- 0:00This episode includes discussion of childhood sexual abuse,
- 0:04exploitation, and addiction, shared as part of a story of
- 0:07healing and hope. Listener discretion is advised. Please take care
- 0:11of yourself while listening. If he
- 0:15did it for me, he can do it for them. There are people dying.
- 0:19I'm blessed to be here. I say it all the time. And I'm not
- 0:22just saying it. I'm humbled because I shouldn't even be
- 0:26alive, yet I am.
- 0:30Every one of us has a story about someone who showed up when it mattered
- 0:34most. I'm Johan, and this is Neighbourly, a
- 0:37podcast about the ordinary ways people show extraordinary care.
- 0:42Every other week, Shannon Steves sits down with someone who's
- 0:46lived that out. Real stories of faith, kindness,
- 0:50and community in action. So grab your coffee and let's
- 0:53join Shannon at the table.
- 0:58Okay. Well, good morning, Rosemary. I am so
- 1:01excited just to be on the podcast with you today.
- 1:05We've known each other for not super long, but you've just
- 1:09been somebody that, as I've gotten to know you, has encouraged
- 1:12and inspired me. And I'm really excited just for you to
- 1:16be on and. And to share some of your testimony and the way
- 1:20God has worked in your life. So thank you for being here
- 1:24today. Thank you for having me, Shannon. Yeah. Before
- 1:27we dive into your story, we always start off with an
- 1:31icebreaker question of who was a neighbor that
- 1:35you'll never forget, good or bad?
- 1:38Okay. What first came to mind was
- 1:42a couple that would constantly throw their garbage over to
- 1:46my yard, and we're talking all sorts of
- 1:49garbage. Oh, my. So that was hard. That was
- 1:53many, many years ago. And it just stuck with me because it didn't matter
- 1:57what I did, how I. You know, I. And I just got to the point
- 2:00where I ignored it. Right. Did you try to talk to them and, like, ask
- 2:03them why they're doing this? I did. I did. But
- 2:07I also wasn't living my best life at that time,
- 2:11so it came to a point where I was just, you know, I. I didn't
- 2:14care because I didn't want to get into it. So. Yeah. Oh, that is. That
- 2:17is memorable. It was. It is memorable.
- 2:21Not something you forget. Before we really get into things, can you just
- 2:25share a little bit about your life right now and just the different
- 2:29ways you're involved in community? Yeah.
- 2:32Okay. So I. I am, number one. I
- 2:36am a child of God. I am a mother to four children.
- 2:40Well, five, actually. I'm also a foster parent, so I'm able
- 2:44to open up my heart and my home
- 2:48in a different capacity. But it's still being the same. Right. But
- 2:51it does look different. I am also, I have a role
- 2:55here at Inner City Youth Alive with the
- 2:58community ministry team. For the last three years. I'm working my
- 3:02third year here now I'm out in the community. I go out
- 3:06into the thick of it. There is some scheduled things I do,
- 3:09but for the most part, one day can look very different from
- 3:13the next. Yeah. And for those who don't know, can
- 3:17you just tell us a little bit, what is inner city Youth Alive? What do
- 3:20you guys do there? Yeah. So how I would explain it in my own
- 3:24words is it is a lighthouse in the middle of the North End. There's
- 3:28several little areas and pockets of inner city Youth Alive. It started
- 3:31off primarily for youth and it still is. We have
- 3:35wonderful drop in staff from Monday to Thursday where our
- 3:39children in this community are able to come to drop in,
- 3:43feel safe. And also, I don't know a lot about it because I don't work
- 3:47in that area, but from what I know, there's also the option of
- 3:51it's called talk time, which they're able to learn about the Lord
- 3:55should they choose to. Now if the, if the children don't choose to,
- 3:58they're not told to leave. So it's, it is number one, it's a safe place
- 4:02for our children in this community. And then, yeah, there's
- 4:06different projects going on. We have Step Up Construction
- 4:09that actually go out into the community and have contracts with people,
- 4:14some bigger city companies and some smaller,
- 4:17just private households. The group at Step up actually
- 4:21just did my backsplash in my kitchen. Wow,
- 4:25super. I'm super blessed. And like,
- 4:28truthfully, what would have been like a $3,000 job
- 4:32was a gift. And like, I just want to praise
- 4:35and just lift up Step Up Construction. And if anybody's listening
- 4:39and they know or they don't know of Step Up Construction,
- 4:43please look us up. And there's always room for contracts and they're
- 4:46looking for work. So. Yeah, that's so awesome. I
- 4:50met a couple weeks ago, Tom. Is he the one who oversees
- 4:54Step Up? Yes. Yeah. And I was like, this is so cool.
