Transcript
- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:03Peaks. This is my Jordan flu game
- 0:05podcast. This is my flu game podcast.
- 0:09I got sick earlier this week. Been battling through it,
- 0:13starting to feel better. But yeah, getting sick is never
- 0:16fun. I just crushed an herbal tea
- 0:20Advil, Dayquil. So I feel like I'm coming
- 0:23around. I'm, I'm in good spirits right
- 0:25now. And Speaking of so the first
- 0:29podcast topic today is training through sickness, training
- 0:34around sickness. What do you do when you get
- 0:36sick? I feel like I've had lots of,
- 0:39you know, I've been sick lots of times during training, during
- 0:42different parts of a training block.
- 0:44I've trained through it. I've not trained through it.
- 0:46And I'll just give you my thoughts on the best way to get
- 0:49through it. Next up, we're going to talk
- 0:52about risk in the mountains. So Washington has had three feet
- 0:57of snow, I think this month. It's starting to get winter up
- 1:01in the mountains. Last weekend, I did a hike and
- 1:05it was cold up top. I mean below freezing, wind
- 1:09chills, icy, snowy, and I'll probably talk about this a
- 1:14handful of times through the winter, but I wanted to discuss
- 1:16just overall risk in the mountains during the winter with
- 1:20more severe weather. We'll follow that up with a
- 1:23missing tent story on Mount Madison, which kind of got a lot
- 1:27of buzz in the last couple weeks.
- 1:31Next up we're going to talk about rehabbing knee injuries.
- 1:35This is a a question I got recently.
- 1:38Shout out Jack and yeah, so I'll go through rehabbing knee
- 1:43injuries. What I've done in the past,
- 1:45whether that be like a knee sprain, runner's knee, just
- 1:50tendonitis in your knees, like after an Ulter.
- 1:52I've had that before, just doing too much mileage.
- 1:55So I have a few little tips and tricks.
- 1:57I'll talk about that. Next up, maximizing speed
- 2:01workouts. So there's a few items I want to
- 2:03touch on quick. One being nose strips, 2 being
- 2:07ice, 3 being caffeine. I think those are like the
- 2:09staples, so I'll discuss each of those.
- 2:13Next. We're going to do a little quick
- 2:15breakdown preview of the mount, a Scutney Backyard Ultra that's
- 2:21coming up soon. We've talked about some backyard
- 2:24ultras before, and this one's a little bit unique.
- 2:27So instead of doing 4 mph every hour, you basically do a lap
- 2:33with a certain amount of vertical gain every hour.
- 2:35And there's actually two different loops that you can do
- 2:39for this back here at Ultra. So we'll do a quick preview.
- 2:43And there are some crushers on the on the entrance list right
- 2:46now. So it should be an exciting
- 2:49event and we'll just go through that quick.
- 2:52Next, we'll do a motivational minute.
- 2:54So I threw in, I got a quote throwing a little motivation
- 2:57towards the end. I did a few of these earlier and
- 3:00we're bringing back the motivational minute.
- 3:02I'll try to keep doing these each episode.
- 3:04And then lastly, I'm gonna discuss my 2025 victory over the
- 3:09fruit flies. I live in an older apartment
- 3:13complex, an older like building, like an old brick building, and
- 3:17there are some cracks in it and bugs get in and I've battled a
- 3:21few different species. But I wanted to talk about the
- 3:23fruit flies from this year. Yeah, we'll, we'll save it.
- 3:27We'll save the rest of it for that segment.
- 3:30So that's what we have today. And this is podcast #10 that is
- 3:35kind of, that is kind of crazy. I mean, these are flying by.
- 3:39I've been having fun doing them. I think some people are at least
- 3:42enjoying them. And if you guys keep listening,
- 3:45I will keep doing these podcasts.
- 3:47So we're at podcast #10 which is exciting.
- 3:50And with that, I want to share some exciting news.
- 3:55We're going to welcome in our first sponsor to the podcast.
- 3:58Guys. I am not going to promote any,
- 4:01any product, anything that I'm that I don't believe in, that I
- 4:04don't use and I'm excited to announce the first.
- 4:07So this episode is going to be sponsored the first sponsor of
- 4:10the Run Mountain Peaks podcast by hillstrides guys.
- 4:15If you are not doing your hillstrides 6 to 8 hillstrides 2
- 4:20to three times a week, if you're not doing that, you're leaving
- 4:23gains on the table. You're basically saying I don't
- 4:25want to get faster. I've talked about hillstrides
- 4:28before. Everyone should be doing their
- 4:30hillstrides at least a couple times a week.
- 4:33Oh, you thought I had a real sponsor?
- 4:35I will never sell out. I will sell out.
- 4:37I'll never sell out. I will sell out.
- 4:41For those of you who don't know hillstrides, it's just like a
- 4:45running workout. It's not like a brand or a
- 4:47product or anything. We have no sponsors in this
- 4:49podcast. We're raw dogging it.
- 4:51And yeah, so there we go, Episode 10, sponsored by
- 4:55Hillstrides. Now back to the episode.
- 4:58OK, all right, topic number one, training through sickness.
- 5:04So this is going to be like a training through sickness and
- 5:07just like overall running, like thoughts on like how to improve
- 5:12as a runner. So everyone has different goals
- 5:15with running. Some people have races that they
- 5:18want to finish. Some people have like lots of
- 5:20races they just they want to finish.
- 5:21Some people have times that they want to do.
- 5:24And so everyone's going to have their different priorities in
- 5:26running. But for me, if you are
- 5:29prioritizing like getting faster, like for me personally,
- 5:34that's what I'm doing. I'm trying to get faster and
- 5:35stronger. I have lots of things I want to
- 5:37do, but overall like I want to develop as a runner.
- 5:41If that is your goal, the way you do that like basically like
- 5:47run training is stressing the body running and then
- 5:52recovering. Like your body is recovering.
- 5:55And that's like a lot of what run training is.
- 5:58It's not like these other sports like basketball, football,
- 6:01baseball, where you're like learning skills, like those
- 6:04people have to be fast, strong, powerful, but there's a lot of
- 6:08skill and strategy involved. Running, a lot of it is just
- 6:13like your Physiology, your fitness, like how fit are you,
- 6:17along with race day strategies, nutrition, training, structure,
- 6:20stuff like this. But a lot of it is just fitness
- 6:24and like how do you get fitness? How do you get stronger?
- 6:26You train, you overwork your body, your body breaks down and
- 6:30then you have to recover and rest from it.
- 6:34And so yeah, it's this, it's this stressing your body and
- 6:37then recovering from it. That's, that's like what you
- 6:39want to do. And if you're over stressing
- 6:43your body, it results in injury, sickness, and you're just going
- 6:48to have to take down time at training and that is not going
- 6:50to give you long term success. So there are some people when
- 6:55they're training like the Goggins mentality, like he's
- 6:59obviously super famous and there's a ton of people that are
- 7:01like just going to train through anything, train seven days a
- 7:05week. And I think that kind of
- 7:07training that is not optimizing, getting faster and getting
- 7:12stronger like as a runner. Now, I will say that is
- 7:16definitely the and, and Goggins even says this like he's not
- 7:19training to be the bet. He's training his mind.
- 7:21He is like training his mental capacity.
- 7:25And that is like so, so crushing miles and crushing training is a
- 7:28separate thing from from optimizing your fitness.
- 7:32That is like a mental training, which I think is really
- 7:35important. There are times where I
- 7:36definitely need to train my mind.
