- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Back to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. Good morning. And a very happy
- 0:20Monday to you. It is December 29th, 2025, and
- 0:24we are definitely charging toward the new year.
- 0:27We absolutely are. But it seems the tech world
- 0:29is not taking any kind of holiday break. No,
- 0:31not at all. Our sources today are just packed
- 0:35with these huge shifts. We're talking capital,
- 0:38currency, and of course, consumer risk. The big
- 0:41day. But before we get to all that, let's quickly
- 0:44set the stage a little bit about the world outside
- 0:46our doors and on Wall Street. Yeah, so on the
- 0:48weather front, if you're in the eastern half
- 0:50of the country, you're going to want to bundle
- 0:52up. There's an intense winter storm moving through
- 0:55the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes. Lizard
- 0:57conditions, right? Lizard conditions and a big
- 1:00Arctic front that's dropping temperatures pretty
- 1:02much everywhere in the eastern U .S. So expect
- 1:05sharply colder air and some of that lake effect
- 1:08snow around Erie and Ontario straight through
- 1:10New Year's. And here at home in Sacramento, our
- 1:13phones are just buzzing with multiple hazards
- 1:16and effect alerts. So yeah, a good day to be
- 1:19inside. A very good day to be inside connecting
- 1:22these dots. So looking at the markets from Monday,
- 1:25we saw a bit of a pullback, maybe some end of
- 1:27year profit taking. I think that's a good read.
- 1:30The Dow dipped about four tenths of a percent.
- 1:33And the S &P 500 was down about half a percent.
- 1:36But the weekly view is still positive. Exactly.
- 1:40If you zoom out just a little, both are holding
- 1:42onto weekly gains. So it feels like stability
- 1:45is still the main story despite the daily cooling.
- 1:49Bitcoin had a slightly rougher day. It was down
- 1:51just under 0 .7 % and that does dip it into the
- 1:55negative for the week. Yeah, nothing catastrophic,
- 1:58but definitely feels like part of that, you know,
- 2:00pre -New Year cooling off a little bit of holiday
- 2:03noise. Probably not a major structural worry
- 2:06heading into 2026. Before we jump into our top
- 2:09three tech stories, let's thank our first sponsor.
- 2:12This analysis is brought to you by Old Glory.
- 2:14And if you're still looking for any of those
- 2:16last -minute holiday gifts, especially for that
- 2:19techie friend who says they already have everything.

- 2:40at oldglory .com. All right, let's unpack our
- 2:43stories for today. We have three that really
- 2:45deal with the massive scale of digitalization.
- 2:48We do. We're going from the physical foundation
- 2:51of AI to how a state digitizes its own currency,
- 2:54and then finally to the risks that come with
- 2:57that shift. So we're starting with capital, a
- 2:59huge. $4 billion bet on artificial intelligence.
- 3:02That's right. We're talking about SoftBank Group
- 3:05Core, the Japanese tech and investment giant.
- 3:08They've just announced they're acquiring the
- 3:10NYSE listed private equity firm, Digital Bridge
- 3:13Group Inc. For $4 billion in cash. Yeah. And
- 3:17that includes Assuming their debt it does and
- 3:20this isn't just you know typical M &A chatter.
- 3:22This is a big strategy play So why is that? I
- 3:24mean digital bridge is all about digital infrastructure
- 3:26right data centers fiber cell towers So why is
- 3:29soft think? Spending this much money on the physical
- 3:32plumbing of the internet right now Because that
- 3:34physical plumbing is the only thing that can
- 3:36actually fuel the AI boom I mean you can have
- 3:39the most brilliant AI software in the world,
- 3:41but it's worthless if you can't run it It's worthless
- 3:44without the massive data centers, the cooling,
- 3:47the sheer power capacity to run those models.
- 3:51SoftBank is strategically buying the picks and
- 3:53shovels, not the gold. And what's really fascinating
- 3:56here is the valuation debate. Our sources are
- 3:58highlighting this. Digital Bridge manages 108
- 4:02billion in assets. But its stock has been wobbly.
- 4:06Very wobbly. The market cap recently dipped below
- 4:09$3 billion. There was all this talk about a potential
- 4:12AI bubble popping. So SoftBank just swooped in
- 4:15and paid a billion dollar premium. That's where
- 4:17the analysis gets so interesting. They paid $4
- 4:19billion, which is a huge premium over the market
- 4:22price. And what that reflects is this intense
- 4:25institutional conviction that these data center
- 4:28assets are just undervalued by the public market.
- 4:31So they think Wall Street is wrong. They do.