- 4:58As you know, know a social enterprise in the community,
- 5:01being able to, you know, employ youth is kind of what he was sharing
- 5:06or youth that are, are growing into adults and that work experience
- 5:09and that just like relationship. That's so huge. It
- 5:13is so huge. I didn't speak a lot about community ministry, so
- 5:17I'll just quickly talk about that. Yeah. There's four of us that have
- 5:20that role and it looks different for all four, but for me,
- 5:24I went into it not knowing again what
- 5:28one day is going to look like. But the Lord has definitely set in my
- 5:32path a specific ministry, and that is to
- 5:36sit and to give a hand of help to
- 5:40women who are struggling with addiction, not just addiction,
- 5:43struggling within the system of cfs. Some real
- 5:48huge concerns I'm able to advocate in court.
- 5:51I'm not a lawyer, obviously, I'm not a, you know,
- 5:54counselor, but God just really has me building
- 5:57relationships with women who trust me. And that's huge because
- 6:01trust is really hard for. For a lot of our. A lot of our
- 6:05families. So. Yeah. Wow. Thank you for sharing that.
- 6:09And I. I would imagine that a huge part of that trust
- 6:13comes from, you know, some of your own lived experience in being able
- 6:16to truly relate. Right. And understand some of what
- 6:20they're going through. Yeah. Can you, I guess, kind of going back
- 6:24to a little bit of just your journey, and you mentioned a
- 6:28previous time. You know, where does it start for you, I guess as
- 6:31a youth or a young adult with your story? Well,
- 6:35number one, I'm a product of a broken home. So I
- 6:39had just been living with my mom,
- 6:43and respectfully speaking, my mom and my biological
- 6:46dad and my stepdad, we've all found healing throughout our relationship.
- 6:50But at the end of the day, I suffered. I went through a lot of
- 6:54abuse, sexual abuse at the hands of my
- 6:58uncle, actually. And I had that
- 7:02because my innocence was taken from me, which we see a lot
- 7:06with families with children. What happens then is
- 7:10we lose our sense of identity before we even get to know who we are.
- 7:14So that's what happened to me and ended up going out onto
- 7:17the streets. I did spend some time in cfs, so I was.
- 7:21And forgive me if I jump around a bit, but what happened with me is
- 7:25I didn't open up about the abuse until a little later on. And when I
- 7:29did, I wasn't believed. And we hear a lot of that, too. Children are just
- 7:32not believed. And there's nothing worse than
- 7:36finding the courage to speak up only to be shut
- 7:40down. So when that happened, I kind of just gave
- 7:44up. And what that looked like for me was, okay,
- 7:47I. And I am going to be raw here. When I talk, I'm just going
- 7:51to go out. And I was introduced to people that taught me how
- 7:55to do things such as stand on the corner and prostitute,
- 7:59and that's exactly what I did. I was 12. I was 12
- 8:03when I took my first crack. Hoot. So I started to
- 8:07smoke crack at 12 that obviously
- 8:11caused a lot of
- 8:15confusion. And I
- 8:18went on my years from 12 to,
- 8:22I want to say 20, 21, smoking crack throughout those years,
- 8:26rather than staying stuck in this part, I just want to say
- 8:30that I got out of it. Praise be to God, I got out of it.
- 8:35But I didn't just get out of it and find healing so fast.
- 8:38So the testimony continues. I had to learn how to
- 8:42forgive. I had to learn who I was. I
- 8:46actually had to learn how to think again because
- 8:49a lot of cognitive stuff happened right when you're.
- 8:53When you're 12 and your frontal lobe is still growing and you're smoking
- 8:57hard drugs, it was affected. So, yeah, I
- 9:01was getting to know myself at 21 years old, which isn't
- 9:04horrible. So essentially I got out of it
- 9:08a lot earlier than a lot of the people that I was out with.