- 7:39I've learned doing these ultras and doing these hard races that
- 7:41you actually mental toughness and, and grit is you have to
- 7:46train it. It's not just like a flip that
- 7:48can switch on. And so there is like that aspect
- 7:51of the training. But when you're, you're training
- 7:55to get faster, you can't just like rest days are important,
- 7:58recovery is important. And so you have to really
- 8:03optimize that training. And so when you get sick, right,
- 8:08there are some people will say no rest days, I don't care if
- 8:11I'm sick. I'm still going to get out and
- 8:13get after it. And what I've learned over the
- 8:16years, if you get sick and you just train through it, like you
- 8:18don't do make any modifications to your training, it's going to
- 8:23just set you back like a week or two.
- 8:27And so for me, if you get sick when you're training, you got to
- 8:32take a little bit of downtime and let your body recover
- 8:35because when you get sick, your body's already like totally
- 8:37stressed out. So if you add training on top of
- 8:39it, it's just going to be more stress and you're not going to
- 8:43be basically doing any training that is beneficial.
- 8:49So it's just not productive training.
- 8:52And so that's just like something you have to think
- 8:54about it. One, just like training in
- 8:56general, overtraining is definitely a thing and you have
- 8:59to think about it. And then when you get sick,
- 9:01doing too much is just going to set you back.
- 9:04And I guess on the overtraining and the sickness part, a lot of
- 9:08people, and there's a lot of people like what saying what I'm
- 9:11saying like you don't want to overtrain.
- 9:13I think yes, overtraining is a thing, but also like under
- 9:17recovering is a thing. You can probably train more than
- 9:21you think you can if you are getting 8910 hours of sleep
- 9:25every night, eating the right food out.
- 9:28Stress outside of training is low.
- 9:32I think there's a lot of under recovery and sometimes you're
- 9:34just being a baby and you're not training enough.
- 9:36Like, oh, I'm kind of tired when if you just had a little snack
- 9:39and you went out and trained, you wouldn't feel that tired.
- 9:41So it's a balancing act. There is overtraining, there is
- 9:44under training and you really want to shoot for that, that
- 9:47middle zone. And when it comes to sickness, I
- 9:50think the same thing applies. So when I get sick, like usually
- 9:54I, I don't know, sometimes you get stuffy, sometimes you have a
- 9:57scratchy throat or whatever. But like I treat sicknesses like
- 10:00you have, like you, you're getting a little bit of a
- 10:02feverish, like your body's fighting something off, your
- 10:05throat's very inflamed, super congested, that kind of thing.
- 10:10Just like a little cough, a little runny nose that that's
- 10:13something you can kind of train through.
- 10:14But when I get sick, when I get like feverish, really feeling
- 10:17not good, I immediately will take a rest day.
- 10:21And it's always hard when you get sick because one is never
- 10:26going to come at a good time. It's always if you're in the
- 10:28middle of a training block and you're like, oh, this is going
- 10:30to ruin whatever before races that's going to, it's going to
- 10:33ruin my race. Oh, it's going to recover this
- 10:35week. But now, like I didn't do, you
- 10:37know, it never happens at a good time.
- 10:39And so you just have to like, I think that's part of mentality.
- 10:43Like you have to accept the fact like, I am sick and the only way
- 10:46to get through this the fastest I can is to take care of myself.
- 10:50So I take as soon as I get sick, take a rest day.
- 10:53I feel like most sicknesses, like I don't get super sick a
- 10:56lot, knock on wood, but usually you have like a day or two
- 10:59that's the worst. And then you kind of slowly feel
- 11:02better. So if you're getting worse or
- 11:04you're really feeling feverish, I always will just take complete
- 11:08days off. If it's two days in a row, that
- 11:10kind of stinks. If it's three days in a row,
- 11:11that kind of stinks. But you have to do it.
- 11:14Rest, sleep a lot, eat good food.
- 11:16Like that's that's all you can do.
- 11:17Go to the doctor, see what they say.
- 11:21So I think that's like the first strategy, Shut it down.
- 11:23The way that I train is I always take a rest day every week.
- 11:26So if you get sick the first day, boom, it's just my rest day
- 11:30for the week. I haven't missed any training.
- 11:33Cool. The second day, OK, if you have
- 11:35to take two days off, all right, this is a unplanned rest day
- 11:38which you always try to avoid, but you got to do it.
- 11:42After that, you really are going to try to like find that balance
- 11:46of I need to start training a little bit, but I don't want to
- 11:49overdo it. It's kind of like when you have
- 11:51an injury, you want to start training, but if you're making
- 11:53it worse, not good. If it's getting a little bit
- 11:55better and you can start training a little bit, that's
- 11:57kind of how you want to do it. So the first day that I'm
- 12:00feeling a little bit better, I'm going to go do some half hour,
- 12:04maybe 45 minutes and maybe an hour if it's if I'm really
- 12:07feeling better of some super easy training and whatever I
- 12:14want to do is I want to do like the least stress on my body
- 12:17outside of that hour of training or whatever I'm trying to do.
- 12:20So if it's like super cold, if it's snowy, if it's icy outside,
- 12:23like that cold is just going to stress your body more.
- 12:26Don't do it. Hit a treadmill, go super slow,
- 12:29Just get the heart rate up a little bit and try to try to
- 12:33just get the body moving again. Like, and sometimes that helps
- 12:37with sickness. As long as you don't overdo it
- 12:39kind of working your, your body, getting your heart going, get
- 12:43your breathing going. Can it kind of help almost a
- 12:45little bit? I think one of the best ways to
- 12:47get over a sickness is sweat it out a little bit and try to give
- 12:50it to somebody else. I don't know, it's kind of a,
- 12:54that's a joke. I don't know, is that a bad
- 12:56thing to say? Like trying to give, not really,
- 12:58but kind of get out, do something, but do it super
- 13:01light. And then the next day if you're
- 13:03still like feeling a little bit better the next day you're like,
- 13:05alright, that is my new baseline.
- 13:07I can train a little bit, that's what I'm going to do.
- 13:10And then just kind of build up from there.
- 13:14Your training and eventually it's just like an injury.
- 13:18As you get better, as you feel better, ramp up your training
- 13:21back to normal and hopefully like you missed like a week of
- 13:25training. And if you take two or three
- 13:27deaths rest days, maybe the next week you don't do your rest rest
- 13:31day. So you train through.
- 13:33Like for me, I took off like 3 days in the middle of this week.
- 13:37So basically my, my Monday rest week rest day earlier this week
- 13:43is one of the days that I took off.
- 13:45And then like this upcoming Monday.
- 13:46So today's Sunday, so tomorrow I'm just going to train through
- 13:50it and not take my rest day. So really I only miss like one
- 13:53day of training. So you're not going to miss like
- 13:56a ton. And so that's kind of like how I
- 14:01I deal with it. I've trained through stuff and
- 14:04then you're just sick for like a week and a half, two weeks and,
- 14:07and and then you just feel bad when you're training, when
- 14:09you're training and your body is sick, like you're also
- 14:11recovering from an illness. You're not going to absorb
- 14:14training, you're not going to get better.
- 14:15So you're just kind of like a wasting your time if you take a
- 14:18whole week off and you're really overdoing it and like being a
- 14:20little bit of a baby, like I need to make sure I'm feeling
- 14:22perfect. Then when you get back, it's
- 14:25been so long that you actually are sucking wind on that first,
- 14:29you know, run, you feel horrible.
- 14:31Your legs are like jello. Like that's what you want to
- 14:33avoid. So it's finding that sweet spot.
- 14:36And then the other thing that I think is very important, so
- 14:39easing back into it is getting back your speed work and or
- 14:44strength worked as quick as you can.
- 14:46So if you are feeling ill, if you're not feeling 100%, keep
- 14:51everything easy. Run maybe into the moderate if
- 14:53you're, if you're trying to ramp back up, but don't do any hard
- 14:56workouts. But as soon as you feel like
- 14:5895%, try to hit some speed work because the longer you delay
- 15:04doing speed work, the, the, the harder it is going to be to keep
- 15:09like do it again and get back to where you were.
