
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: and integrity. And you know, uh when when I hear
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: people say things like that ptasely about Marvels Agents of Shield,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: when they say, wow, they see this guy and he's inspiring,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: you know, because he's a black man. And I'm gonna
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: tell you like this, I was so surprised, number one,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: that what was surprised the fact that they made me
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: director right right right? You don't see particularly in that position.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: I I I wouldn't think that, uh, that they would
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: make a black man, the leader of that squad. I
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: thought it would be someone else, but volumes into the
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: writers and producers that I work with, right right, you know,
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: and that and that that's that's important because you know,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: first of all, you know, you're not just an ardiner.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: You're You're a big black man. And I say that
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: in a good way. When when you're walk in the room,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: you feel a room, you know, they go, wow, that
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: God looks good, he's in shape. Who is that guy
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: you you're here? Who is that guy type of person
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: who walks in the room? And that that's really good.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: But that's a responsibility that comes with that, and so
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: and so when I look at it with this now,
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: when I say that, when they when they made you
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: that recurring character, then they made you the regular and
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: made it legitimately a level of responsibility that I can
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: be engaged into this show because I see a part
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: of me, My kids see a part of me, My
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: friends see a part of me in that show that
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: looks like me. Because guess what, in the fantasy world,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: we are heroes too, and you are a hero. And
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: that's mentoring other people because you know, I grew up watching,
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: you know, buying the whole combined. Captain America and then
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: were my fantasies now. And that's a good fantasy to have,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: because that's a wish, that's a dream. And to see
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: a black man who looks, who looks statueous, who looks
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: in shape, who looks good, that's a blessing, man, And
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: that's a blessing for it not only for people of color,
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: but for white America to see you as well as
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: a leader, as a guy of thor that's important. Man.
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: I just wanted to live. That's why I was excited
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: about interviewing you today here because you know, a lot
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: of times, you know, as an actor, we get in
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: these vacuums and we just do the best job we
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: can do. But when you step out into my world,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: you know, the the you know, the the Golden Corral world,
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: the Kroger world of regular people just shopping the rafts,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: you know, that's that's the people that that look at
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: you and go, you go, why is he looking at me? Like? Wait?
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: Because guess what you are doing? You mean something to us, Henry,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: I want to go break up here. I don't know
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: what you're talking about. Yeah, I'm I'm a regular guy, though,
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: I'm a regular guy, but I appreciate that. Oh yeah,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: you know, I Faso Mac. Now, yeah, I'm taking something Faso.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: You know your character on the Sholf Now you know,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: because I I'm not shaped like you, but I got
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: a ball head and a beer to you know, kind
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: of keep it close up. So I would just let
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: you know. I I fade in that lane that you
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: live in. Okay, now, okay, Now, now you're the director,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: which like Nick Fury and the Marvel movies, he was
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: the director, So you're kind of like the Nick Fury
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: character on the television series Marvel's Agents of Shields. Because
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: my man Colson he's called he's like a robot this
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: season or something. He probably he was brought back from
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: the dead. Can you can you feel us in on
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: the details because I saw the premier and uh and
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: we'll talking about it. Yeah. He the thing is he
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: uh he died right and he was and then there
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: was another character at last season, season six at quite
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: a bit like him, and I guess he was infused
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: with in another dimension he were a person. Uh, but
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: when he died. Um, there's these androids called chronic comms
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: and uh, Simmons the Simmons character was able to infuse
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: all of Colson's stocks and feelings and memories everything into
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: this chronic Colm. So she created Coulson in a way,
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: although he is an android, he is like Colson in
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: in the way he thinks and moves and fields. So
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: that's the way they were. The writers were brilliant and
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: being able to bring him back that way. Um uh
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: so now he's back, and he his position is different
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: because he's an agent. And also he's different because he
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: has this, uh, he has strength. He's kind of as
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: a superhero now right right, like like Quake. Quake really
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: has the big power out there because she'd throw people.
