- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. In John chapter 17, we are given
- 0:46what is widely known as Jesus High Priestly Prayer.
- 0:50This chapter takes place immediately before Judas betrays
- 0:52Jesus, literally. At the point that Jesus is
- 0:55praying this prayer in John 17, Judas is executing his plan to
- 1:00hand Jesus over to the Jewish religious leaders.
- 1:03So what is it that Jesus prays in the upper room with his
- 1:07disciples at this moment of pressure, at this moment when he
- 1:10knows his death is imminent? Jesus prays for his disciples.
- 1:15He advocates for them. He, as verse 9 says, makes
- 1:19requests to the Father on behalf of those whom you have given me,
- 1:22for they are yours. He prays that they would truly
- 1:25know God and know him. He prays, Father, the hour has
- 1:29come. Glorify your Son, that the Son
- 1:31may glorify you even as you gave Him authority over all flesh,
- 1:35that to all whom you have given him, He may give eternal life.
- 1:38This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God
- 1:42in Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
- 1:44He goes on to pray that the Father would keep them, that He
- 1:47would sustain and hold these followers and friends of Jesus.
- 1:51In particular, He asked that the Father would unify them, hold
- 1:55them, and hold them together. Listen to verse 11.
- 1:59I'm no longer in the world, and yet they themselves are in the
- 2:02world, and I come to you, Holy Father, keep them in your name,
- 2:06the name which you have given me, that they may be 1 even as
- 2:09we are. He prays that his joy, the joy
- 2:12that he experiences in the fellowship with God, would be
- 2:15made full in his disciples. Asking this in verse 13.
- 2:20But now I come to you, and these things I speak in the world, so
- 2:23that they may have my joy made full in themselves.
- 2:27Then he asked the Father to keep the disciples from the schemes
- 2:30of the enemy, echoing the Lord's Prayer.
- 2:33He asked that God would sanctify them in the truth, make them
- 2:35holy by the life changing power of the Word.
- 2:39Finally, he double s down on his request for unity, praying that
- 2:42the disciples would be one, that their unity would echo that of
- 2:46God Himself. Listen to verses 21 through 24.
- 2:49It says that they may all be 1. Even as you, Father, are in me,
- 2:53and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may
- 2:58believe that you sent me. The glory which you have given
- 3:01me, I've given to them that they may be one, just as we are one,
- 3:05I in them and you and me, that they may be perfected in unity,
- 3:08so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even
- 3:12as you have loved me. Father, I desire that they also,
- 3:15whom you have given me, be with me where I am, so that they may
- 3:19see my glory which you have given me.
- 3:22For you loved me before the foundation of the world.
- 3:25Here's the wild thing. Jesus isn't just praying for his
- 3:28disciples, He is praying for you and for me and for all who would
- 3:32follow him. In verse 20, he spells it out,
- 3:35saying I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also
- 3:38who believe in me through their word.
- 3:41And this is what Jesus does. Jesus is our advocate.
- 3:45He is even now, as Romans 8 tells us, at the right hand of
- 3:49the Father, interceding for us. He is working on your behalf.
- 3:54He is praying on your behalf because He cares for you.
- 3:59He desires your sanctification. He desires your joy.
- 4:03He desires that you would be guarded from the schemes of the
- 4:05evil. 1 He desires that you would know God.
- 4:09He desires that you would be unified with other believers.
- 4:11He desires that God would glorify himself in and through
- 4:15you. So take confidence in this.
- 4:17Find joy here. Jesus, your Savior and Lord, is
- 4:22also your advocate. He is interceding for you even
- 4:25now. Desire and pursue these things,
- 4:28sanctification, joy, unity, the glory of God that He is desiring
- 4:33and pursuing and praying for on your behalf.