- 15:12So for me, like if you if you're if your sickness times perfectly
- 15:17where you just get sick after your speed work and you can
- 15:20recover by the next week, I would try to do speed work the
- 15:23next week and do some sort of easier speed work depending on
- 15:28where you are in your build. Like if you're doing like hard
- 15:31tempos or like VO2 Max style workouts, like maybe don't do
- 15:36that your first speed work, come back and just do like one minute
- 15:40on one minute off. That's like my sweet spot as
- 15:42like a, a workout that I use when I am coming back from
- 15:46something or like building back up.
- 15:47One minute on one minute off. You get the heart rate up, but
- 15:51it's not like very, very hard. Like you get a minute rest every
- 15:53every other minute. Do that for a week and then get
- 15:58back to your regular training and the next week you, you might
- 16:00be able to pick off where pick up where you left off and and
- 16:04there it's like, all right, I really didn't lose anything.
- 16:06Like I do the same speed work you did before you got sick.
- 16:09And if in two weeks you can just do the same workout, boom,
- 16:13you're right there. You didn't lose too much.
- 16:15Now, sometimes when you do that first hard workout after an
- 16:18injury, your heart rate is going to be a little bit higher, but
- 16:22that is actually not always a bad thing.
- 16:25Like I think everyone is always like, oh, I want to run the
- 16:28faster with a lower heart rate, which is like ultimately the
- 16:31goal. But having a super low heart
- 16:33rate sometimes means that your body isn't ready for training.
- 16:36Maybe you've been training too much.
- 16:38Maybe your body's too stressed and like your heart is actually
- 16:41not able to get very high, which is like not always a good sign.
- 16:45So if your heart rate's a little bit high, that just means your
- 16:47legs haven't been training as much as usual and your muscles
- 16:50can actually probably take more than they typically can.
- 16:53So don't freak out that your heart rate's really high.
- 16:56Buy that first hard workout back, do the workout.
- 16:59And then the week after that, usually I'm like back to normal
- 17:02and you're like, all right, you know, I'm back on track.
- 17:06So do one easy work, easy speed work to get back into it.
- 17:09Do a hard one. Don't be alarmed if your heart
- 17:12rate's a little bit high. And then after that you should
- 17:14be, you should be smooth sailing and just continue with your
- 17:17build. And obviously, if you don't have
- 17:20a race coming up very fast, that's like, easier to be like,
- 17:22yeah, I missed a couple or, you know, I kind of hovered around
- 17:26for a couple weeks, no big deal. But if you have a race,
- 17:29obviously that is a big deal. And so I have one more thought
- 17:33I'll share about sickness before.
- 17:34Like a big effort. If you have a big effort,
- 17:38especially ultra marathons, you can only do a few handful of big
- 17:42hard efforts in a year. If you're running like long
- 17:45ultras, unless you're like some sort of robot.
- 17:51And so your races are you put a lot of time into your races.
- 17:54You can train a couple 2-3, four months plus for for a big race
- 17:58and think about all the time, the hours you put into that.
- 18:02Getting sick the week of is just gut wrenching, heart wrenching,
- 18:06whatever you want to say it really, it really stinks.
- 18:09And, and so for me, like 1 of the strategies that I used to
- 18:15you basically want to prevent any sort of sickness that week
- 18:19before a race. So for me, if I have a race one
- 18:22week, the weekend before, I am not doing any like out in large
- 18:28setting, like party, not party, but like gathering atmospheres.
- 18:34I'm probably not going to go to like a big get together.
- 18:36I'm not going to go out to eat for no with a bunch of people
- 18:39for no reason. Like I'm going to be very
- 18:41conscious about like I, I am staying to myself.
- 18:46If anyone's sick, get away from me.
- 18:48I have put hours and hour and days into this build.
- 18:53Like going out for on a weekend just for like whatever until
- 18:57like a big bar and like being close with a lot of people
- 18:59during flu season, whatever in the fall.
- 19:01I'm just probably not going to do that.
- 19:05I think another one too is if you're like traveling to a race,
- 19:08like flying to a race, like wearing a mask, I don't know the
- 19:11science about wearing a mask versus not wearing a mask, but
- 19:16just be conscious about like, do not get in people's personal
- 19:19space. Don't share drinks and stuff,
- 19:21all all these things. Just be very cautious about
- 19:25like, OK, just don't get sick and don't stress about it.
- 19:29Like live your life, do your same routine, go to work, go to
- 19:32the gym, like whatever you used to doing.
- 19:34But you know, don't plan some some crazy extravagant like
- 19:38getting no sleep going out for a week and the week before race.
- 19:41I don't think that's any good. Some people take it as far as
- 19:44like they won't even eat out or get some sort of like take out
- 19:48the week before race because they don't want to get food
- 19:50poisoning, which is like a different sickness.
- 19:53But there's definitely things you can do to like minimize your
- 19:56risk of getting sick before race.
- 19:58And if you really care about the race and the effort, I would
- 20:01take all those precautions, no matter how silly they may seem.
- 20:05So that was the sickness talk. If you get sick, not the end of
- 20:09the world, but you got to be conscious.
- 20:12And if you don't want to get back track, just take care of
- 20:14yourself. OK #2 we're going to talk about
- 20:18risk in the mountains and the missing tent story.
- 20:22These kind of go together, but maybe they don't go together.
- 20:25But first I'll just talk about risk in the mountains.
- 20:27So I'll, this winter I'm going to go through like what I bring
- 20:31into the mountains during the winter, like, you know, stuff
- 20:34that you bring in your pack, safety precautions that you
- 20:37take. I think trail runners in
- 20:39particular, they, they get a lot of comments from hikers like,
- 20:42oh, be safe. Oh, that's all you got etcetera,
- 20:45etcetera. And so I'll go through that a
- 20:48different point, but I wanted to just talk about like your risk
- 20:52when you go into the mountains. So I think anytime you go out
- 20:58into the woods, especially the mountains in big terrain, you're
- 21:01taking some sort of risk of whatever that may be there.
- 21:05There's a risk associated with going out there, whether it be
- 21:08the conditions or getting, getting, just getting hurt and
- 21:11like not being able to get yourself out.
- 21:14And so there's all different things that you can bring.
- 21:17You bring the 10 essentials, you can bring in reaches, you can
- 21:20bring buddies like other people to come with you.
- 21:23And so there's all these different things we can bring.
- 21:25I won't get into that now, but I think the risk as far as like
- 21:29just being out there is something that you really should
- 21:31think about. So I went on a hike last weekend
- 21:34in the Belle Knaps, love the Belle knaps.
- 21:36We'll always shout out the Belle Knaps.
- 21:38It's like a smaller version of the White Mountains, just there
- 21:41are some sections that are just as steep, just as technical,
- 21:44punchy, and they're way quieter than the Whites.
- 21:49If you haven't been to the Belle Knaps, go to the Belle Knaps.
- 21:52But I was there on a Sunday afternoon and it was a cold,
- 21:56like it was like in the 20s wind chill last weekend.
- 21:59Just raw. It was kind of rainy sleety,
- 22:04just really raw out there. And I was thinking like in the
- 22:08bell naps, they're smaller mountains.
- 22:11They're like not even I don't even know if they're 2000 feet.
- 22:13Maybe some of them are, but not something that you would think
- 22:15about as being like pretty risky.
- 22:17But for me, when I was out there, I was thinking this is
- 22:21more risky than a lot of my time going out into the White
- 22:24Mountains. And here's why.