- 9:12They're either rest in peace, like they're either passed away
- 9:15or still out there or in jail. Wow. Thank you
- 9:19for sharing that and being raw and honest about
- 9:23what you've walked through. And I'm just honored to sit
- 9:27hear that story. That's incredible what you've been
- 9:30through. But like you alluded to, there have been a time
- 9:34or times where God met you. Can you talk to us
- 9:38a little bit about what that has looked like and how what those
- 9:42turning points were, I guess, in your life? Yes,
- 9:45well, I actually was approached.
- 9:49So through the years of me being on the streets and back then, it
- 9:53was so prominent. We would always be on the corners. Right. Nowadays you
- 9:57don't really see it. It's all online, it's hidden. But through
- 10:00those years, there was a bus called the Love Lives Here bus. And
- 10:04the ministry is still alive and well, but they have a trailer. Back
- 10:08then, on the weekends they would drive around and they
- 10:12would. They would pursue us gently. Okay.
- 10:15And so this is more than a story, but this is actually something
- 10:19that when I. When I talk about, I'm just reminded of
- 10:23God's goodness and how important we as his
- 10:26hands and feet are. Because if
- 10:30that woman, I don't remember her name, didn't ever really
- 10:34see her again, but if she wouldn't have got off of the bus.
- 10:38So anyways, what they did was they would park the bus,
- 10:42cold weather, they'd bring hot chocolate, chili, whatever, to
- 10:46the corners, to where we would stand, and they would
- 10:50try to talk to us. Wow. So that's just kind of like a little bit
- 10:53of what that looked like. Now, this one particular weekend,
- 10:57I was upset, I was angry. I wasn't getting picked up the johns were driving
- 11:01around, and they were just being jerks. And so this
- 11:05one lady, she was pursuing me, right? And
- 11:08I kept telling her to f off, like, leave me alone,
- 11:12lady. Like, you're ruining, you know, whatever business I thought I had.
- 11:16And again, I'm talking just really raw. I'm not glorifying it.
- 11:19So I'm thinking to myself, like, leave me alone. And I told her,
- 11:23right? I was. I was just rude. I was mean. I was. I was not
- 11:26thinking about her. I was thinking about myself. But just
- 11:30as Christ pursues us, she.
- 11:34She stood back like she was, you know, at. You know,
- 11:37she. I could tell she was using some discernment, now that I look back.
- 11:41But she would come back. She would come back. Are you ready for prayer? Can
- 11:45we pray or not even that. Like, can you. You want a
- 11:49sandwich? So this one particular time,
- 11:53back to that time, I said, fine. Like, I'll take a
- 11:56sandwich. She's like, are you cold? And
- 12:00so I went on the bus, and they prayed for me. And so
- 12:04when they were praying for me, I wish I could say that after
- 12:08that night, I didn't ever look back. That's not often the
- 12:11situation. But that was a seed planted.
- 12:14And so I felt different.
- 12:18And it was like my mind, right, because the battle always starts
- 12:22in the mind. My mind started to think things. I started to
- 12:26have different thoughts, like, oh, these people actually took their
- 12:29time to pray with me. And that prayer just felt good.
- 12:34And it was more than just a feeling. It was in my core. That
- 12:37was one of the times that the Lord met me through somebody else.
- 12:42I've also had a radical encounter with the Holy
- 12:45Spirit. And so that particular time was just
- 12:49so beautiful. And several years after,
- 12:53I actually volunteered on that same bus, and
- 12:57for about three or four years, I would volunteer, I got to know Heather
- 13:00Barefoot. She's actually the director of Love Lives Here Ministry
- 13:04and her husband Ted, and the people who drove the bus. Now, what
- 13:08they did was each encounter
- 13:12that they would make with us girls on the street, they would document
- 13:16it. They would write it down. So I was able to go back
- 13:20after I got, like. Got to know them. They took me
- 13:23back to the late 1990s, slash, early
- 13:272000s, and I was able to read, like, three
- 13:31recordings of when they would talk to me and how they
- 13:35would pray behind the scenes.
- 13:38Like, come on, right? How. How
- 13:42do we. How do we deny that the Lord isn't real?
