Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My guest today is Bishop Marvin Sapp. He's a multiplatinum
- 0:04Speaker 1: gospel icon, songwriter, pastor, and executive producer of the new
- 0:07Speaker 1: TV one original film Never Would Have Made It, The
- 0:10Speaker 1: Marvin Staff Story. We also been discussing his fifteenth album, Substance,
- 0:14Speaker 1: released in June, Mark Marvin Stapp's seventh number one album, Debate.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The album was released on his own label, Elevate Entertainment,
- 0:23Speaker 1: which is distributed through thirty Tigers. We'll talk about his
- 0:26Speaker 1: move from his hometown of Grand Rappers Mission to my
- 0:29Speaker 1: home state. What worth tax. We're gonna talk about that
- 0:33Speaker 1: that day right now. Is that he changed? Is that
- 0:36Speaker 1: he changed? But most importantly we're talking about his family,
- 0:42Speaker 1: faith and since a humor from a person who has
- 0:45Speaker 1: delivered such incredible gospel songs like Never would Have Made
- 0:48Speaker 1: It and the best to me, please work with the
- 0:50Speaker 1: money making conversation masterclass, the one and only Bishop Marvin Sapp.
- 0:54Speaker 1: How are you doing certain? I am great, I'm on
- 0:57Speaker 1: top and rising high. How are you doing well? Great?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Let's let's let's let's get to the big move first. Okay,
- 1:02Speaker 1: because I've been up in Michigan like it's a shape
- 1:04Speaker 1: like your hand and then you moved out of my state. Now,
- 1:09Speaker 1: first of all, why did you move? And then we're
- 1:11Speaker 1: gonna talk about the elements. Well, you know, you know, honestly,
- 1:15Speaker 1: you know, we can always use this. You know, people
- 1:18Speaker 1: would say it's a cliche, but honestly, I moved because
- 1:21Speaker 1: it was. It was God it was it was a
- 1:22Speaker 1: god tymed move for me. And UM, I needed change
- 1:28Speaker 1: and I didn't know how bad I needed to change
- 1:30Speaker 1: until I got here. UM And strangely enough, I waited
- 1:36Speaker 1: till I was fifty two years old to decide to
- 1:39Speaker 1: pack my bags and move to another state. UM, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: took a church here. To the church here, I I
- 1:45Speaker 1: learned the mortgage on the church and the city knowledge
- 1:47Speaker 1: and had a successful church in Grand Mischigan, five earning
- 1:50Speaker 1: plus members. Actively we're worshiping with us every week. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: UH moved down here to start from scratched in essence,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and I still have three UH storage units of furniture
- 2:03Speaker 1: in Michigan. And you know, I just came here just
- 2:06Speaker 1: to start over, start fresh, and it's it's been a great,
- 2:09Speaker 1: great blessing to me. You talked about how I left
- 2:12Speaker 1: the state that was shaped like a hand, and I'm
- 2:14Speaker 1: thinking about I moved to a state that shaped like
- 2:16Speaker 1: a frying pangs amazingly, but it was good for me
- 2:27Speaker 1: and it has been good to me. Well you know,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I I love that because y'all, I was born to
- 2:31Speaker 1: rade in Houston. And then people think because you're up
- 2:34Speaker 1: in Dallas for Worth, it's cooler. It's actually it's hotter
- 2:38Speaker 1: in Dallas than it is in in Houston. It's more
- 2:41Speaker 1: humid in Houston is of course it's by the ocean.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But no, I mean, like we this they said, this
- 2:48Speaker 1: summer has been unseasonable. Yes, um, we've averaged a hundred
- 2:53Speaker 1: degrees and no rain for the last sixty plus days.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Every day it's been a hundred plus degrees. And this
- 3:00Speaker 1: is something that I'm absolutely not used to. So I
- 3:03Speaker 1: don't leave the house much. I don't leave the house much.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And uh, but but you know, I have a I
- 3:08Speaker 1: have a great church in Fort Worth, Texas and uh,
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Chosen Vessel Church. And if you get a chance
- 3:14Speaker 1: to come see us, absolutely or you can watch this
- 3:17Speaker 1: every Sunday at eleven am Central Standard Time or any
- 3:19Speaker 1: of our social media platforms and and and it's it's
- 3:23Speaker 1: a great situation. It was a great movie. Cool. I
- 3:25Speaker 1: always feel, you know, because one of my my minutes
- 3:27Speaker 1: of inspiration runs into your syndicated UH platforms that runs
- 3:31Speaker 1: on the national So I always know, hey, that's my part.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Appreciate being a part of that powerful network. Our relationship
- 3:37Speaker 1: goes back to Steve Harvey and uh, you know when
- 3:39Speaker 1: we used to play your music uh in l A
- 3:42Speaker 1: before anybody's allowed gospel. I remember you stopped as an
