- 1:29Speaker 1: the non academic barriers to education. Please work with the
- 1:32Speaker 1: money making conversation, my man, Terrence Wheeler, thanks for having men.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Hey man, First of all, you know, um, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: we've been knowing each other years, hadn't seen each other
- 1:45Speaker 1: in years. But it's a blessing talk about absolutely man,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I'm talking about man. Uh, just a long history. And
- 1:53Speaker 1: you're one of the brothers man that inspired me, uh,
- 1:57Speaker 1: like I want to do for so many other young
- 1:58Speaker 1: brothers to not give up. How do you reinvent yourself
- 2:01Speaker 1: as a former athlete? When I see you, man, I
- 2:04Speaker 1: actually see God moving. I said, well, if he could
- 2:07Speaker 1: do it for Rashad, he could do it for me.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I just gotta stick with it and trust my purpose
- 2:12Speaker 1: and continue to walk in that purpose and never be
- 2:15Speaker 1: never be apologetic about my gifts by my success. Unusually
- 2:20Speaker 1: unwavering and committed. You're doing the best that I could
- 2:23Speaker 1: do each and every day, and you do a great
- 2:24Speaker 1: job at it, and that within the community. Because let's
- 2:27Speaker 1: talk about this. This year has had to spend the
- 2:30Speaker 1: most challenging year, I'm sure for all your child of
- 2:32Speaker 1: efforts to social arrest the COVID nineteen. So let's talk.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Let's move. We'll step back before you respond, why was
- 2:39Speaker 1: why is this mission of uplifting the community philanthropic activities
- 2:44Speaker 1: important to you and the Detroit community? Well, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: I was a child of poverty. Man. I grew up
- 2:49Speaker 1: like a lot of young brothers. Uh mother on drugs.
- 2:52Speaker 1: The father that was absolutely I spent a total of
- 2:54Speaker 1: four hours my entire life with my father, and three
- 2:57Speaker 1: of those who hours at his funeral. And so I
- 2:59Speaker 1: was just blessed to have a good grandfather or some
- 3:01Speaker 1: uncles and a hell of a basketball coach that really
- 3:04Speaker 1: gave me confidence and saw some ability in me. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: I said, Lord, if I'm ever in a position, I
- 3:09Speaker 1: want to use that position to help other people, other
- 3:12Speaker 1: children who think that they can't make it based on
- 3:14Speaker 1: one this situation. Because life is not about your conditions.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's your decision making that determines your au desctity. Use
- 3:20Speaker 1: some of those things in your community as motivating factors
- 3:23Speaker 1: for you can get out of there and come back
- 3:25Speaker 1: and save somebody else. And so my mother's drug use
- 3:28Speaker 1: made me want to become academically a stellar in terms
- 3:31Speaker 1: of academics, because I didn't want her to come into
- 3:33Speaker 1: the school for any reason of my behavior, of my brains,
- 3:36Speaker 1: because she was a drug ad. And I grew up
- 3:38Speaker 1: in the dope house man where we uh sold tall
- 3:41Speaker 1: ERDs values writtling method on all the way up to heroin.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And so I moved with my grandmother at the age
- 3:47Speaker 1: of twelve, uh and in thesid to turn around because
- 3:49Speaker 1: I had more of a stable home environment. Wasn't you
- 3:53Speaker 1: know our house is to get ready with my mother
- 3:54Speaker 1: and things that nature evictions. Uh. Sometimes you you're you're
- 3:58Speaker 1: home wing, you're homeless, so you're not thinking about homework,
- 4:00Speaker 1: you're thinking about survival. I wasn't. So I went to
- 4:03Speaker 1: my grandmother's house where I saw stability and my grandfather
- 4:07Speaker 1: just working hard to provive for his family. My grandmother
- 4:10Speaker 1: gave me a lot of tools in terms of social
- 4:12Speaker 1: skills and how to deal with people. Uh. And so
- 4:15Speaker 1: that's why I'm able to do things I'm doing today, man,
- 4:17Speaker 1: because my grandmother. Well when I met you, you know,
- 4:20Speaker 1: that's when you Derrick Coleman, I was with Steve Harvey
- 4:23Speaker 1: was up in New York too. Every time we went
- 4:24Speaker 1: up there, we connected, you know, eating something great Detroit restaurant. Boy,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I tell you, boy, we eat some food up there.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Ter lovely come up there and eat at and also
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, go shoe shopping, go shoot shopping. Come on,
- 4:42Speaker 1: ye man, go see water over at up that place. Man.
- 4:45Speaker 1: You know the name, you know the names and h
- 4:48Speaker 1: that was the fun part of our relationship. But you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: it was always coming up there where there's a broadcast
- 4:53Speaker 1: and always talking about what we can do with the
- 4:55Speaker 1: turkey drives up there with you guys man and in
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Detroit area with the local radio affiliate. So let's
- 5:01Speaker 1: talk about first your back to school supply drive. What
- 5:04Speaker 1: started that and how can one help when the next
- 5:09Speaker 1: year are or do you do it doing the spring
- 5:12Speaker 1: or you just do it during the August when they're
- 5:14Speaker 1: going back to school and normally doing in August, Mashan,
- 5:17Speaker 1: because man, I'm asking for so all years. So I
- 5:20Speaker 1: got to kind of targeted month where specifric programs are
- 5:23Speaker 1: going on. So the back to school rally, it's really
- 5:26Speaker 1: an opportunity to bring families together before schools start. They
- 5:30Speaker 1: got free haircuts. Also put not just school supplies in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the backpack, and put toiletries because Rashan, some kids are
- 5:37Speaker 1: living in shelters. Some kids are living on the couch
- 5:40Speaker 1: friends or families, So we want to make sure they
- 5:42Speaker 1: have adult white, They got the older it, they got
- 5:44Speaker 1: body washed, all the things that they need so they
- 5:47Speaker 1: can start school. Because no kid wants to come to
- 5:50Speaker 1: school not having the tombs they need to be successful.