- 4:34In fact, JPMorgan analysts had previously set
- 4:36a $28 per share target, which would be about
- 4:40a $5 billion valuation. They called it an attractive
- 4:44takeout price. So even at $4 billion, SoftBank
- 4:46feels like they're getting a deal. They're being
- 4:48opportunistic, not over king. Right. And you
- 4:51have to remember who we're talking about. SoftBank's
- 4:53CEO, Masayoshi Son, I mean, $4 billion is almost
- 4:57a small investment in his grand scheme. Isn't
- 5:00he the one behind that $500 billion Stargate
- 5:03data center project with Sam Altman and Larry
- 5:05Ellison from earlier this year? The very same.
- 5:08And that context is absolutely key here. This
- 5:10$4 billion Digital Bridge deal isn't the whole
- 5:13vision, it's an acceleration engine. An engine,
- 5:15how so? Digital Bridge already has $14 billion
- 5:18of capital that's committed and... in -flight
- 5:21across the AI ecosystem for 2025. So Softbank
- 5:24is basically just buying a massive ready -to
- 5:27-go pipeline of data center infrastructure. A
- 5:29proven one, yes. It's a huge shortcut. It means
- 5:32that for anyone watching this space, the idea
- 5:35that AI demand might be peaking is probably wrong.
- 5:39Very wrong. Softbank, with its history of making
- 5:42these colossal bets, is showing that institutional
- 5:44capital is still pouring billions into the foundations
- 5:47of AI. Because those foundations are just non
- 5:50-negotiable for the next decade of tech. It's
- 5:53a compelling argument that the physical buildout
- 5:55is really only just beginning. I think so. So
- 5:59from institutional capital betting on infrastructure,
- 6:02let's pivot to how states are trying to control
- 6:05the financial flow on that new infrastructure.
- 6:07We're going to China. and their central bank
- 6:10digital currency. Right. This is a major policy
- 6:13shift coming from the People's Bank of China,
- 6:15the PBOC, and it's all about their digital Iran,
- 6:18the ECNY. And for anyone who's not familiar,
- 6:20CBDC is basically a digitized form of a country's
- 6:23official currency issued and backed by the central
- 6:26bank itself. Exactly. And the big news here,
- 6:29which is set to take effect January 1st, 2026,
- 6:32is that commercial banks offering these ECNY
- 6:35wallets will now be mandated to pay interest
- 6:37to users. It's a complete game changer. It fundamentally
- 6:41alters what the ECNY is. The PPOC is officially
- 6:45moving it from what they call digital cash to
- 6:48what they are now calling a digital deposit currency.
- 6:51And this whole transition is really about boosting
- 6:54adoption. Which has been a bit of a struggle,
- 6:56right? Even with the pilot programs running since
- 6:582019, it's had a hard time competing with giants
- 7:01like Alipay and WeChat Pay. A very hard time.
- 7:04But if you suddenly start offering interest,
- 7:06you look a lot more attractive than a zero interest
- 7:09wallet from a tech company. But the changes go
- 7:12deeper than just interest rates, don't they?
- 7:13Oh, absolutely. This whole digital RMB 2 .0,
- 7:17as they're calling it, means it's being formally
- 7:19integrated into the banking system. There are
- 7:22two huge regulatory steps here. OK, what are
- 7:24they? First, ECNY balances will now be protected
- 7:28under China's deposit insurance system, just
- 7:31like a regular bank account. Wow. That's a huge
- 7:33stamp of legitimacy, a big security blanket for
- 7:36the average person. It is. And second, the PBOC
- 7:39is using reserve requirements to cement its place.
- 7:42Balances will now be factored into commercial
- 7:44bank reserve calculations, and any non -bank
- 7:47payment providers will face 100 % reserve requirements.
- 7:51So the state is really flexing its regulatory
- 7:53muscle to make sure this currency succeeds. They
- 7:55are. And when you connect this to the bigger
- 7:57picture, the ECNY is already a global player.
- 8:01By November of 2025, it had processed over 3
- 8:06.48 billion transactions. Value to what? $2 .38
- 8:10trillion. And it's also the main currency used
- 8:13on Enbridge, which is that platform for instant
- 8:15cross -border payments between central banks.
- 8:17So China is using deposit insurance and interest
- 8:19payments to compete at home, but also to make
- 8:22their state -backed digital currency the most
- 8:25robust and attractive option for growing their
- 8:28financial influence abroad. That's the takeaway.
- 8:30It's a powerful move to formalize their digital
- 8:33financial control. It shows that when adoption
- 8:36lags, the state can just move the regulatory
- 8:38goalposts. Which brings us to our third and final
- 8:41story, the darker side of all this digital acceleration.
- 8:44Right, the vulnerability of our data. And this
- 8:47is illustrated by the largest data breach in
- 8:49South Korean history affecting the retailer,
- 8:51QPeng. Coupang, which is often called the Amazon
- 8:54of South Korea. This breach affected 33 .7 million
- 8:59customer accounts. An absolutely staggering number,
- 9:02a massive slice of the entire population. The
- 9:05scale alone is deeply concerning. So let's get
- 9:08into the damage report. What exactly was compromised
- 9:11and what was kept secure? Well, the good news,
- 9:14if there is any, is that the most critical financial
- 9:16data was safe. So credit card numbers, payment
- 9:20info. That's right. Credit cards, payment information,
- 9:23and maybe most importantly, login credentials
- 9:25and passwords were not exposed, so that does
- 9:28mitigate a lot of the immediate financial risk.