- 22:27If you go into the White Mountains on the weekends and
- 22:30you start before noon, no matter what time of year, with all the
- 22:34gridders and the 48 four thousand footer list people and
- 22:38just hikers getting out who just love getting out, there are
- 22:41always going to be people out there with you.
- 22:44So if you do get hurt, there's always going to be people out
- 22:47there like you never really are alone in the Whites if you're on
- 22:50a 4000 footer on the weekend. Now, if you're just doing some
- 22:55like no name trail in the middle of nowhere, like a lot of times
- 22:57you are alone. But when you're on trail with
- 23:00other people, I think your risk goes down like tenfold.
- 23:04There's going to be other people.
- 23:05You all have various sorts of gear and ways to get help or
- 23:10whatever. And so if you're nervous about
- 23:13getting out in the mountains, go on a 4000 footer, go in the
- 23:16morning on a weekend and you're going to be with people and
- 23:19there's really nothing to worry about.
- 23:21Now, if you're out there, if you're the last person there, if
- 23:25you there are not any other cars or there's one car and you pass
- 23:28that one person and you're the last person in the mountain,
- 23:31that changes your risk so much because no ones coming up behind
- 23:35you to to help you out if something happens.
- 23:38And so I think being aware of are there other people out there
- 23:42or and am I alone is a huge thing to think about when, when
- 23:48you're seeing risks. So when I was in the bell naps,
- 23:51there was one other car get up to the top and didn't see
- 23:53anybody. And it's getting darker probably
- 23:57like an hour and a half from dark.
- 23:59It's really, really cold. Like I, I had some gear, but
- 24:02it's not like I have like a gear to stay out there all night.
- 24:07That is when your risk is the highest and that's when you have
- 24:09to make the smartest decisions. Don't bomb down some crazy icy
- 24:14trail. Don't try something that you're,
- 24:16oh, I'm going to try to jump over this for no reason, like
- 24:19just because I'm trying to get fancy.
- 24:21This is when you have to make smart decisions because I think
- 24:25knowing your risk in the moment and then making smart decisions
- 24:29will save you from 90% of the issues you're going to face on
- 24:32trail. It's going to lower your risk
- 24:36injury. It's going to lower your injury
- 24:37of getting lost. Like I'm not going to do this
- 24:39trail. Like I don't really know where
- 24:40it is on a day that it's getting dark soon and it's really cold
- 24:44and there's no one else out here.
- 24:45Like knowing those factors are thinking something you should
- 24:49always be thinking about in your head.
- 24:52And so, yeah, that was just one thing I wanted to say.
- 24:54If you're getting out in the mountains this winter, just know
- 24:57it's getting really cold. If you get hurt in the mountains
- 25:00in the winter and you have to stay out there, a lot of the
- 25:03times you will get hypothermia if you have to stay out all
- 25:07night. So understanding when you're
- 25:11able to get help, if you are able to reach help, if you just
- 25:14have your phone, you don't have service, risk goes up.
- 25:17Understanding all these things and then like taking precautions
- 25:20is going to be very important. And so that's what I got to say
- 25:24about the mountains. Know who else is out there when
- 25:27you go out there and just be safe this winter.
- 25:29Look at the forecast ahead of time.
- 25:30We'll do a more a deeper dive into like the 10 essentials and
- 25:33what I bring and kind of thoughts about that.
- 25:35But yeah, just understand when you're out there, your
- 25:38surroundings, what's going on around you really does matter
- 25:41and can't help you. So that's the risk in the
- 25:44mountains talk. Next up, the missing tent story.
- 25:50I don't know the whole details of this, so I'm just going to do
- 25:52a high level overview. But essentially there was up on
- 25:57the the Valley Way trail near Madison Hut, there was like a
- 26:01camping platform or a place you can camp.
- 26:04And there was a tent that was abandoned, had a bunch of stuff
- 26:08in it, had car keys in it. Nobody was there.
- 26:12And presumably it was, it was left there and eventually the
- 26:19tent got reported like, hey, there's a tent with nobody in
- 26:21it. There's car keys, We don't know
- 26:22where they went. The tent got taken down and
- 26:26there have been no missing persons reports.
- 26:30And so it's kind of like this mystery, like what has happened?
- 26:33Like is this person missing? Are they not missing?
- 26:36Why are their car keys? There was no car that matched
- 26:41the car keys at the trailhead. And so it was kind of like a
- 26:45mystery. I think there's a bunch of
- 26:47theories, like one, they could be missing, but nobody has
- 26:51reported them missing. So like the police said that
- 26:53they can't really, if no one's reported missing, like, you
- 26:56know, they did a search for the person, they couldn't find
- 26:58anything. So like at this point, they're
- 26:59not going to search further if they, if nobody is actually
- 27:02missing, there's a thought like, oh, somebody, you know, didn't
- 27:08want to go back and they had a spare set of keys.
- 27:10So they just left and they left all their stuff up there or
- 27:15maybe that person was with somebody else.
- 27:17They left their stuff and then they left with somebody else,
- 27:20like if they parked at different trailheads.
- 27:22So there's some theories. I honestly don't know.
- 27:25They all seem hi there. They all seem that person to be
- 27:30a Boston Marathon sweater on. So she seems like a BQR.
- 27:34Good for her. Yeah, the all the theories seem
- 27:39a little bit strange. Like, why would somebody leave
- 27:45their keys and their stuff up there?
- 27:48Like, maybe some people just really don't care about their
- 27:51stuff that much. Or they didn't.
- 27:53They had a bad time camping. They're like, ah, screw it, I
- 27:55can't go back up there. Maybe they're really, like, out
- 27:58of shape or injured and they couldn't get back up there and
- 28:01they just bailed. And they did have a spare set of
- 28:03keys if they're missing, like somebody like saying that
- 28:07nobody's missing. So not looking for a missing
- 28:09person seems a little bit weird to me because I'm like, I think
- 28:11there's lots of people that don't tell, even though it's not
- 28:15best practice, don't tell somebody like that they're going
- 28:18out in the mountains or going hiking if you live alone or
- 28:22whatever. Like I live alone.
- 28:23Most of the stuff that I do, I just go and I don't tell people
- 28:28the full plan like and I just go out there.
- 28:30So I don't know like what my gut, what is my gut telling me?
- 28:36I think there's probably like an equal chance between all
- 28:39options. I think something weird is going
- 28:41on though, and I think like if you have a car key, can you
- 28:44match a car key to like a vehicle VIN or something?
- 28:48I don't know, I don't know. I wouldn't dismiss the whole
- 28:52thing though, like I would definitely and obviously like
- 28:54the Police Department of sure isn't dismissing everything.
- 28:57But if it were me, it seems like something there's still
- 29:00something weird that needs to be solved there.
- 29:02And that's my gut reaction. So that's kind of strange.
- 29:09If if by chance that person is listening to the podcast A
- 29:12needle in 10,000 haystacks. Hey, there's a bunch of people
- 29:16looking for your stuff and yeah, that would help us all.
- 29:20I've cracked that code, but OK, that's that's enough about the
- 29:24risk in the tent. Next topic, rehabbing knee
- 29:28injuries. So yeah, I've dealt with a
- 29:32handful of knee injuries over the years and honestly, this is
- 29:35going to be a super in depth talk.
- 29:37I think I just have a few tricks, but I do think they are
- 29:39extremely powerful. So I remember when I was first
- 29:42getting into running, I had a runner's knee.
- 29:45And I think that's something like that.
- 29:47You just, when you start running a lot, your tendons aren't used
- 29:51to the load and they'll just get aggravated.
- 29:54And I think runner's knee is something that you can actually
- 29:56run through at like a decent amount.