- 5:53Speaker 1: We want to encourage kids to receive that translates of education.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And you only do that when you feel well equipped,
- 5:59Speaker 1: when you feel well prepared, and so we want kids
- 6:01Speaker 1: to be prepared. Want you to look good, get your
- 6:03Speaker 1: hair covered. Mona feeds you so there's no excuse for
- 6:07Speaker 1: you not to go to school. So my job is
- 6:09Speaker 1: to alleviate these non academic various education and so these
- 6:13Speaker 1: programs I started out of pain because young people are
- 6:16Speaker 1: talking to me. Hey I need this, Mr Ward. I
- 6:18Speaker 1: mean that. So your job as an adult is to
- 6:20Speaker 1: get those things close the gap. Let this kid just
- 6:24Speaker 1: focused on school and not have to worry about the
- 6:26Speaker 1: adults vacation. I got a program with our energy company,
- 6:30Speaker 1: so therefore we can get in front of the light field.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You can get in front of the gas feel before
- 6:34Speaker 1: those winter months. Get that mother and father on a
- 6:37Speaker 1: payment plan on some type of programs for the lights
- 6:40Speaker 1: and gas are not cut off because the kids are
- 6:42Speaker 1: coming to me at eight o'clock in the morning, payment
- 6:44Speaker 1: through my lights and gas cut off. Now, this kid
- 6:46Speaker 1: is trying to figure out all day how can he
- 6:48Speaker 1: help his mom or his daddy. Let's get in front
- 6:50Speaker 1: of Let's be proactive. Let's help young people achieve their goals.
- 6:54Speaker 1: You know, so true, because young people should not have
- 6:57Speaker 1: to worry about electricity. I was laughing at my wife. Uh,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you know, I live in Atlanta and I live in Houston.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And they drove back this weekend too to Houston. My
- 7:05Speaker 1: daughter drove about seven of the of the twelve hours
- 7:08Speaker 1: to drive back, and then my wife, you know, she
- 7:10Speaker 1: got up earlier on Sunday morning by ten o'clock and
- 7:13Speaker 1: my daughter was still in bed, and I said, she said, uh,
- 7:16Speaker 1: look at that, she still sleep I said, her baby.
- 7:18Speaker 1: First of all, you know, she's a senior in college.
- 7:20Speaker 1: She's doing fantastic. She lives in a really good household.
- 7:22Speaker 1: She doesn't have to worry about anything. I said. The
- 7:24Speaker 1: only reason we get up out of bed because worry
- 7:26Speaker 1: gets outside of bed. You know, thoughts of how to
- 7:29Speaker 1: pay a bill, how to put food on the table,
- 7:32Speaker 1: or rent our children, or your life. That's what gets
- 7:35Speaker 1: us out of bed. Otherwise we stay in bed too.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But that's what young people should only have to worry about. This.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You only worry about academics, worry about dreams, dreaming the
- 7:44Speaker 1: impossible and making it come true. And that's why I
- 7:47Speaker 1: really appreciate it. But really finally getting you on the
- 7:49Speaker 1: show at the time in my life where I'm I
- 7:52Speaker 1: feel I'm complete, I feel I'm whole, and I can
- 7:54Speaker 1: come back into your life and make make be a benefit,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you know, being an asset to what you're doing up
- 7:59Speaker 1: in the chart area. And that's really key. When I
- 8:02Speaker 1: hear you say, you know a kid coming to you
- 8:04Speaker 1: eight o'clock more and talking about my I don't know
- 8:06Speaker 1: if I can get I got big, I don't know
- 8:08Speaker 1: my life's going to be on. That should not be
- 8:10Speaker 1: a child's word. A child's words should be you know
- 8:13Speaker 1: what the baseball score was, What the football score was?
- 8:16Speaker 1: You know what? What what my grades are going to
- 8:18Speaker 1: be in school? What I gotta wear that allows in
- 8:21Speaker 1: the function normal. If they are not allow of the
- 8:24Speaker 1: function normal at a young age, then become a very
- 8:27Speaker 1: dysfunction on adult. And that's what you're trying to stop.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Let me say a quick story, brother, So you know
- 8:33Speaker 1: right now we're doing they're doing remote learning. Okay, so
- 8:37Speaker 1: we're asking kids rashan to compete worldwide when they can't
- 8:41Speaker 1: connect locally. When kids don't have internet, don't have hotspot,
- 8:45Speaker 1: don't have Chrome books. Some kids are in transition. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: had an educator called me last week and say, hey,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I got a kid that's doing the zoom in the bed.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Now your first thought will be, this kid is in
- 8:57Speaker 1: the bed because he don't want to be seen. No,
- 8:59Speaker 1: let's kill the in your back. This kid is in
- 9:01Speaker 1: a bear with Sean because they have no furniture. Bed
- 9:04Speaker 1: is the only ferns he has. So what I'm gonna
- 9:06Speaker 1: do tomorrow or Wendsy is I'm going to complete the
- 9:09Speaker 1: deal with the furniture place and at least get this
- 9:12Speaker 1: kid a din at table, and that table gives an
- 9:15Speaker 1: opportunity to have family dinner. You can now set up.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Your posture is better and you feel like you know what,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I feel good about it? Why are we having kids
- 9:24Speaker 1: and conditions? That's in humane? Man. There's a pandemic of
- 9:29Speaker 1: poverty with Sean. Before the coronavirus, my people were suffered.
