- 0:11Speaker 1: best life. These are my passions and that's what I'm
- 0:14Speaker 1: going to do for you. I want you to stop
- 0:16Speaker 1: tripping over small challenges I really do, and prepare to
- 0:19Speaker 1: rise above the bigger obstacles to life. You will present
- 0:21Speaker 1: to you my next My next guest. She's she's laying
- 0:25Speaker 1: you can't see, but she's like very relaxed. Uh who
- 0:29Speaker 1: was an eighteen year veteran and stand up comedies that
- 0:32Speaker 1: started doing statard back in ninety two death comedy Jawn
- 0:34Speaker 1: BT comed views. So she's talking to a I would
- 0:37Speaker 1: like to say, a guy who knows a little thing
- 0:39Speaker 1: to do but stand up. Look at I couldn't do
- 0:42Speaker 1: it and Michelle was No strangers Netflix subscribers, the Netflix
- 0:48Speaker 1: films Someone Great, Always Be, My Being, Always Be My Maybe,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and Netflix series Rushing and Doll Tales of the City,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and continued appearances including the Hosting and Netflix Where Out
- 1:00Speaker 1: of the Competition series The Circle which is renewed for
- 1:03Speaker 1: a second season. She's talented and she's beautiful, and she's
- 1:06Speaker 1: starting her new Netflix stand up comedy special, Michelle Bauto.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Otavia Beutopia. Dad, are you a counting? You
- 1:15Speaker 1: listen all the things like I gotta start bringing W
- 1:18Speaker 1: nine to W tense is interview? Well, you know when
- 1:21Speaker 1: you're busy and you're talented, like you just got renewed
- 1:25Speaker 1: your a BT plus show got renewed. Correct, Yes, Now
- 1:31Speaker 1: I saw the special first. It was first of all,
- 1:33Speaker 1: you know what they do with Netflix. Uh, they sent
- 1:35Speaker 1: me an account of putting my patchword. It was on Saturday,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and I was in my bed and I started watching
- 1:42Speaker 1: and someone when people start making me laugh, I have
- 1:45Speaker 1: to sit up. I'll sit up. And you made me
- 1:49Speaker 1: sit up. And then you made me stand up, Michelle
- 1:51Speaker 1: because I was laughing. And so so first of all,
- 1:55Speaker 1: let me let me lay down. Everybody know about Michelle Hill.
- 1:58Speaker 1: See when when you're really talented comic and she knows this,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you hit turns hit you. If you say it to
- 2:04Speaker 1: a normal street person, they might be offended. They be
- 2:07Speaker 1: offended by but stuff like you silly, you stupid, you're
- 2:11Speaker 1: you crazy? You're out to control your food. See if
- 2:15Speaker 1: a statup comic, who's a real stand up comic, here's
- 2:18Speaker 1: those statements. They know they kicking, but you're funny, you
- 2:26Speaker 1: ought to control You're crazy. Thank you. I appreciate that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I really really do, and honestly like and you know
- 2:35Speaker 1: this better than like anybody, especially since you've been in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the game for so long. There's always this thing where
- 2:39Speaker 1: people don't think women are funny. It's just like, okay,
- 2:42Speaker 1: And it's sort of like what I was growing up,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and I was the only black kid in um a
- 2:47Speaker 1: few of the schools I went to. My dad was like,
- 2:49Speaker 1: you have to be the best because you're gonna stand
- 2:51Speaker 1: out whether you want it or not. And so, starting
- 2:54Speaker 1: stand up in two thousand one, for the first five
- 2:56Speaker 1: or six years, everywhere I went, I was like the
- 2:58Speaker 1: only female on a show, and it's just like, you
- 3:01Speaker 1: have to be the best. And so I remember Will Sylvans,
- 3:06Speaker 1: a hilariousation American comedian in New York, was like, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what spot you get on the show.