- 13:46Wow. If that's not an encouragement to people, like,
- 13:50I don't know what is. Because you said it. He's like, it wasn't a
- 13:54light switch after that first, first, you know, prayer, that first encounter,
- 13:58it was seeds being planted over time
- 14:01and, you know, someone saying, yes, being obedient to what
- 14:05God had called them to do and asked them to do, and just show up
- 14:09on the bus and now,
- 14:13like, look at what he's done in your life since then. It's
- 14:16unbelievable. It is, yeah. We could end it there and be
- 14:19okay, but I have more questions. Okay, so
- 14:23you, you mentioned serving on with that ministry, with that team
- 14:27on the bus. How has, you know, what you've been through and walked through, then
- 14:31connected into wanting to continue serving
- 14:35community? Like, how did it go from that to then kind of here, where you're
- 14:38at now? Well, the more I get closer
- 14:42to the Lord, which is a daily thing, the more I
- 14:46see there are people dying physically, spiritually,
- 14:50the most. And how can I.
- 14:54How can I live out my life to glorify God
- 14:58if I don't choose to try to reach the lost?
- 15:02Because if he did it for me, he will do it
- 15:07for you or whoever's listening or whoever's out there right
- 15:10now. If. If he did it for me, he can do it for them, he
- 15:14can do it for. And we're not even just talking about addicts. We're talking about
- 15:18people who may have bondage in other ways.
- 15:22Any kind of idol in your life. There are people dying.
- 15:27And so, yeah, I. I'm
- 15:30blessed to be here. I say it all the time. And I'm not just saying
- 15:34it. I'm humbled because I shouldn't even be alive
- 15:39yet I am. Yeah. How did you
- 15:43get to icya? Because I know
- 15:46there's significance in, like, the neighborhood that you're physically
- 15:50in through work. And part of your story. How did you get
- 15:54there? So for the last 15.
- 15:5715 years, I worked in social services, right.
- 16:01So I was in group homes and I was sitting at work,
- 16:05looked at, you know, actually somebody mentioned inner city
- 16:08youth alive at church not too long before I. I was
- 16:12online and I happened to just come across the job
- 16:16posting. And so I applied not too long
- 16:20after. And it was actually a long process. Like, I didn't just get hired. They
- 16:24interviewed me once, interviewed me twice, interviewed me a third
- 16:27time. Now. The thing about ICY is I used to live in this
- 16:31area, the North End. I would walk by this
- 16:35building and wonder what it was. I didn't
- 16:38ever talk to anybody, but I would walk by literally on my way to the
- 16:42street corner. And so. Wow, right?
- 16:46So here I am, and I'm still wowed. I'm still wowed at
- 16:50how now I'm on the other side, not because
- 16:54I'm better, but because now there's
- 16:57that scripture that comes to mind. We are overcome by the blood of the lamb
- 17:00and the word of our testimony. So he needs, he needs to use us.
- 17:05He wants to use us. And so, yeah, so that's what happened. So I
- 17:09got hired September 2022. It was
- 17:12just six months after actually, so it wasn't. Oh, I
- 17:16applied and I got it. I guess you are in a space
- 17:20where you're quite literally walking with people who are
- 17:24going through some stuff, going through challenges, like you said,
- 17:28addiction and whatnot. I think sometimes
- 17:32we as people can
- 17:34overcomplicate what it means to just love
- 17:38people and serve people. Like, I think sometimes we think we
- 17:42need to have all this experience and training and do all this stuff.
- 17:46And don't get me wrong, training's great, but we don't have to have a
- 17:49degree to go and love people. We don't have to
- 17:53have had a five year career doing xyz. Like,
- 17:57we just have to show up. Right. And I guess, can you speak to what
- 18:01that is like? Not to say you don't have experience, but to the
- 18:04ordinary person who maybe doesn't know how
- 18:08to just say yes to what God is or maybe God's putting something
- 18:12on their heart. Like what it. Like what would you, I guess, nudge them
- 18:16towards if they're in that place of like, I don't know if I
- 18:19really can. I don't know if I really can love that way. Like, what would
- 18:23you tell them? Yeah. So because
- 18:28God qualifies us to do his work,
- 18:32Right. Paul talks about it a lot in the New Testament.