- 3:45Speaker 1: airport said thank you, Mr Harvey. I appreciate those checks
- 3:52Speaker 1: every time you played my song, absolutely absolutely. But as
- 3:57Speaker 1: you as you grow into talent, as you grow. It
- 3:59Speaker 1: was why when I was watching the movie and the
- 4:01Speaker 1: movie I'm talking about is that the Mofice app story
- 4:03Speaker 1: that's gonna be airing on TV once the TV one
- 4:05Speaker 1: of original. You know, it was kind of like interesting
- 4:08Speaker 1: because I started saying how our relationship was being played
- 4:11Speaker 1: out by some of these of course it didn't extend
- 4:13Speaker 1: beyond for the movie, but our relationship has extended off
- 4:16Speaker 1: beyond that because he's the only ghost gospel artist in
- 4:19Speaker 1: the history of When he was doing the Neighborhood Wards,
- 4:21Speaker 1: we did it for sixty years. Open the show, you
- 4:24Speaker 1: were the only gospel artist I ever asked to open
- 4:26Speaker 1: the show, and Steve Harving I sat down and thought
- 4:29Speaker 1: about that, you know, because we always opened a servir Sid,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I just think it was time and it was in
- 4:33Speaker 1: Las Vegas. It was sold out in the eighteen thousand
- 4:35Speaker 1: people out there, and it was it was it was
- 4:37Speaker 1: a blessing. So you have a gift, sir that we
- 4:40Speaker 1: talked about that gift, your your your wife who's passed away.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We talked about her in the movie a lot. We're
- 4:45Speaker 1: gonna talk about her more in a minute. Sometimes you
- 4:48Speaker 1: ran away from that gift. And so many people in
- 4:50Speaker 1: life run from gifts. I don't understand those gifts that
- 4:53Speaker 1: Gods gives him. Talk about yours and the journey and
- 4:56Speaker 1: how you try to make sure your children and people
- 4:58Speaker 1: around him understand the you have gifts. Well, I think
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know what people really need to understand is that
- 5:04Speaker 1: where there is gift, there's major responsibility. And I think
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know that the reason why people run away from
- 5:09Speaker 1: their gifts is because of the simple fact that the
- 5:12Speaker 1: responsibility that goes along with them can be way, it
- 5:15Speaker 1: can be happy. And you know, yeah, when you consider
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know the responsibility of what you carry. Uh, sometimes
- 5:23Speaker 1: you just don't want the responsibility. So I understand why
- 5:26Speaker 1: people run away from their gifts. I did, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: as a child, I knew what what my calling was
- 5:31Speaker 1: on my life, you know, early, early, early on. UM.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But even though I knew what my call was early on,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I still was like, you know what, I don't want
- 5:39Speaker 1: this because I looked at what other people have to
- 5:42Speaker 1: go through with it, and I don't know if it's
- 5:44Speaker 1: necessarily something that I wanted to be bothered with. UM.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But when you have a gift, when you have a call,
- 5:51Speaker 1: no matter how hard you try to run from it,
- 5:53Speaker 1: some strange reason, it always catches up with you. And Uh,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you can give in easily or you can do like
- 6:00Speaker 1: I did and give it the hard way, but ultimately
- 6:03Speaker 1: you're gonna get into it. So you know, I'm grateful that,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, I've been able to embrace what's all my life,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and not only just embrace what's all my life, but
- 6:18Speaker 1: by the grace of God, be able to carry it
- 6:20Speaker 1: and use it, or rather parlay it into doing some
- 6:25Speaker 1: amazing things. I mean, you know, UM, I'm for the first,
- 6:29Speaker 1: as you already said a few moments ago, the first
- 6:32Speaker 1: a male gospel artist UM to ever have a biopic
- 6:37Speaker 1: of his own. Um. You know, of course, the Clock
- 6:40Speaker 1: Sisters did it as a group UM years ago they
- 6:44Speaker 1: did it wasn't called a biopic, but it was a
- 6:47Speaker 1: docuseries on you know, James Cleveland, the Bear Sisters on
- 6:51Speaker 1: so forth. But to have a movie being done your life,
- 6:55Speaker 1: especially something that you didn't ask for, it kind of
- 6:57Speaker 1: found you right. And to be able to share, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: your ups and your downs and what you had to
- 7:04Speaker 1: come through to get where you are. It's just a
- 7:07Speaker 1: major blessing and I absolutely appreciate it. We'll be right
- 7:10Speaker 1: back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now,
- 7:16Speaker 1: let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald.