- 3:13Speaker 1: A lot of people like the third spot, the force
- 3:15Speaker 1: by everyone has their favorite song to go first. He's like,
- 3:18Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Take any spot and make it hard for
- 3:20Speaker 1: someone to follow you. So I was like, bet, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: those are the lessons that I think we need as
- 3:26Speaker 1: comedians or anybody, like walking into a room or like
- 3:29Speaker 1: a zoom meeting or like pitch and stuff. It's like
- 3:31Speaker 1: the question isn't how do I become popular? How do
- 3:34Speaker 1: I get more followers? How do I make money? It's like,
- 3:37Speaker 1: if you are talented, the money will follow. Well, you know, ugree,
- 3:43Speaker 1: because in this business we can't get caught up in
- 3:46Speaker 1: the slot in the show. Well, first of all, if
- 3:49Speaker 1: you can't handle the slot, that slot won't be yours. Yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 1: because everybody in the stand up comedy game is get
- 3:55Speaker 1: gunning for the funny person. And then you're an attractive woman.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You so, And I can say this a lot of
- 4:02Speaker 1: times people will be kind of condescending. Oh he's getting
- 4:07Speaker 1: because she's cute or she last because she's a woman.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So how did you overcome those negatives? Well that's the
- 4:14Speaker 1: thing too, write like I worked all the circuits. I worked, um,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know, the clubs with like my wife and kids,
- 4:22Speaker 1: sitcom stude, I did the chilling circuit, I did the
- 4:25Speaker 1: gay clubs, and everyone's just like it's a woman, or
- 4:30Speaker 1: well she's like what she gotta say about this experience?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Or she cute? How funny can she be? And that's
- 4:36Speaker 1: the thing that going by to what my dad said,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you know, he also said, never worked for a thank you.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So I said, okay, I'm not gonna work for a
- 4:44Speaker 1: thank you. I'm just to leave it. You're welcome, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: so all that should decided. It doesn't matter how you look,
- 4:49Speaker 1: it's it's what is inside. And so I know that
- 4:53Speaker 1: I have a story in my heart that you won't enjoy,
- 4:55Speaker 1: either you're on board or or not. So yeah, I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I just want to make it. I just want to
- 5:01Speaker 1: make it so hard. I just want to tickle people.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Like you know how you always focus on the one
- 5:05Speaker 1: person that's not laughing. I'm like, I'm here for that person,
- 5:08Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I don't focus on that idiot.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I really don't. You're not gonna bring down my vibe
- 5:14Speaker 1: because but you're right, you can stand the comment is
- 5:17Speaker 1: interesting because you can control the side of a room,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you can put froll the middle, and it's beautiful when
- 5:23Speaker 1: you control the entire room. Yes and so, and the
- 5:26Speaker 1: goal is really the control in any percent of the
- 5:29Speaker 1: room because you're not gonna make everybody laugh. That's just life.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You don't know what's wrong with that person. They might
- 5:34Speaker 1: be having a bad day. I just got robed. Car
- 5:37Speaker 1: might not start and they know when they go outside. Yeah, yea,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you never know. And that's really important lesson to that
- 5:45Speaker 1: we all have to know is that you never know
- 5:47Speaker 1: what someone's going through. I mean, you know what happened
- 5:50Speaker 1: with Chadwick. I'm just like you guys. We have to
- 5:53Speaker 1: be nicer to each other on the internet. Don't come
- 5:55Speaker 1: for someone's looks. You do not know what we are
- 5:58Speaker 1: going through. So that's what I really try to hopefully
- 6:02Speaker 1: I did with the Special two was yeah, it could
- 6:04Speaker 1: be funny, Yeah I got stories. Yeah I'm going through ship.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, we have to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be kind to each other. Otherwise it's all for not well.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I agree, and she's staying Chadwick Boseman, that's who she's referencing,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and just in somebody's under a rock. Don't know who
- 6:19Speaker 1: who you're talking about, but rock fell on their head. Okay,
- 6:23Speaker 1: now let's say let's talk about your standard specials. It's
- 6:26Speaker 1: own Netflix, Uh start September twenty night, Um, why. First
- 6:32Speaker 1: of all, one of the Pikes, one of my all
- 6:33Speaker 1: time favorite people. She's one of the EPs on her
- 6:36Speaker 1: production company. Tell us about that. Yes, so Wanda owns
- 6:40Speaker 1: Push the Productions UM and she's partners with Paige Horowitz,
- 6:44Speaker 1: who was an amazing producer who did UM last Comic
- 6:47Speaker 1: Standing All the year she did. Tiffany has his special
- 6:50Speaker 1: Fortune Feamsters, and so they're just like a dynamic duo
- 6:55Speaker 1: of just female empowerment who have been in the game
- 6:58Speaker 1: long enough to know how to set you up. UM well.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And you know, I've already been a fan, such a
- 7:07Speaker 1: fan of Wanda for so long because not only is
- 7:10Speaker 1: she funny, she's so smart, she's so intelligent, she's so thoughtful.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So those are the people I want to work with.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And I felt like I was in really good company,
- 7:17Speaker 1: which is great because an our you are leaving yourself
- 7:21Speaker 1: vulnerable to a lot of things and sometimes overwhelming, much
- 7:24Speaker 1: like buying your first car, getting married, people, sometimes praying
- 7:27Speaker 1: your vulnerabilities and just like you should do this because
- 7:29Speaker 1: a lot of people do this. You should do that,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you should get this venue because this is what they do.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And it's like, no, man, these two women were like
- 7:36Speaker 1: what do you want? What? How are we going to
- 7:38Speaker 1: showcase your personality? What is a night out for you?