- 9:33Speaker 1: My people were making decisions to buy gas through a
- 9:36Speaker 1: buy food. How do I survive? Now? This pandemic has
- 9:39Speaker 1: done nothing but exacerbate what poverty is. And see, one
- 9:44Speaker 1: of the things about poverty it limits access to people
- 9:47Speaker 1: that can help you. Stop just all about money. People
- 9:50Speaker 1: are forgotten about. In particular River Rouge Risking, a suburb
- 9:54Speaker 1: of Detroit, there's more marijuana dispensaries and food. I so
- 9:58Speaker 1: therefore I have to start a mobile food pastry on Wednesdays.
- 10:02Speaker 1: But Sean, I have people driving forty five minutes each way.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Some people, because the need is so great, get picking
- 10:09Speaker 1: up food for themselves and their neighbor. And I'm gonna
- 10:11Speaker 1: seeing you a picture of a guy that comes every Wednesday.
- 10:14Speaker 1: He's uh vetteran with prosthetic lad He's on a scooter.
- 10:18Speaker 1: He's sticking a food for him and his neighbor. Another
- 10:21Speaker 1: brother comes, he just has a suitcase. I said, we're
- 10:23Speaker 1: gonna feel his suitcase up. You can walk back to
- 10:25Speaker 1: your apartment. It's less judge and more help. People are
- 10:28Speaker 1: hungry and when you're hungry, with you your brain can't
- 10:31Speaker 1: even function at its full capacity because the blood flowers
- 10:35Speaker 1: cut off your blood, your blood, your bluecoases because so
- 10:38Speaker 1: now your blinding bring his functions at half capacity because
- 10:41Speaker 1: you're hungry. And when you're hungry, man, that's a that's
- 10:44Speaker 1: a pain sensation. But the food insecurity is a lack
- 10:47Speaker 1: of access that could resources, that can economics. So my
- 10:52Speaker 1: job is to figure out how do we help the
- 10:54Speaker 1: community as a whole. Now you help mom and daddy,
- 10:58Speaker 1: you can help the kids because the key it has
- 11:00Speaker 1: this stress that they should not have. To your point,
- 11:03Speaker 1: those kids should be to go to sleep at night,
- 11:04Speaker 1: get up in the morning. I'll worry about being touching
- 11:07Speaker 1: them in the middle of night. By the step father,
- 11:09Speaker 1: being evicted, being without lights and gas man, you don't
- 11:13Speaker 1: have lights and gas. And it's a problem right especial
- 11:18Speaker 1: winter coming. You know a lot of people realize it
- 11:22Speaker 1: gets hot in Detroit to it gets it gets hot
- 11:25Speaker 1: up there. A lot of people just they don't get no,
- 11:27Speaker 1: they get hot up there, get hot in New York
- 11:29Speaker 1: to troge your cargo. All those numbers, but up there
- 11:31Speaker 1: and human as you say, And that's you know when
- 11:33Speaker 1: I when I think about, first of all, Terrence, your
- 11:36Speaker 1: your passion and your articulation is outstanding man. And uh
- 11:40Speaker 1: and I'm mad now that this the first time I've
- 11:43Speaker 1: heard you on my show. So you guys to be
- 11:45Speaker 1: a regular man. You know you might be one of
- 11:47Speaker 1: my I always tell people, man, I bring people in
- 11:49Speaker 1: my life there that that motivate me. You know what
- 11:51Speaker 1: I'm saying. I'd been going like talk for a minute.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Now shot to your point, Man, I'm at a spaceman
- 11:59Speaker 1: where I just feel like you get four types of
- 12:03Speaker 1: people to come in your life. Though the ads attract,
- 12:05Speaker 1: multiplied divide, I need more addition and multiplication less subtraction
- 12:09Speaker 1: in the visit because God got me on the flight
- 12:11Speaker 1: that I prayed on the side I prayed on this
- 12:14Speaker 1: flight to be able to make an indelible impact to
- 12:16Speaker 1: be that guy to say, you know what, Mr WILLI
- 12:18Speaker 1: inspired me not to give up the reason why I
- 12:20Speaker 1: come to school. He supplied my need. You don't owe
- 12:23Speaker 1: me not to give it back to somebody else, because
- 12:25Speaker 1: so many helped me. I stand on the shoulders a giant.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you a story, man. I was ten
- 12:30Speaker 1: years old, traveled to New Orleans and see my grandfather.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I got there on a Wednesday night with shot On
- 12:36Speaker 1: Thursday night, I went to sleep. This guy was tied
- 12:39Speaker 1: up and shot twice. I slept through the whole ordeal.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'm telling you my life has done in vain. I
- 12:45Speaker 1: cannot afford to not do good work. My life has
- 12:48Speaker 1: been spared, man, So I gotta make sure that i'm
- 12:51Speaker 1: every day. How am I helping people? How am I
- 12:53Speaker 1: helping people? Because in this life and we go through
- 12:56Speaker 1: and success sometimes and a black community survivor's remorse, Oh
- 13:01Speaker 1: you think you all that? No, No, that's what you think.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I just read a different decision. I want my life