- 7:21Speaker 1: That never would have made it film. That's an original film,
- 7:24Speaker 1: The Marvin shap Story written and directed by Syndicated a
- 7:28Speaker 1: radio producer and host Russ Paul as well as he
- 7:33Speaker 1: is a co writer on the project. I co wrote
- 7:35Speaker 1: on it. Russ co wrote on it, and a couple
- 7:37Speaker 1: of other fellas. We all came together and we just
- 7:39Speaker 1: put our our hands together and try to make sure
- 7:42Speaker 1: that we gave people a story that was real. Um,
- 7:47Speaker 1: that was authentic. But most importantly, that was encouraging to
- 7:51Speaker 1: let people know that, yeah, you know, everybody, no matter
- 7:53Speaker 1: how successful they may seem to be to your natural eye,
- 7:57Speaker 1: everybody has a story that they had to come through
- 8:00Speaker 1: something to get to it got to and and and
- 8:03Speaker 1: that coming through it is possible that you don't have
- 8:05Speaker 1: to remain where you are, but but there is in
- 8:09Speaker 1: the end to whatever challenge you packed. And then you
- 8:12Speaker 1: had my good friend Uh on the show producing what
- 8:14Speaker 1: you Feel, Thought you Phil Me and Feel executive produced
- 8:18Speaker 1: as well. And um, my relationship with Field goes way
- 8:22Speaker 1: back because he was my record comedy executive for many
- 8:25Speaker 1: many years at r C Inspiration And honestly he left
- 8:29Speaker 1: r C Inspirational at the same time I left our
- 8:33Speaker 1: c A Inspiration. My contract was up after thirty years.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Amazingly Uh in the Sony system and um, he just
- 8:44Speaker 1: decided he wanted to move on and do some different
- 8:46Speaker 1: things too. But we remain friends. He's my frat brother,
- 8:50Speaker 1: so that makes it easy for both of us. Ka
- 8:53Speaker 1: side of the day, we die by you by and
- 8:56Speaker 1: like I tell Phil, sometimes these conversations be going good
- 9:00Speaker 1: spec you know, and then you know, want to start
- 9:02Speaker 1: talking to a cute about them now see what I'm saying,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and if you tim me all, y'all, ohther than around
- 9:09Speaker 1: talking pretty about left pretty. But but it's a blessing
- 9:16Speaker 1: man to be able to to be able to you know,
- 9:19Speaker 1: share and people to you know, be able to see
- 9:23Speaker 1: and and and and allow them to have some you know,
- 9:27Speaker 1: insight into your life so they get a clearer understanding
- 9:30Speaker 1: of who you are as a person. So I'm honored,
- 9:32Speaker 1: I really am. I'm I'm honored, and I want people
- 9:35Speaker 1: to watch it on twenty one of August. I believe
- 9:38Speaker 1: it's gonna be a great blessing to them, and I
- 9:39Speaker 1: belong to some of them are gonna be challenging and encouraged. No, yeah, yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I get it. No matter how bad my child may
- 9:47Speaker 1: be right now, there's still an opportunity for a turnaround.