- 18:35It's not supposed to be rainbows and butterflies either. Yeah, there's going to be some,
- 18:39some hard times. There's going to be some times where. And there are
- 18:43a lot of times in my life, especially now, the last
- 18:47three years, I've had more battle than ever. But that actually
- 18:51means I'm on the right, I'm on the right track,
- 18:54not because God wants me to suffer, but because
- 18:58we do have an enemy. And so things pop up.
- 19:02But yes, I would say to those that might
- 19:06be feeling like they have something to give, that they
- 19:10want to help because we all should be right. That's why we're
- 19:14called the church. We're called the body for a reason.
- 19:17And none of us are going to be called to do the same thing.
- 19:22But I would just say trust in the Lord. Back to What I was saying,
- 19:25trust in the Lord. Lean on his understanding, not
- 19:29your own. Yeah, yeah, that's so
- 19:33good. And you already mentioned where I wanted to kind
- 19:37of ask more about was the church. Where does the church
- 19:41fit into all this? I know you see a lot of
- 19:45needs and, you know, people are going through things and they need
- 19:48just practical support sometimes or just, you know,
- 19:52friendship. Where do you see the church fitting into
- 19:56serving the community? Or how do you see it, maybe is a better question.
- 20:01Well, I'm going to just speak from my heart, from
- 20:05what I see. And so just ahead of time,
- 20:09if there are people who may not like it or agree or disagree,
- 20:13that's fine. But thankfully I'm on the podcast, so.
- 20:18Right. I think that we
- 20:22have come a long way as a church,
- 20:26but not nearly far as we need to be.
- 20:29And so when we were talking about not too long ago about Care
- 20:33Portal and about how many churches in Winnipeg, so I know there are a couple
- 20:37more churches that have been added on. Right. But when
- 20:40we think about all the churches in this city,
- 20:44there's a lot. I don't know the exact number. I'm sure you probably know more.
- 20:47I think it's somewhere around 300 or so. Yeah. Right.
- 20:50Okay. Versus. So 300 churches
- 20:54versus how many are on the care portal? Yeah. 10 to
- 20:5812 or so. That's a concern. That's a concern. And I can say it because
- 21:01I don't work for Care Portal, so nobody can get mad at you guys.
- 21:06They can come at me. But I think that's Care
- 21:10Portal alone. But, like, in general, when I see a lot of
- 21:14the churches in this area, so in the inner city, just
- 21:18to make a positive turn, here they are involved. Right. So I also
- 21:21run a food bank out of my church. I'm not the only one who runs
- 21:24a food bank. We have food banks out of Living Word Temple
- 21:28just down the street. Springs Inner City. So we are
- 21:32making an effort for things like that. I do think that when it comes
- 21:36to basic understanding and relationship building,
- 21:40we really need more work. Yeah.
- 21:44And I think that's such a good point because it.
- 21:49I think I've talked about this with someone on a previous episode.
- 21:53It can be sometimes easy to, like, give stuff or do the things,
- 21:56but when it comes to, like sitting with somebody and just like being
- 22:00present in their story, that can be where we
- 22:04need some improvement as a, you know, as the church. And what
- 22:08do you think that could look like? I guess, based on what you see, what
- 22:11are some ways people in churches or just church in
- 22:15general Can. Can do better at that. Relational.
- 22:19Just caring for people. Well, I think,
- 22:23again, speaking for my home church, and
- 22:28hopefully it doesn't sound biased, but we
- 22:31do sit. We'll sit with people. I think that,
- 22:35number one, the second we think we have an us
- 22:39versus them mentality, we're already losing
- 22:43also because of this whole truth and reconciliation
- 22:46thing. I do think that the church,
- 22:50many churches do want to reconcile,
- 22:54but it's done in kind of
- 22:58still kind of keeping people victimized.
- 23:03And again, this is just my take. I'm not into,
- 23:06like, I'm not trying to speak for anybody else.
- 23:10I think that there's that part of trying to keep people victimized
- 23:14still in that victim state, as well as
- 23:18not educating ourselves enough about that. And what
- 23:22the residential schoolings did, what that really.
- 23:26What the impact really is. Yeah. So I think
- 23:29that there's like, different. It's like a different spectrum.