- 13:06Speaker 1: to be positive. As a former athletes. Two things I
- 13:09Speaker 1: got from basketball that discipline and accountability. Man, those two
- 13:14Speaker 1: factors are prevalent in my life. If you disc when
- 13:16Speaker 1: you get up at the stage a certain time every morning,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and you consistent, you hold yourself accountable. Conceive, brother, real
- 13:23Speaker 1: growth is holding yourself accountable. True self care is I'm
- 13:27Speaker 1: allowing myself the grace to make the mistake. I'll get
- 13:30Speaker 1: back at it again in the mall. Man. So guys
- 13:33Speaker 1: like you man inspired me so much, man that I'm like, Damn,
- 13:37Speaker 1: what Sean is? I remember with Sean ninety two point three.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I remember that situation. I remember you're going dominating the
- 13:43Speaker 1: sea markets, brother, running that now nastily syndicated shows and
- 13:48Speaker 1: movies and everything that I said. Ship, And I just
- 13:51Speaker 1: gotta make sure I'm staying in the game. I stay
- 13:53Speaker 1: connect to this brother somehow, some way the suits man, listen, Buh,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I was there, man. Now, I just appreciate your humble
- 14:02Speaker 1: his brother, But you're a bad man. I'm blessed to have.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Every time I text, you hit me back. So I'm
- 14:07Speaker 1: blessed to have that connectivity, man. Because there's a thing
- 14:10Speaker 1: called overflow. Brother, I believe in it, and I'm not
- 14:13Speaker 1: appreciate in any any shape before. Brother. But Topers thirteen
- 14:18Speaker 1: and four Residents with Me is the soul of a
- 14:20Speaker 1: lazy man desires that has nothing but the soul of
- 14:24Speaker 1: a villigen man shall be may rich. I will never
- 14:26Speaker 1: be as rich as Bill Gates. So I'm gonna be
- 14:28Speaker 1: rich and and love and empathy for my people. You know,
- 14:32Speaker 1: that's absolutely the truth, and that's for driving me. Here's
- 14:35Speaker 1: here's the thing that I love listening to you, because
- 14:38Speaker 1: you have your spirit, you have your point of view,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and you know the thing about is that let's let's
- 14:43Speaker 1: take everybody on the journey. When we've met used with
- 14:46Speaker 1: Derrick Coleman, NBA Superstar, Okay, Sarra used or everybody know
- 14:51Speaker 1: the history of him, Detrod Native. And then I was
- 14:53Speaker 1: with Steve Harvard and we were building their brands, shaping
- 14:56Speaker 1: their brands. You know, yours only philanthropic side for Derrick Coleman.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Mine was just on the global media side with Steve
- 15:02Speaker 1: as well as feeling dropping. Okay, fast forward now, and
- 15:05Speaker 1: I said that the earlier part of the call. You know,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I have my voice, I know exactly who was Sean McDonald's.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I know exactly what I'm trying to do. I know
- 15:13Speaker 1: my relationships and all of them are very good. My
- 15:15Speaker 1: relationships in the past have been very good. When I
- 15:18Speaker 1: hear you talk, I hear a clean point of view
- 15:21Speaker 1: about what you want to do for the people from
- 15:24Speaker 1: your point of view, and there's nobody stopping you. Because
- 15:26Speaker 1: a lot of times when you work with other people,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you have to go, what do you want to do?
- 15:29Speaker 1: What do you want to do? And it's not your
- 15:31Speaker 1: vision that you're shaping. You're shaping their vision. Their vision
- 15:34Speaker 1: and action may not move at the page that you
- 15:36Speaker 1: wanted to move. And I'm hearing an indomitable and the
- 15:39Speaker 1: dominable pace of of I can get it down now.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I got the relationships. How did they get to this
- 15:46Speaker 1: point in your life? Terms? Man? I remember Sean and
- 15:50Speaker 1: I was getting ready to play uh AU Championship Tender,
- 15:55Speaker 1: just the arm strong. My grandmother said something to me.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I didn't realize what she was saying. That that partiplate moment.
- 16:01Speaker 1: She gave me some money to catch the bus and
- 16:02Speaker 1: she says, you're gonna do something great with people. And
- 16:05Speaker 1: I love my grandmother so much, I just okay, grandma. Man,
- 16:09Speaker 1: fast forward something ten or fifteen years ago, I'm speaking
- 16:12Speaker 1: to kids in the light. Bloob went off. My grandmother
- 16:15Speaker 1: had prophesies over my life and she said, you're gonna
- 16:18Speaker 1: do this. All the things she said I was going
- 16:20Speaker 1: to do, I have done. I grew up in the Dopehouse.