- 9:50Speaker 1: No matter how bad sick I am, there's still an
- 9:53Speaker 1: opportunity for a turnaround and to teach people to remain
- 9:56Speaker 1: in faith in the midst of it all. I think
- 9:58Speaker 1: that's what it's all about. And it's really a beautiful movie.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Um you know we're talking about never would have made
- 10:02Speaker 1: it as we will be premiered on the TV one network.
- 10:05Speaker 1: The Marvin staff story. UM, I want not asked you
- 10:08Speaker 1: this question. Is the movie a celebration of your overcoming
- 10:12Speaker 1: the odds in your life or a tribute to your
- 10:14Speaker 1: late wife. I think it's a little bit of both.
- 10:18Speaker 1: It's it's a celebration of me overcoming the odds of
- 10:23Speaker 1: life and my children overcoming some very very challenging moments
- 10:29Speaker 1: and still being able to rise above them and succeed
- 10:33Speaker 1: in spite of my kids. I'm so proud of them.
- 10:36Speaker 1: My son works for Amazon Web Services. Um, he's doing
- 10:40Speaker 1: very well. Just got engaged to a very lovely young lady.
- 10:44Speaker 1: My daughters and her master's program in psychology. Um, just
- 10:49Speaker 1: like her mom, appearing to get her c I d um.
- 10:53Speaker 1: My baby girl is finishing her dual bachelor's in psychology
- 10:58Speaker 1: and biology with the goal of going to medical school.
- 11:02Speaker 1: You know, because of the trauma that they went through,
- 11:06Speaker 1: they could have went a whole another direction, right, because
- 11:10Speaker 1: we taught them faith, Because we taught them the importance
- 11:15Speaker 1: of trust in God even when you can't trace him.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Even though that's definitely uh, you know a church colloquialism, um,
- 11:24Speaker 1: trusting God when you can't trace him. I believe that
- 11:27Speaker 1: that's the reason why they yet and still have been
- 11:30Speaker 1: as successful and even moving forward in the levels of
- 11:34Speaker 1: success that they have been here. And I'm a proud
- 11:37Speaker 1: dad because of that. Um, I know that I had
- 11:40Speaker 1: them from eleven, thirteen, and sixteen till now, but their
- 11:46Speaker 1: mom and still such foundational morals in them, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 1: while she was here. It it it speaks to who
- 11:55Speaker 1: they are as young adults. But also I did I
- 11:59Speaker 1: did wanted to pay a manage to my wife, I
- 12:02Speaker 1: mean my late wife, Melinda. Um. She was an amazing gift.
- 12:06Speaker 1: She was an individual who in spite of her short
- 12:10Speaker 1: life and her struggle that she had to deal with
- 12:13Speaker 1: with their health. UM, she did some magnificent things. Because
- 12:19Speaker 1: it's a bio pick, because't got ninety minutes when they
- 12:21Speaker 1: able to really put all the things in there that
- 12:23Speaker 1: she did. But one of the things I wanted to
- 12:26Speaker 1: make sure that everyone knew is is that the only
- 12:28Speaker 1: reason why they heard never would have made it is
- 12:31Speaker 1: because pushed me to do it. And that is omage
- 12:37Speaker 1: to her. That is me paying it forward and letting
- 12:40Speaker 1: people know that the reason why they heard that song
- 12:42Speaker 1: is because that. But I mean, like Melinda College professor
- 12:46Speaker 1: in our city. Uh, she was a director of psychometry,
- 12:50Speaker 1: had a mental hospital. She was on the board of
- 12:52Speaker 1: that same mental hospital foundation board at the same mental hospital,
