- 1:32Speaker 1: Class of is a production of I Heart Radio. Class
- 1:44Speaker 1: of Parents, faculty, rising graduates. Welcome to commencement. You made it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: This year is a little different, a difficult time to
- 1:55Speaker 1: graduate because the traditional graduation day has been put on hold.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So we're bringing it to you wherever you are, because
- 2:02Speaker 1: this is still your day, your moment, and now put
- 2:06Speaker 1: your hands together. It's time to be inspired. This year's
- 2:09Speaker 1: commencement speaker, the one and only Ryan Seacrest. Hello to
- 2:23Speaker 1: the graduating class of It is Ryan Seacrest. Here. The
- 2:27Speaker 1: time has arrived your commencement from school. There's no doubt
- 2:31Speaker 1: that this is not playing out as you envisioned, nor
- 2:34Speaker 1: how anyone else envisioned it for you. But that does
- 2:37Speaker 1: not in any way take away from everything you've accomplished.
- 2:40Speaker 1: If anything, it further demonstrates your resiliency and your ability
- 2:44Speaker 1: to handle whatever the future may hold. We may be
- 2:48Speaker 1: living in a time of uncertainty, but the one thing
- 2:50Speaker 1: that is certain is that you should all be very
- 2:52Speaker 1: proud of what you've accomplished. I want to share our
- 2:55Speaker 1: favorite quote of mine for you. It's from the poet
- 2:57Speaker 1: John Chiardi, and it goes like this, the day will
- 3:00Speaker 1: happen whether or not you get up. Let me say
- 3:03Speaker 1: it again, the day will happen whether or not you
- 3:06Speaker 1: get up. Now, it's not a reprimand for those who
- 3:09Speaker 1: are late risers. In fact, virtual commencement seemed taylor fit
- 3:13Speaker 1: for those that are. Instead, I take Charity's wisdom as
- 3:16Speaker 1: a wake up call to make sure you happen to
- 3:19Speaker 1: the day instead of letting it happen to you. Every
- 3:23Speaker 1: new day is a chance to get better, to be kinder,
- 3:27Speaker 1: or try something new. Each new day can also push
- 3:30Speaker 1: you to your limits, make you stumble, or reduce you
- 3:33Speaker 1: to tears. But no matter the circumstances, you still only
- 3:36Speaker 1: get one shot to make the day matter. Charity's words
- 3:40Speaker 1: remind us that life is precious, a truth that's currently
- 3:43Speaker 1: playing out right before our eyes. Days come and go fast,
- 3:48Speaker 1: before you know it, time starts to add up. And
- 3:50Speaker 1: then the older I get, the more I realize that
- 3:52Speaker 1: life happens whether or not I get up. It is true.
- 3:56Speaker 1: The world can sometimes be a pretty messy place. The
- 3:59Speaker 1: news is flood with sad stories. Our politics can make
- 4:02Speaker 1: us feel disheartened. The view of the job market is overwhelming.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But know this, The world is also full of opportunities
- 4:10Speaker 1: to find your purpose, your inspiration, creativity, and what excites you.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And there are many more good people than bad. Maybe
- 4:20Speaker 1: you can tell them fairly optimistic. I like to try
- 4:22Speaker 1: and look at life like that. But much of that
- 4:24Speaker 1: optimism comes from growing up, being raised, and naturally the
- 4:27Speaker 1: rest comes from working hard to be true to myself.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Over time, I developed my own set of tools I
- 4:32Speaker 1: call him, to bring a positive energy to each new day. Today,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I thought I'd tell you what works for me. See
- 4:37Speaker 1: what you think. I call it my code. So here goes. First,
- 4:40Speaker 1: I try to live my passion. Some of you have
- 4:42Speaker 1: always known what you were born to do. Others are
- 4:45Speaker 1: still trying to figure that out, and that's okay. I
- 4:48Speaker 1: was once an uncomfortable kid in husky jeans, so I
- 4:51Speaker 1: can remember that. To be honest, I didn't feel like
- 4:53Speaker 1: I fit into a lot of places. But one thing
- 4:56Speaker 1: I knew was I knew what my passion was. I
- 4:59Speaker 1: fell in love with radio. I told anyone who would
- 5:01Speaker 1: sit and listen that I wanted to be a broadcaster.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Played DJ my bedroom using an old twenty dollar radio
- 5:06Speaker 1: shack audio mixer. I put all my energy towards achieving
- 5:10Speaker 1: my goal. I started exercising, eating better, attempting to dress better.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Eventually I gained a little more confidence. But most important,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I realized it didn't matter what anyone else said about me.
