- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 2, we see Jesus
- 0:45perform his first miracle at a wedding taking place in a town
- 0:48in Galilee called Cana. Jesus turns water into wine.
- 0:52Let me recap it for you, but make sure you've read it for
- 0:55yourself first. So Jesus and his disciples are
- 0:58invited to this wedding in Cana, and Jesus mother Mary is also
- 1:01there. At a certain point in the
- 1:03festivities, the wine runs out. I'm not sure we quite have a
- 1:06grasp in our western way of thinking of how bad this is.
- 1:10This is a really big deal in this culture.
- 1:12This would have placed a lot of shame on the host, as though
- 1:15they were not able to provide, not able to handle the expense
- 1:18and provision of a proper celebration.
- 1:20Well, Mary doesn't want to see them put to shame, so she tells
- 1:24Jesus that the wine has run out and soon Mary is telling the
- 1:28servants to do whatever it is that Jesus tells them to do.
- 1:31Jesus tells the servants to take the six stone water pots that
- 1:34were used for ceremonial purification and fill them to
- 1:37the brim with water. Now each of these pots could
- 1:40hold between 20 and 30 gallons, so All in all we're talking
- 1:43about between 120 and 180 gallons of water.
- 1:47After the pots are filled with water, Jesus tells the servants
- 1:50to present them to the head waiter.
- 1:52The servants obey, and when the head waiter tastes the contents
- 1:55of these pots, the water has been turned to wine.
- 1:58Jesus first recorded miracle. But the story doesn't stop
- 2:01there. The head waiter, who does not
- 2:04know where the wine came from, calls the bridegroom over and
- 2:07says this to him. He says every man serves the
- 2:10good wine 1st, and when the people have drunk freely, then
- 2:13he serves the poorer wine. But you have kept the good wine
- 2:16until now. Catch that the water that Jesus
- 2:20turned into wine is better than the wine that was originally
- 2:23served at the wedding. Now I think there are a couple
- 2:26of things at play here. 1st, and you can't miss this, Jesus power
- 2:30is absolutely unmatched. This is the God man.
- 2:32There is nothing too difficult for him.
- 2:35To use the language of Mark Chapter 7, Jesus does all things
- 2:38well, but I think there's something that goes beyond the
- 2:41obvious reality that Jesus is powerful.
- 2:44Think about the symbolism at work here.
- 2:46Jars used for purification. New wine that's better than the
- 2:50old wine. Often when wine is used as a
- 2:52symbol in the New Testament, it's in the place of blood.
- 2:55For example, when we as believers partake in the Lord's
- 2:57Supper, we drink wine or grape juice to symbolize the blood of
- 3:01Christ poured out for us. So carry the metaphor out.
- 3:05The wine that Jesus provides is better than the wine that had
- 3:09previously been provided. The blood of Christ, the blood
- 3:13of the New Covenant, the blood that the perfect Lamb of God
- 3:16would pour out on the cross, is better than the blood that had
- 3:20been used all throughout the Old Testament, the blood of animals
- 3:23sacrificed to cover the sins of the people.
- 3:26Listen to Hebrews 10 verses one through 4.
- 3:28It says, for the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good
- 3:32things to come, and not the very form of things, can never by the
- 3:36same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make
- 3:39perfect those who draw near. Otherwise would they not have
- 3:43ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, having once
- 3:45been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins.
- 3:49But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year,
- 3:53for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take
- 3:56away sins. In other words, the blood of
- 3:58these bulls and goats was pointing to the blood of the
- 4:01perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ. And it is only by His blood that
- 4:06the people of God can once and for all be purified, washed
- 4:10clean and made right before God. And here at the wedding feast in
- 4:13Cana, Jesus is tipping his hand as to what is to come.
- 4:17To quote John the Baptist from just one chapter before this
- 4:20one. Behold the Lamb of God who takes
- 4:22away the sin of the world. Have your sins been taken away
- 4:26by the perfect Lamb of God? Have you been washed by the
- 4:29blood that was shed once for all by Jesus?
- 4:33If you haven't, let today be the day, and if you have, rejoice in
- 4:39the salvation and new life that He has given you by His blood.