- 12:57Speaker 1: pie Rest Mental Health Services. UM. She was executive pastor
- 13:04Speaker 1: of my church. She was had many different foundations and
- 13:08Speaker 1: things that she was brought up. And she was a
- 13:11Speaker 1: community activist to the point that the Grand Rapid Symphony
- 13:15Speaker 1: Orchestra named an award after the doctor man to be
- 13:19Speaker 1: sad Legacy awards that they give away every year to uh,
- 13:24Speaker 1: some deserving young person or deserving community activists in our
- 13:29Speaker 1: community of Grand Rapids, Michigan. And to me that's important
- 13:32Speaker 1: because they've never done that before. And Esten done and
- 13:35Speaker 1: named by the Grand Rappi Symphony Foundation. So you know,
- 13:40Speaker 1: it's more to her than just what she did musically.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Executive produced Thirsty the record. She executive here, I am
- 13:48Speaker 1: the record. She actually did the video where she was
- 13:51Speaker 1: executive producer and did all the editing and all god stuff.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I could go on and on
- 13:57Speaker 1: and on about what she did do. However, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I want everybody to know that this is this is
- 14:03Speaker 1: me saying, you know, she was a great woman and
- 14:07Speaker 1: my kids need to see that right. They need to
- 14:10Speaker 1: say thank you and we'll be right back with more
- 14:14Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return
- 14:20Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. You know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: the beauty of watching a biopick like this is that
- 14:30Speaker 1: you know you can sing, and you're so you gotta
- 14:34Speaker 1: get an actor in here. You gotta get an actor
- 14:35Speaker 1: in here, thinking hold some notes, you know, thinking hold
- 14:38Speaker 1: some notes. You know the actor you know you brought
- 14:41Speaker 1: in a good old friend, played the child on Steve
- 14:44Speaker 1: Harvey's first sitcom way back in ninety four ABC Me
- 14:47Speaker 1: and the Board, chas Lamar Ship. Yeah, man, Chads is
- 14:51Speaker 1: an amazing yef. He's an amazing sing amazing actor. You
- 14:54Speaker 1: know for those people. Everybody's like, well he don't look
- 14:56Speaker 1: like people. I don't. I didn't even care. I was like,
- 14:59Speaker 1: he can sing, he can act. I mean, we talked,
- 15:03Speaker 1: we communicated. He tapped into the emotions the things that
- 15:06Speaker 1: I was dealing with. Strong in his face too. I'm
- 15:09Speaker 1: just thinking, absolutely, he's a big family man, and uh,
- 15:14Speaker 1: you know, I'm just honored man that when we contacted
- 15:18Speaker 1: him and asked him to be a part of this
- 15:20Speaker 1: and he said, yes, it was really amazing. A lot
- 15:23Speaker 1: of people don't know. I met Chaz in the parking
- 15:26Speaker 1: lot of West Angeles Church of God in Christ maybe
- 15:29Speaker 1: twenty five years ago, right, okay, I know exactly what
- 15:32Speaker 1: that Chris, y'all, and we were just talking. I was
- 15:35Speaker 1: there preaching and he in the parking line. He had
- 15:39Speaker 1: on some necklace and I liked it. I told him
- 15:42Speaker 1: and we out and we talked and laughed and uh.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I went to see him one time when he was
- 15:49Speaker 1: on Broadway, right. He was our pole for uh, you know,
- 15:53Speaker 1: on the Broadway version of Color Purple. Uh. I saw
- 16:00Speaker 1: him there and he's like, what are you doing here?