- 16:23Speaker 1: We had to walk from the Dopehouse. Now walk the
- 16:25Speaker 1: halls to the White House with Obama. That whole that
- 16:28Speaker 1: that whole, that whole movement. I don't know how proud
- 16:30Speaker 1: she would have been to sacrifice. Uh. And so for me,
- 16:33Speaker 1: I just said, man, I know my space because I remember, Man,
- 16:38Speaker 1: when I first moved back to the stray from Arizona,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I was calling some of these mentor groups, which I
- 16:43Speaker 1: was calling a hundred black men. I was calling an
- 16:46Speaker 1: urban league. I want to just come to be a
- 16:48Speaker 1: partnerment let me help to this day, whether they never
- 16:51Speaker 1: called me back to twenty years later, they never called me.
- 16:54Speaker 1: But what God did is he forced me to do
- 16:56Speaker 1: my own thing. He said, you got it. You got
- 16:59Speaker 1: good relations ships, you up the people you're from there.
- 17:02Speaker 1: You you know what for these kids. I can build
- 17:05Speaker 1: relationships with kids with Sean. If you talk to a
- 17:07Speaker 1: kid five days a week in school, right, that's four weeks.
- 17:11Speaker 1: That's twenty contacts you've made with that kid over a
- 17:15Speaker 1: five month period. That's a hundred contacts you and that
- 17:18Speaker 1: kid got a relationship. Is that simple? Hi? How you
- 17:21Speaker 1: doing with Sean? Hey man? How was your week here
- 17:23Speaker 1: with Sean? What's with say? All of a sudden, Rashawn
- 17:26Speaker 1: knows you're pouring into him. You're asking questions. You're not
- 17:30Speaker 1: just yelling at Rashan. Pull your pants stuff. I tell
- 17:33Speaker 1: you this, man, if you raise their dreams and raise
- 17:36Speaker 1: their aspirations, Rashan will raise his pants because Rashan wants
- 17:39Speaker 1: to make you proud. Every I've never met a young
- 17:42Speaker 1: kid to stay mr Will. I want to be a failure.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They're failing because adults have failed them. I don't want
- 17:48Speaker 1: to be their adult brother. I don't want to be
- 17:50Speaker 1: their adult when they can't trust me. I tell you
- 17:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna be here. I'm gonna be here left God
- 17:54Speaker 1: cause me home. But I tell you, wa be there
- 17:56Speaker 1: nine o'clock. I'm gonna be there eight thirty because you
- 17:59Speaker 1: dependent on me. I do not want to disappoint these
- 18:01Speaker 1: young people. And that's key. That's key. I've learned that,
- 18:04Speaker 1: especially kids to have known rejection or disappointment all their lives.
- 18:09Speaker 1: What you cannot do is like make a solo appearance
- 18:11Speaker 1: and expect them to respect you because they used to that.
- 18:14Speaker 1: They used to. They used to love ones doing them
- 18:16Speaker 1: like that. They used to parents doing them like that.
- 18:18Speaker 1: They used to people just dropping off stuff and go
- 18:21Speaker 1: and see you later. They they don't that there's nothing
- 18:25Speaker 1: loyal about that relationship. So they will they will. They
- 18:28Speaker 1: will battle you, they will fight you, they will fight change,
- 18:31Speaker 1: they will fight. They won't respect the process. And so
- 18:34Speaker 1: we talked about the back to school supply drive, which
- 18:37Speaker 1: is outstanding every August, and then we have the hygiene campaign.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I have six sisters, so so this is something I'm
- 18:44Speaker 1: very familiar with from from just just living with six
- 18:47Speaker 1: sisters and the importance of hygiene. And I talked to
- 18:49Speaker 1: my daughter about it all the time as well, letting
- 18:51Speaker 1: them know. And she knows, but you always let them
- 18:53Speaker 1: know how important it is to be from a working standpoint,
- 18:56Speaker 1: from a relationship standpoint, from a social standpoint, how polling
- 19:00Speaker 1: your hygienes are to you talk about the hygiene campaign, man,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I was I was getting ready, I was preparing for
- 19:06Speaker 1: my annual turkey drive, and I'm in the school, I'm talking.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I see a young lady in the corner and she's crying,
- 19:11Speaker 1: and I go to it, Hey, what's going on? She say,
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'm miss reel them on my period. I don't have
- 19:15Speaker 1: any paths of pain lines. So right then I was
- 19:18Speaker 1: mad at myself when she told me this. I said,
- 19:19Speaker 1: what you don't have what you need? I was pissed
- 19:23Speaker 1: because I said, how did I fail not to start
- 19:25Speaker 1: this program? How do I know how? I'm so in tune,
- 19:28Speaker 1: But I'm not in tune because I missed this. So
- 19:31Speaker 1: I started talking too. I said, We're gonna get what
- 19:33Speaker 1: you need. From that day forward, brother, I started a
- 19:36Speaker 1: female hiding campaign. When we collect feminine products for young ladies,
- 19:39Speaker 1: put them in the school. So now these young ladies
- 19:42Speaker 1: can go see Miss Johnson. So go see Miss Tony
- 19:45Speaker 1: where they need to go see discreetly and education is
- 19:49Speaker 1: never disrupted. What happens, man, when those young ladies are
- 19:52Speaker 1: on that cycle and they don't come to school or
- 19:54Speaker 1: it come to school. I would it come to school
- 19:57Speaker 1: not knowing when it's gonna happen. So okay, now it happened.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So now kids are talking about you. Your body's shame.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Now he's not coming to school now. The leaves the
- 20:05Speaker 1: chronic absentee of the Michigan is top ten in the
- 20:07Speaker 1: country on human trafficking. If we lose those kids to
- 20:10Speaker 1: the streets, sometime they never come back. So I want
- 20:13Speaker 1: to make sure that we alleviate that barrier to education.