- 7:41Speaker 1: And it's really nice working with people who understand you
- 7:46Speaker 1: and celebrate you, not tolerate you. And that's important that
- 7:49Speaker 1: you say that. I wanted to talk about the specially
- 7:52Speaker 1: a little bit more detail because of your gifts, your
- 7:56Speaker 1: ability to wait for the moment each to allow that
- 8:01Speaker 1: moment to build. You know, the value of your facial expressions,
- 8:06Speaker 1: the look, the cutting of the eye, that the sneaky grin,
- 8:11Speaker 1: you know, which makes you in wonderful actress too. I
- 8:14Speaker 1: can't act. That's why that's a blessing. It's a blessing
- 8:19Speaker 1: about that ability to wait for the moment. Man, I
- 8:24Speaker 1: think that just comes with time. You know, you don't
- 8:27Speaker 1: know that. You don't know you can do that until
- 8:30Speaker 1: you've tested and tried, test and try. You could do
- 8:34Speaker 1: it in front of your first gig for two thousand,
- 8:36Speaker 1: You could do it at that bar show for ten people.
- 8:40Speaker 1: You know. I think comedy especially, you know, we get
- 8:45Speaker 1: stuck in the script and it's just like, if there's
- 8:48Speaker 1: a side of you that wants to color outside the box,
- 8:51Speaker 1: trust it. It's not gonna work. The first time, but
- 8:53Speaker 1: nobody plays chopin the first time they played piano. You
- 8:56Speaker 1: gotta keep away and figure it out. So I feel
- 8:59Speaker 1: like that efflen comes with time. And also, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 1: comedy being a woman in her forties, like all this
- 9:07Speaker 1: stuff is like I am tired of trying to fit
- 9:09Speaker 1: in someone else's world, Like, come to mind, this is
- 9:12Speaker 1: my world, Utopia. You want to celebrate great you don't.
- 9:15Speaker 1: There's something else for you on Netflix. There's a lot
- 9:17Speaker 1: of ship Go watch your childler show. Welcome to Potopia.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I can. I can only follow that title. What you
- 9:24Speaker 1: just say. Give me a wrap up here, and I
- 9:27Speaker 1: want to wrap up on a hot note with you.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Welcome to Patopia, September twenty night, Netflix, Starwing the Incredible Michelle. Michelle,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I'm gona tell you that when they when they told
- 9:36Speaker 1: me that you had a comedy special, I went, but
- 9:40Speaker 1: I said, not a negative. I didn't know you did
- 9:42Speaker 1: stand up? You know what I'm saying. So so I went,
- 9:46Speaker 1: who are you talking about? You know? First last cli
- 9:50Speaker 1: plays out, so with success can kind of like, Hi,
- 9:59Speaker 1: what God you that? Yeah, it's crazy, And that's also
- 10:03Speaker 1: what people know you from what they don't right, right,
- 10:06Speaker 1: And so to see you doing stand up and I
- 10:09Speaker 1: won't give anybody any secret way. Please watch the opening,
- 10:13Speaker 1: please watch them. But I say, stupid, silly goofy the goofy?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Did you goofy? Goofy is silly? The same thing? So
- 10:23Speaker 1: she double five, double five, double five. But it's a
- 10:27Speaker 1: great special, Michelle. I want to just thank you. Welcome
- 10:30Speaker 1: to allowing me to see you as a stand up
- 10:33Speaker 1: being a guy. You know, I've done def jam bt,
- 10:36Speaker 1: I've done all the comedy special I walked away, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: I've had a successful careers and producer, writer and manager.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And to see a fresh face like yours come on
- 10:43Speaker 1: the comedy scene. I've been fortunate to interview my man
- 10:46Speaker 1: George Lopez when your special air on Netflix. And it's
- 10:51Speaker 1: a great run of a new, fresh female talent casing
- 10:55Speaker 1: itself in this pandemic year of one of them congratul elections.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Thank you, Rashana was so nice to meet you. I
- 11:02Speaker 1: hope to see you and give me a zoomer in
- 11:04Speaker 1: person with a mask who knows when you come down.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Make sure you people let me know. Okay, I got
- 11:09Speaker 1: a big old, beautiful office, love to bring you by.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Were talking live in my studio perfect. Don't give it
- 11:14Speaker 1: so much. I love you. Be strong, Thank you brother. Bye,