- 5:19Speaker 1: What mattered was how I thought about myself and what
- 5:21Speaker 1: I believe I could accomplish only if I put everything
- 5:25Speaker 1: I had into it. The best path we can choose
- 5:27Speaker 1: for ourselves is one that allows us to follow our
- 5:29Speaker 1: hearts more than our heads. I also think you need
- 5:32Speaker 1: to trust your gut, even before I stepped my first
- 5:34Speaker 1: foot on the campus for my time in college. There
- 5:37Speaker 1: was a voice inside me telling me there was something
- 5:39Speaker 1: else I should be doing to pursue my passion for broadcasting.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Something tell me I needed to be in Hollywood to
- 5:45Speaker 1: make it happen. There wasn't a minute to waste. Many
- 5:48Speaker 1: of my professors, my closest friends and family, they weren't
- 5:51Speaker 1: so sure about the plan. I was nineteen years old
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I was literally scared to death. But at the
- 5:55Speaker 1: same time, I was never more sure of anything in
- 5:59Speaker 1: my life. And we try something new, you take a risk,
- 6:02Speaker 1: or you change your course. There will be naysayers, and
- 6:06Speaker 1: there will be well meaning skeptics too. You should thank them,
- 6:09Speaker 1: thank them for their advice. But whatever you do, do
- 6:11Speaker 1: not let them silence your intuition. Next, I try and listen.
- 6:16Speaker 1: A lot of people think that what this job is,
- 6:18Speaker 1: or broadcasting is, is talking for a living, but it's
- 6:20Speaker 1: not really true. It's listening for a living. When I'm
- 6:23Speaker 1: on the air talking to someone, I tell myself shut
- 6:26Speaker 1: up and listen to what the person is trying to say.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Instead of doing all the talking. I try and make
- 6:32Speaker 1: a point to listen, watch for the signals, wait for
- 6:34Speaker 1: the moment when you can help others be in the
- 6:36Speaker 1: spotlight and shine. It's a wonderful thing. Also in my code,
- 6:40Speaker 1: laugh loudly and preferably at yourself. Here's here's a joke.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I remember I was watching TV one night and it
- 6:47Speaker 1: cracked me up, and it was something like for the
- 6:49Speaker 1: fifth consecutive year, Ryan Seacrest took home the award for
- 6:52Speaker 1: Best Animated Short. That was a het joke. I can
- 6:55Speaker 1: think Jimmy Kimmelfur, and I happened to be watching television
- 6:58Speaker 1: when I saw it myself. So Kato, laugh at yourself.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Laughter keeps you saying, laugh hard and often. Next on
- 7:04Speaker 1: my code, I try to indulge my curiosity. Your college
- 7:08Speaker 1: degree is great evidence that you have learned a lot
- 7:10Speaker 1: over your years in school. It's a good start, but
- 7:13Speaker 1: learning never stops. There's no better example of that than
- 7:16Speaker 1: all the lessons we're learning as individuals about ourselves right
- 7:20Speaker 1: now and as a nation in the world. There's something
- 7:23Speaker 1: to be learned in everything. So follow your curiosity and
- 7:26Speaker 1: satisfy it. What makes you curious? Where do you want
- 7:28Speaker 1: to go when you can? What questions are you asking?