- 16:01Speaker 1: And I was like, man, I just I'm in town
- 16:03Speaker 1: doing business. And they told me you were forming and
- 16:05Speaker 1: he's like, why did you not that somebody that get
- 16:07Speaker 1: a ticket? I said, no, no no, no, no my ticket
- 16:10Speaker 1: because we're doing everything that you were doing. So when
- 16:14Speaker 1: when the opportunity came to be able to positively work
- 16:17Speaker 1: with him, I was like, absolutely, absolutely, he's the perfect person.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And he did an amazing job and amazing job and
- 16:23Speaker 1: reach I just bringing it up when I said, you
- 16:25Speaker 1: know that he's strong in his faith is that it's
- 16:28Speaker 1: not something he had to find. That he knows you
- 16:31Speaker 1: to find the rationale and it's natural. Uh, and his
- 16:36Speaker 1: approach to his life. And I'm not saying you gotta
- 16:39Speaker 1: go there and they have to have that that that
- 16:41Speaker 1: that deeply immerged values of faith. But I'm just saying,
- 16:44Speaker 1: is that that's that what you saw on that movie,
- 16:47Speaker 1: we'll see on this movie. That is chass Lamar Shepherd
- 16:50Speaker 1: for reading that word. My only thing. I will just
- 16:53Speaker 1: tell you how somebody Bishops said one of the most
- 16:56Speaker 1: entertaining funny naturally off stage. You see he's laughing a
- 17:00Speaker 1: little bit and he's showing me a little person out
- 17:02Speaker 1: the year because he preaches and he seems he's amazing
- 17:06Speaker 1: gospel song. At the Neighborhood Awards, I always have on
- 17:09Speaker 1: the front row, and Steve would ask for them be
- 17:11Speaker 1: on front row because he has a laugh. I mean,
- 17:14Speaker 1: he's one of those people who laugh. He give up
- 17:16Speaker 1: the body when he laughs, he gives up the body.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And if you're if you're a comedian, that's what you want.
- 17:23Speaker 1: You want somebody you can see the last start up
- 17:25Speaker 1: in the in the in the brow and go all
- 17:28Speaker 1: the way down to his feet and that's you laugh
- 17:30Speaker 1: for real, Bishop South. Because I enjoyed. I mean, like
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, I enjoyed. I mean, Steve has always been
- 17:37Speaker 1: great to me. I mean when I say he's been
- 17:39Speaker 1: great to me, I mean, like anything musically I've ever had,
- 17:42Speaker 1: Steve make sure everybody Mama knew about it. I mean,
- 17:44Speaker 1: he really has been I don't want to say it
- 17:48Speaker 1: like this, but he has been like a real chill leader,
- 17:50Speaker 1: and you know with all of my music and alway
- 17:54Speaker 1: has been transparent, having very very serious conversations with me
- 17:59Speaker 1: about his face and things of that nature. And I mean,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I just I'm appreciative, but I mean, I just but
- 18:05Speaker 1: I also feel like just because you're a preacher, you
- 18:08Speaker 1: don't have to be stiff, you know, you gotta be
- 18:10Speaker 1: that dude that uh, you know, don't have no sense
- 18:13Speaker 1: of humor. It's just funny that Crawford and that dog on.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I never get that day on the veil and uh,
- 18:26Speaker 1: David Mann was going back and forth. That was that
- 18:29Speaker 1: that was in Atlanta and Atlanta you almost had to
- 18:32Speaker 1: carry me about it. And and then of course, you know,
- 18:36Speaker 1: you know, whenever I was on stage, they would always
- 18:39Speaker 1: put me with with my girl would be on me
- 18:44Speaker 1: the whole time. And the funniest thing, Uh sit there
- 18:49Speaker 1: and and then for us to just you know, you
- 18:51Speaker 1: know that banter piece. So I mean, like you gotta
- 18:54Speaker 1: have a sense of humor in life after its like
- 18:57Speaker 1: a medicine. So's when I laughed like I laughed because
- 19:01Speaker 1: I believe that this heating in it. So I'm just
- 19:03Speaker 1: breaking all right, I love it, don't give that was
- 19:06Speaker 1: the only thing that was missing in the biopic. You
- 19:09Speaker 1: really don't see that humorous sip. But like he says,
- 19:12Speaker 1: nay minutes, all you can do is put so much
- 19:14Speaker 1: in nathing minutes. But I'm just telling y'all, in real life,
- 19:18Speaker 1: he's special because he lives life. He shows life, and
- 19:22Speaker 1: he's an everyday guy. He walks in faith, but he
- 19:25Speaker 1: also walks into quality where life brings to him. The
- 19:27Speaker 1: table I'm talking about Bishop Marvin Staff. His movie is
- 19:31Speaker 1: going to be premiering on TV one August twenty one.
- 19:34Speaker 1: The Marvin Staff story never would have made it now
- 19:37Speaker 1: Elevate eight, Elevate entertaining. Now Substance came back in June.