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: You know, you come close to her, you know, she
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: can just blast your way. But but but but now
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: he has this an amazing strength. He can move real
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: quick and so so it's really ironic because you know,
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: you know, he he was first introducing too the Marvel
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: series in the movie Thor and of course we all
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: saw him die in the Avenger movies and then he
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: somehow brought back to life for the television series, which
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: was a great gift for us. So him dying in
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: front of us, we're kind of used to him dying
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: and coming back, Harry, that wasn't a stressed you know what.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: It wasn't a stretched though. Oh he's back. Okay, come okay,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: come okay, come okay, okay. Well let's let's get this
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: little brain transfer straight, the situation straight. So we're gonna
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: get on with the show because Carson cannot die. He's
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: the vampire of this way. If he could keep coming back,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: they could resurrect Captain America. Uh but all right, man,
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: everybody can get young again, okay if Coles keep coming back,
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: because yeah, never had the superpower. So tell us about
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: your character. You know, we talked about you being the director,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: but tell about tell us about the hold of you know,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: because your characters has had certain levels of evolution in
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: this series and different roles and different leaps and different
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: transitions different models. Talk about it when he was introduced
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: into the show, and bring us forward. Okay, sure, Well,
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: initially I went on just a simple audition and uh,
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: you know, about two weeks later they asked me to
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: come aboard and I'm sure. But the problem was, at
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: the time the first season was not on Netflix. I
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: didn't have I didn't I didn't know what I was
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: stepping into I mean I had an idea because I
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: had seen a little bit of the show, but I
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: didn't I didn't know my first day there, it was
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: just it was everything I thought it would be and more.
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: I mean there were if the technology you walk on set,
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: there's there's still were like twenty people at the time.
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: Uh all this this weapon read the names of all
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: these guns, that the aircraft and and uh all the
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: technical language and the levels this all that, and it
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: was a whole new world. I knew right away that
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: this is what I want to be a part of. Yeah,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: I'm telling you. Uh, here's the thing. My first season,
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: I was recurring, and I was advised not to do
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: it because people people were like, you know, don't don't
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: do that. You know, don't don't recur to the whole
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: season because then they can drop you at the end.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: But here's my thing. I know, once I get in,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: I believe in my talent. I know how hard I work,
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: and I bet on me and I bet on God.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: So yeah, that's that's my number one. Uh So I knew.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: I said, no, No, I'm not worried about I know
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna recur. I'm gonna recur and I know they're
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: gonna there's no doubt in my mind. And that's what happened,
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: and then they helped me to uh series regular. But
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: the trend the way Mac came about. Initially, I don't
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: know if you remember, he was so reluctant to fight.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: He didn't want to fight the man of people. Yeah,
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: there was no way in the world he was gonna fight.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: And he Colston said, look, I need you to get
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: out there. So finally he got out there, and and
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: he was doing everything he could to maintain the fight
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: but not kill anyone and just do what would need
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: to be done. A matter of fact, he tried to
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: leave in the first I'm not cut out for this
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: um But as things progressed, there were times that Colson
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: had to leave. Like I think there was one time
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: when he had the cree blood in him and he
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: needed to explore that. And and the one thing I
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: liked is that right off the bat they had um
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: my character Mac, but in Headsworth Colson, because Colston was
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: using Shields for his own, uh, his own needs instead
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: of using it for the greater good, and Mac was
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: against that. And Mac was right, He's like, look you
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: can't be using it to find out all about this creed.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: But this is about saving the world. This is about
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: doing it the bigger picture, not just the A picture.
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: And he was I was the one that was vocal
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: against Colson. I like that, but we had mutual respect
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: and you noticed when Colston would me, he would put
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: me in charge. So eventually you know, I was out
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: in the field. They gave me the shotgun acts and
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: the fighting and all that. So when we get down
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: to UH season I think it was five and the
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: five where they decide who's going to be the director
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: after Colson dies, I thought for sure it was gonna
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: be either Quake or there wasn't in the comics, or
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: May uh May. And when they gave me the mantle,
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: I was UH. I was extremely flattered. I'm not gonna lie,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: extremely flatter because it says two things. It says something
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: about me personally write an actor. They know that I
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: have the authority the UH, the characteristics of leadership and integrity,
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: thank you, and as an actor the strength to carry
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: that mantel and leave. And as a as the character
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: of Mac they see through his progression that he has UH,
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: that I've infused him with those qualities as well. Absolutely,
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: and and they believed in me. And that's that was
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: something that meant. It meant so much for me. I
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: just I'm not a line. Well, I guess what meant
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: something to me too, Okay, mental to a lot of
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: people out there of color, to see you an authority,
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: an authority figure. When Nick Ferry comes on the screen
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: and Ardor and the Avengers around, I feel good, order
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: in Spider manner. I feel good because you go wow,
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: because we all know that could have been a white character. Okay,
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: it could have been a white character. So but they
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: made a decision that based on your talents, color didn't matter.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: You're the load. Yeah, it didn't didn't it didn't matter.
