- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:17And I'm Morgan. We're coming to you from Snarful
- 0:20Solutions Group here in Sacramento, California.
- 0:23Today is Friday, August 1st, 2025. And it is
- 0:27a lovely day here in Sacramento, sunny. expecting
- 0:30a high around 92 degrees. Just beautiful weather.
- 0:34Yeah, really is. Perfect day to talk tech. Elsewhere
- 0:37in the country though, not quite so nice. Looks
- 0:40like heavy rain, even some thunderstorms hitting
- 0:42the northern mid -Atlantic and southern New England.
- 0:44Oh, right. Flash flood risks there. Exactly.
- 0:47And then out west, northwestern Great Basin,
- 0:50still dealing with... some isolated dry thunderstorms.
- 0:54So, you know, fire weather is still a concern.
- 0:56Just stay safe out there, everyone. Good advice.
- 1:00Switching over to the markets quickly. Things
- 1:02ended the week a bit down. Yeah, I saw that.
- 1:04The Dow closed down about point five five percent
- 1:07yesterday, lost almost 240 points. And for the
- 1:10week, it's down over three percent. Yeah. And
- 1:13the S &P 500 similar story down point six six
- 1:16percent for the day and down two point three
- 1:19eight percent for the week. Even Bitcoin took
- 1:21a little dip down about half a percent yesterday
- 1:24and close to two and a half percent down for
- 1:26the whole week. Just a reminder of things, you
- 1:28know, go up and down. They certainly do. And
- 1:31speaking of things, maybe not going quite as
- 1:33hoped. My San Francisco Giants didn't have a
- 1:36game yesterday, July 31st. Bummer. Yeah, just
- 1:39nothing. Hopefully they get some wins soon. But
- 1:42okay, let's dive into the tech news. We've got
- 1:44some really interesting stuff from our Morningstar
- 1:47report today, all centered on Apple. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:49First up, it's all about AI. Apple CEO Kim Cook
- 1:52came out saying the company is quote, significantly
- 1:55growing its AI investments. They're apparently
- 1:59reallocating staff. And he said they're very
- 2:02open to M &A mergers and acquisitions to speed
- 2:06things up that feels like a pretty big declaration
- 2:08for apple doesn't it they've always seemed a
- 2:09bit more measured maybe but cook called ai one
- 2:13of the most profound technologies of our lifetime
- 2:16yeah that's strong language you really stress
- 2:18they aren't just you know adding features they're
- 2:20embedding ai across devices platforms the whole
- 2:25company really so it's foundational exactly it
- 2:28sounds like a fundamental shift they're even
- 2:30moving a fair number of people on AI projects
- 2:33that shows real internal focus. And it's not
- 2:36just people inside Apple. The report mentioned
- 2:38they've snapped up seven small AI companies just
- 2:42this year. Seven already. Wow. It's like one
- 2:44every few weeks. Right. And Cook saying they're
- 2:47very open to more M &A. It definitely suggests
- 2:50they're serious about buying innovation, not
- 2:52just building it all themselves. And what's interesting
- 2:54is how they're framing their, let's say, pace.
- 2:58You know, they've gotten some criticism for maybe
- 3:00being slower than others in AI. Yeah, being caught
- 3:04off guard. Right. But Apple's defending it. saying
- 3:06they won't rush things that aren't, you know,
- 3:09perfect. They prioritize that polished user experience.
- 3:13It's not about being first, it's about being
- 3:15right. That is classic Apple. Like the careful
- 3:17chef versus the fast food joint. They want the
- 3:20final dish perfect. Exactly. And they have launched
- 3:22stuff. Over 20 Apple intelligence features are
- 3:25out there now. Right, the visual stuff, the cleanup
- 3:27tools for photos, the writing aids. Yeah. Apparently,
- 3:31later this year, we'll see live translation.
- 3:33Maybe an AI workout, buddy. OK, cool. But the
- 3:35big Siri overhaul, the really personalized one,
- 3:38that's pushed back. Yeah, it's like 2026 now.
- 3:41Cook said they're making good progress, but,
- 3:43yeah, delayed. And what about hardware? Cook
- 3:47doesn't think AI glasses will replace the iPhone.
- 3:50Nope. He sees them as complementary. Add -ons,
- 3:53maybe, but the iPhone stays central, which kind
- 3:56of makes sense, doesn't it? Yeah. It does. So,
- 3:58okay, let's connect the dots here. For you listening,
- 4:01if you use Apple stuff, this means expect your
- 4:03devices to get smarter, more helpful. Right.
- 4:05Think about AI making everyday tasks easier.
- 4:09organizing things, writing emails, maybe even
- 4:12that workout buddy actually helping you stick
- 4:14to your goals. And for businesses. Well, it's
- 4:16a huge signal. Apple putting this much weight
- 4:18behind AI changes the competitive landscape.
- 4:21It affects what tools businesses adopt, where
- 4:23talent goes. It basically confirms AI is the
- 4:26next big layer for everything. Gotcha. OK, huge
- 4:29AI push. Let's move to the second story, which
- 4:31is just mind blowing numbers. Get this. Apple
- 4:35has now sold over three billion iPhones since
- 4:372007. Three billion. It's, uh, yeah, staggering.
- 4:42And the speed up is the really fascinating part.