- 9:30Okay. But the bad news? The bad news is what
- 9:32they did get. And it's basically the entire toolkit
- 9:35for identity theft and fraud, full names, phone
- 9:38numbers, email addresses, physical mailing addresses,
- 9:41and detailed order information. Oof. The PII.
- 9:44Personally Identifying Information. All of it.
- 9:46And here's the part that really raises the alarm
- 9:48bells. The timeline. Right. The company only
- 9:51found out about the breach on November 18th.
- 9:53Correct. But the breach itself had allegedly
- 9:55been ongoing since June 24th. So that's almost
- 9:58a five -month window. A nearly five -month exposure
- 10:01window where data was just flowing out completely
- 10:03unnoticed. In cybersecurity terms, that is an
- 10:07eternity. And the alleged perpetrator. Reports
- 10:09are pointing to a former Chinese employee. a
- 10:12former employee using unrevoked access tokens,
- 10:15which the police are now investigating. And this
- 10:17whole thing comes after other massive breaches
- 10:20in South Korea this year, like the one that hit
- 10:22SK Telecom's 27 million subscribers. It really
- 10:25suggests a major national issue with internal
- 10:28monitoring and access control. I'd say so. The
- 10:30big takeaway for all of us, for anyone who shops
- 10:33online, is the danger of this PII even by itself.
- 10:37Even without credit cards, this data is gold
- 10:40for phishing scams. Highly targeted phishing,
- 10:42yeah. I mean, imagine you get a text message
- 10:44that says, your recent order of a blue coffee
- 10:47maker from Coupang scheduled for delivery to
- 10:49123 Main Street has been delayed. Click here
- 10:52to confirm. It's hyper specific. That combination
- 10:54of your real name, your real address, your actual
- 10:58order history, it makes the scam look completely
- 11:01legitimate. You're exponentially more likely
- 11:03to click. The CEO has apologized, but the immediate
- 11:07takeaway for consumers has to be vigilance. You
- 11:09have to assume your personal info is now public.
- 11:11Exactly. Scrutinize every single text, email,
- 11:15or call pretending to be from Coupang or any
- 11:17other delivery service, especially now during
- 11:20the holiday return season. It's prime time for
- 11:22this kind of fraud. That is some very sound advice.
- 11:25Before we move on to our final thoughts, we just
- 11:27want to give a quick shout out to our second
- 11:29sponsor. This analysis is also brought to you
- 11:32by Skone, the premium golf shoe store. If you're
- 11:35looking to upgrade your footwear on the course
- 11:38for the new year, Skone absolutely has you covered.
- 11:41They make incredible products. And you can get
- 11:4415 % off your entire purchase if you use the
- 11:46promo code SNARFL at checkout. You can find them
- 11:49at skone .com. So let's quickly recap the three
- 11:53major forces we saw driving the world of tech
- 11:55today. First up, Softbank's $4 billion acquisition
- 11:59of Digital Bridge. It's proof that institutional
- 12:01capital is still betting heavily on the physical
- 12:04foundations of AI, believing that infrastructure
- 12:07boom has a long, long way to run. Second, China
- 12:10is using its regulatory power—we're talking mandatory
- 12:13interest and deposit insurance—to formalize its
- 12:16digital yuan as a superior digital deposit currency.
- 12:20That solidifies its status at home and abroad.
- 12:24And third, that massive coupang breach. It's
- 12:27a critical reminder of the risk of all this accumulated
- 12:30PII and that even without passwords, your data
- 12:33provides powerful tools for highly convincing
- 12:36targeted fraud. All three of these stories really
- 12:38show that this digital acceleration is becoming
- 12:41highly formalized. It is in corporate strategy,
- 12:44in state policy, and unfortunately in consumer
- 12:46risk exposure. The systems are maturing. They're
- 12:49becoming fully integrated into our financial
- 12:51and commerce infrastructure. And when you look
- 12:53at SoftBank pouring billions into the physical
- 12:55hardware and China formally integrating the ECNY
- 12:58into its central banking reserve system. That
- 13:00whole push is toward the complete tokenization
- 13:03of value. Which brings us to our final provocative
- 13:05thought for you to mull over. With state central
- 13:08banks showing the path toward fully tokenized
- 13:11currency systems, how long until we see a major
- 13:15global financial institution, one that's outside
- 13:18of state, control, fully tokenize its core deposit
- 13:22system? That might just be the ultimate question
- 13:24for the financial landscape of 2026. A great
- 13:27place to leave you thinking. Absolutely. Thank