- 7:32Speaker 1: Never forget it's our curiosity that keeps us searching. Another
- 7:36Speaker 1: part of the code is be prepared. So a long
- 7:38Speaker 1: time ago someone figured out there were twenty four hours
- 7:41Speaker 1: in every day, but if you really really do it right,
- 7:44Speaker 1: there's a twenty The twenty hours the time you make
- 7:48Speaker 1: happen to get yourself prepared for what's next. It's when
- 7:52Speaker 1: you steal back moments in your day wherever you can
- 7:54Speaker 1: find them and use them to get ready for tomorrow.
- 7:57Speaker 1: The preparation skills that I learned back in school still
- 8:00Speaker 1: me today. I always have a highlighter with me, I
- 8:02Speaker 1: set the alarm on my phone and try not to
- 8:04Speaker 1: hit snooze, although it doesn't always happen that way. And
- 8:07Speaker 1: before any awards show, for example, I make flash cards
- 8:10Speaker 1: right with three facts about every person who I might
- 8:13Speaker 1: encounter their on the air. And it's not the flash
- 8:16Speaker 1: cards that made me ready. It's taken the time to
- 8:18Speaker 1: anticipate the moment that awaits me. You don't always have
- 8:22Speaker 1: to be the most talented person in the room, trust
- 8:24Speaker 1: me that I know, but you can be the most prepared.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Next up is controversial, but I I stick to it,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and that is be impatient. I am. I'm the annoying
- 8:34Speaker 1: friend who keeps texting when you don't get back. When
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm relaxing on Sunday night, I power through sixty minutes
- 8:39Speaker 1: and twenty five minutes, and I'm the guy who gets
- 8:42Speaker 1: annoyed how long it takes a website to reload. Sometimes
- 8:46Speaker 1: patience is for people who have time to waste. I
- 8:49Speaker 1: know not everybody agrees with that, and I know lately
- 8:52Speaker 1: it seems like we have all the time to waste
- 8:54Speaker 1: in the world. But even though things may have slowed
- 8:56Speaker 1: in some respects, dreaming continues, Planning continues because life continues.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's okay to be impatient, but also remember that it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: important to be kind and brave and hold the door,
- 9:08Speaker 1: look everyone in the eye, say thank you and mean
- 9:12Speaker 1: it when you say it. And that brings me to
- 9:14Speaker 1: giving back here. Giving back is a lot like compound interest.
- 9:18Speaker 1: To maximize the impact, be sure you start early. That
- 9:22Speaker 1: can mean donating a few bucks to the cause of
- 9:24Speaker 1: your choice, or making time to help an organization that's
- 9:27Speaker 1: trying to make a difference. Over the past decade, with
- 9:30Speaker 1: my parents, my sister, my family, we've helped build broadcast
- 9:33Speaker 1: studios media studios in children's hospitals, so kids and their
- 9:36Speaker 1: families can find an escape and interact with each other.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That's how I felt we could give back. Choosing how
- 9:45Speaker 1: to express gratitude is totally up to you, but it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: one of the most deeply personal choices you'll ever make.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It's an important one. Let's get that's the code. That
- 9:55Speaker 1: is my code. Hopefully you're inspired to create your own
- 9:57Speaker 1: code and then share your code. See where your friends
- 9:59Speaker 1: can offered. That sounds good to you. Sometimes being your
- 10:02Speaker 1: best self means being open to different ideas classes. This
- 10:07Speaker 1: is your time. Close your eyes, take a deep breath.
- 10:12Speaker 1: You'll always remember what you've learned and experienced during this time.
- 10:17Speaker 1: It will bind you to your classmates together forever. While
- 10:21Speaker 1: physical distancing may have changed today, it is you that
- 10:25Speaker 1: will change tomorrow. It's your time to rise. You are ready,
- 10:29Speaker 1: You have the tools you need. You are equal to
- 10:32Speaker 1: the challenges that lie ahead. Good luck. You can find
- 10:47Speaker 1: the collection of incredible commencement addresses from all your favorite
- 10:50Speaker 1: speakers at the Commencement Podcast on I Heart Radio or
- 10:53Speaker 1: wherever you listen to podcasts. Trot out of the