- 29:58It's like the tendon below your kneecap is like flaring up and
- 30:01that kind of hurts. And so when I had that runner's
- 30:05knee, I actually got like bought access to a program.
- 30:10It was, I think it was the ATG, it was knees over toes guy, knee
- 30:14rehab program. And this guy is like somebody
- 30:17who had chronic knee pain and now he can do these like insane
- 30:21squats and put like thousands of pounds of pressure on his knee.
- 30:24He can dunk. He's very, he's a good speaker.
- 30:28Like he's very much like, and he seems like he knows a ton about
- 30:31knee injuries, but his whole theory was like all these
- 30:34doctors just he wants you to get surgeries and like, you know,
- 30:38none of these are really long term fix fixes.
- 30:41And he dedicated his life to training how can I strengthen my
- 30:45knee like to the maximum extent. So he's got a lot of good stuff.
- 30:49And so I bought that program and I think a lot of things in that
- 30:51program are super helpful. I don't remember all of like the
- 30:55workouts, so I'm not going to list them all, but that's
- 30:58definitely like a good resource. And I'm sure if you go to knees
- 31:01over toes guy Instagram, there will be like most of the info
- 31:04that you need just on there like in video form.
- 31:07But what I gathered from that program, the two things that I
- 31:10gather that help me the most and 1 is like by far, I just would
- 31:14recommend this to everybody. Walking uphill backwards or
- 31:20dragging A weighted sled backwards is so good for your
- 31:24knees. This is what I did for all of my
- 31:27knee injuries and it's helped every single one of them pretty
- 31:30much go away. I, I don't really have knee
- 31:33issues, knock on wood. Like I haven't had a ton of knee
- 31:35issues. If they do flare up, it's
- 31:36something I, it's not something I can't work through.
- 31:39And so I do a combination of like those weighted sleds at the
- 31:42gym. Usually people like push them
- 31:44with the two poles. If you just have like a belt,
- 31:47usually they'll have them at the gym, tie it around your waist,
- 31:50hook it to the sled and then just walk backwards.
- 31:53For I like to do like longer sessions, so like 5 to 10
- 31:58minutes of just like walking backwards.
- 32:00I walk to one of the gym, I unstrap it, I turn around, I
- 32:02walk the other side and I just go back and forth for five to 10
- 32:05minutes. You can do it as a warm up, you
- 32:07can do it after you do done cardio, done weight lifting.
- 32:10And basically what it does is I think training your knees is
- 32:15very hard because you get a lot of stress to your knees.
- 32:18It's all like cartilage, ligaments that are like hard to
- 32:20get blood flow too without putting a lot of pressure on
- 32:23them. But if you're walking backwards
- 32:25with a weighted sled or the same thing as if you walk uphill
- 32:29backwards, you're putting pressure on your knee without
- 32:33loading that tendon. It's really loading your quads,
- 32:37but your knee is working, but in a, in a much lower impact.
- 32:41And what I can actually like, I can feel this when I do the
- 32:44workout. You can feel blood in, in a
- 32:47fluvial fluid or something, the fluid getting to your kneecap.
- 32:51And that's just going to promote healing.
- 32:53And so if you have any knee injury, whether it be a sprain
- 32:58like tendonitis, runners knee, I would do 5 to 10 minutes of this
- 33:043:00-ish times a week. And I would bet in a few weeks
- 33:08you will start feeling better. That would be my #1 tip to
- 33:12anybody. That was like the biggest thing
- 33:14that I got from that ATG knee program.
- 33:18It's just a way to strengthen your knee without putting a lot
- 33:21of pressure on it. Because like when you're
- 33:22squatting, when you're running downhill, when you're doing all
- 33:25these different exercises for your legs, it's just a lot of
- 33:28pressure on the knee. And if your knee is tweaked,
- 33:30it's not, it's going to get worse.
- 33:32But this is like the one way where your knee is protected and
- 33:35you strengthen everything around it at a low impact cost.
- 33:38So that is like the number one thing.
- 33:41You can also I think like if you have a treadmill, like I don't
- 33:44know if this is good for the treadmill, but if you keep a
- 33:46treadmill turned off and you just walk backwards, there's
- 33:49also that like resistance. It does like the same thing.
- 33:54And I've seen a lot of people at the gym like walking backwards
- 33:57on treadmills. So I'm sure knees over toes guys
- 33:59still doing his thing, but I really recommend that.
- 34:02The other big thing that I got from that program and this more
- 34:07helps with runners knee, but I think this helps with shin
- 34:09splints. I think this helps with like any
- 34:11lower leg injury from running is strengthening your sole.
- 34:16Strengthening your Soleus muscle is super important.
- 34:20It absorbs a ton of shock when you're training and the stronger
- 34:24that muscle can be, the least the lower impact that's going to
- 34:29get to the rest of your leg. So I would just look into like
- 34:32there's soleus calf raises. It's basically just keep your
- 34:36knee bent and do a calf raise. They're very effective.
- 34:40And the other thing too that I think, I don't know if this is
- 34:43like proven, but it's basically the same thing.
- 34:45You're strengthening your calf while your knees bent running
- 34:48uphill, get your soleus faster. So run mountain peaks, guys,
- 34:54let's go run mountain peaks. If you're running uphill, you're
- 34:58going to be strengthening your soleus.
- 34:59And I think that that helps with with knee issues as long as you
- 35:03don't overdo it. So shout out running uphill.
- 35:08Yeah. So I would, I would focus on
- 35:09those two things, walking backwards and and strengthening
- 35:13your soleus. And then like the other thing
- 35:16this could go for any a general injury is as you're progressing
- 35:21from an injury, do work. And as long as the injury isn't
- 35:26a three out of 10 or more of pain, like as long as it's like
- 35:293 or below and the next day it's not getting worse.
- 35:33Just progress your training like with that threshold, as soon as
- 35:36you hit that threshold, you got to back off.
- 35:38But just train up to that and give it some time.
- 35:42And that's like the same thing with the sicknesses.
- 35:44Eventually you got to take a little bit of time off to let it
- 35:48heal, but it's going to prevent you from like losing more
- 35:53training by just trying to train through it and making it worse.
- 35:57So that was the rehabbing knee injury stuff.
- 36:01Next topic, we have maximizing speed workouts.
- 36:05So this is something that honestly the I just wanted, this
- 36:09is going to be pretty quick. I just want to touch on one
- 36:11thing. So I use no strips.
- 36:14I used to use no strips every speed work.
- 36:16So once a week on like a hard speed workout day I'd always
- 36:19wear my nose strips and recently and so the no strips, I don't
- 36:25know if they're scientifically proven to like do anything like
- 36:29it probably has a 0.01% benefit. But when you wear a nose strip
- 36:34like you're, you can feel like your nose is a little bit more
- 36:36open like David Roche says, like if you can just get more oxygen,
- 36:40that's going to be good for you. It can't hurt.
- 36:43And they're super cheap, so why not use them?
- 36:46So that's one of the things that I always use for speed workouts.
- 36:49And I was using them recently. I don't know what brand I have,
- 36:52but every time I pull them off now, I've used them dozens of
- 36:58times before with no incidents. The last two times I've used
- 37:01them, I pull them off and I get this big bruise right here on my
- 37:05nose and it looks very strange, like it's very clear like for a
- 37:12few days, like I have this big bruise on my nose that's like
- 37:14very defined and I don't know, like people are looking at me
- 37:18like, oh, what's up with your nose?
- 37:20I don't know why this been happening.
- 37:22I don't know if my nose strip has been like too skinny.
- 37:25I need to find a new nose strip, but that's kind of been been
- 37:30aggravated me a little bit. So I need to test some new nose
- 37:33strips, but I don't know, I should, honestly, I should have
- 37:38tried different nose strips before I came on the podcast and
- 37:40wasted your time about this. But yeah, if anyone has had that
- 37:43problem and has figured out how to solve it, let me know.