- 20:17Speaker 1: And it's just something simple. Man. When I'm going to
- 20:18Speaker 1: the hotel's brother, I just came back from a trip.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I get all I'll order. I get extra lotion and
- 20:24Speaker 1: and body wash and put it in my backpack and
- 20:26Speaker 1: bring it back home. And I know I'm running to
- 20:28Speaker 1: a kid that's gonna leave this stuff. It's not judgment,
- 20:31Speaker 1: it's helping these young people, loving them pass their pain,
- 20:34Speaker 1: loving them pass the mistake. Because these kids have been
- 20:38Speaker 1: on earth two hundred months. They don't know enough for shine.
- 20:40Speaker 1: They don't know, they don't have other wisdom. They're trying
- 20:43Speaker 1: to survive and they just know that way we walked
- 20:45Speaker 1: to the school building, that this is a place of
- 20:48Speaker 1: love and empathy and you've done your job. But kid
- 20:51Speaker 1: gets the school, brothers, they've done their job. Restles don't
- 20:54Speaker 1: these adults, because these adults don't do their job. And
- 20:56Speaker 1: you get out to wait and get somebody in there.
- 20:58Speaker 1: You wanna love this kid and see this kid across
- 21:01Speaker 1: the finish line. Every kid needs a champions. Every kid
- 21:04Speaker 1: doesn't have a champion. Well you are one, Terence Wheeler.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I'm talking to Terence Wheeler out of the Detroit area.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Have been knowing him a long time. And the thing
- 21:13Speaker 1: about our relationship, whenever he wanted me to post something
- 21:16Speaker 1: wherever he wanted me to do something for him, I
- 21:18Speaker 1: responded back to him. You know, he tells you the truth. Now,
- 21:21Speaker 1: I don't care. I never was too big not to
- 21:22Speaker 1: respond back to his nails. And I only have one
- 21:24Speaker 1: phone number one three. I only got one phone of
- 21:27Speaker 1: my whole life. And they started selling cell phone. I
- 21:30Speaker 1: got my cell phone number and they've never changed the
- 21:32Speaker 1: Terrence Okay, and so and and and so so. The
- 21:36Speaker 1: final program many programs, and we're just talking about three
- 21:40Speaker 1: of them on this show is the All Star Give
- 21:42Speaker 1: Back Turkey Drive. We all know when you said Turkey
- 21:44Speaker 1: Drive gotta be in no film because I'm a man
- 21:47Speaker 1: with Steve Harving. You give out them Turkey Black people
- 21:49Speaker 1: wanted them, Turkey Bro, the throes and Turkeys. Man. You
- 21:54Speaker 1: want to make a black person happen, give a Turkey brother?
- 21:57Speaker 1: Give yes, yes, yes, yes, man? Um. We so when
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was me my mother back in her days of addiction. UH.
- 22:06Speaker 1: In the food supply line, Man, I focus hope, and
- 22:09Speaker 1: I said, one day I'm gonna be able to give
- 22:11Speaker 1: back turkeys. UH. And so me and Derek Covian we
- 22:14Speaker 1: started Man with two hundred turkeys twenty two years ago
- 22:18Speaker 1: and now we're doing five thousand turkeys for all the trimmings.
- 22:21Speaker 1: For Sean. We talked about we got they get two
- 22:24Speaker 1: candas about the mac and cheese, solt A dressing, and
- 22:27Speaker 1: Jiffy mix in a twelve fifteen pound bird. But what
- 22:30Speaker 1: we've done is also revamped it a little bit from No.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I've got health in human services because once again, those
- 22:36Speaker 1: same people are in line for a turkey, may need
- 22:38Speaker 1: some assistance with their utility build, may need some assistance
- 22:41Speaker 1: with their Rennis assistance, and so we have those agencies
- 22:45Speaker 1: there as well. So now it's the full wrap around
- 22:48Speaker 1: services provide some reprieve for those families. Man. And so
- 22:51Speaker 1: it's just one of the best days of my life
- 22:53Speaker 1: for that happened. It's to see a family come in
- 22:56Speaker 1: with so much despair and hopeless and we give them
- 22:58Speaker 1: a good word. Matthew twenty, I have a thirty fives
- 23:01Speaker 1: hungry and you gave me something real simple. This is,
- 23:04Speaker 1: by far, I can say it humbly, the best turkey
- 23:07Speaker 1: drive in the country. Okay, okay, I gave out some turkeys,
- 23:12Speaker 1: not Terrence. Now you're talking about y'all gave me man.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Come back this up, Mr we Leave, Mr Coleman, Mr
- 23:19Speaker 1: Wen call you about your last name? Okay, d C
- 23:22Speaker 1: Up Okay, because you're about to make me make a donation. Here, brother,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I'm popping up in my chail the Terence we d C.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Turkey dog turkey give it away now. Okay, we're gonna
- 23:35Speaker 1: go back. We're gonna go back. But I'm talking about
- 23:37Speaker 1: RA five four three to one RA yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and so so because because I tell everybody about it again,
- 23:48Speaker 1: Slow it Down is in the Detroit area. Okay, it's
- 23:51Speaker 1: called the All Star give Back Turkey Drive. My boy
- 23:54Speaker 1: Derrick Coleman been doing it for twenty two years. I
- 23:56Speaker 1: swear to you, d C. He's six nine and a half,
- 24:00Speaker 1: cool and young brother I ever met in my life.