- 19:44Speaker 1: You know what made it different and what made it
- 19:47Speaker 1: so unique? Substance, Well, Substance is different this simply because
- 19:52Speaker 1: it's on my own label, and reality is that being
- 19:55Speaker 1: on a record label for thirty years a major label,
- 19:59Speaker 1: being on Sony thirty years, Um, it's different because now
- 20:03Speaker 1: you run it, you own it. It is your responsibility
- 20:06Speaker 1: to take care everything. Before you know, the record coming
- 20:09Speaker 1: to give you a budget. You take that budget. Um,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you're going to studio or you go do a live record,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and then act you get to do that live record,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you turn it in. Once you turn it in, that's it,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, and then they tell you when you gotta
- 20:21Speaker 1: take pictures. They find the art person to do the
- 20:24Speaker 1: album covers and all this kind of stuff. So it's
- 20:27Speaker 1: real easy. Uh, it's like that when you go over right,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know. So I had to do all of that myself.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Had to make sure everything was done mixing, mastering, um,
- 20:38Speaker 1: photo shoots, Uh, find the art director. Uh, make sure
- 20:44Speaker 1: all of the songs are uh coded. Uh. It's just
- 20:50Speaker 1: a whole bunch of things that go along with me
- 20:52Speaker 1: and an owner that I didn't have to do just
- 20:55Speaker 1: being an artist. Um. But at the same token, the
- 20:58Speaker 1: blessing of it is that me an opportunity to learn
- 21:01Speaker 1: the whole other aspect, even I knew already, but to
- 21:04Speaker 1: learn the whole different area of the business that I
- 21:08Speaker 1: never had to do before, and it gave him in appreciation.
- 21:11Speaker 1: But those working behind the scenes at the record company, right,
- 21:15Speaker 1: you know things that they do because it's it's a
- 21:18Speaker 1: lot of work, but it's exciting because Uh, I'm my
- 21:22Speaker 1: own master now, right, what I mean, I'm not owned
- 21:25Speaker 1: by anyone. You know, I take care of me and um,
- 21:30Speaker 1: that's a great, great feeling. Man. So Substance is the
- 21:33Speaker 1: first of hopefully many on my own personal label. Um,
- 21:39Speaker 1: this is my fifteenth record. Man. Do you know that's
- 21:41Speaker 1: a lot of music. You know what I'm saying, That's
- 21:43Speaker 1: a lot of music. So you know, um, I'm excited
- 21:48Speaker 1: and looking forward the bigger, better, and grater. As we
- 21:51Speaker 1: close out the interviews, two things I want to bring up.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I could always talk about fear in this show, Overcoming fear.
- 21:56Speaker 1: You know, people tend to stay at the same job,
- 21:59Speaker 1: standing the same relation ship, fear of losing weight, fear
- 22:02Speaker 1: what their children might think of them. And you in
- 22:04Speaker 1: this interview, you talked about two things that fear could
- 22:07Speaker 1: have stopped you. Okay, fear could have stopped you from
- 22:10Speaker 1: starting your own company, leaving the record label you've been
- 22:13Speaker 1: over over thirty years, and fear could have stopped you
- 22:15Speaker 1: from moving from Grand Rapids to Fort Worth, Texas. Those
- 22:19Speaker 1: are two prominent things in this interview. I want to
- 22:21Speaker 1: remind people that they heard come out of this interview.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Can you in and say, how are we able to
- 22:29Speaker 1: overcome those dramatic moments in your life? And it was
- 22:33Speaker 1: never seamless, but much thought and much fate faith was
- 22:36Speaker 1: put into that process. So people who are listening watching
- 22:39Speaker 1: can use that same nuggets of information to mostly get
- 22:43Speaker 1: them over the hum Well. I think that that's what
- 22:45Speaker 1: they need to understand. You said it, you said it profuly.