- 37:47I think maybe just like a wider nose strip, but I don't know.
- 37:50It's like you get like this little like bruise, like almost
- 37:53like a little Hickey thing on your nose and I don't like it.
- 37:58So now I'm like, do I want to wear no shirts for a speed
- 38:01workout? I don't know.
- 38:02I you know, is it worth that .0% whatever gain for a bruise on my
- 38:06nose all week? I don't know.
- 38:08So, but OK, yeah, no shirts for speed workouts.
- 38:12So this is, I maybe should have done that after I did all the
- 38:15things. But yeah.
- 38:16So when I do a speed workout, the way that I think about speed
- 38:20workouts is I am trying to basically strengthen my leg
- 38:25muscles. So if you're trying for me long
- 38:29distance stuff, I'm just trying to get aerobically more fit my
- 38:31aerobic system. And when you do speed workout,
- 38:33you're producing Lactape, you're not using your aerobic system,
- 38:36you're using your anaerobic system.
- 38:38And so the real goal of the speed workout is to strengthen
- 38:42my muscles. So I do anything I can to
- 38:47basically ease the stress on my body so that I can just destroy
- 38:52my leg muscles so they can kind of rebuild the next day.
- 38:55It's like run your easy runs easy and your harder runs
- 38:57harder. I try to make the speed workouts
- 38:59extremely hard, like as much as I can take.
- 39:01And so a few tips that I use every training session.
- 39:04It's probably just a couple to maximize your output.
- 39:08One like no strips, like any, any little thing that's going to
- 39:13give you a little bit of gains. If it's not expensive, it's the
- 39:16cost money. I would just do it.
- 39:17So like no strips. I wear like my short shorts.
- 39:21I only have a couple pairs of those, but I'll wear those
- 39:23because like it reduces drag just like a little bit.
- 39:26I wear a tank top. So I'm like not over, you know,
- 39:29not sweating or anything. Do all of those things like if
- 39:34you have carbon plated shoes, wear those.
- 39:36Like wear your big shoes, wear your fast shoes, do all of these
- 39:40little things that are just gonna increase your output and
- 39:44just gonna, yeah, make you stronger.
- 39:47And two other things that I use. So caffeine, I've talked about
- 39:50caffeine before, but caffeine is like one of the only legal
- 39:54performance enhancers. If you use caffeine daily or if
- 39:58you never use caffeine when you're doing speed workout, you
- 40:01should use more than typical. So if you don't use any, take
- 40:04100 milligrams, maybe 150, maybe 200 if you're used to caffeine
- 40:09every day, like have coffee every day.
- 40:16People don't wave back to me on this road.
- 40:18They're getting very sad about that, OK.
- 40:23Yeah. And then if you do drink coffee,
- 40:24maybe you just have an extra 100 to 150 to 200 milligrams of
- 40:28caffeine. It pretty much is just going to
- 40:31reduce perceived like pain and it's going to give your body
- 40:37like a little bit of extra juice to go faster, go harder.
- 40:41And if you're not taking it, you're just going to miss out on
- 40:43that, on that extra boost, which you want for these speed
- 40:47workouts. So definitely take caffeine.
- 40:50It's legal. Like, I don't know, is anyone
- 40:51scared of taking caffeine long term?
- 40:53Like people have been taking caffeine for for decades, for
- 40:56centuries. Yeah, take caffeine.
- 41:01And then the other thing that I do is like any sort of cooling
- 41:04techniques that you can use. So like having cold water
- 41:07available to you. And then what I do, if I'm doing
- 41:10a workout inside, I'll bring an ice pack.
- 41:14And for me, what I found out works best, take a zip lock bag,
- 41:18like a sandwich zip lock bag, fill it with ice.
- 41:22And then just use that to, like, rub on your body.
- 41:26Yeah, I do really rub it on my body at Planet Fitness.
- 41:30People think I'm crazy, but I use it.
- 41:32So like in between, in my rest intervals, if I'm doing like on
- 41:35the incline tremor or the Stairmaster, I will take the ice
- 41:38pack, rub it on my head, rub it on my face, rub it on your
- 41:41hands, rub it on your arms, your legs, just to cool yourself
- 41:45down, to basically prepare yourself to go harder the next
- 41:48interval. Like you're just going to be
- 41:49able to get more out of yourself.
- 41:52And I think it's really beneficial.
- 41:54Look up cooling. There's some crazy studies about
- 41:59like how cooling increases performance because one of like
- 42:03the biggest limiters for, for physical performance is like
- 42:07your body's ability to cool itself down.
- 42:09That's why I like sauna heat training is so important.
- 42:12So if you can manually do that and it will increase your
- 42:16workouts, I think you should. So if you're doing an indoor
- 42:19workout, use ice. If you're going outdoors on like
- 42:22a track and you have access to ice or you know, whatever I
- 42:24would do that to it's just going to give those reps a little bit
- 42:28of extra juice. So, OK, so that was the the
- 42:33maximizing speed workout over this podcast.
- 42:36I'm definitely going to go into like there's a lot of topics
- 42:39that I want to talk about. I want to talk about different
- 42:41workouts that I do. I want to talk about different
- 42:44strategy. I'm trying to figure out like
- 42:46the best way. Sometimes I feel like I I'm a
- 42:49little bit rambler all over the place, but I want to really
- 42:52convey the information in a good way to you guys.
- 42:56And I'm just going to try to keep keep getting better at
- 42:59that. So, and if you have any
- 43:03questions, please like leave them in comments.
- 43:07I yeah, leave them in the comments wherever you listen to
- 43:10it. I'll try to get to them, address
- 43:12all of them. If there's any topics you want
- 43:15to hear, put them in there. And I'll, I'll definitely, I'll
- 43:18get to all of them. But OK.
- 43:21So the next topic is the mount a Scutney vertical backyard race.
- 43:28So that is happening next weekend, Mount Escutney in
- 43:33Vermont, Brownsville, Vt. It's a last person standing
- 43:37race. I feel like these races are
- 43:39getting pretty popular. Like I said, typically they're
- 43:42four mile an hour races, but here each participant is going
- 43:46to ascend and descend 1200 feet per hour until there's one
- 43:53person left. So 1200 feet of climbing and
- 43:56descending each hour lap. And there's going to be two
- 44:00different options. So I think there is.
- 44:03Do they have it here? Yeah, there's one option where
- 44:05you do 3 laps of 400 feet or you can do one big lap of 1200 feet.
- 44:12That's kind of like an interesting topic.
- 44:13So there's going to be strategy in this race for sure.
- 44:18I think one like in these backyard standing races, they
- 44:23can just get like kind of monotonous and boring and people
- 44:25kind of wear themselves out mentally.
- 44:27And I think just having different routes to do is very
- 44:29cool and very I think it offers just like a good a good mix of
- 44:34things to kind of keep your spirits, you know, up and you
- 44:39can kind of I'm done with this lap.
- 44:40I'm going to do this other kind of loop this time and kind of
- 44:43like help with the mental game. So I think that's cool, but how
- 44:47do I think about it? Is it easier to go up and down
- 44:51400 feet three times instead of up 1200 feet once?
- 44:55I think for sure, yes. Like I run at the Unkanunis a
- 45:00lot, which are like smaller mountains and it is so much
- 45:03easier to do 3000 feet when you go up and down four times as
- 45:07opposed to just going 3000 feet straight up.
- 45:10I think it's just you get you get a little bit of break
- 45:14muscularly and aerobically when you're going downhill.