- 23:33It's from one extreme to the next, in my view.
- 23:36Yeah, that's, I think, really
- 23:40insightful to think about that us and them mentality.
- 23:45And, you know, you bring such a deep understanding of
- 23:49dignity, I think, in the way that you serve and the way you love
- 23:52people, I guess. What do you wish more people
- 23:55understood about those who are facing
- 23:59addiction or homelessness or some other significant
- 24:02crisis? Well, what
- 24:06my hope would be and what my prayer
- 24:10is, is. And we're, I guess we're talking more. I'm.
- 24:14I'm speaking more to believers, is
- 24:17that we, number one, get off of our high horse.
- 24:22And I mean that out of love, because I've been on a high
- 24:26horse too, a few times, and I've been knocked down, I've been humbled.
- 24:29And I think when we see the big picture,
- 24:34where trauma comes, what trauma causes, it looks different
- 24:38for everybody. And again, like I said earlier, addiction
- 24:42doesn't just mean drugs and alcohol. Addiction's living up in
- 24:46the suburbs with lots of money that, you know,
- 24:49people are gambling, people are addicted to pornography.
- 24:53We're talking about rich people as well. And so when we
- 24:57have an understanding that it's also us
- 25:01and it just looks different, then maybe they could
- 25:05see an addict on the street or somebody homeless and be like, wow,
- 25:09there's really not much of a difference between the two of us. Right. Yeah.
- 25:12That's so good. We could talk a lot about addiction too. But it's
- 25:16that the problem, you know, the stuff we see, the drugs or
- 25:20the alcohol or the pornography or whatever, the stuff, that's not
- 25:24really the issue. It's deeper within and
- 25:27there's likely trauma there and some wounding and. And healing.
- 25:31That really is needing to happen. And I think when we
- 25:35humanize people and really, truly just see someone,
- 25:39it's like, oh, yeah, you know, I. I see you in
- 25:43me, too. And like, I'm. I'm. I just want to be here,
- 25:48wrap it up here towards the end. I guess
- 25:51one question I have for you is when things feel
- 25:55heavy in work or in life, I guess, what gives
- 25:59you hope for community? What. What keeps you
- 26:02going? Okay, what keeps me going?
- 26:07Seeing women who are choosing to show up
- 26:11for themselves every day, no matter what that looks like. But
- 26:14the. The successes, the victories that come out of that, and
- 26:18seeing families reunited like children being brought
- 26:22back to their families. I have a specific
- 26:26friend, longtime friend, actually, who just got through
- 26:30treatment. She's doing great. She is.
- 26:34She's choosing to get through all that stuff. We were just talking about trauma. She's
- 26:37choosing to dig at those roots of trauma so that
- 26:41she can leave a better legacy for her children. And it
- 26:45shows, right? There's. There's evidence of God in her
- 26:49life. She sees it. She acknowledges it, and. And
- 26:52she knows. She also knows that that doesn't mean things are going to be perfect,
- 26:56but just to see that light switch go
- 27:00on in her spirit, that's
- 27:03encouraging. So, yeah, it's not all bad.
- 27:07Yeah. Yeah. Is there anything that
- 27:11you feel it's on your heart to share that I haven't given you the opportunity
- 27:15to say yet? Anything. You just feel
- 27:18what to say? Well, I said a lot. I think that.
- 27:22Yeah, I'm just thankful. I'm thankful that you thought of me to bring me
- 27:26on. And again, anytime I can share
- 27:30what God has done in my life and I can actually
- 27:34speak about how it happened or whatnot,
- 27:39I pray that that gives hope to people who
- 27:43knows where you're at in your life. But, yeah, just. Just to encourage people who
- 27:46are listening that God is alive and
- 27:50he's real. He's alive and he. He wants to move in our lives.
- 27:55It's beautiful. Rosemary, your story is such a
- 27:59reminder that extraordinary care often looks like just
- 28:03showing up, loving people, and just being
- 28:06faithful to where God has placed you. And so thank you.
- 28:10Thank you for being here and thank you for sharing your story. Thank you. Thank
- 28:13you so much. The stories we share here remind us
- 28:17that care doesn't have to be perfect to be powerful.
- 28:21It just has to be present. Neighbourly is an initiative of