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: And because now this is why we're gonna go to
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: the series. Now this is the final mission. Okay, watching
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: the premiere episode last night, you guys are transported back
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: to nineteen thirty one. Now, this is why this is
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: important to me. First of all, you were wearing a
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: fly suit. Okay, I just want to let you know
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: that brother wanted that you know, you were you were
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: looking at you were wearing something I definitely were put
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: on because I'm a Taylor made guy him er. You know,
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: I'm just let you know. That's you know you didn't
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: you didn't let me get to the hat. Come on, now,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: this food Look at this fool got this hack coctor
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: the side a brother one. You're gonna fo here every week.
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna get on your about that hat. I can't
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: believe this food got these brown shoes on. Okay, signed
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: up walking down here with these white folks with his
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: hat cocked to the side and the one you know
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: that can't happen, right, We're gonna do We're gonna do it.
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: Oh my god, Oh my god. Because you know, it
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: was really interesting because of the fact that this is
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: where it gets interesting, because of the fact that it's
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: one and we know the racial situation. It's thirty one,
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: We know how women were treated in ninety one, and
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: here you are a man of authority, the boss of
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: these white people. Because we gotta talk like this, because
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: because I think that had to be thought out when
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: that time period was picked. They did, do know, talk
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: us through that whole process, because you knew that time
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: period that you couldn't walk around just giving them orders
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: out in public because that would draw attention. And also
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: when people came to you negative because I've seen in
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: the in the premier where somebody came to you negative
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: because negative because you were a person of color. You
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: react and you go, oh, don't make no ripples, don't
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: don't make no ripples. You know. I think that was
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: really and then uh, I think Chloe's character, you know,
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: when she was walking into the bar area. Uh, that
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: that that that just got treated like she was a
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: stupid female in his eyes, you know, while you're at home,
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: you know, taking care of babies, and she reacted to that.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: I think that is so clever because of the fact
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: that it allows us to see, you know, how how
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: how time has changed, but if you go back to
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: that time, it's still the same. But you guys got
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: to play out your roles and the characters that we
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: believe that you are in a period that's not conducive
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: to that particular particular the uh social economical social stylings
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: talk to us about that. When the script was being
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: put in front of you guys, how what did y'all
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: think about it? Did you have any questions when you
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: are developing that period of ninety one? Well, that was
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: my first question. That was my first question about race,
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: because uh, look, you know you you can't deny that
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: I'm a six foot four, two time black man walking
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: down the street. You can't deny it. And the thing
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: is that I said to them, Now, I don't know
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: what they had in motion, but I asked him, I said,
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: what what how are you going to address the And
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: one of the executives said, oh, we might say something
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: where uh where someone says, oh, you know, hey, you
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: gotta walk through the back or something like that. And
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: and again I don't know how much further they were
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: gonna go, but I mean when we first, when they
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: first started talking about I said, listen, I would like
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: you to address that. I would like you to address
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: it more than just something like that, because it wasn't
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: something that one person might itself. Everybody felt a certain
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: way about uh, black people. Everybody that was what a
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: certain way about black people during the time. I mean,
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: you know, uh, I'm not saying that body was racist,
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: but I'm saying that some things were acceptable and some
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: things were not. A black man walking amongst white people
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: and giving orders and walking in and walking with us
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: in his authority and in his power was not accepted
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: now as a character. There's no way I was going
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: to back down from that. There's no way I was
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: going to I'm not gonna walk into a situation. And
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: because now, look, if it was a different time period,
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: if I was playing a movie where I was born
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: that time and it not not, it might be different.