- 45:18So it kind of mixes it up and I feel like it just deteriorates
- 45:22your let your deteriorate, deteriorates your leg muscles
- 45:27slower if you don't have as long a sense of descent.
- 45:32So I would assume that more people who are really going for
- 45:37long efforts are going to do the three laps to kind of ease on
- 45:42their bodies. But maybe mentally that's harder
- 45:44though. And I feel like if you're not
- 45:46going super fast, yeah, maybe that is just like mentally too
- 45:50much. So we'll see.
- 45:52It'll be interesting. Different people will take
- 45:54different, different people will take different routes here.
- 45:58So, and oh, they have a little bit of info here.
- 46:01So if you do 5 laps, that is 6288 feet approximately the size
- 46:06of Mount Washington. If you do 12 laps, 14,500 feet,
- 46:11which is about Mount Whitney. If you do 24 laps, it's 29,000
- 46:16feet. That's an Everest.
- 46:17So this this is like an Everest thing event, pretty much Everest
- 46:22thing is doing 29,000 feet of ascent and descent within 24
- 46:26hours. So we'll see how long they go.
- 46:29This is going to be super fun to watch.
- 46:32So OK, we want to get in the entrance though.
- 46:34This is what I was saying. There are some sluggers in this
- 46:38race. So people are going to, they're
- 46:39going to be Everest for sure. There's 75 people signed up.
- 46:46I'm sure like at least a handful, maybe a dozen, maybe a
- 46:48couple dozen Everest, maybe a couple.
- 46:51I don't know. We'll see.
- 46:52There's going to be a lot of Everest though.
- 46:55So I mean top, this is just like the ultra sign up.
- 46:58I'm just going to go through and like go through some of the
- 47:00names. I'm going to miss some crushers
- 47:02and we'll go through the results 2 weeks from now or next week or
- 47:06whenever they come out. But I'll just go on some of the
- 47:09just the names that I I see on here.
- 47:10So I mean, First off, the top person looks like they've done 1
- 47:15ultra race, Elijah Putnam, but he it was a 12 hour race, so it
- 47:21was kind of it was a long distance lace.
- 47:24So I'm sure he's going to be a crusher.
- 47:26He's only done one other race. So I feel like an ultra sign of
- 47:30if people only have like 0 or a couple results, you never really
- 47:32know. They could be like crushers that
- 47:34just haven't done races yet. So we'll see.
- 47:38The second person, Lila Gadrault, go look at her ultra
- 47:42sign up. She is like, yeah, 23 year old.
- 47:45She has done so many races. She puts down so many miles.
- 47:48She wins most of the races. Yeah.
- 47:52I think she just does insane mileage.
- 47:53So she's definitely a favorite. Peter Benito.
- 47:56I mean, he's done so many things.
- 47:58Absolute crusher. Amber Mozo, Don't know her, but
- 48:03second rated female. I'm sure she's going to be.
- 48:05She's going to be tough. Seth Richardson, Lyle Cortez,
- 48:10Connor Brown, a couple people on Community Skies.
- 48:13Brian SV. I'm pretty sure that's Brian SV
- 48:16on Strava. I think he almost took one of my
- 48:18crowns on a Moussa lock. And then Mia Buckingham.
- 48:24So she's done. Oh, she's doing help Hellbender
- 48:27next year. She's a crazy last person
- 48:30standing. So she's won Bubbles.
- 48:32She's coming second at Bubbles. She's won Bubbles multiple
- 48:35times, three times maybe. Yeah, just an absolute crusher.
- 48:38So she's going to be one of the top people.
- 48:40Bill Tidd, the supported New Hampshire 4000 Footer Tour de
- 48:45John's top 50 this year. Bill Tidd's going to be out
- 48:48there. He he is definitely in it to win
- 48:50it. Will Peterson long trail
- 48:54unsupported supported FKTS ever heard of it?
- 48:57I think those are yeah, top like top.
- 49:00There's like 20 like premier worldwide FKTS and he has some
- 49:04he's a long distance guy through hiker and I think he DNF D Tour
- 49:09de genres this year. I think actually to the sickness
- 49:11point, I think he got sick the week before the race.
- 49:14He DNF D and I'm sure he's got a lot to prove and he's going to
- 49:19go until he can't go yet. Ryan Joy shout out Amber
- 49:24Constant. She did the whites one.
- 49:26She did the AT section of of the Appalachian Trail, New Hampshire
- 49:31section of the Appalachian Trail this year.
- 49:33She got the overall FDT in that she did a White Mountains 100
- 49:37yo-yo. I don't even know who would want
- 49:39to do that. She puts down huge miles, so I'm
- 49:42sure she's going to have a good showing.
- 49:43Andrew Soras, that dude does tons of miles bunch of through
- 49:47hikes. Yeah, so, and this is going to
- 49:51be a stacked race, like some of like some absolute kill, like
- 49:56some of the best long distance people out there.
- 49:58So this event could go on for a couple days.
- 50:01I wonder. Yeah.
- 50:02What is my prediction on how long this event will go?
- 50:06I think Bubba's did Bubba's go 2 days this year.
- 50:09I think when you throw in vertical gain, it gets harder to
- 50:12go for longer. Like your muscles just get
- 50:14absolutely destroyed. 1200 feet though, is not really a lot.
- 50:19I'm going to say the winner is going to go 38 hours, 30.
- 50:25I want to say 36, but I'll say 38.
- 50:27So what's 38 * 12145 thousand feet of climbing?
- 50:31That's my prediction on how how long the farthest person is
- 50:36going to go with this race. But yeah, that'll be a cool
- 50:39event and and we'll definitely follow up when the results from
- 50:44that come in. All right, moving down the list
- 50:48here, we got two more things, both going to be fairly quick.
- 50:52So the motivational minute. All right, hold on guys.
- 50:55I got to get a drink of water here.
- 51:03OK, I'm back. I'm probably not going to cut
- 51:06that. I apologize.
- 51:09OK, the motivation minute for the week.
- 51:11This one hit me pretty hard recently.
- 51:14I I like what I don't have like cable, so I watch YouTube a good
- 51:18amount and my YouTube algorithm right now is just like half of
- 51:22my feet. Is just these like motivational,
- 51:25I don't know what you call them like kind of videos, but they're
- 51:27just like motivational, like compilation videos.
- 51:31And one of the ones that hit me hard a few days ago was this is
- 51:36the quote. Everyone has two lives.
- 51:38The second starts when you realize you only have one life.
- 51:42And I think it's like maybe a little bit cheesy, maybe a
- 51:45little bit corny, but something hit so deep in me recently when
- 51:49I heard that, like, I just turned 28 and I'm thinking like,
- 51:54I have two years of my 20s left. This I only get one chance at my
- 52:00at my 20s. And this could go for every if
- 52:02you're in your 30s forties, 50s, teens, you only have one life.
- 52:08This is it. You get no do overs.
- 52:10Like imagine all the things that you think back and you're like,
- 52:13I wish I could do that over like I don't have any regrets.
- 52:17But there are things that like, wow, you know, I had one crack
- 52:19and I kind of not whiffed, but I learned a lot.
- 52:22But I wish I did things different that you're, you only
- 52:26have one life. This is it all you're going to
- 52:28get. If you have a dream, if you have
- 52:30something you want to do, you have to attack it.
- 52:33Like today, like your time is fleeting.
- 52:38You need to go after it and get it.
- 52:41No goal is too big. If you have super big goals, I
- 52:44think they're probably not big enough.
- 52:46Dream bigger and just go after with all you have.
- 52:49Now, that doesn't mean quit your job, do all all these things,
- 52:53but make sure that you have a plan to get what you want.
- 52:56If you have something you really want, you got to make a plan and
- 53:00you got to be working towards it every day, every week.