- 4:44Tell me about it. So it took them nine years,
- 4:46right, to sell the first billion. That was by
- 4:482016. Okay. Nine years. Then just five more years
- 4:51to hit the second billion by 2021. Much faster.
- 4:55And now only four years later, here we are in
- 4:582025 and they've hit three billion. The demand
- 5:01is actually accelerating. Wow. That's incredible.
- 5:04And the iPhone is still just printing money for
- 5:06them, right? Almost $44 billion in Q2 revenue.
- 5:09Yep, out of $94 billion total. And the report
- 5:11said the iPhone 16 models really boosted upgrade
- 5:14numbers. Strong double -digit growth there, still
- 5:16the core product. But it's worth remembering,
- 5:19Android still has more phones out there globally,
- 5:21volume -wise. Oh, for sure. By 2022, there were
- 5:24over 3 billion active Android phones. That's
- 5:27like, what? three quarters of the whole mobile
- 5:29market. So Apple's three billion sold is amazing
- 5:31for one product line, but Android's overall footprint
- 5:34is bigger. Right. Good context. Still, Cook's
- 5:37not backing down on the iPhone. He sees it as
- 5:39foundational. Absolutely. So for you, the listener,
- 5:43what does three billion iPhones mean? It just
- 5:46highlights how everywhere the iPhone is. Totally.
- 5:48Think about app developers, huge audience, the
- 5:51accessory market, just the sheer presence of
- 5:54iOS, and yeah, the whole social image thing too.
- 5:57Right, and for families, for professionals. Yeah.
- 5:59It means you're part of this massive, stable
- 6:01ecosystem. You get continued support, security,
- 6:04tons of apps. It's reliable. It really is. Three
- 6:07billion. It's just hard to picture. Think of
- 6:08all the connections, photos, messages flowing
- 6:11through those devices constantly. Truly reshape
- 6:14things. And that leads us perfectly into our
- 6:16last story today, which is about another huge
- 6:18part of Apple's business services. Ah, yes. The
- 6:22other growth engine. Exactly. Their services
- 6:24revenue. That's App Store, Apple Music, iCloud,
- 6:27Apple Pay, TV, plus all that stuff. Hit an all
- 6:30time record in Q3. Twenty seven point four two
- 6:34billion dollars. Wow. Another record. And that
- 6:37beat estimates, right? Yeah. Analysts expected.
- 6:39maybe $26 .8 billion, so a solid beat. And it's
- 6:43up above 13 % from last year. It just shows how
- 6:46crucial this side of the business is becoming.
- 6:47Definitely helps them not rely just on selling
- 6:49phones or laptops. makes them more stable for
- 6:52sure and overall q3 was strong for apple 94 billion
- 6:56dollars in total revenue 23 .4 billion dollars
- 6:59in profit both beat estimates to iphone and mac
- 7:01revenue grew well double digits yeah but interestingly
- 7:04ipad and the world's home accessories category
- 7:06actually saw slight declines so services really
- 7:10picking up the slack or just becoming a main
- 7:12pillar becoming main pillar i think and what
- 7:14helps drive that is their huge installed base
- 7:16of active devices that hit a new all -time high
- 7:18too across everything which points to Like that
- 7:2198 % satisfaction rate for iPhone in the U .S.,
- 7:24people stick around. They really do. That loyalty
- 7:27is gold for growing services. And within services,
- 7:31Apple TV plus viewership is apparently way up.
- 7:33App Store revenue grew double digits. It's firing
- 7:36on multiple cylinders. So they're becoming less
- 7:39of just a hardware company and more. Like a whole
- 7:42lifestyle platform. Kind of feels that way, doesn't
- 7:44it? Media, finance, cloud storage. It's all integrated.
- 7:49So, again, for you listening, what's the takeaway?
- 7:51This record services money means Apple's investing
- 7:54back into those things you use. Right. More shows
- 7:56on TV plus AltheaX, better iCloud features, a
- 8:00healthy app store. That revenue stream fuels
- 8:02the whole ecosystem. And if you're a developer
- 8:04or creator, it means Apple's platform is thriving.
- 8:08Huge engaged audience that pays for stuff. That's
- 8:11where Apple's clearly focusing a lot of future
- 8:12growth. Very attractive place to be. Okay, quite
- 8:15a picture of Apple today. Let's quickly recap.
- 8:17That's good. First, a major significant push
- 8:20into AI. Investments, acquisitions, expect smarter
- 8:23Apple devices coming your way. Then, that absolutely
- 8:26massive milestone, over 3 billion iPhones sold
- 8:30since launch, shows its incredible staying power
- 8:32and accelerating demand. And finally, services
- 8:35hitting an all -time revenue record. Apple's
- 8:38becoming much more than just hardware, investing
- 8:40heavily in the apps and content you use daily.
- 8:43Yeah, these pieces really connect to show a company
- 8:47solidifying its foundation while betting big
- 8:50on the next wave with AI. Absolutely. It paints
- 8:53a picture of where tech is heading and how it
- 8:56impacts all of us. Definitely gives you something
- 8:58to think about how this deeper integration of
- 9:00AI built on such a huge existing base might change
- 9:04our daily habits. You know, what new possibilities
- 9:07or maybe dependencies might emerge down the line.
- 9:10That's the big question. Lots to chew on. Indeed.