- 24:03Speaker 1: That's why I met him. That's why I met Terence
- 24:05Speaker 1: right there, you know. And they were always about the calls.
- 24:09Speaker 1: They were always about being entrepreneurs. They were all about
- 24:12Speaker 1: the community, because I want to tell people you can't
- 24:15Speaker 1: have a customer, they're they usually having customers. There's future customers,
- 24:18Speaker 1: future large and future branding, future taxpayers. That's what helps.
- 24:22Speaker 1: That's what happens. You help people in the community. And
- 24:25Speaker 1: that's what I don't understand racism. It's racism. Just stop
- 24:28Speaker 1: then this country being better because guess what the community
- 24:31Speaker 1: be better. If the community is better, I mean we
- 24:33Speaker 1: have more better qualified workers. I mean we have better
- 24:36Speaker 1: qualified taxpayers, we have better qualified cities. And that's where
- 24:40Speaker 1: racism stops. And that's what you're battling, what you're changing.
- 24:44Speaker 1: And so they all start Turkey drive get back, Turkey
- 24:47Speaker 1: drive starts win. It's it's always it's always as soon
- 24:51Speaker 1: as they before I give back, because every person is
- 24:56Speaker 1: all start ferments down to the CEO. I'm talking about. Man,
- 24:59Speaker 1: you've got we whites, we got black, We've got me Mexicans,
- 25:02Speaker 1: We've got Asians, young and old. In line. We're not
- 25:05Speaker 1: here to judge anybody. We're here to serve. And that's
- 25:09Speaker 1: the key of serving people and saying, listen to mars,
- 25:11Speaker 1: gonna be a better day you can make you giving
- 25:14Speaker 1: them some hope, letting them know they can conquer adversity.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Refused to be average. Average is a bad word. Average
- 25:20Speaker 1: me and you the top of the bottom. Mediaki is
- 25:22Speaker 1: a bad word. Let's be great, Let's be phenomenal. I
- 25:26Speaker 1: believe in you. Those people leave us feeling better about themselves.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I hate when people go places and they giving away
- 25:32Speaker 1: something free. They ask you a litany questions and don't
- 25:35Speaker 1: the way you're from. Man probably has no dip codad.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I don't care where you work at. I don't care
- 25:39Speaker 1: where you where you live that man, listen, we have
- 25:43Speaker 1: enough resources in this country, so feed the poor. We
- 25:47Speaker 1: just can't satisfy the rich. Yes, now, now let's talk
- 25:51Speaker 1: about this. First of all, I'm gonna make a thousand
- 25:54Speaker 1: dollar donation to the All Star Get Back Turkey, right
- 25:59Speaker 1: gonna make it. That's that's a lot of turkeys right there,
- 26:01Speaker 1: that's a lot of turkey. I've done the turkey drive.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I know where the thousand dollars do for you. So
- 26:07Speaker 1: so when we hang up, I'm giving my email address
- 26:11Speaker 1: so you can send me nine and I'm gonna procept
- 26:14Speaker 1: that check, get it to you the fine time. You know,
- 26:16Speaker 1: won't be looking what we call you know what I mean, man,
- 26:18Speaker 1: you don't call Roushan with that money. But with that money,
- 26:20Speaker 1: that brother is just front of me on on the
- 26:22Speaker 1: radio shows podcast playing me let me at d C.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I mean, you get what you're gonna do to me.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I ain't gonna land in Detroit be looking over my
- 26:30Speaker 1: shoulder and so and so. Because these campaigns and your passion,
- 26:36Speaker 1: the energy to Back to School Drive, the hygiene campaign,
- 26:39Speaker 1: they all Star getting back Turkey Drive, just to change lives.
- 26:42Speaker 1: It all happens in the city of Detroit and all
- 26:45Speaker 1: and it's not a campaign tied to cover color. It's
- 26:48Speaker 1: a campaign tied to people who need help. And like
- 26:50Speaker 1: you said, everybody is an all Star. And that's why
- 26:53Speaker 1: that title right there, all Stars, not needy people. These
- 26:56Speaker 1: an all star. These people, like I said earlier, these
- 26:58Speaker 1: are people who work, These people who have families, These
- 27:01Speaker 1: are taxpaying people. These are the people who are underserved.
- 27:04Speaker 1: When it came to the ponent the pandemic, hitting the
- 27:06Speaker 1: pandemic with just COVID eighteen and the Cares Act didn't
- 27:09Speaker 1: come through. Now this whole struggle, they really need us.