- 53:02No more. I'm going to start after this.
- 53:05Oh, I can't do it because it's too risky.
- 53:07Like how imagine how risky it is if you go your whole life and
- 53:11you never take a chance on what something you really wanted.
- 53:14Like that is actually the ultimate risk that is so much
- 53:18riskier than what you're perceiving is like some sort of
- 53:22thing that you'd be uncomfortable doing.
- 53:23So if you have a shot, if you got something, you got to go
- 53:26take it. And if you don't know what that
- 53:28is like, I think a lot of the part of the battle is just
- 53:31understanding what you want in life or like what, yeah, what
- 53:35you really want to go after. You got to figure that out.
- 53:38And once you figure that out, you have to take huge risks and
- 53:42and go for it. And that quote really hit hard
- 53:45for me. If you have anything that you've
- 53:48been thinking about or you want to pull the trigger, but you
- 53:50don't think because of this, that or the other thing, I think
- 53:55that this, that or the other thing is actually the bigger
- 53:58risk as opposed to not doing them.
- 54:01Like if you just keep doing, keep going down the path you're
- 54:04going down, like, hey, maybe you got a good family, you got a
- 54:07good life. Like everything is good.
- 54:10That's awesome. Like a lot of people love that.
- 54:12But if there was something that you really wanted to go for and
- 54:15you didn't like not going for it is actually the biggest risk.
- 54:19So go, yeah, have a dream and go for it.
- 54:23And last, last thing in the podcast, my 2025 victory over
- 54:29the fruit flies. Like I said at the beginning of
- 54:33the at the pod, at the beginning of the podcast, I live in like
- 54:37an older, like a brick, just old apartment building.
- 54:42And I moved into a new unit this year, but I've been in the same
- 54:46complex for a while and I've just dealt with critters getting
- 54:50into my house. Now.
- 54:51Luckily it's not anything big, like I don't have mice or rats
- 54:54or anything, but lots of bugs get into my apartment.
- 54:59Some of them I make peace with, some of them I don't make peace
- 55:02with spiders. I make peace with spiders unless
- 55:05they're like super big and super scary near my head.
- 55:08At night I let them go because they kind of put the webs up and
- 55:12they get a bunch of other insects and stuff.
- 55:14But flies have been my nemesis. Now at the old apartment, big
- 55:20flies always got in. And I hate big flies.
- 55:22Getting big flies stinks. But I haven't had this in the
- 55:24new apartment, The new apartment.
- 55:26And I will say this happened in both apartments.
- 55:29The fruit flies have been absolutely insane.
- 55:33I eat a ton of fruit. I get it.
- 55:35I have a bunch of bananas every week.
- 55:37I have apples, blueberries, like I have all the fruits.
- 55:40Some of it's, you know, stored outside of the fridge like
- 55:43bananas. You have to but if okay, this is
- 55:48a this is a if you're a scientist or a biologist and
- 55:53you're listening to this podcast needle in a haystack needle in
- 55:561000 haystacks. But if you were listening and
- 55:59you want a new research project, the fruit flies in my apartment,
- 56:03whatever DNA they have, whatever strain of fruit fly this is, is
- 56:07the hardiest, most resilient, smartest fruit fly on planet
- 56:12Earth. You need to study them because
- 56:14you'll probably become rich. These, I cannot get them to go
- 56:18away during the summer. I've tried every single thing.
- 56:21I've tried the little plug in traps, the sticky traps that you
- 56:24plug with the light. I've tried like the actual like
- 56:28stick traps that don't have a light that are just like
- 56:31whatever coating. I've tried the traps that you
- 56:33can get like from a manufacturer that with the little holes that
- 56:36they get in. I've tried DIY like throwing
- 56:40apples in a bowl with vinegar or and poking holes with the little
- 56:44plastic to get them to go in. I've tried red wine in a bowl
- 56:48with the little holes in the plastic to get them to go in.
- 56:50I cannot capture these things and and get rid of them during
- 56:54the summer. It is, it is a horrible problem
- 56:57and and I don't know if like I, I feel like a lot of people say
- 57:02fruit flies are like annoying to have, but I don't know.
- 57:06I, I truly think that these fruit flies are our next level
- 57:11tough, smart. They just don't go in the traps
- 57:13and I just have crazy amounts of fruit flies flying around my
- 57:17bananas, my trash all summer. And honestly, I would prefer
- 57:24fruit flies over the big flies because the big flies, like it
- 57:28takes a little bit to kill them. Like the fruit flies, you can't
- 57:30really do anything about them. So I just kind of like they're
- 57:35just my roommates for the summer.
- 57:38But yeah, it's something that I struggled with.
- 57:41I can't figure out how to get rid of them.
- 57:43And the only, the only the way that gets rid of them is in like
- 57:47November when it starts to get cold for a long period of time.
- 57:50They finally die off. So the fruit flies have died off
- 57:54for the year. I have recaptured my my
- 57:57household for myself. But yeah, it is, it is brutal
- 58:02with these fruit flies. So I have about, I think maybe
- 58:05like usually this spring, they're not too bad.
- 58:07So I have about 6 months fruit fly free right now.
- 58:10So I'm very excited about that. I'm going to try to be thankful
- 58:14and not not become too comfortable without the fruit
- 58:18flies because I know they're coming back.
- 58:20But yeah, the fruit flies have just been insane.
- 58:23And I mean, yeah, if you have any strategies, please let me
- 58:26know. But I really think that this,
- 58:28this strain of fruit flies just built different.
- 58:30So, but oh, well, they're gone for the year.
- 58:34And so I have one. And so I, I've been doing a
- 58:36little victory lap, doing a little bit of ha ha with the
- 58:39fruit flies. And I will say actually the
- 58:42fruit flies are gone. But last week I had a little bit
- 58:44of a Hornet incident. We have these Hornets by the
- 58:50apartment that are just massive. And I looked at my slider door
- 58:55the other day and there's like 10 of them just dead in the
- 58:57slider thing. I've killed a few of them that
- 58:58got into the house. I don't know really where
- 59:02they're getting in. Like I assume that they're going
- 59:03to go away in the winter. But yeah, I, I killed one the
- 59:08other day. It was probably this big.
- 59:11I was so frightened. I stunned it with my hat, and it
- 59:13wasn't fully dead. And.
- 59:15And I had to hit it again with the hat.
- 59:17And then I had to go get a rock and finish the job.
- 59:19And so. Hi there.
- 59:21How's it going? OK, That's the end of the
- 59:31podcast anyway. Yeah.
- 59:34And so I took out this massive Hornet, which I was legitimately
- 59:37scared to do the other day. But yeah, bugs just get in my
- 59:40apartment and lucky for me, the the winter I will be bug free.
- 59:44So that was a whole story I wanted to share there.
- 59:48So that's all I have for today. Those were the topics.
- 59:52I think we're about about an hour here.
- 59:55Let's go. Yeah, that's all I got.
- 59:59So I'm feeling a little bit better.
- 1:00:00I'm going to hit a speed workout probably Tuesday and then
- 1:00:05hopefully my training is back on track.
- 1:00:07But. We'll see how it goes.
- 1:00:09I'll do an update next week and hopefully any of these tips that
- 1:00:12I talked about help you out if this is like the sixth season.
- 1:00:16So I feel like people are getting sick.
- 1:00:17So hopefully that's not you. But if it is, hopefully some of
- 1:00:21the stuff helped and you can get back to training and get back to
- 1:00:25Gaines, running up mountains, running mountain peaks.
- 1:00:30That's the goal. All right, till next time.
- 1:00:34Again, this podcast follows by Hillstrides.
- 1:00:37We'll see you next time, Peace.