- 22:48Speaker 1: You said, you know, fear it's a faith and and
- 22:51Speaker 1: and fear is literally the opposite of faith. Yes, you know,
- 22:55Speaker 1: and and and I just had enough faith. I've been
- 22:57Speaker 1: trusting God all these years and pretty much know the pushing,
- 23:02Speaker 1: the urging, um, the voice, the unctioning of God. And
- 23:06Speaker 1: once I made a decision to transition, and it took
- 23:10Speaker 1: some time. Trust me, it didn't just I didn't just
- 23:12Speaker 1: wake up in the morning say you know, I'm moving
- 23:13Speaker 1: to text right in a few years. And because it
- 23:18Speaker 1: was a struggle, because I was thinking about here this
- 23:21Speaker 1: this is key. I was thinking about all that I
- 23:24Speaker 1: was leaving, but I never thought about all that I
- 23:30Speaker 1: was going to receive in the future. And See, that's
- 23:34Speaker 1: why we stay stuck, because we're so busy looking at
- 23:37Speaker 1: what we have that we never think about what we
- 23:41Speaker 1: could have. Wow, and uh, I'm doing better now that
- 23:46Speaker 1: I was doing in Michigan. I'm happier now than I
- 23:50Speaker 1: ever was in Michigan, at least since the passing of
- 23:53Speaker 1: my life. Um. And I mean like it was just
- 23:58Speaker 1: it was a great decision. The church and Grand Rapids
- 24:00Speaker 1: is better now because they have a new pastor and
- 24:04Speaker 1: they're moving forward. This church is better because they have
- 24:06Speaker 1: a new pastor and they're moving forward. So it's just
- 24:10Speaker 1: man all the way around. It was a leap of faith.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And I came by myself. I didn't bring nobody with me.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I literally moved like by myself. Um, and when I
- 24:23Speaker 1: got here, I didn't know anybody. Uh. Now you know,
- 24:26Speaker 1: we're growing, we're establishing relationships with people. Um. We were
- 24:30Speaker 1: here six months and COVID hit. So then we was
- 24:32Speaker 1: in the house by ourselves, just me and the three
- 24:34Speaker 1: kids because they were afraid. They moved here and stayed
- 24:37Speaker 1: with me for three, uh maybe six months before they
- 24:41Speaker 1: all decided to venture back to the places that they
- 24:45Speaker 1: were at. So I mean, like, you know, you just
- 24:47Speaker 1: gotta you gotta, you gotta jump. Absolutely, absolutely, he's Bishop.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Marvin Sapp never would have made it the best of me.
- 24:57Speaker 1: It's own independent record label. Now more importantly, August, that's
- 25:01Speaker 1: a Sunday one of this Mark never would have made
- 25:06Speaker 1: it the Marvel's app story. You gotta watch it. You
- 25:08Speaker 1: gotta watch it because I learned. And also it's it's
- 25:11Speaker 1: a moments, it's fine active, but he appears in there.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm not gonna tell you how, but he drops in
- 25:16Speaker 1: there dropping those nuggets. And I loved it because I
- 25:20Speaker 1: came from the hood of community just like him, and
- 25:22Speaker 1: my family with the McDonald family, and somehow my mom, man,
- 25:27Speaker 1: she just held it down like your mom. You know.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It was all kind of activity that wasn't good around us.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And we had she had six daughters and two boys
- 25:36Speaker 1: including me. That was nine kids. So but when we
- 25:39Speaker 1: moved out of the neighborhood, the neighborhood seemed like it
- 25:41Speaker 1: just collapsed. So I know what story you're telling about
- 25:45Speaker 1: your mom her strength in respect can cause other people
- 25:50Speaker 1: who are not on that path to stay there just
- 25:53Speaker 1: long enough, just to keep the evil out of the house.
- 25:56Speaker 1: And that's what she did. And I really appreciated the
- 25:59Speaker 1: story you was able to tell about her, But more importantly,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I appreciate you sharing your story August one on TV one,
- 26:06Speaker 1: the Marvis Staff story. Appreciate your Bishop. Thank you. We
- 26:10Speaker 1: talked soon, all right. If you want to hear or
- 26:12Speaker 1: see any of these interviews, please go to Money Making
- 26:14Speaker 1: Conversation dot com. I'm with Sean McDonald. I am your host.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Keep winning.