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: But because I'm a man of this age going back
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: in time, I'm going to keep the authority in the
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: power in which I walk in because I'm not diminishing
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: the story. What I'm saying, Well, that's why I loved it.
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: That's why I thought, you know, and looking at the
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: thirty one soon as they said that time for you
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: and I read that, I said, Wow, this is gonna
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: be interested in watching your character because you're not gonna
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: become five for seven okay, and you know you're still
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: gotta be six ft four. That's why you caught that
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: hat and with stride, because when you're walk in the room,
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: like I said, when you're walking the room, even today,
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: you are a room changer because of how you look
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: and your physicality. And so one you walk into that bar,
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: immediately everybody looked at you. Okay, you know, because they're going, okay,
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: we got them being in here wise that big black
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: dude in here, and who let him in? You know,
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: and and and that's just that's just to me. It's
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: fine with me because that storytelling. But the storytelling that
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: we could not have is that you bowing down or
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: you being talked too badly and not reacting to it.
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: That is what I appreciated about last night. And thank you. Yeah,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: and the same years. If you notice each time someone
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: like one guy, I think he said shadow and the
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: implication me was racial. Now you know, it might have
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: been something different, but the implication for me was racial.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: And in the bar when the guy started, uh, he
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: started to call me a racial derogatory word and and
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: and yeah, I said, I stepped to him both. I said,
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: what do you say? You know? Yes, you know nothing.
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: I preached that I'm not you know, look, I'm you know,
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: I'm not gonna blow my cover. But the thing is
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: is that a man in this age and this this
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: this latent time, uh has a certain sense can walk
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: in his authority, can walk in his power. And and
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: that's something that is ingrained in us. So that was
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: a re actionary thing for mac back Man when he
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: was he was in the third it was beautiful. It
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: was beautiful, you know, I just wanted to everybody know
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: it's a great series premier and but I thought that,
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: But that's an underlying tone, especially how women were treated
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: in the thirty one and how people of color when
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: treated in nineteen thirty one is going to be played
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: out through the period while they're standing down. And I
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: think it's really cool because the writers heated your thoughts
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: and and a lot of respect, because you can't do
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: a great series and you can't send little underlying messages
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: that respect is always the bottom of bottom line we're
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: all trying to achieve. And in this final mission, which
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: is the seventh season of Marvels Agents of Shields, it's
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: really especial because of the fact that you're the director.
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: Women have power, women are fighters, women are not subservient,
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: and they're on a mission to save the world. Tell
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: us about this this final mission and let us know
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: the direction and what can we expect the season. Henry, Well,
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: you can expect us too. I think it's already been
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: told that we are we don't remain in this time
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: we go to different time period. Absolutely, I think that's
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: already been said. So I'm not giving anything um. And
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: the the one thing I could say is that, uh,
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: the mission, I'm trying to say something without giving away
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: the wishing the mission. It becomes more complicated because, as
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: you know, if you go back in time, it's a
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: butterfly effect. If you do something, it changes the future.
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: And then maybe if you change the future, then maybe
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: you have to go back to another time to try
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: to impress something so it doesn't happen in the present time.
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: So it's it's a thing where and where you were
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: trying to trying to put out fires and trying to
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: do what's necessary, uh to stop these chronic colms from
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: taking over. But but the thing is is um, like
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: I said, along the way, you just have to read.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: You know, there's gonna be some things where it's gonna
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: affect people's lives and look and look like this. Because
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: we're moving through time, right there are other people that
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: are gonna come that could possibly come back that we've
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: seen before. That's awesome. That's Henry. I don't want to
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: hold you any longer, man, I just want to I
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: just want to have an honest conversation with somebody I respect,
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: a person I consider a mentor. For a lot of
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: young people of all colors in this country, but more
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: importantly in the in the era that we live today.
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: You know, we all need to look up and see
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: somebody that's doing something different and doing the impossible. And
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: you do it. Every Wednesday at ten pm Eastern and