- 27:12Speaker 1: That's why I'm making this thousand dollar donation to you
- 27:15Speaker 1: because right now you know they suspending evictions to the
- 27:18Speaker 1: thirty first. You know the threaded dollar check that they
- 27:21Speaker 1: were passing out that end the weeks ago and so
- 27:24Speaker 1: and now they see sitting around with debating if they're
- 27:26Speaker 1: gonna renew another cares that campaign. So I'm I'm gonna
- 27:30Speaker 1: help as much as I can and you do it
- 27:33Speaker 1: on a daily Brasis. This is your mission in terms,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I said, I'm proud of you, brother, and again I
- 27:38Speaker 1: will be bringing you back on the show. And no rumble, okay,
- 27:40Speaker 1: And that probably probably that that week before the TuS
- 27:44Speaker 1: that you give away we're gonna we're gonna come back
- 27:46Speaker 1: on the air and they're gonna come back on the
- 27:48Speaker 1: air man, And I promise you, brother. But I say
- 27:52Speaker 1: this is the truth because I just love your tone
- 27:54Speaker 1: and uh and I just love how you've grown man
- 27:56Speaker 1: as a spokesperson. Uh, your yourarticular is like on, it's fired.
- 28:02Speaker 1: They ain't on. It was always on, but now it's fired.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying that because you got a legacy.
- 28:07Speaker 1: See if you can you see back then you're still
- 28:10Speaker 1: like putting everything together, which was really great. But now man,
- 28:13Speaker 1: you've got a history walking up to people, people know
- 28:16Speaker 1: your your resume. I always tell people, when you're hype
- 28:19Speaker 1: and the things you you've written down meet each other,
- 28:22Speaker 1: then guess what you're now living the life that you're
- 28:25Speaker 1: supposed to live. And that's what you're doing right now
- 28:27Speaker 1: on Tarrens Real Man, thank you so much for something.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's uh, nothing but love. Man. When I when I
- 28:33Speaker 1: when I see the things you're doing, Man, I say,
- 28:36Speaker 1: every time I'm watching a rerun on BAT or something
- 28:39Speaker 1: that man comes from the screen, Man just skills my
- 28:41Speaker 1: heart with joy because you're never You're never like you
- 28:45Speaker 1: know it was too big or never not had enough
- 28:47Speaker 1: time to give a word. And I was talking to
- 28:49Speaker 1: my good friend of my my mom, my middle school
- 28:51Speaker 1: buddy Monty, you know, so when Tahan was popping off
- 28:54Speaker 1: in and just that whole mentorship that you gave him. Man, Uh,
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's just we need older brothers who are not afraid
- 29:02Speaker 1: to pour into us because you know, that's how that's
- 29:05Speaker 1: how legacy start, that's how generational wealth start, that's how
- 29:09Speaker 1: we keep this chain going. When we have a person
- 29:12Speaker 1: of wisdom to give it to a young person, I'll
- 29:14Speaker 1: give it to somebody else. You got a rope, I
- 29:16Speaker 1: got a ladder. Let's go, man, let's help people. Uh.
- 29:19Speaker 1: And So Man, I'm just I'm just honored man to
- 29:22Speaker 1: be sitting here, man talking to you, brother, because I
- 29:25Speaker 1: know you know a lot of people, a lot of
- 29:27Speaker 1: people could be on this show and I'm just a
- 29:29Speaker 1: small vessel honor and humble to be here. Brother, my brother,
- 29:33Speaker 1: you know you're always up every time you everything. You're
- 29:35Speaker 1: up for a campaign, you know I'll be voting. I'll
- 29:37Speaker 1: be voting for you like you see me a linkol.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Don't why, brother, I don't gonna vote for t W.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna do my thing. And by the way, is
- 29:51Speaker 1: sending me one of these I saw he was on LinkedIn.
- 29:53Speaker 1: He had we had his coat and I saw a
- 29:55Speaker 1: coach and I text us to tell you, I need
- 29:58Speaker 1: that blue coat right there. So this week, next week,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I'm getting the code from Talon because I've been I've
- 30:04Speaker 1: been mentoring here. Man. He got back into my life
- 30:06Speaker 1: in February. Man, February, I flew down to flew to
- 30:09Speaker 1: Las Vegas, and I on me. He said, Man, you
- 30:12Speaker 1: really came. But I said, but you asked me to come, yes,
- 30:15Speaker 1: And I guess I guess the things I do, Man,
- 30:18Speaker 1: I just do him, man, And you know, he asked
- 30:20Speaker 1: me to come. You know, wouldn't know no airline how
- 30:23Speaker 1: much you're gonna cause I showed us and all day
- 30:25Speaker 1: with gave him some advice and I just left. He said, wow,
- 30:29Speaker 1: that's yeah, you asked that that advice. That that that
- 30:32Speaker 1: you have, man, because you have been, you know, on
- 30:35Speaker 1: so many circles. You've seen so much, you know, and
- 30:39Speaker 1: so now those mistakes we don't have to make it
- 30:41Speaker 1: because okay with Seawan can give us a point on Hey, man,
- 30:44Speaker 1: go this way now you I'll tell you where to go.
- 30:46Speaker 1: You're a show choice. But you have that wisdom, that
- 30:49Speaker 1: knowledge that you're passing the young brothers, and so we're
- 30:51Speaker 1: gonna receive it. Uh. And trying to multiply to somebody
- 30:55Speaker 1: else's like man, uh yeah monkey God like ge Man
- 31:00Speaker 1: telling you when you hang up this car, saythe rishaw
- 31:03Speaker 1: said you are sitting blue coach to him. He goes
- 31:06Speaker 1: say yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He told me I'm
- 31:09Speaker 1: gonna give it to you the calls. That's whatever, brother.
- 31:12Speaker 1: But what I don't do, I don't take free. I
- 31:14Speaker 1: don't take free. I think I put that drop that
